Fernandinho own-goal costs Manchester City more points

Sun, 2020-01-19 04:13

LONDON: Pep Guardiola’s 49th birthday celebrations went flat as Fernandinho’s late own goal forced Manchester City to settle for a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, while Tottenham’s hopes of finishing in the top four were dented by a goalless draw at Watford on Saturday.

On a busy day of top-flight action, the pitch side VAR monitor was used in the Premier League for the first time at Norwich and Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Sheffield United.
It was the drama at the Etihad Stadium that took the spotlight as Fernandinho’s last-gasp blunder left Guardiola in no mood to party after City’s faint hopes of retaining the title suffered another hammer blow.
The champions trail Liverpool by 13 points ahead of the runaway leaders’ clash with rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
Palace won the corresponding fixture at the Etihad Stadium last season and the south Londoners took a shock lead in the 39th minute.
Cenk Tosun marked his first league start since his loan move from Everton with his maiden goal for the Eagles, the Turkish striker netting a close-range strike from Martin Kelly’s flick.
Sergio Aguero appeared to have turned the game on its head in the 82nd minute when the Argentine striker turned in Gabriel Jesus’ cross for his 250th goal in 360 games for the club.
Aguero put City ahead in the 87th minute with a typically predatory header from Benjamin Mendy’s cross. But there was a sting in the tale for Guardiola as Fernandinho turned Wilfried Zaha’s cross into his own net in the 90th minute to end second-placed City’s run of three successive league wins.
At Vicarage Road, Troy Deeney’s 70th-minute spot kick was saved by Paulo Gazzaniga before Tottenham’s Erik Lamela was denied a last-gasp winner by Ignacio Pussetto’s goal-line clearance.
With England captain Harry Kane sidelined after hamstring surgery, Tottenham have gone three league games without scoring.
Jose Mourinho’s side are without a win in four league matches since Dec. 26 and sit eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who visit Newcastle in Saturday’s late game.
Toothless Tottenham thought they had stolen the points in stoppage time when Lamela flicked Serge Aurier’s cross toward the goal, but Watford’s new signing Pussetto cleared off the line, with goal line technology showing just 10.04mm of the ball had not gone over.
“I know it was only a couple of millimeters but goal line technology does not make mistakes like VAR. We have to accept it was not a goal,” Mourinho said.
Arsenal are 10 points adrift of the top four after the Blades continued their superb first season back in the Premier League.
Gabriel Martinelli broke the deadlock in first half stoppage time at the Emirates Stadium.
The 18-year-old Brazilian striker claimed his ninth goal of the season with a clinical finish from Bukayo Saka’s cross.
But Chris Wilder’s side snatched an 83rd-minute equalizer when John Fleck lashed home after Arsenal failed to clear.
Bottom of the table Norwich’s vital 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Bournemouth saw the pitch side monitor finally used to decide a red card call.
Norwich took the lead when Bournemouth defender Steve Cook was sent off after flinging himself across the goal to block Teemu Pukki’s shot with his hand.
Pukki fired home the resulting penalty in the 33rd minute, but the Canaries had to survive a tense finish after Ben Godfrey was sent off in the 76th minute.

Newcastle’s Florian Lejeune strikes twice to grab dramatic draw at Everton

Carlo Ancelotti clasped his hands to his chest in sheer disbelief. He was not alone. The Everton manager has inherited a team with a reputation for throwing points away but this was a spectacular and staggering implosion even by their standards. Two goals up in the 94th minute, in complete control against a Newcastle team devoid of attacking intent or options, yet held to a draw thanks to two goals in the final seconds from Florian Lejeune.

Steve Bruce cavorted on to the pitch in celebration of the heist before offering a sheepish handshake to his counterpart. “I lost the final of the Champions League after being 3-0 up,” the former Milan manager said. “So it can happen sometimes.” It seems to happen to Everton frequently.

Fully-funded PhD Studentship: Climate of the past interglacials in Central Europe | United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland | Full time

Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Speleothems such as stalagmites and flowstones are terrestrial environmental archives that can be dated precisely and accurately using uranium series techniques, and can be analysed at very high temporal resolution. This project aims to produce a composite multi-proxy record of environmental change during the last several Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles in Central Europe (including the western Black Sea shore) by studying cave speleothems in this region. Past interglacials can be used as analogues of climate conditions similar or warmer than today’s that were not affected by anthropogenic activities. However, recent compilations of data available for the past interglacial periods have highlighted the lack of well-dated and high-resolution terrestrial climate records, and the difficulty in assessing intra-interglacial climate variability. Similarly, it is difficult to establish the precise timing of interglacial inception and termination in the terrestrial realm. You will work to produce new records of Pleistocene interglacial climate changes in Central Europe, contribute to a greater understanding of the response of the climate system to external forcing under different boundary conditions, give insights into internal climate variability on sub-millennial timescales, and assess the presence of leads/lags in the climate system. These new records can be used to test the ability of coupled general circulation models to simulate the climate in a range of conditions similar or warmer than today’s, and therefore improve our ability to simulate climate variability in the next centuries and millennia. The project requires the use of a combination of stable isotopes, trace elements, and U-Th dating together with high-resolution speleothem micromilling. By interacting with climate modellers you can produce valuable data-model comparisons and investigate the mechanistic links between climate forcing and terrestrial responses. Training instate-of-the-art geochemical analyses, time series analyses, fieldwork skills, and working with large data sets will be provided.

Fully funded PhD studentship: Exploring human-climate interactions in the wider Caucasus region during the Mid-to-Late Holocene | United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland | Full time

Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

The Caucasus Mountains and neighbouring Anatolia are thought to be one of the key localities in the development of modern human societies. Some of the earliest evidence for farming, metallurgy and conjectural achievement leading to the establishment of complex societies has been discovered in this region. However, our understanding of the region’s socio-economic development is based upon disparate archaeological finds, which are often poorly dated. One of the best ways to fill these gaps is to use natural archives of anthropogenic pollution to reconstruct the history of the region’s technological development. The project will focus on the reconstruction of metallurgical technology in the region via the analysis of heavy metal concentrations and lead isotopes. In addition, the interplay between societal development and climatic change in the region is also uncertain. This is largely due to the lack of high-resolution, multi-proxy studies of palaeoclimate in the region. As such, the second aim of the project will be to reconstruct the region’s climate, using a range of elemental and isotopic methods including Sr and Nd isotopes to investigate changing levels and sources of dust, a proxy for droughts. This project will be multi-disciplinary, providing the opportunity to work with geochemists, archaeologists and climate scientists. The project will be linked to ongoing work into the history of eastern European societal development being carried out by Dr Jack Longman (University of Oxford) and Dr Daniel Veres (Romanian Academy) who will be co-supervisors. Excellent opportunities will be available for research training on geochemical analysis (elemental and isotopic) and data analysis.

City, Arsenal, Chelsea y Tottenham dejan ir puntos

Largely written in Cornwall and recorded out in the US alongside Grammy Award winning producer John Congleton (St. Vincent/Sharon Van Etten/War on Drugs), Bombay Bicycle Club have continued to grow, develop and evolve since the release of their debut album, “I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose”, back in 2009. Rarely in recent years has there been a British guitar band who have the craft and ability to avoid categorization whilst uniting hundreds of thousands of fans across the globe. With an innate ear for melody and invention, the four-piece are a very welcome return to the fold just as British guitar music makes a timely renaissance.

Bombay Bicycle Club welcome the new album’s release with a full tour of the UK in later this month and into February. The run includes two nights at London’s Alexandra Palace, with many of those shows long since sold out and with only a handful of tickets left at the remaining dates. They've also announced a North American tour for the spring, with more dates being added soon. A busy Summer festival season is almost inevitable.

Predicting Chelsea's Starting XI for Arsenal Clash on Tuesday

Chelsea face Arsenal on Tuesday night, with both teams in the midst of some decidedly mixed form. Nevertheless, this London derby should be no less hotly anticipated. Frank Lampard will have had to pick his side up quickly from a disappointing 1-0 loss to Newcastle and move swiftly on to preparing for the visit of the Gunners. Isaac Hayden's 94th-minute winner will have been a bitter pill to swallow for Lampard but he would have been comforted by the fact Manchester United (yet again) failed...

EFE

Frank Lampard suggests Chelsea could be interested in striker Edinson Cavani

Frank Lampard has refused to rule out Chelsea making a move for wantaway Paris St Germain striker Edinson Cavani. Uruguay international Cavani has handed in an official transfer request, with Atletico Madrid waiting in the wings to recruit the 32-year-old. Chelsea are able to make January signings after their two-window FIFA transfer ban was lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and Lampard has not dampened down any links to Cavani. Asked whether he had any interest in the player, Lampard said: “He’s a great player; I played against him and I always loved his mentality and attitude, and obviously his goalscoring record speaks for itself. “I’m not absolutely aware of what the situation is, so we’ll see. He’s an experienced player, but so are many other players out there. “I think we are young, and we know about the transitions. The idea of bringing in experience is something I’m certainly not absolutely looking away from. “Because sometimes the young players need a little bit of help, and if that’s the case then that may help us.” Lampard starts with an update on Reece James, who has an injury to the back of his knee area. It's not as bad as first feared and he is in contention for tomorrow's game. Marcos Alonso is fit again and will be in the squad. #CHEARS — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) January 20, 2020 Sporting director Leonardo confirmed Cavani’s transfer request on Sunday, with the 116-cap forward’s availability likely to spark a transfer scramble across Europe. Cavani has struck just three goals in 13 appearances in all competitions for PSG, but his pedigree and experience could offer Chelsea a strong alternative to in-form England striker Tammy Abraham. Chelsea bossed possession and territory at Newcastle but ended up losing 1-0 in Saturday’s Premier League clash, leaving Lampard again frustrated by his side’s lacklustre finishing. But the former England midfielder insisted drawing another blank in front of goal does not quicken the Blues’ need for new recruits. The Blues are forced into a second substitution as @reecejames_24 hobbles off and is replaced by @emersonpalmieri. Let's hope it's not a serious one… ⚫️ 0-0 🔵 [75'] #NEWCHE — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) January 18, 2020 Reece James is a doubt for Tuesday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge after sustaining a knee problem at Newcastle. But Lampard revealed the young full-back has avoided any serious injury. “He’s got an injury to the back of his knee area, but it’s not as bad as it could have been or we maybe first thought,” said Lampard. “He’s in contention for tomorrow but it will be a tight call to see how it settles down in the next 24 hours.” Asked if he had feared the worst when James picked up the issue at St James’ Park, Lampard added: “Yeah, a little bit, because he had injuries at the start of the season. But now it seems it’s not as bad as it could have been. “I won’t absolutely count my chickens but hopefully he’ll be okay for tomorrow, and if not, then the weekend.”
