Today:  This is Five Minute Friday (FMF), just a little quick tip on how you can think differently about your self defense in today’s modern world.  Things are always changing, but we always have to remember the basics.  These tips are designed to keep the perspective of basic self defense while looking at our ever changing world.

Black Friday sales are here!  Are you going out and taking part?  If you are, remember to watch out.  Look around, get your head out of your phone and be extra careful in those transitional spaces.

Consider taking the gifts home and not leaving them in your car.

CNN muhbiri kimyasal silah tespitini 'koklayarak' yapıyor.

 Cache

AKP'nin ilk Maliye Bakanı Kemal Unakıtan'ın Küçükçamlıca'daki villasının çatısı, AKP'li Üsküdar Belediyesi tarafından kanuna aykırı olduğu gerekçesiyle yıkıldı. Unakıtan'ın eşi Ahsen Unakıtan, zamanında tebligat yapılmadığını savunarak Üsküdar Belediye Başkanı Hilmi Türkmen'i suçladı ve polisler tarafından tartaklandığını söyledi.

AKP'nin ilk Maliye Bakanı Kemal Unakıtan'ın 1983'ten beri oturduğu ve 2006 yılında yıkıp yeniden yaptırdığı Küçükçamlıca'daki villasının çatısı, AKP'li Üsküdar Belediyesi tarafından kanuna aykırı olduğu gerekçesiyle yıkıldı. Sözcü'den Fatma Vurgun'un haberine göre, Belediye zabıtalarının yıkım esnasında kendisini tartakladığını iddia eden Kemal Unakıtan'ın eşi Ahsen Unakıtan, zamanında tebligat yapılmadığını savunarak Üsküdar Belediye Başkanı Hilmi Türkmen'i suçladı.

'POLİSLER BENİ TARTAKLADI'

Cumhurbaşkanı Erdoğan'a bir türlü ulaşamadığını da belirten Ahsen Unakıtan, "Fakat etrafı bugün zırhla çevrili.

Unakıtan’ın parseline 2006 yılında Üsküdar Belediyesi, İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi ve 3 No’lu Tabiat Kültür Varlıkları Koruma Bölge Kurulu’nun kararıyla üç villa yapılabilmesi yolunda izin çıktı.

Anlässlich der Premiere seines neuen Stücks "You should have seen me dancing waltz" auf Kampnagel in Hamburg analysiert Mroué die Lage in seiner Heimat. Was steckt dahinter? Was fordern die Menschen? Warum? DANCE ON ENSEMBLE / RABIH MROUÉ: "You should have seen me dancing Waltz" from DIEHL+RITTER on Vimeo. Mroué: "You should have seen me dancing waltz" konfrontiert zwei Medien miteinander.

THE O RIGINALS - G-LAND TSUNAMI- FATHER SON

Sustainability Solutions Take Center Stage at Demo Day for Black & Veatch Cleantech Accelerator

 Cache

Seven U.S. entrepreneurs chosen to participate in the Black & Veatch IgniteX Cleantech Accelerator recently took the stage in downtown Kansas City to showcase their business models and demonstrate how they’re poised to rewrite how the enterprise focuses on sustainability.

Powered by LaunchKC, the Cleantech Accelerator’s Demo Day drew 250 engineers, entrepreneurs, investors, students and professionals who watched as Accelerator founders presented their compelling proofs of how they’re gaining traction in the market.

“When we launched the Accelerator at Black & Veatch, we announced we were looking for the boldest, brightest entrepreneurs and startups in the cleantech space,” said Hyleme George, program director for the Cleantech Accelerator and Demo Day host. “Combining the startups’ novel technology and nimbleness with Black & Veatch’s scale and expertise can move us further and faster towards our mission of building a world of difference through innovation in sustainable infrastructure.”

View this video to learn more about the IgniteX Cleantech Accelerator.

The Nov. 13 Demo Day forum provided the founders with a platform to share their business models via eight-minute pitches that spanned each company’s value proposition and market opportunity.

“It has been incredibly effective to focus on a target area with an established and forward-looking Kansas City company like Black & Veatch to be able to identify and sort new technologies that can create jobs and follow-on investment in that industry,” said Drew Solomon, competition chair of LaunchKC and senior vice president at the Economic Development Corp. of Kansas City, MO.

The IgniteX Cleantech Accelerator cohort entered the Demo Day fresh from a 12-week accelerator boot camp with Black & Veatch personnel and other industry experts, who assisted them in planning, designing and executing real-world projects in the clean technology space.

Cohort demos included:

AWARE VEHICLES, Kansas City, MO: Smart drones for precision agriculture and infrastructure.

P.J. Piper, president & CEO, introduced an automated, innovative mobile docking platform for drones – including launch, recovery, and data transmission and charging – combined with artificial intelligence (AI) for the real-time study of farmland – down to moisture levels in individual plants - and infrastructure often in remote locations. https://www.awarevehicles.com/

BUILT ROBOTICS, San Francisco, CA: Autonomous construction machinery for efficiency, safety and faster results.

“We’re developing artificial intelligence guidance systems that will enable heavy equipment to operate autonomously,” said Jimmy Kim, Business Operations Lead. “Our focus is on building the software… the brains of the robot… to allow it to operate (heavy equipment) intelligently on job sites, and equipping them with the same capabilities and sensibilities that a human operator would have to ensure safety and efficiency. http://www.builtrobotics.com/

ecoSPEARS, Altamonte Springs, FL: Green remediation of PCBs and dioxins in water, soils, and sediments.

Co-founder Serg Albino is working with NASA and Black & Veatch to clean up the environment. “Imagine a world where every human being has access to clean food, clean soil, clean air and clean water,” said Albino, a former NASA aerospace engineer. ecoSPEARS has an exclusive license to leverage NASA’s proprietary technology to extract, contain and destroy PCBs and other contaminants in the environment. https://ecospears.com/

ELECTRIPHI, San Francisco, CA: Fleet electrification for reducing carbon emissions.

“We are on the cusp of the biggest energy transition in history. This is a multi-trillion-dollar transition from oil to electrons,” said Muffi Ghadiali, co-founder and CEO, who unveiled a fleet electrification planning tool. “If all of transportation, as we know it today, would electrify, that will mean we need to double or triple the grid capacity.

“This will disrupt the entire value chain from how energy is produced, how energy is delivered, how energy is consumed. And this is creating amazing opportunities for existing companies to reinvent themselves and for new companies, like us, to be created. The thread that ties all of this together is data, intelligence and an ecosystem of collaboration.” https://electriphi.ai/

EXTENSIBLE ENERGY, Berkeley, CA: Software to reduce demand charges in commercial buildings.

John Powers, Founder & CEO, has unlocked the software that makes solar energy more cost-effective for commercial building owners. It begins with making buildings smarter to better manage their use of energy through demand control.

“The U.S. generates about 2% of its electricity from solar today; in 10 years that will be 20 percent. That’s a $1 trillion opportunity,” Powers said. “It’s the largest energy infrastructure opportunity of the next decade.”

Powers closed his presentation by announcing work toward a reseller agreement with Black & Veatch to bring the Extensible Energy integrated solution, Demand X, to market. “When an innovator like Extensible Energy and an engineering powerhouse like Black & Veatch come together with a solution that addresses the biggest energy opportunity of the next decade, the result for all of us will be a cleaner world.” https://www.extensibleenergy.com/

INFRALYTIKS, Urbandale, IA: Artificial intelligence data analytics for sustainable infrastructure improvement.

“In the last two years more data has been created than in the entire history of mankind. However, only about half of 1 percent of all that data gets analyzed. And that’s where we come in,” said Kevin Prendergast, president. “Machine learning unlocks the value of the data and makes it work for us.”

Applying large-scale, real-time data analytics is the heartbeat of InfraLytiks, including a Black & Veatch assignment to automate the process of adding telecom lines and antennae to utility poles across the country – potentially all 180 million utility poles in the U.S. “There is huge demand for lines on the poles. This is valuable real estate,” he said. “The value for consumers, of course, is connectivity.” https://infralytiks.com/

NOVONUTRIENTS, Sunnyvale, CA: Converting industrial CO2 emissions into protein-rich feed.

Black & Veatch is committed to finding new technologies that will reshape the food and agriculture system as we know it. And, that’s where David Tze, CEO, enters the picture.

NovoNutrients has created a gas fermentation technology that will convert industrial carbon dioxin emissions into protein for aquafeed – the essential food in aquaculture and its farm-raised seafood – that is far more cost-effective and plentiful than aquafeed products now on the market.

With about 40 billion tons per year of greenhouse gases for NovoNutrients to “farm,” Tze said six sectors are well-suited for the NovoNutrients technology. https://www.novonutrients.com/

“These seven companies are on the front lines of the cleantech revolution,” George said. “Through our partnership with LaunchKC and by bringing the cohort together with our professionals at Black & Veatch, this program is an emphatic endorsement about how new technology can be used to solve our biggest resource and infrastructure challenges.”

[FJ31] Love, Loss & Looking Ahead

What is it like working with your spouse? Why is it important to create art that is unique to you? What is the future of Radio Film School? Tune in to find out.

"If we make what we know to be true for ourselves, that edge gives it an individuality that can't be found anywhere else." ~ Kelly Clark, Artist

It has been quite a while since we've had a new episode of the show. A lot has been going on with me. New job (blog editor for Frame.io), moving out of my house, and becoming a nomad. But for this season finale, we have something that'll make you laugh and cry. And isn't that what makes a Radio Film School episode special?

[FJ30] Tell Deeper & More Meaningful Stories with Iceberg Storytelling

 Cache

"For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn." These are the words from Ernest Hemingway's famous 6-word short story. And they're the impetus for today's guest-produced and highly anticipated episode.

"We only give each other the top layers, the top; we dont give each other what lies beneath." ~ Kassim Harris, Director of It Eats You Up

Robert Hardy is a filmmaker and writer who used to write for the popular filmmaking website No Film School. Robert has since left the behemoth site to start his own filmmaker resource for inspiration, Filmmakers Process. I love what Robert is doing with his site. It's very much in line with the spirit and goals of Radio Film School--helping filmmakers become better artists by connecting with what it means to be an artist. As I read the articles on his site, I knew I wanted him to adapt one as a segment for the podcast. That's what you're going to hear on today's episode.

Robert connects with director, cinematographer, colorist and 16mm film fanatic Kassim Norris. His award-winning short film "It Eats You Up" is an excellent example of what Robert calls Iceberg Storytelling. You will be immensely inspired.

[FJ29] Filmmaking, Race Relations & Having Tough Conversations

 Cache

Is a white director the best person to tell what is traditionally a black story? Is that a question that's even fair to ask?

"I was terrified. I'll be totally honest with you. But that's why I knew I needed to make it. I just gotta be bold. 'Cuz why do the safe thing." ~ Spencer Gillis, Director of "Sweep"

Spencer Gillis is an A-camera operator for the hit Netflix series "Orange is the New Black." But his passion is telling stories--stories that drum up tough conversations. Last summer I interviewed him about his Vimeo Staff Pick, Short of the Week winner "Sweep." Today's episode is part of my conversation with Spencer where we discuss the key story points of the film, and what they say about today's society.

[MAD02] Brett Culp: Crowdfunding "Legend"

 Cache

If you're about to start a crowdfunding campaign or are even thinking about one, this is a must-listen episode?

This week we have part 2 of our “Making a Documentary” miniseries, wherein we document the making of my low-budget feature-length documentary "Invisible Illness." During this series, it's my goal to share not only what I've learned, but what other documentary filmmakers have learned.

On this episode, documentary filmmaker Brett Culp is back on the show to talk about the successes and failures he's had with his three crowdfunding film campaigns over the past five years. Brett had a successful IndigGoGo campaign and then later a successful Kickstarter campaign to create is first feature length documentary "Legends of the Knight." He's now in the middle of his second feature length doc and third crowdfunding campaign, this time on IndieGoGo's Generosit.com platform. Among many things, he gives some great insight on when you'd want to use IndieGoGo vs Kickstarter (his answer may surprise if you think you know. It's not just about ow much money you get to keep). And he talks about why he's using Generority.org and for whom that platform is ideal.

Truth in Media Pt.2 - Documentaries [SE25]

 Cache

We follow up our conversation about "YouTube Journalism" with a look at the responsibility of the documentary filmmaker to capture and convey truth. From Nanook to Nuptials.

Robert Flaherty's 1922 docu-drama "Nanook of the North" is widely regarded as the first commercially successful feature length documentary. But even as early as then, controversy surrounded the documentary filmmaking art form as it was revealed that many of the scenes from Nanook were staged, and even the main characters name was not his real name.

Do true documentaries have to be strictly photojournalistic style, hands-off productions that just capture moments and interviews? Is it okay for a documentary filmmaker to use creative editing to re-arrange and juxtapose imagery and audio to better fit his or her narrative, even if such juxtaposition implies something that never really happened? Is a wedding film that has posed shots and scripted voice over any less "real" than a straight-forward document of the day? These are the questions we explore in this episode of Radio Film School: Short Ends.

Film Composer Nick Kirk & Lessons from the Tin-Man [SE Thanksgiving Special]

 Cache

This Thanksgiving Day special brings back one of my favorite episodes from last year, plus an all-new interview with Whitestone Motions Pictures producer and film composer Nick Kirk.

Last year during Thanksgiving, we had a special about the dark origin of the Tin-Man from the Wizard of Oz and the lessons filmmakers and other artists can learn from that story. The basis for that episode was Whitestone Motion Pictures director Brandon McCormick talking about the making of their film "Heartless," their version of the aforementioned Tin-Man origin story. This Thanksgiving we bring that episode back, plus a brand new interview with Whitestone's film composer Nick Kirk. This whole episode is chock full of artistic inspiration.

[RFS:RAW] Adam Westbrook - Video Essayist Extraordinaire

 Cache

Today I have my full, uncut interview with video essayist extraordinaire and multiple Vimeo Staff pick "winner," Adam Westbrook.

The video essay has become one of the most popular forms of edutainment in recent years. Video series like Tony Zhou's "Every Frame a Painting" or Evan Puschak's "Nerdwriter" rack up hundreds of thousands, even millions of views every week. Well, there's a relatively new kid on the block who for the past two years has been making his mark in the video essay world.

Adam Westbrook of Delve.tv only has 8 video essays under his belt, and in just two years, he's generated over a million views, 6 of his 8 videos have garnered the highly coveted Vimeo Staff Pick. I was fortuitous enough to catch Adam on his crest of fame (i.e. as of this writing, he's not too busy or "famous" to do podcast interviews ;) ). In this episode of Radio Film School: RAW, Adam and I discuss:

  • How he got into video essays and his laborious process
  • His life as a freelancer
  • His views on success and pursuing your passion
  • Hitchcock
  • And more.

I promise you'll be inspired and encouraged by what Adam has to say. Special thanks to our show's co-producer Chris Huslage who hosted and lead-produced this episode.

One Man Bands [FJ23]

 Cache

Filmmaking is a collaborative artform. Yet, tens of thousands of filmmakers all over the world shoot projects each week with no dedicated DP, no sound guy, and no assistants. It's just them, a camera, some lenses, lights, and mics. They are one-man/one-woman bands.

<img title="Read more..." src= "data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" alt="" data-wp-more="more" data-wp-more-text="" data-mce-placeholder="1" />This week on the show we hear from a small group of filmmakers who are making waves in the industry despite shooting much, if not most of their work alone -- and in two of the cases, with small, prosumer cameras.

  • There's multi-Vimeo Staff Pick recipient Brandon Li, who's travel docs often feel like narrative shorts.
  • Salvatore "Sal" D'Alia is a New York filmmaker (by way of Italy) who's the brainchild and filmmaker behind Adorama TV's "Through the Lens" Series.
  • And internationally renown director and DP Philip Bloom is back to offer his two cents on what to call yourself if you wear many hats.

Share Your Story with Us

For season 2 of the show, we're looking for filmmakers with stories about overcoming great challenges to complete their projects. Whether or not you succeeded or failed, if you think there's a juicy and educational story with sharing, we want to know about it. SEASON FINALE: 4 Steps to Find Your Voice & Develop a Signature Style [FJ20]

 Cache

For the past 10 months, we've explored a theme that is pertinent to all artists. Let's sum this season up and get the definitive answer to this crucial question.

If you're any kind of artist, but especially if you're one trying to earn a living at your craft, it's vital to both your creative fulfillment as well as your professional longevity, to find "your voice" and develop a signature style. On September 1 of last year, Radio Film School launched with a mission to get to the bottom of this answer. After almost 90 interviews, we have determined what I can safely proclaim is a definitive strategy.

In our season 1 finale, we'll revisit old interviews, introduce new ones, and summarize what essentially amounts to a 4-stop process; and we do it in a way that is classic Radio Film School--from stories to movie clips to an eclectic score, you'll be inspired after hearing this episode.

Be sure to listen past the credits to get a sneak peek at season 2 and the collaboration we're doing with Stillmotion and Muse Storytelling to document the making of their The Remarkable Ones series. It's very cool! Sign up for our email list to be notified when we start. Also, email subscribers will get access and see my short film, "Mixed in America: Little Mixed Sunshine."

Alfred Hitchcock: Anatomy of a Genius [FJ17]

 Cache

There are few filmmakers in the history of the craft who are as revered for their work, and as associated with a particular style, as Sir Alfred Hitchcock.

Hitchcock's work is so distinctive, his name has become an adjective to describe a well-executed, suspense thriller or drama (e.g. David Fincher's "Se7en" is a Hitchcockian thriller filled with mystery, murder, and suspense-filled thrills worthy of the master of suspense himself.)

No doubt that if you're passionate about filmmaking and cinema, you've seen plenty of interviews and/or video essays about Hitch. But as usual, my hope is to share some insight that you might not have heretofore come across.

Superheroes in Cinema Pt. 1: The Art of Adaptation [SE18]

 Cache

Superhero movies are all the rage lately. Believe it or not, there is a lot filmmakers can learn from them. Today is Part 1 in a new Short Ends series.

This week we hear from:

  • Robert Meyer Burnett: A 25+ year veteran of Hollywood, Rob is a director, editor, frequent co-host on Collider Heroes, and self-proclaimed comic book geek. Currently directing the Star Trek fan film Axanar (which raised over $1 million in crowdfunding).
  • Sasha Perl-Raver: movie critic, television journalist, actress, and co-host of Collider TV Talk as well as FX Download.
  • Brett Culp: director of the documentary "Legends of the Knight", a feature-length documentary about the legend and story of Batman inspiring people living with debilitating or even life-threatening illnesses. Through the success of that film, Brett has since founded "The Rising Heroes Project," a non-profit that creates uplifting films to support charitable organizations and inspire communities. They are now working on their follow-up to "Legends" with "Look to the Sky."

BONUS: Ron-On-1 with Dave Dugdale of LearningVideo.com

 Cache

If you're serious about learning video, chances are you've come across one of the videos of Dave Dugdale of LearningVideo.com. Today we have a bonus episode of Radio Film School where I have an in-depth chat with Dave.

When Dave Dugdale talks, companies listen. Why? Because he has one of the most popular video education channels on YouTube—with over 170,000 subscribers and 20+ million views. What sets Dave apart from many other "professionals" in this industry, is that Dave will be the first to tell you he doesn't consider himself a pro. He's just a regular guy trying to learn video and sharing what he learns with the world. He doesn't put on a face and try to make himself cooler or smarter than he really is. He's like the friendly neighborhood dad down the street...who just happens to be a minor YouTube celebrity.

Today's bonus episode of the show is my full, uncut interview with Dave. This was actually an interview I did with Dave for my now defunct podcast, The Solo Creative. I don't want the Solo Creative interviews I did to go to waste, so periodically I'll post them in the Radio Film School feed as bonuses.

In this interview with Dave, he covers how he got started, his strategy for making passive income with his websites, mistakes he’s made, where and how he learns, his philosophy on life and work, and the value of just putting yourself out there. I have no doubt you’ll be inspired.

Other 1-on-1 Filmmaker Interviews: Crossing the 180

If you like these one-on-one style interviews where I dig deep and wide with filmmakers, you'll love my back catalog of Crossing the 180. This was my first filmmakers podcast. Over 100 interviews with filmmakers from just about every facet of the business: from Hollywood DPs and directors, to DSLR luminaries, to wedding "rock stars." Become a Dare Dreamer FM Premium Member, and you get free access to these sets of interviews as I make them available. Go to daredreamer.fm/x180 to learn more.

Get 'er Done: A Mixed in America Documentary Update [FJ16]

 Cache

Today's episode is a must-listen episode for anyone out there who has procrastinated or dragged their butt on getting a project done. An update on my documentary "Mixed in America".<img title="Read more..." src= "data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" alt="" data-wp-more="more" data-wp-more-text="" data-mce-placeholder="1" />

Five years ago I embarked on a personal project to create a short film documentary series about biracial people in America. It's called "Mixed in America" and the first installment of the series is about my daughter, Imahni. The name of the installment is "Little Mixed Sunshine" and it combines a personal interview various b-roll and re-enactments. Well, five years after first interviewing her and even uploading a 1-minute teaser, the project still isn't done.

Out of a desire to educate and inspire other filmmakers and creatives (or, quite possibly, a temporary loss of sanity) I made the decision to share my progress of the film on this podcast. The segment has been cleverly called "Shooting Sunshine." Today you'll hear the latest installment of the series with an update on where I am exactly with "Mixed in America." Show regular JD Cochran is back to give me some "tough love." If you've ever dragged your feet on getting a project done, particularly a film project, this is the episode for you.

Technology & Filmmaking: This Is Not Your Mother's NAB Wrap-up [FJ15]

 Cache

Last month we had one of the most attended NAB Shows ever. But in true Radio Film School style, our "coverage" of it won't be what you expect.

The National Association of Broadcasters (aka NAB) had its annual expo and convention last month. There were over 100,000 people in attendance. And as is the case every year, NAB was the place to find all the most anticipated tech, tools, and toys that will be the next, over-hyped "game-changer." This week on the show we're going to talk about technology and the role it plays in the lives of storytellers and filmmakers. But if you are expecting a run-down of the latest and greatest cameras, drones, lenses, microphones, digital recorders and capture cards, I'm sorry to disappoint you. You won't find that here.

However, if you enjoy a deeper conversation about technology and how we as filmmakers relate to it, the good and the bad, then sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

This week we hear from:

Whiteston Motion Pictures Making "History" [FJ014]

 Cache

The inspirational rise and fall (and rise again) story of how Whitestone Motion Pictures came from the brink of throwing in the towel, to shooting a project for The History Channel.

If you've been listening to this podcast since the beginning, you know that there is only one person who's been featured on the show more times than show regulars JD and Yolanda. That person is Atlanta filmmaker Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion Pictures. After posting last week's bonus episode about Brandon's incredible database of feature film screenshots, it occurred to me that out of all the episodes in which he's appeared, I've never really given any kind of in-depth story about the history of Whitestone and his journey as a filmmaker. So today, that's what I have. This week's episode is a tad longer than normal, but I promise you'll savor every inspirational minute.

We cover such topics as:

  • How and why they do the kind of work they do
  • His affection for nostalgic and period pieces
  • His thoughts on artists vs. artisans and the significance of the difference
  • The trials and tribulations of almost making their first feature film and the lessons he learned
  • How the History Channel project came about
  • And of course, it wouldn't be a Brandon McCormick episode without some profoundly poignant ending that makes you wanna go out and conquer the world!

  • Tiny Little Words: The touching story about the first heart transplant. All shot in one take.
  • Blood on My Name: This was the film that got Brandon and Nick meetings in Hollywood: their "southern gothic Americana folklore musical."

  • My follow-up "Crossing the 180" interview with Brandon about the making of the Whitestone film "The Candy Shop: A Fairytale about the Sexual Exploitation of Children", using candy as a metaphor for under-aged girls. It's a powerful and creative film about an important topic. It stars the famous character actor Doug Jones ("Silver Surfer", "Pan's Labyrinth", and "Arrow", to name a paltry few) as The Candy Man.

"Filmmakers with Style" - The Coen Bros. [FJ11]

 Cache

Today we begin a series looking at filmmakers whose work is so distinctive, you know the filmmaker within moments of watching one of their films; and the Coen Brothers have one of the most signature styles in contemporary filmmaking. Love 'em or hate 'em, when you come out of a Coen Brothers film, you will be talking about it.In this episode we hear from music video directors

In this episode we hear from music video directors Nathan Corona and Isaac Deitz; show regular Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion Pictures; and movie and entertainment journalists David Griffin and Clarke Wolfe. This discussion is a fascinating one; one that will give insight into what makes their work unique, and what we as filmmakers and artists can learn from them in the development of our own craft.

Bridging "The Gap" [RFS-FJ008]

 Cache

Every artist deals with it in their career—the difference between what they envision, and what they actually create. How to deal?

There's a well-known video of "This American Life" host Ira Glass sharing his thoughts about what he calls "The Gap." It's the difference between your taste (what you know to be good work) and your talent (what it is you're actually able to create, which is often not as good as you'd like it to be). This week, on the first main "Radio Film School" episode of 2016, we dive into this issue. You'll hear from Sam Mestman, CEO of We Make Movies; Ryan Booth, filmmaker, DP and creator of the music performance web series "Serial Box Presents"; and Patrick Moreau, co-founder of Stillmotion and LearnStory.org. If you've ever faced "the Gap," this is the episode for you.

"Shooting Sunshine" Returns

We also have the next installment of my "Shooting Sunshine" segment. The behind the scenes look at the making of "Little Mixed Sunshine", the first episode in my short film documentary series about bi-racial people. In it, I answer the question: "Why is this film STILL NOT DONE?!"

Thanksgiving "Wizard of Oz" Special: Lessons from the Dark Origin of the Tin Man

 Cache

This week we have a Thanksgiving holiday special episode of Radio Film School that will give you a profound outlook on life and your art.<img title="Read more..." src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" alt="" data-wp-more="more" data-wp-more-text="" data-mce-placeholder="1" />

Growing up as a kid, one of my favorite Thanksgiving Day pastimes was watching "The Wizard of Oz" on TV with my mom and brother. (Largely because I was hopelessly infatuated with Dorothy.) This week we have a special episode of the show where we look at the history of that MGM classic. We'll hear fun stories from me and Sky City Haya producer Tom Wineland about our experiences with that movie; and most importantly, friend of the show Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion Pictures gives us a profound and poignant lesson based on the dark origin story of the Tin Man.

Short Ends - "It's Personal: The Power & Purpose of Passion Projects"

 Cache

If you've ever had a desire to start (or finish) that passion project, THIS is the episode for you.

In all the years I've interviewed creatives from filmmaking to photography to music, a common theme I always hear is the necessity and desire to produce passion projects and personal work. In today's "Short Ends" episode, you will be inspired to complete your own. You'll glean insights into both the artistic and commercial justifications for doing personal work.

I follow up on my own journey to produce my passion project "Mixed in America," first referenced in RFS episode 3 "S.O.S. Atlantis." You'll hear me share some raw emotions via audio diaries I kept during the production.

You'll hear from Vimeo darlings Dan Riordan and Dana Saint of Gnarly Bay Productions. They share why they do personal work and how it's helped their business.

Canadian filmmaker Brent Foster of Foster Visuals shares how regret led him to produce his popular personal project "While I'm Here: The Legacy Project."

Finally, you'll be inspired by the words of Atlanta filmmaker Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion Pictures on why he perseveres as a filmmaker, despite dark times.

RFS002.5 - Short Ends: "Plan E from Outer Space" (ft. Sam Mestman, Ryan Connolly & Phil Bloom)

 Cache

A film set is kinda like a spaceship barreling through space. Something almost always goes wrong.

This week we have one of my favorite episodes of the show so far. It's fun, funny, yet still packs a potent and poignant punch. We hear from We Make Movies CEO Sam Mestman and Film Riot host Ryan Connolly about some of the most disastrous film shoots they've directed. As is always the case in life, from these challenges came great lessons. Then that international dapper DP Philip Bloom ties it all very nicely with a bow at the end. This episode is quite special. Enjoy!

The Winning Films of the 15th Annual HUMP! Film Festival

 Cache
by Dan Savage

The 15th Annual HUMP! Film Festival opened in Seattle, Olympia, Portland, San Francisco, and—for the first time ever—Vancouver, B.C. earlier this month with a brand new slate of 21 amazing films. And after three weeks, dozens of screenings, and thousands of audience ballots cast and counted, we're ready to announce the winners of the 2019 HUMP! Awards!

Since 2004 HUMP! has been the film festival that makes it possible for people to be porn stars for a weekend in a theater without becoming porn stars for eternity on the internet. Although some HUMP! filmmakers and performers choose to release their own films online, most HUMP! filmmakers and performers don't—and we never release HUMP! films online and destroy all of our master copies at the end of the annual tour. Which means at HUMP! audiences get see films and enjoy performers they'll never see or enjoy anywhere else!

image0.jpeg

This year's amazing collection of HUMP! films will tour to over fifty cities over the next year so you still have a chance to catch the festival in 2020! There will also be encore presentations of the this year's festival in Seattle on May 9 and Portland on April 4. You can already order tickets for the 2020 HUMP! Tour and encore presentations at humpfilmfest.com.

Only audiences at the opening HUMP! Festival get to vote for their favorite films and give out the HUMP! Awards. Audience members in Seattle got to hang out and cast their ballots in our swanky new HUMP! Lounge, a pop-up night club where HUMPers could discuss their favorite films over a drink, cast their ballots, and shoot commemorative Hump 2020 Boomerangs. We’re planning on opening the Hump lounge next year for all Seattle shows, not just Friday & Saturday screenings, so we'll see you there!

BEST KINK RUNNER UP ($1,000 Prize): Brunch on Bikes "Freshly-fucked foodies get a Special Pancake Delivery."

BEST SEX ($2,000 Prize): Wildfire "Inhibitions are burned to dust while this hedonistic group lusts around the fire."
BEST SEX RUNNER UP ($1,000 Prize): Good Kitty "When the kitten collar comes out, so do the sacred oils and earthly delights in this cunnilingual ceremony."

BEST HUMOR ($2,000 Prize): Best in Show "Mountains! Bondage! Flash paper! Puppets! Paint! A couple attempts to pack every winning HUMP! trope into their five minute film."
BEST HUMOR RUNNER UP ($1,000 Prize): Just Four Fans Only "When a group of friends decides to film an orgy in a Vegas hotel room, an unexpected participant slips into the mix."

BEST IN SHOW ($10,000 Grand Prize): Best in Show

HUMP! JURY AWARD ($1,000): Lost & Found "After making it through the pain of infertility and miscarriage and finally becoming a parent, a woman goes on a mission of exploration and discovery."

Congrats to the winners and a big thank you to everyone who submitted a film, to everyone who came out to see HUMP! this year, and to all our HUMP! hosts: Betty Wetter in Seattle, Wm. Steven Humphrey and Kate Murphy in Portland, the HUMP! Team in San Francisco, and Hattie Hotpants in Olympia. And HUMP! couldn't happen without HUMP! producer Tracey "Peaches" Cataldo.

SUBMIT A FILM FOR THE 16th ANNUAL HUMP! FILM FESTIVAL

It’s never too early to start working on your HUMP! submission for the 16th Annual HUMP! Film Festival! Go to humpfilmfest.com/submit for more details. Making and submitting a film for HUMP! is fun and easy and there's no fee to enter HUMP! We're also adding new categories and more prize money to the HUMP! Awards for next year! For years people have been asking us to add an award for the most artistic film and so next year, for the first time, we're adding a Most Creative/Artistic ($2000 first place, $1000 runner up) category for HUMP! audiences to vote on. We're also adding two new Jury Awards for Outstanding Performances ($1000 each), bringing the total prize package at HUMP! to $25,000! And all films selected to be in HUMP! get a cut of all ticket sold on the annual HUMP! tour!

Amber O'Hearn is a data scientist from Canada. When she came to America, she fiddled with diet to figure out what was best for her physical and mental health. Originally standard for vanity - vegetarianism was not working, nor was aerobics. This was around 1997. Check out her presentation here: http://www.ketotic.org/2018/04/ketosis-without-starvation-human.html Amber has been on the carnivore diet for 10 years now. She is an original! After her pregnancies, she gained weight on 'garden variety' keto diet, so decided to switch things up. The weight dropped off immediately, and it helped her mood, too. Steak is a staple. Her first meal is usually between 11 and 1. It'll be eggs, a steak, chicken thighs, duck breast, ribs, a burger, or something like this. She also eats lots of fish. There's a lot of variety! Sometimes, she will do what she calls a "Ribeye Reset." If she isn't feeling great, or feels like she's stalling, she will only eat ribeye for a few days. FAT DOC IS OUT Go watch it now! Check out his lecture: "Ruminant Reality: Livestock, Human Health and Environment" here: https://denversdietdoctor.com/dr-peter-ballerstedt-ruminant-reality-diet-human-health-environment/ He has studied the needs of humans and diet. A low carb diet with plenty of meat is important. We evolved because we ate meat. He and Vinnie met at Low Carb USA! Always wearing a pair of cowboy boots. AGRICULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT All of agriculture makes up only 9% of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. Only 2% for cattle. US is very efficient! Transportation, alternatively, makes up 25%. People conflate US and world states as well as various statistics. Ruminants are important for environmental health. HUNTING AND CONSERVATION These two can go hand in hand. For example, there is an overpopulation of deer in many places. Culling these populations can be important so they do not starve, spread disease, etc. The end result of people not hunting and not eating meat will be more human and animal suffering. Experiential marketing won't be viewed as effective until measurement gets fixed

 Cache

Liz Richardson, managing partner at behavioural communications agency HeyHuman, explains that problems with measurement has led many brands to only focus on reach, not engagement. But if experiential marketing wants to be taken seriously, something needs to change.

“Advertising is dead . . . The future is storymaking.”

That’s according to the CMO of Mastercard, who recently set forward his brand’s renewed focus on providing brand experiences.

Mastercard is not alone in its approach, and we’ve recently seen more and more brands dedicate their ad budgets to experience creation.

Over the course of the past six months alone, we’ve seen Old El Paso literally power a restaurant with conversation; The Independent turn Brexit into an experience at The People’s March; and a Hendricks Gin townhouse filled with pygmy goats and miniature cocktails.

It’s easy to see why more brands are investing into this space, because experiential marketing is an incredibly effective method of driving brand and product reappraisal. People generally only engage with products they know, so immersive brand experiences that bring consumers face-to-face with the product in an innovative, creative way are a great method of building an audience.

And an experience is likely to stay in the memory far longer than your average TV, social or billboard campaign.

Although experiential marketing has made great strides in recent years, there is still one key barrier that’s preventing it from reaching maturity. Namely, the measurement problem.

Focus on engagement, not reach

Measurement is a recurring thorn in the side of experiential marketers like me, because there isn’t a single standardised way of monitoring the success of a campaign. This means that brands have to find solutions which will work best for them. There’s no point in launching an experiential campaign unless you have a robust strategy in place to measure its effectiveness.

One of the most common mistakes we see is when brands seek to measure the success of their experiential campaigns by reach, instead of engagement. Often, there is too much focus placed on the cost per sample and how many people a campaign reaches, and not enough on the quality of the interaction between the brand and its target audience.

At a time of tightening budgets and Brexit uncertainty, brands are more cautious with their marketing spend than ever. As a result, they need to activate in a way that ensures a guaranteed return on investment.

Yet they can be misguidedly lured by high-footfall times and locations, because they think the more people their brand can come into contact with, the more value the activation will deliver. And the result is brands heading en masse for rush hour at Waterloo, or Piccadilly at Christmas.

Yes, you may reach more people at these locations, and that this may help brands massage their reach stats for the case study. But, how many people are actually paying attention? And how many meaningful interactions are you building with consumers?

Smaller, and in some cases, more niche locations and events, can prove a better option. For instance, earlier this year, Swedish oat drink company Oatly activated a straight-talking ‘ditch milk’ campaign at the London Coffee Festival. The brand owned the (relatively niche) event by investing £250k in a targeted OOH spend.

The digital footprint

From an experiential marketer’s perspective, gaining traction on digital can also prove an enticing way of measuring the success of an infamously difficult-to-measure marketing spend.

This is why your experiences should be designed with sharing strategies in mind, and why your activation should never live and die on the day it takes place.

But brands shouldn’t force social sharing down consumers’ throats. If you want your experiences to receive organic amplification from attendees, then there needs to be a clear value exchange.  Your visitors need to want to share the content from your experiences, and this means you need to create experiences that are unique and relevant.

We recently worked with Diageo to create a multi-sensory playground called Guinness Flavour Rooms, where people could explore the multi-dimensional flavours of Guinness. The event was a success over social media because we offered users something immersive and impactful to share with their followers.

Measure what matters

However, while monitoring social shares is important, it’s not the full picture. At HeyHuman we have a dedicated neuromarketing division to measure the impact of our campaigns at every stage of the journey, because it allows us to have a complete understanding of how our target audiences think and behave.

Without doing this deep dive, there is a danger that you’ll miss the insights that will transform your campaigns into ones that drive purchase intent.

This is just one way of measuring the success of an activation, and there may be others which will work better depending on what insight you’re looking to gleam from your measurement strategy.

Regardless of which measurement technique you use though, there is one crucial factor that you should use to judge the success of any experiential campaign; has your experience changed your audience’s behaviour?

Ultimately, if your experience doesn’t change this, then there was no point doing it in the first place.

Paroles de Pilger

 Cache

Henry Kissinger l'a joué.

(Castro barks at an aide who forgot papers he wanted. This is during the stopover in Camaguey. From Life magazine - Castro in Triumphant Advance to Havana - January 19, 1959 )

A Melba Hernández:

("Carta a J.A. Lucena.", New York, 9 de octubre de 1885. Tomo 1.

Have a chat with us – how to create effective conversations for chatbots

 Cache
  • Grüezi, Bonjour and hello out there! So nice to have you here 😃 I am Liipbot and I am happy to share my expertise on how to create effective conversations for chatbots with you. Ready? So here is what I have for you:
  • Chatbots intro
    Writing tips
    Pros and Cons
    Project insight
  • Let’s start with a short intro about chatbots first. And let’s keep it crispy. Here’s what you need to know: There are mainly two types of chatbots: (1) chatbots that learn and (2) chatbots that don’t.
  • (1) Chatbots that learn are based on artificial intelligence – uh, buzzword! When they get an answer, they create algorithms out of this answer. With every further question, they verify or falsify the algorithms constantly. And that’s how those machine learning-powered chatbots can participate in complex conversations.
  • (2) Chatbots that don't learn are rule-based. They have a set of questions and answers at their disposal. Thus they follow a predefined path. This plannable set-up makes it easier from a content perspective. Usually, they are the go-to solution for businesses as they are relatively simple to implement and serve a very clear purpose.
  • So far, so good?
  • Yes. Are there any other differences?
  • Oh yes, there are! Chatbots can be found built in a messenger like Whatsapp or Slack or as a standalone application. We also distinguish between graphic interfaces like chatbots and voice assistants. Well… surprisingly I prefer chatbots 😬
  • So yes, I guess that’s it in a nutshell. Shall we continue with my ingenious writing tips?
  • Take me there.
  • Chatbots intro
    Writing tips
    Pros and Cons
    Project insight
  • Straight forward, I like that. So let’s dive right in. Ready for my tips on how to write for chatbots?
  • Yes! Let’s do this.
  • Alright. So here we go:
Ingenious tip #1: Know your users.
Who is interacting with your chatbot? In which context? And on which device? This is crucial because you need to know who you’re addressing your content to and in which situation. Do some user research and maybe even outline a user journey – possibly with the help of your fellow UX team members.
  • Knowing your users will have an impact on the complexity of your content as well as your tone of voice. Need an example? Be trustworthy for e-banking clients vs. speaking everyday language with lots of emojis for teenage fashion shoppers. Also, the context is essential: users in a crowded train on their way to work need succinct and quick messages vs. relaxed users on a sunday morning who even love some prose like what I do here.
  • Ready for the second tip?
  • Yes, please!
  • Well, here we go:
Ingenious tip #2: Use conversational language.
This might seem rather obvious but is often done wrong. When writing for chatbots, think of a real conversation and follow a conversational structure: Start with a greeting, end with a closing, ask questions in between, acknowledge and comment on the answers like yes, yay, true, no way, you name it and – very important: Don’t forget to introduce the chatbot and its purpose. It’s always nice to know to whom you are talking, right? It will lead to less awkward human-machine-interaction.
  • But most of all: Keep it short. As we know from web writing in general none of us fancies reading a super long copy. And again, think of a real conversation: Balance listening and active talking. D’accord?
  • Not really. You also made a very long point right now 😃
  • Gotcha 😅 But I am sure you too will stumble upon more complex content that can’t be explained in one sentence. In that case, there is a secret key on how to make your text more compact. Ha, curious?
  • Tell me!
  • Be implicit. As in spoken human-to-human conversations, it is not necessary to explicitly name every detail as we have all kinds of codes for situations. Of course, clarity comes first but to create a dynamic flow this so-called conversational implicature is very essential. Subconsciously our brains will decode the message based on context, experience and a cooperative mindset.
  • 🤔 Can you give an example for this?
  • Of course. Here comes one by James Giangola from the Google Conversations Design Team:

  • But why the heck should I use those conversational impli-somethings?
  • You mean conversational implicatures 🤓 They make an interaction more fun as it plays with our minds. You humans usually like that.
  • If you say so 😉 What else is useful to know?
  • Well, besides implicit phrases, there are some other elements of a smooth conversation, for example, abbreviations, exclamations, informal expressions. Even though it is a written piece, chatbot conversations shouldn’t aim at formal standards for written texts. They should feel natural. Always remember it is a conversation, right?
  • That said also don’t forget to include a sense of humour. Why? It makes conversations more lively, and it’s much more fun to interact with. But keep in mind 🚨: Only if it fits your purpose and your company’s tone of voice.
  • Sounds reasonable.
  • Exactly. This also leads to another tip:
Ingenious tip #3: Use consistent language
A chatbot becomes implausible when the language differs during the conversation. Cheeky and with a wink at the beginning, serious and dry at the end? Come on, that’s not comprehensible. Try to create a chatbot persona and link the conversation to all the attributes of that persona. The same applies to specific terms and vocabulary. Always use the same, consistent wording – otherwise, you will confuse your counterpart unnecessarily.
  • True. What else is relevant to know?
  • Ingenious tip #4: Avoid dead ends. Technological and language wise.
As a copywriter who writes the chatbot conversation, always consider the flow and different paths of your storytelling. The worst thing to happen in a chatbot conversation: dead ends. Make sure to set up a valuable error message or define trigger words that lead to another part of the conversation. Please don’t use the usual «Sorry for the inconvenience bla bla», because again: You are in a conversation. Therefore it should feel like one.
  • Better go for «Damn! I am really sorry. That doesn’t seem to work.» And always provide a possible solution like «May I report that to my colleagues at the office?» so that language-wise there are no dead ends, too. Alright?
  • Alright. I am slowly getting familiar with it. What else do you have for me?
  • Cool! I take that as a compliment 😃 I still have three more advice for you.
Ingenious tip #5: Use visual content.
Emojis, Gifs, you name it 🤪🤑🤩🤫🤐🤤😷🥳 Whatever eases the conversation and makes it more appealing to read. Especially in longer conversations, it makes sense to sprinkle some visual content to entertain your counterpart.
  • But come on, that’s not conversational. In a face-to-face conversation, there are no emojis or gifs.
  • True. But in face-to-face you have mimics and gestures. That’s what all these visual assets are about: To add another layer of expression to your chatbot conversation. But of course only if it’s appropriate for the topic. If your chatbot is about sensitive data like medical information or your bank account one would probably be very irritated by a poo emoji 💩.
  • Hm, okay, convinced. What’s next?
  • The next tip is more about how to organise yourself when writing a chatbot conversation:
Ingenious tip #6: Use a conversational template.
I can tell by experience: It helps so much if you don’t just write paragraph by paragraph in your usual doc file but use a diagram to visualise the conversational flow. It quickly gets confusing when you provide several options to choose from. A template keeps you on track – and helps to identify dead ends quickly.
  • I’ve never thought of this. That’s a good tip, thanks.
  • And now, get ready for the grand finale:
Ingenious tip #7: Do user testing.
A proof of concept always helps, right? After drafting your conversation, it’s worth to spend some time (and 💰) on user testing. Let a group of future users have a chat with the bot. Or at least some of your colleagues or friends. You will be surprised how easily and effectively you will detect shortcomings.
  • If there is no time (and 💰) for user testing, at least read the conversation out loud. Not quite close to a user testing but at least a first indicator for barriers in the conversation flow.
  • Okay, now you know all my ingenious tips. I hope I didn’t promise too much?
  • Nope. Thanks for all the tips. I want to dig even deeper into do’s and dont’s of conversational language. Can you elaborate on that?
  • Oh, I would love to! But as said before, chatbots should be very to the point. And we have two more topics coming up. But let me recommend you this Guide to Conversational Design for more details. But now - are you ready to move on?
  • Okay, let’s continue.
  • Chatbots intro
    Writing tips
    Pros and Cons
    Project insight
  • It is always important to check potentials and risks, right? There are two perspectives on the topic: the user and the business perspective. What interests you the most?
  • The user perspective, of course.
  • Good choice 👍 From a user perspective, a chatbot offers lots of advantages. First of all: It is always accessible, 24 hours, seven days a week. That’s nice, isn‘t it? Compared to its human counterpart that’s a big plus if you’re looking for information, support or guidance.
  • Ah, talking about guidance: A chatbot also navigates the users much easier to their specific goal than conventional navigation. No need of clicking through endless pages, no need for skim reading, yay! Just an effective guided search. What a relief in our busy times.
  • And – last but not least – a chatbot adds a human touch to the plain and often mundane presentation of information on the web. It’s much nicer to use a question like «where do you live?» instead of just «address» in conversational forms. This matches with the human need for socialising and interaction and users will feel much more delighted to browse, what else can we wish for, right?
  • Absolutely! But how about the business perspective?
  • It’s all about the money, I knew it. Okay, just kidding 😂 The business perspective is important, too, and of course, your investment in a chatbot needs to pay off. And it really does. I’ll tell you why.
  • If you use the chatbot for support purposes, for example in CRM or as a sales assistant, it will save you time and money. Chatbots can handle unlimited requests at a time. In contrast, a human employee can only focus on one or maybe two requests. So service costs will be reduced, and employees can focus on the more complex and tricky cases.
  • What else? It’s also another great opportunity to strengthen your brand identity and convey your tone of voice. This can be done much easier in a conversation than in a plain text – but it is also much harder to achieve 😃 Either you create a chatbot persona that personifies a certain aspect of your brand values or one that is aiming at a specific target group.
  • Not to forget: The fame and fortune! Conversational interfaces are still a hot topic. Let’s push your innovative tech reputation 💪
  • Okay, but that were only advantages, right? Didn’t you mention cons before, too?
  • Smart you 🤓 Yes, you are right. Of course, there are some downsides or risks to keep in mind. First of all, the question should be – as in every other UX-project: Does this solution add value to my purpose? If you just want to display your opening hours, there’s no need to dive into a conversation with a chatbot.
  • The same applies to your specific business case. As mentioned before it might be inappropriate in some cases to have a chat with a chatbot when a real human is needed.
  • Another shortcoming is the limited interaction palette for rule-based chatbots. Man, that can be annoying 🙄 The solution is as simple as expensive: AI-driven chatbot. Really smart chatbots are not cheap.
  • And finally, as this is a conversation about how to write for chatbots, I have to mention the potential risk that goes with writing conversations for it. If a chatbot is not well-written meaning not user-centred, it can evoke very awkward interactions. Don’t try to be funny and cool if you are not. But thank goodness, there are experts for that 😬
  • Hehe, I got your hint 😬
  • 😃 Sorry for the hidden agenda. But my colleagues are amazing! Don’t trust me? Let me give you an example, a little sneak peek, of a real cool project they did.
  • Chatbots intro
    Writing tips
    Pros and Cons
    Project insight
  • I prefer hands-on over theory so let’s sneak into a real case. The project in a nutshell: My colleagues at Liip created a conversational chatbot called Kafibot (which translates to coffee-bot) for Zurich based energy provider Energie 360°. It was an internal communication project and aimed at bringing employees with common interests together to drink coffee. Pretty nice of e360, isn’t it?
  • Wow, that’s really cool. I would love to have that in my company, too. Why did you choose a chatbot for this?
  • Well, as the whole project encourages exchange between employees, my colleagues thought of an equally interactive and conversational approach for the process.
  • Sounds reasonable. Can I have a look at it?
  • Yes, yes, yes, so excited! Here you go 🚀

  • Isn’t that funky? Did I make you even more curious?
  • Indeed. That looks pretty cool already.
  • Well nice, then stay tuned. There will be more about the project coming soon, I promise 😃
  • Now that you got an insight into a chatbot conversation project, you know about chatbots in general and the pros and cons, and you gained some good tips on how to write for a chatbot… I think I am done with my job here. Are there any questions left?
  • Uh, I guess you answered a lot. Thanks 🙏 I feel much more confident in starting my own conversational interface project now.
  • Oh wow! I am flattered 🤗 If you want to know even more, here are some excellent resources that I used for my recommendations:

Learn how to build your own chatbot (written by my fellow colleague Thomas Ebermann)

  • Awesome. So courteous and user-centred! 😃
  • Yup, that’s my purpose. Thanks a lot, fellow chatbot friend 🙏 It was great to have a conversation with you. Arrivederci 👋

The haphazard coming of Christmas

 Cache

By Jim Somerville

“Imagine a world where Christmas doesn’t come on December 25, but with the first snowfall of the year,” begins Jim Somerville, Pastor of Richmond’s First Baptist Church and co-founder of A Sermon for Every Sunday. In this sermon from Matthew 24:36-44 he says: “It would be strange, wouldn’t it, living in a world like that? It would be so different from the scheduled way we celebrate Christmas now. But it would be much more like that unscheduled first Christmas, and almost exactly like the unscheduled second coming of Christ. ‘But about that day and hour no one knows,’ Jesus says, ‘neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.’”

This sermon is from A Sermon for Every Sunday, a series of lectionary-based video sermons designed for use in worship, Bible study, small groups, Sunday school classes or for individual use.

“Hidden Figures”

New Logo and Identity for Hudson by Siegel+Gale

Established in 1987, Hudson (previously Hudson Group) is one of the largest travel retailers in North America with more than 1,000 stores in airports, commuter hubs, landmarks, and tourist locations. Most travelers will recognize them for the Hudson and Hudson News stores, their flagship brand, but they are also responsible for the retail airport experiences of brands like Dunkin, Coach, Pinkberry, FAO Schwartz, and more. From a few newsstands in New York's LaGuardia Airport when it first opened, Hudson is now present in over 80 airports and employs more than 10,000 people. The company has been owned by Dufry -- the Basel, Switzerland-based leading travel retailer that operates many of the ubiquitous duty-free shops -- since 2008 and has been a publicly-traded company since 2018. Last week, Hudson introduced a new identity designed by Siegel+Gale.

"While Hudson's original logo reflected the times in which it was created, and has served the company well, it's time to introduce travelers to Hudson's new look, feel and identity that reinforces our foundation and showcases where our brand is going," said Hope Remoundos, EVP and Chief Marketing Officer at Hudson. "Our new identity is sophisticated and confident, with a welcoming visual representation of the company's DNA that perfectly spotlights our people, brands, locations and, most importantly, our customers, and strengthens Hudson's authentic connection to travelers."

The design of the new logo represents the four cornerstones -- [ travel convenience, specialty retail, Duty Free and the most-recent addition, food and beverage] -- of the business as windows, which, together, form an iconic letter "H."

The old logo was mostly bad... the "H" and "G" interlocking could have been decent with better handling but the overall typography was lame and the giant swoosh was a perfect example of why swooshes need to be avoided in logos. The new logo smartly leaves everything from the old logo behind and introduces a more contemporary presence with an abstracted "H" hidden inside four rectangle shapes. I don't love it but I do like it well enough. Once you see the "H" it's then a little hard to find a visual connection for the four objects because let's face it, no one is going to go "Of course, those are the four cornerstones of Hudson" so I feel like they are a little ambiguous but I do like how they convert them into products in some of the applications (shown further down). The wordmark is fine... a little old school, but it can perhaps tie back to the company's newsstand roots. The blue is a lighter shade of that blue and it's neither good or bad, it just is.

New Logo and Identity for Hudson by Siegel+Gale
Logos of the two main retail brands of Hudson, which I understand will remain as they are.

What might be a problem down the road is having three "Hudson" brands out in the marketplace: there is Hudson, Hudson News, and now another Hudson which is not like the first Hudson because the latter Hudson doesn't have a retail presence as the former Hudson does yet you might still see the latter's branded items in the former as well as in Hudson News. See? It could be a problem. Unless Hudson and Hudson News change their logo to match the new Hudson, which I don't believe is the case.

The visual identity works as a fluid, modular asset, ideal for showcasing the brands that Hudson shares with travelers--the delightful surprises they have in store--in new and unexpected ways. The color palette helps Hudson stand out from its competitors. The team chose vastly more diverse and colorful expressions for Hudson's brand communications: just enough options to keep things feeling fresh, yet coherent. Using the logo as a supergraphic helps support the idea of how integral Hudson is to the traveler's experience, by appearing as a window framing the most memorable moments in travelers' journeys, and their end destinations. The new brand signals Hudson's immense expertise, illuminates its vast portfolio, celebrates team members and displays its understanding of travelers.

The applications are fine in terms of layout and design -- I like how they use the "H" icon as a framing/background device and the typography is passable -- but the photography is way too corny and the copywriting too contrived. As I mentioned earlier, the one solid idea in the applications is replacing the rectangles in the icon with products, as it hints at the delivery of myriad goods by Hudson.

Overall, this is certainly an improvement over the old and even though I have no examples of the old identity in application, based on the old logo I can't imagine them being very exciting and although this doesn't fall in the exciting spectrum either, it's a serviceable identity with some untapped potential.
