I took my time, rested when I needed to rest, and stayed in the same gear for the duration of the ride. I was impressed with my time as I have not rode for a lengthy distance for several years and I hope by doing this often enough I can bring my time way down to under an hour. I have mapped out some routes which I can cycle easily, these cover at least 5 miles each and should help me build my stamina and endurance for long distance cycling.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="322" src="; width="400" />

This is how far I rode last night, on Google Maps tells me that the distance is 4.7 miles, and I rode back also. So this makes the total distance cycled 9.4 miles.
I woke up early this morning to cycle some more, I knew that my legs would be a wreck, so I planned a smaller route which goes a similar way to the one took last night. I managed to do this in just over an hour, which I feel is impressive considering how hard I pushed last night.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="313" src="; width="400" />

I don’t plan on cycling again for another 2 days, to let my legs rest as I don’t want to push myself too hard when I have just started this training.

I’m following the guide on the C2C website () which gives a recommendation of 10 miles 2-3 times a week, building yourself up to do longer and more regular rides, however this is based on a 12 week programme, and as I have 57 weeks to train for C2C 2013 I do not need to push myself as hard, however I am planning on following this plan closely.

That’s all for now,

Kyle

2012/08/training-day-1.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2673286133298837598.post-7207072458037343194Sat, 04 Aug 2012 17:43:00 +00002012-08-04T10:43:47.336-07:00140 milesbikebike ridebkie ridec2ccoast to coastfitnesshadrian's wallkielderkielder forestscenicsea to sea. cyclingA Little About The Sea to Sea ChallengeSaturday 4th August 2012

The Sea to Sea Challenge (often abbreviated as C2C) is a cycling challenge which happens on the first weekend of September and has ran since the early 1990’s. The challenge is intended to last two days, however as there is no selective intake based on ability, some participants take a little longer. The Sea to Sea challenge is open to people of all ages and abilities, some riders in the past have been as young as eight years of age.

There are three main route choices for the Sea to Sea challenge, the first being the Coast to Coast Route, this is the basic route followed which was opened in 1994 and is the primary route which most participants follow.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="; width="400" />

The second route is Hadrian’s Cycleway, it may be pretty self explanatory but this route follows the path of Hadrian’s Wall.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="; width="400" />

The third route taken on the Sea to Sea challenge is The Reiver’s Route, this route differs from the others as it is not as direct from West to East, and ventures North before heading East.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="; width="400" />

As I have never done the Sea to Sea challenge before, I don’t know which route would be best to take. From the images on the site I can see that The Reiver’s Route looks stunning, and I love Kielder Forest Park, I think that this may be the route I am most interested in, however it also looks like the longest route, a lot more than the 140 miles of the Coast to Coast Route.

The Sea to Sea Challenge 2012 has not happened yet, and is scheduled to take place on the 1st and 2nd of September, this is something which I considered doing however I don’t think I will be ready to travel that length with such a short amount of time for training, this is the reason why I have dedicated my training to next years Sea to Sea Challenge, it also allows me to keep physical and athletic during my away time at university. Training for such a long amount of time for a challenge next September also means that I will be able to take part in an other cycling activities or challenges throughout the year, while I know that a lot of other challenges are harder and more demanding than Sea to Sea, taking part in that challenge is my goal.

I’m about to go on a 10 mile bike ride, my first time on a bike in over three years. I’ll let you know how I get on tomorrow.

That’s all for now,

Kyle

2012/08/a-little-about-sea-to-sea-challenge.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2673286133298837598.post-7519872579211882813Sat, 04 Aug 2012 12:12:00 +00002012-08-04T06:03:54.081-07:00140 milesbikebike rideblogchallengecyclingEnglandfirst posthistoryhobbykylemichaelsmilesOlympicsridingschoolsea to seatrainingTynemouthWhitehavenyearThe First Post: A Little History of How I Ended Up Here.

Saturday 4th August 2012
Before You start reading this blog, I'd like to make it clear that I have never wrote a blog before, I have never had anything interesting to write about that will also engage people, until now.

I’ve always wanted to be good at something, I’ve never felt as though there’s that one thing that people recognise me for doing. I’m one of those people who fears the question “so what are your hobbies?” cropping up on a first date or job interview, because the honest truth is I don’t really have any, and although we live in a digital age where most people sit in front of their computer all day passing the time on social networking websites, it is still not acceptable to claim that “Twitter” is a hobby, or “Watching TV” is a hobby, because these are seen as normal things which everyone does, and let’s be honest… if you went on a date with someone who claimed that their hobby included “Twitter, Facebook, and watching TV” you would quickly make the assumption that not much happens in their life.

There have been many times in the past where I have walked downstairs and said to my parents and sister “I’m going to become a lifeguard”, “I’m going to learn a language”, “I think I want to try fencing”, the list is endless, and each time without fail I simply get a “whatever, Kyle.” in response. It obviously goes without saying that the things I often say I would like to do never happen, but it still doesn’t stop me wanting to do something instead of sitting around all day.

I’m one of those people who, during the past year or so has grown tired of hearing about everything “Olympics”, although I did wait twice to see the Olympic torch pass: once through Birmingham where I attend university, and the second time in York when I was visiting a friend (though the second time I wasn’t so thrilled to wait around in crowded streets to see the celebrated equivalent of an oversized Cornetto that someone had set on fire). However, once the Olympic games in London had officially started, I felt as though I was missing an opportunity to be a part of something special.

In a way, I’m a little angry at my school, and my parents for not encouraging me to get involved in some sort of sport, from a young age I loathed football, and I still do to this day. However there were signs of potential for greatness in other fields of sport, for instance when I was young I would climb to the top of the highest tree I could find, even when I got older I would climb to see if I could get to the top. And I would run everywhere, and I mean everywhere, why did my parents not encourage this? My keen running attitude continued through middle school, and even into early high school, but teachers didn’t care, not really, there was already this one kid in my year who was good at running, they wouldn’t praise another. For this reason I slipped into the background at school, found a group of friends to hang out with, and kept my head down. I guess I enjoyed PE at school, my favourite sport topic in PE was Gymnastics, I felt like I was good at that, the teachers thought so too, but again they did nothing more about this, they did nothing to help improve my abilities, nothing to encourage me to focus on it as a hobby or skill. Eventually Gymnastics was taken off the agenda for PE, leaving me with the choices of Tennis, Dance, Rugby, or Swimming… all of which I hated.
I know that it would have been smart of me to take up a sport activity independently, but as a young teenager I had no understanding of sport clubs or how they worked, and any sport I did seem interested in resulted in a struggle to find a nearby facility. I would go on regular bike rides which usually lasted an hour every night for the duration of high school, but this was more of an escape from my house and a time to listen to music more than a keeping fit exercise. Eventually I gave up trying to find a sport and became interested in the field of media.

I graduated High school in 2008 with average grades, after the teachers at my school did very little to make me stay to study A-Levels there I enrolled at Newcastle College to study Media, Film Studies, Photography, and Sociology at A-Level. Graduating College in 2011 I was then accepted onto a Media and Communications course at Birmingham City University.

All of this brings me to July 2012, the big month for Great Britain to host the globally celebrated Olympic Games in London. Watching the athletes on TV really made me wish I was playing a part in the games, and I know a lot of people can say that, and most of them probably attempted to do so, but for me it really highlighted my lack of sport participation. Yesterday my friend Jack was over, and we watched the Cycling, Shooting, and Handball with my sister, after which we all joked that we would form our own Handball team and try out for Team GB for Rio 2016, although it was a joke, it still seemed like a possibility, as if three of the most un-sporty people could become so good at a sport in under four years that they get chosen to represent their country. (I should note at this point that neither of us are fat, in fact I have only recently came out of the “underweight” section of those weight/height ratio charts.)

Today Jack and my sister got up early to play Tennis, as I said earlier I hate Tennis, so I stayed in bed to wallow in my own lazyness, but in that moment, I had an idea. I went to the sports store and bought myself some half decent trainers and some track suit bottoms, I decided that now is the time I’m going to start a sport and stick at it. This afternoon while me and my sister watched the runners and the high jump my sister turned to me and said “You should start running”. I know where you think this is going, and I’m afraid you’re wrong, up until that moment I had seriously considered to run properly again, long distance. But when it was said out loud, it made the idea in my head seem unreachable, would I ever be as good as the people running on my TV? I know the probability of me going to the Olympic Games is very small, but you have to aspire to be as good as someone, and I don’t feel like I could be that good.

Where is this post going?

Whitehaven, Cumbria hopefully. As that is where the Sea to Sea challenge starts every September. This evening I plan to ride my dad’s mountain bike at least five miles, I know five miles is not a great distance, but as I have not rode a bike for a long distance in over three years I feel that five mile is a good distance to start at. Hopefully by improving the distance travelled and time travelled in by September 2013, I can take part in the Sea to Sea cycling challenge, which starts at Whitehaven, Cumbria and ends at Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear reaching a total of 140 miles (225 kilometres).

I understand that there may be blogs similar to this which cover the same topic, but my blog is dedicated to my goal and will act as a training diary, and also as a guide for anyone else hoping to compete in any cycling challenges. I am a total beginner, apart from a mountain bike which belongs to my dad I have no cycling equipment and no previous experience with the Sea to Sea challenge or any other cycling challenge. During the course of my independent training and the duration of this blog I will keep you updated with my progress and hopefully you will come with me on my journey.

That’s all for now,

Kyle
2012/08/the-first-post-little-history-of-how-i.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0S Newsham Rd, Blyth, Northumberland NE24, UK55.109211641214472 -1.502895355224609455.10467014121447 -1.5127658552246093 55.113753141214474 -1.4930248552246095
