Spring REST TypeScript generator

 Cache

I have been a backend developer for eighteen years without writing a single line of code on the client-side, but with the dawn of single-page applications, my cooperation with web developers got closer. I started to observe their work with interest. There are so many exciting possibilities on the frontend side. It made me consider to build up my technology stack and become a full stack developer.

I noticed that web developers create TypeScript models and services that reflect our backend model and REST services. It was a tedious job. What is more, after they finally mirrored what we had on the backend, it wasn't the end. Because we always have to keep in mind one thing that is very common in software development... CHANGE. Due to some new business requirements, backend services were modified. The change forced frontend developers to reanalyze backend services and refactor frontend applications so that they would match the server-side.

.Net Core MVC İçerisinde Bootstrap Kullanımı

 Cache

Herkese selamlar !

Introducing Bubo RSS: An Absurdly Minimalist RSS Feed Reader

 Cache

Bubo Reader is a somewhat irrationally minimalist RSS and JSON feed reader you can deploy on Netlify in a few simple steps. I created this one weekend last summer after nostalgically lamenting the demise of Google Reader many years ago. It's named after the silly robot owl from the film Clash of the Titans (1981).

View the demobubo-rss-demo.netlify.com
View the source codegithub.com/georgemandis/bubo-rss

You will find instructions on the project's GitHub page for how to make your own instance of Bubo Reader, update the list of feeds and deploy to Netlify. If you already have interconnected accounts on those two services it's really quite straightforward!

Read on for more information about the original impetus, design goals and thoughts surrounding this project.

What Does "Irrationally Minimalist" Mean?

Many RSS readers—including the former Google Reader—would pull the contents of a post into your feed so you could read everything in one place. Although I completely understand why someone would want to do that, I decided even that introduced too much complexity for my liking.

My goal with Bubo Reader was to be able to see a list of the most recent posts from websites I like in one place with links to read them if I want. That's it. If I want to read something, I'll click through and read it on the publisher's site. If I want to keep track of what I've clicked on and read I can reflect that using the a:visited pseudo selector in my CSS.

I think it's often overlooked how many problems the browser has already solved for us. Sometimes modern web development feels like fighting against the problems we've already solved as we try to build things that pretend they don't live in the browser.

Bubo Reader does not store posts in a database or keep track of what I've read. If an item is no longer available in the site's feed then it no longer appears in Bubo. If I miss something, that's just life. I can live with that.

Design Goals for This Project

Many RSS feed reader services have sprouted up since Google Reader left, but they all do more than I need. All I wanted was something that:

  • Had an absurdly simple interface, relying almost entirely on default HTML/browser behaviors and functionality. I'm using lesser-known HTML like the details and summary elements to hide and reveal content instead of recreating that wheel in JavaScript, for example.

  • Could be themed with CSS or mildly extended using JavaScript. For my personal copy of Bubo Reader I changed the font to use the system-ui font and bumped the font-size a little, but that's mostly it.

  • Didn't worry about pulling in the link's content into the reader interface. I'm happy to read most content on the site it originated from and many feeds only provide a short description of th content as it is. Mostly I wanted a single dashboard to know when new stuff is published and available.

  • Didn't rely on a database to see what I've read or keep an archive of content over time. Again, I found the browser has a way of taking care of this for me. The a:visited pseudo selector is enough indication for me to know whether or not I've already read something.

A Healthier Way to Read Online

I also think this is a healthier way to consume information and news. So much of social media is designed to reward things that hit the dopamine buttons in our brains, manipulate our common, human propensity for anxiety or distrubute outright propaganda.

Refreshing Content

The beauty of running Bubo on Netlify is you can setup a Build Hook to rebuild the site when you want to "refresh" the list of feeds. I'm using IFTTT to trigger rebuilds once an hour, which is a perfectly sane rate to consume information at. You could do the same, or use another service like Zapier, EasyCron, setup a cronjob on your server or even setup a cronjob to run locally on your machine and ping the hook as often as you wish.

What About Authentication?

There is no authenticaton required for Bubo Reader. Netlify does offer Basic Authentication under their Pro plan, which would probably be the easiest solution to implement. You could also utilize their Identity feature to add some authentication. I don't subscribe to any private or sensitive feeds, so at the moment that isn't much of a priority for this project.

Adding New Feeds

Find them in the site's source code and add them to the feeds.json file. This is the trickiest part of this whole setup I suppose, but I'm willing to bet the people who clone projects from GitHub and deploy them to Netlify are okay with editing a little JSON from time to time.

The first version of this project used Puppeteer to extract the feeds from a site. This was actually quite cool, but would hang or fail periodicially. Builds were slow and there was a lot of work making sure things didn't timeout or use too much memory on the tiny server I'd setup. Simply parsing a list of known RSS feeds was much simpler and faster.

It's on my list to look into converting this into a serverless version that could run using Netlify's Functions, but after using my own project for a month I realized it didn't make the thing feel much more usable to me.

In Summary

If you find Bubo Reader useful, interesting or it inspires a project of your own I'd love to hear about it! Again, you'll find the code on GitHub.

Making a Better Custom Select Element

 Cache

Julie Grundy kicks off this, our fifteenth year, by diving headlong into the snowy issue of customising form inputs. Nothing makes a more special gift at Christmas that something you’ve designed and customised yourself. But can it be done while staying accessible to every user?

In my work as an accessibility consultant, there are some frequent problems I find on people’s websites. One that’s come up a lot recently is that people are making custom select inputs for their forms. I can tell that people are trying to make them accessible, because they’ve added ARIA attributes or visually-hidden instructions for screen reader users. Sometimes they use a plugin which claims to be accessible. And this is great, I love that folks want to do the right thing! But so far I’ve never come across a custom select input which actually meets all of the WCAG AA criteria.

Often I recommend to people that they use the native HTML select element instead. Yes, they’re super ugly, but as Scott Jehl shows us in his article Styling a Select Like It’s 2019 they are a lot easier to style than they used to be. They come with a lot of accessibility for free – they’re recognised and announced clearly by all screen reader software, they work reliably and predictably with keyboards and touch, and they look good in high contrast themes.

But sometimes, I can’t recommend the select input as a replacement. We want a way for someone to choose an item from a list of options, but it’s more complicated than just that. We want autocomplete options. We want to put images in there, not just text. The optgroup element is ugly, hard to style, and not announced by screen readers. The focus styles are low contrast. I had high hopes for the datalist element, but although it works well with screen readers, it’s no good for people with low vision who zoom or use high contrast themes.

A screenshot of a datalist element: The input area has been zoomed in but the dropdown text is not zoomed in.
Figure 1: a datalist zoomed in by 300%

Select inputs are limited in a lot of ways. They’re frustrating to work with when you have something which looks almost like what you want, but is too restricted to be useful. We know we can do better, so we make our own.

Let’s work out how to do that while keeping all the accessibility features of the original.

Semantic HTML

We’ll start with a solid, semantic HTML base. A select input is essentially a text input which restricts the possible answers, so let’s make a standard input.

<label for="custom-select">User Type</label>
<input type="text" id="custom-select">

Then we need to show everyone who can see that there are options available, so let’s add an image with an arrow, like the native element.

<label for="custom-select">User Type</label>
<input type="text" id="custom-select">
<img src="arrow-down.svg" alt="">

For this input, we’re going to use ARIA attributes to represent the information in the icon, so we’ll give it an empty alt attribute so screen readers don’t announce its filename.

Finally, we want a list of options. An unordered list element is a sensible choice here. It also lets screen reader software understand that these bits of text are related to each other as part of a group.

<ul class="custom-select-options">
  <li>User</li>
  <li>Author</li>
  <li>Editor</li>
  <li>Manager</li>
  <li>Administrator</li>
</ul>

You can dynamically add or remove options from this list whenever you need to. And, unlike our <option> element inside a <select>, we can add whatever we like inside the list item. So if you need images to distinguish between lots of very similar-named objects, or to add supplementary details, you can go right ahead. I’m going to add some extra text to mine, to help explain the differences between the choices.

This is a good base to begin with. But it looks nothing like a select input! We want to make sure our sighted users get something they’re familiar with and know how to use already.

A text input field with an unordered list below it.

Styling with CSS

I’ll add some basic styles similar to what’s in Scott Jehl’s article above.

A styled select box with the dropdown open.

We also need to make sure that people who customise their colours in high contrast modes can still tell what they’re looking at. After checking it in the default Windows high contrast theme, I’ve decided to add a left-hand border to the focus and hover styles, to make sure it’s clear which item is about to be chosen.

A styled select box with the dropdown open. The colours are inverted so that the text is white and the background is black.

This would be a good time to add any dark-mode styles if that’s your jam. People who get migraines from bright screens will thank you!

JavaScript for behaviour

Of course, our custom select doesn’t actually do anything yet. We have a few tasks for it: to toggle the options list open and closed when we click the input, to filter the options when people type in the input, and for selecting an option to add it to the input and close the list. I’m going to tackle toggling first because it’s the easiest.

Toggling

Sometimes folks use opacity or height to hide content on screen, but that’s like using Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. No-one can see what’s under there, but Harry doesn’t cease to exist and you can still poke him with a wand. In our case, screen reader and keyboard users can still reach an invisible list.

Instead of making the content see-through or smaller, I’m going to use display: none to hide the list. display: none removes the content from the accessibility tree, so it can’t be accessed by any user, not just people who can see. I always have a pair of utility classes for hiding things, as follows:

.hidden-all {
  display: none;
}

.hidden-visually {
    position: absolute;
    width: 1px;
    height: 1px;
    padding: 0;
    overflow: hidden;
    clip: rect(0,0,0,0);
    white-space: nowrap;
    -webkit-clip-path: inset(50%);
    clip-path: inset(50%);
    border: 0;
}

So now I can just toggle the CSS class .hidden-all on my list whenever I like.

Browsing the options

Opening up our list works well for our mouse and touch-screen users. Our styles give a nice big tap target for touch, and mouse users can click wherever they like.

We need to make sure our keyboard users are taken care of though. Some of our sighted users will be relying on the keyboard if they have mobility or dexterity issues. Usually our screen reader users are in Browse mode, which lets them click the arrow keys to navigate through content. However, custom selects are usually inside form elements. which pushes screen reader software to Forms Mode. In Forms mode, the screen reader software can only reach focusable items when the user clicks the Tab key, unless we provide an alternative. Our list items are not focusable by default, so let’s work on that alternative.

To do this, I’m adding a tabindex of -1 to each list item. This way I can send focus to them with JavaScript, but they won’t be part of the normal keyboard focus path of the page.

csOptions.forEach(function(option) {
    option.setAttribute('tabindex, '-1')
})

Now I can move the focus using the Up and Down arrow keys, as well as with a mouse or tapping the screen. The activeElement property of the document is a way of finding where the keyboard focus is at the moment. I can use that to loop through the elements in the list and move the focus point forward or back, depending on which key is pressed.

function doKeyAction(whichKey) {
  const focusPoint = document.activeElement
  switch(whichKey) {
    case: 'ArrowDown':
      toggleList('Open')
      moveFocus(focusPoint, 'forward')
      break
    case: 'ArrowUp':
      toggleList('Open')
      moveFocus(focusPoint, 'back')
      break
  }
}

Selecting

The Enter key is traditional for activating an element, and we want to match the original select input.

We add another case to the keypress detector…

case 'Enter':
  makeChoice(focusPoint)
  toggleList('Shut')
  setState('closed')
  break

… then make a function which grabs the currently focused item and puts it in our text input. Then we can close the list and move focus up to the input as well.

function makeChoice(whichOption) {
    const optionText = whichOption.documentQuerySelector('strong')
    csInput.value = optionText
}

Filtering

Standard select inputs have keyboard shortcuts – typing a letter will send focus to the first item in the option which begins with that letter. If you type the letter again, focus will move to the next option beginning with that letter.

This is useful, but there’s no clue to tell users how many options might be in this category, so they have to experiment to find out. We can make an improvement for our users by filtering to just the set of options which matches that letter or sequence of letters. Then sighted users can see exactly how many options they’ve got, and continue filtering by typing more if they like. (Our screen reader users can’t see the remaining options while they’re typing, but don’t worry – we’ll have a solution for them in the next section).

I’m going to use the .filter method to make a new array which only has the items which match the text value of the input. There are different ways you could do this part – my goal was to avoid having to use regex, but you should choose whatever method works best for your content.

function doFilter() {
  const terms = csInput.value
  const aFilteredOptions = aOptions.filter(option => {
    if (option.innerText.toUpperCase().startsWith(terms.toUpperCase())) {
    return true
    }
  })
  // hide all options
  csOptions.forEach(option => option.style.display = "none")
  // re-show the options which match our terms
  aFilteredOptions.forEach(function(option) {
    option.style.display = ""
  })
}

Nice! This is now looking and behaving really well. We’ve got one more problem though – for a screen reader user, this is a jumble of information. What’s being reported to the browser’s accessibility API is that there’s an input followed by some clickable text. Are they related? Who knows! What happens if we start typing, or click one of the clicky text things? It’s a mystery when you can’t see what’s happening. But we can fix that.

ARIA

ARIA attributes don’t provide much in the way of additional features. Adding an aria-expanded='true' attribute doesn’t actually make anything expand. What ARIA does is provide information about what’s happening to the accessibility API, which can then pass it on to any assistive technology which asks for it.

The WCAG requirements tell us that when we’re making custom elements, we need to make sure that as a whole, the widget tells us its name, its role, and its current value. Both Chrome and Firefox reveal the accessibility tree in their dev tools, so you can check how any of your widgets will be reported.

We already have a name for our input – it comes from the label we associated to the text input right at the start. We don’t need to name every other part of the field, as that makes it seem like more than one input is present. We also don’t need to add a value, because when we select an item from the list, it’s added to the text input and therefore is exposed to the API.

A styled, closed select dropdown.
A list of properties in Firefox for the select element.
Figure 2: How Firefox reports our custom select to assistive technology.

But our screen readers are going to announce this custom select widget as a text entry field, with some images and a list nearby.

The ARIA Authoring Practices site has a pattern for comboboxes with listboxes attached. It tells you all the ARIA you need to make screen reader software give a useful description of our custom widget.

I’m going to add all this ARIA via JavaScript, instead of putting it in the HTML. If my JavaScript doesn’t work for any reason, the input can still be a plain text field, and we don’t want screen readers to announce it as anything fancier than that.

csSelector.setAttribute('role', 'combobox')
csSelector.setAttribute('aria-haspopup', 'listbox')
csSelector.setAttribute('aria-owns', '#list')
csInput.setAttribute('aria-autocomplete', 'both')
csInput.setAttribute('aria-controls', 'list')

The next thing to do is let blind users know if the list is opened or closed. For that task I’m going to add an aria-expanded attribute to the group, and update it from false to true whenever the list changes state in our toggling function.

The final touch is to add a secret status message to the widget. We can use it to update the number of options available after we’ve filtered them by typing into the input. When there are a lot of options to choose from, this helps people who can’t see the list reducing know if they’re on the right track or not.

To do that we first have to give the status message a home in our HTML.

<div id='custom-select-status' class='hidden-visually' aria-live='polite'></div>

I’m using our visually-hidden style so that only screen readers will find it. I’m using aria-live so that it will be announced as often as it updates, not just when a screen reader user navigates past it. Live regions need to be present at page load, but we won’t have anything to say about the custom select then so we can leave it empty for now.

Next we add one line to our filtering function, to find the length of our current list.

updateStatus(aFilteredOptions.length)

Then we send that to a function which will update our live region.

function updateStatus(howMany) {
    console.log('updating status')
    csStatus.textContent = howMany + " options available."
}

Conclusion

Let’s review what we’ve done to make an awesome custom select input:

  • Used semantic HTML so that it’s easily interpreted by assistive technology while expanding the types of content we can include in it
  • Added CSS styles which are robust enough to survive different visual environments while also fitting into our branding needs
  • Used JavaScript to provide the basic functionality that the native element has
  • Added more JavaScript to get useful functionality that the native element lacks
  • Carefully added ARIA attributes to make sure that the purpose and results of using the element are available to assistive technology and are updated as the user interacts with it.

You can check out my custom select pattern on GitHub – I’ll be making additions as I test it on more assistive technology, and I welcome suggestions for improvements.

The ARIA pattern linked above has a variety of examples and customisations. I hope stepping through this example shows you why each of the requirements exists, and how you can make them fit your own needs.

I think the volume of custom select inputs out there shows the ways in which the native select input is insufficient for modern websites. You’ll be pleased to know that Greg Whitworth and Simon Pieters are working on improving several input types! You can let them know what features you’d like selects to have. But until that work pays off, let’s make our custom selects as accessible and robust as they can possibly be.

DevTools as the ultimate CSS advocate

 Cache

I’ve just come off the Mozilla Developer Roadshow, and it’s the third one I’ve done so far. As a Mozilla volunteer, it has been quite a privilege to be part of such a meaningful event. I’m fairly fond of this style of event, where it’s focused on local communities, on sharing knowledge and updates about Firefox and web technologies in a smaller, more intimate setting.

My involvement with the roadshow started in 2017, way before I knew what developer relations was. Now, in hindsight, I was probably doing devrel-like things but just not as a full-time job. My interest in tech stemmed from the web, and I genuinely love web technologies. Native web technologies. And the internet as an infrastructure that allowed the web to exist.

Browsers fascinate me to no end as well. Because the web is one of the only places where backwards compatibility is a hard requirement. Everyone involved in growing and advancing the web, from standards bodies, to browser vendors, to open-source contributors, are aware of the phrase “we can’t break the web”. And I love that.

So about DevTools and CSS

For the latter half of this year, I’ve been talking mainly about DevTools for CSS, because the more I thought about it, the more I realised that DevTools is more than just a debugging tool. The nature of how developers access and use DevTools gives it the potential to be much more.

Most web developers will open DevTools at some point in their process, often when things are not behaving as expected. This is an opportunity for DevTools to help with the understanding of what is going on with their CSS.

As of now, Firefox is the only browser that is focusing on moving in this direction. They ship their new CSS features and DevTools support for that feature at the same time. And this makes perfect sense. When developers encounter and try out a new CSS feature, it is inevitable that DevTools will be invoked.

CSS has a very visual output. The value that DevTools can provide is a visualisation of what CSS is doing to the elements on the page. Most browsers have rudimentary support for things like margins, borders and paddings on each element, but that’s about it.

The newer CSS features, like Flexbox, Grid or Shapes, introduce new properties and behaviours that can sometimes be complicated to people who are encountering them for the first time. One of my not-so-secret agendas is to encourage developers to use as many new (and potentially unfamiliar) CSS properties as possible.

The browser landscape has changed since the early days of Mosaic, and the speed at which new features and bug fixes are shipped has increased dramatically. If DevTools can somehow make it easier to comprehend new CSS properties and behaviours, I’m convinced that more developers would be willing to try them out for themselves.

And that is why I think DevTools can become the ultimate CSS advocate, if browser vendors choose to push their respective DevTools functionality in that direction.

Wrapping up

Anyway, these are just some thoughts about DevTools that I’ve had but never had the time to explicitly state them during the talks that I give. Largely because the focus of my talks was the CSS, and DevTools was a means to explain the CSS. Because DevTools can be ah-maz-ing at explaining CSS.

<input type="text" id="custom-select">

Then we need to show everyone who can see that there are options available, so let’s add an image with an arrow, like the native element.

<label for="custom-select">User Type</label>
<input type="text" id="custom-select">
<img src="arrow-down.svg" alt="">

<ul class="custom-select-options">
  <li>User</li>
  <li>Author</li>
  <li>Editor</li>
  <li>Manager</li>
  <li>Administrator</li>
</ul>

I always have a pair of utility classes for hiding things, as follows:

.hidden-all {
  display: none;
}

.hidden-visually {
    position: absolute;
    width: 1px;
    height: 1px;
    padding: 0;
    overflow: hidden;
    clip: rect(0,0,0,0);
    white-space: nowrap;
    -webkit-clip-path: inset(50%);
    clip-path: inset(50%);
    border: 0;
}

This way I can send focus to them with JavaScript, but they won’t be part of the normal keyboard focus path of the page.

csOptions.forEach(function(option) {
    option.setAttribute('tabindex, '-1')
})

Now I can move the focus using the Up and Down arrow keys, as well as with a mouse or tapping the screen. The activeElement property of the document is a way of finding where the keyboard focus is at the moment. I can use that to loop through the elements in the list and move the focus point forward or back, depending on which key is pressed.

function doKeyAction(whichKey) {
  const focusPoint = document.activeElement
  switch(whichKey) {
    case: 'ArrowDown':
      toggleList('Open')
      moveFocus(focusPoint, 'forward')
      break
    case: 'ArrowUp':
      toggleList('Open')
      moveFocus(focusPoint, 'back')
      break
  }
}

Then we can close the list and move focus up to the input as well.

function makeChoice(whichOption) {
    const optionText = whichOption.documentQuerySelector('strong')
    csInput.value = optionText
}

There are different ways you could do this part – my goal was to avoid having to use regex, but you should choose whatever method works best for your content.

function doFilter() {
  const terms = csInput.value
  const aFilteredOptions = aOptions.filter(option => {
    if (option.innerText.toUpperCase().startsWith(terms.toUpperCase())) {
    return true
    }
  })
  // hide all options
  csOptions.forEach(option => option.style.display = "none")
  // re-show the options which match our terms
  aFilteredOptions.forEach(function(option) {
    option.style.display = ""
  })
}

Then we send that to a function which will update our live region.

function updateStatus(howMany) {
    console.log('updating status')
    csStatus.textContent = howMany + " options available."
}

[Из песочницы] Новичку only: 10 вещей, которые вы должны знать как веб-разработчик

 Cache
Привет, Хабр! Представляю вашему вниманию перевод статьи «10 Things You Should Know As a Web Developer» автора Anuupadhyay.

1. HTML / CSS / JS

Comment on Being a Dev Dad by Angelo Hedley

 Cache
I think i have the same s but i think mine is amplified so much greater. I have lost my job 3 months after I started studying full Stack Web Development with HyperionDev. my wife works so she travels and gets at 6:30pm-7pm so shes always tired. luckily i paid large portions so the fees isnt getting me down, but i have struggled with studying, cleaning, cooking and looking after my 2 year-old son and 10 month old daughter. I am now taking a break from studies to learn the same things im studying at HyperionDev on udemy and on youtube (because i cant seem to catch up and get my head around the concepts of javascript)so that when i resume i will at least be able to understand their content they teach as their content is not so easy to understand. best of all, i started my business as a developer so getting clients to meet houshold needs and pay for my studies is a must and its an addition to my stress levels. i work from 7am-12pm studying or work on clients sites from 9pm and i go to bed at 1am. My baby girl wakes up early morning hours, and i AM TIRED AS HELL and wake up at 6am. sometimes i think of having a joint but i cant let my guard down like that because my 2 year old is fast and too busy. time management is not working , i cant get them into a routine. and i feel like my life is going to the shit-hole. worst part is my website does not look right and i cant seem to find the problem ... so i cant send people to my website as its not complete. any advise on my situation?

Costly Accessibility Lawsuits Are on the 2020 Horizon for Unsuspicious Franchising Brands with Inferior Brand Website Providers

 Cache

SeoSamba Announces All New Websites To Be Compliant With the Americans with Disabilities Act WCAG 2.1 AA Standard

Is your Website compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act? Has your brand website provider got your back?

Find out here: SeoSamba now offers expedited ADA compliance audit expert services and retrofit services.

Your website might cost you more in 2020 than ever before. The plaintiff’s lawyers are filing ADA lawsuits as fast as they can. This is especially true for franchise brands, as they are more exposed due to their ubiquitous nature, multi-unit structure and perceived deep pockets.

The latest development involved a supreme court decision to deny a petition from Domino’s Pizza, leaving in place a lower court decision against the company. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/10/07/dominos-supreme-court.html

Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is being interpreted to include websites as “places of public accommodation”.

Websites with significantly inaccessible components can be seen as discriminatory against persons with disabilities. The ADA is a strict liability law. This means there are no excuses nor defenses for violations. In other words, you cannot claim ignorance or that your web developer is working on it.

There is no current legal prescription that exists for web accessibility in private U.S. entities but WCAG 2.1 AA is frequently referenced by courts.

Quick-fix solutions for website accessibility do not exist at this time. Website auditing and modifying need to be handled by seasoned professionals, experienced in meeting these legal requirements. Redrafts can be expensive based on how far out of compliance your websites are.

No cost ADA compliance

Part of SeoSamba’s unwavering commitment to ever-higher standards and innovation includes all SeoSamba U.S customers, including franchise brands and their franchisees will receive WCAG 2.1 AA compliant websites out-of-the-box.

Michel Leconte, SeoSamba CEO commentsSeoSamba has been at the forefront of the industry delivering high-quality W3C compliant sites for many years, but we are now taking it to the next level with WCAG 2.1 AA compliant websites. He further adds “We are happy to help all our customers, and especially franchising brands minimize exposure to the potentially devastatingly costly lawsuit.”

Settlements on ADA website compliance can amount to $50,000 or more. And this is to avoid lawsuits at an early stage! If you end up settling in court, you still have to spend the money to make your sites accessible and compliant.

Remember, the best course of action is to make all of your websites accessible across your entire brand network if you are a franchisor. Procrastination is a costly option.

SeoSamba now offers expedited ADA compliance audit expert services and retrofit services.

Alternatively, find out how your franchise brand can easily and inexpensively migrate to SeoSamba Marketing OS, a modern brand marketing platform, and SeoSamba’s CMS outfitted with WCAG 2.1 AA compliant websites and packed with collaborative social, review, blog, call tracking, CRM, and website-built tools.

Local website OverHere is redefining the way people travel

 Cache
Story 353327194

As South Africans plan for their December holidays, they can rely on new features in a completely free-to-use website developed by a Leon Schnell, Founder of OverHere.co.za.OverHere is a website which makes use of map code systems which is redefining the way people travel. Mapcodes were developed in 2001 by Pieter Geelen and Harold Goddijn, soon after the GPS satellite signals were opened up for civilian use. It was decided to donate the mapcode system to the public domain in 2008. A mapcode represents a location, they were designed to be short, easy to recognise, remember and communicate. They are precise to a few meters, which is good enough for every-day use. They are free and can be  used by anyone, accurate to within around five meters

Schnell was first exposed to open source map codes in 2016, where he worked for TomTom South Africa as a B2B Marketing Manager promoting map licensing to corporate clients and government. “Although I immediately saw the value of mapcodes, I felt a lot more could be done within a South African context to increase public awareness and uptake of this incredible technology.He then set a personal goal to see if he could use what he knew about web development and JavaScript to create a functioning website that enabled users to generate and decode mapcodes. Schnell achieved that goal and launched OverHere earlier this year. By promoting mapcodes in South Africa, OverHere is already unique and even at an international level it stands out

A mapcode consists of two groups of letters and digits, separated by a dot. An example of a mapcode in Amsterdam is 49.4V. This shortcode is sufficient as long as it is clear what country or state the mapcode belongs in (in this case, The Netherlands). Schnell notes that business cards are not is big enough for the full address full physical address, and you can’t write down a location pin by hand inside your phonebook or share it telephonically thus Mapcodes come in and play a major role to help you to find your way.

OverHere’s map codes help you to find your way easily whether you are in the bushveld, beaches or urban areas. The latest upgrade of OverHere adds walking directions alongside driving directions, attracted attention at industry conferences, helped ensure that deliveries to mines run smoothly, and given all its diverse visitors an alternative to sharing their location accurately. In May 2019, it enabled voters to find polling stations.

Along the way, he had to refresh what he learnt previously from only one year of Computer Science at University, teaching myself JavaScript, HTML and CSS web development in a WordPress environment said Schnell. “I’d love to live in a future where we’re all swopping addresses as mapcodes. Ultimately, it’s about establishing a thriving integrated ecosystem where mapcodes don’t become seen as alternatives to addresses, but they become the addresses.
