By now Berlin Buzzwords 2012 is over and indeed we can say, that it was a huge sucess:
This year, we had more than 600 international attendees and over 50 speaker (out of more than 120 submissions). As well we had the biggest support ever from our Sponsors and would like to say thank you to all of you again!

We raised the numbers of speakers this year to make sure that we would get even more interesting talks in. To do so, we introduced a new talk format: the 20 minutes talk. So far, we got quite good feedback on this innovation and we probably will have a similar format next year again.

Talking about next year: we are already thinking of how to further refine Berlin Buzzwords in the future. Should we grow it bigger and reach out to more attendees in 2013? Do we want to incorporate a new track (at the moment, we are discussing the importance of data visualisation as well as big data used in science etc.) And we're still wondering how to get more women to Buzzwords – as speaker as well as attendees.
Your thoughts and comments about all this are very welcome! It would be great if you could share them in our wiki - we will try to incorporate that into next years Berlin Buzzwords.

To wrap up Buzzwords 2012:
If you would like to go back to the talks you missed while sitting in another session (or having a kicker match)  you can watch the recorded talks of all tracks here.
As well, you can download the slides of the given talks – browse through the sessions here.
And of course, there are many photos of this years Berlin Buzzwords.

It was great to have all of you at Berlin Buzzwords and we are looking forward to seeing you again next year!

Your Berlin Buzzwords Team

Berlin Buzzwords BarCamp on June 3, 2012
Found 0 image(s):

The Berlin Buzzwords BarCamp is back for our third year! Come along again for great discussions and knowledge sharing with your fellow attendees, on topics like Searching, Storing and Scaling. This time at a new venue in Berlin!

In keeping with the main Berlin Buzzwords conference, we're going to be focusing on similar themes. The overriding theme of the evening is NoSQL, with a side order of Search. Especially talks and discussions on using NoSQL in new areas, NoSQL comparisons (e. g. which is the best project to different content problems?), deploying NoSQL – case studies and war stories and also searching – Apache Lucene + SOLR tips and tricks.

The BarCamp takes place on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at c-base from 5:00pm until 9:30pm (registration starts at 4:30pm). Berlin Buzzwords BarCamp is sponsored by 10gen and Alfresco!

10gen develops and supports MongoDB, the open source, high-performance, document oriented database. 10gen helps support the MongoDB open source community along with the growing number of companies and projects that have been built on or have integrated with MongoDB.

Alfresco was founded in 2005 by John Newton and is the leading open source alternative for enterprise content management (ECM). It couples the innovation of open source with the stability of a true enterprise-class platform.

Check out the BarCamp wiki page for more information and to sign up!

BarCamps are a kind of "un-conference", where the schedule isn't decided until the day, and is based on those who attend. Everyone is welcome and everyone can participate in a variety of ways.

The Scout24-marketplaces have been search specialists since 1999. Since we are passionate supporters of innovative people and concepts we are very happy to be this year's gold-sponsor of the BerlinBuzzwords. Berlin Buzzwords 2012 and additional events are waiting for you!
Found 0 image(s):

Some weeks ago the official Berlin Buzzwords schedule was published: The conference will kick off with a keynote by Leslie Hawthorn on Monday, June 4th. Official talks are scheduled for both, Monday and Tuesday.

However as with previous years it’s advisable to plan some extra time for arriving earlier and leaving later. This is to introduce any additional and complimentary meetups and events that will happen around Berlin Buzzwords this year.

We are planning to have some initial meetups during the weekend before the main conference - right now we are still waiting for official confirmation from all organisers. However we do have the Barcamp confirmed already: Nick Burch is going to again moderate this famous Buzzwords early arrivals institution. This year we are located at c-base Berlin. Register now to reserve a spot at c-base.

Monday and Tuesday are reserved for the main conference sessions. On Monday evening there will be an evening for everyone who owns a Berlin Buzzwords badge. We will arrange for busses to get you to the event location.

During Wednesday, Thursday and Friday there will be meetups/ workshops/ hackathons for you to learn more on Apache HBase, Data Science, parallel processing other than map reduce and more. Stay tuned for the full list. If you have an idea yourself or would like to promote your local Berlin tech meetup talk to us to get your meetup included in the list. Please note that for each meetup space is limited, as a result please make sure that you are registered as participant to avoid standing in front of closed doors.

In parallel to the meetups there will be a few trainings provided by vendors from the search, store and scalability space. Please note that trainings are not included in the Berlin Buzzwords ticket and must be purchased separately.

So make sure to arrive early and leave late to get the full Berlin Buzzwords experience. Looking forward to meeting you in June, The Berlin Buzzwords Team.

This is hard to type as we're soooooo excited. Our keynote speaker this year is going to be EMMA JANE WESTBY!!!

Emma is going to talk about:

Managing Projects the Drupal Way
You're organised, you love spreadsheets, you're a great cheerleader, you handle a backlog with superhero skills, and now you're faced with managing a Drupal project and everything just feels foreign. It's not you, it's Drupal. The mix of site building, front end development, backend development, and over 20,000 contributed modules makes project management for Drupal exceptionally frustrating for people who've not worked with Drupal before.

This session will cover:

- the basic Drupal development workflow (from a developer's perspective, but without using developer jargon)
writing useful tickets which developers can accomplish
- estimation tips for multi-discipline tickets (design / back end / front end)
- ideal team structures -- and what to do if you can't get them

Bring your questions, and bring your experience -- plenty of time will be left for discussion at the end of the session.

Drupal as a publishing platform for podcasts
Found 1 image(s): RSS item image

Friday 22nd, 11:30
Presenter:
Session Level:
Session Theme:

Drupal is a great content management framework for building an online media publishing platform. And usually it just requires another contributed module to add extra functionality.

Very successful shows like Serial Podcast from the makers of This American Life, chose to build their website with Drupal 7. But there isn’t one tried and tested turn-key module for publishing podcasts, that then work well out of the box, with podcast aggregators like Apple iTunes.

This presentation will look at one essential module that can be the keystone for building and configuring a podcasting platform.

Some alternative platforms will be compared and one hybrid combination will be shared.

This presentation is aimed at publishers. No prior knowledge of Drupal is required.

Drupal, I love you, but you're bringing me down

Friday 22nd, 12:15
Presenter:
Session Theme:

I have worked with Drupal, wearing many hats since 2007. That equates to the entirety of my professional career since finishing college. In my previous job I worked with the CMS full time doing front end development, configuration, coding, system architecture, infrastructure, deployments and support. I started out working with Drupal 5 and over four years learned to love it from a development perspective. Four years later I moved on and founded iterate.

I am no longer a developer, I haven't built anything with Drupal in two years and never will again. My current role though still involves Drupal, a lot. We advocate and propose the vast majority of web solutions on the platform. Drupal has been the CMS we have used at iterate since we began and remains to be. It has helped us establish ourselves and scale while securing high profile customers working on enjoyable and rewarding projects. I do not envisage a time where Drupal will not be a significant part of the toolkit used by our development team.

My own perspective on Drupal is however different now as I work with it in a different role. This talk will cover some of the obstacles faced by both agency and customer and how they can be overcome. It will also discuss some of the ways Drupal is, has been and will likely continue to be which while may be great for developers may hinder wider adoption of the platform.

Why so sketchy? An introduction to sketching

User Experience Design is a balancing act between user requirements, business needs and technical constraints. Why then, do so many companies only involve their developers in the final stage of their projects? Involving your developers in the UX process from the beginning means they will understand the rationale for the website and the design approach. They are an invaluable source of information and will provide valuable inputs and contributions, which in turn will mean better design decisions.

In this hands-on workshop, you will learn about and practice the iterative approach of sketching with pen and paper (controversial). Sketches are quick visual representations of ideas that may lead to solutions. It's a collaborative technique, which should involve your whole project team. Sketching is not an art and everyone can do it so get onboard with this workshop to improve your Drupal websites.

Thank you to everyone who attended the workshop - we had great fun! You can download the slides from the workshop here. Keep practicing!

Presenter:
Session Theme:

Last year the FAI embarked on a journey to create a new online experience for Irish football fans. With Drupal the framework of choice, the challenges ranged from how best to meet the needs of all stakeholders in the football family, to how to create a rich multimedia and responsive experience for users. Match statistics were crucial to the project; the key technical and architectural hurdle was how best to integrate with UEFA's complex API's to deliver real time coverage of games in a Live Match Centre.

Peter Sherrard, FAI Communications Director will present the football perspective on the website build while Daniel Walsh, Developer will present the technical challenges the project posed and how they were overcome to deliver a best in class solution.

In this presentation, I'll walk you through the steps needed to create a CRM using Drupal 7 and RedHen.

Less setup, more development: Drupal and Docker containers

You've got a new Drupal project. But before you can even start working on the website, you need to set up your development environment. Pull the code, grab the database, configure a local web server, yada yada yada...

At Drupal Open Days Dublin back in 2013, I presented our solution to avoid this unproductive busy work: a VM containing a miniature version of our freistilbox hosting environment. With its rather big VM image, a long provisioning process and low content delivery performance, it was far from perfect.

Two years later, there's Docker. This tool for creating und running Linux containers has been around for a while now and has become a favourite of both developers and venture capitalists alike. Docker makes it easy for you to manage Linux containers, which are compute units that are much more lightweight than full virtual machines. You can spin up a Linux container from a pre-built image within seconds. Preparing such an image is easy, and thanks to a cleverly layered file system, images can even be built on top of each other.

In my talk, I'll highlight the most important features of Docker and demonstrate how you can use it to create an amazingly efficient environment for Drupal development.
