How the economy could make or break Trump in 2020

Cache
Story 360963435

President Donald Trump launches into the fourth year of his presidency this week with some strong economic numbers to support his case for reelection: Unemployment is low, job growth remains solid, wages are rising and the stock market is soaring.

But the Trump economy features a soft underbelly that Democrats are preparing to exploit and — depending how the numbers tilt this year — could wind up undermining the president’s best argument for four more years.

Manufacturing remains in recession. Economies in some swing states lag the stronger national numbers. Businesses are preserving cash instead of deploying it for expansion. And the president has not delivered the “YUGE“ growth numbers he promised on the campaign trail.

As year four unfolds, several key numbers and trends will determine just how much the economy will help Trump overcome impeachment, low approval ratings and serious shortcomings with women and minority voters.

“The stock market he’s got. Wages he’s got. The consumer side of the economy is working really well,” said Gary Cohn, Trump’s first National Economic Council director. “The soft underbelly is [that] capital expenditure is not there.“

“He stood there in Pennsylvania and talked about bringing steel mills back and what’s happened is we’ve cut steel lines,” Cohn said. “We gave companies a big tax cut then took it away with tariffs. These are the pieces that are missing. I think he could have had it all. And he doesn’t have it all.”

Here’s a guide to some of the key economic trends and numbers in Trump’s fourth year that could help determine if he survives the rest of the chaos that swirls around his presidency each day.

Manufacturing

U.S. manufacturing fell into recession for all of 2019, according to data from the Federal Reserve, with industrial production dropping 1.3 percent for the year — a sore spot for a president who promised his tough approach to trade would return robust factory growth to the American heartland. Industrial production dropped 0.3 percent in December alone.

The worst case scenario for Trump on this front is that approval of the new NAFTA deal and a truce in the tariff battle with China fail to revive the manufacturing sector. Factories showed some positive signs early last year only to fall back again, hit by a strike at GM and a big hit from Boeing halting production of its 737Max jets.

But there are at least some signals that the worst could be past.

Completing the first phase of the China trade deal “in theory ought to boost the manufacturing sector in the short term,” Pantheon Macroeconomics chief U.S. economist Ian Shepherdson said in a note to clients. China’s commitment to boost its purchases of U.S. factory goods by $33 billion relative to 2017, before the trade war began, amounts to a 1.5 percent increase in manufacturing.

That’s “not a macro game-changer, but not trivial, either,” he said. On the downside, much of the existing China tariffs remain in place, a continuing drag on manufacturing costs.

Key date to watch: Feb. 3. The next manufacturing report from the Institute for Supply Management comes out the first weekday in February. Can the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and the China deal help push the index back above 50, into expansion territory? That would be a big win for the White House, especially if it’s sustained and Trump can talk about real manufacturing growth.

Jobs and economic growth

Trump is on solid ground bragging about job creation under his watch, with the three-month average still close to 200,000 new jobs a month and unemployment at a historically low 3.5 percent. He has not, however, delivered year after year of economic growth above 4 percent — as he promised during the campaign and when touting the 2017 tax cut bill.

U.S. economic growth nearly hit 3 percent for 2018 after the tax bill unleashed a wave of initial corporate spending. But growth slowed again in 2019 as the trade war intensified and the rest of the world slowed down, with the fourth quarter not expected to exceed 2 percent.

Trump badly needs more robust GDP numbers to tout on the trail. And at least some of his more ardent economic supporters think he could get them. Residential construction spiked to a 13-year high in December and consumer spending remains strong.

New homes often come along with spending on other durable goods and can help drive up GDP even in the face of continuing trade pressure and other worries that could mount over the outcome of the election in the second half of the year.

“It’s highly likely that there’s very strong growth at least in the first half of the year that is sort of tempered later by threats over election uncertainty, which tend to slow things down a bit,” said conservative economist Kevin Hassett, who formerly served as chair of Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers. “Also, it’s worth noting that wages are growing faster for those without a college degree than with a college degree.” That, presumably, would help Trump among his blue-collar base.

Key dates to watch: July 30, when the initial estimate of second-quarter GDP is released. Most estimates for the first quarter are still around 2 percent. If Trump is going to get a 2020 bump in GDP that he can take into the heart of the campaign season, this is likely when it would come.

Oct. 2: This will be the final jobs report before Election Day. The numbers will be important all year, but the final reading of the campaign cycle will indicate whether the trends in job growth and low unemployment remain steady. If the numbers soften — as some economists expect — and unemployment is rising, it wouldn’t be deadly for Trump but it could deliver some nasty headlines and make his pitch to voters more difficult.

Swing-state jobs numbers

While the national jobs numbers look strong, that’s not entirely the case in some key swing states such as Pennsylvania where the unemployment rate is ticking up and hit 4.3 percent in November. Among the drivers: plant closings and threatened layoffs like those made by Allegheny Technologies, which said it could lay off at least 100 workers due to tariffs on imported steel used in making final products.

Unemployment in Michigan is also higher than the national average, at 4.0 percent. Swing-state Wisconsin is in better shape at just 3.3 percent. Ohio may only barely be a swing state anymore but it also boasts a jobless rate of 4.2 percent that has been rising for the last few months.

Ohio was also on track for a net job loss in 2019, the first time since the Great Recession, according to the Columbus Dispatch, which also called into question Trump’s claims of bringing automotive jobs to the state.

These numbers will likely only matter if a Democrat can go into these states and make the case that Trump has not actually improved economic matters much, if at all, despite his robust Make America Great Again claims.

“The question is whether Joe Biden or somebody can go in there and come up with something different and something better,“ Cohn said. “And frankly they’d start with most of the women and minorities in the world hating Trump and they’d have to add to that.”

Key dates to watch: Swing-state employment figures will come from monthly reports on job trends that lag behind the national figures. Moves in the wrong direction, especially in the Midwest, will create an opening for the eventual Democratic nominee as Election Day approaches.

Podcast459: Highlights from OETC 2018

This podcast features three different recordings from the 2018 Ohio Educational Technology Conference, which was held in Columbus, Ohio, February 12-14, 2018. The first is an interview with high school students who have learned how to create interactive games using Scratch software. They also have created DIY game controllers using the MakeyMakey and supplies like tin foil, cardboard, alligator clips, play dough, and bananas. The second interview is with high school senior Arthur Bodenschatz, who is part of the broadcast journalism team in North Canton City Schools, Ohio. Arthur and his classmates use an amazing “mobile storyteller” converted RV to conduct professional quality interviews at events like the Ohio educational technology conference. The third interview is Arthur's interview of me at OETC, in which he asked me about my reasons for becoming a teacher and technology director, the pace of technological change in our society, and a few other topics. Two of these three recordings are also available as videos on YouTube and Vimeo, which are linked in the podcast shownotes. In addition to these three recordings, a few reflections on some additional highlights of OETC 2018 are included. These focus on Eric Curts' (@ericcurts) 3 hour workshop "Write Right with Google Tools: Improving Writing in all Subjects," Todd Beard's (@teacherbeard) session on Minecraft for Education, and Apple Education's workshop on updates to iOS 11. Please refer to the podcast shownotes for links to referenced resources, as well as a raft of Wes' tweets from OETC 2018 sharing additional tips and links from sessions. (Since Storify is going offline and doesn't support the creation of new Twitter archives, this blog post will hopefully serve that function to archive these learning takeaways.

Bahamian thespian reprises US history in dramatic civil rights adapted musical

See this story at CaribbeanLifeNews.com.

By Vinette K. Pryce

Last year Hurricane Dorian visited and some might say took up temporary residence over islands in the Bahamas. The storm wreaked havoc on the island of Abacos lingering longer than weather forecasters predicted.

And while that devastation established another indelible historic reference to the tourism-friendly destination most acclaimed for spawning Sidney Poitier, Hollywood’s first Black actor to win an Academy award in the best actor category, another distinguished citizen stormed his way into theater circles and is already adding notation to the might of the Caribbean haven.

Jonathan Farrington is the name and since arriving to these shores has been successfully pounding the pavements in a quest to conquer his goal of winning against all odds.

He was not in the Caribbean when Dorian struck but despite a hectic schedule, volunteered time and effort with the Bahamas Consulate to assist with coordinating aid to nationals.

Over this past weekend, Farrington endeared students, teachers, parents and patrons of the theater to five performances in Harlem at the Theater at Riverside Church.

Fifth graders from Manhattan School For Children were privileged to attend the first Friday matinee performance Farrington and an ensemble cast delivered in a production titled: “Turning 15 On the Road To Freedom.”

It was no coincidence that the timely showcases coincided with the 91st anniversary birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The dramatic musical is based on a real-life historical experience of Lynda Blackmon, a native of Alabama who marched from Selma to Montgomery with the revered Civil Rights leader when she was 15 years old.

The nostalgic story told in her own words from adaptation of a book of the same name celebrates the victory of children who defied Jim Crow laws, a racist Gov. George Wallace and an army of white resistance to integration, voting rights for Blacks and equality of all races.

Blackmon’s role was as poignant and inspirational as that of Sweden’s Greta Thunberg whose mighty voice against ignorance to climate change endeared a global movement and even irked President Donald Trump, the most-known denier to the phenomenon.

That at age 69, Blackmon’s brave stance as a teenager against state laws and her fierce dedication to making America great is not of the magnitude of Thunberg’s effort may lie in the fact social media and the world wide web reaches more than the three dominant television outlets Americans relied.

Last weekend the child hero watched her life story in reprisal. She looked on with pride.

Blackmon smiled, applauded and reflected on the Aug. 6, 1965 date the Voting Rights Act was passed. She recalled her birthday on March 15, 1965 and she reminisced her 21st birthday when she was handed a card permitting her to vote.

Farrington was not even born then.

At that time his parents lived under colonial rule as part of the Commonwealth nations of the Caribbean.

Perhaps focused on the 300 years of British rule, America’s racism seemed of distant geographical or sociological concern to Caribbean nationals.

However, seeing and hearing millennial Farrington render “Mine Eyes have seen the Glory of the Coming of the Lord” one might ponder how the immigrant so convincingly executes the lyrics to a song many claim as the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

Passion, talent and relentless auditioning since graduating last year from the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts can be credited with refining his craft.

He won a scholarship to attend the illustrious academy and to cap his studies was named the 2019 recipient of the Lawrence Lagner Award for excellence in speech and theater.

Add that Nov. 2018 while a student Farrington won first place at the competitive Amateur Night contest at the Apollo Theater and there’s no denying that he is destined to achieving his goal of earning an equity card and will follow a path to excellence already paved by Bahamians — actors Esther Rolle and Calvin Lockhart, meteorologist Al Roker, singer Johnny Kemp and even the pop barkers named the Baha Men whose ”Who Let The Dogs Out” stirred international frenzy when their song commanded Billboard Magazine’s charting.

“Determination and courage inspired me,” Farrington said.

He said that his appreciation of gospel music, the church and admiration of legends such as Poitier keeps him motivated to audition for roles he seems to ace.

Of Poitier, he has met the actor’s nephew Jeffrey and admits to keeping a photo of the Oscar winner on his vision board.

Ironically like the superstar from Cat Island, Bahamas, Farrington was cast to portray a principal character in Lorraine Hansberry’s hit Broadway “A Raisin In The Sun.”

But Farrington is no dreamy-eyed dreamer, he recently released a single on iTunes called “Will U.”

Always vigilant at keeping his eye on the prize he has already scored gains portraying Bayard Rustin, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and among other roles currently portrays Jimmie Lee Jackson, who was murdered on the Bloody Sunday in Alabama when state troopers attacked marchers seeking justice.

Following last weekend’s Harlem outings, the production heads to New Brunswick, New Jersey, Baltimore, and Princess Ann, Maryland. Miami and Delray Beach, Florida, Morgantown, North Carolina, Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati, Ohio and Selma, Alabama.

Catch You On The Inside!

Every Whisky Drinker's Favourite Poet and His Night

Cache
The Burns Night celebration in Robert Burns’ honour is now traditionally held on his birthday, January 25th.

In honour of the Scottish National Bard, we have put together a list of the 7 most fun & quirky facts about Burns. Here goes…

1. “Productive” Member of Society

Robert Burns is said to have had quite a fondness for the ladies and was basically a rural Don Juan, fathering as many as 12 children by four different women during his relatively short life (he died at the age of 37).

His wife, Jean Armour gave birth to nine of his children, but only three survived infancy. His youngest child, son Maxwell meanwhile, was born on the day of his funeral.

2. Impressive Worldwide “Stature”

There are an enormous numbers of statues around the world dedicated to Robert Burns. In fact, there are so many, that not including statues dedicated to religious figures, he ranks third worldwide, right after Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus that is. Heavy hitters.

3. A Hitmaker He Was

Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the 3 most popular songs of all time in the English language, right after ‘Happy Birthday’ & ‘He’s a Jolly Good Fellow’. Good vibes.

4. Burns Almost Became A Rasta

Burns was so unhappy in his native land, that at one point he was on the verge of immigrating to, no you’ll never believe this, Jamaica of all places!

Photo: Flickr / cosmic_bandita

Just before his ship was to set sail though, he finally received the admiration and praise for his work that he had been seeking his entire life, which convinced him to stay in Scotland for good. Although one could say that Scotland’s victory was Jamaica’s loss.

Can you imagine what Burns’ poetry set to the beat of reggae music may have sounded like? Groovy.

5. Even Michael Jackson Was A Fan

Singer Michael Jackson was a huge fan of Robert Burns and recorded an album with David Gest setting the bard’s poems to music. Last year it was reported that Gest had offered the album of show tunes to the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayrshire.

It’s also claimed that Michael Jackson’s smash-hit Thriller was actually inspired by Burns’ Tam O’Shanter poem. Pop-tastic!

6. His Poetry Was Truly “Universal”

Nicholas Patrick - Photo: NASA/Robert Markowitz via CommonsBurns’ poems are actually really out of this world. In fact, British-born astronaut Nicholas Patrick carried a miniature book of the poet’s work into orbit with him in 2010, during a two-week space mission.

Burns’ poetry completed a 5.7 million mile trip, along with 217 orbits of Earth. Get out much?

7. Inspiration to Famous Figures

Robert Burns is believed to have been the inspiration for many famous figures and celebrities throughout history.

US president Abraham Lincoln had a lifelong admiration for the poet’s work and some claim the poems even helped him to win the American Civil War and to abolish slavery.

Burns’ work has also appeared in hundreds of films and television programmes, including ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, ‘When Harry met Sally’ and ‘Sex and the City’. Talk about leaving a mark.

As you formulate your plans for the Burns Night celebration, we have a few choice food and Whisky pairings for Burns Night that you can try.

New study spotlights historic slave rebellion in Dominican Republic | Bronx Free Press

Cache
By Gregg McQueen It was the uprising after Christmas. A group of enslaved African men rebelled against their masters on December 26, 1521 at a sugar plantation located in what is today San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. The African Blacks burned down a plantation owned by Diego Colón, the son of Christopher Columbus, killing and wounding numerous colonists. A new research paper, published by the Dominican Studies Institute (DSI) at the City University of New York (CUNY), details the little-known historical facts of the slave revolt – and its early presence in the Dominican Republic. “It was the earliest anti-slavery rebellion on record,” explained historian Anthony Stevens-Acevedo, who led the DSI study. “In response, the Spanish authorities issued laws to punish the rebels and prevent Black people from attempting to rise up again for their freedom,” he said. OH: A Superintendent Who Gets The Problem of EdChoice

Cache
Woodridge School District is located a bit north of Akron. The district is highly rated and has escaped the current Ohio school rating system with no low ratings. Which means they didn't have to speak out against the problems being created for districts across the state by the EdChoice program. But on their website, you'll find this message from their superintendent, who offers a clear an explanation of what's going wrong. I'm going to reprint the note in its entirety here:

A Message from Superintendent Davis:
January 15, 2020

When we become parents, we want to do whatever it takes to provide the very best for our children. We want them to have every opportunity to achieve, to realize their dreams, to be healthy and happy. As parents, we make many important decisions as our children grow, decisions that will have long, lasting impacts on them as they mature. Choosing what school(s) our children will attend is one of the most important decisions we will make as parents. In Ohio, we have many options when it comes to schooling. Some are clearly better than others. There are private schools, parochial schools, charter schools but we believe the best option for families is the local public school system in any community.

Historically, some of the school choice options in Ohio have included costs for families. If you chose a private school, a religious school or some other non-public option, you typically paid tuition to enroll. Private and parochial schools have historically been selective, admitting only those students that fit their defined profile. Public schools, supported by property taxes, however, take ALL resident students without tuition, a free public education. In recent years, in an attempt to expand choice and, in the opinion of many, attempt to destroy the traditional public school districts in our state, legislators have created special programs designed to divert local property tax dollars from the public schools to fund charter and non-public, religious and private schools. Such programs are known as “scholarship” or “voucher” programs.

Looking for a way to determine eligibility for vouchers and scholarships, the legislature decided to use the state’s flawed report card system to justify the siphoning of funds from local school districts. If the state determines your school to be “failing” (as determined by the local report card that the legislators themselves have admitted to be flawed), students residing in your school’s attendance area are eligible to obtain a voucher to attend elsewhere. For high schools, the state will “deduct” $6000 from the eligible district’s funding to pay for a voucher. For elementary schools, they take $4650. These funds, taken from local district budgets is NOT reimbursed. It is taken.

This year, the Woodridge Local School District has NO schools that are voucher eligible. Our district has no “failing schools”. We do, however, recognize that the state’s flawed accountability system could, in future years, cause us to have eligible schools. This year, however, we will not lose any funds to the EdChoice Voucher program. Regardless, it is important to consider what would be happening if we were eligible. Like some other districts nearby, we receive so little in state funding that a voucher program could result in a dramatic loss of LOCAL funds. This year, we receive roughly $957 per pupil from the state of Ohio. If we were voucher eligible and lost just one high school aged student through the voucher program, the state would take $6000 from our budget for that child and send it to the private school. Since we only get $957 per pupil from Columbus, the state would stop payment on that for this student and then they would have to dip into our LOCAL TAX REVENUES to the tune of $5043 to get the full amount “due” the private school. When voters go to the polls to consider local property tax levies for the school district, I do not believe that any of them do so thinking that ANY of the funds being approved will be taken from the district to support individual students attending private or parochial schools. I cannot envision a way that such a system is constitutional. That state is taking money that voters earmarked for a specific purpose and using it for something far different.

As currently written, the rules would make vouchers available in eligible districts for students who NEVER even attended school in the district. For example, a student who would be coming for kindergarten, never having attended school in the district, would be eligible for a voucher IF the school were eligible. In this case, $4650 would be taken from the district to pay for that child to attend a private school with NO reimbursement from the state or the family for a student that was never enrolled in the district to begin with. Similarly, students that are already enrolled in a private school would suddenly become eligible for a voucher even if they had never attended school in that public district at all.

There is so much that the legislature failed to consider when setting up this system. The private schools receiving voucher funding are NOT subject to the same mandates, rules and requirements as the public schools that are losing this funding. Unlike public school districts, these schools are not subject to public audit, public representation, uniform accounting, teacher licensure, public records rules, student testing requirements, or many other mandates that public schools are forced to follow. And then, many of us ask, should public funds be used to support religious schools at all?

The Ohio EdChoice Voucher Program is seriously flawed. To help the public better understand the issues, the documents that follow contain more specific information about the program AND suggested solutions. Produced by educational experts and leaders from across the state, this information is provided with the hope that local citizens will stand up to be heard. We urge you to contact your elected officials – the very people who put these provisions into law are the ones that can fix this. Below, you will find contact information for the Ohio House and Ohio Senate members who represent our district. Contact them and DEMAND that they act! The future of public education is at stake.

You can be assured that Superintendents, Treasurers and Board Members from all across Ohio are busy advocating for change. Boards are passing resolutions in opposition to The EdChoice Voucher Program. Press Conferences are being held across the state to voice concern and opposition. Meetings are being held with legislators to share concern and to offer ideas for common sense reform. Calls are being made. Together, we can and must ensure that the legislature acts THIS month before the voucher application process is set to begin on February 1, 2020. Join us. Add your voice to the cause. Read below for more information.
