Dr Lance Jennings: Virus spreads from China to US, fears for global pandemic

Cache
A man in Washington state has been diagnosed with the mysterious coronavirus virus, the first case confirmed in the United States since the illnesses first appeared in China last month and which has killed at least six people and sickened hundreds more in Asia, according to people familiar with the investigation.
The man is in stable condition. He arrived in the United States last week, before federal health officials began screening travellers from the central Chinese city of Wuhan at Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York's John F. Kennedy international airports.
The outbreak has grown rapidly in recent days, with authorities in China reporting cases in multiple cities. The World Health Organisation is meeting tomorrow to decide whether to declare the outbreak a public health emergency.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to announce details about the US case in an afternoon news conference.
In Australia, a Brisbane man was put into isolation after returning from a Chinese province with a respiratory illness.
Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said the Brisbane man is recovering at home but will undergo further tests for the new coronavirus, which has already proved deadly overseas.

A Queensland Health spokesman said the man has recently returned from Central China with a respiratory illness.
"Because the man travelled to Wuhan, Coronavirus is one of the conditions he is being tested for," he said. "The man will remain in isolation until his symptoms have resolved.
Face masks sold out and officials at airports and train stations checked passengers for fevers as China on Tuesday sought to control the outbreak of a new virus that has reached four other countries and territories and threatens to spread further during the Lunar New Year travel rush.
Anxiety grew both at home and abroad after Chinese government expert Zhong Nanshan confirmed fears on state television late Monday that the new type of coronavirus can spread from human to human.
Six people have died and 291 have been infected in China, the National Health Commission said Tuesday.
The stock prices of some companies that sell masks rose Tuesday, but markets fell in much of Asia as investors worried about the potential impact on tourism and the economy.
Concerned about a global outbreak similar to SARS, another coronavirus that spread from China to more than a dozen countries in 2002-2003, numerous nations have adopted screening measures for travelers from China, especially those arriving from Wuhan, the central city where the virus appears to have originated.
Guards at Wuhan's airport pointed electronic thermometers at travelers. Several online retailers were sold out of masks, which were being sold for more than 10 times their original price. Users of the popular Weibo social media platform urged others to wash their hands and stay home.
Outside the Wuhan Medical Treatment Center, where many of the coronavirus patients are receiving care, several workers were dressed in full-body biohazard suits, supplemented by goggles, masks and plastic wrapped around their shoes.
While many wore masks in Wuhan, streets were far from deserted and people appeared to be carrying on with their regular activities.
"I'm not that worried," said Helen Cao, a Wuhan resident who was shopping on a downtown avenue lined with stores and full of pedestrians. Like many in the city, she began wearing a mask after hearing Zhong's assessment of human-to-human transmission.
"Maybe people from other places are more concerned about our health, but (Wuhan) locals actually are continuing to eat, go out and take strolls, go clubbing at night," Cao said. "Everything's very normal, everyone's just wearing masks, nothing more."
Initial symptoms of the new coronavirus include fever, cough, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath.
The first cases late last...

Airlines and Airports React to Virus Outbreak in China

Cache
The threat of sick passengers has led to heightened screening measures of flights from Wuhan, China.
January 21, 2020, 5:05 PM

The recent outbreak of a flu-like virus in China is creating a ripple effect across global markets, sending shares tumbling as airlines and airports heighten passenger screening measures ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Hong Kong-listed shares of state-owned airlines China Eastern and China Southern plummeted 6.7 percent and 6.51 percent, respectively, on Tuesday while Cathay Pacific dropped 4.07 percent. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways (ANA) slipped to 2.97 percent and 2.16 percent, respectively, while Australian carrier Qantas fell 1.7 percent.

U.S. and European airline shares also saw declines on Tuesday as investors recalled the economic fallout from China's Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2002/2003, which killed nearly 800 people globally and led to a recession in Hong Kong. Delta Air Lines slid 5.2 percent, United Airlines lost 5.1 percent, and American Airlines dropped 3.8 percent. Meanwhile, Air France-KLM and Lufthansa each saw shares slip around 2 percent.

Chinese authorities on Tuesday confirmed the new coronavirus outbreak had killed six people in China’s central city of Wuhan, bringing the total number infected to nearly 300. By mid-afternoon Tuesday, the U.S. reported its first case of the virus, after a Washington state resident traveling back from Wuhan came down with the pneumonia-like illness. Authorities have also confirmed cases in Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea.

Considered one of the largest human migration events in the world, scores of Chinese travelers will take to the skies this Saturday for Lunar New Year, igniting concerns over a global pandemic. While public health officials have yet to advise on travel and trade restrictions, the World Health Organization (WHO) will convene on Wednesday to determine whether to declare a global health emergency. The international agency applied an emergency designation last year, following an Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo.

Fearing worldwide disruption, airlines and airports have increased screening of passengers traveling from high-risk areas. Scores of airports in Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Thailand, have enacted a string of measures ranging from thermal screening to imposing a health declaration form system. Countries sharing borders with China, including Vietnam, have also tightened security checks given the high volume of cross-border flows. Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific is allowing cabin crew to wear face masks on routes to mainland China but has yet to extend that permission to international flights.

Farther afield, Australia, Italy, Canada, and the U.S. have all introduced screening measures for passengers arriving from Wuhan. Australian health authorities confirmed on Tuesday that a Brisbane man had been tested for the virus but was later released.

Wuhan virus continues to spread

Cache
A case of the deadly coronavirus has been diagnosed for the first time in the United States. It's the first time a case of the virus has been found outside Asia and was detected in a passenger from China who arrived in Seattle. In Australia a man in Brisbane who had visited Wuhan was being checked for the virus, but is now no longer in quarantine. The Ministry of Health says the current risk to New Zealand from the deadly coronavirus is low but is awaiting further advice from the World Health Organisation. The virus - which originated in Wuhan - has killed six people and infected more than 300 people. Earlier Director of Public Health Dr Caroline McElnay said there are no direct flights from Wuhan to New Zealand, but the Ministry of Health is keeping an eye on the situation in Australia. Professor Michael Baker is a Medical Epidemiologist at the University of Otago and speaks to Philippa Tolley.

Wuhan virus spreading quickly

Cache
China is scaling up its efforts to contain a deadly new virus as millions of Chinese prepare to travel at home and overseas for the Lunar New Year holiday. Six people have died in the central Chinese city of Wuhan from the new type of coronavirus, and the number of people infected has jumped to more than 300. The World Health Organisation is warning more cases of the virus should be expected in other parts of China, and possibly other countries, in coming days. Wuhan has put in place draconian measures to try to stop the spread of the disease. Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and airports in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York are screening passengers from Wuhan. Yesterday Australia became the latest country to put screening in place. Australia's medical officer of health, Brendan Murphy, says the three flights a week that arrive in Sydney from Wuhan will be checked. One Australian man in Brisbane who has visited Wuhan is being checked for the virus, but is now no longer in quarantine. China's leaders have warned officials there not to cover up the spread of the virus, saying anyone who concealed new cases would "be nailed on the pillar of shame for eternity". Hong Kong doctors have also told people to be honest about any illness. Later today the World Health Organisation will decide whether to declare an international public health emergency over the virus. Professor Kurt Krause from the University of Otago says the memory of the deadly SARS outbreak is behind the caution.

Defending runner-up Kvitova may have extra challenge in Melbourne

Cache

Petra Kvitova begins her 2020 Australian Open campaign against countrywoman Katerina Siniakova, and--if she wins that--she will face either Paula Badosa or qualifier Johanna Larsson. The Kvitova quarter features such potentially dangerous opponents as Madison Keys, Julia Goerges, Petra Martic, Maria Sakkari, and--most notable--world number 1 Ash Barty.

There is plenty of work to be done for the 7th seed. But beyond the challenge of knocking out really good opponents, Kvitova--who has asthma and who, in the past, was vulnerable to getting respiratory infections--will also have to deal with a Melbourne whose air quality has recently been rated as "hazardous" because of the Australian bush fires. This is, of course, a potential danger for all players, but especially for those, like Kvitova, who are already vulnerable.

The Czech star said a couple of years ago that her asthma is now under much better management, a fact which appears obvious to observers. But the air in Melbourne could still be a special danger for her. Kvitova has also been bothered by a sore arm for several months, but that issue appeared to have been resolved when she played in Brisbane.

Meanwhile, there are some very interesting first rounds coming up:

Naomi Osaka (1) vs. Marie Bouzkova

Venus Williams vs. Coco Gauff

Donna Vekic (19) vs. Maria Sharapova (WC)

Alize Cornet vs. Monica Niculescu (Q)

Yulia Putintseva vs. Hsieh Su-wei

He didn't report her missing and used a press conference to try to convince the public she was a terrible, rebellious woman who had deserted her poor long-suffering husband. While he was out there spreading lies about her, Li Ping's body was dissolving in a bin full of acid.

84 - The Latex Catsuit Murder and The kidnapping of Peter Aston and Terry Ryan

The Latex Catsuit Murder and The kidnapping of Peter Aston and Terry Ryan...

Édouard Stern was a millionaire French banker who had received many death threats due to his business dealings and links to the Russian mafia. On March 1st 2005, he was found shot dead in his apartment in Geneva, Switzerland, wearing a head-to-toe latex catsuit. Out of all the people who wanted him dead, who actually pulled the trigger?

In 1982 Brisbane teenagers Peter Aston and Terry Ryan decided to hitchhike to Melbourne, unfortunately for them they would be picked up by Robin Reid and Paul Luckman. What ensued was one of the most hideous and frightening crimes ever to occur in Australia. Be warned this story is not for the faint of heart. This is a patron request for Alex Jimmy Middleton.

Bloody Murder Scents are here!

The perfume geniuses at Sue cray blay have created special Bloody Murder scents to go along with getting murdery. Andrea Fender sent us a whole box of them and I am in love with them all! They are so delicious! The Bloody Murder range features 4 different scents inspired by the podcast.

Lady Swears: is my personal favourite! It'll be sure to scare all the “old fashioned people” away. Lady Swears is a mixture of bourbon and sweeter notes - so you can swear like a lady while plotting your sweet revenge. It's the perfect scent to express yourself during a work meeting, in the car when someone cuts you off, or when someone tells you to "smile"..

Captain Moonlite: smells like your favorite glass of really good bourbon. You'll have the scent of the handsome bushranger by your side as you try to throw the coppers off of your trail.

Vodka And Swearing: is a fantastic scent with Juniper Sage and Lemongrass Mojito in the mix. Pull up a chair, fluff up your dirty pillows, put on some Vodka and Swearing and partake in your... For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
