We found a great recipe for a <a href=" gazpacho in the New York Times recently, and we decided to make it our own (practically a law itself when it comes to things like gazpacho, salsa, and relishes, which unlike cakes and bread are quite flexible, calling out for experimenting and using what's fresh and available). For one thing, we doubled the quantities, and as we wanted a silky texture, we completely omitted the celery, which we felt would make the soup a little too fibrous. We also sautéed the garlic rather than using it raw, which we felt would have overwhelmed all the other flavors. And we used lemon-infused olive oil, the lovely, bright flavor of which we're hopelessly addicted to in the 3 Boys kitchen; you can substitute plain extra-virgin olive oil, of course.

The results, shown above, were brilliant (if we say so ourselves): it's a cool, spicy, and extremely "more-ish" gazpacho. And it's quite substantial--certainly it's filling enough to be a main course at lunch. If you're making it as an appetizer, we wouldn't recommend serving enormous bowls, or guests won't have room for your other dishes.

We will also mention that this is (obviously) a wonderfully healthy and reasonably low-fat, low-calorie dish. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

4 slices of a large Vidalia onion
4 pounds of 3 Boys Farm heirloom tomatoes (we like a blend of traditional red and a few Sungold cherry tomatoes tossed in for extra sweetness) coarsely chopped
6 fat garlic cloves, coarsely chopped
About 1 cup of 3 Boys Farm basil leaves, coarsely chopped
4 tablespoons lemon-infused olive oil (plus a bit more for sautéing the garlic)
3 tablespoons Champagne or white-wine vinegar
1 heaping teaspoon Hungarian sweet paprika
A scant 1/2 cup ice water (to thin the soup a little)
Sea salt
Fresh black pepper (have the pepper mill handy)
1 cup of very finely chopped cucumber
1 cup very finely chopped green bell pepper (we like the dice quite small, as you can see in the photo)
Optional: crispy plantain chips--vertically sliced, if possible--for garnish (they're available in the Latino section of most Florida supermarkets)

Put the onion slices in a bowl, cover them with some cold water, and add a few drops of vinegar. Let them sit for five minutes, then drain and rinse them with cold water. Cut into smaller pieces.

Sauté the garlic in a little oil over very low heat until it's soft and caramelized. Don't allow it to brown! Set aside to cool.

Then combine the tomatoes, cooled sautéed garlic (along with its oil), onion, the four tablespoons of lemon olive oil and three of vinegar; the paprika, ice water, and a good pinch of salt in a blender. Puree everything until it's smooth (unless you have an enormous blender, you'll probably need to divide everything up and do this in two batches). Add the basil leaves and puree until they appear as finely distributed throughout the soup as you wish (we like to see fine but visible green specks). If you've done two batches, as we did, now combine the two purees in a large glass bowl and mix well. Taste your puree and then add some ground pepper and more salt, if necessary (don't overdo the salt, of course). Cover and refrigerate for at least a couple of hours to allow the flavors to blend.

Toss the chopped cucumber and green pepper together in a plastic storage bowl. Season this, too, with a little salt and pepper, and refrigerate.

When you're ready to serve the gazpacho, ladle it into chilled bowls, then place a couple of heaping spoonfuls of the chopped cucumber/green-pepper mix in the middle. Arrange one or two plantain chips on top. Yield: approximately six main course-sized or eight generous appetizer-sized servings.2013/08/3-boys-gazpacho.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (3 Boys Farm)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4690987136841657611.post-4275793281941033994Tue, 14 May 2013 14:14:00 +00002013-05-14T10:29:32.726-04:003 Boys Farm's Robert Tornello on WMNF's Sustainable Living
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="220" />

If you're a fan of WMNF Community Radio, you've probably already listened to Robert talking eco-farming, as he's a regular on Norman B's Life Elsewhere radio show (every Monday at 9 a.m.).

This Monday, Robert was further honored to be invited to talk hydroponics on the venerable Sustainable Living with Jon Butts program, which airs Mondays at 10 a.m.

Novice gardeners and pro-level growers alike will enjoy this one. But 3 Boys Farm can handle the drought.
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="; width="200" />

Drought-stressed corn (Image: <a href="; style="color: #007ca5; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;">CraneStation/Flickr)

As severe drought conditions destroy record numbers of crops and endanger yet more across the United States, farmers are understandably reassessing the bill of goods they were sold by multinational Big Biotech companies who pushed GMO (genetically modified) seeds, always promising greater yields, no matter what conditions were, no matter what was sprayed on them. The truth about those products, as usual, turns out to be much more complicated than the superficial claims dreamed up by advertising copywriters.

We're reminded of a television ad from the 1970's in which a tiara-wearing fairy goddess scolds people who've just given her a muffin slathered with margarine that she is supposed to have mistaken for real butter:

It's not NICE to fool Mother Nature!

No, it isn't. Fooling Mother Nature is also a feat that, in the long run, is pretty much impossible to pull off--something Big Ag and Big Biotech companies would do well to realize.

From Wired's Science section comes <a href=" sobering post, entitled Why King Corn Wasn't Ready for the Drought. Apparently, even as GMO seeds--ones designed to tolerate, say, massive applications of weedkiller or pesticide--wind up causing unintended consequences (you guessed it: they're <a href=" Super-Weeds and Super-Bugs), biotech companies are still trying to fool Mother Nature, creating seeds they claim will handle drought. The benefits will be limited, however, and one agricultural economist says it's because Big Biotech has not, to date, viewed drought-tolerance as a moneymaking thing into which to pour research dollars:

If they work as advertised, the varieties could be quite useful in droughts of low to moderate intensity. Their utility in the crucible that much of the central and western United States is expected to become, however, will likely be limited.

It’s a far cry from traits like Bt pesticide production and Roundup herbicide tolerance. Those are powerful and ubiquitous, the agricultural analogues of blockbuster drugs, and have dominated company research efforts. “They are incredibly large products, and that’s why the companies have emphasized them,” said agricultural economist Greg Graff of Colorado State University.

Given the costs of developing new products, agriculture companies, just like drug companies, focus on those with the biggest payoffs. As for drought tolerance, said Graff, “We haven’t been trying that hard for that long.”
As you know, 3 Boys Farm is a largely hydroponic facility--we are, by definition, water-users.

But--and this is important--we never try to fool Mother Nature. We much prefer listening to her, learning from her, and working alongside her.

Which is why we grow from organic, heirloom seeds. And rather than ask "What manipulations can we make to the DNA of a plant in order to make it tolerate low-water conditions?" we instead think:

What can we do to ensure the water we DO get from our environment is put to its highest use?

Can we significantly reduce the amount of water we drain from the earth by capturing it from the sky, and saving it?

How can we prevent wasting water?
For answers to those questions, take a peek at the video at the top of the sidebar.-->

The solution to growing food in dry conditions does not lie within lab-altered seeds, especially given that such seeds then become the patented properties of corporate interests, ones that don't always align with human interests.

The solution to growing food for a growing world is to maximize yields within available resource limits. And you do this by combining simple, time-tested conservation methods (like rainwater catchment) with modern materials, such as light-filtering fabrics and solar-powered cooling systems.

Just as we've been doing at 3 Boys Farm.2012/08/water-waterwell-nowhere-but-3-boys-farm.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (3 Boys Farm)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4690987136841657611.post-4094949440242798753Fri, 03 Aug 2012 16:40:00 +00002012-08-03T12:40:21.980-04:00Demand for locally-grown produces continues to rise
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

The number of American farmers' markets continues to climb. (Photo <a href=";.)

Whether it's asking their local supermarket manager to please stock more produce grown close-to-home--and thus reduce the carbon footprint associated with their dinner plates--or visiting one of a growing number of farmers' markets cropping up around the country (see what we did there?!), Americans are voting with their wallets: clearly, they appreciate the superior fresh flavor and nutritive value of vegetables that spend as little time as possible in storage and transit.

Professional chefs are leading the way, too. As diners become more selective about the food they put on their own tables, so too are they asking for local-and-fresh when they go out to eat.

Chefs have long led the way when it comes to introducing new flavors and kicking off trends in cuisine--remember when the only kind of salad one could get at a steakhouse, say, was iceberg lettuce strewn with a few tough bits of tomato and drowned in Thousand Island dressing?

Creative cooks in forward-leaning regions--particularly those blessed with both the climate and terrain that supports a strong agricultural community, like northern California--helped introduce America to the range of delicious and wildly different salad greens we take for granted these days. The "Eat Local" movement is happening in large part because professionals led the way, one baby arugula salad with Meyer lemon vinaigrette at a time. It's only logical that diners would eventually want to make those fresh, unique salads themselves--hence, <a href="; markets:

"Farmers markets are a critical ingredient to our nation's food system," USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan said. "These outlets provide benefits not only to the farmers looking for important income opportunities, but also to the communities looking for fresh, healthy foods."

After 18 years of steady increases, the number of farmers markets across the country now registered with the USDA is 7,864. In 1994, there were 1,744. Organizations such as Slow Food, founded in 1989 to counter fast-food, junk-food lifestyles, first ignited consumer demand for fresh, local produce.
2012/08/demand-for-locally-grown-produces.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (3 Boys Farm)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4690987136841657611.post-4129217149137274993Sun, 22 Jul 2012 21:34:00 +00002012-07-22T17:34:40.287-04:00Meanwhile, back at the farm...(after the ACF Convention)
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="; width="320" />

Returning home inspired!

Sales Manager Michael Bresnahan and Robert Tornello returned home this week from a very successful industry trade show: the ACF Convention, in Orlando. We were delighted to finally be able to meet the people behind the names, that is, the top professional chefs--in Florida and beyond--with whom we have been working this past year.

And we have to say, we were inordinately pleased to meet executive chefs from across the country who already knew about 3 Boys Farm, and who had read about our leadership in sustainable agriculture.

In addition to having made new friends--and of course realized new business for the farm, thanks to the show--Robert was asked by executive chefs in Florida to assist them with their farm-to-school programs.

We'd like to thank the local ACF chapters for inviting 3 Boys Farm to participate in this superb trade show--we will definitely be at the next Florida ACF Convention.

And finally, we want to let you know that both Michael and Robert are available, at no charge, to speak about sustainable farming at your chapter meetings. And when chefs visit the farm, we can just sit back and let our lettuces, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and herbs sell themselves. I kept it up for as long as I did as a sort of digital scrapbook for my boys when they get older. It has been a relief to not observe every action, every moment and try to figure out how to turn each one into a fun blog post. I am back to enjoying those actions, those moments instead of stopping to take mental notes.

Thanks to those who followed my blog. I enjoyed writing it, and am now going to continue to enjoy not writing it.2010/12/signing-off.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-198867077978801600Sat, 17 Apr 2010 13:34:00 +00002010-04-17T08:36:14.072-05:00InactivityMy blog posting has taken a back seat to work travel and spending time with the family when I am home. Great movie!), and it contained a preview for the new Twilight movie. The boys have always wanted to watch the Twilight movies, which amazes me since when they do have bad dreams they are usually about vampires. After seeing the preview for Twilight New Moon, I think they changed their minds about wanting to see it. The preview was scary and freaked them out.

And, being a mom who seldom gets to prove herself right, I couldn't resist a little I Told You So. "That's why you can't see the Twilight movies."

"What are they rated?" Jack asked.

"PG-13. But some PG-13 movies are closer to PG, like Harry Potter, and some PG-13 are closer to R, like Twilight. Does that make sense?"

I was expecting an argument about how if they get to see some PG-13 movies they should get to see them all, but they didn't argue. My explanation made sense to them. Or they were still too afraid from the Twilight preview to make their case for seeing it.

For Jack and Luke, aging is not a progression of years but a series of milestones based on rules and restrictions. These milestones include things such as when they can ride in the front seat of the car, when they can have a cell phone, and when they can watch Lord of the Rings. These types of milestones have deadlines associated with them that are moving targets. There is no set in stone age for when they can do these things.

If one of their milestones was "When can I drive a car?" I'd have a clear answer for them backed up by law and the fear of arrest. But, for now, I'll just have to continue to answer in vagaries. And I believe it is for this reason, and my fault entirely, that now my boys "Can't wait until we're M for Mature so we can play Bioshock."2010/03/age-is-relative.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-8982583151111189211Mon, 15 Mar 2010 11:06:00 +00002010-03-15T06:06:00.560-05:00Intruder AlertThe tornado siren was going off. It took me a few minutes to notice it fully because the t.v. was on and the sun was shining. It wasn't the first Tuesday of the month, so I knew it wasn't a test. I looked outside. No clouds whatsoever. I got online. No tornado warnings. So I guessed it was just a test after all.

When I picked the boys up from school, I asked them if they had a tornado drill.

"Yes! And a fire drill!"

They were both happy about the break in their monotonous day of learning.

"I like the tornado drill the best," Luke said, "because I get to go downstairs." Downstairs is the domain of the older children, and grades K - 2 rarely get to go down there.

"I like earthquake drills," Jack said, "because I get to crawl under my desk."

These drills are clearly games to them, but I think they understand the threat that drives the drills. They know the meaning of tornado and earthquake and what they have to do to stay safe in the event of one of these disasters.

Then Luke said, "In Kindergarten, I liked the Intruder Alerts because I got to hide behind my coat in my cubbie."

"What's an Intruder Alert?" I asked, having never heard the boys mention these before.

"We pretend there is an intruder and we get to hide."

What sounds like a game to play in the backyard during the long summer nights is actually the scary reality of the possibility of harm coming to my kids at school. Though they understand the threat of nature related dangers, I don't think they could ever grasp the reality of a person coming into a school and hurting children. I think that is beyond their little imaginations, and they have HUGE imaginations.

It saddens me that my kids have to take a break from school work and fun to practice skills to use in the event an intruder enters their school. Unfortunately, in our world today, it is necessary. So, although I am not happy that the need for these Intruder Alerts exist, I am happy that the school is taking steps to protect my kids. And I pray that the day never comes when they understand the real meaning of the Intruder Alerts.2010/03/intruder-alert.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-1543040187425395445Wed, 10 Mar 2010 12:54:00 +00002010-03-10T07:07:37.777-06:00Neverending NightmareNow that I am "grown up" it is easy to forget the sheer horror I felt as a kid after having a particularly scary nightmare. I rarely have nightmares nowadays, and when I do they are made up of spiders, tornadoes, car crashes, or graduations where I discover I hadn't attended class all semester. These nightmares have an affect on me, but not the way nightmares surely did when I was a child and they were made up of monsters and my inability to scream or run away.

Jack had a nightmare recently about vampires. In his nightmare he was bitten by a vampire and I was shot and killed. He was, and still is, disturbed. While the possibility of him being bitten by a vampire is nonexistent, the possibility of me getting shot does exist even if that possibility is the minutest of the minute.

But it's not the part about me getting shot that has him upset. It's the vampire part. Usually when the sun comes up, bad dreams go away. This one just won't leave for Jack. He asked me to look at his neck for any marks. I did and told him I didn't see anything. "Look for two little spots close together." Nothing. "Why are you asking? Did you hurt your neck?" "No," he said. "The dream just seemed so real."

Ah. I was looking for vampire bites.

Then later he came up to me and said, "If I was a vampire, I'd run into the sun to die because I wouldn't want to live my life as a vampire. I don't want to drink blood."

I began reassuring him again that he has not been and would not be bitten by a vampire. EVER.

"I guess it wouldn't be so bad," he said, "if you and dad and Luke and Meemaw wouldn't mind if I bit you and then we could all be vampires together. And we would get to fly."

So then Luke and Jack started a conversation about the super powers held by vampires and Jack finally woke from his nightmare.2010/03/neverending-nightmare.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-4250863876204571081Tue, 02 Mar 2010 12:00:00 +00002010-03-02T06:00:10.347-06:00Step Number One...
When Luke is not listening, we sometimes call him our little evil genius. It is a running inside joke. He of course is not evil, but he has these underlying attributes that when combined with his smarts have the potential to form a potent and interminable adversary.

I know that he is a sweet, good-natured, caring boy who will grow up to be a sweet, good-natured, caring man. But those nano-second glimpses we get of his ability to manipulate; his scheming and conniving mind; and his enjoyment of pulling one over lend a slight corroboration to our nickname for him. Watching him is sometimes akin to watching Harry Potter - you know he is good but the potential exists for him to use his substantial power for performing dark deeds.

Lately I've been thinking that the evil genius joke has run its course. The superstitious bone in me thinks that if we say it enough, we may just cause it to be true. And I would hate for Luke to overhear our joking and get his feelings hurt.

But then I snapped this picture the other day while he was sleeping:

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442657642222324354" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

I think prerequisite number one of being initiated into the evil genius club is having the ability to sleep with your eyes open.

P.S. I think I have an astute attention to detail. I notice things often that others don't notice. I can tell almost immediately upon walking into a familiar space when something is different or has changed. I have in the past described John's activities at home just by looking around at what was different from when I left the house in the morning.

So when the nurse at school called me to tell me about Jack's injury, and I told her I was with him at school and would come by and talk to her, I was surprised when she said, "So you must have seen it."

"Seen what?" I asked.

"The huge lump on his forehead. It's very hard to miss."

I hadn't noticed anything wrong with him, and as I stood in the hall outside of his class talking to the nurse on my cell phone and berating myself quietly for being a bad mother, I wondered why he hadn't told me he was hurt.

"You need to stop by on your way out so we can talk about watching for warning signs of a concussion."

I agreed, and apologized for being a lame mother that doesn't notice a huge lump indicating my child had experienced a potentially concussion-inducing injury.

I went back into Jack's room and made a bee-line for him and his injured head. I started moving his hair around to see the injury. "Mom, gosh, stop it! What are you doing?" He was behaving like a normal 8-year old being embarrassed by his mother in front of his class. "Why didn't you tell me you got hurt?" "Because I didn't."

So I called the nurse back. She was adamant that it was Jack. I asked Jack's teacher, who had taken the injured boy to the nurse, and she said that it wasn't Jack. The nurse was surprised and couldn't figure out what had happened. She either wrote the injured boy's name down incorrectly or the injured boy gave her my son's name for some reason. Jack had not been hurt, and I hadn't failed to notice the goose-egg on his head that the nurse made me feel so bad about not seeing. I felt vindicated.

So a couple of days ago Luke said to me, "I think you need to give me some medicine. Haven't you noticed I've been coughing since Thursday?" I hadn't really noticed. Last night, he complained about not feeling good, but I thought it was just his cold and cough and him trying to get out of school. At bedtime I took his temperature. It was 103. He vomited all night.

So I guess I'm not that observant after all.2010/02/observant-or-not.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-3072697041445686906Thu, 18 Feb 2010 12:47:00 +00002010-02-18T07:03:48.127-06:00Sin City
Here's what you get at New York-New York in Vegas if you ask for a room away from the roller coaster:

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439564471725671522" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

That is the view out of our window. They never met me, though.

But, I ended up succumbing to the temptations of the city and was not disturbed by the roller coaster. She would tell us to pack the snow down hard into the bowl.

We would bundle up and head into the yard with our tools. We would be careful to walk in a straight line to disturb as small an area of fresh, white snow as possible.

We would scoop the snow, careful not to dig too deeply. Grabbing dirt or grass would render our scoop worthless.

We would scamper from one spot to the next, avoiding any spots with tints of brown, yellow, speckles or other evidence of contamination.

We would fill our bowls, scooping and packing, scooping and packing until snow overflowed the brims.

We would carry our bowls into the kitchen, and then transfer the snow into our cups. A scoop of snow, a pour of Coke, a scoop of snow, a pour of Coke until we had the perfect combination of snow to soda. The perfection of a winter slushy.

This week, we finally had a snow day. I told my boys about winter slushies with the fondness and nostalgia of an adult longing for the simple pleasures of childhood. They seemed willing to try. What they weren't willing to do was collect the snow.

So I collected the snow careful to avoid even the most minuscule speck of off-white knowing Jack would refuse to try the slushy if he thought the snow was dirty.

I transferred the snow into cups and poured in the soda. I added straws. I took the slushies to my boys. I waited for the reaction.

I got a "gross" from both of them. I was amazed. Maybe the delicious taste is rooted in the preparation, and they did not participate in that step.

So, I guess my hope of carrying on the winter slushy tradition has been dashed. I guess I will have to stick with the winter tradition of Jack putting snow down Luke's neck as soon as we walk out the door.2010/02/traditions.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-3779935750646366770Sat, 06 Feb 2010 15:47:00 +00002010-02-06T09:56:40.727-06:00Luke's Special Night
Jack had his first sleepover at a friend's house. Jack and Luke are both music lovers and have preferred to listen to the real deal, which just happens to be much of the same music that John and I like. When they heard Fireflies by Owl City on an ad for Kidz Bop 17, they asked John to buy it. And when John found out it came with a bonus CD, Kidz Bop sings the Beatles, he couldn't resist. I guess that is his sneaky way of getting the kids to listen to the Beatles since they won't do it through Rock Band.

I find Kidz Bop to be a slightly more annoying version of the songs that get overplayed on the radio. But I do enjoy listening to Jack and Luke sing and a couple of my favorite songs made it onto Kidz Bop 17, though I suspect that after a few rounds of hearing them performed in this fashion they will be crossed from my favorites list.

One of the songs on the CD is Paparazzi. I explained to the boys what the word paparazzi means. They asked me if I have ever been "a paparazzi." I said no, but that I was famous once and was hounded by paparazzi. They did not believe me. In fact, they told me to shut up.

I felt I had to redeem myself, so I told them that in college I was famous because I was the Queen of Love and Beauty. Their eyes got wide. "Are you teasing?" they asked.

"No, I am not."

After a pause for reflection, Jack said, "Dad got really lucky."

Luke said, "All the boys must have wanted to marry you."

I didn't deny it, choosing rather to bask in the glory of their awe. Especially considering that the day before I had spent most of the day labeled by them as "Trash Lady."

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432954353533693106" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 146px" alt="" src="; border="0" />
2010/02/my-fifteen-minutes-of-fame.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-1899792590873685229Tue, 26 Jan 2010 12:00:00 +00002010-01-26T06:00:04.254-06:00Vegas, Baby!On occasion, my work travels take me to a fun city perfect for piggy-backing a family or parents-only vacation. Such an opportunity has come up for a work trip to Vegas to turn into a weekend vacation for John and me (with a couple of our good friends coming along as well).

With the details still very sketchy and the trip itself up in the air, the boys heard John and me talking about it. They were VERY upset. They reported that they have ALWAYS wanted to go to Vegas.

How do you explain that a place with moving and talking statues, erupting volcanoes, pirate ship battles, roller coasters, circuses, tigers, dancing fountains, water parks, and on and on is not a place for children?

Luke crumpled when I told him sometimes parents need a kid-free vacation. He cried and cried that he was in bad need of a vacation. "How many days are in a year?" he asked. I answered 365 days. Through his tears, he espoused the unfairness of getting only one vacation a year when there are so many days in a year.

Reminding him that he gets the ENTIRE summer off, that we spend at least one week a year either in Florida or Colorado with other one to two day mini-trips in between, and that his life is pretty much one giant vacation did not help calm him down. Rather, he began packing his suit case to run away to a family that would take him to Vegas.

To Luke, it's not a vacation unless air travel is involved.2010/01/vegas-baby.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-2075225546655169496Thu, 21 Jan 2010 13:32:00 +00002010-01-21T07:38:44.070-06:00Career TalkJack and Luke like to talk about what they want to be when they grow up. Their thoughts on future careers have stayed fairly constant through the years, with Jack doing something related to fish and the ocean and Luke doing something related to animals.

Jack has started to branch out a little bit, realizing the range of possibilities for someone with his talents and interests. He talks about cartoonists, video game designers, and other outlets for his creativeness.

While Jack talks often about what he wants to be, he rarely names things that he does not want to be. Except for one thing. He does not want to be a police officer. His reason?

"My goal is to go my whole life without ever getting shot."

It's nice when your kids goals are in line with your own.2010/01/career-talk.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-6826809961549038459Thu, 14 Jan 2010 12:40:00 +00002010-01-14T07:01:17.226-06:00Our Own Indiana Jones-Style Booby Trap
We really dislike our basement ceiling. Our celebrations have run the gamut, from attending a ritzy banquet at a hotel to me going to bed at 11:00 with the flu. No matter the venue, the night together always started the New Year right.

This year we continued the tradition, only Brian was not physically a part of it. Brian lost his battle with cancer on March 17, 2009. The holidays hit his wife, children, family and friends hard drawing more attention to the void because of the special time of year and the traditions that will never be the same.

Although not physically there, Brian's influence was all around. From the bonfire and cigars to the heated games of Euchre to the stories and laughter, it was a night that I think Brian would have enjoyed immensely. I even stayed up until after 1:00 rather than the 12:02 I am famous for.

Angie and Brian's boys, our boys, and Angie's sister's son spent the day climbing hay stacks, traversing fallen tree jungle gyms, riding four wheelers, and playing DS and Wii. They even found an old (or new - who knows?) pair of underwear in a broke down pickup truck, and if you know boys you know that was a hilarious find that made the day.

By nightfall, the adults were exhausted and declared kid new year at 9:30. After about one minute of horn blowing, stick clacking, yelling, and drinking sparkling grape juice outside in the cold, the kids unanimously declared kid new year boring, loud and cold. That is all but Luke who fell asleep at 8:30 and missed the whole thing though we tried to wake him many times. Jack was especially sad he did not get to wish Happy New Year with his brother at his side, but quickly forgot this sadness the next morning bright and early when the New Year kicked in with a bang and the boys started their traditional brotherly bickering.

And I'm happy to report that the New Year has not diminished my boys' effect on the ladies. Angie's adorable niece had them smitten. I asked Luke if he likes babies and he said, "You mean hot babies?" I asked him what a hot baby was. He replied, "You know - hot chicks." I said I didn't mean hot babies. I meant real babies. With diapers and drool. He said, "I'll stick with the other." I guess I don't blame him. He changed his tune though when she started dancing to the music from his MP3 and saying his name.

Jack liked her right away and informed me that, "I am going to make her fall in love with me so she becomes my slave." To this I laughed and he said, "What? That works on babies." To which I replied, "And on women." I have yet to see that movie. I have, however, lived it.

Our Christmas was a wonderful whirlwind, with the boys anxiously looking forward to their first Christmas (Jeff City at John's parents'), second Christmas (St. Louis at my mom's), third Christmas (St. Louis at our house) and fourth Christmas (Courtois at my dad's). And these four Christmases did not disappoint.

Santa delivered exactly what they asked for, and even managed to produce a picture of Rudolph as requested by Jack. I love the mystery and excitement that comes with believing in Santa and will miss it when they stop believing, but the whole hunt for presents and setting up for Christmas morning will sure be easier once Santa is no longer in the picture.

One of Luke's favorite gifts was a gift I received that he somehow declared both of ours. It is a cooler stool, and I don't think I'll ever get to use it. It is in his room, filled with WebKinz.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420306046208146274" style="WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

He also got a camera, and has been working on taking that one perfect shot that will gain him notoriety as a photographer. This one he believes is the winning shot.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420306755568070882" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

We always see the most interesting things at gas stations on the way to my dad's house.

Jack got a DSi, and I haven't seen his face since.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420308730777142770" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

For the next five days, we plan to play our games, laze about, stay up late, and sleep in. But first, I have to figure out Jack's new alarm clock as it went off this morning at 6:00 am.2009/12/four-christmases.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-4486619206267669802Thu, 17 Dec 2009 11:56:00 +00002009-12-17T05:56:00.574-06:00Happy Birthday, Mom!You helped me get through high school.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415804586313892898" style="WIDTH: 333px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 378px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

You helped me get through college.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415852036110335490" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 381px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

You helped me find a job when I desperately needed one.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415805000827997826" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 283px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

You helped me get married.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415805370816423522" style="WIDTH: 277px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

You helped me give birth to Jack.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415804828033670482" style="WIDTH: 295px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

You helped me give birth to Luke.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415851611833702402" style="WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 311px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

You helped me grow up.

<a href=" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415806490857672002" style="WIDTH: 358px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px" alt="" src="; border="0" />

Every milestone in my life you've been there, guiding me and moving me along a path that I could be proud of.

But more importantly than the big events, you've been there for me always. He is sad and doesn't know why or how to put it into words. I try to explain to him how it is normal to feel blue after Christmas, after spending all of your hours surrounded by family and laughter only to have to start thinking about going back to school, after getting to stay up late almost every night and have every day bring something special, after waiting for weeks to open your presents and suddenly it's over.

So the other day he came to me and said, "Sometimes I feel bad after Christmas." I started to delve into my Christmas blues talk but he stopped me. He said, "I know that, but I feel bad because I think you spend too much money on me and in these hard times we should be saving money. Maybe you shouldn't get me so much this year."

I was glad to hear that Jack correctly relates the presents he gets under the tree to the status of our bank account. I'm glad that he has a feeling of financial responsibility, but I don't ever want him to feel responsible for our finances (at least not until he is a top-paid major league baseball player).

I thanked him for his concern and assured him that we were doing fine and that there was no need for him to worry about money.

Then he added two things to his Christmas list.2009/12/to-spend-or-not-to-spend.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-9063781374656524039Sat, 12 Dec 2009 13:40:00 +00002009-12-12T07:44:36.096-06:00What'd I Say?My blog has captured someone's attention. I don't know why, but my post Beyond the Dead has become the target of repeated junk comments. Every day, a few times a day, I have to reject a comment such as this:

最近旦那とマンネリで全然Hしてません。正直もうかなり欲求不満です…誰か相手してくれる方いませんか?空いている時間は多いと思うので都合は合わせやすいと思います。お互い楽しめる関係になりたいな。人妻でも平気な人いたら是非相手してください☆一応18歳以上の人限定でお願いします。上はどこまででも大丈夫なんで

Do these symbols actually mean something? I asked him if I could record him sleeping and put it on the blog. Not video, just audio. He said absolutely not.

John is a melodious sleeper. He's got his standard snoring, but he also has a symphony of other sounds that he makes while sleeping. I can't describe them. That is what the recording was going to be for.

I am a good sleeper. I can fall asleep just about anywhere, and it takes me only about 3 minutes once my head hits whatever pillow I am using. But, it has to be dark and it has to be quiet. And I'm cranky if it is not dark and it is not quiet and I am in my own bed. It reminds me of a scene from the movie Candy where she's trying to sleep and he's trying to watch t.v. and he ends up with his face nearly pressed against the screen and a blanket over him and the t.v. so the light doesn't disturb her.

So sometimes I wonder if it is just me and my need for silence that makes it hard to sleep through John's snoring.

The other night Jack and Luke had a sleepover in our room while I was out of town. John had fallen asleep with them, which is next to impossible as they are both active sleepers with legs and limbs flying about all night and smacking whoever happens to be next to them in the stomach and head. And Luke can sleep through just about anything. But that night he woke up, woke John up and said, "Daddy wake up. You're snoring three different ways."

See? But why should it be?

Each letter in the alphabet has one distinct sound and use.

OK, never mind that, but there is only one letter or combination of letters for each distinct sound.

Ummm, well, there aren't words that sound the same but are spelled differently.

How about each word only has one meaning?

It seems that every rule has an exception. No wonder it takes twelve years of school to get it right.

Right now in school, Jack is learning about verbs, nouns, plurals and possessives. If you were a teacher, how would you explain plurals?

To make a word plural, you always add an "s", like one snake, two snakes.

Unless the word ends in an "s" already, then you add an "es", like one bus, two buses.

Unless the word wants to be Greek or Latin, then you remove the ending sound and add an "i", like one cactus, two cacti.

Unless the word ends in a "y", then you take away the "y" and add an "ies", like one baby, two babies.

Unless there is a vowel before the letter "y", then you just add an "s", like one toy, two toys.

Unless the word is "deer", then the plural is "deer".

Unless the word is one of those words that follows no rule at all, like mouse/mice, child/children, or man/men.

Jack is doing pretty well with learning his plurals, but tends to follow the basic rules for those irregular words he hasn't memorized yet.

He brought home a worksheet the other day in which he lost a point for not correctly providing the plural form of "woman." His answer? "Ladies." I think he should have got bonus points for that answer.2009/12/no-hablo-ingles.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Heather)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6903922807992470992.post-53367471354281429Wed, 02 Dec 2009 11:59:00 +00002009-12-02T06:14:09.780-06:00Breaking NewsI wake up daily this week to a newspaper riddled with world changing news.

<a href=" Obama is intensifying the war in Afghanistan.

<a href=" serial killer is indicted.

<a href=". and Mrs. Reality TV fool security and meet the President.

<a href=" insurance coverage is expiring.

With all that is going on, the news Jack shares when he gets home from school is, "Did you know Tiger Woods crashed his car after cheating on his wife?"

So we talk about rumors, and spreading gossip, and how exactly he knows about Tiger Woods and his reported cheating. Innocent. Loving. Real.My son Jack is a caring, sensitive child with overflowing empathy. He often will give answers such as "World Peace" or "To End Hunger" when asked what his wishes are. And I'm sure he does want these things, but is he giving the answer he thinks he should give, the answer that he thinks adults want to hear?

Jack's school Thanksgiving assignment gave a glimpse into the real Jack, and I liked what I read. All day Saturday, Sunday and Monday, they alternated between getting tests performed, hearing that the tests showed nothing wrong with his heart, and sitting for hours without any information at all. They are such a tease as a taste of Fall! I love Fall here in No Cal. That is one of the main reason we moved up here from So Cal., was Fall. My husband drove me through Land Park, November 1988, and boy, was I sucked in by the sheer beauty of the midwest look and feel! I love the cool/brisk mornings and evenings, and the wonderful warm afternoons with the sun glowing softly! A time of hearty meals and lots of baking, and hopefully time well spent at the sewing table! Oh yeah, how could I forget, the warm, cracking of a fire in the fireplace!! A cup of tea and some handwork or a good book to enjoy the fire. Haading out to the pumpkin patch, decorating the house, inside and out for fall! Yeap, as tradition at our house, every Labor Day is when we decorate for fall. My hubby plots out on paper, yes, paper how he will decorate for Halloween, his favorite time of year. It takes him a couple of week-ends to get it all done! I love to decorate the inside of my house. We will get a 1 week delay this year since we will be heading down to So Cal for Labor Day week to remodel my inlaw's bathroom. They are getting older and need some major items changed out, and well, the floor needs to be replaced, base boards, and with the new fixtures and all, we really should paint to make the whole thing complete. I don't mind, they derserve it. I have wonderful inlaws. Very loving, caring and generous. Great role models for me and hubby. 54 years of marriage! My MIL has lots of good advice for me!! Have a great Labor Day, and enjoy the thought of Fall is almost here!!!2012/08/cool-mornings-are-such-tease.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-1310881111697271459Fri, 17 Aug 2012 13:50:00 +00002012-08-17T06:50:09.998-07:00Yoga, Ouch-a!I have been busy working on projects, and trying something new, yoga! I really should say, OUCH-A!! The instructor said sit on the mat, bend your legs and put them together. Well, I bent my legs, together, and my feet went together, but that was about it! She said don't fret, do what you can, your muscles just aren't limber and stretched out, so I did. She kept saying, do what feels comfortable to you. What feels comfortable to me, sitting in Starbucks, sipping an icetea!! But, I stayed with it. I do have to admit, I did feel better when we were through, but the next day, you guessed it, I was sore! But I am staying with it, I am not as sore, and I am getting more limber!! This is not the sort of yoga that Gran used to make us do before Knoty Ladies, that is for sure! ;-) I had my second class of Charm School, the project, was Say Thank You. I am using a very old line of fabric of charm packs, Regency II. I loved this line of Civil War fabrics. My son has promised to show me how to download from my I-phone this afternoon, so keep your fingers crossed!! I also have Drop In Applique at Ladybugs's in Manteca with the World Famous Lisa today, and I hopefully will finish my 1st block of my Dollhouse quilt so I can send a picture to the gal that is running the monthly group. I just hope I can get my legs and torso untwisted to go! Have a great week-end everyone!2012/08/yoga-ouch-a.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-1190442953493008889Sat, 21 Jul 2012 15:36:00 +00002012-07-21T08:36:05.910-07:00Summertime!Whew, I don't know about you, but to me, summer is flying by soooooo fast! We have been busy with baseball tourneys and just plain life in general. I have been getting a little bit of stitching done. Embroidery-some kitchen towels for Christmas, a Halloween Pillow-pattern from Crabapple Hill-The Pumpkin, working on Charm School-finishing our first project-Say Please, Disappearing 9 Patch quilt, a stack and wack quilt top made from Reproduction/Patriotic fabrics, and some other old UFO's. Not to mention I am FINALLY getting a sewing room. We are removing the bed from our extra bedroom, since we really do not have a lot of overnight company, and I will make that into my Quilting Heaven! I have also been attempting to keep up on our yard work, since I am still not working and both hubby and son have been working a lot of overtime. And yes, the pups are still keeping me busy, but they do not command my immediate attention as they use to, so that has been extra nice for me. I have also been working on a couple of BOM through my local quilt store-Fabric Garden, Merry, Merry Snowman-Bunny Hill Designs, and Garden Party-Buggy Barn. As I mentioned earlier, I am also doing a Mystery BOM, it will incorporate different techniques, which is really good for me, since I am not a good piecer.Tonight I have Stable Group, which I really enjoy. The ladies are very helpful, creative and inspirational! Plus we all go to dinner after, love the fellowship! Hope everyone has a great week-end. Still trying to figure out the photo thing on here!!2012/07/summertime.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-8141646298731673139Sun, 17 Jun 2012 17:08:00 +00002012-06-17T10:08:48.762-07:00Father's DayI know everyone knows that today is Father's Day. My dad lives 5 hours away from me, so I will have to call him this afternoon. Our son took his dad fishing bright and early this morning. They still are not back as I write this post, but he did post a couple of pictures on Instagram. No fish yet, but I am sure there will be plenty to talk about. Our son works for the same company as his dad, so they carpool almost everyday to work. Since this has been going on, a little over 1 year, I have noticed that they are closer to each other, and there isn't the tension between them any more like it use to be. This really makes me happy, but sad, my little boy has grown into a young man, someone whom I am very proud of. Of course, I did not raise him by myself, his dad was involved. I really should say we are the lucky ones. Chris has really not given us any trouble growing up, not to say mistakes were made by all parties, but mistakes help us learn and grow. I will grill Marty's favorite meal for dinner, tri tip, roasted corn, roasted potatoes and french bread. Dessert will be fresh fruit, blueberries and watermelon. I am very proud of the 2 men in my life! Wishing all of the dads out there, and single moms who had to be both mom and dad, a wonderful Father's Day 2012!!2012/06/fathers-day.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-6653437929457535312Tue, 12 Jun 2012 04:02:00 +00002012-06-11T21:02:40.418-07:00Time to Get Squeezed!!Yes ladies, we all know what that means! I use to have to go every 6 months, now I go once a year. My mom has lost both of her breasts to cancer, so they consider me high risk, even though they say you cannot inherit cancer. I rather be safe than sorry. I know so many people, both men and women who have had breast cancer. Thank goodness, with modern medicine, they are able to detect it sooner than later. My doctor is part of a group that teaches medicine, UCD, so they are pretty much on the new stuff fairly quickly. I do receive excellent care from every doctor I have came in contact with there. Even the techs, nurses and volunteers are very gracious and knowledgeable. I use to dread this day, but now, I embrace it, make a big brew ha ha, treat myself to a nice breakfast out. Today, I wasn't able to do that, but I did have a very nice chat with a very good friend of mine who has had cancer, and she wanted to tell me she was proud of me and make sure everything went OK, and it did. I do cherish our friendship and thank God daily for it! Wishing everyone a great rest of the week.. Tomorrow, I have "Charm School" at Fabric Garden. Thursday, I have "Garden Party", and Friday I have Drop In Applique at Ladybugs. I will fill you all in on it later this week. Hugs!!2012/06/time-to-get-squeezed.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-1431976898133945276Mon, 04 Jun 2012 01:04:00 +00002012-06-03T18:04:17.710-07:00What A Lucky Gal I Am!Today, I met up with some ex-co-workers. One of them had moved up to Alaska when she was laid off and was down here for a visit. It was sure good to see her and hear about how much she loves her job and Alaska. She is a live in care taker, and she is very fortunate to be employed by a very nice older man. I really do, but it is now at that point of time where I am the mom and my mom is my daughter. Mom is 76. Her health could be worse and it could be better. This picture is 3 years old, at our cabin in Mammoth. Since I have not been working, my time has been filled with taking mom to her numerous doctor appointments, helping her clean her place, helping her shop, ect. I am not complaining, but it is so hard to see her aging. Today she had her physical, and her doctor was very surprise that she was still driving, and had a very stern talk to both of us as to why she should not be driving any longer. I kept my composure, my mom did not. I could for once see through my mom's eyes as to why she was so upset. This was in her eyes, her last bit of independence. She has felt very bad having me take her here and there, a lot of my time devoted to her needs. She was afraid my family would resent her taking up my time away from them. This was not even close, my family understood, and asked how they could help. My hubby has been really wonderful, even though he and my mom really do not get along, he does care for her and worries about her. After my mom's doctor appointment, I took her to dinner at Mimi's, a place she loves. It was there I talked to her, a really heart to heart talk letting her know I feel her fear and disappointment of not being able to drive anymore. Her main concern was, who was going to drive her elderly friends to their doctor appointments when their family members were not able to. That's my mom, always worried about everyone else. I told her that there are people in town who were available for that, I would help her get her friends in touch with them. She could still visit her friends in her complex via her walker and check in on them, stop and say hi, drop off a book or magazine she has finished reading ,ect. She seems to find little comfort in this, she was more worried that so and so would not bother to go to their doctor appointment if she could not take them. I asked her to try and get some rest and I would check on her tomorrow, and we will figure this out together, she was not alone. I truly feel that God does not close a door with out opening a window, and this is my purpose in life now, to take care of my mom, with out the responsibilities of a full time job. My mom, she is quite a character, whom I love dearly!2011/03/my-mom.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-6312290466882858098Fri, 18 Mar 2011 22:31:00 +00002011-03-18T15:34:24.515-07:00It's Raining, It Pouring!Another rain storm has hit us in Northern California. We are so saturated, we are having flood warnings, and not just small creeks, but rivers and by-passes! At least one thing is good, tonight is Friday Night Sew, and with the rain, that should, hopefully, help motivate me to get some stitching/sewing done! Don't forget to check out everyone's blog to see what they worked on tonight, hope you are dry where you are!!2011/03/its-raining-it-pouring.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-7577229076317147040Thu, 17 Mar 2011 05:53:00 +00002011-03-16T22:54:07.888-07:00Happy St. Patrick's DayEnough said! My friend, Matilda, (the name have been changed to protect the innocent!) and I have been participating in a shop hop in the Central Valley and Bay area, and a little down the Central coast, but inland. It took us 3 days, but we did get to 20 of 22 stores! The only 2 stores we were not able to get to was due to the tsunami evaluations, and traffic was TERRIBLE! It wasn't for lack of trying for us, it just came down to traffic, other than that, there were no other problems or issues with traffic, just with me reading a map, but that is a whole other story and yes I do know my left from right, just no N,S,E, or W! What a great way to see other shops and also see what is going on in the quilting community. I was very disappointed, there was hardly any embroidery! (Except for Thimble Creek/Concord, which is my go to store now, they have anything and everything for embroidery and the staff are out of this world!!) Matilda has already plotted our plan of attack for Quilt Rush 2011 next month, and I cannot wait. I am sure/hope Jackie and Mona can join us! I had Christmas Sew Along on Saturday, but was unable to sew since we were finishing up our shop hop, but I plan to sew this week, so I will catch up. Oh, if you are in the Manteca area, stop by Ladybug Quilts, <a href=";. I happen to be there last Thursday when they received a shipment of Moda fabric, Dragonflies, OMG, the fabric is so beautiful! Plus the gals down there are about the sweetest in the world, and their shop is just too cute! Enjoy your extra hour of sunlight, I know I will, hugs to all!2011/03/whew-i-am-so-tired.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-2089807844793522136Tue, 08 Mar 2011 11:56:00 +00002011-03-08T04:03:57.473-08:00Friday Night SewThis Friday is Friday Night Sew. I have just started to participate in this a couple of months ago, and yes, you really do get a lot done. It's nice to have it on the schedule and when you look to see what the others had done, there is a lot of inspiration. So come on, sign up, join the fun, you will not be disappointed! <a href="; On the home front, I haven't been blogging too much, I have been so busy! Working in the yard, clearing closets and cabinets out, meeting friends for lunch/coffee, and catching up on some reading. Tomorrow, I am meeting up with 3 of my coworkers who were also laid off for lunch, and a afternoon of fun, window shopping! Have a great Tuesday!2011/03/friday-night-sew.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-9162682471865641958Wed, 02 Mar 2011 05:09:00 +00002011-03-01T21:16:24.315-08:00Cleaning, Cleaning, CleaningThat seems to be all I have been doing since I was laid off. I thought I would be relaxing and sewing and stitching, but no, I have been cleaning out the drawers, closets, cabinet, under beds, the garage, you name it, nothing is safe in my house thankfully, the trash man comes tomorrow, since there is no more room in the recycle can or trash can, and I am out of large trash bags for Goodwill. But, on the other hand, the house is clean and seems organized, which I like, so maybe now I can sew and stitch. I pulled weeds today before the next storm comes in tonight and tomorrow, and I feel so much better knowing things are organized, so I can relax, hopefully! I have some kits I have bought over the last 2 years that I can start on, I just need to decide which one! I am setting up a schedule for me, (I do so much better with a schedule), 1 day for working on UFO's, 1 day for cutting, 1 day for new projects, and 1 day for meeting friends for coffee/lunch/shop hop, and 1 day for errands/downtime for me. We'll see how that works, in the meantime, have a great week!2011/03/cleaning-cleaning-cleaning.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-3423687453227272891Thu, 24 Feb 2011 17:12:00 +00002011-02-24T09:22:57.417-08:00What's Been Going On?A lot has been going on, and thus, the reason for no blogging. First, I was laid off of work after almost 23 years of service, my employer has decided to dissolve my sales team. I am ok with it, I knew it was going to happen, and have been getting somewhat prepared for it, getting finances in ordered, making arraignments, ect. When we got our new Sr VP last November, he had a reputation of the changes that we have been seeing, so it was no surprise. God does not close a door without opening a window. I got a very generous severance package which means, I have a full paycheck plus until the end of the year, and they are paying my health benefits, so its somewhat a mini vacation. Hubby and I talked about it, and have decided that I can take 5 months off for me, something that I have never done, and start looking for employment come August/September. I am thinking about returning to work, but only part time, and doing something I like to do, not sure what yet. This will allow me to take care of my dear mom, who is not doing too well, but still lives on her own, and tries to be very independent, sew/quilt, garden and exercise and get healthy! Hubby is excited, because he can come home to a clean home and a hot meal waiting for him! I am not the June Cleaver type, I have way too much energy for that, but I will give it my best shot. Anyway, I plan on posting some pictures of what I have been doing, but first, I need to run some errands, pay some bills, and do a little housework, then I can play! Have a great rest of your week!!2011/02/whats-been-going-on.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-2852915740480261068Sun, 13 Feb 2011 02:09:00 +00002011-02-12T18:16:31.614-08:00Christmas Quilt Along Part 2Well, the weather was so gorgeous, I could not bare to come inside and sew! However, my rose bushes are pruned and I am ironing my fabric and cutting it tonight. I must say, it did take me a while to decide on what fabric. I am only using what is in my stash, and of course, as luck would have it, what I wanted to use, I didn't have enough, but I think I found some good choices. Tomorrow, I will sew. Hubby has come down with a nasty chest cold, and ya'll know how men can get when they do not feel good! GRUMPY!!! My sewing area is in our bedroom, so I will have to wait until tomorrow for sewing when he is up and at'em. He is feeling better, he is eating everything he can get his hands on so that is a good sign! I did get a chance to blog hop at those who did sign up and I want to thank those who were so kind to leave comments and words of encouragement for me. It is greatly appreciated! Until tomorrow, good luck and good night! Can't wait to see every one's creativeness!!2011/02/christmas-quilt-along-part-2.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-8030657628447937576Sat, 12 Feb 2011 18:55:00 +00002011-02-12T11:00:33.547-08:00Christmas Quilt AlongI woke up so-o-o-o early this morning, so I started reading through some blogs. I came across the Christmas Quilt Along, and thought, hmmm, I can do this. Now, the whole point of this entry is to let ya'll know I did sign up, and I got the pattern emailed to me very quickly, (Thanks!!), but I will not be able to start until this afternoon. However, I cannot wait, and I already went through some of the other bloggers who signed up, and I am getting some great inspiration from them! So please, check back, I should have pictures posted! I also have a goal this year, my quilt-mom, Carol from BP&HH mentioned to me that she tries to sew 30 minutes a day. It is really amazing how much you can accomplice in that short of time, so I am going to try that, although today it will be more than 30 minutes! Have a great Saturday, I am heading outside in the beautiful sunshine we are having and prune my rose bushes!! Hugs to all!!2011/02/christmas-quilt-along.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-2613237260723171955Wed, 09 Feb 2011 13:47:00 +00002011-02-09T05:51:02.321-08:00Friday Night Sew, Feb 18thIt's time to sign up for Friday Night Sew on Feb. 18th. I cannot wait!! My husband is now use to the fact that he will be in charge of dinner, and that I will have my sewing space-AKA our bedroom until 9-9:30 pm. I am hoping that there is a San Jose Shark game on that night, he will always stay up for the game to end!! As to what I will be working on, I will be finishing my Valentine wall hanging, and table topper-I need to quilt it. Off to get my projects ready, along with some new ones!! The teacher is Lisa Van Groningen-owner/designer of Kit N Kaboodle Quilt Co. I hear she is a fabulous and fun teacher, and I actually met her there, and she is so fun!! I am really looking forward to it. She teaches the "starch" method of applique, which I do not know, but I hear once you try it you are hooked. You choose the pattern, she does offer A Tisket, A Tasket, but I am going to do the Late Bloomer Quilt pattern in the picture, just in time for Valentine's Day. I am looking for the St Patrick Pattern by the same company, so if anyone has it and is willing to sell it, please let me know. I can not find it anywhere, and I am kicking myself for not getting it when it was available at BP&HH.I will post tomorrow what I completed in class. Gone are the days of pea soup fog and damp days. In place of them, are clear blue skies, white fluffy clouds, birds singing in trees with new buds sprouting. Playing in the dirt, dreaming of the yummy things that will be sprouting soon to be picked to eat, beautiful, fragrant flowers to put in a vase on the kitchen counter. A soft breeze blowing through the window as I take a nap under a worn quilt on a lazy week-end afternoon. Yes, I am dreaming and hoping this will happen soon. Off to bed I go, for I have dreams to dream tonight!!2011/01/what-i-am-dreaming-of.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-2456193106673687544Sun, 23 Jan 2011 03:48:00 +00002011-01-22T19:50:54.785-08:00It's Done!!Here is the finished project, minus the backing and quiliting. I will do that tomorrow. I cannot find anything in my stash to back it with so I am going to run to my lqs tomorrow and pick it out. I am really excited to be back at the sewing machine again, and I want to thank everyone for their encouragement. Until tomorrow, have a wonderful evening!!!2011/01/its-done.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-5744174821244696327Sat, 22 Jan 2011 05:10:00 +00002011-01-21T21:18:48.998-08:00Friday Night Sew-It's a Hit!I finally got to participate in Friday Night Sew, although I was cut short. Hubby came home and he and son wanted to go to In & Out for dinner, plus run by the supermarket-sale of chicken with bone(trust me, its another topic for another day). So I had cut my fabric out, except for the strips, so when we got home and got everything broken down and into the freezer, I headed back to my space to sew. And sew I did for 2 1/2 hours. It may not seem like a long time and it may also seem like I did not get much done, but for me I did. Please disregard the lineup, I have my seem ripper ready to take the sashing out, and I plan on finishing it tomorrow, after we return home for the International Sportsman Expo. This is an annual thing we do as a family. We are getting up early to get there when the gates open, and we hope to be home by 2pm. So I will have plenty of time to finish my small project. I am using it as a table topper for our dining table. I haven't sewed in so long, I almost forgot how to thread my machine!! Hubby actually thought that this Friday Night Sew thing is a great idea. He said I should be able to get more projects done and completed. I do appreciate his encouragement. Or maybe he just wants the tv to himself!! I can't wait to see what everyone else has done tonight. Sweet dreams, ya'll!!2011/01/friday-night-sew-its-hit.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-6484462537107305815Thu, 20 Jan 2011 23:19:00 +00002011-01-20T15:34:58.685-08:00Friday Night Sew, It's Back!!Yes folks, back by popular demand, Friday Night Sew is bad. I am going to try it this time since I have my sewing space up and running now, and I am finding myself at the machine more. Only problem, I need to commit to a day of cutting fabric for all of the projects I want to do. Last Saturday, me and my BFF attended the Modesto Quilt Show and we had so-o-o-o-o much fun! I think it is the best show I have been to in a long time. We originally paid for 2 hours of parking, and ended up going back out to the parking lot and paying for another 2 hours!! I am having a hard time transferring the photos from my blackberry to my laptop, but I am going to keep trying. Above is a picture of Colleen and Nancy Galloway in front of the quilt that Nancy did. It is a beautiful quilt and the picture does not do it justice! Colleen has this pattern and was so excited to meet Nancy, as was I. She is a very gracious lady, retired school teacher, so you know she has the patience of Job! There were a lot of embroidery, and applique-wool and fabric, and a great selection of all types of quilts. I can not wait for their next show, in 2 years! A log of great vendors, and a lot of new vendors. Everyone was so nice and friendly. We had ourselves a wonderful time. We were so tired! I bought a couple of books, and several patterns. Only 1 embroidery pattern though. I think I shocked Colleen! I also bought some beautiful vintage button trim, vintage wooden buttons, and only 1 yard of fabric, green of course, and civil war style. I have such visions of grandeur!! Now I just need to get started, so off I go! Tootles!!2011/01/friday-night-sew-its-back.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-7653401157134665170Wed, 12 Jan 2011 01:09:00 +00002011-01-11T17:20:53.218-08:00And So It Goes..........This week, on Thursday, in when a group of us ladies are getting together at my house. Known as "The Girls", we have been getting together once a month to stitch and kibbiz. We are not sure if we all are going to make it, but we are going to make a go. Shirley, aka-Gran, I don't think will be joining us. Her son has been very ill and is doing much better, and they are moving him home here in Northern Cal for him to recover. We are all so grateful he is doing much better and prayer for his added strength daily! We have a newbie joining us, Lonnie, my buddy from BP. I can't wait to see her. I will try to remember to take pictures to share. Saturday is a quilt show in Modesto that me and my BFF are going to attend, can't wait!! Then Saturday afternoon, we have football to watch-playoff game. I think my BFF and her honey will be joining us at our house, we will see. It should be a great week-end, I cannot wait! I don't know if anyone else has been following the news regarding the floods down in Queensland Austrialia, but it is just horrible! I know everyone here in the states are praying for a speeding recovery for all! Hope everyone has a good rest of the week!!2011/01/and-so-it-goes.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-3488783381310602476Sat, 08 Jan 2011 07:07:00 +00002011-01-07T23:24:29.218-08:00Goodbye To OrcaTomorrow morning, I will have to do something that will be very gut wrenching to me, I am having to take my beloved dog, Orca to the vet to be put asleep. Needless to say, this was not an easy decision for me, but we could not watch him suffer anymore. His poor, weak hips had not much strength left, as brave as he tried. He sight and hearing are fading fast, his voice is gone. How I feel guilty thinking back when I scolded him for singing to me in the wee early morning hours of summer, (1-2 am), wanting to play Frisbee when it was much cooler for him. I miss him singing to me while I have my morning tea, or when I pulled in the driveway. In fact, that is how I got the name Orcsmom. The whole neighborhood honestly could hear him talking as any of us pulled in our driveway, and they would say, "Oh, its Orc's mom". Thus, my personal license plate was ordered. I was very grateful when he did this when our son would come home, late at night. No curfews were broken for fear Orca would tell on him! He was a very good dog, pal and therapist. I could tell my problems and concerns to him and he would patiently listen, and I would hug him, scratch behind his ear and kiss his head, and off he would go looking for the neighborhood cats to chase. We would play tag together, he would jump on the back side of my legs trying to knock me down, and I would spat his butt, as he tried to fishtail out of my range. I lovingly would roast him carrots to eat, feed him 2 big stick Popsicles a night, knowing his love of ice. Grill him a piece of salmon for his birthday and 4th of July, or when ever it was on sale, while my mom argued that he ate better than her, then she would share her salmon with him. Lots of good memories, I will always hold close and dear to my heart. Orca, you have been a gem, I will always love you, forever. Enjoy teasing the cats in heaven! You will be missed, greatly by us all!!2011/01/goodbye-to-orca.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3541313582142506001.post-609581774602570536Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:40:00 +00002010-12-28T08:45:37.123-08:00The New YearI am sitting here drinking my morning cup of tea and thinking about the New Year. 2010 has been an interesting year, good and bad, but we made it through to 2011. I am hoping to get more sewing done, now that my week-ends are free from not working at BP, and I am hoping to be able to focus on more UFO's getting completed. I am hoping for a better economic forecast and market, and for the good health I have been blessed with. May it continue on in the future!! I am also hoping to spend more time with good friends and of course, my family. I am hoping to continue on this journey on living life simply, and free of extra "stuff" in our lives. To garden more, a bigger garden, so we can enjoy fresh, healthy veggies. I wish you peace and good health in 2011! May it bring you all you wish for and more!2010/12/new-year.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Orcsmom)1
