CBC, Netflix and APTN greenlight new Arctic comedy series
Inuit co-creators Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril are set to executive produce with Miranda de Pencier
Netflix, CBC and APTN have announced they are commissioning a new untitled comedy series that will film in Nunavut (UNTITLED ARCTIC COMEDY).
The show was created and will be written by Inuit film and television writer and producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Inuit filmmaker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril.
Logline: A young Inuk mother wants to build a new future for herself, but it won’t be easy in her small Arctic town where everyone knows your business.

Three Cities, 20+ Acts, One Great Gathering: 2019 APTN Indigenous Day Live Lineup Announced
May 16, 2019, Winnipeg, MB – On June 22, Turtle Island will rock across the nation as well-known artists and new emerging talent unite to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day at APTN Indigenous Day Live (IDL). Live and on location from Winnipeg, Whitehorse and, for the very first time, Calgary, IDL will showcase solo and collaborative performances on one spectacular night, demonstrating how Indigenous culture and identity is thriving.

APTN Scholarship Program
APTN is committed to the development of Indigenous professionals across Canada. Our Scholarship Program is intended to provide support to First Nation, Inuit, and Metis students in a course of studies leading to full time employment.
Eligibility Criteria:
You are a First Nation, Inuit, or Metis permanent resident of Canada;
You are enrolled or accepted in a minimum 2 year, full time program with an accredited Canadian educational institute;
You will have maintained a minimum overall average of 65% or above and provide a transcript of grades;
Applicants cannot be employed by APTN, be a Board member, or the family of an APTN employee or Board member;
You are actively involved in the Indigenous community.
Scholarship Guidelines:
Three scholarships valued at $2,000 each will be awarded to one First Nations student, one Inuit student and one Metis student. This award may be applied to academic and/or living costs. Upon successfully meeting the eligibility criteria and completing the application, finalists will be required to participate in an informal interview as part of the final selection process.

A copy of your recent resume;
A copy of your recent transcripts;
Proof you are enrolled or accepted in a minimum 2 year, full time program with an accredited Canadian educational institute;
Two letters of recommendation from previous instructors or employers. Reference letters should include the name, address and phone number of the person providing the reference (references cannot be members of your immediate family (i.e.: parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, or grandparents) ;
A brief one page essay outlining your career goals, why you want to work in your area of study, how this scholarship will help you achieve your career goals, how you feel you can affect your community through your area of study, how you are actively involved in your community and any other information you feel is relevant to this application.

March 14, 2019, Toronto, Ont. – Scoring a milestone for Canadian television history, Sportsnet and APTN are teaming up to deliver the first-ever NHL game in Plains Cree. The historic broadcast hits airwaves on Sunday, March 24, as the Montreal Canadiens meet the Carolina Hurricanes on Rogers Hometown Hockey in Cree on APTN at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
Leveraging Sportsnet’s production, APTN – the first national Indigenous broadcaster in the world – will air the landmark program featuring exclusive Cree-language commentary and analysis for fans across the country. Broadcaster Clarence Iron will have the play-by-play call for APTN, while Juno Award-winning musician Earl Wood will host the studio show alongside game analyst and NHL alum, John Chabot.

Set to deliver must-see NHL action to tens of thousands of Cree-speaking Canadians, the historic broadcast on APTN fittingly complements that weekend’s Rogers Hometown Hockey stop in Enoch Cree Nation, Alta., where Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will host a live broadcast of the same game on Sportsnet. Enoch Cree Nation is a proud First Nation situated in Treaty No. 6 Territory in central Alberta, bordering the west side of Edmonton.

Clarence Iron lives in Pinehouse, Sask., where he works at CFNK 89.9 FM as a program host in his native Plains Cree language. With his experience calling Indigenous hockey tournaments as well as local games, Iron is recognized within the Indigenous hockey community as one of the “Cree Voices of Hockey.”
Drafted 40th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 1980, John Chabot spent eight seasons in the NHL and played more than 500 games with Montreal, Pittsburgh and Detroit, followed by another 11 seasons in Europe. Following his playing career, Chabot went on to coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League before spending two seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders from 2007-2009. Chabot also worked as a studio analyst on the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games with APTN and as a coach/instructor on APTN’s hockey series, Hit the Ice.
A survivor of residential school and the Sixties Scoop, Earl Wood hails from Saddle Lake, Alta., and is one of the original founders of the Northern Cree Singers. Referred to by some as the “Indigenous Rolling Stones,” the Northern Cree Singers are a Juno Award-winning group and have been nominated for six Grammy Awards.
In addition to delivering Canada’s first Cree-language NHL broadcast this March, Sportsnet also contributes to the national productions of Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition and Blue Jays: Pinoy Edition on OMNI Television. Sportsnet’s sister station, OMNI Television, offers a wide range of locally produced and acquired programming in more than 20 languages, including news, current affairs and entertainment content.
This partnership will bring sports back to APTN, an initiative that has seen great success in recent years. APTN’S CAUTION: May Contain Nuts immerses fans in popular show with launch of VR comedy sketches
The first of its kind for APTN, CAUTION’s production team is using 360-degree film technology to immerse viewers in six new sketches.
March 1, 2019, Edmonton, Alta. – With the launch of season five of APTN’s CAUTION: May Contain Nuts comes an exciting experience for fans: six new virtual reality sketches featuring well-known characters and worlds from the popular sketch comedy series. Kooky characters will interact with fans directly, making them feel like they’re part of the show. As audiences lose themselves in these sketches, they’ll be introduced to a clown family, pirates living in a shopping mall, the crew of a futuristic spaceship and much more.
“It was important to all of us that the sketches were specially created to take full advantage of the 360-degree VR experience,” says show producer, Camille Beaudoin. “The viewers aren’t just watching, they actually become a character in the sketch and the action happens to them and all around them. It’s truly immersive.”
Dylan Pearce, an experienced 3D VR director, worked with the production company Mosaic Entertainment and CAUTION’s talented writing team to create this interactive experience for fans.
Three of the VR sketches will be exclusively available on aptn.ca/vr, giving fans with VR goggles a special 3D experience. Don’t have VR goggles? APTN and select Indigenous radio stations are distributing VR goggles to fans. Starting Friday, March 8, check aptn.ca/vr to learn more.

ABORIGINAL PEOPLES TELEVISION NETWORK SEEKS PUBLIC SUPPORT
FOR LICENCE RENEWAL PROCESS
October 23, 2017, Winnipeg, Manitoba – Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has submitted an application to renew its broadcasting licence to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The CRTC governs the conditions and terms by which APTN operates to provide programming to the Canadian audience. The licence renewal process is open to the public and everyone is invited to participate by submitting letters to the Commission.
Since 2013, APTN has received a fee of 31 cents per Canadian subscriber through monthly subscription fees. This has fueled a nationwide network of Aboriginal producers, writers, directors, actors, broadcast professionals and Aboriginal news teams in every province and territory. In 2015, APTN was called upon by the TRC to support reconciliation through the continuation of our leadership in programming and organizational culture.
We call upon the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, as an independent non-profit broadcaster with programming by, for, and about Aboriginal Peoples, to support reconciliation, including but not limited to:
i. Continuing to provide leadership in programming and organizational culture that reflects the diverse cultures, languages, and perspectives of Aboriginal peoples.
ii. Continuing to develop media initiatives that inform and educate the Canadian public and connect Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians.

It is no secret, the portrayal and representation of Aboriginal Peoples in Canadian television is meagre. APTN is the only Canadian network that stands out as the exception to this reality. The network is a window into the profound diversity of their cultures, lives and languages. APTN is diligent in giving Aboriginal Peoples the opportunity to hear and see themselves on the screen, and that Canadians as a whole can access meaningful, informative and non-stereotypical programming. Also, news stories that other broadcasters are not covering that reflect Aboriginal cultures and perspectives.
APTN is requesting a modest increase to their wholesale fee for the next term, so as to continue their service to Aboriginal audiences, sustain a strong and talented
Aboriginal production industry and grow opportunities to better serve the needs of Aboriginal communities through a comprehensive strategic plan. The network does not receive government funding for operations but generates revenue through subscriber fees, advertising sales and strategic partnerships.
The network proposes to meet substantially the same conditions of licence as currently apply to their service with some adjustments to the conditions of licence providing for greater flexibility. — An Aboriginal Day Live Community Collaboration —
June 6, 2017, Winnipeg, Manitoba – Aboriginal Day Live links all Canadians to celebrate opportunities and learn more about First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples. It showcases the unparalleled talent that is woven into the mosaic of this country, and the experience starts right when you set foot on the grounds.
All eight host cities will offer free daytime activities – and each will be as unique as the culture and Peoples of the region.
The cities will be united, despite the distance, through significant traditions. One will be the round dance or drum dance, which vary from community to community. Originally, a healing dance — it has also become known as a social dance in the form of a celebration. Participants join hands to create a large circle, as a symbol of equality, moving to their left with a side-shuffle step following the drumbeat, bending their knees to highlight the formation.
We invite everyone to join hands, follow the beating of the drum and enjoy the beauty of the song. At noon – central time – all are invited to gather in a show of solidarity in the largest round dance Canada has ever seen. It will be unlike something you’ve experienced before, join one of the gatherings on location on June 21.
