LED icosahedron shines for all the world to see

 Cache
Convex regular icosahedrons contain 30 edges and 12 vertices. This makes for an interesting math problem, but as demonstrated by this project out of the LVL1 hackerspace in Louisville, Kentucky, its geometry also presents an excellent target for a massive number of LEDs. Their build, in fact, consists of 708 programmable LEDs arranged facing inward […]

Louisville’s finest, Beatmaker Dr. Dundiff presents his very first band project called SGJAZZ… After last year’s very successful collaboration “Cool” with Otis Jr. and his standalone project “Muneybeats”, Dr. Dundiff and Jakarta Records team up once more for the beatmaker’s next project called SGJAZZ, a supergroup formed and crafted by Louisville’s finest musicians.Dr. Dundiff (done different) is a Hip-Hop/Neo-Soul producer based out of Louisville, KY. Producing music since 2010, Dundiff has released a lot of music. Most known for his ongoing collaboration with Otis Junior and their their debut EP “1moment2another” on Jakarta Records receiving wide daytime airplay and recognition from French tastemaker Radio NOVA, as well as 1.500.000 Mio. Streams via Spotify.SGJAZZ however is a Neo-Soul/Jazz project: All single members and particpants play together as well as they have their own projects. The group spent off days at Dr. Dundiff’s studio in Louisville, KY, playing around and creating the first foundations of the record. Idris Frederick laid down multiple chord progressions over a course of a few days. Dundiff then chopped and arranged these progressions and played drums over them. From there on everyone else wrote their parts to rest of the music. This process was quite quick and efficient and the album was recorded within a few months already. Dundiff then reached out to up and coming vocalists J.Lamotta and longtime collaborator K.Raydio to each write to a song. Though this album is primarily instrumental, these two features further establish the vibe SGJAZZ effortlessly creates.

Episode 36: Annie Pettry, Decca, Louisville, KY (Live from Lambstock -- Patrick Springs, VA)

 Cache

What first impressed me when I met Chef Annie Pettry was her quiet confidence. This executive chef of Decca Restaurant in Louisville, KY was kind and calm and cooked up a storm, but she wasn’t brash or trying to prove herself in conversation or otherwise. She was real, and I immediately liked her. Not to mention her food! But I will mention it just to tempt you: this time of year, Decca’s menu includes Butternut Squash Ravioli, Wood-Grilled Broccoli, and Rainbow Trout with Seared Cucumber. As a chef, she’s been featured in Food & WineTasting Table, and Garden & Gun, and she won best barbecue at Cochon 555, so I tried not to be intimidated. I got over that fear fast, though, during our chat at Lambstock 2016. It was just too hot to be nervous.

A Decade of Care: Hanes Launches 10th National Sock Drive to Help the Homeless; Tops 3 Million Donated Pairs

 Cache

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., November 22, 2019 /3BL Media/ – Small gifts often have the most meaning.

For the millions of people living homeless, a clean pair of socks is often described as “the gift of humanity.” Hanes, America’s No. 1 basic apparel, underwear and sock brand, is partnering with organizations fighting homelessness nationwide to deliver comfort to those who need it most through the Hanes National Sock Drive. The brand is marking 10 years of helping provide care and compassion during this year’s drive by:

  • Donating more than 250,000 pairs of socks directly to organizations fighting homelessness in all 50 states, along with Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Since the program’s inception in 2009, Hanes has provided more than 3 million pairs of socks – one of the most requested items by relief agencies – to help the homeless.

  • Giving an additional pair of socks for every order of any apparel placed in December on Hanes.com. Socks will be provided to local homeless shelters.

  • Partnering with Rainier Fruit Company for its second “Pears for Pairs” campaign, which is currently running in United Supermarkets, Harris Teeter, Wegmans, and Lunds & Byerlys stores. From late September through January, Rainier is donating a portion of the proceeds from bulk and bagged pear sales to the Hanes National Sock Drive. In 2018, the Pears for Pairs campaign resulted in 20,000 pairs of socks being donated to five nonprofits.

  • Offering consumers the opportunity to participate directly in the program by visiting www.hanes.com/donate to gift socks ($1), women’s underwear ($1), men’s underwear ($1.50) and bras ($6) that will be distributed in needed styles and sizes.

  • Continuing its 10-year collaboration with Invisible People and its founder, Mark Horvath, to help raise awareness about homelessness. Invisible People uses innovative storytelling, educational resources and advocacy to help change how the public views homelessness and those living homeless in the United States and abroad.

“Most of us take basic apparel for granted, but we know a new, clean pair of socks can mean a lot to those experiencing homelessness,” said Sidney Falken, chief branding officer, HanesBrands. “We are committed to bringing a little comfort to those who need it most – and it is incredibly gratifying to have others, including many individuals across the country, join us in this effort.”

More than 100 agencies, including The Salvation Army Bell Shelter (Bell, California), Homeward Bound (Asheville, North Carolina) and Compassion Outreach Ministries (Columbus, Ohio), have received sock donations from Hanes.

“Small things really do make a big difference to our clients,” said Steve Lytle, director of The Salvation Army Bell Shelter. “The smile on a client’s face when she received a clean pair of socks for the first time in months was priceless. There was joy in her eyes and it was clear that the socks were the most precious gift she could have received in that moment. Another client said his gift of clean socks was a sign that there are people who care and that his life did matter.”

Homeward Bound distributes more than 2,000 pairs of socks a month to those living homeless.

“Homelessness is a community problem and it will take everyone’s support to help end the epidemic,” said Ashley Campbell, the agency’s outreach specialist. “Right now, some of your neighbors are living outside, in tents and under bridges, vulnerable to inclement weather and violence, stripped of dignity and our collective respect.

“There are so many ways to help,” Campbell continued. “Educate yourself about homelessness in your community, volunteer at your local agency fighting this issue or simply make a donation that would help a nonprofit save its limited resources.”

Jeffrey Tabor, director of TWO Men’s Ministry House for Compassion Outreach Ministries of Ohio, added that there is no donation too small to be used for good to fulfill a basic human need.

“Imagine the importance of just one pair of socks when you are focused on keeping your feet dry and warm during the cold winter months,” Tabor said. “That’s why we are so thankful for our partnership with Hanes, which has fulfilled an immediate, basic human need for so many people.”

Lytle underscores, however, that sometimes it all boils down to human contact. “Acknowledge people who are experiencing homelessness with a smile or hello,” he said. “By engaging with a person who is experiencing homelessness we are saying ‘I see you and you matter.’”

The Hanes National Sock Drive is part of Hanes for Good, the corporate responsibility program of Hanes’ parent company, HanesBrands (NYSE:HBI).

Drug/Sex Trafficking and Agricultural Labor

 Cache
Interesting article here connecting the cartels and 'cheap' ag labor.

...Many Americans look to our small towns and rural areas as a refuge from some of the criminal problems in the larger cities, yet if agricultural interests are allowed to continue bringing in other countries’ criminals, rural areas might have it worse in the end.

Yesterday, Beth Warren of the Louisville Courier Journal posted an enthralling and detailed report on how El Mencho’s Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) has penetrated many of our rural communities in Kentucky and all over the country with its drug trafficking network. However, an otherwise well-researched article largely glosses over the fact that [the] reason trafficking can blend into these areas is because of the endless stream of illegal immigrant labor serving as both willing and reluctant traffickers for the cartels.

Warren portrays the immigrants in a better light and reports on concerns that “Hispanic workers find themselves looked at with suspicion because of political rhetoric that brands the drug trade and immigration as one and the same.” Nonetheless, she inadvertently gives away the farm, writing that “the cartel exploits its connections with otherwise hard-working immigrants.” Hence, the illegal alien laborer pipeline of drugs, gangs, and crime into Norman Rockwell’s America....
Well, that adds a bit of spice to the stew.

College Football Week 14 Awards

 Cache

With Week 14 of the 2019 season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the offensive, defensive, coordinator, team and freshman from Week 14

College Football Week 14 Awards

Offensive Player of the Week: J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State

Dobbins ran for 211 yards and four touchdowns over 31 carries and added 49 receiving yards on two catches in Ohio State’s win over Michigan.

Defensive Player of the Week: Zakoby McClain, LB, Auburn

McClain recorded 11 tackles (one for a loss) and returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in Auburn’s win over Alabama.

Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Eddie Gran, Kentucky

Behind receiver/quarterback Lynn Bowden, Kentucky recorded 521 total yards (12.4 yards a play) and 45 points in Saturday’s win over Louisville. The Wildcats completed only one pass but gashed the Cardinals for 517 yards on the ground. Gran’s ability to tweak the offense to fit Bowden’s strengths during the year is a big reason why Kentucky finished 7-5.

Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Jim Leonhard, Wisconsin

Leonhard’s defense limited Minnesota to 372 total yards, forced two turnovers and ended two drives on fourth-down stops. The Badgers also recorded five sacks, eight tackles for a loss and nine pass breakups in the 38-17 victory.

Team of the Week: Auburn

Auburn improved its record under Gus Malzahn to 3-1 in matchups against Alabama in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers were outgained (515 to 354) but made timely plays on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Bo Nix delivered clutch throws in a solid outing (15 of 30 for 173 yards) and accounted for two total touchdowns. Auburn’s defense stepped up with two interceptions that were returned for scores and forced a field goal attempt that was missed on the Crimson Tide’s final possession.

Freshman of the Week (Offense): Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina

Howell helped North Carolina clinch its sixth victory of the season by throwing for 401 yards and three touchdowns on 23 completions against NC State on Saturday night.

Freshman of the Week (Defense): Tiawan Mullen, CB, Indiana

Mullen recorded eight tackles (2.5 for a loss), a forced fumble and four pass breakups in Indiana’s win over Purdue.

Golden Gophers fell short of winning the Big Ten West Division, but the 2019 season was a big-time step in the right direction for this program.

14. Michigan (9-3)

Week 14 Result: Lost to Ohio State

Wolverines have been outscored 119-66 over the last two games versus Ohio State. If Michigan wins its bowl game, Jim Harbaugh would have four 10-win seasons in five years in Ann Arbor.

15. Notre Dame (10-2)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Stanford

The Fighting Irish have won at least 10 games in three consecutive years for the first time since 1991-93.

16. Oregon (10-2)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Oregon State

Mario Cristobal is 13-1 as Oregon’s head coach at Autzen Stadium. The Ducks have also claimed 11 out of the last 12 meetings against Oregon State.

17. Memphis (11-1)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Cincinnati

Tigers one win away from conference title and a trip to the Cotton Bowl.

18. Iowa (9-3)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Nebraska

Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley finishes his career (as a starter) with a perfect 9-0 mark in games against Minnesota and Nebraska.

19. Boise State (11-1)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Colorado State

Will Bryan Harsin stick with Jaylon Henderson at quarterback or switch back to freshman Hank Bachmeier for the Mountain West title game?

20. Appalachian State (11-1)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Troy

Quarterback Zac Thomas has tossed 10 touchdown passes over the last three games. Up next: The fourth matchup against Louisiana (in the Sun Belt title game) in two years.

21. Virginia (9-3)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Virginia Tech

Big day by Bryce Perkins helps complete Coastal chaos, as Virginia becomes seventh team to win division in seven years.

22. Cincinnati (10-2)

Week 14 Result: Lost to Memphis

Bearcats get another shot at Memphis this Saturday. Who will start at quarterback for Luke Fickell’s team this week?

23. Navy (9-2)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Houston

Midshipmen gashed Houston for 447 rushing yards in a 56-41 victory on Saturday night.

24. Air Force (10-2)

Week 14 Result: Defeated Wyoming

Air Force has eight seasons of at least 10 victories in its program history. Three of those have come under Troy Calhoun’s watch.

25. USC (8-4)

Week 14 Result: Off Week

Was USC’s 8-4 record enough to save Clay Helton’s job?

Wicked good slang? Uff da to that.

 Cache

I am always a sucker for a list, and one promising to reveal the “most popular” slang in each state was pure, unadulterated click bait.

Of course, I knew even without clicking through the first 20 states that “wicked” would be the slang term for the august Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

As slang words go, wicked – a modifier that more or less stands in for “very” - is just fine. And it certainly is associated with our fair state. But – and maybe this is the company I keep – the only time I hear it used is in movies that are set in Boston – some of which, admittedly, are wicked good. That and when people are making fun of people who use the word wicked as a modifier. As in wicked awesome, wicked pissah, wicked smaht.

I also see wicked (pissah/smaht) on tee-shirts that street vendors sell.

But actually hear it in a conversation that Ben Affleck or Denis Leary, playing some Southie tough, isn’t part of? Nah…

Rhode Island’s slang word is “packy”, which would have done for Massachusetts as well. And is actually a word that everyone I know has used at some time or another. (For those who don’t speak New England, a packy is a package (liquor) store. If you’re lucky, there’s a wicked awesome packy on your corner.)

Or they could have gone with “youse”, which is attributed to Pennsylvania, but could just as easily been used for Massachusetts (or Rhode Island).

Connecticut’s word is “apizza” (pronunced “abeets”), which is their way of saying pizza or pizza joint. I have never heard this one before, but I’ve got to wonder. I don’t remember a movie called Mystic Abeets, do you. My cousin MB, who lived for many years in Connecticut before regaining her senses and moving back to Massachusetts, is at present in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on a cruise ship. I will have to check with her.

Another New England slang word I’d never heard is “XYZ”, which in New Hampshire means “eXamine Your Zipper.” In other words, “close the barn door.”

In Vermont, a “dink” is an “idiot”. I haven’t heard that word in years – decades even – but back in the day, it was not uncommon to call an idiot a dink in these parts.

Maine’s most popular slang word is “ayuh.” As with “wicked”, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone use the word “ayuh” (think “yup”), other than in a movie portraying Mainers or when making fun of/pretending to be a Mainer. But in real life? Nah…

Some of the slang words on the list don’t seem particular to any particular state.

Something that’s great in California is “the bomb”. But isn’t that used pretty much everywhere?

Folks in Kansas who spend too much time at the packy “get loaded”, as they do here as well.

New Yorkers say “deadass” for “really” or “seriously,” which folks in these parts have been known to say. But New York is right next door, so…(We are more likely to say that someone is a “grownass” man or woman, which is a variation on a theme.)

“No see ums” are teeny-tiny bugs, whether you’re in Florida or anywhere else, no? Maybe there are just a lot more of them if Florida.

And “snowbirds” are Northerners fleeing to the South for the winter, to Arizona or anyplace else that’s warm. But it’s listed as Arizona slang.

Other terms were new to me. I like that someone in Arkansas who’s impatient is “bowed up.” If you’re laughing really hard in Delaware, you’re “bagging up.” “Spendy” is Oregonian for expensive. I may adopt that one.

A party before a function is a “pre-funk” in the state of Washington. Good one!

I kind of got a kick out of folks in Illinois referring to Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive as “LSD”. Knowing the slang for popular spots always separates the natives from the tourists. (No one in Boston says Massachusetts Avenue. It’s Mass Ave. And Commonwealth Avenue is Comm Ave. I’ll leave it to my cousin Ellen – at present a snowbird wintering in Florida – to let me know whether or not people in Chicago actually do say that someone is on LSD…)

A few of the slang terms were for local food or bev options. One was especially ghastly:

A “hot brown” is an open-faced sandwich that was introduced to the state of Kentucky in 1926 at the Brown Hotel in Louisville. The toasted sandwich features a slice of bread topped with turkey and bacon and a Mornay sauce of grated Gruyere.

Not that I need another reason to stay out of Kentucky.

Montanans say “cowboy up” instead of “man up.” Thanks you, Montana, for letting Red Sox fans adopt this term during our team’s ill-fated pennant run in 2003. It may not have worked then, but there must have been some residual magic that produced the Red Sox’ first World Series win in 86 years in 2004. Cowboy up, indeed!

There’s an odd bit of slang in South Dakota: “kattywampus” for crooked. Wonder how many tongues that word actually rolls off of…

To the north of the land of kattywampus, North Dakotans say “uff da” when they mean “oy vey.”

A fun list to browse through, even though it’s one of those annoying ones you have to view one state/page at a time.

At any rate, I found the list entertaining. But what do I know? I’m just a Masshole…

Family poisons Christian convert from Islam, Democratic Governor vetoes ban of Down Syndrome baby abortions, 12-year-old boy fed 9,000 homeless

 Cache

It’s Wednesday, November 27th, A.D. 2019. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I’m Adam McManus.

By Adam McManus (adam@theworldview.com)

Family poisons Christian convert from Islam

If a Muslim converts to Christianity in Uganda it can be dangerous.   That alleged “apostasy” is seen as a capital offense against the false god Allah and is often met with anger, hatred and violence.

Ronald Nayekuliza, a Ugandan father of four, was recently poisoned by his extended family because of his newfound Christian faith.  Ronald was attending a memorial service for his father in Kokola village in eastern Uganda on November 10th when he was poisoned with pesticides in his food, reports International Christian Concern.

According to Morning Star News, while Ronald survived, the poisoning has created a lot of fear for Christians in the community, prompting them to stay home from attending church on Sunday, Nov. 18.

This is the prayer request from one of them. “We need prayers so that God may guide us as we face uncertainty of tomorrow within a hostile environment of Muslim relatives.”

Louisville: Christian photographers must take pics of homosexual wedding

A Christian wedding photographer filed a suit last week against the City of Louisville, Kentucky for an ordinance that would force her to photograph homosexual weddings and prevents her from posting her religious beliefs on her website, reports ChristianHeadlines.com.

Alliance Defending Freedom filed the suit in federal court on behalf of Chelsey Nelson, who owns a studio, Chelsey Nelson Photography.

The lawsuit says, “Chelsey believes that God designed marriage as a gift to people of all faiths, races, and backgrounds and that God ordained marriage to be a covenant between one man and one woman. Chelsey’s views on marriage come from her personal interpretation of the Bible and the denominational teachings of the Southern Baptist Convention and her church.

Ephesians 5:11 declares, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”

Democratic Governor vetoes ban of Down Syndrome baby abortions

Last Thursday, Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf vetoed a bill that would have banned abortions over a diagnosis that an unborn baby has Down syndrome.  He did so just a day after it passed the GOP-controlled Pennsylvania legislature, reports Faithwire.com.

The state allows women to get abortions for any reason, except to select a gender, up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Sadly, in America, 90 percent of the unborn children who are diagnosed as having Down Syndrome are aborted.

Secret documents reveal Chinese detention camps for 1.5 million Muslims

Documents leaked on Sunday expose new details about how the Chinese government is using a network of detention centers to brainwash 1.5 million Muslims in Western China, reports the Christian Post.

The documents, called “The China Cables”, contradict the Chinese Communists’ claim that the network of detention centers constructed across Xinjiang in recent years only exist as places of voluntary re-education to help Muslims with extremist tendencies get on the right path.

Compassionate 12-year-old boy has fed 9,000 homeless

And finally, Symond Boschett is no ordinary middle schooler. Indeed, while many of his classmates are caught up in video games and sports, he is devoting himself to feeding the homeless, reports Faithwire.com.

Symond, who is just 12 years of age, has even set up his own non-profit to help him carry out his charitable mission — he was just eight when he launched “Share Hope USA.”

Symond’s dream was birthed when his father drove past a homeless man on the freeway who was holding up a sign with the plea, “Need money to eat, please help.”

Immediately, the inspirational young man knew he had to act. “I had $5 in my pocket, and I wanted to give it to him, but we had already passed him, and so I told my dad, ‘I want to help them,’” he recalled. “And he said, ‘Well, I can turn around and we can go give him the $5.’ I said, ‘You don’t understand, I want to help them all.’”

Following this exchange, and with the support of his dad, Symond set up “Share Hope USA” almost immediately. He said, “We bring [food] out to wherever the homeless are, under the overpasses, behind the freeways. We bring them hot meals.”

The group has since fed some 9,000 needy people.

Isaiah 58:10 says : “If you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday”

AT&T's 5G network launching to consumers soon alongside Note 10+ 5G

 Cache
AT&T 5G logo

AT&T first launched its 5G network nearly one year ago, but it's only ever been available to business customers. That'll finally be changing soon.

AT&T will launch low-band 5G coverage for consumers in the coming weeks. It'll be available in five markets at first: Indianapolis, IN; Pittsburgh, PA; Providence, RI; Rochester, NY; and San Diego, CA.

The big blue carrier says that it'll launch its 5G network in several more markets soon, and those include Boston, MA; Las Vegas, NV; Milwaukee, WI; New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; Birmingham, AL; Bridgeport, CT; Buffalo, NY; Louisville, KY; San Jose, CA; and others. AT&T plans to have nationwide 5G coverage in the first half of 2020.

You can check out coverage maps for all of AT&T's 5G markets right here.

Also launching is the first smartphone that'll have access to AT&T's 5G network. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G is AT&T's first low-band 5G phone, and it'll be available for pre-order starting November 25th. Pricing will be set at $43.34 per month for 30 months or $1,299.99 full retail.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G

Customers who want to sign up for 5G will be able to get it for no extra charge on AT&T's Unlimited Extra and Unlimited Elite plans, which cost $75 and $85 per month, respectively.

Finally, it's worth noting that this 5G coverage is a bit different than AT&T's other 5G offerings. The 5G network that's launching to consumers in the coming weeks uses low-band spectrum, which is better at traveling longer distances and penetrating buildings but isn't as fast as millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum.

5G+ uses that mmWave spectrum, and it's the brand of 5G that AT&T currently offers to business customers in parts of 21 cities. AT&T says it plans to offer its 5G+ coverage in parts of 30 cities in early 2020.

And then there's 5GE, which is AT&T's name for its LTE-Advanced coverage. 5GE uses technologies like 4x4 MIMO, 256 QAM, and carrier aggregation to offer faster download speeds. It's avialable in more than 500 markets and is supported on many smartphones, including the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max; iPhone XS and XS Max; iPhone 8 and 8 Plus; Galaxy Note 9 and Note 10; Galaxy S9 and S10; and the LG G8 and V40.

Now that AT&T 5G is going live for consumers, are you going to jump onto the network?
