GA-Sen-B: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Rev. Raphael Warnock, a senior pastor at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and a voting rights advocate, is "expected to announce his candidacy within days." The paper had previously reported that national Democrats were keen on Warnock's candidacy, and they also relay that 2018 gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams is rumored to be backing Warnock as well.

MT-Gov: Democratic Sen. Jon Tester has endorsed Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney in the Democratic primary for governor, where Cooney's main rival so far appears to be businesswoman Whitney Williams.

UT-Gov: State Attorney General Sean Reyes announced on Friday that he won't be joining the crowded Republican field for governor and will instead seek re-election in November.

NC-Sen: Meanwhile, Cunningham has debuted his first TV ad ahead of the March 3 primary. The spot features Cunningham speaking to the camera and highlighting his military service, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. Cunningham denounces corruption in D.C. and says he'll fight to lower prescription drug costs, guarantee coverage for pre-existing conditions, and finally expand Medicaid (North Carolina is one of the few holdouts to not expand Medicaid under Obamacare thanks to Republican state legislative opposition).

CA-50: San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has endorsed former Rep. and fellow Republican Darrell Issa.

Tuesday, Jan 21, 2020 · 6:17:17 PM +00:00 · Stephen Wolf

FL-03: Former Gainesville Mayor Ed Braddy, who serves as Alachua County GOP chair, is the latest candidate to enter the crowded Republican primary for this safely red open seat. Braddy joins a GOP field that includes Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn, 2018 House candidate Judson Sapp, Clay County Commissioner Gavin Rollins, businesswoman Amy Pope Wells, physician James St. George, and Kat Cammack, who has worked as an aide to retiring Rep. Ted Yoho. Meanwhile, former Gainesville City Commissioner Todd Chase has formed an exploratory committee and said that he thinks he'll decide before the end of the month.

FL-16: Republican Rep. Vern Buchanan has released an internal poll from Data Targeting that finds him holding a large 53-33 edge over Democratic state Rep. Margaret Good. While Good is almost certainly starting out with much lower name recognition than the incumbent, Buchanan's 42-22 positive favorable rating could be indicative of him being tough to beat in November.

GA-14, GA-07: Air Force veteran Ben Bullock has dropped out of the crowded Republican primary for the competitive 7th District and will instead join the growing primary for the open and safely red 14th District. Bullock enters a field in the 14th that includes fellow Air Force veteran Clayton Fuller, neurosurgeon John Cowan, and construction company owner Marjorie Greene.

Tuesday, Jan 21, 2020 · 6:28:51 PM +00:00 · Stephen Wolf

MA-04: Attorney Ben Sigel is the newest Democrat to enter the packed primary for the heavily Democratic 4th District. Sigel's campaign notes that he would be the first Latino member of Congress from Massachusetts if elected, and his rivals for the Democratic nomination include City Year co-founder Alan Khazei; Newton City Councilors Becky Walker Grossman and Jake Auchincloss; Dave Cavell, who is a former senior adviser to state Attorney General Maura Healey; former Wall Street regulator Ihssane Leckey; and former Alliance for Business Leadership head Jesse Mermell.

NJ-11, NJ-07: The New Jersey Globe reports that tax attorney Rosemary Becchi will drop out of the GOP primary in the 7th District, making way for state Senate Minority Leader Thomas Kean Jr. to have a clear path to the Republican nomination there, and instead challenge Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill in the 11th District. Becchi said on Sunday that she'd decide early this week, but the Globe conveys that it's already a done deal. If Becchi does switch races, former Kinnelon Councilman Larry Casha wouldn't rule out dropping out of the GOP primary in the 11th District to make way for her to run there, but he said he's still running as of now.

KS-Sen: Keep America Great PAC, which is supporting Rep. Roger Marshall for the GOP nomination, has released a poll from the firm co/Efficient that finds Marshall holding a 29-28 edge over former 2018 gubernatorial nominee Kris Kobach, while state Senate President Susan Wagle takes just 6% and none of the other candidates were tested. While national Republicans have fretted that the damaged Kobach could win the nomination and risk their hold over what should be a strongly Republican seat, this survey bolsters Marshall's argument that he could increase his support once he's better-known, since his name recognition is much lower than Kobach's.

TX-22: Retiring Republican Rep. Pete Olson has endorsed Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star CEO Pierce Bush, the Bush family scion who is running in the crowded primary to succeed Olson.

TX-17: Construction company owner Scott Bland has launched his first TV ad ahead of the March 3 GOP primary. Bland relays his experience serving in the secret service after 9/11 and says he's "ready to take a bullet for President Trump ...." Bland then attacks "the Squad" and the "liberal media" before listing off his support for typical pro-Trump priorities such as building the border wall.

MT-AL: Rancher Matt Rains dropped out of the Democratic primary for Montana's open House seat on Tuesday and endorsed former state Rep. Kathleen Williams, who was the party's nominee in 2018. That leaves state Rep. Tom Winter as the only other notable candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. Five different Republicans, meanwhile, are running for this seat, which GOP Rep. Greg Gianforte is leaving to run for governor.

As for Rains, he announced a bid for the 22nd State House District in Great Falls area, which is currently held by Republican Lola Sheldon-Galloway. This seat moved sharply toward Trump in 2016, giving him a 55-36 win, but in 2012, Mitt Romney carried it by just a 49-47 margin. Republicans control the chamber 58-42.

PA-01: Bucks County Prothonotary Judi Reiss ended her bid for the Democratic nomination in Pennsylvania's 1st Congressional District on Monday. The move leaves a trio of candidates in the race for the right to take on GOP Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick: Bucks County housing department official Christina Finello, Pennsbury school board member Debbie Wachspress, and businessman Skylar Hurwitz.

Interestingly, one reason Reiss cited for her departure was her increased responsibilities in county government. That came about because Democrats won control of the Bucks County Board of Commissioners in November for the first time since 1983.

TX-28: Jessica Cisneros, who is challenging Rep. Henry Cuellar in the March Democratic primary, has now joined the incumbent on the airwaves. Cisneros narrates her first TV ad (which she's airing in both English and Spanish) herself, saying that she decided to become a lawyer as a child and eventually became an immigration attorney. She says she's running for Congress "to fight for health care for everyone and stand up against Donald Trump's wall and cruel immigration policies." While she doesn't mention Cuellar, she concludes by saying that "South Texas needs a new voice."

MD-07: While former Democratic Rep. Kweisi Mfume has long insisted that he voluntarily resigned as president of the NAACP in 2004, a new article in the Baltimore Sun confirms reports from 2005 that said Mfume had in fact been let go by the organization's board.

According to a document prepared by Julian Bond, who at the time was chair of the NAACP's board, the decision not to renew Mfume's contract "came after a long period of growing dissatisfaction with high and constant staff turnovers, falling revenues, falling memberships, three consecutive negative performance appraisals, highly questionable hiring and promotion decisions, creation of new staff positions with no job descriptions, and personal behavior which placed each of us at legal and financial risk." The last part may be a reference to an NAACP employee who accused Mfume of sexual harassment and threatened to sue.

Mfume has also maintained that the board never informed him of its displeasure, but Bond's papers (which are maintained in a public archive at the University of Virginia, where he taught before his death in 2015) record that members of the board's executive committee met with Mfume "face-to-face" to tell him of their decision. Mfume would not speak with the Sun about Bond's documents and instead released a statement saying, "Sometimes strong-willed leaders have differences of opinion. Julian and I were no different."

Questions about Mfume's tenure at the NAACP did not arise during his unsuccessful 2006 bid for Senate, and his opponents in the Feb. 4 primary for the April 28 special election haven't raised the topic either. However, at the first and only debate of the race on Monday night, a moderator asked Mfume, "How can we trust you not to take advantage of your position?" Mfume acknowledged that a relationship he had with a subordinate at the NAACP was a mistake but did not discuss the sexual harassment allegations.

İstanbul Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı terminal binasına verilen LEED sertifikasını dünyada New York JFK (ABD), New York La Guardia (ABD) , San Diego (ABD), Cidde Kral Abdülaziz (Suudi Arabistan), Zagreb (Hırvatistan) havalimanlarının yanı sıra Türkiye’den de İzmir Adnan Menderes Havalimanı'na verilmişti.

“Smart” Guns and Mandatory Storage: Two Bad Policy Ideas Cut from the Same Tattered Cloth

Whenever a tragedy strikes that involves a firearm, no matter how statistically rare the event may actually be, you can count on anti-gun extremists to try to exploit it. The responses from those opposed to the Second Amendment upon hearing that a fatality resulted when a firearm was used by a criminal, or accessed by someone who should not have access, tend to sound fairly similar. If a ban isn’t the response selected from the handful of ideas gun control advocates have been promoting for decades, then added restrictions on law-abiding gun owners is the policy du jour.

Restricting access to guns is a very popular notion among those who feel there should be far less freedom when it comes to responsible gun ownership.

In a misguided and misinformed attempt to limit access to firearms by those who should not have access to them (at least, in the mind of the supporters of gun control), the idea of mandatory storage laws was born. And as firearm technology has advanced (although not nearly as fast as anti-gun advocates think or would like), the little brother of mandatory storage laws, “smart” gun mandates, was conceived.

Methods for securing and storing firearms, as well as “smart” guns, may very well be options that law-abiding gun owners will want to explore to see if either or both satisfy their particular needs. But the operative word here is “options.”

Government mandates on “safe” storage and “smart” guns are not just anathema to those who cherish individual liberty, but are policies ill-conceived, and potentially deadly.

Mandatory storage laws, which the gun-ban community euphemistically refers to as “safe” storage laws, tend to look like they were all spit out of the same gun-control factory, with only small variations. In general, they require all firearms within the home to be locked with a trigger-locking device or kept in a locked container or safe, unless a firearm is in the actual possession of the lawful owner.

What these proposals overlook is the fact that gun safety and storage is a matter of personal responsibility and every person’s situation is different. It is unreasonable for the government to impose a one-size-fits-all solution. More importantly, mandatory storage laws invade people’s homes and forces them to render their firearms useless in a self-defense situation by locking them up.

In addition, those who wish to gain access to a firearm for nefarious purposes are not going to be deterred by a trigger lock or a locked container; both devices having been shown to be easily defeated by determined criminals. And while a safe is certainly far more reliable for securing firearms, their cost is prohibitive for many.

“Smart” gun mandates are similarly problematic, although perhaps even more dangerous.

While the idea of a gun that can only be used by someone authorized to use it is intriguing, the technology simply doesn’t exist. There have certainly been developments in the field, but everything that has been offered or tested has had problems. Either the “smart” aspect of restricting who may use it is easily defeated, or the gun aspect of firing when an authorized user is operating it is unreliable.

Being unable to access a firearm when needed, because it is locked away in a safe or otherwise “secured” is one thing. Trying to use a firearm to defend yourself or your loved ones against a violent criminal, only to find the “smart” technology fails at the most critical time, could be even worse.

In spite of the fact that at least one Democrat Presidential candidate seems convinced “smart” guns are a thing, they simply are not.

In the real world, firearms remain useful and effective tools in the hands of law-abiding citizens as a deterrent to violent crime. But only if the government doesn’t mandate ridiculous and dangerous policies like storage requirements or “smart” guns. And this isn’t just a hypothetical argument, as an incident in San Diego, California recently highlighted.

According to reports, a man broke into a home in the Lake Murray area of San Diego, then attacked and stabbed the homeowner. The violent criminal was only stopped when the victim’s 20-year-old son, according to police, “retrieved a firearm and shot the intruder.”

So, why is this case particularly poignant? Because San Diego recently took the first steps to implementing a mandatory storage law.

The proposal “would require gun owners to store guns in a locked container or disable them with a trigger lock when not in the person’s immediate control or being worn on their person.” Had the law been in effect this week, and had the victims of this violent assault been in compliance, one wonders whether the outcome would have been dramatically, and tragically, different.

If the victim’s son was unable to access the firearm he used without first opening a safe or removing a trigger lock, provided he even had the ability to do either, the violent criminal may very well have continued his assault unabated.

Even the local news notes some are questioning the new proposed storage requirements in light of this crime, stating, “The situation is making residents think twice about the new law that, if it were already in effect, could have altered the outcome of this burglary.”

Of course, similar concerns could be raised if San Diego had a “smart” gun mandate in place, but at least the City Council hasn’t taken that approach…yet.

On the other side of the country, however, the Garden State had already decided “smart” gun mandates should remain part of the future of gun control.

In 2002, New Jersey passed a law stating that, once “smart” guns were certified as viable, only handguns incorporating this technology could be sold in the state. This, of course, amounts to nothing more than a ban on traditional handguns. But after almost two decades, “smart” gun technology remained unproven, unreliable, and undesired by America’s gun owners. Without any significant developments or improvements in “smart” gun research that would lead to certification of firearms that satisfy the law passed in 2002, anti-gunners are using a new approach to attempting to force these mythical products into existence.

[Recently], rabidly anti-gun New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) signed into law a requirement that every gun dealer in the state offer at least one model of “smart” gun for sale. A commission will be established to determine a list of firearms that qualify as “smart” guns.

Typically, when you have to force businesses to sell a product, that’s a very strong indicator that there is not a market for the product. New Jersey gun shops may be forced to put a “smart” gun on their shelves, but the anti-gun zealots are more likely to see dust collecting rather than actual sales.

And while some might consider this new law an improvement, as it repeals the 2002 law that sought to require only “smart” guns be sold, don’t expect this to be the end of what anti-gun legislators will do to continue their ongoing war against gun owners in New Jersey.

Governor Murphy, after signing the new law, has already stated his desire that only “smart” guns be sold in New Jersey. Once somebody develops one that qualifies under the current law, regardless of how reliable it is, it can be placed on the approved-for-sale list. At that point, reviving the 2002 law would be the obvious next step.

Storage mandates and “smart” gun requirements will continue to be falsely promoted as safety measures in the never-ending war on law-abiding, responsible gun owners. But limiting the use of firearms by those facing assault by violent criminals, either because of storage requirements that delay access or technology that is subject to inopportune failure, is likely to lead to unintended, and sadly tragic, consequences.

Animal Legislative Update from Vanessa Gagne

From the desk of Vanessa Gagne:

January 16th, 2020

Please help oppose FL SB 1048, which would allow for an animal to have a court appointed attorney in an animal cruelty case - this would give animals the same rights as American people in the 6th amendment of our Constitution.  The passing of such a decision would have long lasting and complex ramifications for the differentiation between human and animal legal rights.  It needs to be made clear that under no circumstances is anyone advocating for animal welfare or abuse cases to be neglected however it must be done under existing rule of law.  The bill text may be read here.

I giochi PS5 annunciati all'evento Sony

Naughty Dog sarebbe invece al lavoro su uno spin-off multiplayer di The Last of Us.

The 1990's are alive and well!!! Barenaked Ladies have just rolled out the band's sixth "Last Summer On Earth Tour" -- with the 2020 edition featuring special guests the Gin Blossoms and Toad The Wet Sprocket. The bands kick off the 34-city jaunt on June 3rd at St. Augustine, Florida's Saint Augustine Amphitheatre and wrap things up seven weeks later on July 23rd Toronto's Budweiser Stage.

Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson told us the mindset of the band when it comes to touring has changed over the years because they now see performing as their job, which they need to work hard at: "We're trying to practice sustainable development within the band. I think the way a lot of us used to exist was to throw ourselves into the band and try and live our lives in the time off. And recently, I think what we've been trying to do is recognize the fact that we're in this band and we've got to work really hard and we have to live our lives while we do it."

Gon Blossoms guitarist Jesse Valenzuela explained that aside from the band members' move into middle age, little has changed for them when it comes to hitting the road: "Y'know what, it hasn't changed that much. There's a total lack of enthusiasm right before the show, and then someone says, 'Let's get this thing over with,' and then they go out and play really hard, as hard as they can. I don't know why, it's like they're saving their energy. And then after the show there's this horrible post-mortem and then there's this low-grade bickering, and then we go back to the hotel and then the guys adjourn to somebody's room and have a little party."
