Surname Saturday -- LNU (Anne, wife of Henry Collins, England to colonial Massachusetts)

 Cache
It's Surname Saturday, and I'm "counting down" my Ancestral Name List each week.

I am working in the 9th great-grandmothers by Ahnentafel number, and I am up to Ancestor #2509 who is Anne LNU (1605-1691). [Note: the more recent ancestral families have been covered in earlier posts.]

My ancestral line back through one generation in this LNU family line is:

1. Randall J. Seaver

2. Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983)
3. Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002)

4. Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942)
5. Alma Bessie Richmond (1882-1962)

8. Frank Walton Seaver (1852-1922)
9. Hattie Louise Hildreth (1857-1920)

18.  Edward Hildreth (1831-1899)
19.  Sophia Newton (1834-1923)

38.  Thomas J. Newton (1800-????)
39.  Sophia Buck (1797-1882)

78.  Isaac Buck (1757-1846)

79.  Martha Phillips (1757-1830)

156.  Isaac Buck (1732-????)
157.  Mary Richards (1733-????).

312.  Isaac Buck (1706-1780)
313.  Ruth Graves (1711-????)

626. Thomas Graves (1686-1756)
627.  Ruth Collins (1685-1715)

1254.  Joseph Collins (1643-1724)

1255.  Mariah Smith (1664-1724)

2508.  Henry Collins, born 1606 in Stepney, Middlesex, England; died 20 February 1687 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.  He married about 1627 in probably Stepney, Middlesex, England.
2509.  Anne LNU, born about 1605 in probably Stepney, Middlesex, England; died 29 September 1691 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.

Children of Henry Collins and Ann are:
*  Henry Collins (1629-1722), married Mary Tolman (1630-1723).
*  John Collins (1632-1679), married Abigail Johnson (1634-1680).
*  Hannah Collins (1632-1719), married 1657 Nathaniel Ingersoll (1632-1718).
*  Margery Collins (1633-1702), married 1656 Isaac Willias (1629-1696).
*  Mary Collins (1641-1682), married 1664 Samuel Johnson (1640-1723).
Joseph Collins (1643-1724), married (1) 1669 Sarah Silsbee (1646-1682); (2) 1684 Mariah Smith (1664-1724).
*  Riall Collins (1645-1681).
*  Elizabeth Collins (1647-1690), married 1666 John Tolman (1636-1725).
*  Benjamin Collins (1648-1711), married (1) 1673 Priscilla Kirtland (1648-1676); (2) 1677 Elizabeth Leach (1651-1729).

In some online family trees, Anne LNU is named as Ann Riall, daughter of Edmund Ryall and Ann Tealby of Herefordshire or Hertfordshire, with three children born in Norfolk.  That may be, but I have seen no record that names the Anne who married Henry Collins and was recorded as the mother of three of her children in Stepney, Middlesex as Anne Riall.

Information about the Collins family was obtained from:

*  Caroline Martino and Marcia Lindberg, "Henry Collins of Lynn and his Descendants," The Essex Genealogist, Volume 10, numbers 3 and 4 (1990), Volume 11, numbers 1-3 (1991), Volume 12, number 4 (1992), 53 pages.

*  Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration, Immigrants to America, 1634-1635, Volume II, C-F (Boston, Mass. : NEHGS, 2001), pages 164-169, Henry Collins sketch.

I have done no original research on this LNU, Riall, or Collins line.

 Cache
Visited by Archie14 on the 26 Nov 2019. Finally got to visit this renowned award winning real ale Mecca. Upon entering I instantly could tell why this “legendary” pub was considered to be one of the finest Ale houses in the UK. Today the pub boasted 27 real ales, 21 ciders and a dozen or so keg beers. The pub is run with such passion and expertise, spotlessly clean, full of brewriania and is a proper traditional British pub of the highest order. Unfortunately I was on a strict time limit but I could quite happily spend a long weekend in Norwich just to come in here.

The City of Norfolk continues to chase the idea of having a casino on the riverfront. But, since approving a land sale to the Pamunkey Indian Tribe, a group of citizens hasn't given up their fight to petition and overturn that decision. "People felt like this was just happening to them. They were not a part of the process," said Jackie Glass, one of the petitioners with the group "Citizens for an Informed Norfolk". Together, the group has gathered more than 3,000 signatures to block the deal. Based on a city charter, they only needed 1,200. "There are people who really want to see this happen. There are people who really don't want to see this happen. But the one thing that they have in common is that they want more information so the abundance of signatures is indicative of people wanting to know more," said Glass.

stories of national interest

Beaufort County (South Carolina) government, which had insisted The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette pay $655 for a public records request, agreed Friday to provide the records to the newspapers for free — halting a dispute between the newspaper and the county over the high cost of public information. County Administrator Ashley Jacobs, who released the documents, said she will waive fees for all public information requests from the media as long as the requests are not “burdensome to staff.” On Nov. 9, the newspaper wrote about the county’s ambiguous prices and exorbitant fees related to Freedom of Information Act requests. The paper cited examples in which the county charged residents hundreds, and in one case thousands, of dollars to access public records. The county was charging the paper hundreds of dollars for information that, according to its website, should have been online and available for free.

A federal judge on Monday ordered two federal agencies to hand over records to a news organization regarding the Trump administration's withholding of military aid to Ukraine, a focal point in the presidential impeachment inquiry. Under the ruling, the Department of Defense and the Office of Management and Budget are bound by a tight deadline for handing over nonexempt documents to the Center for Public Integrity (CPI) after the nonprofit news outlet issued a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the records. Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, a district judge for the District Court for the District of Columbia and Clinton appointee, noted that such rulings are generally rare in a FOIA context, but suggested that the impeachment inquiry against President Trump changed the calculus.

A lawyer representing CNN in a battle for access to sealed records from the Mueller investigation told a federal judge in Washington on Monday that the Justice Department is intentionally delaying production of the documents. “News delayed is news denied,” attorney Charles Tobin with Ballard Spahr told Senior U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton. The first document production by the Justice Department in response to a Freedom of Information Act request was delivered Nov. 2 to the CNN office in D.C., the same day as the parade celebrating the Washington Nationals winning the World Series, the attorney told the judge. Tobin argued the government’s delivery method violated the judge’s order to begin producing documents, including records of FBI interviews from the special counsel’s investigation, known as 302s, by the first of the month on a rolling basis.

Kraljica le še leto in pol na prestolu | Slovenske novice

 Cache

A pink slip from your own mother? Oh, Prince Andrew…

 Cache

My husband had relatives who ran a family business – 3 generations (and multiple branches) worth, at one point – so I understand that working en famille can be fraught with all sorts of fraughty things. And it’s got to be even worse when everything your family does is out in the public. Let alone when everything your family does is paid for by the public. Let alone when you yourself have led a somewhat feckless and dissolute life – feckless and dissolute even by the standards of the British Royal Family.

As is the case of Prince Andrew, Duke of York whose lost a cushy gig cutting ribbons, showing up for exhibitions, and doing whatever else “full-time working members” of the royal family do. As gigs go, Prince Andrew’s was pretty good. He was paid quite a bit – plus travel and expenses - with no heavy lifting in return.

It was a job – the only one he’s held in the nearly 20 years since he left the Royal Navy - that gave him plenty of time to swan around with charmers like Jeffrey Epstein. And maybe even – as is alleged – plenty of time to do something a bit more than swan around with some of the teenage girls that Epstein specialized in exploiting.

The precipitating event that prompted Queen Elizabeth to give the royal pink slip to her second son was an interview Andrew did with .the BBC in which he attempted to explain away his relationship with Epstein.

It was pretty much a fiasco.

There was his failure to show much sympathy for the Epstein’s victims.

He said that he’d stayed at Epstein’s place in New York, even after Epstein had done time as a convicted sex offender, because it was “convenient.” And, I’m sure, the price was right.

Andrew also gave a laughable – even if it is true – explanation of why a woman who claims to have had Epstein-forced sex with Andrew on three occasions is not being truthful. Among other things, Virginia Giuffre has said that Andrew was a sweaty dancer.

Tut, tut, saith the prince. It couldn’t possibly be moi. Not that royals don’t sweat. It’s that Andrew has a condition, stemming from his war action in the Falklands, that prevents him from sweating.

Andrew was allowed to say that it’s his choice to withdraw from royal duties, but the decision was the Queen’s, with a big boost from Andrew’s older brother, who told their mother that Andrew’s behavior was putting a serious hurt on the monarchy. (Oh, not that…)

Off with his head! Or his income, at any rate.

The cut off will be painful.

The prince's access to public money to fund travel and expenses will end.

For example, a three-day visit to Bahrain by the prince on behalf of the UK government in April 2018 cost £16,272, paid for by the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant.

The Sovereign Grant is public money which pays for the cost of official royal in exchange for the surrender by the Queen of the revenue from the Crown Estate. (Source: BBC)

And many of the organizations that Andrew has been associated with are pulling back. No one, it seems, wants Prince Andrew’s name and style on their letterhead.

It’s not just Andrew who’s losing out. Andrew has tried to put his daughters – Beatrice and Eugenie – on something closer to the economic footing that William and Harry (who are much closer in the line of succession) enjoy. If anything, the girls may find their paid appearances pared down. And there may not be much appetite for paying a $2M bill for Beatrice’s upcoming wedding, which they did for Eugenie.

Bet that’s not gong down all that well with Bea.

Although Andrew’s financial wings have been clipped, he does have a little something to fall back on: his allowance.

There is also an annual payment to the prince from the Privy Purse - the Queen's private income - recorded in 2011 as being £249,000.

A princely enough sum for most people, but one which precludes pricey trips to Bahrain.

Asked about whether this funding would continue, Buckingham Palace said only that the Duke of York's office was funded privately by the Queen.

And he’s not being kicked out of his free housing, either.

Freed up from royal duties, Andrew will have more time to devote to legal matters.

Lawyers for Epstein's victims have urged the prince to speak to US police.

Andrew’s getting a lot of advice here about whether to go voluntarily or wait to be called. I did read somewhere that his personal lawyer has warned him to stay out of the United States for the rest of his life.

Even if there’s no criminal actions against him, it’s easy to imagine a victim getting a civil judgement that would entitle them to a few coins from Andrew’s Privy Purse allowance.

In case you’re worried that we won’t be hearing any more from Prince Andrew, “it will not be a complete retirement” for him.

It is understood the prince will continue to support his entrepreneur programme, Pitch@Palace, although it will take place separately from the palace.

So he’ll need a new brand. Pitch@BackseatOfMyBentley?

Prince Andrew's attendance at Royal Family engagements, such as the Trooping of the Colour, Remembrance Sunday or Christmas at the family's estate in Sandringham, Norfolk, is not thought to be affected.

Mostly, however, “his public life is over.”

And the monarchy is shaken.

Yeah, well, shaken but maybe not stirred to do much about real reform.

Andrew’s parents – Elizabeth (93) and Philip (98) – have both lived to great old age, so Andrew, who’s just 59, could have a good few decades in front of him.

But is he employable? Forget about age discrimination. How many jobs are there for someone who was a royal glad-hander? With atrocious judgement.

Poor Andrew may need to get by on his allowance. Or maybe he could sell his story to a tabloid. Wouldn’t that just make the royals crazy…

Lynd Acquisitions Group Buys Iconic Multifamily Tower in Virginia Beach for $43 Million

 Cache
SAN ANTONIO, TX - Lynd Acquisitions Group (LAG), a Texas-based real estate investment vehicle, has acquired an iconic apartment community in Virginia Beach, Virginia for $43 million with plans to spend millions more on value-add improvements. The 16-story, 266-unit Mayflower Apartments at 34th Street and Atlantic Avenue is a highly coveted address as it is the only high-rise rental building within a block of the Atlantic Ocean. This is a crown jewel in Virginia Beach; there is nothing else like it, said A. David Lynd, CEO of LAG and LYND, a privately held apartment management company based in San Antonio. With the Mayflower, we see a tremendous opportunity to execute our current strategy of identifying unique properties that are undervalued and craft tailored plans to unlock the value in both rents and occupancies. Lynd and his co-investors plan on spending $4.6 million-plus on capital improvements to both common areas and individual units. They will invest more than $13,000 per unit to renovate interiors from top to bottom with stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, hardwood floors and upgraded fixtures. LYND Management has been retained to oversee the renovations and manage the building. The property has 3,140 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, a separate parcel with 11,915 square feet of free-standing retail and on-site and off-site parking. Upgrades to the common areas include the addition of Amazon package lockers, surfboard lockers and an enhanced fitness center. Built in 1950, the last renovations to the building were completed in 2010. The Mayflower has studio, one and two-bedroom units, and a penthouse floor with commanding views of the coastline. Since the Mayflower is the only rental property of its kind right near the beach, we believe renters will want a well-located and nicer place to call home, Lynd said. LYND has renovated more than 1,600 apartment units in the last two-and-a-half years with a combined budget of $23 million. This is a very strategic asset for LYND as the company has the experience and expertise to bring this asset up to contemporary standards, said Henry Stimler, managing director of Newmark Knight Frank in New York. Its platform to execute on value-add real estate is second to none in the market today. Stimler arranged a $33 million acquisition loan for LAG from Hunt Real Estate Capital which was represented by Marc Suarez in Hunt s Miami office. Mike Marshall of Newmark represented the seller, Harbor Group International, a Norfolk, Virginia-based real estate investment and management firm with assets valued at $9.7 billion. Since 2017, LYND has acquired 4,665 multifamily units throughout Texas, Florida and Illinois valued at nearly $300 million and performed more than $23 million worth of value-add rehabilitation work. Recent investments include a 444-unit garden-style apartment community in Jacksonville, 1,031 apartments in the Florida Panhandle and a 384-bed student housing community in Beaumont, Texas. About LYND: Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, Lynd is a privately-held, national real estate company that specializes in third-party management of multifamily real estate assets. Managing approximately 23,000 apartment units in 11 states, Lynd ranks as one of the premiere multifamily management companies in the country. For more information, visit www.lynd.com

Stick in the Wheel: Against the Loathsome Beyond review – maximum innovation

 Cache

(From Here)

The modern mixtape emerged as a hip-hop expediency to avoid sample clearance. Stick in the Wheel – former ravers turned innovative folk artists – have cheerily embraced the almost-album form, putting out the collaborative This and the Memory of This mixtape in 2018 soon after the much-lauded Follow Them True (2018), their last full band outing. This year, core Stick duo Nicola Kearey and Ian Carter offered up yet another collected compilation, the many-limbed English Folk Field Recordings Vol 2.

This latest series of “explorations” with medieval roots, Against the Loathsome Beyond, maxes out their innovative impulse. Here, then, are more chilly ancient tunes, re-imagined as drone-rock (Down In Yon Forest) or baroque early synth pastorales (Drive the Cold Winter Away), or as electronic sound art (a remix of Cambridge avant-guitarist C Joynes’s Sang Kancil). Most fist-pumping of all is the instrumental centrepiece Moskeener (British Yiddish for pawnbroker, apparently), a raga that could have gone on far longer. Kearey speaks two tracks, given extra witchy poke by more resonant thrumming. Given that no single version is ever definitive in folk, “anything goes” remains a valid modus operandi.

Eveline is on the 1939 Register living in Docking, Norfolk with Sarah J born 1863 , surname spelled AXTON. Sarah is Eveliine's grandmother. Eveiine has 2 other surnames written above AXTON...Moriaty and Kelly which means 2 marriages. She married Thomas A MORIATY registered Fakenham in March qtr 1940 then married George E KELLY registered Fakenham March qtr 1941...BUT, her name is recorded as AXTEN when it should be MORIATY....so was that first marriage annulled and she reverted to AXTEN?

Victor was born 6 November 1891 son of William AXTEN and Sarah J SCASE who married in 1885. He joined the Royal Navy in 1909, signed on for 12 years and gave his occupation as Sculptor's Model !

All these records are easy to find on Ancestry.

Michele Guasco

Michele Guasco

Superbugs Kill Someone Every 15 Minutes

 Cache

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 published their first Antibiotic Resistance Threats Report in 2013. The intention was to sound the alarm to the dangers of antibiotic resistance that experts had been warning about for decades.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are also called superbugs. The resistance occurs as bacteria adapt to chemicals and drugs in the environment. This may make standards of treatment for bacterial infections less effective, and in the case of superbugs, ineffective.

The term “superbug” was initially coined by the media, but Dr. Stephen Calderwood, who serves as president for the Infectious Diseases Society of America says,2 “It resonates because it's scary. But In fairness, there is no real definition.”

The medical term is multidrug-resistant bacteria, referring to bacteria unaffected by two or more types of antibiotics. Brian Coombes, Ph.D., head of the department of biochemistry and biomedical science at McMaster University in Ontario speaks to the widespread impact antibiotic resistance has on public health, saying:3

"Superbugs should be a concern to everyone. Antibiotics are the foundation on which all modern medicine rests. Cancer chemotherapy, organ transplants, surgeries, and childbirth all rely on antibiotics to prevent infections. If you can't treat those, then we lose the medical advances we have made in the last 50 years."

More Dying From Superbugs Than Earlier Estimates

In their first report, the CDC estimated there were 2 million antibiotic-resistant infections reported in 2013, accounting for 23,000 deaths.4 The recently released report includes data not available in 2013, including electronic health records.

Writers of the 2019 report calculate the 2013 data missed nearly half of the cases and deaths.5 According to the new estimates 3 million each year are infected and 35,000 die. Put another way, on average, every 11 seconds someone in the U.S. is infected with an antibiotic-resistant bacterium, and someone dies every 15 minutes.

Other researchers believe even this estimate is too low and the true number of infections is likely much higher.6 Dr. Jason Burnham is an infectious disease specialist at Washington University. He and two colleagues surveyed data from 2010, expanding the definition of antibiotic resistant deaths.

The lower limit of their estimate of people who died in 2010 as the result of an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection is 153,113. The team believes their estimate indicates a need for better surveillance and reporting to address this crucial issue and establish a more accurate estimate of the burden of the infection, which may open more avenues for research funding.

As indicated in the CDC report, hospitals have improved tracking methods and slowed the spread of resistant germs by nearly 30% since 2013.7 Additionally, they identified a secondary infection linked to antibiotic use, Clostridioides difficile (C. diff).

This infection triggers deadly diarrhea after antibiotics upset the natural balance of bacteria in the digestive system. If deaths from C. diff are added to the CDC 2019 totals, more than 3 million infections and 48,000 deaths may be attributed to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These numbers are likely still a conservative estimate of the damage that could be attributed to multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Antibiotic Resistance Is an Evolving Challenge

According to The Washington Post, the CDC identified five germs representing the most urgent threat. The first three are well-known. They include carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), C. diff and drug-resistant gonorrhea. Each of these are resistant to nearly all antibiotics physicians have used to treat them, and statistics show they kill up to 50% of those who become septic.

Further, these bacteria have the ability to transfer their resistance to related bacteria. This may potentially increase the number and species of bacteria that are antibiotic-resistant. Two new pathogens were added to the list. The first is a yeast called Candida auris, which the CDC8 refers to as an “emerging fungus that presents a serious global health threat.”

The second is carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter bacteria, which the CDC reports is resistant to nearly all antibiotics. The new report added a classification of pathogens to watch, in which they placed 18 germs with the potential to spread further resistance.

The comparison in the 2013 and 2019 data drives home what experts have warned for decades — bacteria continue to evolve and mutate, developing the ability to fight off different types of antibiotics. As more antibiotics are used in agriculture and health care, they become less effective.

Developing Superbugs Spurred by Antibiotic Overuse

The CDC report links misuse of antibiotics to the impressive rise in resistant infections. In another study9 by the CDC, researchers stated at least 30% of antibiotics prescribed in the U.S. are unnecessary. Antibiotics used in physician offices and emergency rooms were analyzed, and the data revealed most of the unnecessary antibiotics were used for respiratory conditions triggered by viruses.

Put another way, 30% of the antibiotics prescribed in the U.S. equals 47 million prescriptions each year, placing patients at risk for allergic reaction or C. diff infections. In some cases, antibiotics are prescribed proactively, as in the case of erythromycin eye ointment in newborns to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum from gonorrhea and chlamydia.10

The antibiotic is not used universally throughout the U.S. or Europe to prophylactically treat infant pink eye since mothers who receive prenatal care are screened for gonorrhea and chlamydia and treated before the birth of their child. The issue with treatment of all babies is that 25% of all gonorrhea is now resistant to erythromycin.

Despite the fact the American Academy of Pediatrics no longer recommends the universal use of eye ointment, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force extended the 2011 recommendations citing a lack of prenatal care for many in the U.S. Dr. David Hyun from the Antibiotic Resistance Project at the Pew Charitable Trusts commented on the rising number of antibiotic resistant bacteria:11

“The fact that we’re seeing some of the greatest increases among resistant infections that are acquired outside of the hospital — combined with data we already have showing that approximately 1 in 3 outpatient prescriptions are completely unnecessary — underscores the need for improved antibiotic use in doctor’s offices and other non-hospital settings.”

Although overly prescribed antibiotics play a significant role in the development of superbugs, there are other large agrochemical contributors as well. A major source of human consumption of antibiotics comes from agricultural use. One CDC report12 showed livestock antibiotics have played a role in the development of resistant bacteria.

In 2013, estimates of antibiotic use on livestock accounted for 80% of all antibiotic use in the U.S.13 In a report in 2018,14 the FDA noted a 28% reduction in the sales and distribution of antibiotics earmarked for livestock since the FDA first compiled evidence in 2009.

Pesticide use also contributes to the development of multidrug-resistant bacteria, as I discussed in “Pesticides Compound Antibiotic Resistance.” The bottom line is, bacteria are affected by any chemical they contact and develop resistance up to 100,000 times faster after exposure to certain herbicides, like glyphosate or dicamba.

Hospital-Acquired Infections May Decline With Copper Beds

Hospital beds are another source of infection. Whether you have a planned or unplanned hospital admission, it should never be taken lightly. Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that if the person who occupied the bed before you was prescribed antibiotics, you had a greater potential for contracting C. diff.

More than 100,000 pairs of hospitalized individuals were compared from 2010 to 2015. When the previous occupants of a bed received antibiotics, the patient who used the bed after them had a 22% greater risk of developing C. diff. However, the authors of one study show that switching to copper bed frames may reduce that number significantly.15

In the new study, published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, it’s reported that copper beds in an intensive care unit had 95% fewer bacteria than traditional hospital beds. According to one of the scientists from the Medical University of South Carolina:16

“Hospital-acquired infections sicken approximately 2 million Americans annually, and kill nearly 100,000 — numbers roughly equivalent to the number of deaths if a wide-bodied jet crashed every day. Despite the best efforts by environmental services workers, they are neither cleaned often enough, nor well enough.”

Hospital beds are a source of nosocomial infection, or infections originating from a hospital source. Candida auris, one of the two new pathogens identified in the CDC report, are an intractable threat faced by hospitals, and have been found on hospital beds.

The findings from the study with copper beds indicate they may help infection control efforts and reduce the number of hospital-acquired infections. After the death of one man at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York from Candida auris, the hospital had to use special equipment to clean the room. The hospital president commented:

"Everything was positive — the walls, the bed, the doors, the curtains, the phones, the sink, the whiteboard, the poles, the pump. The mattress, the bed rails, the canister holes, the window shades, the ceiling, everything in the room was positive."

Know This Treatment if Infection Leads to Sepsis

The CDC recommends using basic precautions to halt the spread of pathogens, including washing your hands when needed and using a good handwashing technique. Dr. Helen Boucher, chief of infectious diseases at Tufts Medical Center, commented on the need to prepare for multidrug-resistant bacteria:17

“We want to have diagnostic tools and medical treatments for problems we know we’re going to have. But we also need to prepare for the kind of resistance that we could never predict. We know from history that bacteria and Mother Nature are smarter than we are.”

One medical treatment you must be aware of is a combination therapy of vitamin C, thiamine and steroids to improve your potential for survival from sepsis — a last-ditch effort by your immune system to fight an infection. Every year 1 million people suffer from sepsis and nearly half will die.

Dr. Paul Marik, chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in East Virginia, made the discovery while treating a patient with sepsis. Despite the treatment being harmless (it doesn’t make the patient any worse than they are) and a demonstrated reduction in mortality rates in his hospital from 40% to 8.5%, many practitioners continue to wait on further studies.

It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of sepsis early, as early treatment also increases the potential for survival. To learn more about sepsis and the treatment that could save the life of someone you know, see my past article, “Vitamin C Lowers Mortality in Severe Sepsis.”

How a lottery winner blew £10m winnings on family, booze, 4,000 women and cars

 Cache

For 10 mind-blowing years, Mickey Carroll worked like a demon to maintain his reputation as the “Lotto lout”, using his £9.7million jackpot to buy booze, drugs, sex and friends.

The money and the lifestyle are long gone, but as Mickey comes off his £10-an-hour shift as a coalman in Moray, Scotland, he says: “It didn’t go wrong – it was the best 10 years of my life for a pound.”

He is happy to celebrate the National Lottery’s 25th anniversary on Tuesday, thankful for the times he had after buying that £1 ticket in 2002, when he was just 19 and working as a binman in Norfolk.

Sitting in his hi-vis work gear in his rented flat, he says: “I don’t look back with any regrets that’s for sure.

"It was 10 years of fun for a pound, you can’t go wrong with that.

"I wouldn’t want to turn the clock back. But I live a good, free lifestyle now and I’m happier because I’ve got my life back.”

When he looks back on those 10 years, it is a miracle he can remember any of it.

He says: “I’d wake up, do three lines of Charlie and drink half a bottle of vodka before I got out of bed.

“I was a full-blown alcoholic, doing two bottles of vodka a day.”

He recalls wild holidays in Puerto Banus on the Costa del Sol with his mates.

“We used to go to the local whorehouse because the girls there were better looking.

“We’d get our own drugs first and be high on cocaine by the time we rocked up at the brothels.

“I drank vodka and fresh orange, any lager, cider, or whisky, as long as it was wet.

“I’d wake up in some strange places.”

The drinking and the brothels put an end to his short marriage to Sandra Aitken, who was seven months pregnant with their daughter when his lottery numbers came up.

Mickey, whose dad died when he was 10 and who was raised by his aunt and uncle after being physically abused by a family member, immediately gave £4million away.

He says: “I gave a million to mum, a million to my aunt and uncle because they took me in and I’ve always been close to them.

“I gave a million to the ex-wife’s mum, and a million to Sandra.”

That left £5.7million burning a hole in his pocket.

Sandra walked out in disgust shortly after they wed in 2003, accusing him of cheating on her with vice girls and surrounding himself with hangers-on.

Mickey, who boasts of bedding 4,000 women, does not dispute any of Sandra’s claims.

He says: “I spent the rest of the money on drugs and hookers, holidays and cars.”

Hell-bent on becoming “King of the Chavs”, he appeared in court more than 30 times, often arriving in flash cars, swigging cans of beer.

His Norfolk mansion “The Grange” was used for wild parties, and the lawn became a track for demolition car derbies. As a result, the luxury property soon fell into disrepair.

He says: “It lay derelict for about 10 years. My mate’s mum and dad lived in it until I kicked them out.

“I had another two houses, but it’s all gone – I sniffed ’em away.”

By 2005, his accountant warned he was down to his last million and as the money dwindled, the “friends’” and hangers-on began to drift away.

Enemies were also circling and one morning he found his six Rottweilers dead, their throats slit.

Mickey, who was jailed for affray in 2006, says: “Gangsters sent me pictures of my family. They threatened to chop my daughter up, and my whole family.

“They were dangerous guys, a Liverpool firm, so I paid them 130 grand.

"They backed off for a while, then there was a bit of an altercation and the boys in London sorted it out for me.”

By 2013, Mickey was broke, homeless and struggling to find work because of his reputation.

He says: “I’d turn up at interviews and they’d say, ‘We just wanted to see whether it was you or not’.”

He eventually followed Sandra to Scotland, moving to Moray, where he was so broke he lived in a squalid hotel for down-and-outs.

He says: “It was a dive, but I had food and beer, all good.

“That was 2013. I was homeless for three months. Easy come, easy go.”

He worked at the Walkers biscuit factory in Aberlour before starting in a slaughterhouse.

He says: “I stayed there for five years until it shut down. I do miss the slaughterhouse.

"I loved it there. I’ve got my slaughterhouse licence. I’ll never lose that.”

He later got his coal job and now works seven days a week.

He says: “I’m a skint lottery winner. It’s got me quite a few women so I don’t mind. I’m living in a rented flat.

“I’m happy. I don’t have to look over my shoulder any more, no one’s going to hit me over the back of the head and rob me.

"I reckon I’m lucky to be alive. If I still had the money I’d probably be six feet under.”

As the lottery’s 25th-anniversary approaches, figures show that in the first six months of this financial year we spent £3.9billion on lottery tickets.

Mickey still plays, but warns: “Money really is the root of all evil.

“I do the lottery now and again. If it’s a big one I’ll chuck a few quid on it, hope to win and piss everyone off.

“If I won it again, I’d buy a house and go abroad for a while.

"Hangers-on just wanted to be around me for the money. I was a soft touch.

“That would be my advice to other winners. Don’t trust anyone, not even your f***ing family.”
