WordCamp Asia 2027 will take place from 9–11 April 2027 in Penang, Malaysia, at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC), just a short drive from historic George Town.
Ahead of the event, a group of organizers travelled to Penang for a site visit. In this post, we want to share what the venue looks like and give you a glimpse into how planning is coming along.
The Venue: Penang Waterfront Convention Centre
PWCC is a new convention centre located within The Light City. It is roughly a 30-minute drive from Penang International Airport and about 10 minutes from George Town, making it easy to reach from both the airport and the city.
Parts of the building were still under construction during our visit, but the scale and quality of the space were already clear.
The first thing that struck us was the sheer size of the main hall and how high the ceilings are. With few columns obstructing the space, there is a lot of flexibility in how we lay out session stages and the sponsor area. The air conditioning was excellent too — a real consideration in a tropical climate.
The team walked the floor together, talking through the practical questions: where the stage should go, how attendees will move between rooms, how the sponsor booths should be arranged.
The foyer surrounding the hall is spacious and inviting — exactly the kind of place where breaks, chance encounters and “hallway track” conversations happen.
Alongside the main hall, we reviewed the meeting rooms available for workshops and smaller sessions. Having rooms of different sizes gives us room to broaden the programme.
A Waterfront Location
One of the real strengths of PWCC is where it sits. The sea is right beside the venue, with the Penang Bridge visible across the water.
Step outside during a break and this is what greets you. It is rare to find a convention venue that feels this open — very much a Penang thing.
Tasting the Catering
Beyond the walkthrough, we also sat down for a catering tasting.
A spread of Malaysian dishes was served, and the team worked through them together. We want attendees to taste what makes Penang special, but people come with a wide range of dietary needs. Striking the balance between distinctly Malaysian food and options everyone can eat with confidence is something we will keep working on.
Time Together as a Team
The group came together from Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Thailand, Japan and the US. The team has only been working together for about a month, so getting to walk the same space and talk in person — after meeting only online — was a big step forward.
We also spent time in George Town scouting possible spots for the welcome party and side events.
Walking the venue matters, of course. But so does simply being in the same place and talking things through — that is a real part of how an event like this comes together.
About Penang
George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Rows of colourful shophouses make it a pleasure to wander, and street art turns up in the most unexpected corners.
And then there is the food. From street stalls to cafés to long-standing local eateries, the whole city is worth eating your way through.
If you can, give yourself a little time on either side of the conference to explore and eat.

This visit left us confident that PWCC is the right home for WordCamp Asia 2027: a large, comfortable space, a waterfront setting, and a host city with real character.
The theme for WordCamp Asia 2027 is “Modern Heritage Aesthetic” — fitting for a place where tradition and modernity sit so naturally together.
