In 1969, a group of boys played a Thanksgiving football game. 50 years later, they're still at it. [The Journal Times] "The actual competition is totally secondary. It's all about some old friends gathering for an hour or so, keeping a tradition alive and needling the heck out of each other during games that have ranged from lively to virtually lifeless. As Botzau, a Racine attorney, points out, "Depending on the weather and schedules, participation in the game has ranged from eight to 28 players. Games have been played in weather ranging anywhere from two feet of snow to 50 degrees. Participants have included teachers, lawyers, accountants, X-ray technicians, basketball referees and city bus drivers. Sideline and end zone markers typically consist of empty milk jugs and cardboard boxes.""

Comment on 10 Easy Ways to Improve Your Dog’s Diet by Lily

 Cache
Id like comments on raw diets vs dry. I have a 6 yr old Italian greyhound. She weighs 10 lbs. I continued feeding her the breeders diet of Stella & Chewy freeze dried until last year. Then switched to Small Batch frozen raw paddies. The company is small and family owned and was recommended to me by a friend. My feelings were I had to also give her probiotics if I was going to give her the raw paddies but She wouldn’t eat her food with the powdered probiotic on it. I tried Answer Goat Milk with natural probiotics for dogs, but she only drank it periodically. My new vet believes in grains only. I’m at a Crossroad with this very important decision for my dog. My last dog died from cancer after a year of battling inflammatory bowel syndrome and months of steroids and other meds. He had X-Ray, MRI, and last exploratory surgery, which uncovered zero. So his vet Dr Wheaton, of Mission Viejo, diagnosed Inflamatory Bowel Syndrome and treated him with Science DIET Prescription Food, steroids and probiotics. I regret putting him through all that. He was unhappy, became thin and eventually died of cancer. I always had the hope he would recover but he didn’t. Now I have the fear my 6 yr old IG will develop the same disease if I don’t have her on a good healthy diet. I need Some expienced advice soon.

This iPhone Battery Charging Case Has A ‘Secret Button’ Trick

 Cache

Since Apple released this year’s iPhone iteration — the iPhone 11 series — we saw the entry of several accessories for the three smartphones, both by Apple and other companies. One such accessory is by the Cupertino tech major itself, which comes with a secret button trick you need to know of.

iPhone Charging Case With A “Secret Button”

Apple has launched a new iPhone case for all the new 2019 iPhones — the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Retailing at $129, the iPhone cover is not a simple silicone case we come across. This is a Smart Battery Case that is touted to deliver a 50% increase in the battery of the new iPhone models.

Apart from the in-built battery, the Smart Battery Case has a “secret button” trick that puts an additional button on the iPhone charging case.

This button is a dedicated camera button that calls for the easy launch of the camera app.

The button can open up the camera up whether or not the smartphone is locked, takes a picture (from both the rear and front cameras) with a quick tap and videos with a long press.

Design-wise, the battery case has a microfiber lining on the inside and a soft touch of silicone for ease of usage. Additionally, the iPhone charging case comes with the elastomer hinge design so that it gets easy to remove or put the case on the smartphone.

The iPhone Charging Case Working

While I haven’t used the iPhone charging case personally, a recent video by the YouTube channel TechSmartt shows how the “secret button” on it works.

The button allows for easy picture-taking, which otherwise gets a bit flimsy when we use the volume button for it. Here’s the video for a better look at the iPhone charging case:

Additionally, iFixit dug deeper to find out how the dedicated camera button works on the case. The teardown of the Smart Battery Case suggested that it has a circuit board that connects the dedicated camera button to the iPhone via the lightning port.

This is how the button can easily click pictures from the iPhone when it doesn’t have one.

The iPhone charging case comes in three color variants: Black, White, and Pink Sand and is up for grabs via the Apple website.

The new trans-[Pt(4-mpy)2Cl4] (1) complex (4-mpy is 4-methylpyridine) was prepared from the reaction of H2PtCl6.6H2O with 4-methylpyridine in methanol. Synthesized complex was thoroughly characterized by elemental analysis, IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy.Elemental analysis data (C, H, N) support the general composition of the title complex and the structure have been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. In this complex the geometry platinum(IV)cation is octahedral, formed by two nitrogen atoms from two 4-mpy ligands and four chloride anions. Also, in this complex the strong π…π interactions between pyridine rings are effective on the stabilization of the crystal packing. Furthermore, the luminescence properties of the free 4-mpy ligand as well as the complex 1were investigated in solution. Luminescence emission of complex 1 was red shifted and is weaker than that of the free 4-mpy ligand.

; The term radiation damage in this work is applied to biological macromolecular systems and is defined as the structural and chemical modifications induced by X-rays when interacting with the sample under study. This PhD Thesis approaches the effects of the radiation damage in biological macromolecules in two very different ways. In one side, several new scavenger compounds have been characterized to mitigate the radiation damage effects in macromolecular crystallography and small-angle x-ray scattering, which in turn may enlarge the scientific cases in which these techniques can be used. In the other side, the effects produced by the radiation damage are used to mimic oxidative stress conditions in protein solutions. The results obtained in this Thesis are distributed in four chapters. In chapter 1 nucleoside uridine is characterized as a scavenger compound in macromolecular crystallography experiments at room temperature. The scavenging effect of uridine against radiation damage in this technique is in line with the high scavenging power in small angle x-ray experiments reported by Crosas et al. (2017). In chapter 2 the results are extended to more nucleosides and nitrogenous bases in small angle x-ray experiments. These additives, 5-methyl uridine, cytidine, uridine and cytosine, have the highest scavenging power ever reported, improve significantly the quality of the data and the meaningful information obtained in SAXS experiments, allow extending the technique to low molecular weight protein and to highly diluted protein solutions. Chapter 3 characterizes and assesses the radiation scavenging properties of composite lysozyme crystals grown in the hydropeptidic Fmoc-CF gel in macromolecular crystallography experiments at room temperature. Moreover, we propose a new method to scale the crystallographic data which corrects the systematic error induced by global radiation damage at room temperature. Finally, chapter 4 studies the effect of irradiation on aldose reductase, an enzyme which has a biomedical interest in diabetes. The study, which is published in Castellví et al. (2019), identifies the structural changes of the activated form of the protein with respect to the native form, and clarifies the reason why many drugs targeting the protein had their potency decreased in in vivo tests.

; Polluted water contaminated by heavy metals has received increasing attention due to their high toxicity, persistence in sediment, and biological accumulation of the heavy metals, which lead to a potential threat to animals and human beings even at low concentration. Traditional techniques to remove heavy metal are high cost or making the second pollution that limited large-area applications. Most importantly, traditional techniques cannot apply to such low concentration in water. Therefore, it is emergency to find a low-cost, efficiency and eco-friendly method to deal with this kind of problem. Biosorption can be a promising option in this case due to its high efficiency and eco-friendly, especially the abundant materials in the world such as biomass. On the other hand, a huge amount of biomass waste in the world will cause an environmental problem if not handled properly. Furthermore, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin are abundant in biomass wastes that can be employed as cheap adsorbents due to their special physical and chemical properties. The presence of well-known functional groups in these natural components turn them as potential materials for heavy metal interaction and subsequent removal. Therefore, biomass from agricultural wastes and wood industry have been checked as natural adsorbents to solve two serious environmental problems: firstly the disposal of agriculture wastes, and secondly its use as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals from wastewaters. With this purpose, many different types of biomass feedstocks and some of their biochars are used to remove Cr(III), Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions from a mixture of multiple heavy metals. Furthermore, TiO2 nanoparticles are also a good adsorbent for removing heavy metals. Pine and pyrolyzed pine loaded with TiO2 (Pine/TiO2) have been used as sorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. Single and multi-element systems are used for the heavy metals removal. In addition, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) speciation has been checked for pine biomass/biochar systems. In all cases, different parameters of the biosorption processe are optimized in batch systems (pH of the solution, the initial concentration and the contact time), and kinetics and isotherm modelling have been performed to elucidate the possible biosorption mechanisms. Surface morphology of the adsorbents are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Moreover, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is performed to study the biosorption mechanism at the molecular level. The adsorption capacity of biomass is ranked as follows: FO (from industry sludge waste) > ZO (from agriculture corn biomass waste) >> CO (from wood poplar biomass waste). Complexation and cation exchange have been found to be the two main adsorption mechanisms in systems containing multiple heavy metals, with cation exchange being the most significant. As a summary of the chromium speciation study by pine biomass/biochar systems, the adsorption of Cr(III) is mainly through ion exchange with the mineral components present on the biomaterials surfaces. Pyrolysis process can increase the concentration of such minerals to increase the adsorption capacity. For Pine/TiO2, together with the ion exchange also complexation with catechol can help Cr(VI) adsorption. From XAS measurements it can be concluded that the ion exchange process with carboxylic site groups is the main biosorption step, followed by the chromium reduction. Finally, utilization of biosorbent loaded with heavy metal as brick materials is a promising way to solve disposal problem. These biosorbents are promising materials that can be applied in large scale to deal with the polluted water in the world.

Customs receive mobile X-Ray scanner

Customs and ports officers inspecting the mobile x-ray scanning equipment.

THE Customs Division of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MoFT) will now be able to non-intrusively inspect cargo imports and exports to detect cargo assessed as “high risk” at Honiara International port with a newly received mobile x-ray scanner recently.

The new technology will assist Customs to better implement their mandate to enforce border protection and undertake efficient and timely revenue collection on behalf of Solomon Islands Government whilst facilitating legitimate trade yet ensuring compliance with Customs law.

With the new mobile x-ray scanner, cargoes will be scanned and identified through Customs assessed intelligence by the Risk Management team.

The types of goods of interest to Customs include: those that breaches international supply chain security, detection of prohibited goods like weapons, munitions, illicit narcotics, and identification of undeclared and smuggled goods that evade revenue assessment, such as smuggled tobacco, and mis-declared goods (fine example is kwila logs being described as sawn timber) etc.

The time delay to trade in the release of their goods will be minimal, as the technology enables unobtrusive examination in a matter of minutes, as opposed to current manual examination measured in hours or sometimes days.

The results of the scan will enable officers to decide if the container should be diverted for further physical inspection from an initial interpretation of the x-ray color coded images or released.

In order to keep the cost of doing business to traders as low as possible, under International Customs and World Trade Organisation law, scanning process fees, if any, can only be passed on at the cost incurred in providing the service.

Customs Officers will commence training in the use of the equipment next week and the machine will then become operational.

Customs are also empowered to administer the World Customs Organisation (WCO) SAFE Framework on the movement of goods through the international security supply chain. They possess the legal mandate to enforce border protection, provide industry assistance and undertake revenue collection on behalf of the government.

International Customs law is necessarily strict and customs have the obligation to facilitate legitimate trade but will enforce compliance with Customs laws through the use of targeted intelligence and risk assessment.

Low crystalline apatite in bone char produced at low temperature ameliorates phosphorus-deficient soils

Glæsner, N., Hansen, H. C. B., Hu, Y., Bekiaris, G. & Bruun, S., 1 May 2019, In : Chemosphere. 223, p. 723-730 8 p.

Globally, more than 30% of soils are poor in phosphorus (P) and the productivity of these soils is severely restricted without the addition of P fertiliser. With future P supplies becoming limited, it is becoming increasingly important to identify ways of optimising the use of waste materials as P fertilisers. One technology that has been promoted extensively in recent years to improve quality of degraded soils is the application of biochar. In this context, char produced from recycled animal bone is of special interest because of its high P content (∼15%). This study investigated how production temperature affects chemical P forms in bone char and the impact on soil P availability in different P-deficient soils. The major P form in dried bone meal was poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite. As the pyrolysis temperature increased to 1050 °C, the hydroxyapatite structure measured with X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy persisted. Furthermore, crystallinity increased at temperatures above 750 °C, as revealed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Plant availability was highest for bone char produced between 300 °C and 500 °C in three acidic soils from three continents, and declined rapidly above 750 °C. This strongly indicated that crystallinity of hydroxyapatite limits plant availability at high pyrolysis temperatures. In a high pH soil, all materials resulted in low P availability. As pyrolysis increased the P availability in comparison with dried bone, it was concluded that bone char produced at temperatures between 300 °C and 500 °C has the potential to improve fertility of P-poor, low pH soils.

Unstable, Super Critical CO2-Water Displacement in Fine Grained Porous Media under Geologic Carbon Sequestration Conditions

In this study we investigated fluid displacement water with supercritical (sc) CO2 in chalk under conditions close to those used for geologic CO2 sequestration (GCS), to answer two main questions: How much volume is available for scCO2 injection? And what is the main mechanism of displacement over a range of temperatures? Characterization of immiscible scCO2 displacement, at the pore scale in the complex microstructure in chalk reservoirs, offers a pathway to better understand the macroscopic processes at the continuum scale. Fluid behavior was simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations, using finite-volume methods within a pore network. The pore network was extracted from a high resolution 3D image of chalk, obtained using X-ray nanotomography. Viscous fingering dominates scCO2 infiltration and pores remain only partially saturated. The unstable front, developed with high capillary number, causes filling of pores aligned with the flow direction, reaching a maximum of 70% scCO2 saturation. The saturation rate increases with temperature but the final saturation state is the same for all investigated temperatures. The higher the saturation rate, the higher the dynamic capillary pressure coefficient. A higher dynamic capillary pressure coefficient indicates that scCO2 needs more time to reach capillary equilibrium in the porous medium.

These powered up attacks can only be performed when certain criteria are met within a match, and they can only be used once per game.

You might be wondering what stipulations are needed to land each Krushing Blow for every character on the current roster. Well ...

Here's everything we know about the patient search tool Google is building for doctors — and the internal documents that reveal what it's like to use in its early days

 Cache

Dr. David Feinberg

Google has big plans to do for medical records what the search-engine giant did for practically every other kind of information.

The company is working on a search tool for patients' medical records, part of the work going on with Google's health unit. The unit pulls together the health projects from across Google, and in 2018 hired top doctor Dr. David Feinberg to lead the team.

The work came to light when the Wall Street Journal revealed that Google Health is quietly working with the second-largest health system in the US. The news drew scrutiny about how much private health information the tech giant had access to and how it might use it.

The health system, Ascension, is transferring the personal and medical information of 50 million patients onto Google's cloud network. In return, Google gains access to the data, Business Insider reported. Google has said "a limited number" of Google employees have access to full patient data as part of the deal, and both firms have said the arrangement complies with US privacy laws.

At the core of the work between Google and Ascension is a patient search tool, one that the Google Health team, led by Feinberg has been working on.

Before Google, Feinberg had been at Geisinger, a health system in Pennsylvania, since 2015. Prior to that, he served as CEO of UCLA's health system.

Feinberg's team is responsible for coordinating health initiatives across Google, ranging from the company's search engine and map products, to its Android smartphone operating system, to more futuristic offerings in areas like artificial intelligence.

We got more details of the work going on with patient sesarch in documents obtained by Business Insider as part of the work Google's doing with Ascension

Never miss out on healthcare news. Subscribe to Dispensed, our weekly newsletter on pharma, biotech, and healthcare.

According to a user guide for testers of the tool that was obtained by Business Insider, users can type in patient names to find matches, get an overview of a patient's information, view notes and lab reports, and get a view of patient results over time. The information in the user guide does not contain Ascension patient information, the document noted.

Here's what it looks like:

Patient search redact

"What we thought we could accomplish is take the functionality that we know from organizing information and put it on top of your record," Feinberg said in a video released after news broke of the work Google was doing with Ascension.

For instance, if the doctor's curious if the patient had an MRI or if they've had a particular response to a medication, with Google's help they might be able to find it more conveniently.

"We will pull up all of that information from your record so that your doctor can spend more time with you, looking at you instead of looking in the computer," Feinberg said.

The search gives users the ability to search through patients within a health system — in this case Ascension — pulling up an overview of their health record with the ability to get a closer look at vitals or labs. Record redact

Much like Google Search, the forms are meant to correct for what medical providers are searching for.

The reports can also provide a view of a patient's lab results over time.

In a video posted on November 19, Dr. Alvin Rajkomar, a Google product manager and practicing physician, ran through a demonstration of the program.

In it, he highlighted the ability to make typos, see multiple charts for a patient drawing from multiple medical records, embed links to images like X-rays into notes, and find information in scanned documents through a finder tool.

Screen Shot 2019 11 25 at 12.19.45 PM

"The technology is mindblowing," Feinberg said in a November video. "But if we don't have the trust of the doctor, the nurse, the mom, the dad, the elderly person, the patient, it doesn't matter how good the technology is we're not going to mess with this. We're going to do it the absolute best way possible. We're going to treat it with the respect that it deserves."

Helping Your Child Deal With Sports Injuries

 Cache

Has your child sustained a sports-related injury? Find out what you should do about it.

While sports can provide your child with a wide range of benefits, from building confidence to improved health, playing sports also brings with it a potential risk for injury. By understanding the common types of sports injuries and how they occur, you can help prevent injuries and make playing sports a safe and positive experience for your little one. Read on to learn more, and contact Dr. Lynda Bideau, Dr. Luis Pineiro, and Dr. Alexandria Niewiadomski-Ayala of Children's Physicians in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, and Palm City, FL, if you feel that your child may need treatment.

What are the common types of childhood sports injuries?

Sports injuries can be categorized into two main types: acute and overuse. Acute injuries often occur as a result of trauma or impact. Common acute injuries include,

  • Sprains and strains
  • Broken bones
  • Torn ligaments
  • Fractures
  • Eye injuries
  • Concussions

Overuse injuries usually occur over time rather than suddenly and are often due to repeated stress placed on certain parts of the body. Overuse injuries can also occur if your child isn’t using the proper protective gear. Common overuse injuries include,

  • Shin splints
  • Knee pain
  • Swimmer’s shoulder
  • Spondylolysis (lower back pain caused by overextension)

How can I prevent sports injuries in my child?

There are many things you can do to reduce your child’s risk for sports-related injuries. One way is to ensure that your child is wearing the proper protective gear they need before heading out onto the field. This includes knee/elbow pads, a helmet, and a mouthguard.

Additionally, your child should be warming-up and stretching for about 15 minutes prior to the game to get the blood circulating throughout their body. Muscles that are cold and aren’t properly warmed up are more prone to injury.

Furthermore, make sure that your child has received adequate and proper training prior to their games. If your child has taken time off, they should slowly start practicing and training again to retrain the body and ensure that it is fully prepared to take on the demands of physical activity.

What should I do if my child sustains an injury?

While some parents may turn to the Internet for answers the only person who will be able to tell you what’s going on is a pediatrician. When you come into one of our offices, our pediatricians will ask you questions about your child’s symptoms and injury and then perform a physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests such as an MRI or X-ray will be necessary to detect broken bones, fractures, torn ligaments, and other injuries. The sooner you seek treatment the better.

Assessing radiation dose limits for X-ray fluorescence microscopy analysis of plant specimens

 Cache
Abstract
Background and Aims
X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) is a powerful technique to elucidate the distribution of elements within plants. However, accumulated radiation exposure during analysis can lead to structural damage and experimental artefacts including elemental redistribution. To date, acceptable dose-limits have not been systematically established for hydrated plant specimens.
Methods
Here we systematically explore acceptable dose-rate limits for investigating fresh sunflower (Helianthus annuus) leaf and root samples and investigate the time-dose damage in leaves attached to live plants.
Key results
We find that dose-limits in fresh roots and leaves are comparatively low (4.1 kGy), based on localised disintegration of structures and element-specific redistribution. In contrast, frozen-hydrated samples did not incur any apparent damage even at doses as high as 587 kGy. Furthermore, we find that for living plants subjected to XFM measurement in vivo and grown for a further 9 d before being reimaged with XFM, the leaves display elemental redistribution at doses as low as 0.9 kGy and they continue to develop bleaching and necrosis in the days after exposure.
Conclusions
The suggested radiation dose limits for studies using XFM to examine plants are important for the increasing number of plant scientists undertaking multidimensional measurements such as tomography and repeated imaging using XFM.

Tongue Blade Bite Test as a Diagnostic Screening Tool Rule-Out Mandibular Fracture

 Cache

Mandibular fractures are a common occurrence among young males aged between 16 and 30 years. They are the most common type of injuries in the trauma settings in hospitals and comprise a higher percentage of facial bone fractures. Given the possibility of the emergency department turning chaotic, it is imperative to reduce the wait times as much as possible. Although x-rays and CT scans have been defined in literature and practice as the best diagnostic tools of mandibular fractures, there is evidence to suggest that Tongue Blade Bite Test (TBBT) might be of diagnostic value in ruling out mandibular fractures and ordering advanced imaging modalities. X-rays have a sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 78%, so they are not sufficient to effectively evaluate for mandibular fracture. On the other hand, the Computer tomography (CT), which is the current gold standard, is the imaging modality of choice when assessing a traumatic mandibular injury and can demonstrate a 100% sensitivity in detecting a fracture. However, given that the incidence of trauma to the mandible is higher compared to the prevalence of midface trauma, there have been objections to CT scans on the grounds of high costs for suspected mandibular fracture. The above reason, coupled with high radiation exposures with CT and X-rays mandate for an inexpensive yet reliable alternative in the detection of fractures of the mandible. The TBTT is useful and reliable in ruling out or confirming the suspected mandibular fracture. In this view, the purpose of performing literature research is to evaluate the efficiency of a TBBT of both the pull method TBBT and the break method TBBT in predicting mandible fractures to decide on patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) or urgent care (UC) with a suspected mandibular fracture. Both TBBT methods have a high percentage of sensitivity and specificity as a CT scan, and if utilized correctly, will limit radiation exposure and expensive diagnostic tools making it a useful screening tool to rule-out mandible fractures.

A Thanksgiving Miracle And The End Of An Era

 Cache
Well, I don't know how you all feel about the quietness at this here blog lately, but I just opened it up and read my last post and OMG I MISSED ME.

That is so weird. I mean, I'm with me all the time. But I missed me here. I don't know what that means. Other than you are going to continue to be subjected to my news (or, really, lack thereof) for the foreseeable future.

Good lord, I love this place.

Let's catch up (drawing up a chair). Let's see, last time we talked, it was mid-October and we had just returned from vacation in Bar Harbor (pouring myself a drink - orange juice, anyone?) and I had had the life-changing experience of actually cutting up a butternut squash before it rotted and making it into soup.

Which no one (including myself) liked much...

So you all were stuck with that cliffhanger for 6 weeks, I guess.

Fall finally happened
I was worried about how I would manage to prepare Thanksgiving dinner while working full time, but it turns out that raising 6 kids actually teaches you to multitask pretty well (who knew?). I already had a week-long cooking schedule laid out, because I always worked under the assumption that someone would come down with croup or something equally dire that week, so I needed to be prepared. Even as the kids got older and no longer did things like contract a major illness right before a holiday, I stuck to that schedule, because it worked.

And then Rachel (who is 17 and apparently did not get the memo that croup is only for young kids) came down with the dreaded virus. I had to run her to the doctor on Monday and listen patiently as the doctor gave me all sorts of not-needed advice (hello? 6 kids, all who had croup repeatedly) so we could get the coveted 24-hour dose of steroids that would allow Rachel to stop choking on her own phlegm and, well, BREATHE.

It worked. Only Rachel coughed nonstop all week. To the point that she and I ended up at Urgent Care at 10 PM on Thanksgiving night. Awful, right? I packed enough knitting to last me 4 hours, because c'mon, an HMO urgent care visit on a holiday is a serious investment of time. I also steeled myself for the fact that we were likely to pick up some other lovely holiday ailment from one of the other sickies in the waiting room.

And here is where our Thanksgiving Miracle happened: we walked in and no other patients were there. NOT ONE. We saw the triage nurse within 2 minutes, the doctor in another 5. Lung x-ray, 10 minutes later. It was unbelievable. I didn't even get to knit. And no stranger got to share his flu with us.

You know, I'm typing that and it still seems like a dream.

Random photo of my hand-knit sock collection
So, Thanksgiving! 4 kids (well, offspring - one of those "kids" is 28 now) were home, plus the next-door neighbors with their 3 kids. These neighbors have shared Thanksgiving with us for a number of years now, but I'd always worried they did so only because I asked and they felt obligated. I pictured them discussing whether they could say they were going elsewhere and then be quiet enough (remember, we share a wall) to convince us they weren't home.

So this year I decided to leave them alone and not torture them with an invitation, until Brian came home from college and said, "Are the neighbors coming?" And I said, "I don't know if they really want to" and because we grownups couldn't seem to communicate adequately, he and their same-age daughter took matters into their own hands and we all had Thanksgiving together as usual.

Brian's the emotionally intelligent one, remember?

Also, let's note that they didn't seem to mind that they were having Thanksgiving with Typhoid Rachel, who coughed all through dinner and then headed out to work at Best Buy, because she's a trouper. Of course, they barely blinked an eye when one of their then 4-year-old twins (I still don't know which one) managed to split the back of his head open in our basement and needed stitches. My neighbors are unflappable, is what I'm saying.

Oh, and I survived working during Thanksgiving week, although I did take some unplanned hours of vacation time on that Friday, because I came down with a migraine in the afternoon and couldn't understand words anymore. I considered quitting altogether, but then I came to my senses and took an Excedrin and lay down for a couple of hours instead.

So I think I'm still employed. Not sure, actually - I guess I'll find out tomorrow, though.

Before Thanksgiving (we're working backward here), Susie and I paid a long-overdue visit to IKEA, where we picked up (drum roll, please) an entire set of matching dishes. Two sets, actually:

This makes me insanely happy

I regret not having a before picture. Suffice it to say, our cupboard for the past 25 years was full of mismatched dishes, a look which might have been charming if said dishes weren't all chipped or scratched or just plain ugly (I'm looking at you, mustard-yellow plates I picked up for I-know-not-what reason). Thanksgiving was coming, and I wanted things to look normal for once. Also, Susie wanted pasta bowls.

She's the youngest. We've discussed this.

So now, every time I open our cabinet, I enjoy the beauty of unchipped, shiny, matching dishes. Totally worth the $50 or so it cost me, I'm thinking. And Susie - Gen Z foodie that she is - spends her time elaborately plating all her meals and taking pictures, because all our food looks way better on these new plates.

It's true.

We also picked up a new duvet cover set for the guest bedroom, only it ended up in my bedroom instead:

This also makes me insanely happy
What can I say? I'm a simple person. If you're looking for something more exciting than croup and new dishes and bed linens, you'll have to read somewhere else.

Reaching all the way back to October, Halloween happened. Folks, this was the first year we haven't had a trick-or-treater in the house since 1993. "Don't you want to go out and get some candy?" I asked Susie, a little wistfully. "Your siblings didn't give up trick-or-treating until they were 15!"

"No, it's dumb," she-who-used-to-be-adorable said. And that was that, the end of an era. I even had to pack all the candy bags by myself. The one bright spot was that our trick-or-treater numbers in the neighborhood finally started climbing again, with 58 costumed cuties showing up at our door.

I still have our costume bin in the attic, though - just in case. Hey, those pirate capes sewed by Auntie Kate should fit some future grandkids just fine, right?

"The magnetism of double perovskites containing 5d transition metal ions"

Abstract:

Speaker:
Dr. Patrick M. Woodward, Professor Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry The Ohio State University-Columbus, OH

In this talk I will discuss the magnetism of oxides containing 5d transition metal ions, which differ from their 3d transition metal oxide counterparts in several fundamental ways: (1) the 5d orbitals extend further from the
nucleus which can lead to unexpectedly strong super exchange interactions, (2) for similar electron configurations the spin-orbit coupling of 5d ions is much stronger, and
(3) competing magnetic ground states in 5d transition metal oxides are very sensitive to distortions of the lattice. In this talk I discuss our studies of the magnetic properties of A2MMO6 double perovskites where M is either osmium, rhenium, or iridium. I will discuss double perovskites where the 5d ion is the only magnetic ion in the structure, as well as double perovskites that contain both 3d and 5d ions. Ground states including antiferromagnetism, ferromagnetism, ferrimagnetism and spin glasses can be realized in this family of compounds. A common theme is an extreme sensitivity to changes in the filling of d-orbitals and/or distortions of the crystal structure.

Biography:
Patrick Woodward received B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Engineering from Idaho State University in 1991. He went on to study solid state chemistry with Art Sleight at Oregon State University, earning a M.S. in Materials Science and a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1996. This was followed by a postdoctoral appointment in the Physics Department at the National Synchrotron Light Source, working on advanced X-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques under the supervision of Dave Cox. He came to Ohio State University as an assistant professor in 1998. He received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2001, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004, promoted to Full Professor in 2008, and appointed as a Professor of Physics in winter of 2011. Starting in the Fall of 2011 Dr. Woodward served as the Assistant Director of the NSF funded MRSEC at Ohio State and Chair of Undergraduate Studies in Chemistry.

Customs receive mobile X-Ray scanner

 Cache

Curing epoxy with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surface-functionalized NixFe3-xO4 magnetic nanoparticles

 Cache
Curing epoxy with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surface-functionalized NixFe3-xO4 magnetic nanoparticles Jouyandeh, M; Ganjali, MR; Ali, JA; Aghazadeh, M; Saeb, MR; Ray, Suprakas S Cathodic electrodeposition method was applied in synthesis of three types of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs): bare SPIONs, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated SPIONs (PVP-SPIONs) and Ni2+-doped PVP-SPIONs (PVP/Ni-SPIONs). The synthesized nanoparticles were well characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The potential of the modified SPIONs for curing in an epoxy/amine system having very low nanoparticle concentration was investigated in terms of Cure Index applying nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at different heating rates. A shift in cure behavior from Poor to Good crosslinked epoxy networks by replacing PVP-SPIONs by PVP/Ni-SPIONs in the system was indicative of complementary role of SPIONs doping in Ni, which improved activation of surafce SPIONs towards PVP macromolecule, then thanks to its catalyzing effect enhanced epoxy ring opening due to Ni2+ cations incorporation. Research output: Contribution to journalJournal articleResearchpeer-review

Two highly oxygenated nortriterpenes, picraviane A and B, were isolated from the ethanolic extract of Picramnia glazioviana Engl. The structures were determined by analysis of HRMS and 2D NMR spectroscopic data. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data was also obtained for picraviane B. The absolute configuration of both compounds were assigned by comparison of experimental and calculated vibrational and electronic circular dichroism spectroscopy, respectively. Picraviane A showed a moderate cytotoxic activity against the triple negative MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line. These compounds represent an undescribed class of natural products with limonoid-like skeletons containing a heptanolide as the E-ring.

Sigma-Delta control of charge trapping in heterogeneous devices

 Cache
Sigma-Delta control of charge trapping in heterogeneous devices Bheesayagari, Chenna Reddy Dielectric charging represents a major reliability issue in a variety of semiconductor devices. The accumulation of charge in dielectric layers of a device often alters its performance, affecting its circuital features and even reducing its effective lifetime. Although several contributions have been made in order to mitigate the undesired effects of charge trapping on circuit performance, dielectric charge trapping still remains an open reliability issue in several applications. The research work underlying this Thesis mainly focuses on the design, analysis and experimental validation of control strategies to compensate dielectric charging in heterogeneous devices. These control methods are based on the application of specifically designed voltage waveforms that produce complementary effects on the charge dynamics. Using sigma-delta loops, these controls allow to set and maintain, within some limits, the net trapped charge in the dielectric to desired levels that can be changed with time. This allows mitigating long-term reliability issues such as capacitance-voltage (C-V) shifts in MOS and MIM capacitors. Additionally, the bit streams generated by the control loops provide real-time information on the evolution of the trapped charge. The proposed controls also allow compensating the effects of the charge trapping due to external disturbances such as radiation. This has been demonstrated experimentally with MOS capacitors subjected to various types of ionizing radiation (X-rays and gamma rays) while a charge control is being applied. This approach opens up the possibility of establishing techniques for active compensation of radiation-induced charge in MOS structures as well as a new strategy for radiation sensing. A modeling strategy to characterize the dynamics of the dielectric charge in MOS capacitors is also presented. The diffusive nature of the charge trapping phenomena allows their behavioral characterization using Diffusive Representation tools. The experiments carried out demonstrate a very good matching between the predictions of the model and the experimental results obtained. The time variations in the charge dynamics due to changes in the volatges applied and/or due to external disturbances have been also investigated and modeled. Moreover, the charge dynamics of MOS capacitors under sigma-delta control is analyzed using the tools of Sliding Mode Controllers for an infinite sampling frequency approximation. A phenomenological analytical model is obtained which allows to predict and analyze the sequence of control signals. This model has been successfully validated with experimental data. Finally, the above control strategies are extended to other devices such as eMIM capacitors and perovskite solar cells. Preliminary results including open loop and closed loop control experiments are presented. These results demonstrate that the application of the controls allows to set and stabilize both the C-V characteristic of an eMIM capacitor and the current-voltage characteristic (J-V) of a perovskite solar cell.; La carga atrapada en dieléctricos suele implicar un problema importante de fiabilidad en muchos dispositivos semiconductores.

Keeping Upbeat During Illness Is a Challenge

 Cache
Totally sick dude - September 24th

Do I still have a blog? You wouldn’t know it by how infrequently I’ve updated it lately. Sometimes life can overwhelm. When that happens, I like to believe that I will always be plucky enough to fend off the doldrums and shake my fist defiantly at the obstacles that beset me. However, when illness weakens your knees and keeps you motionless in bed, is there enough pluck to lift your fist, never mind keep your spirits up?

I’ve been incredibly sick this Fall. I started my journey on September 7th. I attended FanX in Salt Lake City, had a good time attending with my daughter, then came home and tried to fight off a case of con crud. After about a week, I thought I had licked it. The sky was clear for a change, and an open parking lot was calling to me. While my daughter was in therapy, I pulled out my longboard for some therapy of my own. I usually wear gear because of my Tourette’s, but I was certain I could be careful. I lasted six minutes.

The moment my wheels hit that evil, cursed twig, my board became instant friends with friction, and I pitched forward as if I was hinged to the pavement. My hands broke the fall, but I took a lot of damage. Clearly, I wasn’t well. My graceless plummet was all the proof I needed. A few days later I was in the ER late at night, getting my hand x-rayed and describing my cold symptoms to the doctor. I had relapsed.

Off and on, off and on the cold went, but the off days quickly shortened. By the end of September I was bedridden, ravaged by seasonal allergies and a mystery illness nobody could identify. Aside from summoning the energy to attend to my daughter’s failing grades, her IEP, and trips to the grocery store, I laid in bed, waiting to get better. My Tourette’s was out of control, and I had no energy to get anything I needed done. Discouragement and depression had settled in, but I was so sick, who could notice?

We treated the illness as viral at first, then bacterial, and finally, after two and a half months of numerous ER/Instacare visits, a trip to my GP, two chest x-rays, a cat scan, three courses of anti-biotics, a visit to an ENT, and multiple visits with my allergist, we concluded I was having an asthmatic reaction to the poor air quality in Salt Lake Valley this Fall. Or maybe it was a sinus migraine? Big shrugs all around.

I have a hard time believing asthma could account for three months of being bedridden, but there was that time in 2013 when I was sick with similar symptoms. I suspect I had a perfect storm this Fall of catching a virus at FanX, suffering from severe seasonal allergies due to all the rain this past Summer, and adding the asthma on top to make things exciting

Now you know what I’ve been up to. Writing all of that was cathartic. If only I could brag about how wonderfully I handled my infirmity.

I must admit I have been pushed beyond my ability to remain optimistic. It’s been a challenge. My sleep schedule is flipped around so completely, I’m not going to bed until next week every day. My pride is deflated because I am physically weak due to so many months of sickness—undoing months of physical therapy. And I am professionally frustrated because I haven’t been able to do my freelance work. I haven’t even written here in my own blog, never mind finding time to work on my book projects.

You could say that I’ve been discouraged lately. You could say that I’ve probably had a difficult time fighting off depression, too.

Fortunately, I’m on the mend. Before I improved physically, however, I had to improve my attitude. My first act was to drag myself to the Instacare. And again and again. Then I made appointments with my GP and my allergist. I was too sick and depressed to do it before, but now I was sick of being sick.

I followed their remedies.
I followed up with new appointments.
I treated the asthma even though I was skeptical.
Then I asked my Bishop to give me a blessing.

I mark my turnaround at that point, even though it has been slow. I wanted a Tiny Tim miraculous recovery, but I’ll take whatever I can get. If you scoff at miracles, let’s consider it this way: God helps those who help themselves. I made a conscious action to move forward. I asked for help. I took care of myself. I started to recover.

Once I had more energy:
I organized my finances.
I picked up my living area.
I reached out to friends.
I baked for neighbors who had experienced hardship.
I helped my older daughters with their challenges and difficult times via texting, phone calls & video chatting.
And I finally dragged myself into a barber shop for a hair cut last week.

I’m still sick. In fact, I may be ill for the rest of the Winter, but I’m in better spirits now. I have a tendency to push too far, but I’m mindful now. No more sprained wrists. No more relapses. I can pace myself back to health while also keeping a handle on my depression. I finally have a proper frame of mind to summon some pluck and get better.

A hearty “thank you” for those readers who bought a copy of my book during my recent hiatus. I hope you found my book on fighting suicidalism helpful.

Death by Wheat-Loaded Cartridge: A Case Report

 Cache
imageThe materials used to produce shotgun ammunition can have different properties depending on the purpose, and ammunition can be fabricated or loaded manually. In Turkey, wheat-loaded cartridges are manufactured for use as sound cartridges. This ammunition is understood by the public to be harmless. However, we present a case of a 13-year-old adolescent boy who was wounded from a contact shot to the chest. An entrance wound measuring 7 cm and 5 cm in diameter was seen on the skin. Wheat grains could not be detected in the internal organs and were only observed between the chest muscles around the entrance wound. A plastic wad was also found in this area. The cause of death was internal bleeding due to internal organ injury. Wheat-loaded cartridges are not visible on x-ray and are difficult to detect visually in the wound.

The Case for Keeping Hottovy

 Cache

With their third pitching coach in as many seasons, the Cubs may have found something special.

The Cubs succeeded in 2016 for several reasons, but the most important may have been their starting pitching. Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks finished second and third (respectively) in Cy Young voting. After a less-successful 2017, the team fired pitching coach Chris Bosio at the behest of Joe Maddon. After parting ways with Bosio, the Cubs brought in Jim Hickey who had previously worked with Joe Maddon in his time with the Rays. Hickey seemed to do a fine job in 2018, but he resigned for personal reasons at the end of the season, going on to join the Dodgers’ front office under fellow ex-Ray Andrew Friedman. Left without a pitching coach during the 2018-2019 offseason, the Cubs looked within and promoted their “Run Prevention Coordinator” Tommy Hottovy.

In many ways, Hottovy previously filled the “conduit” role mentioned in Ben Lindbergh and Travis Sawchik's The MVP Machine. Along with catching/strategy/assistant-pitching coach Mike Borzello, Hottovy acted as a liaison between the front office and the dugout, synthesizing data and player feedback to improve the Cubs’ pitching strategy. This season, though, Hottovy was moved from his secret weapon role into the spotlight, and the results have been impressive. Although the Cubs’ bullpen has struggled as a unit at times, individual pitchers have made significant strides forward. Hottovy has helped the pitching staff make a plethora of changes, but three in particular stand out.

José Quintana

José Quintana is currently putting together his best stretch of starts as a Cub, and possibly one of the best of his career. In his last four starts before Saturday, he struck out 33 and walked only one.

The reason? He's been throwing his sinker higher in the zone. This sounds counterintuitive, but Hottovy is encouraging rotation-mate Kyle Hendricks to do the same. This has allowed Quintana's changeup and curveball to play up, and seems to be confounding hitters thus far.

Kyle Ryan

Kyle Ryan has a 3.21 ERA (matched by a 3.20 FIP) over 47.2 innings, good for the most WAR by a non-starter on the Cubs pitching staff. Ryan serves an important role as the only remaining non-Derek-Holland lefty in the bullpen, but he doesn't just get lefties out. He's posted the 15th-highest groundball rate among qualified relievers.

Ryan credits a lot of his success to the Cubs’ new Pitch Lab and Tommy Hottovy. They identified that his release point had slipped and implemented a change. Ryan now has the left-most release point in the league, and it's led to him becoming a reliable force in a shaky bullpen.

Rowan Wick

Only half of the Cubs’ opening-day bullpen remains with the team. Wick was initially called on to fill one of the gaps left by injuries and underperformance, but since coming up from AAA Iowa on July 23rd, he's impressed with the following line:

12.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 16 K, .311 OPS

Wick been the fifth-most valuable reliever by WAR in all of baseball since that date while generating the sixth-highest groundball rate (minimum 10 IP).

When you look at Wick's stuff, you'll be reminded of a typical good reliever in 2019: a hard fastball thrown high in the zone and a nasty curveball. The improved curveball is a result of a change in grip suggested by Hottovy.

Of course, Hottovy and Borzello had success in previous years. But having Hottovy in the driver's seat in the dugout has greatly improved the flow of information from the front office to individual pitchers. In an organization that has failed to develop pitchers as well as they would like, the successes of Wick and Ryan are particularly encouraging. This could be Joe Maddon's last season as the Cubs’ manager. If that is the case, Cubs fans should hope the new manager keeps Hottovy in his current role so they can continue to watch their pitchers thrive.

Hey, look at this reliever

Meet Reds reliever Lucas Sims. A former first-round draft pick of the Braves in 2012, Sims has struggled as a starter in the majors. He recently joined the Reds bullpen, though, and he came to my attention during a Statcast search. Sims has…(minimum 100 pitches)

  • The fourth-highest curveball spin rate
  • The fourth-highest slider spin rate
  • The eighth-highest four-seamer spin rate
  • The third-highest sinker spin rate

Sims’ best pitch may be his curveball, which can make great hitters like Ronald Acuña look like this:

The Reds’ righty might not be a shutdown reliever just yet (he still has some walk issues, which can be compounded by the occasional home run) but he certainly has the makings of one.

WAR leaderboard check-in

We all know how good Mike Trout is by now. There's an argument to be made that we are witnessing his best season.

Of course, we've heard a lot about Cody Bellinger and Christian Yelich this year, and rightfully so, but in terms of Fangraphs WAR, they're not dominating their league anywhere close to the same extent Trout is dominating the AL.

Bellinger has 0.4 wins on Yelich, and Yelich has 0.8 wins on Ketel Marte. Most columnists seem to agree that the NL MVP race is between Bellinger and Yelich.

According to Fangraphs, Trout has been worth 2.8 wins more than the next best player in the American League. Not only that, he has a 1.5 win advantage over Bellinger, and nearly two wins on Yelich. Even if you discount defense and baserunning, Trout still has the highest wRC+ among all qualified hitters at 184.

Bellinger and Yelich are having incredible seasons, but Trout still reigns.

Travelling to the U.S.? Watch out: Ontario is about to scrap out-of-country emergency health care coverage. Here’s what you need to know.

 Cache

When Toronto resident Jill Wykes had a health scare over a racing heartbeat in Florida a few years back, the $3,000 hospital bill for a two-hour visit and three tests added insult to illness.

Fortunately, the seasoned snowbird had a comprehensive travel health insurance policy that paid the full tab.

But the incident, which turned out to be nothing serious, served as a reminder that medical emergencies can happen any time, anywhere.

Buying enough travel insurance to cover all eventualities becomes even more important for Ontario residents when the province scraps its out-of-country coverage of emergency health care expenses on Jan.1.

Until Dec. 31, OHIP will continue to pay up to $400 per day for emergency in-patient services and up to $50 per day for emergency outpatient and doctor services. Starting next year though, that coverage stops.

A new program will provide kidney dialysis patients with $210 toward each treatment — actual prices in the U.S. range from $300 to $750 — but travellers will be on the hook for everything else.

The province says it’s cancelling the existing “inefficient” program because of the $2.8-million cost of administering $9 million in emergency medical coverage abroad each year. OHIP’s reimbursements also tended to offset only a fraction of the actual expenses.

Without private insurance, travellers can face “catastrophically large bills” for medical care, warns Ministry of Health spokesperson David Jensen, who “strongly encourages” people to purchase adequate coverage.

Health care south of the border, in particular, costs an arm and a leg. On average, fees in the U.S. are double those of other developed countries, according to the International Travel Insurance Group.

The insurance provider cites an array of costs, including: ambulance, $500 and up; ER visit, $150 to $3,000; hospital stay, $5,000 per day; MRI, $1,000 to $5,000; X-ray, $150 to $3,000; hip fracture, $13,000 to $40,000.

The monetary ouch factor can be especially painful for snowbirds, who are flocking to warm spots like Florida, Arizona and Texas in growing numbers as baby boomers reach retirement age.

But a significant number of vacationers of all ages are putting their financial health at risk.

According to a recent survey by InsuranceHotline.com, 34 per cent of Canadian respondents said they were unlikely to buy travel insurance, often in the mistaken belief their province would cover them. And 40 per cent had unrealistic expectations of health care costs, thinking, for example, that emergency medical evacuation would be under $2,000. In reality, the service can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Jill Wykes and her husband Pierre Lepage leave nothing to chance during winters in Sarasota, Fla., an annual trek since 2011 when she retired as a travel industry executive.

The couple, now in their 70s, purchase a multiple-trip plan with a 60-day top-up for their four-month sojourn, which includes driving there and back and flying home for two short visits. Her policy costs about $900 while his is $1,600, because he falls into an older age bracket. They’re each covered for up to $5 million.

Wykes, a blogger and editor of snowbirdadvisor.ca, calls it “foolish” to travel anywhere without health insurance and advises against thinking “you would just drive or fly home if you were sick.” The financial fallout from an accident or sudden illness “can quickly rise into six figures” in the U.S., she adds.

Anne Marie Thomas of InsuranceHotline.com, which provides free quotes for all types of insurance, echoes Wykes’s advice.

“Now, more than ever, you need travel insurance because there will be zero coverage (as of Jan. 1),” she says.

There’s no one-size-fits-all policy and insurance can cover everything from trip cancellation or interruption to lost baggage and medical costs, Thomas explains, so it’s important to match your needs and situation. A sunseeker driving south, for instance, wouldn’t need trip cancellation.

As an example, Thomas says a 70- or 80-year-old flying to Florida would pay about $2,000 for all-inclusive insurance for 15 weeks with a $10-million limit on medical costs.

The non-profit Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) calls the government cuts “short-sighted,” predicting they’ll boost the cost of private insurance by an estimated 7.5 per cent.

The CSA has always “strongly recommended” purchasing adequate insurance prior to departure, president Karen Huestis reminded travellers last month.

Fledgling snowbird Linda Lanteigne, who’s driving to Florida with her husband in mid-January for a two-and-a-half-month stay, is unhappy about OHIP’s cancelled program.

As a taxpaying Canadian, “I don’t think it’s right to take away our coverage,” says the Ottawa-area retiree who’d like to see the government cover the same amount of emergency medical care that people would get in Canada.

Lanteigne, a former operating room buyer in a hospital, shopped around before deciding on a travel policy with the Canadian Automobile Association that will give her $5-million coverage for about $500.

Octogenarian Mae Youngman is living proof that health emergencies can happen anywhere. She’s had three surgeries outside Canada after suffering an aneurysm in Fort Lauderdale, an appendectomy in Sarasota and broken elbow in Mexico.

“It would have been very, very expensive,” to cover the costs without insurance, recalls the retired owner of a travel agency near Windsor, Ont., who’s heading to Cuba for two weeks.

“I’d never leave home without it.”

How to make sure you’re covered

Experienced travellers and representatives from the travel and insurance industries offer these tips:

  • Retirement benefit plans and credit cards may provide health insurance, but read the policy for any limits or exclusions.

  • Compare apples to apples when shopping for a policy. The cost will also depend on your medical history, age and length of vacation.

  • Before purchasing coverage, be aware of your health status, including pre-existing conditions, which must be stable for the required period.

  • Complete the insurer’s medical questionnaire thoroughly and accurately, and let them know if anything changes pre-departure.

  • Always read the policy, including fine print, so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

  • Check travel advisories before you leave; ignoring warnings about an impending hurricane, for example, could cancel your medical coverage.

  • Your purchased insurance has a start and end date so if your holiday is interrupted and you plan on returning, notify your insurer.

Abstract
In the present work, we reported the triterpenoids isolated from n-butanol fraction of Kadsura heteroclita which is a Tujia ethnomedicine with trivial name "Xuetong". This effort resulted in the isolation of six unpresented triterpenoids xuetongsu A-F (1-6), along with five known triterpenoids (7-11). The structures of the reported compounds were established on the 1D, and 2D NMR and HRESIMS spectra, along with CD spectroscopic analysis. Moreover, the absolute stereochemistry of compound 7 was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Antioxidant and cytotoxic activities were evaluated for all isolated compounds, compound 7 shown weak cytotoxic activity against HL-60 with IC50 value of 50.0 μM.
