BAKERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The “world's worst cat” is available for adoption — just ask the Mitchell County Animal Rescue organization in North Carolina.
The shelter about 55 miles (89 kilometers) northeast of Asheville is waiving adoption fees in the hope that someone will take the cat named Perdita off their hands.
The group says on its Facebook page, “We thought she was sick. Turns out she’s just a jerk.”
A tongue-in-cheek profile of the foul-tempered feline says her dislikes include “dogs, children, the Dixie Chicks, Disney movies, Christmas and last but NOT least ... HUGS.” It says she likes lurking, pretending to be sick and “staring into your soul until you feel as if you may never be cheerful again ...”
It adds, “She's single and ready to be socially awkward with a socially awkward human who understands personal space. "
Shelter Director Amber Lowery says 4-year-old Perdita came to the facility on Christmas Eve, The Charlotte Observer reported. Since then, the shelter has had to warn visitors that Perdita’s attempts to draw passersby to her cage are actually a ruse that will not end well.
“I’m looking at her right now, and she’s rolling around in her little bed, looking all sweet and cute, but the minute you try to rub her, she slaps you. We thought she was in pain and took her to the vet and he said: ‘No, this cat is just a jerk’,” Lowery told the newspaper.
Her Facebook post has drawn thousands of “likes” — and a followup post says more than 50 applications to adopt her have been submitted.
One person wrote on the shelter's Facebook page that they hoped Perdita finds “the goth home of her dreams.” The shelter replied, “Us too ... like soon.”

My SO, Kim, and I share expenses for things like groceries, rent, car maintenance, and meals out. Up to now, we’ve been using a spreadsheet I found on moneyunder30.com. We’ve started to outgrow it, so I decided to roll my own solution using ledger-cli and a custom, email-based interface.
The spreadsheet was falling short in a couple ways. It wasn’t easy to capture transaction detail. We could put it into the comments on a given cell, but it wasn’t convenient and we didn’t use it consistently. I also needed to determine how to create what we called “pass-through” transactions. These represented instances when Kim or I would purchase something on the other’s behalf. Unlike our shared expenses, we each needed to pay the other back for the full amount of the purchase. I created a place for this on the spreadsheet, but it wasn’t very transparent.
Using a more sophisticated solution should resolve these issues. The path forward was pretty clear:
Historically, I’ve had a hard time with the concept of double-entry bookkeeping. So, I knew I would need help to wrap my head around the concept. I ran a quick search on YouTube and found a series of videos on accounting basics by Accounting Stuff. In the channel’s “about” section, channel host James writes,
The channel had a whole playlist dedicated to accounting basics; I jumped into it immediately. I found his videos very easy to consume, and I learned all the pieces I had been missing. As I watched James' videos, I worked out a number of test scenarios on paper.
One concept I struggled with was defining the entity to which my journal entries belonged. I was trying to track expenses for Kim and myself, so is “Kim and myself” the entity? That was a bit tricky to think about, so I picked an entity that, at first, would have no existing financial relationship to Kim or myself – our cat, Abner.
Abner was going to start a business. The purpose of the business would be to purchase things that Kim and I needed using investment we provided. Each purchase would be represented by a transfer of equity from Kim or me to Abner’s cash account, and then a transfer from cash to the expense account. As purchases were made, the Expense account would be balanced by equity accounts assigned to Kim or me.
At the end of the month, Abner’s income would be calculated by subtracting expenses from revenue. Since Abner doesn’t have any way to generate revenue, he always operates at a loss. Abner’s negative income would then be distributed back to Kim’s and my equity accounts. These steps constitute the period-end close process. The balances of our equity accounts would indicate how much money needed to be transferred to even things out.
Learning Ledger CLI
So far, I had been doing all of my exercises on paper, but I needed to move to a computer-based solution. ledger-cli has been on my radar for a while, and I was excited to dig into it. From the ledger-cli page,
Having learned the basics of double-entry bookkeeping, learning ledger was pretty straight-forward. It uses a plain-text data format that is easy to manage by hand with an editor. Ledger doesn’t categorize accounts as normal debit accounts or normal credit accounts. I was glad that I learned about account types from Accounting Stuff so that I could apply these rules myself.
I created a test file and ran a few scenarios using the ledger reporting tool. Soon, I was replacing my test data with real data from the spreadsheet for the previous month. I created a month-end process to capture the expense totals for a target month, close expenses to income, and distribute the negative income back to our equity accounts. My month-end close process produced the same results as our spreadsheet.
To handle our pass-through transactions, I considered using a combination of A/R and A/P accounts. I decided to simplify things by representing it as a transfer from one equity account to another.
Building an Email Interface
To make it easy for Kim and me to interact with the ledger, adding transactions and pulling reports, I created an email-based user interface. We would need to be able to add transactions and pull balance and register reports.
Setting up an email server is pretty complicated and I’m not going to cover it here.
I set up Postfix to receive email at a given domain – let’s call it example.com.
When Postfix receives an email, it needs to decide what to do with it.
It looks at a file,
However, it’s possible to specify that a program should process the message, instead. This is how mailing lists and those email address verification tools work. The content of the message contains data that the program will use to complete its task. I’ve written about this before, in Email as an Application Interface.
In my case, there were three steps in processing an incoming email message and providing a response to the sender. First, I needed to trim off all the headers and other content that came with the email, but that I didn’t need. Second, I needed to parse the payload and update files or run ledger reports and capture the output. Finally, I needed to get the output back to the sender by email.
To better encapsulate related functionality,
I updated my email parsing script so that it could be used in a pipeline
and output a consistent format.
I called it
I ran into an issue where some characters in the text/plain portion of the email were being encoded.
This caused transactions in my expense file to have invalid data.
After a little searching,
I found that this was a transport encoding known as quoted-printable, or QP.
At first, I was concerned that I would have to create my own decoder,
but I found a simple decoder,
The default output format for ledger targets a display using a fixed-width font.
Because these reports would be viewed in an email client using a proportional-width font,
I had to develop custom output formats.
You’ll see them as arguments to the
I’m happy that I’ve finally been able to make use of ledger-cli, and I’m glad that I took the time to learn the basics of accounting from Accounting Stuff. Now I have a solution that is more convenient and can be extended in the future.

There’s always a smile plastered across the face of former two division world champion Danny Garcia. A big one at that.
His happy demeanor has always been for good reason. He spent the first ten years of his career as an undefeated fighter, and five of those years as a world champion before picking up the first loss of his career to Keith Thurman in 2017.
The man nicknamed “Swift” bounced back in a major way with a stoppage win against Brandon Rios before losing a close contest against Shawn Porter shortly after.
In 2019, Garcia was seen putting Adrian Granados on his backside en route to a stoppage win. With the victory, his trademark smile followed it shortly after.
You would be hard pressed to ever find Garcia without that aforementioned smile, but there was a storyline behind it. The smile was nothing but a lie. A mask if you will. Similar to the one he often wears on his way to the ring.
“I been boxing for 21 years since I was 10 years old,” said Garcia. “All the big fights and the pressure, sometimes you get tired of it. There’s a lot of pressure and people expect a lot out of you. Sometimes you forget what makes you happy. It becomes a business so it's like you’re not having fun anymore.”
Garcia’s time sulking in the demands and pressures that are associated with someone in his position didn't last long. By the time the former two division champion walks through the ring ropes against Ivan Redkach on January 25th, at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York, it will be nine full months since the boxing public has seen him.
Call it a mini vacation. A recharging period so to speak. Whatever you decide to name it, it worked. With the time spent away from the fight game, Garcia realized just how much it’s meant to him.
“I realized that this is what makes me happy. When I sit home and I’m not fighting I just don't feel happy so I'm just counting my blessings my right now. I fell back in love with the sport of boxing again. My last camp I felt good. This camp I felt good so I just want to go out there and count my blessings and give the fans a good show.”
It’s great to see Garcia come to the realization that he loves the sport once again, but hopefully he also realizes the position he currently occupies.
This contest against Redkach (23-4-1, 18 KOs) was never supposed to take place. Instead, a matchup against unified Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr (25-0, 21 KOs) was on his radar. Spence would of course go on to get involved in a horrific car accident which put that bout on hold.
So now, Garcia is in a prove it spot if you will. All eyes will be fixated on him and his performance.
Needless to say, a loss to Redkach ends any hopes he has of competing on the big stage once again. Even a struggle against Redkach could lead to Garcia being shoved to the side in favor of someone else.
“I wouldn't say it’s an audition but it’s a really important fight for me and my future. My future starts on Saturday night for all the big fights. I’ve been in a lot of big fights in my career. I’ve fought 13 world champions and been in 10 world title fights. I know Redkach is hungry but I know what it takes to win at this level. I know what a win on Saturday night will do for me and all the big fights that are right there waiting for me but I have to focus on Redkach right now, I can't overlook him. I have to dominate him and then the sky's the limit after that.”
It isn't just the sky, but the entire galaxy is at the fingertips of Garcia if he is able to pull off the victory on Saturday night. Garcia currently occupies the number one ranking in the WBO as well as the number two spots for the WBA and WBC as well. He essentially has his pick of any world champion if he manages to pick up the win.
Although many of the big names have continuously called him out, there is one fighter in particular who wants a fight with Garcia as soon as possible. One that shares a history with him as well.
“Yeah for sure, this is a business, anything can be made if it’s done right,” said Garcia when discussing the possibility of a fight with WBO belt holder Terence Crawford. “We fought for free in the amateurs so why not fight for money.”
A fight with Crawford would be a great one but not something that anyone should look forward to. Garcia might be interested in a bout with Crawford but he is even more interested in a showdown with either Errol Spence Jr or WBA titlist Manny Pacquiao.
“I like my chances against either one of those guys. It’ll be a great fight but I believe I can beat either of them but first things first, I have to take care of Redkach on Saturday night.”

From the moment Oscar De La Hoya burst onto the boxing scene, he was an instant star.
His 1992 Olympic gold medal and world titles in six different weight classes helped fuel a star studded career. De La Hoya hasn't stepped into the boxing ring from a competitive standpoint in over a decade, but now as a promoter, he has helped put several boxers on the map.
His biggest star, Canelo Alvarez is universally known as the face of boxing. His youngest, Lightweight contender Ryan Garcia is on the fast track to a great career himself.
Most of the older boxers who have retired from the sport have taken on the “get off my lawn” sort of approach to the boxers of today.
If anyone understands just how difficult it is to build a star profile from scratch, it would be De La Hoya. With Garcia headlining the first card of his career on Valentine’s Day, February 14th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, De La Hoya is happy as can be to have someone so young and talented as Garcia. At just 21 years of age, De La Hoya can mold Garcia into one of the biggest names in the sport today.
“There is so much talent out there these days that it sometimes does make it a little harder,” said De La Hoya when discussing the difficulties of building a star boxer today as opposed to the era he grew up in. “But when you have a talent like Ryan Garcia, it makes it a little easier because he is doing the work, he’s fighting in the ring and proving himself. As a promoter, it makes my job a lot easier. Yeah we still have to organize the whole event and negotiate and the venue and all of that so it’s a lot of work but when you have a fighter like Ryan who gets it, it makes my job a lot easier.”
Garcia might be making the life of De La Hoya easier now, but it wasn't always like that. Garcia came into the sport of boxing as a young 18 year old kid who believed he knew everything. The attitude and cockiness he showed both inside and outside of the ring may have brought him fans, but it was a constant headache for De La Hoya. Garcia isn't exactly a vet at 21 years of age, but he has at the very least, matured.
“It’s experience. Every fight that you have, every training camp, every day that you sweat, blood and tears it helps. It’s just the experience. You gain that momentum and confidence where you feel like you can take on the whole world. Only fights can do that for you and taking on people who are better, stronger, faster and training more can do that for you. Ryan obviously hasn't even reached his peak because he is so young but he is gaining that experience so that he could be the very best.”
The experience and maturity coupled with of course his skill level, has led directly to Garcia headlining this February 14th, card. It’s a milestone event for the young prospect but it could come with a major issue. Once a fighter transitions from the undercard to the main event, they seldom ever want to go back to the role of an undercard fighter again.
“We will have to see. Being under Canelo is always a good thing. But we’ll have to see because I believe that Ryan Garcia is going to be bigger than a lot of fighters that I promote. People love him. As long as he keeps performing the way he is performing then I think the sky's the limit.”
Garcia might be a fighter on his way to stardom but the sports biggest star in Canelo Alvarez has his own fight date coming within the next few months.
“I have a pending trip to his hometown in Mexico very soon. That’s our little ritual, we go down there and stay there for a few days and talk for hours and hours to figure out the game plan. Hopefully within the next couple weeks we will have somebody nailed down in concrete.”
Finding an opponent for Alvarez is both easy and extremely difficult at the same time. The Mexican star currently campaigns at three different weight divisions. Those being Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight. So while the options are long, it also means that everyone wants their shot at him. One name in particular that has emerged as a front runner is current WBO Super Middleweight titlist Billy Joe Saunders. If that’s the name your hoping will be announced, don’t hold your breath.
“No, not at all.”
With Billy Joe Saunders effectively out of the running for the Canelo fight, fans will just have to wait to find out who he’ll take on next.

Abraham Nova Scores 4th Round Knockout Over Navarrete
This past Saturday night, Split-T Management's world-ranked junior lightweight contender Abraham "Super" Nova was explosive in stopping veteran Pedro Navarrete in the 4th round of their scheduled eight-round bout at The Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.
Nova, of Albany, New York, is ranked number-seven by both the WBA and WBO is 18-0 with 14 knockouts. Navarrete, who has fought three future world champions and five more foes that competed for world titles, is now 30-25-3.
Nova was making his Top Rank debut and is co-promoted by Murphy's Boxing and 12 Rounds Promotions.
Jarrett Hurd Training Camp Quotes
Former unified 154-pound champion "Swift" Jarrett Hurd shared his thoughts on his ring return taking place Saturday, January 25 against Francisco Santana live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™, in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
"This fight isn't about making a statement," said Hurd. "I just want to get the win and fight a great fight. I'm going to remind the boxing world what it's like when I bring a storm to Brooklyn."
The January 25 co-main event will be Hurd's first fight with new trainer Kay Koroma. While Koroma trains fighters at the Alexandria Boxing Club in Virginia, not far from Hurd's Maryland home, he is also an assistant coach for the USA amateur boxing team, having helped various boxers win Olympic medals.
"Camp has been going great with my new trainer Kay Koroma," said Hurd. "We've been working on a lot of head movement and jabs. We're strictly focused on boxing and working on all the areas where I have room to grow. He's really opened my eyes to a lot of things."
For the Accokeek, Maryland native, this will be his first fight training outside of his home area as a pro fighter. He has been in Colorado Springs training since January 2 and has experienced both the positives and negatives of camp away from home.
"The positives are that there's literally nothing to focus on out here except boxing," said Hurd. "No distractions at all. The only negative is you can get homesick. I miss my girlfriend and my family. Also, I just got a new puppy named 'Bolt' and I miss my little guy too."
Hurd will be fighting again after losing his WBA and IBF 154-pound titles in May 2019 against Julian Williams. It was one of the most exciting fights of last year, and one that Hurd will hope to be running back soon, after a victory on January 25.
"The rematch with Julian Williams is what I always wanted," said Hurd. "I had no intentions of moving up in weight. Unfortunately, the rematch just couldn't happen sooner because of my circumstances."
For his first fight back, Hurd will be facing a tough veteran in Francisco Santana, one who has faced other top 154-pounders, including Williams and Jermell Charlo, and who always comes forward and brings the fight to his opponent. If Hurd is unprepared, it will show against his hard-charging opponent.
"We just wanted a matchup to get back in the groove of things," said Hurd. "I've been inactive for the better part of the last year. Santana being a smaller fighter, he will stay close and try to outwork me. I know he's coming to win, so I'm not thinking about anyone but Francisco Santana. We're going to work behind strategy and skills to get the victory."
Boxing fans have been calling for it, Long Island has been waiting for it, and CLETUS "THE HEBREW HAMMER" SELDIN (Shirley, Long Island 24-1 20KO'S) couldn't be more ready to make his ring return, back where it all began, at The Paramount, on February 28, at "Rockin' Fights."
Seldin is coming off the biggest win of his career, when he stopped boxing legend, and multi-time world champion, ZAB "SUPER" JUDAH (Brooklyn, NY 44-10 30KO's) in June of 2019 at Turning Stone Resort Casino during the coveted Hall of Fame boxing event. Over eleven dominating rounds, Seldin hurt Judah badly in the third, finding success in relentless pressure, culminating in an eleventh-round stoppage as Seldin, an underdog to the former world champ, earned the NABA Super Lightweight Title. With the victory Seldinentered back into the World ratings (#11 WBA, #12 IBF).
Making his seventeenth appearance at "Rockin' Fights," Seldinholds the record for most wins at The Paramount, the first of which came in 2011 with a quintessential KO over Rashad Bogar. Seldinwent on to have tremendous success at the Paramount, ultimately winning the WBC International Silver Super Lightweight Title in 2014, which he successfully defended three times.
In November of 2017, Seldin would display his world class power on the national stage in a featured fight on HBO against ROBERTO ORTIZ (then 35-1-2 26KO's). Seldin pounced on Ortiz from the opening bell and knocked knocked him out in the 3rd round in front of an electric crowd of his "Hamma Heads" fans at the Nassau Coliseum. Just one month later Seldin would make history as the only the third boxer to appear on HBO in back-to-back months, joining boxing legends MIKE TYSON and ROY JONES JR..
Seldin has fully recovered from a surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder which he suffered in the Judah fight in June. Riding a three-fight knockout streak, Seldin looks to continue his rise in the world rankings in his return to The Paramount. Seldinhad this to say about his return home, "It feels great to be home where it all started. There is no venue like The Paramount, and I cannot wait to be back. I feel healthy and plan on putting on a show for all the 'Hamma Heads' who come out on February 28."

"Blair has all the tools to be a world champion," stated Brandon Woods, Cobbs' trainer, "He has defeated great opponents and done it in a style that is very entertaining. I see Blair accomplishing some incredible goals in 2020, and I know he's done everything in the gym to be at his best come fight night."
"I love what I do," Cobbs continued. "I am ready to have another great year and continue to put on a great, entertaining show for the fans. It's Blair "The Flair" time baby, WOOOO!
Evan Holyfield Gets Visit from Christy Martin
Evan “Yung Holy” Holyfield’s (2-0, 2 KOs) next fight will take place on a Christy Martin Promotions card at Hard Rock Hotel Daytona on Saturday, February 8.
Boxing legend Christy Martin stopped by Holyfield's Houston Training Camp to look in on Four-Time World Heavyweight Champion Evander Holyfield's son and came away impressed.
"Most importantly he is a great young man,"said Christy. "He has great speed and power. His work ethic looks unbeatable."
"It was really great that Christy came by and she gave me some psychological tips to use during my training," Evan said. "Right now we are in the middle of camp - sparring just started and things are getting more intense, which I like. I enjoy when things are hard."
This Daytona Beach is about a six hour drive from Atlanta, where Evan grew up. "I am excited to fight in Daytona – it’s a little closer than my two previous fights. Mom says she is coming with some of the fam. My amateur coach plans to make the drive down, and so are a few friends. I also have a couple of friends in the military that are based in Daytona that will also be there."
Holyfield announced himself to the professional boxing world on the Canelo-Kovalev November 2 fight card at MGM Grand with a spectacular seventeen second stoppage (TKO 1), which you can watch HERE His second fight took place in Houston on November 23, stopping his opponent with a vicious body shot (KO 4). TVS is all set to launch the new Apache RR 310 BS6 on January 30, 2020. The updated model will conform to the upcoming Bharat Stage 6 emission norms. TVS’ flagship motorcycle is also expected to get additional features, as we’d seen in a recent spy shot.
Said image revealed the BS6 Apache RR 310 sporting a new dual-tone paint scheme and new graphics. But the most significant update was seen in the form of the bike's new TFT instrument cluster that may possibly feature Bluetooth connectivity – much like the SmartXonnect system seen on the new Apache RTR 200 4V.
The current Apache RR 310 is powered by a 312.2cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder motor that produces 34hp and 27.3Nm of torque. Considering that the recently launched Apache RTRs came with a slight dip in output figures with the switch to BS6, we could expect a drop in the Apache RR 310’s performance as well. The issue with vibrations – which was taken care of, to quite an extent, with the RR 310's last update a few months ago, could also see further improvement in the BS6-compliant model.
We are set to ride the updated Apache RR 310 soon, and our review for the bike will be up on February 1, 2020. Watch this space for more.

Howdy, folks! Welcome to the first edition of the McMansion Hell
Yearbook - a year by year account of how the McMansion came to be. We
begin our tour of time in the year 1970.
Why 1970: A Brief History Lesson
or not the McMansion belongs to canonical or vernacular (everyday)
architecture is a topic of some dispute - for example, Thomas Hubka, in
his book Houses Without Names claims that the McMansion is simply
the latest iteration of highly-customized architecture designed by and
for rich people, which is why it doesn’t belong in studies of vernacular
architecture. However, Hubka himself includes in his evolutionary study
of floorplans, a type called “Large Suburban” which features a central foyer flanked by formal rooms leading into a vast living/entertaining space and kitchen. The question of where “Large Suburban” ends and “McMansion”
begins is perhaps less of an architectural question than it is a
cultural one, but that’s something we’ll discuss in more detail later on in this series.
A Styled Split-Level from a 1960 trade publication. Public Domain.
Meanwhile, Virginia McAlester includes McMansions, called “Millennium Mansions” in the second edition of the Field Guide to American Houses,
a phenomenon she places as starting around 1985. However, like most
architectural phenomenons, the McMansion didn’t just appear out of
nowhere. Its predecessor is what McAlester called the
Styled Ranch (and Styled Split Level) - an elaboration of the ranches and split-levels of midcentury featuring the costuming of the simple ranch form in a variety of different architectural styles or themes including Colonial Revival, Neoclassical, Mediterranean, and Tudor. How these styled ranches and split levels escalated into the sprawling McMansions we know today is something this new series hopes to tackle.
Enough history (for now)! Here’s our 1970 house found in none other than Bergen County, New Jersey.
This 5,600 square-foot house features 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms and can be all yours for ~$1.8 million USD. You’ll notice a lot of things about this house that are not McMansion-like: its symmetry, its lack of a complex roofline, its unified exterior claddings and window styles. However, this is why the house is interesting - it is not as much a McMansion as it is a proto-McMansion. Many McMansion features are apparent in their nascent form, for example, the competing architectural styles of Tudor (windows) and Neoclassical (portico, front door, quoins), the tacked-on mass containing the three car garage, an ostentatious pediment with elaborate columns, and extruded double bay windows.
The most interesting of these proto-features is the front entryway, an early development of what will be known on this blog as the Lawyer Foyer. We see a large central window above the door (architectural historian Charles Jencks traces this to LA in his book Daydream Houses of Los Angeles, appropriately calling it the “LA Door”), with an outdoor decorative light dangling in front of it, a motif borrowed from certain, usually later iterations of the split level (seen in this example [top left] from a 1963 trade catalog). Let’s step inside:
Proto-Lawyer Foyer (Law School Foyer???)
What’s interesting about this example is that it is very McMansion like in its use of a large curved staircase and over-indulgent chandelier. However, the above-door window has yet to merge with the front door into a transom-window, and the chandelier, though large and ornate, has yet to replace the lantern outside as the lighting feature that can be seen from the street.
Though this house tends to feature more Louis XV-style furniture (my suspicion is that this might be evidence of an 80s or 90s era redecorating), the emphasis on bulky, ornate 18th century reproduction furniture, moldings, and wallpaper is indicative of the fascination in the 1970s towards the (American) Colonial era in anticipation of the 1976 American Bicentennial. You can read more about this in this fantastic and captivating Collector’s Weekly article.
As we can see, the stuffy formal dining room has always existed in McMansions, simply because it has always existed in rich people houses in general since the dawn of time.
While ugly and too big, this living room definitely is more reminiscent of a ranch-style living room than it is a McMansion great room. It even has doors (heresy!) Personally I stan those 70s brick veneer fireplaces because they are groovy and increasingly hard to find.
Oh. I should mention that you’re really, really not prepared for what you’re about to see in the next room.
For some reason having a racehorse shrine seems, like, peak New Jersey.
If your nana or great aunt didn’t have these wyd
I should add that the listing for this house shows none of the six bathrooms, and, after viewing this room, I have to believe there’s a reason for that.
Is there a tacky wallpaper museum?? If so, how do I get on the board of directors???
Anyways, this concludes our interior tour. Let’s go back outside.
Well, on that (thankfully more subdued than usual) note, this concludes our 1970 entry in the McMansion Hell Yearbook. See you soon with an update on Brutalism, and stay tuned for next month’s 1971 McMansion.

Wow! It was another great year for the McGingerbread Hell Gingerbread
House Competition! The judges had their work cut out for them selecting
between so many fine selections. Congratulations and great job to
everyone who submitted an entry in this year’s contest. However, only
six houses could make the cut.
Let’s start out with announcing the winners for Honorable Mention.
Honorable Mention: Priced to Sell! by Tina B.
The judges were wowed by the impressive nub, the tumorous turret, and the fantastically mismatched windows.
Quote from the Project Description: A true GEM of a house! 6,738 SF beautifully set on .23 parklike acres. Mediterranian villa in front, stately Federal in the back; it’s the mullet of houses!…Entertain in your beautiful backyard featuring a real StoneTek™ patio! The heavily pruned weeping cherry tree will be a real showstopper in 30-40 years! The largest roof in the neighborhood has Chex shingle roof in molasses brown. 4 BR / 5.5 BA / $899,000 / Days on market - 923
Honorable Mention: Festive Roofline Soup by Jessica C.
The judges LOVED the complexity of the roofline, the absurd gabling, and the 3 car garage.
Quote from the Project Description: Features include: • Flaked almond shingles covering a roofline so complex that it required trigonometrical expertise from my math teacher father to work out measurements…[and] A low maintenance yard as the house takes up almost the entire block! Now accepting offers; the sellers are motivated as the couple are in the middle of divorce proceedings.
Honorable Mention: Vinyl Vanity by Joseph & Kayla S.
The judges were impressed by the impressive garage to roof ratio, the roof detailings, the candy-cane columns, and excellent lawyer foyer.
Quote from the Project Description: This 2 square foot, two and a half story Craftsmen Tudor Post Classical Revival estate is the luxurious home that your friends and neighbors never wanted…The car is truly the heart of Tudor England, so we put the garage proudly up front, where the yawning chasm of the door greets the outside world with disdain…Be sure to schedule your private tour soon, this edifice is sure to not last long. On the market. If you’re curious about the price, you’re probably too economically responsible for this property.
And now, our top 3:
Third Place: A Jersey Thing by Nùria O.
impressed by the size, shape, and meticulous detailing of the project,
which is reminiscent of a truly terrible McModern. Anjulie, seeing the
size of the huge roof said “this is some sustainable sh*t.” This project captures the true McMansion ethos in truly making us say “what the hell is going on here?”
Project Description: Inspired by a beatiful RealLife™ McMansion™ in Beach Haven, NJ, this
year’s featured McGingerbread mansion is a modern 5-bedroom, 16-bathroom
home made entirely in construction-grade gingerbread and held together
with royal icing made from free-range egg whites. The nonpareil- and
sugar-crystal-covered walls provide both isolation from stormy weather
and give a vintage air to counterbalance the futuristic lines of the
design…On the back of the house, you
can walk out to a large deck (perfect for entertainment) boasting a
valuable one-piece handrail. From there you can access the beautiful
mediterranean garden, set in candy charcoal and stones, environmentally
friendly as it’s practically maintenance free. Don’t miss your chance to
visit this unique home—feel the sugar rush!
Second Place: Victorian Opulence by Beth & Tina C.
Reigning McGingerbread champs Beth & Tina C. returned to the scene this year with yet another gorgeous gingerbread. Judges were wowed by the complexity and scale of the project. Sarah was impressed by the intricate piping and lots of frilly details, and the homage to the traditional Victorian gingerbread form. Anjulie described it as “unbearably neat” - she loved the uncantilevered bay window, the detached garage that makes entryway irrelevant, and the hilarious-front balcoiny with half-wall (not code compliant). Kate was impressed by the detailing and the extensive cantilevers which too serious structural engineering to pull off.
Project description: New from the creators that brought you a true monstrosity last year: The Victorian Opulence! Featuring a lovely wrap around porch, adorable detached garage, and a truly magnificent waterfall in the backyard, this monolith of a house features thee decks overlooking somewhat patchy but still rescueable landscaping. Other features include an outdoor patio, a tower for all your princess capturing needs, and a truly cursed facade featuring a curved roof of all things! With several nubbins featuring windows, there is no angle on this house you can’t see out of! Standing at nearly 2 feet tall and with an approximate total floor area of 550 square inches-excluding outdoor seating area-this Victorian style home will surely be the envy of all the gingerbread men in your country club. (Snow removal not included as part of HOA membership fees.)
First Prize: Simply Having a Wonderful Building Crime by Erin E.
The judges all agreed: this house was outrageous - its execution was fantastic, and its design was full of so many delightful, humorous details. Sarah remarked: “This one is perfectly McMasion-scaled, with weirdly placed windows and gratuitous features to boot.” Anjulie couldn’t sing the praises enough: “I was particularly taken with the garage that is so far detached it makes the front door totally irrelevant…it’s a castle of grand sadness. The Pete Buttigieg sign is the literal icing on top.” Kate loved the details: the Pete sign, the ridiculously diverse selection of windows, the piped on invasive plants and basketball hoop, and the glass and siding effects. Part of the competition lies in its absurdity and humor, and in that particular category, this house took the cake.
Project description: This home Defies the Ordinary. Located on a 2.3 acre lot, you’ll be the
envy of all your neighbors–and can watch from the top of the turret to
be sure they’re suitably jealous! Enjoy sitting al fresco under the
portico above the garage, or on the hand-laid M&M stone patio! The
two-story entryway accounts for just a few of the more than 60 sugar
glass windows! All of the walls join up exactly where the architect
expected them to, and no windows were covered up on accident!!!
Constructed over two weeks, out of ten pounds of flour, four pounds of powdered sugar, and more than half a gallon of corn syrup, this modest four-story house will surely stand the test of time. It’s been meticulously decorated with royal icing vines, wreaths, and Christmas lights, and landscaped with gingerbread boulders, definitely-naturally-this-green icing grass, and coconut macaroon topiary. The roof stands at 17 inches high, and is crafted from waffle cookie shingles over gingerbread rafters. For sale for just $1,895,000, this house is just perfect for new families or young professionals just starting out!
Special thanks to everyone who entered this year and to our judges Sarah Archer and Anjulie Rao for their contributions in pulling off yet another successful entry our search for the Gingerbread McMansion Hall of Fame!
See you next week with this month’s 1970 McMansion.

The last time we saw Jean-Luc Picard was in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis, a not-particularly-great film that ended with the legendary Starfleet captain striding through the corridors of the Enterprise with Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies” swelling optimistically over the soundtrack.
In CBS All Access’ ambitious new series Star Trek: Picard, “Blue Skies” is the first thing we hear—but this time, the song is tinged with melancholy, pointing not to the future but to a past heavy with regret. These days, Picard—once again played by Patrick Stewart, and self-deprecatingly calling himself a “benign old codger”—wanders his dead brother’s vineyard, writes history books, and dreams, each night, of lost starships and absent friends. Despite the sun-dappled fields and the company of Number One, his excellent pit bull, his days are hollow. “The dreams,” Picard says, “are lovely. It’s the waking up that I’m beginning to resent.”
That, and the echoes of the man he used to be.
“Sir?” a friend tells Picard in the first episode. “Be the captain they remember.”
But he can’t. Too much time has passed, and too much has been lost.
This is, however, Star Trek, so the weary tranquility of Chateau Picard is promptly upended by Dahj (Isa Briones), a brilliant, terrified young woman who feels an inexplicable need to find Picard. Soon enough, there are planet-destroying supernovas and murderous robots, threats of a shadowy conspiracy, and, as with all Star Trek, some tongue-twisting technobabble. (“Fractal neuronic cloning”! “Forensic molecular reconstruction”!) Phasers fire, planets burn, and the Romulans are definitely up to something in that creepy, abandoned Borg cube.
Picard senses trouble, but even those closest to him question his urgency, wondering if his principles have ossified into self-righteousness. “There’s no peril here,” a Starfleet admiral sneers when Picard requests a ship and crew in order to investigate. “Only the pitiable delusions of a once-great man desperate to matter.”
A crack breaks across Picard’s face when he hears that, following lines that weren’t there before: Deluded or not, he is old. Stewart, at once mournful and driven, has never been better in the role he said he’d never return to; it’s to his credit that Picard isn’t the captain we remember. His voice is more tired. His steps can be unsteady. When a panicked Dahj pulls him into a chase, only seconds pass before he wheezes, out of breath.
At a time when it seems every actor gets their wrinkles erased with CGI—from the geriatric stars of The Irishman to the child actors of It—Picard’s embrace of its characters’ ages feels at once extraordinary and of a piece with the series. “Was Star Trek always supposed to feel a little old?” Darren Franich asked in 2016. “I don’t mean ‘archaic,’ although so much of Trek looks archaic now, and the phone you’re reading this on can accomplish greater technological wonders than any Enterprise console. But is Star Trek supposed to be about people of a certain age? Let’s say ‘over 35,’ just old enough to have regrets and long-lost friends and whole forgotten periods of their lives.”
Albeit for commercial reasons more than philosophical ones, some of the best Trek has embraced its aging actors—and examined the challenges that face once-strapping heroes when the universe keeps expanding, oblivious to their accomplishments. (In 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, a clock gently ticks away as Bones wishes a morose Kirk a happy birthday with some contraband Romulan Ale—and a pair of reading glasses.) It’s probably not a coincidence that Trek’s most memorable characters—from Spock to Seven of Nine—are those who grow from their experiences, becoming, as they age, something greater than before.
The showrunner for this first season of Picard is Michael Chabon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author who’s wrestled with the passage of time, slow and swift, in novels from Wonder Boys to Moonglow. And over its first few episodes, as Picard redefines his purpose, it’s hard not to remember an essay Chabon wrote over a decade ago, now collected in Manhood for Amateurs: The Pleasures and Regrets of a Husband, Father, and Son.
“As I get older,” he wrote, “I seem every day to give a little bit less of a fuck what other people think of or say about me. This is not the result of my undertaking to exercise a moral program or of increased wisdom or of any kind of willed act on my part. It just seems to be a process, a time-directed shedding, like the loss of hair or illusions.”
Stewart’s hair was already gone when Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered in 1987, but it’s not until Picard that one realizes Picard’s illusions have likewise vanished. Having realized some relationships will never return, and that some experiences haunt us as profoundly as they make us, Picard’s lived long enough to see his most valued beliefs falter. (“I never dreamed that Starfleet would give in to intolerance and fear,” a wounded Picard says, a line that aches with relevance.) That hard-earned clarity makes it all the more affecting when Picard, never one to soften a blow, faces the truth. “I haven’t been living,” he says. “I’ve been waiting to die.”
Shortly afterward, Picard lives again—once more standing on the bridge of a starship, surrounded by what seems like the beginnings of a sturdy crew. (Most notably, the excellent Alison Pill plays Dr. Agnes Jurati, an expert in artificial intelligence, while Michelle Hurd plays Raffi Musiker, Picard’s former second-in-command.) He isn’t in the captain’s chair—the time for that, it seems, has passed—but Picard still faces the stars.
“Engage,” he says, and the word feels—just as it did when Stewart first uttered it in The Next Generation—like a promise of adventure. But in Star Trek: Picard, the sentiment behind it feels richer. This trip isn’t only about where we’re going. It’s also about where we are, and where we’ve been.
Star Trek: Picard is now streaming, with new episodes released weekly, on CBS All Access.

A new proposed rule would vastly restrict who and what counts as an emotional support animal.
by Katie Herzog
The golden age of scamming airlines out of pet fees may be coming to an end.
On Wednesday, the Department of Transportation released a proposed rule that would vastly restrict who and what counts as an emotional support animal for the purpose of flying. Currently, all you need to qualify is a letter from a therapist (or therapy mill) stating that your emotional support animal brings you emotional support. (You know, like a pet.) And then, with this letter—which can be purchased online for less than $200—your emotional support pet flies for free.
If this sounds insane, well, it is, but it started out as a noble effort. Federal law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities, and the Air Carrier Access Act states that "any animal" that assists a passenger or provides him or her with emotional support must be permitted to fly at no cost. The idea wasn't to pack airplanes with pets, it was to accommodate people who use trained service animals like seeing-eye dogs. But while the law may have been well-intended, it also prevents airlines from questioning people about their alleged disabilities and why they need to bring their animals on a plane. If you have a letter, your animal gets a free pass and no gate attendant can say shit about it.
As word of these policies spread—and as the letters, thanks to the internet, have become easier to get—the number of ESAs on airplanes has grown. And so have the problems. Delta, for instance, says they saw an 84 percent increase in “reported animal incidents" between 2016 and 2018, including "urination/defecation, biting and even a widely reported attack by a 70-pound dog.” Other airlines have reported similar trends, including emotional support dogs biting both passengers and staff. (And it's not just dogs that get this designation: ESAs have included turkeys, sugar gliders, snakes, spiders, and, in 2018, a hamster whose owner flushed it down an airport toilet after being told—wrongly—it wasn't allowed on her flight.)
Some airlines have made attempts to crack down on ESAs, including requiring 48-hour notice and banning certain species. In 2018, Delta banned hedgehogs, ferrets, insects, rodents, snakes, spiders, reptiles, amphibians, goats, non-household birds, and animals with tusks, horns, and hooves. Other airlines followed suit, and this week, some in the industry cheered the proposed policy change from the Department of Transportation, which would define a service animal as "a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability." That means no more emotional support peacocks on American flights—and, they hope, fewer fakers.
"The increased availability of fraudulent ESA credentials has enabled people who are not truly in need of animal assistance to abuse the rules and evade airline policies regarding animals in the cabin," Airlines for America, a lobbying group for the industry, said in a statement. "This has led to an increase in incidents by untrained animals threatening the health and safety of passengers, crew, and passengers with disabilities traveling with legitimate service animals."
I suspect, however, that it's not just frauds and fakes trying to get free airfare for their pets that have lead to the spike in ESAs on planes. Rates of anxiety and depression have been going up, and so it makes sense that as more people experience mental health issues, more people would want their emotional support animals to comfort them. The question is, does it actually help?
Turns out, we don't really know. While there is ample evidence that interacting with animals can relieve anxiety and depression temporarily, in the long-term, the evidence just isn't there. In fact, the anthrozoologist Hal Herzog (yes, we are related) looked at 30 studies assessing depression rates in pet owners and non-pet owners, and he found that, while the pet industry has been remarkably successful at convincing people that pets make you happy, the results are decidedly mixed: Some studies found that pets owners are less depressed; others found they're more.
As Herzog wrote wrote on the website Psychology Today, "Despite media headlines extolling the curative powers of dolphins, dogs, horses, and Guinea pigs, there is little evidence of the long-term effectiveness of emotional support animals for the treatment of mental problems. Indeed, it is possible that they can sometimes have an enabling function which actually prolongs an individual’s psychological issues."
In other words, ESAs can possibly become a kind of crutch that, in the end, impedes some people from developing a sense of resilience. It's like carrying a blankie or sucking your thumb, which may be soothing but doesn't actually make people better able to handle life when things start to go south.
The DOT proposal is, at this point, just that. There's a 60-day comment period, after which a rule will be formally issued (or not). And if it does go forth, anxious travelers, take heart: the DOT might crack down on emotional support animal, but they can never take away your pre-flight Xanax.
