The Suburbs Are Kicking the Animals Out. Enter the Animal Rescue Squad.

 Cache

The Suburbs Are Kicking the Animals Out. Enter the Animal Rescue Squad.ATLANTA -- In a small suburban park on a muggy morning a few months ago, a woman in elbow-length gloves was armed with a net, a loaf of bread and a tall cardboard box, all in hopes of catching an elusive goose. The goose, whose left leg was tightly wound in fishing line, walked with a pronounced hobble; as it swam, the leg dragged listlessly in the water. Yet despite its condition, animal instinct prevailed. The goose simply refused to be caught.Cindy Rooker, the would-be captor, hoped to retrieve the recalcitrant Canada goose, tuck it into the cardboard box she had brought, and drive it to a wildlife rehabilitation center a few hours away in South Carolina, where the bird would receive medical attention. But after several attempts, Rooker knew it was time to call it a day. Birds are easily stressed, and waterfowl have an inconvenient and frustrating knack for flying right into the center of a pond. Also, she didn't bring a kayak this time.A police officer who lives in Canton, Georgia, Rooker, 56, volunteers for the Wildlife Resources and Education Network (WREN). She started working with the organization at the beginning of the summer, and has since completed about 10 transports, crisscrossing the northern half of the state with the likes of orphaned baby opossums and injured hawks in the cab of her Nissan pickup truck.WREN connects people like Rooker -- committed animal lovers in the Southeast with spare time, spare gas money and an empty back seat -- with wildlife rehabbers and veterinary clinics that lack the resources to transport an animal on their own.In other words, Rooker and her fellow transporters are Mother Nature's unpaid Uber drivers.Robert Jones, an animal lover whose other pursuits include military history and small-business consulting, started WREN with Liz Crandall in 2016. The two met at the Southeastern Raptor Center at Auburn University, where Crandall worked and Jones volunteered and, later, interned. They formed WREN as a wildlife educational initiative, but with time, sharpened their focus largely on transportation after seeing the same challenge day after day: More people seemed to be stumbling upon injured wildlife every passing year, but few wanted to transport the animals to rehabbers themselves."It's a really large gap," said Jones, 34, who now lives in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and is the executive director of the Tilted Tavern Animal Sanctuary. Nonprofits like the raptor center don't always have the resources or staff to send someone out to fetch an animal, especially one that's hours away. That's where WREN -- and a handful of similar organizations, like the Connecticut Emergency Animal Response Service -- step in.When I first spoke with Crandall, 46, by phone, she had just finished up "a fawn call" (which, at least in this instance, is not a pun). Crandall, who is the assistant director of the Tilted Tavern Animal Sanctuary, said that she fields roughly a dozen calls a day and manages a handful of transports each week, often across state lines. That number is increasing each year, for reasons both dismal and hopeful: While humans are pushing into wildlife territory more and more, some of them are also becoming more aware of, and attuned to, the wildlife in their backyards."I think people are more conscientious," Crandall said. "They want to help more."WREN uses Slack to communicate to its volunteers and manage logistics, like making sure each transporter has an appropriate container for the animal (typically a cardboard box or a lidded Rubbermaid bin with holes for oxygen).Driving a captured animal requires total silence in the car -- no phone conversations, no podcasts or music -- sometimes for hours on end."It takes a lot for people to commit to something where they'll get a call maybe once a month, or maybe every day," Crandall said. Working with nature has inherent challenges and frustrations. It requires patience and flexibility, not to mention thick skin: Not every case has a happy ending. One of the organizations WREN works with is the Chattahoochee Nature Center, where Kathryn Dudeck works as wildlife director. Dudeck said that the center fields 400 to 500 phone calls a month, and takes in more than 650 animals for rehab each year. Those cases range from natural causes, like nestlings blown out of their nests in a hurricane, to injury explicitly at the hands of humans: an owl with buckshot in its wings, a red-tailed hawk hit by a car. "Needless to say, Mother Nature didn't invent the vehicle or the gun," Dudeck said. "So, we have a moral obligation to assist."David Crawford is the founder of Animal Help Now, a 911-like website and smartphone app that links people to wildlife rehabbers and transporters like WREN. App usage has increased every year since its inception in 2012, he said."As we expand and build new roads and build new suburbs, you have a lot more interaction with animals," he said. Then, he added, there is climate change: more destructive hurricanes will yield more injuries and habitat destruction; prolonged droughts, raging forest fires and searing heat waves will continue to push desperate animals further into human habitats."People are going to be interacting with wildlife a lot more than they are right now," said Crawford. He estimates that by the end of 2019, Animal Help Now will have been used in 40,000 wildlife emergencies across the country.A week after the first attempt, Rooker was back at Laurel Park. This time, there was a scrum of additional helpers, including Crandall, along with two kayaks. There were, however, no geese.Just before the group split off to search nearby ponds for the flock, Darcell Patterson, a sneaker-shod woman, intercepted the volunteers. Patterson, 66, has walked around the park every day for the last four years, she said, and brings dried food pellets with her to "establish rapport" with the resident ducks and geese. She matter-of-factly informed the group that the injured goose is named Gary, and that his leg has been wrapped in that line for a couple of years. Gary, it seems, can survive on his own, and has not yet been ostracized from his avian comrades.Crandall decided to let Gary be for now, knowing he was under Patterson's watchful eye. As long as the bird can still fly, walk and eat, Crandall explained, the stress of relocation isn't justifiable yet."Gary's got friends in high places," Patterson said. While it wasn't the Disney-worthy victory that the volunteers may have had in mind this go-round, it was still a victory by their standards."Sometimes letting wild be wild is the right thing to do," Jones said. "You teach people what situations need our intervention, and what situations don't."This article originally appeared in The New York Times.(C) 2019 The New York Times Company

An Old School Night with the Tower of Zenopus

 Cache
We had a fun time a Casa Scrum tonight. Fellow Scrummer Zach Howard is kind of a fanatic about the old Holmes Dungeons and Dragons Basic starter set published in 1977. He likes to run the starter dungeon from that set, the Tower of Zenopus. So we gave it a shot as he wants to run it at the upcoming ScrumCon 2020. I love D&D and am starting to play it again after a 20 year hiatus. We played with the preset characters from the original scenario plus some additional characters introduced in Eric Holmes’ shorter fiction published in the Dragon magazine over the years. Bottom line, up front: we had a blast. This was the D&D I played as a young pup. A true blast from the past. Rich McKee kept up a stream of consciousness journal as we were playing which he shared with us afterwards and gave us permission to us. Words are Rich’s (below), thus somewhat Rich-centric. Some small edits for this post. The McKee Narrative Cast of Pregenerated Characters: Zereth (Rich McKee): ElfBoinger (Walt O’

SAFe PI Planning, my 5 key takeaways

 Cache

La Mobilière has been using the SAFe framework to organise its IT delivery for the last 2 years. I had the chance to attend the "PI Planning" in Nyon last week, were 7 teams gathered to plan the next 3 months of work. Here are 5 positive takeaways from this intense day, and about SAFe in general.

It’s all about teams

It might not be easily graspable from the huge SAFe diagram but in the end the whole process aims at giving development teams the best material to do their work. Mobiliar IT is organised around 40 Scrum teams, all working with the same cadence: 5x 2 weeks Sprints and 1x innovation Sprint per quarter, together forming a Product Increment (or PI).
The day began with some motivational and inspirational speeches around teamwork, including the famous Al Pacino speech in the movie “Any given Sunday”. This focus on teams might ring a bell to the readers of my previous blogpost about The Loop Approach.
Self-organised teams are the best vehicles to generate value.

safe diagram
The SAFe diagram. Scary?

Roles around a business process rather than hierarchy

People may be scared by the apparent complexity of SAFe (this fear resonates with me as well) but one thing that I really like is that it is organised with specific roles around value delivery, rather than a hierarchical pyramid of authority. Of course the standard hierarchy still exists at Mobiliar, but SAFe makes sure that for most people, their day is organised by the value they provide rather than who they report to. If you are using Scrum you certainly know what I mean, as there is no hierarchical level between the Product Owner and a Developer, just different responsibilities. At Liip we use Holacracy and the role structure has helped greatly to clarify who is accountable for what, and make sure decision can be taken where appropriate without the need for escalation.

Iterations at all levels

In my opinion, one of the biggest advantages of using Agile methodologies is the learning mindset they foster. Every practice is challenged and this continuous challenging generates continuous improvements. I have spent only one day at Mobiliar and I witnessed this mindset at various levels, from a very broad scale to a very detailed one. SAFe’s PI introduces a 3-month cycle which allows for reflection and improvement at a global scale. As an example of a global scale, a question like “how could we improve our estimate of the delivered work for next PI?” could emerge. While, at a detailed scale, the practice of team coordination during the day was challenged and improved on the spot last Monday. Continuous improvement for the win!

Collaboration first

I was very pleasantly surprised by the degree of collaboration that happened during the day. When you work with multiple parallel teams quite some coordination is needed. Scrum Masters and Product Owners were buzzing from one team to the other to make sure risks and dependencies were identified and communicated. The team that had too much on its plate found a generous partner to take over some extra work.

dependencies max-
Dependencies identified and documented

This collaboration was not restricted to teams. The last event of the day was the “Management review” where the biggest risks identified for this PI are discussed and mitigated. I just loved how this part was handled: in a very pragmatic, transparent way. Both the “management” (read hierarchical stakeholders outside of the SAFe process), Product Managers and representatives of the teams were discussing one problem at a time, focusing on finding actionable solutions to relieve the teams. Kudos!

Business value driven

At Liip we fight strongly to focus on maximising value, using techniques like Lean Startup Canvas or Minimum Viable Product (MVP). SAFe is similar to Scrum in this regard, the transparency regarding capacity forces a strong product portfolio management prioritisation.
This portfolio management of course happened before the PI Planning, and probably generated quite some discussions :). During PI Planning the products impacted were presented, based on priority and their position in the roadmap to give everyone a good understanding of the business needs. A more detailed case about an important product was presented focusing on the goals of the product, whom it targeted and what was its USP. I can’t stress this enough: focusing on the why makes all the difference, regarding both motivation and understanding.

SAFe enough to try?

Of course, SAFe also has some blind spots (it’s no surprise if Mobiliar also maintains some “speed boat” teams on the side), and probably mostly make sense for huge IT organisations. But I was delighted to see that the Agile values can survive and flourish in such a structured, large-scale environment.

Interested in discussing how you could evolve your organisation towards more agility? Don’t hesitate to contact us.

Job Title: DevOps Engineer

Posting End Date: 02/12/2019

Location: Gaydon

£45,800 - £60,000

What to expect:

Our team is in place to improve the user experience across a range of features within the company product offerings. You’ll deliver technical products through a team, utilising strong people management skills.
