Wekenlang liet men haar hierop liggen zonder voedsel.

Introduction To ‘Man-gagement Rings’

 Cache

Typically, women have a stronger interest in jewellery and design than men. The jewellery industry has also played a part – offering different accessories ranging from rings and bracelets, to statement necklaces and dangly earrings. Plus, these pieces are not just reserved for special occasions but for everyday use. Jewellery for men, on the other hand, has mainly stuck to chunky silver or golden chains, watches, subtle ear studs and plain rings. it's safe to say the world of jewellery definitely caters more to women than men. Browsing through shops specialising in engagement rings and wedding bands, you will soon come to recognize that the emphasis here, clearly is on the brides-to-be! However, with positive changing attitudes towards the engagement process, the rise of more stylish offerings for men has been on the rise. Find out more in this blog post.

The Pacific Community launches new information tools on sustainable fishing practices camillem Thu, 11/28/2019 - 21:23

The Pacific Community (SPC) in partnership with the European Union (EU) is launching today a series of animated videos targeting the fishers, the schools and the general public with the objective of raising awareness on sustainable fishing practices.

The series, called “Fisher’s Tales” aims at disseminating informative and educational toolkits amongst coastal communities from the Pacific region and includes short animated videos compatible with mass media and social networks. The videos will provide information on the habitat, nutrition and behaviour of key marine species, including sea cucumber, as well as advice on how to use these resources in a sustainable way.

The series will be adapted into local languages and disseminated across the 15 beneficiary countries* that are part of the EU-Funded Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership (PEUMP) Programme. Funded by the EU and the Government of Sweden, the EUR 45 million PEUMP programme promotes sustainable management and sound ocean governance for food security and economic growth, while addressing climate change resilience and conservation of marine biodiversity. It follows a comprehensive approach, integrating issues related to oceanic fisheries, coastal fisheries, community development, marine conservation and capacity building under one single regional action.

The Pacific Community has long been supporting its member countries in deploying Community-based Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management. This approach aims at equipping communities with technical information and advice on the fish species and habitats upon which they rely for food security and livelihoods. The overall objective is to see local communities taking a leading role in sustainable management of fisheries resources.

The Head of Cooperation at the Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific, Christoph Wagner said, “In line with the regional strategy, the New Song for Coastal Fisheries – Pathway to Change, the EU has enhanced its focus and financial commitment to support coastal fisheries management. Raising awareness on sustainable fishing practices is a crucial step to promote productive and healthy ecosystems and fish stocks that ultimately contribute to improving wellbeing of coastal communities''.

“The Pacific Community and its partners are putting emphasis on developing information tools specifically targeting communities, in line with guidelines and policies endorsed by the Pacific-African Caribbean Pacific (Pacific-ACP) countries.” said Neville Smith, Director of the Fisheries Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems Division of the Pacific Community.

*Pacific-ACP states that are part of the Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership (PEUMP) Programme are the Cook Islands, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and Vanuatu.

About the Pacific Community Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems Division:
The Regional Fisheries response have been part of SPC mandate for almost seventy years. The SPC Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems Division leads fisheries science and technical expertise in the Pacific region and supports the 22 Pacific Island countries and territories in oceanic fisheries, coastal fisheries and aquaculture. We are working in an area covering 28.2 million km² of ocean, with the support of over 35 international partners.

About the Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership Programme (PEUMP):
The Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership (PEUMP) Programme addresses some of the most serious challenges faced by Pacific countries. Among these are the increasing depletion of coastal fisheries resources; the threats to marine biodiversity, including negative impacts of climate change and disasters; the uneven contribution of oceanic fisheries to national economic development; the need for improved education and training; and the need to mainstream a rights-based approach and to promote greater recognition of gender issues to ensure inclusiveness and positive changes for Pacific island people.  The five-year PEUMP programme is funded by the European Union (EUR 35 million) and the government of Sweden (EUR 10 million). It is implemented by the Pacific Community (SPC), the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the University of the South Pacific (USP) in close collaboration with Non-Government Organisations and the national authorities.

Tongaat to pursue claims against former execs over ‘undesirable’ accounting practices

 Cache
Embattled agroprocessing business Tongaat Hulett said on Friday that a probe by advisory firm PwC into the company’s past financial activities had revealed that certain senior executives had initiated or participated in “undesirable accounting practices”. In turn, this resulted in revenue being recognised in earlier reporting periods than it should have been, and in expenses being inappropriately capitalised to assets. This then resulted in profits in the respective years being overstated, and in the overstatement of certain of Tongaat’s financial statements.

Ngāti Kuia: Peart, in Old Tasman Bay (p. 125) translates Horoirangi as ‘Washing of the sky.” This is the highest peak at the back of the Glenduan. Its name derives from the description of when the clouds envelope Horo-i-rangi, which is a sign of bad weather.

  • Maniniaro / Angelus Peak
A hill at 2075m at the western end of Angelus Ridge in Travers Range approximately 7.5km southwest of Lake Rotoiti. Ngāti Apa Tribunal evidence states that this is the accompanying lake to Roto Maninitua – both are the footpaths of Ngāti Apa’s dead, as they fly back to touch the shores of Hawaikinui, Hawaiki.

  • Pukeone / Mount Campbell
A hill at 1330 m east of Wharepapa / Arthur Range between Riuwaka River South Branch and Pokororo River approximately 13 km west of Motueka. Te Atiawa notes that Pukeone (meaning sandy hill) is where Te Atiawa carried the sand to the top of the hill to signal to whanau. The brown area today marks where the fires used to be. Pukeone is highly significant to Te Atiawa. Ngāti Rarua history: there is korero regarding the origins of the name Pukeone and one theory advances that it is a tupuna name from early times perhaps belonging to one of Rakaihautu’s party. The translation of Sand Hill however can be related to the practice of carrying sand to the summit of the maunga where signal fires were lit to tell of special occasions. The fires burning on top of Pukeone could be seen as far as away as Whakapuaka. A fire was lit on Pukeone following Wakefield’s acceptance of Nelson as a settlement site.
  • Rākauroa / Torrent Bay
A bay approximately 10 km northeast of Kaiteriteri. The Anchorage is within the bay. Ngāti Tama notes that, as the name implies, the area was wealthy with trees and Ngāti Tama and Te Atiawa established ship building operations there after their arrival in the rohe. This name was also recorded in Peart's Old Tasman Bay and other documents. Ngāti Apa Tribunal evidence translated this as a type of tree. Rakauroa was the name of the bay, with many Ngāti Apa occupation areas.
  • Riuwaka River (was Riwaka River – also note Riuwaka River North & South Branches)
A river flowing generally east from the confluence of Riuwaka River North Branch and Riuwaka River South Branch east of Wharepapa / Arthur Range into Tasman Bay / Te Tai-o-Aorere approximately 5 km north-northeast of Motueka. Te Atiawa states that this is: taonga wairua; Puketapu hapū have tribal accounts of relationships with the river; rivers are tapu; the mouth of the river is named after the tekoteko on top of Te Āwhina, which in turn were named after the tipuna who discovered Antarctica (Hui Te Rangiora); Riwaka is a spelling error and the “u” changes the meaning ; Riuwaka is the place that Hui Te Rangiora landed and was named by him because of its natural features.; Riuwaka is documented in Old Tasman Bay (Peart). Ngāti Rarua history: traditionally named the Riuwaka River – Riu is the name for the bilge of a waka or basin where water would gather. In this instance it is a reference to the puna or pools where the river emerges from within Papatuanuku. There are a series of pools below the Riuwaka resurgence and each pool has specific cultural purpose for the manawhenua iwi.
  • Rotomairewhenua / Blue Lake
A lake west of Franklin Ridge and north of Rotopōhueroa / Lake Constance in Spenser Mountains approximately 25km southwest of Lake Rotoiti. Ngāti Apa Tribunal evidence states that this name means ‘Lake of peaceful lands’. This lake was used for the cleansing of male bones.
  • Rotomaninitua / Lake Angelus
A lake at 1650 m on Robert Ridge in Travers Range adjacent to Bristol Pass and Hinapouri Tarn, approximately 6km west-southwest of Lake Rotoiti. Ngāti Apa Tribunal evidence states that this is the resting place of our spirits. When we depart this life into the next, Roto Maninitua refers to directing our wairua through to be washed, to bathe and to swim inside and underneath the snow, or should it be summertime, inside and underneath the mountain.
  • Rotopōhueroa / Lake Constance
A lake below Franklin Ridge in Spenser Mountains approximately 26km southwest of Lake Rotoiti. Ngāti Apa Tribunal evidence, translates this name as the ‘long calabash’. This lake was used for the final cleansing of the bones of our female tipuna, before they were entrusted to be stored in and around Ngāti Apa’s sacred places in the Sabine Valley.
  • Separation Point / Te Matau
A coastal point between Whariwharangi Bay and Mutton Cove extending into Golden Bay / Mohua approximately 18 km northeast of Takaka. Te Matau is an ancestral name and important to Ngāti Tama and Te Atiawa as it is one of the boundary markers between Onetahua and Motueka. The name was changed by D’Urville, but iwi still refer to this name and old title deeds support the name Te Matau. Te Atiawa Tribunal evidence also recorded this name (see A Riwaka Nga Hekenga p. 117, Tribunal casebook Northern South Island Inquiry). Ngāti Kuia and Ngāti Apa note that Peart in Old Tasman Bay translates the name as meaning the fish hook of Maui. It was the western most point of the tukuwhenua and an occupation area. An older name for this place is Te Matau-a-Maui.  Ngāti Rarua history: This translates as The Hook and represents the Eastern most point of Golden Bay and the Western tip of Tasman Bay. It was an area surrounded by a number of settlements of the local manawhenua iwi.

    Te Kauparenui / Gowan River
A river flowing north from Lake Rotoroa at Rotoroa (locality) into the Buller River approximately 1 km east of Gowanbridge. Ngāti Apa tribunal evidence translates Te Kauparenui as “The Great Division”.Te Kauparanui refers to the great earth rending that closed and formed the lake we have today and that in another lifetime Te Kauparenui shook and shook so hard that it created a huge tidal force that created the river of the Gowan.
  • Te Mamaku / Ruby Bay
Te Atiawa and Ngāti Tama note that, as the name implies, the black tree fern was once plentiful and provided resources to the iwi. This was a pa site, an occupational reserve, a kai basket, and there was a waka landing site at McKee Domain. This was also a trading beach.
  • Te Waikoropupū River
A stream flowing from the northern end of Walker Ridge generally northeast into Takaka River approximately 1 km northwest of Takaka. Spelling alteration from Waikoropupu River (“Te” and macron added to a recorded name). The English meaning for Te Waikoropupū is the bubbling spring waters. Te Atiawa and Ngāti Tama state that the river is in the sacred valley for Te Atiawa, outlined in evidence in Te Atiawa Tribunal hearing at Motueka. Ngāti Rarua translates this name as “Bubbling Waters” and notes that this is the home of the kaitiaki Huriawa who was responsible for keeping the waterways of Mohua clear and pristine. The waters have been utilised for many sacred occasions, such as blessings, cleansing and revitalisation of the unwell. Manawhenua iwi always offer karakia before entering this sacred place.
  • Tokangawhā / Split Apple Rock

Ngāti Kōata states that Te Aumiti is of significance to Ngāti Koata, who have many cultural historical stories and korero associated with Te Aumiti. Ngāti Kuia translates Te Aumiti as “The current that is swallowed.” This was the place where the Shag guardian of Kupe drowned. The story of the naming sets up part of the oral map for navigating the waters and the customs behind it. The full name is “Te Aumiro o te Kawau a Toru”.
  • Whareātea Bay (Durville Island).
Misspelled name of bay/area on the north east side of Rangitoto ki te Tonga / D’Urville Island. Was also locally known as Whareata Bay.
  • Tory Channel / Kura Te Au
A strait separating Arapaoa Island from Te Waipounamu, extending generally east-west from Dieffenbach Point in Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui to West Head and East Head in Cook Strait. Te Atiawa and Ngāti Tama note that this: was an important mahinga kai and settlement site for Te Atiawa; was the Te Atiawa main highway; Te Atiawa continually monitor and defend this waterway today in Environment courts; Kura Te Au separates Arapaoa Island from the mainland in the Marlborough Sounds. Kura Te Au is named because of the red colour of the sea imparted by a variety of plankton and the  multitude of the crustacean krill; Kura Te Au is place where Kupe killed the giant wheke and the blood ran through the channel. Kurahaupo and Rangitāne note that this means “the red current”. When Kupe killed Te Wheke o Muturangi, the octopus bled into the current there, turning it red. The name also denotes the red Krill found all around the outer Sounds which is eaten by octopus and whales (hence the whaling presence) and is part of the Kupe oral map.
  • Whakakitenga Bay

Te Atiawa and Ngāti Tama note that this cove is of significance as it is: of historical importance to previous iwi and Te Atiawa; Wahi Tapu; a burial site; tauranga waka. This is the original name, with reference to the bloody mere Rangitāne: Meretoto is the place where the first interaction between Cook's crew and Rangitāne Tupuna, such as Te Rangihouhia and Kahura first took place. Was also locally known as Ship Cove and was named Ship Cove (Meretoto) on NZ topographic maps.

Te Atiawa and Ngāti Tama note that this island is the location of traditions of Kupe but highly significant to Te Atiawa. Kupe finally dispatched whekenui with a massive Arapaoa (downwards blow) to its head. It is the spiritual home of Te Atiawa, with many Kaimoana sites, many papakaianga, fortified Pa sites, whaling sites, cultivation sites, waka landing, building waka, repairs. Arapawa is a spelling error. Ngāti Kuia Tribunal evidence notes that Ara means ‘to rise’ and ‘paoa’ is to strike with a weapon. The Island was named after Kupe’s rising stroke which killed the octopus Te Wheke o Muturangi. It features in waiata and stories of the iwi.

  • Matapara / Pickersgill Island
An island in Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui adjacent to Arapaoa Island and Blumine Island (Oruawairua). Te Atiawa’s close association with Matapara / Pickersgill Island is through ancestry, conquest and customary occupation. This motu, like many others in Totaranui, was a strategic point for warfare, occupation and contains wāhi tapu for the iwi. The foreshore surrounding Matapara / Pickersgill Island was utilised for both offshore fishing and for preparation. Matapara / Pickersgill Island was a roosting and nesting place for the little blue penguin and the shag. It was also known for its kohekohe and tawa forest. During the turn of the century the island was used for harvesting of wheat crops, speargrass and cocksfoot. Ko Matua Hautere te Tangata, Ko Kaikai-a-waro te taniwha, Ko Te Hoiere te Waka, Ko Ngāti Kuia te Iwi Ngāti Kuia notes that Inskull in Place Names of Marlborough (p. 55) translates this name as a type of tree, and it was the name of the waka, captained by Matua Hautere, which brought Ngāti Kuia to the area. It was guided here by their two kaitiaki, Kaikaiawaro and Ruamano. It forms a substantial part of Ngāti Kuia identity, history and place of occupation. Ngāti Toa history: Te Hoire is the traditional name given to Pelorus Sound by Ngāti Toa; the sound was renamed by Lieutenant P. Chetwode after the ship he commanded: the HMS Pelorus. Pelorus Sound was an area of concentrated Ngāti Toa occupation and control; the iwi were considered to be the ‘direct owners’ of the Sound, as well as the connected valley and river, in the 1830s and 1840s. Ngāti Toa first came into possession of the region following their conquest during 1829 and 1830. According to historian W.J. Elvy, at the time of Te Rauparaha’s raids, Ngāti Kuia held the Pelorus Sounds and the valley. The invaders, however, “cleaned up the districts pretty thoroughly, reducing the survivors to slaves, or forcing them to hide in the mountainous fastness of the hinterland.” Hopai Pa located in Crail Bay, is one famous battle site at which Ngāti Toa were victorious . Two Ngāti Toa pa, the Canon point pa, and Te Akaroa pa, are located at Port Ligar. Another site of significance was the stream mouth at Clova Bay, which was given the name Totaranui. This was a landing site for waka that crossed from Omere on the Wellington South Coast, and was used extensively during the invasion and conquest of Te Tau Ihu.
  • Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui
Te Atiawa and Ngāti Tama state that: Totaranui waterways are the veins of Te Atiawa, each and every bay is highly significant to Te Atiawa; Totaranui is the original Te Reo name; Totaranui was bountiful inTotara. Following a series of taua 1827–1830, Ngāti Toa established themselves at a number of locations in the Marlborough Sounds, including Queen Charlotte Sound. There were a number of Ngāti Toa pa sites in Totaranui, including Te Rei o Karaka pa at Karaka Point, and Ngakuta Point Pa. Ana-o-koha, located in the Dieffenbach point area, is the site of an historic battle, at which Ngāti Toa successfully repelled and defeated an attempted ambush . Another site of significance is Ship Cove, an important tapu area where the daughter of Te Pehi Kupe is buried. Colonel Wakefield, while collecting signatures for the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, encountered a large Ngāti Toa group.

This awa along with the Wairau was an important food resource and integral part of day to day life for Ngāti Rarua. Rangitāne notes that Inskull in Place Names of Marlborough (p. 54) translates ‘Paoa’ as smoke – ‘smoky river’. There are several different explanations for the name. Cloudy Bay was also an important centre of the thriving whale industry. The population did decrease in the late 1840s, however Ngāti Toa did maintain their occupation of Cloudy Bay. Ngāti Rarua history: This name originates from the time of Kupe and his infamous pursuit of the octopus Te Wheke o Muturangi. Politicians have come a long way on climate since 2016. Are voters ready?

 Cache
Story 353181695

This story was originally published by Slate and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration.

As much as I try to forget it, one of the enduring moments of the 2016 election was Hillary Clinton, in her speech accepting the Democratic nomination for president, deploying “I believe in science” as a laugh line. It was supposed to be humorous because the thought of a president who had said climate change was a Chinese hoax still felt ludicrous. Three years and so many terrible environmental decisions later, it feels a lot less funny. This election cycle, though, Democratic candidates have advanced from where Clinton was in 2016. They’re finally speaking cogently, compellingly, and gravely about the threat we face and the urgency with which we ought to act.

One of the more surprising themes of the past few years has been the mainstreaming of worry over climate change, thanks to the work of scientists, activists, journalists, and, due to our new normal of floods and fires, lived experience. It’s increasingly considered an urgent issue among the Democratic base: Data for Progress ranks climate change as the second most important priority, topped only by beating President Donald Trump, while Pew Research puts it third in terms of issues for Dems. Former candidate Jay Inslee centered his entire short-lived primary campaign on the idea that addressing climate change was the most important action any president could hope to take in 2020. Voters’ interest and candidates’ prioritization seem to have worked together to make climate a focus in many of the Democratic debates so far. According to Vox, climate change ranks fourth in terms of time spent on topics (after health care, immigration, and racial equality), with about 45 minutes devoted to it total before the November debate.

All of this adds up to a remarkable departure from years past, when climate has been so overlooked that environmental journalists essentially made a minibeat out of tracking how little time presidential debates spent on the topic. (In the previous five cycles, 37 minutes and 6 seconds of prime time, general-election debate time was spent on climate change, out of some 1,500 aired minutes.) It’s hard for the counters to break the habit. Even following Wednesday night’s debates, in which climate came up naturally multiple times (better, I think, given the inherently interdisciplinary nature of the topic), there were still confused takes lamenting the lack of time devoted to the subject.

There’s something frustrating about how the candidates are talking about climate change, but you can’t measure it in debate minutes. It’s certainly a relief that we’ve moved on from the years when debating climate change was the time for certain candidates to demonstrate their scientific bona fides and explain the greenhouse gas effect. We’ve finally turned the corner: During Wednesday’s debate, climate change was a business, health, and infrastructure problem, highlighting how much it now weaves through so many aspects of American politics, from housing to natural disasters to the refugee crisis. It is no longer an abstraction but something connected to human needs. Our understanding of this makes obvious why addressing it is a political priority.

But the rapid nature of the turn has left us a bit lost, too. Years of debating health care have left even casual observers with strong feelings on “Medicare for All” and individual mandates. Climate is trickier: Candidates are attempting to detail their plans to curb emissions, but our current lack of existing legislation on this means only those extremely steeped in climate policy are positioned to effectively judge their strategies. (Grist has a very thorough look at every 2020 candidate’s climate policy. It is, by no fault of theirs, an incredible amount of information to parse.) We can slice through the debate chatter in which everyone promises climate action matters to them to understand how the plans compare on a relative spectrum (Senator Bernie Sanders’ and Senator Elizabeth Warren’s are, unsurprisingly, the most ambitious), but two scary questions still hang over everything: Will any of these plans become law? And: Will it be enough?

I think this second question is what the debate-timers really want to know. Before he dropped out in August, Inslee had pushed for an entire debate focused solely on climate, a reasonable enough strategy to up expectations and set standards. The Democratic National Committee refused to grant this request, but others were happy to. Since the DNC rules bar the candidates from participating in traditional debate-style forums they don’t approve, we ended up with events like September’s “Climate Crisis Town Hall,” where 10 candidates took turns individually fielding questions from a moderator on CNN. The whole thing took seven hours. The candidates were able to get very specific about climate policies thanks to the format, but the ratings were terrible.

In early November, another attempt was made at a climate-focused forum. The Weather Channel, along with the journalistic collaboration Climate Desk, released an hourlong climate-focused special featuring several presidential candidates called “Race to Save the Planet.” (Slate contributes to Climate Desk but did not participate in this project.) Perhaps learning from CNN, the hosts did not even attempt to allow all the candidates their own time to describe their plans. Instead, the special makes somewhat ruthless use of the interviews toward presenting the case that climate change is happening and costing Americans dearly, and therefore requires action. It was not dissimilar from what’s been happening on the Democratic primary debate stage — this mainstreaming of climate action as a political necessity — and it’s also of a piece with a larger ongoing project of the Weather Channel’s. For years now, it has been quietly and methodically including climate change in its coverage of the weather, while also investing in big-picture projects that attempt to explain the breadth of the problem to its often very-center-of-the-road audience. (Its “United States of Climate Change” feature, for example, takes pains to have one story for every state.)

One interesting thing about the special, relevant to the question of how climate legislation could ever pass: It featured eight presidential candidates, three of them Republicans. On the Democratic side, there was Sanders, Warren, Senator Cory Booker, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Senator Kamala Harris. (Beto O’Rourke participated before he dropped out of the race, so his portion was cut. Former Vice President Joe Biden, like Trump, was invited but declined to participate.) And then it had Republican primary challengers Bill Weld, Joe Walsh, and Mark Sanford. (Sanford dropped out of the race in mid-November, after the special had already aired.)

Why would Republican candidates, even long-shot Republican candidates, show up for such a thing? I think it’s because they realize they ought to. Their voters are starting to care. Since 2016, most Americans, almost always more than 65 percent, have told Gallup that they know climate change is happening and that most scientists agree on this fact. By some counts the percentage is even higher — a survey from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication suggests 73 percent of registered voters think it’s happening, and 63 percent are worried about it. The situation is still split along partisan lines, as you might expect. Gallup divides respondents into three groups: “concerned believers,” “mixed middle,” and “cool skeptics”; 77 percent of Democrats are “concerned believers” while 52 percent of Republicans are “cool skeptics.” But as the Yale study points out, “Worry about global warming has increased among liberal/moderate Republicans by 15 percentage points since May 2017 and by seven points among conservative Republicans since October 2017.” Part of this shift may be thanks to younger voters. One survey found that 77 percent of Republicans younger than 38 think climate change is a serious threat — compared with 76 percent of Democrats in the same category.

That’s not to say this is anywhere close to simple. Even as acceptance of global warming has grown among Republican voters, Republican lawmakers, seemingly enabled by Trump’s outlandish positions, have only grown more opposed to taking action on climate change. According to the League of Conservation Voters, elected Republican officials now vote against environmental legislation 95 percent of the time (this divergence has only sprung up in the past couple of decades). As the Guardian further points out, there might be a simple explanation for this: “Data collected by the transparency group OpenSecrets shows donations from oil and gas interests were split relatively evenly between the parties until the 2000s,” Guardian reporter Oliver Milman writes. “By the 2018 election cycle, 87 percent of industry contributions went to Republicans, with the proportion in the 2020 cycle, which is yet to be completed, reaching a record 89 percent.”

This underscores the real divide between the parties. It’s not so much that one believes in science and the other doesn’t. Not accepting the science on climate change has become so untenable that even Charles Koch has ostensibly reversed course. (Even Trump isn’t really a denialist. Instead, as the Atlantic’s Robinson Meyer smartly explained in a recent piece, it’s more useful to understand Trump as a carbonist, a person who thinks, for no good reason, that burning fossil fuels is basically macho and therefore good.) But it’s becoming ever clearer that the divide is basically that one party is willing to act to help the people who will suffer through the crisis and the other is aligned with companies hoping to keep on making money off it. The question is whether the latter will remain an option for the Republican Party.

To answer that question, it’s instructive to look back to what sparked the environmental movement of the 1960s and ’70s, prompting the bipartisan creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. The story starts with Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, serialized in the New Yorker in 1962, which explained how pollution, and particularly the insecticide DDT, was leeching into the natural world, weakening birds’ egg shells to the point that they couldn’t reproduce. America’s national bird, the bald eagle, was existentially threatened. And then — the story goes — the Cuyahoga River caught on fire, the photos went the 1969 version of viral (they were published in Time magazine and National Geographic), and the environmental movement was born. There were Earth Day protests in every city. Even Richard Nixon had to get on board.

The story is only partially right. By 1969, the Cuyahoga River, and other rivers around America, had been catching fire because of pollution for years. In fact, the infamous Time magazine photo was actually taken during another fire — in 1952. What happened in 1969 was that people were ready to act on what they were seeing, instead of dismissing or ignoring it. They had been primed by the years of activists ringing alarm bells. It wasn’t so much that the image of the fire woke people up — it was that the image of the fire finally tipped people over into action.

It feels like we could be on the cusp of an analogous situation now. Yes, it’s all made harder by the years of disinformation from fossil fuel companies that has been reinforced by the right, and yes, America is also facing a perplexing set of existential problems with regard to representative democracy in Washington. But we’ve also had years of alarm bell ringing and patient explanation. And we’ve had years of climate-linked catastrophe, years of stories about the climate-exacerbated natural disasters that are destroying people’s homes and lives with increasing frequency and furor. Democrats sound different when they talk about climate change now. They realize how many of us are finally ready to hear it.

Rugby league has become competitive – but only in the southern hemisphere

 Cache

While the rise of Samoa, Fiji and Papua New Guinea is brilliant, the wealthiest investors are in Europe and North America

By Gavin Willacy for No Helmets Required

“You all need to have a good look at what’s happened with the international game over the last five or six years,” said Wayne Bennett after the Lions lost to Papua New Guinea. “You’ve seen the emergence of Tonga. You’ve seen how much Papua New Guinea and Samoa have improved. So, while we’ve got to swallow a bitter pill as Great Britain, on the other side of the ledger I see the game getting stronger.”

Having more competitive teams at the top is undoubtedly fantastic for the world game. For the first time since the late 1970s, the best four sides in the world can – and do – beat each other. “We are seeking to have at least eight fully fledged contenders for every World Cup,” said IRL chairman Nigel Wood this week on the International Rugby League Podcast podcast. With the rise of Samoa, Fiji and Papua New Guinea, that is feasible.

Wayne Bennett could earn new England contract despite disastrous Lions tour

 Cache

• Coach out of contract following disappointing Lions tour
• ‘We shouldn’t forget what Wayne has done up until this point’

The RFL chief executive, Ralph Rimmer, has said Wayne Bennett could be given a new contract to lead England into the 2021 World Cup despite Great Britain’s recent disastrous tour of the southern hemisphere. The 69-year-old Australian is out of contract after the Lions lost all four games against Tonga, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

When asked if Bennett could be retained as coach, Rimmer said: “Certainly he has a chance. We shouldn’t forget what Wayne has done up until this point. We’re all hurting, but until this point we have progressed really well. We’ll take until the end of the year and there will be some recommendations from the review, which will go to the RFL board in the new year.”

Di RDP, Komisi II DPRD Pekanbaru Cecar Dishub Terkait Kebocoran PAD Dari Parkir

 Cache

Riauaktual.com - Komisi II DPRD Pekanbaru mencecar Dinas Perhubungan (Dishub) Kota Pekanbaru, terkait Ketidakjelasan regulasi hingga menyebabkan kebocoran Pendapatan Asli Daerah (PAD) dari sektor parkir

"Secepatnya kita lakukan perubahan.

(Suf)

PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) V Kebun Sei Rokan (SRO) menyerahkan puluhan juta zakat profesi ke Badan Amil Zakat Nasional (BAZNAS) Rohul.

Claire Szabo elected new Labour Party president

 Cache
Auckland woman Claire Szabo has been elected the new president of the Labour Party after beating two other candidates in a contest at the party's conference in Whanganui.
She is the chief executive of Habitat for Humanity, a charity which builds houses for people on low incomes.
She beat Tane Phillip, the party's senior Māori vice-president, and Lorna Crane of the Westport branch.
The vacancy was created after the resignation of Nigel Haworth in September.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made it clear publicly she was dissatisfied with his handling of sexual assault allegation against a Labour staffer and volunteer, which is the subject of two investigations, one into the complaint and another into the handling of it.
Szabo's pitch in the conference programme says she would "deal capably with the upcoming investigation reports".

The vacancy was created after the resignation of Nigel Haworth in September.
She would also "ensure organisational performance with adequate finances, focused teams, a clear plan and accountability to each other".
Szabo was Labour's candidate on the North Shore in 2014 and was No 38 on the list that year.
She and her husband live in Maungakiekie and have two children, a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old.
She grew up in Papakura and describes herself a Hungarian-Kiwi.
"As the daughter of a refugee and a nurse, the wife of a teacher, and the working mum of two small children, I understand that everyday life can have its challenges," she said in her written statement to conference delegates.
"Mum worked night shifts and dad worked for the council. We lived in a council-owned house which we eventually bought.
"This not only helped my family but taught me about the difference housing and home ownership can make."
She has a music degree from Auckland, an education degree from Trinity in Dublin, a degree in commerce and administration from Victoria, and a masters in public administration from Harvard.
At Habitat for Humanity, she oversaw the operations of 11 charities that delivered housing to low-income people in New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Nepal.

Kematian Akibat Campak di Samoa Meningkat

 Cache
Menurut WHO, cakupan vaksin hanya sekitar 31%. Esteban Fernández: DE “JILICH” A HIALEAH

 Cache

Event Update For 2019-11-28

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

 Cache
