Highlights from the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive: Archiving Filipino American Music in Los Angeles (AFAMILA)

Cache

In October 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate passed resolutions--House Resolution 780 and Senate Resolution 298--officially recognizing October as Filipino American History Month.  "Recognizes the celebration of Filipino American History Month as a study of the advancement of Filipino Americans and as a time to renew efforts toward the examination of history and culture in order to provide an opportunity for all people in the United States to learn more about Filipino Americans and their historic contributions to the Nation."

In honor of Filipino American History Month, I thought I would highlight the Archive collection Archiving Filipino American Music in Los Angeles (AFAMILA).  AFAMILA was a yearlong archiving and documentation project by the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive and community partner Kayamanan Ng Lahi.  Support for the project was provided by a UCLA in LA grant from the UCLA Center for Community Partnerships, 2003-2004.  The finding aid for the collection is on the Online Archive of California, here.

Jesse Ruskin wrote about the project in volume 11 (2006) of Pacific Review of Ethnomusicology (now Ethnomusicology Review), "Collecting and Connecting: Archiving Filipino American Music in Los Angeles."  To quote the abstract, "Scholars have recently reconceptualized the archive not only as a repository of knowledge, but also as an active producer and arbiter of knowledge. The study of archives, from this perspective, must attend to processes as well as products. This paper examines UCLA’s Archiving Filipino American Music in Los Angeles (AFAMILA) project as a case study of collaborative archiving, from the perspective that both methodology, the strategies and practices of collecting, and musical content, the sounds collected, determine the meaning of music archives. Furthermore, the study seeks to demonstrate how the collaborative approach, with its emphasis on dialogue and exchange, subverts the discourses of power that have historically shaped music archiving."

The AFAMILA recordings are now available as part of the California Light and Sound Collection on the Internet Archive.  California Light and Sound is a project of the California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP).  You can, of course, always browse the Ethnomusicology Archive channel.

Elder Cook Offers Hope to Those in the Philippines as Volcano Erupts

    Cache

This is the first time in 43 years the volcano has erupted. Church members in the greater Manila area, in the cities of Lipa, Tanauan, Balayan, and Agoncillo are gathering in local meetinghouses during the eruption.Elder Quentin L. Cook offered the prayers and faith of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to those in the Philippines impacted by the Taal Volcano—which is spewing a large plume of ash, steam, and rocks up to nine miles in the sky and posing serious threats to residents. Elder Cook gathers with a group of people at a Church meeting that is being used as a shelter for volcano evacuees in the Batangas Stake Center in the Philippines, Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and his wife, Mary, greet Latter-day Saints at the Mandaluyong Philippines Stake Center in Manila, Sunday, January 12, 2020.Due to the disaster, Elder Cook’s Monday appointments were postponed.Elder Cook arrived in the Philippines Saturday with his wife, Sister Mary Cook, to spend a week ministering to Church members and leaders, and to meet with top religious leaders, members of the media, government officials, and humanitarian partners and recipients.Government officials have issued a level 4 alert (5 is the highest level), meaning moderate volcanic ash is threatening Manila—the nation’s capital city, which has a population of 21 million.Speaking Sunday evening at a member devotional in the Mandaluyong area, Elder Cook praised the resilience of Filipinos in the face of frequent disasters.“I know that there are a lot of trials and hardships,” he said. “The Filipinos have always faced those in such a glorious way. I was here not too long after Mount Pinatubo [1991] had blown up and almost a million people had to leave their homes. But there is something about Filipinos that even when bad things happen, they rally, and they lift their spirits and they smile and they go forward.” Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Twelve Apostles speaks in Manila, Philippines, Saturday, January 11, 2020.All missionaries in the impacted area are safe and have been relocated or are staying in their homes. Meeting with prominent Manila-area interfaith leaders at a luncheon at the Philippine Area Office on Monday, January 13, Elder Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles “expressed our concern as a Church over the Taal [Volcano]. We’re concerned about everybody that’s affected, and we hope that we can contribute to anything that’s necessary to bless all faiths.” For the first time in 43 years, the Taal Volcano erupts about 35 miles south of Manilla, Philippines, on Sunday, January 12, 2019.He blessed them with “the assurance of the Savior’s Atonement, which gives peace regardless of what we are faced with.” A motorcycle and wind kick up volcanic ash in Lemery, Philippines, on Wednesday, January 15, following the eruption on the Taal Volcano January 12.

Copernicus EMS monitors impact of eruption of volcano Taal in Philippinesadmin Thu, 23/01/2020 - 11:38

In the early hours of 12 January 2020, a phreatomagmatic eruption began at Taal volcano (70 km south of Manila, Philippines), emitting a huge 14 km-high ash plume. The ash fallout has been recorded in several locations, including the capital Manila 100 km away. On 13 January, a weak flow of lava began oozing over the brime of the volcano. Subsequently, authorities of the surrounding province, Batangas, declared a state of calamity triggering the mass evacuation of residents within a 14 km radius of the volcano.

According to media reports, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that more than 450,000 people live within the 14 km danger zone of the Taal volcano and more than 25,000 people had sought shelter in temporary evacuation centres. Seven cities have experienced power outages and three roads have been closed.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on 15 January said that the volcano remains at alert level four out of a possible five, meaning an explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.

On 13 January the Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping module was activated by the European Commission’s DG ECHO for mapping areas affected by ashfall close to the volcano. While waiting for optimal data, a reference product was produced using a pre-event image. The reference product provided updated information mainly on the settlements and transport infrastructure, to help users in their crisis management tasks.

The following day, on 14 January, a First Estimate Product (FEP) was published using optical imagery acquired by the Pléiades-1A satellite. While the first available image used for the FEP covered 126.3 km² around the volcano, the one used for the delineation (DEL) product (released on 16 January) covered a larger area (1065.51 km²) in which ash deposit was visible over numerous settlements. The DEL product shows that an area of 15,753 ha (157.5 km²) has been covered by ash deposits and 284,818 people have been affected by this event.

Both images used for the FEP and the DEL products were provided by the International Charter Space & Major Disasters.

    10 for 2020 | A Little Life Update

    Cache

My 2020 is off to a slow start, but it's okay. It's actually a good contrast from the rush that the end of 2019 has brought us, and right now, I appreciate the rest and time off this new year (and new decade) brings.

Some updates! From #40 last 2018, for 2019 my blog landed at #64 at the Feedspot Top 100 Philippines Blogs And Websites To Follow.. aigoo! It's time to get motivated again, and work harder this year. I have been slacking not only in my blog but also on my other platforms like Instagram, but then again, it's okay! 2019 has been a transition year for most of us in the community: Will I continue my blog? Will I pursue Vlogging? How will I balance filming an IG Story and clips for a potential Youtube post??? While taking pictures!?

Also, according to Feedspot, my site posts an average of 2 blog entries in a week, while the #1 spot (When In Manila) posts 10x PER DAY! 😂 My plan is to write more this year, at least doubling my efforts from last year, maybe 4-5 blogs per week is a good target! If you have blog ideas or stuff you will want me to talk about, feel free to comment them below!

Speaking of targets, since January feels like a "trial period" for all of us, I think it's the perfect month to align as well as start pursuing new goals--or even old ones I've been putting off. And so....

Here are my 10 for 2020:
I was supposed to make 20 goals but ang dami pala, haha! Let's make it more focused and simpler this year, but still challenging.

    1) Health is Wealth. I am turning 34 this month, and have to reconsider my food choices, fitness life and even my sleeping schedule (kahit na Kdrama is life, haha). Since January 2, I've been going to the gym every other day, but just last Wednesday I injured myself by rushing the back machine--resulting to lower back strains huhu! Now I have to rest for a few days but planning to go back again tomorrow to at least have cardio time.

    2) Watch ASTRO and BTS Live.

    3) Go to a country I haven't been to.

    4) Shake up my wardrobe! I've been holding an online closet sale since last week to save up for my birthday trip. Aside from earning extra money and disposing clothes that does not "spark joy" na, it also brings extra space in my closet for new pieces that will fit my current style (yet to be discovered hehe).

    5) As mentioned earlier, be more active again in my blog. Bring back the 2017-2018 Anagon blogger!

    6) Personal Project: Travel in Korea for a month. And record daily activities in vlogging format.

    7) Personal Project: Attend to at least 5 random classes and workshops (art, cooking, etc). Last year I think I only attended 2: 1 month Korean language class, and a one day cooking class at the Vegetarian Kitchen in QC.

    8) Be more financial literate (to make my mom and dad happy, haha!). I already have insurances but I want to be more consistent in that, and learn even more about the stock market. Also: Less gastos, more ipon!

    9) Be more attentive with the state of my mental health. Focus on what will make me happy, and not be afraid to say no. Maybe keep a daily journal again?

    10) Start a long-term business

In short, I just want to be healthy in all ways, to have a purpose for my social media presence and not just post because I am pressured to, to have a quality and loving community--and create something of value to people who choose to follow me, and to be stable financially so I can do more and be more for my family.

    How's 2020 treating you so far? ❤

Smittevernforsker: Munnbind hjelper ikke mot dødelig virus

    Cache
I et verst tenkelig scenario anslår 9700 smittetilfeller, skriver The Telegraph.

    Taal volcano blanketed by ash

    Cache
    Image:

The Philippines’ Taal volcano erupted on 12 January 2020 – spewing an ash plume approximately 15 km high and forcing large-scale evacuations in the nearby area.

This almost cloud-free image was captured today 23 January at 02:20 GMT (10:20 local time) by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, and shows the island, in the centre of the image, completely covered in a thick layer of ash.

This optical image has also been processed using the mission’s short-wave infrared band to show the ongoing activity in the crater, visible in bright red. Ash blown by strong winds can be seen in Agoncillo, visible southwest of the Taal volcano. Ash has also been recorded in other areas of the Batangas province, as well as Manila and Quezon.

According to The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology bulletin published today, sulphur dioxide emissions were measured at an average of around 140 tonnes. The Taal volcano still remains on alert level four, meaning an explosive eruption is possible in the coming hours or days. The highest alert level is five which indicates an eruption is taking place.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, over 50 000 people have been affected so far. In response to the eruption, the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service was activated. The service uses satellite observations to help civil protection authorities and, in cases of disaster, the international humanitarian community, respond to emergencies.

Spain declares climate emergency, to send climate legislation to parliament for approval

    Cache
    Source: www.firstpost.com - Tuesday, January 21, 2020
Spain’s new government declared a national climate emergency on Tuesday, taking a formal first step toward enacting ambitious measures to fight climate change. The declaration approved by the Cabinet says the left-of-centre Socialist government will send to parliament within 100 days its proposed climate legislation. The targets coincide with those of the European Union , including a reduction of net carbon emissions to zero by 2050. Spain’s coalition government wants up to 95 percent of the Mediterranean country’s electricity to come from renewable sources by 2040. The plan also foresees eliminating pollution by buses and trucks and making farming carbon neutral. Details of the plan are to be made public when the proposed legislation is sent to parliament for approval. More than two dozen countries and scores of local and regional authorities have declared a climate emergency in recent years. Scientists say the decade that just ended was by far the hottest ever measured on Earth, capped off by the second-warmest year on record. Also Tuesday, young climate activists including Greta Thunberg told the elites gathered at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland they are not doing enough to deal with the climate emergency and warned them that time was running out.

Pelatih Ungkap 2 Peningkatan yang Bikin Anthony Ginting Juarai Indonesia Masters

    Cache

Jakarta Pelatih tunggal putra Persantuan Bulu Tangkis Seluruh Indonesia (PBSI), Hendry Saputra, mengatakan keberhasilan Anthony Sinisuka Ginting memenangkan Daihatsu Indonesia Masters 2020 tak lepas dari dua faktor utama.

The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago in Southeast Asia located between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The nation is made up of more than 7,641 islands, the largest of which is Luzon. Both the Manila, the capital, and Quezon City, the most populous city, are located on Luzon.

The population of the Philippines is extremely ethnically diverse, consisting of nearly 100 culturally and linguistically distinct ethnic groups. Of these, the largest are the Tagalog of Luzon and the Cebuano of the Visayan Islands.

The Spanish colonized the islands in the 16th century and they remained under Spanish rule for 333 years. The Philippines’s name comes from this time period, after Spanish King Philip II. Spanish colonialism also left a legacy of Roman Catholicism, which most of the population continues to practice. After the Spanish-American War, the U.S. demanded the cession of the Philippines to the U.S. in the Treaty of Parish of 1898. The Philippines were also occupied by Japan during World War II. Filipino nationalists resisted Spanish, American and Japanese rule. The Philippines was officially recognized by the U.S. as independent through the Treaty of Manila of 1946.

The national flag was adopted after the 1898 overthrow of Spanish authority. The white triangle symbolizes liberty, the blue tripe symbolizes willingness sacrifice oneself for freedom, and the white stripe symbolizes courage. The golden sun and three golden stars symbolize the Philippines three man areas—Luzon, Visayan, and Mindanao. The eight sun rays represent the provinces where the original anti-Spanish revolts broke out.

When the U.S. suppressed the first republic, they outlawed this flag. After the Japanese took over, they also forbade the flag at first. They officially recognized it on October 14, 1943 when they declared a Japanese-controlled second republic. Filipinos opposed to Japanese rule displayed the flag upside down in protest.

Today, The Philippines is the world’s 13th most populous country, with 108 million people. The nation’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The main products include sugarcane, rice, coconuts, bananas, corn, and pineapples.

The Philippines remains culturally diverse, which is apparent in the country’s rich music, literature, and arts. This diversity is also represented by the variety of regional festivals, such as the Silmugi Festival (held in honor of Saint Sebastian), the Sinulog Festival (held in honor of Santo Nino de Cebu), and the Kuraldal Festival (held in honor of Saint Lucy). Boxing, basketball, and Arnis, a type of martial arts, are amongst the most popular sports in the Philippines.

Pesta Kostum Tak Biasa Pengungsi Letusan Gunung Taal Filipina Manfaatkan Pakaian Sumbangan
