Can you name this person:

“We never try to convert those who receive [aid from Missionaries of Charity] to Christianity but in our work we bear witness to the love of God’s presence and if Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists, or agnostics become for this better men — simply better — we will be satisfied. It matters to the individual what church he belongs to. If that individual thinks and believes that this is the only way to God for her or him, this is the way God comes into their life — his life. If he does not know any other way and if he has no doubt so that he does not need to search then this is his way to salvation.”

This was asked the following in regards to the Hindus they worked with, “These people are waiting to die. What are you telling them to prepare them for death and eternity?” She replied candidly, “We tell them to pray to their Bhagwan, to their gods.”

“I’ve always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Catholic become a better Catholic”

“I love all religions. … If people become better Hindus, better Muslims, better Buddhists by our acts of love, then there is something else growing there.” Or in another place, “All is God — Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, etc., all have access to the same God.”

”When the priest is there, then can we have our altar and our tabernacle and our Jesus. Only the priests put Jesus there for us. … Jesus wants to go there, but we cannot bring him unless you first give him to us.

Who is this heretic? Mother Teresa

These quotes are taken from an article by Tim Challies. You can read the whole article <a href=" />
In conclusion: Doing "righteous" deeds can not make a person righteous or in a right standing before God. All of the works of both Hitler and Mother Teresa leave them each equally condemned before God. This is what the Gospel is about. That is why Jesus needed to come and reconcile us to God. This is why we need the imputed righteouness of Jesus applied to us. Our best efforts send us to Hell.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus name 2011/10/name-this-heretic.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-7227849020857714245Tue, 27 Sep 2011 01:33:00 +00002011-09-26T19:34:03.928-06:00VideoWould you have murdered the Jews if forced to by Hitler?<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="; width="500">2011/09/would-you-have-murdered-jews-if-forced.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-5504735651807702881Sun, 14 Aug 2011 15:20:00 +00002011-08-14T09:20:49.887-06:00DiscernmentWaiting for a vision to know God's will? Read the Sciptures instead. For the last 4 or 5 months I have had the opportunity to talk to so many people about discernment. It seems that everyone that I run into is struggling with finding out what God wants them to do. I always hear the red flag warning phrases like: "God told me" or "I had a dream" or "I feel that God is leading me" or "I want to do this but I don't know if it is God's will" and on and on.

These feeling based assumptions cause more problems in people's lives than anything. Instead of reading the Scriptures to understand how the will of God works, people wait for an angel to come down and direct them or for a dream or vision or open door. When people say that, "God told me" or they are waiting for an answer, they are really basing their decisions on their own feelings. They are trusting in their own deceitfully wicked heart to feel what is the right thing to do.

God gives us freedom in making decisions. If your motivations are pure and the decision is not sinful in any way, we really have a lot of freedom to make choices. Should you move to another state? Well, ask yourself why you want to move. Is the reason sinful? Will it help you grow spiritually? Use biblical discernment to make your decision and then, if everything checks out, get off your butt and do something. Otherwise you just sit around in a dumb stupor doing nothing but wasting your life. Like the man that really wanted to go to China to proclaim the gospel. He struggled because he just didn't know if it was the will of God. He prayed about it for 30 years and then died. If he would have understood biblical discernment then he would have jumped on a plane 30 years ago.

There are some things we don't have to pray about because God has already revealed His will in the Scriptures. Should I share the gospel with my neighbor? Yes. Should I help the widow across the street? Yes. Should I take revenge on my enemy? No Should I sue my ex-coworker who is a Christian? No. God has already revealed His will in the Bible and if we read it then we will discover it and be able to make decisions much easier and with more confidence. For all of your decisions that are not black and white in the Bible, use biblical discernment. Look at your motives, look at the benefits to glorifying Christ and your own sanctification, and look at any potential for sin and then make your decision.

There is so much more I could say about God's providential will and His revealed will and more on biblical discernment but instead of me writing 200 pages why don't you just read these great books.

Two great books on biblical discernment that I highly recommend if you are confused about what you are supposed to be doing are:

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="; width="142" />
1) <a href=" Do Something: A Liberating Approach to Finding God's Will, or, How to Make a Decision Without Dreams, Visions, Fleeces, Impressions, Open Doors, Random Bible Verses, Casting Lots, Liver Shivers, Writing in the Sky by Kevin DeYoung

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="; width="132" />
2) <a href=" Discipline of Spiritual Discernment by Tim Challies2011/08/waiting-for-vision-to-know-gods-will.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-8044809050530082405Thu, 11 Aug 2011 03:04:00 +00002011-08-10T21:04:16.391-06:00VideoPaul Washer - Quenching the Spirit<param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="390" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">2011/08/paul-washer-quenching-spirit.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-7450397873106580621Fri, 05 Aug 2011 16:17:00 +00002011-08-05T10:17:00.256-06:00witnessingOpen-Air preaching at Helena street party. So much has been happening that I have been too busy to blog but we have got to share the gospel with so many people lately. Amazing things happened when I was in Sidney, MT for a week. My missions blog tells the story <a href="; My friend Brandon come over from Sidney to hang out and do some street evangelism for a few days before we leave the country. We hit alive at 5 with TJ and got to share the gospel with a ton of people. Some conversations went very well and some did not but the gospel was proclaimed.

Brandon was so burdened that he stood up amongst several hundred people and open-air preached. The band wasn't playing yet but there was a lot of noise and commotion until Brandon yelled, "Can I have your attention" in a voice like Whitefield. Everyone in the place stopped and turned to us. Brandon began to speak about the fact that everyone would die one day and he asked them where they would go when they died. Some people mocked. Brandon kept going into the gospel. At this time the band found out what was going on and they cranked up the speakers that were playing the radio about as loud as they could go in order to drowned out Brandon's voice. He spoke louder but eventually had to quit because the music became deafening.

When you go into the devils dark territory and begin to send out a great light, he will do whatever it takes to send you back to where you came from. And this night the devil had many of his slaves ready for action. But greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. Brandon opened his mouth for the Kingdom of Christ to be advanced and hundreds of people heard a short gospel message. This is more lost people than the average Montana church preaches the gospel to in a year. This is the means that the Kingdom of Christ has always been advanced. Praise God for the boldness that He gives us and may He give His servants a renewed sense of boldness today and that they take this new boldness and proclaim that gospel to anything that breaths.2011/08/open-air-preaching-at-helena-street.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-2844275465947038175Fri, 22 Jul 2011 13:48:00 +00002011-07-22T07:48:02.214-06:00VideoMatt Chandler - Horrified<param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="314" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">2011/07/matt-chandler-horrified.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-6569478175672721452Sun, 19 Jun 2011 20:31:00 +00002011-06-19T14:31:31.811-06:00VideoAll I have is Christ<param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="314" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">2011/06/all-i-have-is-christ.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-6304730112165739763Thu, 09 Jun 2011 17:22:00 +00002011-06-09T11:22:10.321-06:00witnessingThe Spirit of God is still working on the street! It had rained for 3 days straight but when I called TJ to see if he still wanted to go share the gospel at the “Alive at 5” street party, he was all for it. Alive at 5 was, of course, cancelled so we just hit the walking mall. TJ shared the gospel with a whole bunch of teenagers that mocked him the whole time. I almost can’t stand witnessing to a group of 13-17 year olds. Because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and kids today have no fear of the Lord, they are very stupid. Most of them are not capable of having a conversation about anything but a cell phone or iPod. I guess I am ranting a little but I want to find their derelict parents and slap them around for giving their 13 year old kid a cell phone and some cash and turning them loose to run the streets all night.

We gave out a lot of tracts to the surprising amount of people walking around in the rain. The first person that I shared the gospel with was an older lady with some meditation beads which is what I used to start off the conversation. She told me all about them but didn’t really know much. We talked for a while about different beliefs and what she thought happened when a person died and then I swung to the Scriptures and the Law which brings the knowledge of sin. She now was not a happy camper and advised me, in a daring command, that she wasn’t the person I wanted to talk to about this stuff. I took it as a challenge. We went through the law and I was able, by the grace of God, to share the whole biblical gospel with her. She admitted to breaking God’s law but said she was going to heaven because she wanted to. Everyone wants to go to Heaven, they just don’t want the God of the Bible there with them. She finally got sick of talking and stormed off.

We got out of the rain at Starbucks and tried to start up a conversation but there was none to take it. Some of the punk kids that TJ witnessed to early were there. One of the kids, too loudly, told his friends that the Jesus freaks were here. I stood up and asked the kid what he had said and he got scared and said we were the people that talked to them about Jesus. As we left, they mocked us more. Again…derelict parents to blame.

I next found a man in his 50’s that did have alcohol on his breath but we had a great talk. He grew up Catholic like me and also saw the hypocrisy in the church. I shared my testimony and then we talked about God’s justice and the necessity of God punishing law breakers. He thought he would go to heaven because he believed in his heart that he would because he was good. That changed after we went through the law. God began breaking the man down in the pouring rain. He admitted his sin and the state of his soul. I gave him the good news and explained Jesus as our sin-bearing substitute to satisfy God’s justice. It seemed to make sense to him. He was very convicted as we parted ways and he said he had a bible at home, which is where he was heading.

I tried to share the gospel with some “ultra runners” but these people have their own culture that is centered around themselves. They openly mocked me and Christianity and showed their indignant hatred of Christ.

That last two people that I shared the gospel with is the type of God-ordained encounter that we always hope for. The couple was in their late 20’s and they both grew up Catholic. The guy was actually kicked out of the Catholic church when he was in his teens because he asked too many questions about the Bible that the priest couldn’t answer. The two questions that the priest couldn’t answer and that he still had never found an answer to were very common and simple questions to answer for anyone who actually knows the Bible. He wanted to know if the Bible talked about dinosaurs and why incest was deemed good when Adam and Eve first started populating the earth. I answered both questions and then went into the law. The guy actually went as far from Catholicism as he could and now believed in reincarnation. He soon admitted he had no basis of his beliefs other than it sounded good. As we talked about sin and the justice of God with many illustrations both the guy and his wife had a change of countenance on their face as God was beginning to reveal to them their sin and break them down. I explained the glorious cross and they stared at the ground, realizing the predicament they were in but didn’t really know how to take this substitutionary atonement. I explained repentance and urged them to believe. They knew they would die one day like the rest of all the living. We shook hands and parted ways to let the Spirit of God continue to work in them.

Are you encouraged by these stories? Do you know what will happen if you don’t share the gospel? Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. You will never see God work in these glorious ways. God will continue to fulfill His purposes and God will continue to raise up His obedient servants to proclaim the gospel to the perishing but you will suffer loss. You will never experience God in this way. If only you would die to yourself and get out of your easy, comfortable lifestyle and do something. When you see God working in people before your eyes, you become so revived and on fire that you can’t imagine wasting your life doing anything else. The world stops. Your priorities change. The world fades away. Do something, do something, do something for the glory of Christ and the advancement of the Kingdom.2011/06/spirit-of-god-is-still-working-on.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-8228535910060285970Mon, 06 Jun 2011 18:34:00 +00002011-06-06T12:34:06.196-06:00VideoAre you striving to retire?<param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="; It was such a great conference and we all had great fellowship, building new friendships and strengthening others. Some amazing things happened at the conference and we could see God in it. It is a very amazing thing to get a room full of men together singing and worshiping God. We had great music thanks to Fellowship Baptist Church of Sidney supplying their men to lead us. One of the funniest things that happened was when Tim Killillay prayed over John Wallace that if John never glorified God in his preaching that God would strike him dead and preach through his corpse. This is Mr. Killillay. We all understood what Tim meant but we all joked about it the rest of the weekend. I do believe that in the conference, God was glorified, the burden of others were carried, Christians were fed spiritually to overflowing, new friendships were made, and the Spirt of God was present. These guys vile, almost as bad as me. I walked up to the group and handed out tracts. One guy, the most outspoken and obnoxious man started in on me right away. He mocked the tract with a string of cuss words that he cleverly wove together. Once I started talking to the miners about death and where they would go when they died, the obnoxious man jumped in and told me to leave and that this was no place to be doing what I was doing. He asked if I was scared and I said that I wasn’t scared at all. He then backed off so I was able to share the gospel with the rest of them. They were hardened but the seed was planted. Some of them ripped up the tract in many pieces in front of me, without reading them.

The mystics

Around the corner I ran into a couple guys and a girl. I struck up a conversation and we ended up debating about the things of God for a long time. They had no logic to their arguments and were stuck on the bizarre idea that they could make their own truth.

The canoeist

I ran into a guy that was canoeing from three forks on the Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico. He said he was going on the trip to lose himself and be out of the world. He said he used to be a Christian but when he was walking down the street in Vegas, God pulled him away and brought him into judgment and then put him back on earth. His said he is now condemned and the Bible is not true. We got into quite a heated debate. He said he used to be an apologist but he must have been a bad one. He was totally closed to the gospel and would not let me explain the cross.

The tattoo man

I talked to a man that had naked women tattooed all over his body and of course he was wearing a cross and proclaimed he was a Christian. I asked what he thought it took to get to heaven and he said to be your true self. All I could think of is that we are all depraved, vile beasts who deserve Hell so if that is all we have to do to get to heaven then we are all in.

The Tramps

TJ and I witnessed to these two tramps, which the name they called themselves. They were just your typical traveler, homeless guys, one young and one old. The old man knew everything, just ask him, but the young Indian kid grew up under the care of a father who was a pastor but he knew nothing. They tried to take us down many rabbit holes but we stuck to the gospel. We talked and looked over Scripture for over a half hour and then a cool thing happened. The Indian kid who could barley even read started reading passages of Scripture. I thought this was glorifying to God because here was a huge wretch that was desperately lost and he was reading the very words of life. Praise God.

The Sikh

I saw a guy with a turban on so I went over and talked with him. He was a Sikh from India. I asked him a lot of questions and just let him dig holes. We talked about the consciousness and what is was and where it came from. We talked about the god inside of you and the point of life and reincarnation and a bunch of other eastern thought. His wife came and pulled him away before we could get into the gospel though. I guess you don’t need to go to India to find a Sikh, they are here too.

The nations are here! But who will go there? How will those in India hear the gospel without a preacher? How will the preacher get there if no one sends him?2011/05/when-providence-knocks.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-323399959607191994Sun, 15 May 2011 14:25:00 +00002011-05-15T08:25:50.360-06:00George MullerWhat are your retiring from?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I have heard of pastors retiring but I am not sure why and from what. I'm still reading George Muller's autobiography and am continually amazed. God used Muller for so much. Not only did God use Muller to pastor a church of 1200 people, start schools that taught over 123,000 students, distributed publications by the millions, support numerous missionaries, to build 5 buildings in his orphanage and care for 10,024 orphans before he died, God also brought in 75 million pounds by prayer only and answered 50,000 requests which 30,000 of them were in the same hour or day that they were asked.

Now this is amazing enough but Muller surprises me yet again. He actually started his overseas mission work at the age of 70. Most people retire and die soon after at this age but no Muller. God, by His grace, allowed Muller and his wife to be missionaries from the age of 70-87. He traveled over 200,000 miles and to 42 countries by boat, horse, foot, wagon and other various means as an elderly man. Some of the countries include: England, Scotland, Ireland, America, all over Europe, Canada, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Russia, Poland, India, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, In his old age in the mission field, he preached 5-6000 times in many languages. Now that is a good retirement. All was possible only by the sustaining grace of God but when you have Godly desires to advance the kingdom of Christ, God provides the grace and means to accomplish them. Retirement should be going to work full time for God.2011/05/what-are-your-retiring.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-9167813057088107192Fri, 13 May 2011 03:32:00 +00002011-05-13T11:54:26.119-06:00witnessingThe advancement of the Kingdom of Christ<div class="separator" style="clear: both; This fire has been kindled lately.

I was traveling down the road and came to the town of Big Timber so I stopped by my friend, John Wallace's church/coffee shop to visit. It was raining out but I saw two guys standing in the rain smoking so I asked them if they were ever taught to get out of the rain and then gave them a gospel tract and started up a conversation. One grew up Catholic and the other Lutheran and both were lost. We talked about sin and the justice of God. They started getting uncomfortable and justified their sin. They said they were going to take my first point of advice and get out of the rain and into their car away from me. I told them that I never got to tell them the best part. I tried to explain the atonement of Christ on the cross but they had no interest and got into their car. Oh to be surrounded by the gospel and openly reject it. It would be better to have never been born than to know the gospel and reject it.

Oh how I weep for the countless sinners that I talk to that are just like these guys. We would all be the same if it wasn't for the unfathomable grace of God that was given to us. Oh that the grace of God would be poured out like rain on a bunch of Hell deserving sinners like us and the kingdom of Christ be advanced. Brothers, we should be crying out to God for His Kingdom to be advanced for His own glory. We should weep when the name of Christ is not glorified like He deserves. Come Lord Jesus, quickly.2011/05/advancement-of-kingdom-of-christ.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-7471095247988263898Wed, 11 May 2011 03:11:00 +00002011-05-10T21:09:37.039-06:00audiohumorVideoThe Marriage Song - very funny<param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="; There are 5 sets of 10 prayers that are dedicated to praying to Mary and there are 5 beads in between each set of 10 Mary beads that are to be prayed to the Father. So when doing the Rosary, Catholics pray 50 prayers to Mary and 5 prayers to God. The 50 prayers are “Hail Mary” and the 5 are “Our Father”

This un-biblical and blasphemous act of praying to Mary would totally disgust Mary if she ever knew about it, but she doesn't. Mary has never heard a single prayer from anyone because she was a mortal human that sinned and needed to be saved by Jesus Christ and is now in Heaven where she worships her Son like the rest of Heaven. She can't hear a single prayer from anyone, anymore than your dead grandma can't hear your prayer. Praying to dead people is cultic.2011/05/mariology-part-7.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Scott Doherty)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4802310451311998901.post-2385526594237209277Sat, 07 Ma

It has created quite a controversy to the point a group called <a href="; target="_blank">No!Spec (Twitter account <a href="; target="_blank">@nospec) was created.

Recently I stumbled upon an article written by Jeremiah Owyang entitled "<a href="; target="_blank">Designers: Why Spec Work Is Not Going Away – How You Should Respond". Jeremiah's article was simply stating a social media trend. He actually started off his career as a UI designer. However, it wasn't so much his article that had taken me aback, but what had gotten my attention was the lively discussion that ensued at the end of the article. So of course, being a professional interactive manager/designer (one of many hats), I commented the following:

"What’s not reflected in the conversation is the value Experienced Designers bring to the table. It’s not just about a design that’s aesthetically pleasing, but how strategic design can enhance a brand campaign and product positioning, as well as heighten a brand’s perception. Experienced designers are also strategic creative business partners for the brand and their products.

Spec work may be a venue/channel for a new designer just starting out in the field. I believe there are other options out there, but it takes time to build. I think they need to consider the time they spent vying after spec work vs. creating and building up their personal brand from scratch, i.e., portfolio sites, WOM marketing, etc."

This whole topic spurred me to ask a question on LinkedIn in the 2 design groups I belong to, AIGA and ADCNJ. I wrote 'Do you think "crowdsourcing" devalues designers and design in general?' I wrote a brief description then added, 'I'm curious to hear your thoughts about this issue and what you would recommend as other alternatives for designers.'

The intent of the post was to draw out recommendations and alternatives from other designers. Besides committing to not follow this trend, we all need to find a solution and become proactive in our own personal branding. Here are some ideas that were listed:

Non-profit organizations for designers just getting their foot in the door

Get involved with your city's Chamber of Commerce

Cold calls

Referrals (this should include friends, family, colleagues and old acquaintances)

I haven't heard of too many people having luck with these, but it's possible: Elance, Guru, Odesk, iFreelance, RentaCoder, etc.

"The Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market" (book listings)

Craigslist

Branding/Identity/Marketing yourself

Advertise

Find design firms that have overflow work that can use your assistance

Join communities like <a href="; target="_blank">No!Spec (Twitter account <a href=";>@nospec)

Then a fellow designer posted just a link with no comments to this video, which I have to say, really made my day. (Thanks <a href="; target="_blank">@kenlange! :D)

<param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="340" width="560">

I'll continue to follow this hotly debated topic and may update the list above from comments provided. What could we do collectively and what could we do for our own personal branding and WOM marketing?

Recent Comments
<script type="text/javascript" src=" href=" by Disqus2009/07/crowdsourcing-will-continue-to-be-hotly.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (2cre8)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6071853390821708136.post-5485511913234148832Sat, 25 Jul 2009 00:59:00 +00002009-07-28T17:21:04.448-04:00arthritisbloggerinspirationalwinnerA Woman's Story: Growing Up To Be a "Winner"<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 198px; height: 255px;" src="; border="0" alt="Melinda Winner" title="Melinda Winner" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363007703961871042" />I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to an amazingly determined woman, Melinda Winner. She is about to embark on a journey across the United States to raise awareness about the crippling effects of arthritis to children and adults alike. Melinda herself suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), fibromyalgia, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), osteoarthritis, and degenerative disk disease. The National Arthritis Foundation Western PA chapter, <a href="; target="_blank">Creeky Joints, and Melinda's Web site will also be following and posting photos and stories about Melinda’s journey across the United States. While on her journey Melinda will be speaking at events, hosting cooking demonstrations for the physically challenged, speaking with the media in the form of television, print and radio. Melinda has recently completed her first radio/podcast spot that will air on Monday, July 27, 2009. You can listen by <a href="; target="_blank">clicking here or download from iTunes by going to arthritis radio. She is also a <a href="; target="_blank">featured guest blogger for Arthritis Foundation Western PA chapter.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 60px;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363004376821223362" />

Melinda's Story
Melinda came into this world 47 years ago not breathing. When revived, it was quickly realized she had a serious birth injury that could not be repaired. Being born to a diabetic mother, Melinda weighed in at 12.6 at birth. She had extensive nerve damage and deformity to her right arm. At age 26, she began experiencing traveling pain. Melinda was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. It did not stop there. A few years passed and she was diagnosed with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), also called complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis. She faught a personal battle gaining then losing over 100 pounds and keeping it off, all the while enduring pain that is unbearable and still embracing life. She continues her life mission to help others not only survive this disease but live a productive life filled with hope, happiness and joy! Melinda believes in her plight so much that she has branded herself. She had a tattoo placed on her back at the jean line that states she is “On A Mission”. When asked about the reason for the placement of her tattoo, she laughs, “Men are always looking at my backside when they shouldn’t be, so what better place to get my message across? When people ask me what “on a mission” means, I tell my story of hope for others.”

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 170px; height: 240px;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363033348564022306" />No, the story does not end here. About four years ago, Melinda was watching the constant news reports about Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast. Everyone she spoke with had well wishes for the victims of the storm but not many actually got involved. Melinda did. Not only did she give up her holiday to visit the ravished coast, she moved her entire family there to help with the rebuilding the only way she knew how…through food. She prepared gourmet meals for the out of town workers complete with an entrée, fresh baked breads or rolls, cakes, pies and strudels made from scratch and a drink or two, then delivered to their job sites. Melinda also helped in the rebuilding of a playground, cleaned streets, volunteered at the Red Cross in the shelter, and attended the public speaker workshop at Camp Mash in Alabama. She became an Ambassador for the National Arthritis Foundation for her Congressional District. Melinda befriended strangers in need, helped with painting, paperwork, cooking and was a much needed friend to those in need. She allowed a homeless man to move in with her family until he could get back on his feet. To the residents Melinda proudly earned the name “The Cake Lady”. She not only cooked for neighbors, but baked daily and shared. All this with pain levels exceeding level 8 each and everyday.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 228px;" src="; border="0" alt="Food Network '2008 Ultimate Recipe Showdown'" title="Food Network '2008 Ultimate Recipe Showdown'"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362989119213849554" />Where she is today
Melinda has followed her dreams all the way to the Food Network. She competed on the Ultimate Recipe Showdown in 2008. She has also authored two books: The first, Yankee Cooking with Southern Charm was released in 2008.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0pt 10pt 10px 10px; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 314px;" src="; alt="Cooking With Arthritis" title="Cooking With Arthritis" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362983958004472674" border="0" />The Second, A Complete Illustrated Guide to Cooking with Arthritis*, is scheduled to be released in September of this year. The second book is the first of its kind. This book was designed to help the physically challenged regain their independence in the kitchen. The color step by step photos and delectable recipes take the reader on a culinary journey around the world pain free and fearless. The target market for her latest release is suffers of chronic pain, arthritis (all 100 + forms), people with injuries (may it be temporary or permanent), disabled and people who simply enjoy food and cooking. Melinda will take her book on her journey across the US, in hopes of offering a bright beacon of light to the sufferers of disability, young and old alike.

*Book is being offered at $22.99. Majority of the comments specific to web media banner ads say they're typically ignored. I agree...if it's not relevant, however creative, it will get a 1/2 a second glance. So it begs the question—should we continue to put our advertising dollars towards this media?

Of the ads you see in a typical day, how many engage your attention?<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 211px;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357446638735447186" />

Innovative advertising systems
Forbes.com recently published an article about how big brands are fearful of placing ads on social sites that will appear next to offensive and inappropriate content. Facebook, using a novel ad delivery systems called RockYou, assured giant marketers such as General Motors, VW and The Gap that this would not happen and has seemingly squelched that fear.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 193px;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357452992607995458" />But we need to go beyond that. Take it a step further and allow consumers an option of what type of ads they want to see and how many. Keep it open-ended so they can change their selections at any time. Let your consumers choose if they want to see ads even down to a local level. It's all about empowering your audience and giving them choices.

Creative engagement
Beside strategic ad placement—content and how content is delivered is key. Flash banners are only as good as the design and content. But where's the creativity and interactivity? Create something wildly different. Pose an interesting question with a fun, interactive component. Challenge them, pique their curiosity. Allow users to vote, comment or share the ad. Include a random drawing to engage your audience even further. Just create a unique feature that stands out from the traditional banner ads. <a href="; target="_blank">Pringles created a small, square banner ad that makes you want to consistently click on it...where it goes, I don't know. But it's definitely unique.

Post engagement
Now that you've converted your audience to followers, don't stop there. Several companies are rewarding their followers like Klymit, who rewards their Facebook followers with special discounts and early access to products. Starbucks recently offered Facebook fans 280,000 pints of ice cream where users can redeem a coupon or send one to anyone in their network. Crate & Barrel sent out a Crate & Barrel Product Review "A penny for your thoughts could win $1000 for your home" e-mail to current registrants for a chance to win a randomly-selected $1,000 shopping spree by posting comments on previously purchased items.

Take away
The opportunities are endless. Remember, it's all about your customers. Think creatively. Think interactively. Once you build traction, don't forget to empower and reward your loyal followers. And for social sites developing an ad delivery system, it's not just about contextually relevant placement, but also about empowering your audience and giving them choices.

Please feel free to share and add your own comments about this topic. Are there other examples you can think of?
2009/07/thinking-creatively-banner.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (2cre8)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6071853390821708136.post-3143412051237893317Fri, 10 Jul 2009 01:50:00 +00002009-07-14T17:55:12.450-04:00blogsradiosubject matter expertstrendsBlogger AM Radio: Turn Up The Volume!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 226px;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356792419857684674" />I've been reading some of the most informative and well-written blogs aimed to truly motivate and educate the mass population out there in the blogsphere. Having an affinity for social media trends, technology and marketing, it dawned on me that it would be truly monumental to actually hear these wonderful and informative bloggers live on AM radio. Sure there's the SIRIUS Blog Radio, but not all of us have (or want) to pay for satellite radio. There's also the popular <a href="; site with an average of 680K+ unique visitors every month. No, I'm talking about a syndicated broadcast on AM radio where I can listen without having to search online or wait for a podcast.

Imagine being able to hear "subject matter experts (sme)" such as Chris Brogan, Jeremiah Owyang, Seth Godin, the G-man or Guy Kawasaki? I'm a firm believer that the quality of engagement is sometimes a lot more important than quantity. I would encourage social media and community networks to "listen" to your audience and apply some basic user-experience fundamentals:

Registration
Why ask for everything upfront? You risk losing a potential customer and avid follower.

Implement an Open ID platform instead...just the basics...e-mail address as the user name and a password that has already been established with other community/social sites. You've made it so simple to register and that much faster to now engage a new follower.

Facebook and LinkedIn allows you to complete your full profile at your leisure. Sites that require a birth date upfront really is annoying. Sites that make it optional, even partially filled, is much more empowering to the user. Even better is choosing what information I want made public. MySpace offered that option but it was very difficult to find.

User Interface
This is a critical factor. Even more so when you have a complex architecture with lots of features. Simplicity is the key word here. There are some community sites whose pages are sooo busy and confusing, I rarely go back to visit. Here are other issues that come immediately to mind:

Branding - Do you really need a massive logo or header that explains the site on every single page? Once a value proposition was explained in the pre-registration process, the meat of your site should be all about engaging your users with your brand. The design, functions and features should also resonate your brand hallmarks. If your brand claim is innovation, then show some feature, content or functionality that's innovate. You can currently find one of his films, "Screw Cupid," on Sundance, IFC and Amazon. We talk about everything from writing about dirty cops to surviving working at an agency to directing an independent feature. SANJEEV SIRPAL'S BIO Sanjeev Sirpal, like 90 percent of all first generation Indian-Americans, was born near Chicago, IL and was immediately accepted into med-school. The details of his upbringing in sunny South Florida are captivating and poetic and were adapted into a series of successful films starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Since watching Back To The Future at an early age, Sanjeev always knew that he wanted to make movies, and drive a Delorean, and he has been obsessed with them (movies that is, Deloreans turn like they're underwater) ever since. He cannot ever remember where he parked but he can quote Spaceballs from start to finish. He broke up with a girlfriend on-site because she told him she didn't like The Matrix. The only movie he has ever cried at was Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. For some reason, when the ant was killed he lost it. It is still a touchy subject. Sanjeev can discuss Roland Barthe's Third Meaning as it relates to cinema at length and at the same time, will always think that the word "poop" is funny. After graduating from the University of Florida with a degree in literary journalism and a minor in disappointing his parents, Sanjeev took a job with the Associated Press covering the Cops and Courts beat for the Southeast (lots and lots of meth labs). Sanjeev figured he had two choices: Go on a cross-country series of daring adventures, righting wrongs and capturing the hearts of women everywhere, or move to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of becoming a writer. Due to his aversion to planning and a small bladder, he chose the latter. Sanjeev's first film, SCREW CUPID, a romantic comedy Steve Persall of the St. Petersburg Times called "crisply written and full of wit," and ReelTalk dubbed "a winner," was made for less than Chris Evans' codpiece budget for THE AVENGERS and screened at the Delray Beach International Film Festival (AUDIENCE AWARD - BEST FEATURE), Florida Film Festival, Sunscreen Film Festival, and Seattle International Film Festival before being purchased by the Sundance Channel and IFC. When he's not writing, Sanjeev enjoys revising his bio and elaborately setting up carefully controlled, extreme backgrounds to make his profile pictures look badass. In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with writer/director Sanjeev Sirpal ("Screw Cupid," "iHeart," "Lovepocalypse,"). Whether you like the basic california rolls, the more savory philadelphia rolls, or traditional Japanese sashimi, this day is for you. I particularly liked where my friends and I sat, a big booth next to the window where we all had plenty of space.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1112" data-original-width="1600" height="277" src="; width="400" />

Wings: spicy (left), pickled radish (middle) and soy garlic (right)

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="; width="150" />

Scott and Anthony

My friends and I decided to share two orders of 30 piece wings. The wings come in two flavors, soy garlic and spicy, and are served with a side of pickled radish. It's cool that you can customize the wing order - any combination that you like ranging from half and half to only soy garlic or spicy. We selected 25 soy garlic and 5 spicy wings.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1598" data-original-width="1600" height="319" src="; width="320" />

The soy garlic wings tasted incredibly savory. We liked how the wings were distinctively crispy on the outside, which gave it a slight crunch when you bit into it. The wings have just the right amount of sauce glazed on the skin; it's a goldilocks state where it does not feel like the wings are too saucy nor barely tasty due to a lack of sauce. Simply put, these large wings were an exceptional entree for any chicken wing connoisseur.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="; width="320" />
The spicy wings are definitely a stark contrast to the soy garlic wings; these wings are on the complete opposite spectrum of the tangy soy garlic wings. Although the texture is the same as the aforementioned soy wings, these wings are packing heat. There is a delay between when you taste the zesty flavor and hotness after taking the initial bite. I tried two of these wings one right after the other and seriously underestimated the overall heat when it hit me. I'm not the biggest fan of hot wings, as I prefer either mild or sweet, but they are differently worth trying if you're up for the challenge.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1203" height="400" src="; width="300" />

Friends and I sitting in one of Bonchon's big booths

Overall, my friends and I were stuffed after eating a total of 60 delectable wings. Although pricey at a total bill of approximately $17 per person, I thought it was a fun experience with my friends that I would try again and recommend to other groups alike.

- Thomas Regnante2018/01/bonchon-chicken-ellicott-city-maryland.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456632305312289687.post-5629881998637626513Wed, 20 Dec 2017 03:45:00 +00002017-12-20T05:27:47.066-08:002 Dudes Who Love FoodCharles RegnantecheeseburgerColumbia MallGrassrootsGrassroots Crisis Intervention CenterhamburgerShake Shack ColumbiaShake ShakeThe Mall in ColumbiaThomas RegnanteShake Shack - Columbia, Maryland
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="; width="480" />

Today, I was invited to a complimentary preview meal at <a href="; style="color: red;">Shake Shack, the newest restaurant at the Mall in Columbia. Located in the corner space formerly occupied by Champs, Shake Shack officially opens on Wednesday, December 20 at 11 a.m.

The American eatery, known for its burgers and shakes, held this private event to introduce their menu to the community and as a fundraiser for Howard County's <a href="; style="color: orange; text-align: start;">Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center: a nonprofit organization that provides crisis and suicide intervention programs and shelter and assistance for the homeless.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1189" height="400" src="; width="295" />

I met Grassroots board members
Wanda King (middle) and Carol Ann Smith (right)

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="150" src="; width="200" />

festive holiday lights above the ordering station

Shake Shack started in New York City as a Madison Square Park hot dog cart. As news spread about the cart, its popularity grew. In 2004, the company opened a permanent kiosk in the park and continued to expand its presence and menu. Today, there are over 150 restaurants worldwide - including the Columbia location.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="; width="240" />

The first thing that caught my eye when I walked into the Columbia store was the clean, industrial feel. With its high ceilings, stainless steel signage and floor to ceiling windows, the restaurant has a hip and modern vibe.

Visitors can view the menu on oversized menu boards located perpendicular to the order counter. Expect to find traditional burger joint items - five burger choices including a vegetarian option (portobello mushroom), a chicken sandwich, three hot dog choices and an array of shakes and frozen custards treats.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="; width="320" />

High ceiling and open space

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="; width="320" />

I ordered the ShackStack burger (cheeseburger and a ’shroom burger topped with lettuce, tomato, and shacksauce), crinkle cut french fries, and the salted caramel milkshake.

My mom ordered a ShackBurger (cheeseburger topped with tomato, lettuce, and shacksauce) and the Pie Oh My (vanilla custard atop a seasonal pie).

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="; width="240" />

Shack Stack

The Shack Stackburger is a combo of the 'shroom burger (a crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with melted muenster and cheddar cheeses) and a cheeseburger.

This burger has a lot going on. You can see from the picture how the cheese oozes on the patty and, when in tandem with the melted cheese from the portobello mushroom, provides a distinct gooey ecstasy of flavor that we all crave in our cheeseburgers. Even though the burger was a little messy due to the cheeses (the wrapping helped assuage this), rest assured that this burger is not greasy.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="; width="300" />

ShackBurger

My mother ordered the restaurant's staple item - the ShackBurger (but without cheese). It is similar to the Shack Stack except less ingredients. This is a classic. The simple taste of 100% all natural angus beef patty with salt, pepper and shack sauce (a mix of pickle brine, tomato, and mayo that is similar to a chipotle mayo) is perfection. The shack sauce makes this burger for me.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="; width="240" />

Fries

The fries were a hit with me and mom. Moderately salted, incredibly soft on the inside with a slight (cannot stress how minute this is) crisp on the exterior, and cooked to golden brown. Best part, I can taste the natural potato flavor and not grease. These are the true epitome of fantastic fries; I might even come back just for fries.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="; width="240" />

Apple Pie Oh My with custard

The Pie Oh My dessert, a seasonal pie topped with vanilla custard, was suggested by the cashier. My mom loves apple pie but was not crazy about this one. It was way more dough than apple by a 3:1 ratio. To make matters worse, the dough was hard to break with a spoon. The custard, likewise, was thick but not heavy on the vanilla flavor.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="; width="240" />

Salted caramel shake

The salted caramel shake was a knockout with me and my mom. The flavor was intense, equal parts salty and caramel with hints of other spices that we couldn't figure out, but just made it fantastic.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="; width="240" />

Me with Shack Shack area director Jon Parsonnet

Shake Shack is a great addition to the Howard County restaurant scene.
