They take a deep look at mentoring and induction and talk about what continues to inspire and drive Joellen's work. Joellen is a renowned leader in education with 30 years of experience in the design, implementation, and evaluation of professional learning. Joellen has served as a senior advisor to Learning Forward and is also the author of several books. On the podcast, Kathleen specifically discusses Joellen's article "Coaching Light Coaching Heavy" and how it informed and changed the way in which she views mentoring, induction, and her own professional learning. Joellen starts the podcast by talking about the magic that results from high-quality professional learning and the impact that this has on students. She also talks about her "why" and what pushes her to continue to support the field. Joellen and Kathleen discuss the feedback element in the professional growth process and the impact that this can have both on teachers and students. Joellen calls us to start by asking the person we are in community with what they would like to learn? This can be an entry point that leads to greater results and deeper understanding. Joellen also pushes us to think past not only using teacher retention as a measure of success, but to look at measuring the success of a mentoring program through the student's success. She explains to Kathleen what this could look like in practice and how making students the primary goal of mentoring might play out in school buildings. Kathleen also emphasizes the delicate balance of building mentor-mentee relationships as well as supporting students in the classroom through mentees. Continue your learning After listening to this episode, use the reflection guide to explore how you might further connect students to community and co-design learning opportunities unique to your location. Dr. Kahn asks both teachers and mentors to have a working knowledge of our classroom and students in a holistic and meaningful way. Mentoring cannot only help teachers prepare for the content and logistical elements of what needs to be delivered in the classroom but also for the emotional aspect as well. Mentoring is a way to support a growth mindset, set teachers on a path for success, and set students on a successful path of learning and growing as well, he shares. 3Ps Host Juliana Urtubey, NBCT, and Dr. Kahn also explore Universal Design of Learning and how this approach can support early career teachers as well. Dr. Kahn provides realistic examples of how UDL can be applied to our practice to support learners and mentees and create environments that help to remove the stigma some students experience and lower demands teachers may experience. Dr. Kahn reinforces the idea of modeling what we expect from our learners. He asks us to stay mindful of modeling how we navigate through moments of need or dysregulation and navigate executive functions; we are establishing the environment that we hope our learners and mentees will feel comfortable demonstrating back. Dr. Kahn asks us to evaluate our practice: if we are asking mentees or learners to do more than we are willing to do ourselves, then we need to reassess and determine what we are asking and why. Dr. Kahn leaves us with thoughts around flexibility that unlock learning opportunities that will serve our students in ways that help them feel safe, engaged and support lifelong learning. Continue your learning After listening to this episode, use this reflection guide to further explore how you can connect this episode to your work. In this second episode of our series "More Than Mentoring," Sarah explains how she collapses the space between mentor and teacher in order to be in a collaborative relationship with her mentees. Sarah Brown Wessling is a high school English teacher and the director of the National Teacher of the Year program, which gives her the opportunity to work with the state teachers of the year. She is a fierce advocate for the profession and a mentor who embodies curiosity and kindness. Sarah pushes us to explore our teaching identity and to examine how we mentor teachers to ensure we aren't telling teachers how to establish a teaching identity but supporting them in discovering their own teaching identity through reflection. She also explains why and how she crafts invitations for learning and how that impacts trust, autonomy, respect, and community. Sarah and Juliana talk deeply about developing relationships and how limiting our idea of mentoring to specifically timed meetings can limit those relationships. Mentors, whether working with students or adults, should consider establishing connection points that allow for rolling and continuous conversations. Sarah coaches us to be the most interested person in the room and ask questions that will support growth. She shares that questions are like "pulleys" and, when we are genuinely curious, questions pull us closer. Don't forget that Sarah reminds us that listening is leadership and a gift. Often those we are listening to have the answer in themselves and just need the encouraging nudge of hearing their words back to them to know they are seen and that they are moving in the right direction. In the meantime, here's a special episode of 3Ps in a Pod with Ken Shelton, an expert on artificial intelligence (AI) in education and author of The Promises and Perils of AI in Education: Ethics and Equity Have Entered the Chat. Marlys Weaver of the Arizona K12 Center and Dr. LeeAnn Lindsey of the Arizona Institute for Education and the Economy, co-host this episode. Dr. Lindsey also co-hosted the four-part AI in Education podcast series last spring and was part of the team that created the guide Generative Artificial Intelligence in K-12 Education: Guidance for Arizona Schools and School Systems. Ken has worked in education for more than 20 years and holds a Master of Arts in education with a specialization in educational technology as well as new media design and production. These include asking why you're using a tool or program in a particular way, "What is the learning, experiential or educational goal or purpose of using an AI tool?" and "What problem does this solve that you can't address with other available resources?" Ken and Dr. Lindsey also discuss how "performatively engaging" technology can be for students. Ken recommends that educators do not confuse activity with engagement. AI tools can appear "fun," as Dr. Lindsey notes, but to be used responsibly and effectively, Ken states that educators must frame AI use around educational goals and the experiences educators want students to have to reach those goals. Ken closes the episode talking about the things that AI can do better than humans and what humans will always be able to do better than AI. He then shares the positives that can come from AI use in schools. At an upcoming series on AI in Education, Ken Shelton will work with teachers in going beyond the tips and tricks of AI use and building an ethical approach that serves all students. 3rd-strike.com Reviews of games, hardware, movies, and more! Wed, 07 Oct 2026 00:26:17 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Fallen Tear: The Ascension – Review /fallen-tear-the-ascension-review/ /fallen-tear-the-ascension-review/#respond Wed, 07 Oct 2026 02:26:17 +0000 /?p=180563 Six months ago, when we sat down with Fallen Tear: The Ascension in Early Access, we were impressed by the game’s heart. Winter Crew Studio’s debut title was well on the way to becoming a beautifully crafted, character-driven Metroidvania game, leaning heavily into its JRPG roots through its clever companion system. At the same time, we couldn’t ignore its early rough edges: tedious backtracking, unrefined progression menus, and an erratic boss balance. With the 1.0 release officially making its way to Steam, we’ve returned to the now-complete land of Raoah. Can the full release live up to that early ambition? Story The overarching narrative of Fallen Tear sticks to familiar tropes, but it serves its purpose well. You take on the role of Hira, a young boy raised in a quiet village. There is more to him than meets the eye, as dark powers are dormant inside him. When demonic monsters destroy Hira’s hometown, his mother entrusts our hero with a mysterious artefact that can reactivate ancient technology. Hira must travel across the land of Raoah to cleanse the corruption caused by the elemental Gods themselves. The main plot of Fallen Tear takes a backseat to the action, with the game’s narrative strength lying in its cast. The world of Raoah feels alive thanks to the eclectic cast of characters Hira meets along the way. The game’s writing puts a heavy emphasis on character relationships. Rather than acting as simple exposition dumps, your allies have genuine arcs that form the emotional core of Hira’s adventure. You can dig even further into Fallen Tear’s lore if you want as there are 50 hidden ancient texts scattered across Raoah that add depth to the setting. Graphics Visually, Fallen Tear remains nothing short of a feast for the eyes. The hand-drawn aesthetic brings over 20 distinct biomes to life, spanning frozen mountain peaks, lush verdant plains, and desolate deserts. The level design makes great use of layered, colourful backdrops. The striking character designs are brought to life through remarkably fluid animations. Where Fallen Tear’s visuals stumble ever so slightly is when it comes to at-a-glance readability. Biomes like the Lilac Mire restrict your field of view to a tiny circle of light around Hira, making navigation a chore in this area. Additionally, the camera sometimes struggles to keep up when you’re moving rapidly upwards or downwards across the levels. Sound The sound design complements Fallen Tear’s atmosphere nigh on perfectly. Accompanying your journey is a dynamic orchestral soundtrack that sets a quiet, peaceful tone while you’re exploring and ramps up nicely during frantic combat encounters. The game also features full voice acting for its key characters, providing the core cast with distinct personalities and elevating the overall writing. Gameplay The foundation of Fallen Tear’s gameplay is that of a solid Metroidvania. However, the game isn’t afraid to break away from the familiar genre formula and introduces some unique mechanics. The main one that sets the game apart from other Metroidvanias is the Fated Bond System. Over the course of your journey, you can recruit up to 22 companions. Three companions can be assigned to act as active bonds for Hira. Once bonded, they can be summoned into battle for specialised attacks and passive buffs, like Bjorn the Chef tossing a hot pan for extra damage while permanently boosting Hira’s HP, for example. This sets the tone for something that permeates Fallen Tear’s gameplay: customisation. The game is as open-ended as it is massive, and the way you build Hira shapes how you explore Raoah. That also means that it’s unlikely that your journey will be the exact same as ours. Given that backtracking is inherent to the genre, we’re happy to say that Fallen Tear has taken a page out of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown’s book, allowing you to take a picture of an obstacle and pin it to the map. This makes remembering where to backtrack to a breeze, even if the map itself could still use a few more custom icon markers for specific wall types. In typical Metroidvania fashion, there are plenty of unlockable traversal abilities for Hira, including double jumps, air dashes, and ground pounds. However, the way you obtain these differs from what you’d expect for the genre. These abilities, called Ascensions here, are tied directly to earning Bond Points, rather than defeating specific bosses. You can head to a temple and unlock them in whatever order you choose. You can even attach elemental affinities to Ascensions to add offensive flair or extra range. Oddly enough though, you’ll only need 14 Bond Points to unlock the available Ascensions, but there are 22 available in-game, leaving 8 extra points with no functional reward, which does feel like an oversight. Beyond Ascensions and Fated Bonds, you can further tailor Hira’s raw stats to your preferred build by collecting chests. Finally, Fallen Tear boasts a robust achievement system, the so-called Fated Goals. The Fate Points you collect from this system can be spent on a multi-tiered Mastery skill tree. Our only grievance with this system is mechanical: you have to manually open menus to turn in these achievements, which interrupts the game’s flow. It’s not Fallen Tear’s biggest gameplay flow. That dubious honour still lies with the game’s structural balancing. The focus on customisation and freedom is a double-edged sword. Because progression is so open-ended, it’s easy to wander into high-level areas unprepared and get pulverized. Boss difficulty in particular is wildly inconsistent, with some early encounters and mini-bosses hitting far harder than late-game bosses, while others, such as Mechalevizz, felt like tedious damage sponges. Add in sparse fast-travel points (yes, still), platforming gauntlets with insta-kill hazards and random events that suddenly buff all enemies in the world, and exploration can occasionally turn frustrating. Don’t let that deter you from giving Fallen Tear a go if you’re a hardcore Metroidvania enthusiast. The game may be harder than you’d expect, but it makes actually achieving what you set out to do all the more satisfying. Conclusion The full version of Fallen Tear: The Ascension is a title where the sum is greater than its individual parts. Winter Crew Studios set out to create a sprawling, party-driven Metroidvania, and on many fronts, they succeeded brilliantly. The Fated Bond system brings a fresh JRPG flavor to 2D action, and the hand-drawn world of Raoah is a joy to behold. However, the game is dragged down by pacing and balance issues that feel unrefined. Uneven boss fights, tedious menu redemptions, sparse checkpoints, and awkward fast-travel distribution hold it back from reaching true genre royalty. If you’re a Metroidvania diehard looking for a huge, open-ended world with deep customization and great narrative flavour, Fallen Tear is well worth your time and money. /fallen-tear-the-ascension-review/feed/ 0 Lucky Luke Clock – Review /lucky-luke-clock-review/ /lucky-luke-clock-review/#respond Tue, 06 Oct 2026 01:39:26 +0000 /?p=180542 Move over Smurfs, Marsupilami and Asterix; there’s a new sheriff in town! Lucky Luke has officially joined the ever-growing lineup of Franco-Belgian comic-to-video game adaptations on Switch. However, the man who shoots faster than his shadow’s first Switch title isn’t quite what we expected. In fact, calling it a video game is a stretch. Then again, the title doesn’t overpromise anything: Lucky Luke Clock is, well, a Lucky Luke-themed clock. Should you pull the trigger on this one? Given that Lucky Luke Clock is more app than game, we’re going to stray away from our usual review format. We’ll get the obvious things out of the way first: there is no story here whatsoever, and although there is some form of actual gameplay here, it’s limited to a very simple minigame. The main focus here is on the app’s primary functionality: it’s a clock. A fancy clock, admittedly, but a clock nonetheless. There are two backdrops to pick from. One is an animation of Lucky Luke riding across the desert on the back of Jolly Jumper. The other is a peaceful campfire scene. The latter is probably the more interesting one, as vultures fly overhead, carriages drive by, and native Americans pop up to observe our hero taking a well-earned rest. In addition to a backdrop choice, there are also two styles of clock to select: either a traditional round one with a Roman numeral dial or a more modern style with Arabic numbers. The main appeal of Lucky Luke Clock is in its presentation. The app features true-to-the-comic visuals, accompanied by appropriate ambience and Western-style music. The visuals adapt in real time too, with the moon coming out at night. While we’d advise against having Lucky Luke Clock running overnight, it’s a fun little alternative to a standard, boring desk clock. That said, just two backdrops and two clock faces feel limited, especially since the source material could provide a wealth of other options. Why not have a Western town, native American village, or prison with some of Lucky Luke’s more prominent adversaries, like Billy the Kid, Calamity Jane, or the Dalton Brothers? Or perhaps the iconic ‘Poor Lonesome Cowboy’ scene that ends most of the comic books? The aforementioned minigame then, is a simplistic, Game & Watch-style novelty simply titled ‘Minigame’. In the game, the Dalton brothers are at it again, chucking lit sticks of dynamite at cargo. It’s up to Lucky Luke to catch the dynamite in a water-filled barrel. In what is a nice nod to those Game & Watch games this appears to be inspired by, the minigame doesn’t use real animations but static images instead. We would’ve probably appreciated it even more if the illustrations here had been rendered as LCD-style black and white sprites instead. Still, it’s a fun little distraction, even if you’ve seen what it has to offer within a few minutes. There’s one more feature to Lucky Luke Clock, but we couldn’t get it to work if our life depended on it. The app supposedly has a built-in alarm feature. We wanted to try this out, but no matter which way we tried to configure it, the alarm simply wouldn’t go off. We tried keeping the app open, putting it in standby, putting our Switch 2 in sleep mode, and toggling every possible combination in the settings, but to no avail. We might have missed something or done it wrong, but with no in-app explanation, we’re sure we’re not going to be the only ones who run into this issue. It’s probably quite telling that the eShop page for Lucky Luke Clock shows multiple screenshots for every other feature in the game, but the alarm function is conspicuously missing. For as simple an app as Lucky Luke Clock is, one thing that did surprise us was the file size: it’s a whopping 1.2GB. That may not sound like a lot, but this is still a simple clock app. It takes up around the same space as full-fledged games like Lil’ Guardsman and Thank Goodness You’re Here!. In a day and age where memory cards are becoming increasingly expensive, we can imagine Lucky Luke Clock to be one of the first titles to be deleted if you’re running out of space. At €5.99 RRP, Lucky Luke Clock seems woefully overpriced, given just how barebones the package is. However, given RedDeer.Games’ track record, don’t expect the game to actually be priced like this all the time. The publisher’s strategy still seems to be to create perceived value by putting their releases on a deep discount straight from the get-go. We saw this with nOS, Cyber Protocol, and pretty much every other game they’ve released. At the time of writing, Lucky Luke Clock is already heavily discounted to €1.99, a 67% launch reduction that lasts until the 22nd of October. That €1.99 seems about right for what is essentially a novelty app where you’ve seen everything on offer within minutes. Here’s hoping Lucky Luke’s next Switch outing is a bit meatier. Conclusion Delivering pretty much exactly what it says on the tin, Lucky Luke Clock is okay for what it is. The presentation is genuinely nice, and the minigame is a neat little bonus. While the RRP is definitely too high, you can expect this one to be discounted more often than not. At €1.99, this is nice to have, though we wouldn’t say it’s an essential addition to your library. Now, if only we could have gotten that alarm function to work… /lucky-luke-clock-review/feed/ 0 Burst2Flame Games reveals Stolen Realm 2 /burst2flame-games-reveals-stolen-realm-2/ /burst2flame-games-reveals-stolen-realm-2/#respond Mon, 05 Oct 2026 18:40:12 +0000 /?p=180551 Burst2Flame Games is a small team of passionate developers that gained significant success with Stolen Realm, a turn-based RPG. This charming co-op-only title won the hearts of many and opened the doors for a lot of developers and publishers to release their own co-op-only games. Split/Fiction was another recent banger, and it’s clear that many developers also want to create their own captivating experience that can be enjoyed with a buddy locally or online. In comes Orbitals, a Switch 2 exclusive game, that immediately won us over by its visuals alone. This old-school ’80s anime-inspired game entertained us during its short runtime. Story Honestly, we initially found the story of Orbitals a bit vague. You start in the midst of a crisis on a space station, and both Maki and Omura get put into a machine at a very young age. We later learn this machine preserved the minds of the kids and allows their bodies to be cloned when they would meet their early demise. Soon after, the space station once again finds itself in a crisis, as it is slowly running on fumes, and Maki and Omura need to venture out into space to find a solution. There is an anomaly not that far off that might offer the solution. All in all, the presentation is amazing, as the story is presented via many dialogues but also impressive-looking anime cutscenes. It does take a while before the pieces of the puzzle fall into place, however. Graphics Graphically, Orbitals is such a gorgeous game. The 80s anime aesthetic works amazingly well for the space adventure Maki and Omura embark on. The cutscenes are so well made that we felt like we were watching a highly polished anime series, and the in-game 3D graphics mesh well with the cinematics. In-game, the movements are slightly less fluid, but everything moves in such a way that you still feel like you’re watching a cartoon. We loved all the little details, and even when exploring the vastness of space, the universe felt lived in. The color palette was also in sync with 80s anime production, and everything proved to be pleasant for the eyes. Even during more hectic segments of the game, we didn’t notice any frame drops or stuttering, which really helped with the immersion. Some loading times were a bit longer, however. Sound The sound design is, like the visuals, superbly handled. The music was great; we enjoyed the background tunes while solving puzzles and exploring, and the accompanying sound effects provided good audio feedback. The voice acting, however, is what truly stole the show for us. The game has many voiced sequences, both in its cutscenes as well as during the actual gameplay. The story, even though it’s sometimes a bit vague, is a key element of the experience, and so the characters talk a lot among themselves or via radio communication with the space station. Gameplay Orbitals is an action-adventure title with a heavy focus on environmental puzzles that can only be played with two players. You can either opt for local co-op play or online co-op. Luckily, there’s the buddy pass, so only one player has to own a copy of the game. You’ll be playing through this short adventure by working together, solving puzzles, platforming, and just completing objectives. It’s all very straightforward, even though some of the game’s puzzles require some thought. That being said, the game never becomes overly complex or hard, making it a very accessible experience. Most of the game’s puzzles proved to be fun, which is really important for a title such as this. We didn’t struggle to figure out the solution to most of these puzzles, but some of them felt more tedious than complex, which was a bit of a shame. Luckily, these were few and far between, making sure that this short experience remained entertaining from start to finish. We were able to beat the game in slightly under five hours, making this a bite-sized space adventure, rather than a meaty game that will keep you entertained for a long time. We honestly think this was a good choice, as the game would have otherwise overstayed its welcome in terms of puzzle design. If you’re a fan of secrets, you can also unlock mini-games that can be accessed on the spaceship. Unlike other games in the genre, such as the aforementioned It Takes Two, each character can do every task in the game and is not reliant on character-specific abilities. This means that available tools and even the seats on your spaceship can be swapped at any time, allowing each player to experience every mechanic. This means you don’t have to replay the entire game with the other character if you wish to experience everything the game has to offer. It was fun to be able to fly around the spaceship and swap our captain’s seat to man the guns for the next part. Conclusion Orbital is a fun bite-sized space adventure game for two players, and while it can not match the same high-quality experience as that of EA’s It Takes Two, it does come pretty close at times. The visuals, the sound design, and the overall atmosphere are amazing, only held back by some uninspired puzzle designs and a story that remains rather vague throughout the experience. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for an entertaining co-op title to play with a friend or family member, Orbitals is certainly worth checking out. /orbitals-review/feed/ 0 Dunebound Tactics – Review /dunebound-tactics-review/ /dunebound-tactics-review/#respond Sun, 04 Oct 2026 03:35:12 +0000 /?p=180516 How do you follow up on what is likely the greatest turn-based tactical RPG of the year? I was watching this commercial with that dirty player who happens to be likable that plays in the NFL, Clay Matthews, as opposed to Suh or Harrison from the Lions and Bengals.

I got rid of my "Nerd Cave" in a few moves towards being an actual grown up who could a) play a video game in a dining room and b) have a big ass flat screen TV that my wife could watch HGTV on without needing me to deactivate my "Non Geek Destructo Ray".

Now that I don't have a Nerd Cave though, I'm imagining remaking one (when I buy a house) and I think I have the rough workings of a plan. I want to know what yours will be (5 details) but here's mine (media server and big screen TV are obvious).

1. Location: A tree house

2. External Logo: A giant block letter "4" in each cardinal directions

3. Furniture: Gaming table shaped like the letter "A".

4. Refreshment: Cold Jameson on tap

5. Other: Some of those display cases where I can display the outfits of my fave dead comics characters or dead wrestlers.

Bring it!

If you like this sort of odd stuff I'll be doing more of it here since i think I'm doing heftier topics with my other blog: <a href=" />

www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2013/09/my-your-nerd-cave-idea.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-4863361878407633408Thu, 29 Aug 2013 18:19:00 +00002013-08-29T11:19:31.908-07:00Pirates Can Be Useful...Sort of...Maybe

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="175" src="; width="320" />

You ever have those moments where you're just not sure what to put in one of your blogs so it just sort of sits for a bit? Well this is one of those moments and one of those blogs.

<a href=" />

So basically a study was done by Social Scientists in Europe that confirms a thing that I have been hearing for about the last year from people around the shop. Now our conversations surround the downloading of printed material but I think the conclusions reached matter.

I get asked how much impact of digital comics has impacted my Brick and Mortar comic cook retail business. My quick and dirty observation is probably about as much as broke customer "moving back home" does.

People have been telling me that instead of primarily shifting all of their comics purchases to digital download, they sample things they aren't sure they''d want to own a physical copy of and if they really like it SOMETHING HAPPENS.

There was a point about a year and a half ago where people told me the thing that would happen was they'd keep buying the series digitally. NOW we've reached a point where people are trying a series online, hearing their friends talk about a series and then coming into the shop to buy the collected versions of that series.

Apparently there is so much competition for their eyeballs on a screen that they can't wait to have that experience of buying SOMETHING in it's collected form. Now this is not according to my barely scientific research, a slam against digital. It seems like it's more of a move to ensure that if a consumer who may be prone to buying digitally is going to own something, then it had better be considered really good by the community. Community in this case is a group of peers and recommenders.

How does this relate to the study mentioned above? Simple, we're not idiots. We all know damn well that everyone who talks to us about their digital comics isn't buying them legally. Some of those folks have got to be using some swank (and at this stage in the game, rather simple) piracy skills to stay abreast of what's going on in comics.

Currently there are upwards of 150 different monthly comics titles on my shelves. a full 30 of them are Batman or X-Men related and while retailers and fans alike would live for all of these comics to be home runs, retailers and fans alike know good and damn well that this is not going to happen. Of the books on my shelves I'd only count about 25 of them as HOME RUN titles. That leaves a lot of room for doubt in the minds of consumers. Room for doubt and a lack of depth in the pockets is room room for piracy.

Since not every pirate hangs out with only pirates, the pirates talk about comics with non pirates and they themselves become recommenders. Having a few less places to pirate COULD delay piracy and alter the established trajectory of SEE> TELL>BUY.

I guess my ultimate point here is that I think it's plausible. No one wants to give pirates credit for anything positive because they are pirates but everyone uses them for something or another.

www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2013/08/pirates-can-be-usefulsort-ofmaybe.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-8480445902530415989Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:56:00 +00002013-03-20T09:56:44.464-07:00A Super Character Draft Pt. 1 (Betsy's Team)On Saturday night, the Chicago Comic Book Meetup group met at Third Coast Comics in Chicago. Generally we just have comics related discussion over beers but this time we did something different.

We held a Super Character Draft with the idea being that when we were done we'd pitch a comic to the group. This is comics. MOST comic book readers/buyers are going to be straight white males but given the efforts of publishers and fans even on smaller scales, this is changing and faster than DC seems to be willing to admit.

DC didn't just hire a famous writer who annoyed people to write Superman. Comic book companies seem to troll Hollywood for leftover plot ideas, leaping from the minds of vain celebs all the time. That could have been Kevin Smith or Michael Bay. People on the Internet and in comic shops would have had all sorts of gripes but everyone would have gotten past it pretty quickly.

These guys went for OSC and I have to believe someone in a meeting said, "You do know this guys is ON RECORD as a champion anti-gay bigot don't you?" I'd be willing to bet someone then explained that OSC and some other more desired writer shared an agent or something and if they hired OSC, they could get BIG FISH X to come on board for a Batman GN in time for Christmas!"

Note: Mark the date down so that when the announcement happens, you know I called it.

The problem with OSC goes beyond bigotry on the part of the politics and finances of the writer. The problem goes to the alleged efforts the publisher has made towards respecting and promoting diversity. it's as if DC has said, "Come on people, it's not like we've been cancelling comics starring minority characters, which we KNOW tend to have a hard time maintaining traction in a market dominated by white male reader dollars."

DC is hiring people and making business decisions as if each one takes place in a vacuum but for how much longer is this a viable option or way of approaching the quest for sales?

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="320" />

www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2013/02/the-problem-with-orson-scott-card.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-3628979411417413867Fri, 22 Feb 2013 18:55:00 +00002013-02-26T19:11:56.882-08:00We the People vs. Bigotry
(posted here because the FB link on twitter just goes to the HRC)

I'll try and make this simple. With all the publicity Orson Scott Card has gotten for being a bigot and getting to write a Superman story, Challengers Comics decided to give the proceeds of any Card Superman stories sold to the Human Rights Campaign.

Apparently some folks on Tumblr and FB don't understand how fighting bigotry works and have been giving Patrick a little bit of lip about it (in typical Internet fashion).

I happen to think Challengers is on the right path with this and fuck bigotry so therefore Third Coast Comics will also donate 100% of the profits of any copies we sell of Orson Scott Card's Superman to the Human Rights Campaign.

Personally this is why we read the exploits of superheroes, right? To be inspired to fight against injustice and inequality wherever we see it.

I don't see this as mixing business with politics. I see this as mixing business with human rights.

The damn books is gonna blow anyway.

<a href="; rel="nofollow nofollow" style="color: #3b5998; cursor: pointer; text-decoration: initial;" target="_blank"> class="blogger-post-footer">www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2013/02/we-people-vs.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-3331689885646259425Thu, 29 Nov 2012 22:30:00 +00002012-11-29T14:30:28.879-08:00Mission: Be Better FansRecently quite a bit of attention has been given to so comic book industry professionals who have found ways to simultaneously toss a nerd hand grenade and then throw themselves on the same hand grenade.

I'm finding it all to be sort of tiresome and I'm not posting links. You can find it yourself.

One minute we're all having a good time bitching about the quality of our comics and the next we're making each other prove their loyalty to the genre itself.

One minute we're pissed that Magneto is breaking up threesomes and the next, we're mad that some little know film maker said a few years ago that he'd love to have sex with some fictional characters but not others, in a way that makes me pretty sure I never want to see his search history or look in that box in his closet behind his old luggage.

I'm pretty sure there was a time when these things didn't happen in public but I can't tell you when that was.

I'm not really one to want to take a bullet for jack asses in our business but I will say it might be time for us all to help kill this before it grows.

Can we become better fans?

I own a comic book retail shop and when I hear someone in the shop making juvenile comments about characters (or worse, actual people), I pretty much let them know that we're really not in the mood for it.

There's a certain level of discourse I can deal with and believe me the bar is NOT very high but I don't need to constantly hear jokes about Power Girl's boobs or Batwoman's sexual orientation.

If you have friends who read comics and all they want to talk about is having their way with Thor, feel free to change the conversation to something like the current market value of Avengers Mansion or whether or not Nightwing is the sort of guy who'd get to a crime scene in a hybrid.

I already have standard responses for when someone tells me DC hates women or that the comics industry hates Black characters and people.

I do realize for us to all be consistent, we'll have to cut our fanfic consumption WAY down. You fans of Sherlock are SCREWED if you want things to get better.

Make no mistake, I like when we fans can think outside the box. I like when we deconstruct our favorite hobbies and cobble them back together in our own image. Ask me how often I recreate wrestling stables of the past with current wrestlers! We love to engage in dumb navel gazing nerd pursuits. It just seems that now we've hit a point where the things we'd have just said to our friends when drunk in the back yard are coming out of our mouths sober and on the Internet.

Can all of you help all of us be better fans? When you see a chick cosplaying Zatanna, Phoenix, Black Cat, American Maid, Batwoman, Maria Hill, Spider-Woman, Harley Quinn, Misty Knight, She Hulk, Firestar, or Dawnstar, just respond like you do when you see that dude cosplaying Fat Punisher or Fat Superman, Fat Shazam or Granny Goodness:

"Hey, nice job." - Meaning it

"Hey, nice job." - Totally faking it

"Scuse me Bro, can I check and see if there's a decent copy of Legion of Super-Heroes #294 in that box behind you?" - Meaning that shit because that's really what we're all at the show for.

At the next C2E2, I'm gonna post up somewhere and thank all of you geeks just for showing up. I won't even talk mad shit about that giant ass statue of Lorne Greene as Adama that you are wheeling out of the show or call too much attention to the fact that you stood in line for 2 hours and paid a lot of money to see "Celebrity X" when for the price of a martini you could have waited and met them at the bar.

I used to think that we needed to do all we could to make sure we even had a generation of comic book fans after us. Now I'm a bit more concerned about whether or not we can have decent conversations with the ones we still have right now!

Lets be better fans so I don't have to see people openly declaring that NOW they can't BARE to pay actual money for Guardians of the Galaxy while at the same time asking me if there will ever be a hard cover for All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder...

Yes...I'm leaving that right there....

Me and you...better fans...for our FUTURE!

www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2012/11/mission-be-better-fans.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-2228079631010172852Thu, 13 Sep 2012 03:24:00 +00002012-09-12T20:24:35.456-07:00DC ComicsEarth 2James RobinsonRecent Reads #2: Earth 2 #0I can remember when this particular wave of DC New 52 comics was announced months ago, being told by many people that they didn't think it would work. I know some folks just aren't so happy with James Robinson in the last few years and I have been defending his work for I can't even tell you how long.

The most common comment is that everyone LOVED Starman. My most common follow-up is Get over it.

I really thing James Robinson is an amazing writer that I'd love to see work with a small core cast and get the space to tell sprawling stories about everything from Legacy to Regret to Acceptance of the roles of heroes.

Please, Mr Robinson, take me through the 12 steps of becoming a super person!

Full disclosure: I couldn't get through his JLA run. I felt it was wordier than a latter day Chris Claremont Comic and that penciller Mark Bagley was not the best fit.

Not trying to bitch about it but I will do another post about what I;d have LOVED to see in that run.

On to why you should be reading Earth Two (start at #0 if you have to).

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="208" />

The New 52: Lemme Splain You -

Multiverse - It's a concept that's been around as long as any of you have been reading books aimed at nerds. There are many universes. The writers focus on one and sometimes bounce you over to another where shit is just different. Like the Star Trek Mirror Universe or the Cosby Show after Lisa Bonet slept with Mickey Rourke.

DC has one of those again. There are 52 Universes in their Multiverse (so far) and Earth 2 is...the 2nd one...yeah...

Now, on this Earth, in this Universe, SUPERMAN, BATMAN, and WONDER WOMAN are DEAD!!!!

They died defending Earth and that left Earth with a void of heroes and SO Robinson is reintroducing characters from DC's past as modern day heroes who develop sans a Holy Trinity of Heroes!!!!

Here's why you should pay attention:

In a "normal" Multiversal situation the differences are generally rather subtle. Superman has salt and pepper grey and Batman has a dog named Ace.

In THIS Earth 2, Their new version of Terry Sloane (Mr Terrific) has adopted an Ozymandias like role of "I know what's best for you and yeah you may have to die" which is a perfect background for this title.

Think the Other Universe in Fringe!!!

I LOVE` this book and you should budget for it!

www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2012/09/recent-reads-2-earth-2-0.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-8333763061753520382Thu, 13 Sep 2012 02:44:00 +00002012-09-12T19:57:35.809-07:00DC ComicsDCNew52Phantom StrangerRecent Reads: Phantom Stranger #0Dear Comic Book Fans: There is Hope - Stop Bitching

I don't really expect to keep this up but I'm gonna try and lets see how long it lasts.

The Internet has proven to be a place where fans can just rip everything endlessly but I'm feeling mad positive about my comics these days so I'm gonna try and give all of you my opinion of books that MIGHT be on your shelves and why you may want to give them a shot.

I'll start with books that came in recently and then in an update, I'll try and get to this week's books:

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="208" />

OK so yeah, the scuttlebutt is correct, THIS NEW`DC version of the Phantom Stranger is Judas, who is being made to atone for his crime by doing deeds in the service of what we can only assume to be some sort of "Lords of Order".

I have to tell you that the book was good anytime character were not actually speaking. I was wondering about what I could only see as foreshadowing of some possible story elements! That's a good thing. Then...dialog.

The dialog was distractedly bad BUT I'll give DC mad props for introducing the Spectre to the New 52 without attaching him to Earth 2 (which I LOVE). Go read it...just not too closely.

www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2012/09/recent-reads-phantom-stranger-0.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-3835231614795085305Fri, 10 Feb 2012 20:53:00 +00002012-02-10T13:35:56.107-08:00DC RelaunchPower GirlWorlds FinestWorld's Finest Ways to Make Sure Fans are Never HappyI'm gonna keep this short and sweet.

Well...I'm gonna keep this short and sweet for me...

DC's just released an image for World's Fines, starring Power Girl and Huntress, which is a lynchpin of DC's "Second Wave" of comics in their New 52 relaunch.

Here: />

<a href=" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 265px; height: 400px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707618513862564018" border="0" />

Fans have been clamoring for a return of fan fave Power Girl since the relaunch happened in September but now the internet is abuzz with "WTF" comments about the new look of Power Girl.

I can explain the look in a few different ways:

1) This look is VINTAGE George Perez. Perez is generally a product of the 70's and 80's in comics and in my mind he's a legend but if you hire a legend, you'll get what that legend does.

2) DC may be a bit self conscious about it's image as it relates to the ladies after last summer's kerfuffle about how they clearly don't like the ladies as evidenced by them working everywhere but DC, Catwoman's libido and whatever the shit was happening in Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 Featuring Starfire as played by Torrie Spelling.

Now Power Girl is back and it's possible that fandom has crawled so far up DC's crack that it has run away from the one thing that it had working for it.

History.

Power Girl is sort of a breakout character of DC's last decade and while many casual fans didn't understand the "boob window", it was as much a part of her look as Batman's arm thingies or Superman's red undies. It was sort of like that rope around Captain Marvel's neck.

No one knows why it's there but they miss it when it's gone.

I don't really want to bash this outfit too much but I do know that the most important thing about Power Girl in this story is that she and Huntress are trying to find their way back to their own dimension and she doesn't need a new and totally foreign look to do that.

This outfit is a space suit with a cape and that "P" symbol screams 1985 to me. I'm a huge Legion of Super Heroes fan and I bet this suit would look GREAT on Phantom Girl. In fact, it's the sort of thing that folks will wear in the year 3012 when capes and monogram clothing are as much a part of our lives as zippers and cell phones.

DC needed to bring Power Girl back but they didn't need to scrap the old look so completely. Especially if they were allowing Perez to add those HR Geiger inspired bracelets and boots.

I don't know. I like the new 52 and I expect good things from this book but DC needs to stop battling itself when the internet screams "YOU HATE US" and stick to what works best for it, which is great characters being done by great creators.

Soon, this costume will, like many of the Jim Lee redesigned outfits of other New DC characters, look pretty dated.

Power Girl's outfit here is so off the mark that I'm shocked she doesn't have a high collar.
www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2012/02/worlds-finest-ways-to-make-sure-fans.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-6946403787290348460Thu, 13 Oct 2011 19:10:00 +00002011-10-13T12:59:44.464-07:00DC ComicsKids ComicsWhat DC missed: KIDS!!!!!So we're all done with the 1st Month of the new 52 (and we're like 2 weeks past that) and it hit me that what was really missed was a chance to take on the one challenge DC said they really wanted to address, NEW READERS!

Now I know DC meant folks maybe younger than me who missed out on comics but why not go WAY younger and commit to 10 comics that are all ages that start fresh and are told in the "One and Done" format.

What do they have to lose really? They just committed to 52 books and I know they will have to axe 10 of those if they want to keep the quality up so here's what I propose:

10: Batman: The Brave and the Bold - It's a team up book and the book exists now and already works and you can just throw in kids versions of character that appear in the New 52 pretty much as they appear. In the 1st 3 issues, Batman can team up with Blue Beetle, Sinestro, and even Animal Man.

9: Young Justice: I don't care if ewe have the Teen Titans or not BUT, since the cartoon is still on, lets keep that book going. Young Heroes and Sidekicks having adventures!

8: Wonder Woman: When was the last time there was a Wonder Woman comic on the stands that a little girl in a comic shop could actually read? No offense to the great job that Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang are doing on the main WW book but a horse got his head chopped off all bloody like. Not for kids...

7: Legion of Superheros: Yeah I know the show got canceled a few years ago BUT this gives you lots of diversity and can be told in a "There's hope for the future" sort of way. Also it's KIDS HAVING ADVENTURES...IN THE FUTURE!!!!

6: The Power of SHAZAM: What the shit is the reason for not having at the very least a kids focused book about the adventures of Billy Batson, a kid given the powers he'd need to solve problems by the gods themselves!!!

5: Young Frankenstein and the Agents of Shade: Yeah I just bastardized the title of the main book but whatever. Make Frankenstein a kid monster and send him on missions with kid vampires, ghosts, wolf men and whatever!!! DO IT!

4: Tiny Titans: Well if this book gets canceled MFers would lose their shit. The soccer moms in the area of my store would do horrible things to their ex husbands. Can't let that happen.

3: Justice League of America: Ok so JLU is off the air and I'm mostly over it but kids should have a Justice League comic to read that isn't as campy as the Superfriends and isn't going to be as prone to darkness for the sake of darkness like Identity Crisis. How about a JLA book that tells the sorts of stories from the 1st 200 issues of the original DC JLA comic?

2: Superman: Because what kid doesn't like Superman! This also gives DC the ability to do what the Brave and the Bold comic does with guest stars. I'm really interested in Mr. Miracle, Orion and some of the other Jack Kirby creations.

1: Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew: Look, you may think it's silly but trust me. Put this book in the hands of a 6 year old and you'll have his families cash for life.

here: read this: />
<a href=" style="cursor: pointer; width: 263px; height: 400px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5663068728334739922" border="0" />
www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2011/10/what-dc-missed-kids.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-3280194910570634734Wed, 03 Aug 2011 21:12:00 +00002011-08-03T15:38:15.007-07:00Spider-ManTHIS IS THE SPIDERMAN OF COLOR: Now go away!Ok look, most of you are not reading OR BUYING Spider-Man comics these days and you haven't been for some time so after reading the stupid comments from the general public and the poorly written stories from the media in general, I'd like to explain things to you in the most basic form possible.

I lack sock puppets so here goes this.

The Contents of Comic Books are not real. They are just stuff written on stuff to talk about stuff.

Some cool people like stuff.

Marvel Comics is a company in the business of making comic books. I have already spoken as to the nature of where comic books fit into things that are real but I'll elaborate for the racists who are probably reading this, not knowing they've pissed me off.

Things that count in science (and are not theoretical):

People: Einstein, Newton and Hawking for example

Places: CERN, Pangea, Easter Island and Madame Currie's Lab.

Things: Bricks, Dolphins, Ice Cream, Sushi, Lesbians and the paper that makes comic books.

Things that science nerds like but may or not be real/possible:

Alternate Universes, Dark Matter and Time Travel, the contents of comic books (depending on your level of socialization)

Things that science would tell you are real:

Matter, Energy, Emotions of Stupid Mother Fuckers who don't buy comics

Now then, Marvel Comics as a company have created several alternate universes. For all intents and purposes lets call the one where Spider-Man is alive and still white, the M616 universe. This is how comic book fans think of it.

The Spider-Man you saw in movies and TV is not the M616 universe. Those were movies and TV and the people who make that stuff think not very much about what nerds think. They love their bank accounts more than they love your comic book continuity.

One of the universes that Marvel Comics created went through some major upheaval recently and because it's fairly new and NOT the main universe, this is ok. Let us call this universe MU2000 (Marvel Ultimate 2000) since 2000 was about the year this universe was created.

We have come to a point where Peter Parker in the MU2000 universe is dead as a doornail but the M616 Peter Parker is STILL alive and white (I state the latter because that matters to some of you idiots).

THIS IS THE SPIDER-MAN of MU2000

<a href=" style="cursor: pointer; width: 297px; height: 218px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636752375404826754" border="0" />

Now we know there just happen to be some people out there in the world who can't stand when something from their childhood changes or goes away. For this reason I think we still have things like all the stuff from the childhood of anyone 35-105 that folks haven't gotten over to the tune of giving something new a chance because their racist and withered hearts are full of poo.

For those of you with poo in your hearts, you blow BUT generally the M616 universe is still there for you. Peter Parker is alive and well and he's doing stuff.

Here he is:

<a href=" style="cursor: pointer; width: 291px; height: 440px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636755220550547426" border="0" />

Lets be honest, there's a white man under that mask for damn sure.

Now, knock yourselves out.

Now, as Spider-Man goes, I don't really care because I'm not that big a fan BUT I do care that assholes run to the damn internets anytime they hear that a fictitious White person has bought the farm, only to have a similarly fictitious Black/Hispanic person pick up the mantle. The bigot rage is so strong sometimes that you'd think a comic book company was about to have an encounter with a iceberg ala Titanic and sink into an ocean of ill thought out futurism.

In reality if Glen Beck (who bitched and blamed this all on Michelle Obama) and the majority of you racist jag bags out in internet land actually spent money on half the shit you showed indignation about, the world would come closer to resembling your world view. It does not because you are assholes and the universe hates you. You also have ugly feet.

Ok to summarize. Spider-Man is only "Black-Spanic" in an alternate univere of a thing that is also not real.

Comic books, while not being real, are still composed of matter and the energy contained within is still great, especially when a bunch of racist ass goblins decide they'll leave my favorite hobby to me and my friends.

For the record, I count among my friends the following types of people:

Blacks
Whites
Asians
Aliens, illegal or otherwise
Gays
Dems
Reps
a Libertarian
Some dumb folks
Smart folks
Scientists
This one chick from Germany
Geeks
Nerds
Some kids from Jersey
The Jewish Girl from Texas
Small Town girls who love beer
People with feelings
People in recovery
Pro comic book artists
Less than pro comic book artists
My Sister with lupus
My Sister who likes jean skirts
Radio personalities
Sports radio listeners
Catholics
Pagans
Travelers
Homebodies
Knitters
Boozers
Believers in the Power of Metal
Some Haters
and anyone who reads this and knows where I'm coming from.

If you can't accept that Spider-Man can be brown in some other made up universe then you are an ass and when you move to Asslandia, we will not miss you.
www.thirdcoastcomics.com
2011/08/this-is-spiderman-of-color-now-go-away.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630194366723823977.post-1059488485116821873Fri, 24 Jun 2011 17:59:00 +00002011-06-24T11:02:59.854-07:00BatgirlBatmanBatwingBatwomanBirds of PreyDC RelaunchNightwingDC Relaunch: The Bat-Network
If all the pals of Batman had their own searchlight signals, the skies over Gotham would look like Vegas!

Batwing by Judd Winnick and Ben Oliver

TF: I’m glad later press releases narrowed this down to a fictional city in the Congo rather than “The Batman of Africa.” I hear that place is pretty big.

DM: I don’t give a shit. School violence, whether it is assault, domestic violence, or active shooters, remains a real and significant threat across the nation. Because of this, school administrators are heightening their security focus in student housing facilities with an emphasis on comprehensive commercial video surveillance systems. The High Cost of School Violence The true cost of school violence is incalculable. There is no way to measure the loss of human life or the lasting impact of violence in any form. There is also the resulting financial cost. We have all seen it many times when unsafe conditions result in lawsuits that could have been avoided. College and universities have a huge responsibility of not only providing a quality education, but also a safe housing environment, and are now embracing both of those roles. The Importance of Video Surveillance Systems For Student Housing Video surveillance systems aid in significantly enhancing safety in student housing in many ways. Here are just a few examples: The presence of video surveillance Can discourage unruly behaviors Is known to decrease incidents of crime Can be used in authenticating an identity Identify offenders Be monitored to identify suspicious activity Professionally monitored video surveillance systems can help students remain safe in student housing. As a property manager, you wear a lot of hats and need the most powerful and useful tools to be successful. Property managers are those hired by a landlord, property investor, or owner, to manage daily operations over one or a number of facilities or sites. Typically, their jobs and exact responsibilities vary according to the need of the party which hires them and the type of facilities that are being managed, and can cover many aspects of the business. Here are just a few of the common responsibilities: Screening tenants Handling evictions Handling complaints or emergencies. Property maintenance Overseeing vacant properties Protecting the property against vandalism Video Surveillance as a Property Management Tool The responsibilities in property management are vast, but even property managers can’t be everywhere at once. They need tools that provide immediate insight into the status of the facilities in order to work effectively and proactively. Video surveillance systems provide that insight. Here are just a few of the ways video surveillance systems can empower property management: Monitor the status of the property remotely View vacant properties regularly to make sure there is no vandalism Monitor “move-outs” Verify tenant complaints Oversee employees Ensure maintenance work is started and completed Monitor for safety hazards, code violations, lease violations, etc. What You Should Know About Video Surveillance Systems Video surveillance systems are powerful tools, and the more you understand the technology the more effectively you can use them. Here are some important considerations. Know the system and its capabilities. Different systems can be composed of any number of components with a wide range of capabilities. Evaluate the system and learn what it can and cannot do. Talk to a professional. Gain insight from a professional about the system and explain what you’d like to accomplish. Most systems are adaptable or expandable. If it does not yet meet your needs, it likely would not take much to add elements to make it most effective. Find the problems. View surveillance footage from every hour of the day to look for problems such as unexpected glare from windows or other issues. Glare can cause your video footage to be ineffective in providing definitive data or proof should you need it. Know the laws. It is legal to use video surveillance in places where people do not reasonably expect privacy, such as hallways, but not where they do, such as restrooms. Consider video monitoring. Today, you can expect that any number of people have an eye on the facility and not all of those people have good intentions. Video monitoring makes sure that the good guys are always watching and ready to respond. Tenants and owners expect property managers to maintain security and 3RD Eye Surveillance is here to help with comprehensive video surveillance systems, professional monitoring, and access control. If you have a business, you need to think about all of your security options. The great news is– there are many options available today to meet every security need. So what’s the bad part? Trying to figure out what technologies can best suit your purposes! Today we will help by providing some great information about the often misunderstood technology, video door control. What Is Video Door Control? Video Door control systems are small audio/visual devices with a keypad that help you control access to any area. This provides a way for you to keep visitors on one side of the door and still see and hear them. Video door control stations provide excellent video and intercom communication and can be used on any door throughout a facility. What are Some of the Advantages of Using Video Door Control? Of course, increasing security is the best advantage these systems provide. A visitor can request entry into a facility without you or your staff actually having to open the door to them, avoiding potentially dangerous confrontations. When used throughout the facility, you can create areas where visitors can access, such as a lobby, and areas they can’t such as workspaces. With incidents of things like theft and workplace violence on the rise, limiting and strictly controlling access to every area is a major advantage. Another advantage is being able to control multiple areas at once, requiring fewer personnel to man doors and providing wider oversight. Video Door Systems Add to Perceived Value In addition to adding to the actual safety of all of the individuals at the facility, video door systems add to the perceived value of the services you provide. An upscale look and feel help elevate every aspect of a business. It may involve exterior changes like new landscaping and painting or complete overhauls requiring things like flooring, plumbing supplies, new appliances, and heating and air conditioning systems. Though every rehab project is unique, there are some important risks each have in common. Rehab projects are complex and expensive. One the biggest challenges is that building owners must store a huge amount of revolving and expensive materials, appliances, and supplies used in the process right on site. Sites are often unattended on nights and weekends which make them subject to vandalism and theft. Every incident of theft or vandalism raises the overall cost of the project. Having effective security coverage throughout the site is critical in ensuring the safety of personnel and the security of materials as well as keeping the cost of the project down. Top Reasons to Consider Video Surveillance and Live Monitoring for Rehab Properties: Having a professionally installed camera system just makes sense. Here are just a few of the many reasons. Theft Prevention— Rehabs sites have a lot of high value and easily sold materials on the premises and often those items are unattended at night and on weekends, making them a prime target for thieves. It is impossible to be everywhere at once and self-monitor those material sites while performing other duties. Vandalism Prevention— Another problem is vandalism. One act of vandalism can stall your project and raise your costs. Video surveillance keeps intruders out and prevents costly damage. Improve Safety—Having security cameras covering your supplies as well as in the project area can help ensure workers maintain safe practices. Reduce Frivolous Lawsuits—Know exactly what happens on your site and have video proof of events. Increase Efficiency— Monitor job site activity to eliminate bottlenecked projects. Ensure Swift Emergency Response—Live monitoring ensures that should any events occur, the right help is on the way as swiftly as possible. Before you start a new rehab project, video surveillance is the first thing Project Managers should consider. Covering the property with the appropriate security camera technology should be the first project on the list so that all of the other tasks run more smoothly.
