He didn't know it yet, but the worst wasn't over. Two years later, while he was on tour overseas, his house caught fire. Two of his three young sons never made it out. Most people would have disappeared. Roy didn't. He kept touring. He kept writing when he could. Slowly, painfully, he turned his grief into some of the most haunting music ever recorded. Two decades later, at 52, Roy Orbison passed away from a heart attack — just weeks after finishing what would become his final album, "Mystery Girl." It was released after his death, and it became one of the most celebrated comebacks in music history. Roy Orbison never got to see how far his music would reach. But he kept going anyway — through unimaginable loss, one song at a time. Sometimes the most powerful thing a person can do with their grief is simply refuse to let it have the last word.

He said no. Then he said something braver. “I would just say cricket has a culture that is associated with alcohol… that hasn’t changed.” He’s right. And I’m not the man to give the sermon. Some of the best hours of my life were spent on a dressing room bench in sweaty whites, beer in hand, singing Under the Southern Cross I Stand with men I’d just fought beside. There is nothing in my professional life I’d trade for those nights. But here’s what I can’t reconcile. We have professionalised everything else. The diets. The fielding drills. The analytics. The sleep science. The pay cheques. Every single thing in our game is now measured, tracked and optimised. The beer has stayed exactly where it was in 1980. And we’re hypocrites about it. When a team is losing, the first question asked by media, by boards, by fans, by coaches, is about the drinking culture. Every failing team gets an alcohol audit. When that same team wins, we film them spraying champagne. We broadcast the shoey. We run the dressing room footage as the emotional climax of the highlights package. Same behaviour. Different scoreboard. After 35 years in change rooms, here’s what I know: for most of the men I shared them with, it was never really about the alcohol. It was about permission. Permission to stop performing. To stop being watched. To be an ordinary bloke among ordinary blokes for a couple of hours. That need is real. You don’t legislate it away with a curfew. Tobacco didn’t leave cricket because cricket had a moral awakening. Society had one, the law changed, and the game followed along behind. We were a passenger, not the driver. Which makes me wonder whether Stokes has it slightly wrong. In India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, alcohol isn’t part of the cricket culture, because it isn’t as much a part of daily life there. So maybe it was never a cricket culture at all. Maybe our change rooms have only ever been a mirror of the societies outside them. What do you think? Akshobh Giridharadas shared thisI started the early part of my career in sports journalism, and yet in 2022, a moment of serendipity led me to Lusail, Qatar to watch what was arguably the greatest game of not just the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, but perhaps all time. I remember penning this article from Doha, Qatar before the final, long before Lionel Messi had touched the crown jewel. There has been much to critique and castigate the La Albiceleste (Argentina) side this FIFA World Cup, with "ugly side of the beautiful game on display" and controversial refereeing decisions surrounding the game against Egypt - billed as a contest between the Footballing God and the Egyptian Pharaoh in Mo Salah. After Argentina's phenomenal comeback today against arch-rivals, the Three Lions, and political messaging surrounding " Las Malvinas/Falklands, revisiting this op-ed I penned four years ago, touching on the sacrosanctity of the global game and what it means to Messi, before the final. Now that Lionel Messi has another date with destiny, with the chance to become the first side to defend the title since Brazil (1958-1962), this excerpt echoes. "The World Cup is truly a cosmopolitan carnival, a celebration of globalisation, at a time of caustic and flagrant nationalism. George Orwell wasn’t entirely wrong when he said, “sport was war minus the shooting”. Diego Maradona’s Hand of God in 1986 versus England was devilish, and his second goal, heavenly divine, after the animosity of the Falkland War that aggravated Anglo-Argentine relations. Argentina, a country riddled with economic morass and political quagmire, now sees itself back at the top of footballing echelons. With one pope and two gods (Maradona and Messi), the latter has the chance, that chance that has long eluded him. He looks like the boy next door, but he is far from that, with extra-terrestrial-like speed and prowess. Like an astronaut, only he can traverse that space and find the metaphorical space through opposition defences. He is as short as David and a Goliath, as a giant among men. The Argentine sun on the flag and Maradona in the sky will watch the ‘star’ on the ground, on December 18. It’s the only time a sentence in the English language that reads, ‘Football is Messi’ means it’s beautiful. The ball is at Messi’s feet, like a magician; only he knows the secrets; the tricks are visible to all, perhaps not to those who are marking him; they’ve already lost the ball. Akshobh Giridharadas shared thisA team that captures global hearts on the world's biggest stage would normally be an underdog side or a team from the Global South. Norway, both geographically and economically, is far from any form of "South", with one of the highest standards of living and ranks at the very top of the OECD Better Life Index, frequently placing 1st overall for having the highest living standards. Not quite underdogs but far from World Cup favorites too, despite having the world's best striker in Erling Haaland (on normal days, whom I normally despise and fear as the prime antagonist when he plays against my beloved Arsenal Football Club and adopts the role of arch-nemesis). But also ably shepherded by the talismanic skipper, Martin Odegaard, who captained Arsenal to a Premier League Win. The juxtaposition of these two could not be more glaring: Premier League rivals, but Haaland epitomizes Viking fury on his face, while Odegaard is the smiling baby-face assassin. Right from the pre-World Cup shoot, as the Nordic side adopted their roots and came out with a creative Viking photo shoot, to seeing ululating Norwegian fans in stadia, and across North America, Norway, and even the parliament, and saw them "Rō" (row in Viking style) in synchronicity; this Norwegian side captured hearts and minds. He profoundly speaks about growing up in the suburbs of Paris. The first line by the talismanic striker tells it all. “I grew up in the suburbs of Paris not Paris. They’re not the same thing”. For a city that defined and was defined by the phrase, concept and class of “bourgeois”, this is a phenomenal story of the suburbs or the banlieues, far from the grandiose arrondissements of one of the greatest cities of the world. There are 54 players in this #FIFAWorldCup from the suburbs of Paris. Yes, France only has a squad of 26, the rest are from Algeria , Senegal , CoteDIvoire , Morocco , Congo, Haiti and more. It’s a remarkable story of how France in 1998 and 2018, both World Cup wins, but different make up of the squads. As Theirry says, it doesn’t matter which country they represent, they represent a diverse community from one set of places. Akshobh Giridharadas liked thisAkshobh Giridharadas liked thisIt’s a moment of reflection for me and many others who have been involved in US-China relations for a long time. This week on Tuesday, C. H. Tung passed away at 89 in Hong Kong after a long illness. Hong Kong has lost an important figure in its history and I have lost a friend of many years. CH, as he was commonly referenced by friends in the United States, was the first Chief Executive of Hong Kong, serving from the 1997 handover until 2005. He governed through the Asian financial crisis and SARS. His public record was complex, as it is for any leader who held office in such a period. I first met him in 1996, the year before he took office. It was shortly after he became Chief Executive, however, at his urging, that Hank Greenberg, then Chairman and CEO of AIG, and I helped bring the US–Hong Kong Business Council to the US Chamber. CH understood that Hong Kong's future depended on more than sound government at home. It depended on the world staying invested in Hong Kong's success. That began a relationship that lasted for decades. For long stretches we spoke almost monthly about Hong Kong, China and the United States. He was a Chinese patriot, to be sure. He was also a genuinely decent man, and I had a great deal of affection for him. I was not alone; he had many political and business friends in the US. After leaving office he founded the China-United States Exchange Foundation and spent the rest of his life dedicated to the U.S.-China relationship. He came to America again and again, meeting quietly with political and business leaders, and pressing both sides to be constructively engaged and committed to dialogue, even in difficult times. Even as tensions rose at times over the years, he never gave in to fatalism. He argued that disagreement made talking more necessary, not less. Most of that work happened away from public view, in private conversations meant to keep doors open and prevent the relationship from hardening into permanent confrontation. In 2014, he founded Our Hong Kong Foundation, turning the same energy toward Hong Kong's own long-term development. I will remember CH not for the offices he held but for his persistence and his belief in engagement. A complicated figure, and a very important one in my life. I will miss our conversations, his counsel and, above all, his friendship.

Being part of conversations with senior leaders from across the energy ecosystem was a great experience, particularly as the discussions went well beyond adding clean energy capacity. Energy security, industrial competitiveness, AI-driven power demand, grid resilience, cleantech supply chains, nuclear and the role of capital were all central to the discussion. One takeaway stayed with me: India has demonstrated its ability to scale. The next chapter is about building the infrastructure, markets and capital needed to scale even further. Akshobh Giridharadas liked thisThe World Bank Group (WBG) released its 2026 World Development Report on the "Promise of Artificial Intelligence". It is striking to think about all the upside associated with the technology when this has been a summer of so many downsides - from safety worries to pushback on data centers. It was a privilege to be on the Academic Advisory Committee for this report and I am proud of the team led by Gaurav Nayyar that put together this timely and powerful document. It was gratifying to see the idea of "small AI" make its way in it. Most recently, the phenomenal Zach Braiker who has a special talent for making friends brought together a wonderful and erudite group to discuss: the report and its wider implications, small AI, and my ideas about The Ferrari and the Dirt Road. AI is the Ferrari that we obsess with (is Fable 5.1 better than GPT6-Astra?) and the Dirt Road is surface on which the Ferrari is supposed to run -- the context, the organization, the governance, the infrastructure and society, the stewardship of capital, etc. - and and we seem to not spend much time or money on it at all.
