Morality and Monastic Revival in Post-Mao Tibet

Caple, J. E., Mar 2019, Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press. 232 p. (Contemporary Buddhism).

Research output: Book/ReportBookResearchpeer-review

The speed and extent of the Tibetan Buddhist monastic revival make it one of the most extraordinary stories of religious resurgence in post-Mao China. At the end of the 1970s, there were no working monasteries; within a decade, thousands had been reconstructed and repopulated. Most studies have focused on the political challenges facing Tibetan monasteries, emphasizing their relationship to the Chinese state. Yet, in their efforts to revive and develop their institutions, monks have also had to negotiate a rapidly changing society, playing a delicate balancing act fraught with moral dilemma as well as political danger. Drawing on the recent “moral turn” in anthropology, this volume, the first full-length ethnographic study of the subject, explores the social and moral dimensions of monastic revival and reform across a range of Geluk monasteries in northeast Tibet (Amdo/Qinghai Province) from the 1980s on.

Author Jane Caple’s analysis shows that ideas and debates about how best to maintain the mundane bases of monastic Buddhism—economy and population—are intermeshed with those concerning the proper role and conduct of monks and the ethics of monastic-lay relations. Facing a shrinking monastic population, monks are grappling with the impacts of secular education, demographic transition, rising living standards, urbanization, and marketization, all of which have driven debates within Buddhism elsewhere and fueled perceptions of monastic decline. Some Tibetans—including monks—are even questioning the “good” of the mass form of monasticism that has been a distinctive feature of Tibetan society for hundreds of years. Given monastic Buddhism’s integral position in Tibetan community life and association with Tibetan identity, Caple argues that its precarity in relation to Tibetan society raises questions about its future that go well beyond the issue of religious freedom.

The offensive line interrupted the flow of the offense last week leaving the Rams with very little opportunity to operate their scheduled offense among the depth. None of the Rams’ five expected starters on the offensive line played last week, so it was an extremely young and inexperienced line. In terms of rotation, there wasn’t a ton on the line last week with rookie RT Bobby Evans playing every snap while rookie LT David Edwards C.J. Anderson Jersey , LG Jamil Demby and C Aaron Neary played all but the final few series. Demby slid into center for a bit, but a bad snap might have erased that from game situations and relegated it to more practice.Defensively, the Rams looked fine last week though there needs to be more pressure on the quarterback. The run defense was strong and coverage was a plus. We’ll see if we can get more coming off the edge in obvious passing situations.TV/Radio ScheduleDate: Saturday, August 17, 2019Time: 10:00pm ET/7:00pm PTLocation: Aloha Stadium | Honolulu, HawaiiNFL Network replay: Sunday, August 18, 4:00pm ET/1:00pm PTNational Channel: NFL NetworkLocal Channel: CBS 2/KCBSAnnouncers: Andrew Siciliano (play-by-play), Maurice Jones-Drew, Mina Kimes (analysts), Jaime Maggio (sideline reporter)Radio (English): ESPN 710 AMAnnouncers: J.B. That doesn't mean there are no issues to address. For coach Sean McVay, it starts with himself.McVay was again critical of his own play calling, this time in the Rams' 23-20 win at the Denver Broncos on Sunday, believing it to be responsible for continued struggles by the offense in the red zone and a season-high five sacks of quarterback Jared Goff."To be 6-0 in this league is really hard, but we want to focus on our process, our standard of performance, and that's focusing on getting better and getting better as the season progresses," McVay said Monday night. "Nobody stops the season after six weeks. If they did and they said this is when everything is finalized, then, hey Austin Blythe Jersey , maybe we could enjoy it and appreciate that, but there is a lot of football left."The Rams scored just two touchdowns in five trips into the red zone. Despite averaging 32.7 points per game, the third-highest total in the league, they have scored touchdowns on just 56.7 percent of red-zone possessions.McVay blamed his failure to stick with the flow of the game for those issues. He pointed to the fourth play of the game when he called a first-down pass from the Denver 12. Goff's throw to running back Todd Gurley was incomplete, and it led to the Rams settling for a 26-yard field goal by Cairo Santos."Anytime that you're in the role that I am, our job is to put the players in the best spots," McVay said. "You don't want to waste plays. My gut told me to take a timeout in that instance, and I didn't do it and it led to us not executing the way we are accustomed to. That's a result of the operation that starts with me, and that's an instance right there."McVay also said his approach was responsible for the pressure Goff faced, with Broncos outside linebacker Bradley Chubb taking advantage. One call McVay cited had a tight end as the primary blocker on the fifth overall selection in the 2018 draft, while another at the start of a two-minute drill was too slow developing to keep Chubb at bay.The Rams had allowed a total of six sacks in their first five games Sean Mannion Jersey , but Chubb had three of Denver's five."I do think it's unfair to the linemen to think that those were a result of their actual production when, in fact, most of those to me are pegged on some of the plays and spots I put our guys in," McVay said.McVay said the onus is on himself to continue to improve, looking for the same high standard he asks of his players."Those plays didn't work out in our favor, but they didn't really go in alignment with some of the flow and the feel of the game with the way we were running the football, and those are things you hopefully get better with and learn from experience," McVay said.Still, McVay is pleased the Rams continue to find ways to overcome adversity. It is a trend he hopes continues at the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday."Can't say enough about how resilient and what a great job guys have done finishing out games, finding a way to get wins, but our focus and concentration is on now getting ready for a tough division opponent Jamon Brown Jersey ," McVay said. But as the wins keep piling up for the Rams, so do the injuries.Wide receiver Cooper Kupp sustained a sprained knee when he his left leg bent back awkwardly on a horse-collar tackle by Broncos safety Darian Stewart.Kupp, who leads the team with five touchdown receptions, is not likely to play at the 49ers on Sunday and is week to week."Unfortunate for Cooper that he probably will miss this week, but thank goodness that it wasn't something that looked like it could be season-ending," McVay said.Left guard Rodger Saffold also sustained a sprained knee. Outside linebacker Matt Longacre was limited because of back spasms, and defensive end Michael Brockers sustained a sprained AC joint in his shoulder. However, McVay does not believe any of those injuries are serious.

Exxon knew — and so did coal

Story 352923584

This story was originally published by HuffPost and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration.

“Exxon knew.” Thanks to the work of activists and journalists, those two words have rocked the politics of climate change in recent years, as investigations revealed the extent to which giants like ExxonMobil and Shell were aware of the danger of rising greenhouse gas emissions even as they undermined the work of scientists.

But the coal industry knew, too — as early as 1966, a newly unearthed journal shows.

In August, Chris Cherry, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, salvaged a large volume from a stack of vintage journals that a fellow faculty member was about to toss out. He was drawn to a 1966 copy of the industry publication Mining Congress Journal; his father-in-law had been in the industry and he thought it might be an interesting memento.

Cherry flipped it open to a passage from James R. Garvey, who was the president of Bituminous Coal Research Inc., a now-defunct coal mining and processing research organization.

“There is evidence that the amount of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere is increasing rapidly as a result of the combustion of fossil fuels,” wrote Garvey. “If the future rate of increase continues as it is at the present, it has been predicted that, because the CO2 envelope reduces radiation, the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere will increase and that vast changes in the climates of the earth will result.”

“Such changes in temperature will cause melting of the polar icecaps, which, in turn, would result in the inundation of many coastal cities, including New York and London,” he continued.

Cherry was floored.

“It pretty well described a version of what we know today as climate change,” said Cherry. “Increases in average air temperatures, melting of polar ice caps, rising of sea levels. It’s all in there.”

In a discussion piece immediately following Garvey’s article, Peabody Coal combustion engineer James R. Jones noted that the coal industry was merely “buying time” before more air pollution regulations came into effect. “We are in favor of cleaning up our air,” he wrote. “Everyone can point to examples in his own community where something should be done. Our aim is to have control that does not precede the technical knowledge for compliance.”

Climate change is not Cherry’s area of study, but he was struck by how the tone of the articles differed from the way many fossil fuel companies talk about climate change today. Rather than engage in denial, the articles offered a fairly straightforward acknowledgment of the emerging science. (This reporter is also a writer for UT’s Tickle College of Engineering, where Cherry teaches.)

As Cherry did some of his own digging, he soon realized his discovery could be the first evidence that the coal industry was aware of the impending climate crisis more than half a century ago — a finding that could open mining companies to the type of litigation that the oil industry is now facing.

Decades of denial

While Peabody Energy, the largest private-sector coal company in the world and the largest producer of coal in the U.S., now acknowledges climate change on its website, it has been directly and indirectly involved in obfuscating climate science for decades. It funded dozens of trade, lobbying, and front groups that peddled climate misinformation, as The Guardian reported in 2016.

As recently as 2015, Peabody Energy argued that carbon dioxide was a “benign gas essential for all life.”

“While the benefits of carbon dioxide are proven, the alleged risks of climate change are contrary to observed data, are based on admitted speculation, and lack adequate scientific basis,” the company wrote in a letter that year to the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

At the heart of big coal’s denial campaign was Fred Palmer, who served as Peabody’s senior vice president of government relations from 2001 to 2015. In 1997, Palmer founded the Greening Earth Society, a now-defunct industry front group that argued that burning fossil fuels was good for the planet. The group was based in the same office as the Western Fuels Association, a consortium of coal suppliers and coal-fired utilities that Palmer also ran.

“Every time you turn your car on and you burn fossil fuels and you put CO2 into the air, you’re doing the work of the Lord,” Palmer told a Danish documentary team in 1997. “That’s the ecological system we live in.”

Asked for comment, a Peabody spokesperson told HuffPost:“Peabody recognizes that climate change is occurring and that human activity, including the use of fossil fuels, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. We also recognize that coal is essential to affordable, reliable energy and will continue to play a significant role in the global energy mix for the foreseeable future. Peabody views technology as vital to advancing global climate change solutions, and the company supports advanced coal technologies to drive continuous improvement toward the ultimate goal of near-zero emissions from coal.”

Palmer, who did not respond to HuffPost’s request for comment, continues to carry the torch. He now works as an energy policy adviser to The Heartland Institute, a Chicago-based think tank whose climate denial is so severe that even ExxonMobil abandoned funding it and its climate denial efforts a decade ago. In 2011, leaked memos showed that the institute paid contrarian scientists like Craig Idso, founder of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, $11,600 a month to promote carbon dioxide as beneficial to the environment.

The group sits at the heart of a broader right-wing misinformation network funded in large part by hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer and his daughter, Rebekah, both Republican mega-donors who backed President Donald Trump and financed projects such as Breitbart News and Cambridge Analytica, the data firm considered key to Trump’s 2016 win. Palmer’s daughter, Downey Magallanes, was a top policy adviser at Trump’s Interior Department before joining oil giant BP in September 2018.

All of this was taking place well after climate change had become a commonly understood idea in the scientific community. A 1965 report from President Lyndon Johnson’s Science Advisory Committee was the first from the White House to address climate change (and is likely what precipitated the Mining Congress Journal article). “The climate changes that may be produced by the increased CO2 content could be deleterious from the point of view of human beings,” it warned. In 1988, NASA scientist James Hansen testified to Congress about what was then known as the “greenhouse effect.” And in 1992, the United Nations established the Framework Convention on Climate Change, an international treaty to begin addressing the problem.

But as this consensus emerged, so too did a wave of industry-funded climate denial via vast, shadowy networks of front groups, public relations campaigns, and scientists for hire.

Pulling back the curtain

In 2015, journalists at InsideClimate News, the Los Angeles Times, and Columbia University exposed internal ExxonMobil documents showing that the company’s scientists had a deep understanding of climate change even as Exxon worked publicly to downplay that science.

Twenty state attorneys general launched an “Exxon Knew” campaign, which eventually led to communities across the country filing at least 14 legal challenges against Exxon and other fossil fuel companies. One lawsuit, from the New York state attorney general’s office, went to trial on October 22 and focuses on how the company accounted for the costs of potential future regulations on climate change. The Massachusetts attorney general filed another suit on October 24, this time claiming the company had engaged in deceptive advertising and misled investors about the systemic financial risks to its business posed by fossil fuel-driven climate change. Earlier this month, two of Hawaii’s biggest municipalities sued Exxon and other big oil companies to recoup the costs of adapting to rising seas and more violent storms.

Evidence of what fossil fuel companies knew about climate change and when is critical to the legal strategy of those seeking damages for carbon dioxide emissions. If fossil fuel companies were aware of their products’ harmful effects on the planet, they could be held liable for damages.

Legal liability boils down to four factors, said David Bookbinder, chief counsel for the Niskanen Center, which is representing counties in Colorado that have filed suits: one, whether the defendants knew that their products would cause climate change; two, what they told or did not tell the public about the consequences of using their products; three, the extent of injuries caused by climate change; and four, whether the defendants’ actions have led to a portion of those injuries. What the plaintiffs in these suits can prove remains to be seen.

What we do know is that coal, when burned, has by far the biggest climate footprint of any fossil fuel, producing more carbon dioxide per unit than oil or gas. In the U.S. alone, coal produced 65 percent of the power sector’s planet-warming emissions. The 1966 article in the Mining Congress Journal certainly raises questions about what the coal industry knew at the time.

Robert Brulle, a professor emeritus of sociology and environmental science at Drexel University, authored a recent paper that suggests the coal industry must have known quite a bit, given how prominently it positioned itself in the climate denial movement.

Brulle researched 12 major groups and coalitions that argued against mandatory regulation of carbon dioxide from 1989 to 2015 — which he calls the “climate change countermovement.” That countermovement included 2,000 different businesses, political or social groups, as well as other organizations, but Brulle found that 179 core organizations belonged to multiple coalitions. Coal companies and predominantly coal-burning utilities were the most prevalent. He describes oil and gas companies as “more of a marginal player” by comparison.

“The coal mining industry — the utilities that were burning it for electricity, along with the railroads who were hauling it — and manufacturing industries like steel were the first corporate forces to become climate deniers and try to block action on climate policy,” said Kert Davies, founder and director of the Climate Investigations Center. “They fought the hardest because they had the biggest existential threat.”

Where do we go from here?

In the aftermath of the 1973 oil embargo, Exxon and other oil giants leased large parcels of land for coal mining with the goal of manufacturing synthetic fuels and lowering U.S. dependence on the Middle East.

Some previously released documents show that Exxon’s scientists began advising that the world phase out coal as a fuel as early as 1979. In one scenario, the Exxon scientists concluded that non-fossil fuels would need to be substituted for coal beginning in the 1990s to keep carbon dioxide levels below atmospheric concentrations of 440 parts per million. In 1999, Exxon merged with Mobil, and by 2002, ExxonMobil had dumped its coal assets.

Meanwhile, the coal industry tried to reinvent itself with the concept of “clean coal.” This as-yet-undelivered promise that carbon capture and other technological advances could lower coal’s environmental impact has been around for decades but resurged in the early 2000s as regulations seemed imminent.

The biggest proponent of this idea was the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, a coal front group that spent $35 million on public relations campaigns in 2008 alone, seeking to influence the election. A year later, ACCCE was caught sending Congress fraudulent letters opposing federal climate legislation and pretending to be from veterans, women’s, and civil rights groups. The incident led many members to leave the organization, but Peabody remains a member to this day.

“Its whole mission was to stop climate regulations but pretend that they were in favor of clean coal, which, of course, doesn’t exist,” said Davies.

Peabody Energy filed for bankruptcy protection in 2016, the same year carbon dioxide levels hit 400 parts per million. Eight other coal companies have filed for bankruptcy this year. Even as the Trump administration has promised a coal resurgence and rolled back Obama-era regulations, the industry’s profitability continues to experience a downward slide. If the slogan “Coal Knew” ever does take off, it’s unclear who’ll be left to sue.

This story was originally published by Grist with the headline Exxon knew — and so did coal on Nov 29, 2019.

昨日は、Thanksgiving Day(感謝際)

会社や学校、お店はどこもお休みです。
家族やお友達と集まって
『ターキー』を食べる日です。

(別名 Turkey Day)

Thanksgiving Day 2012

右矢印Thanksgiving Day 2016

Thanksgiving Day 2018

なぜ2017年が無いかというと

昨年は、お仕事をしていて

Thanksgivingをお祝い出来なかったのです!

さて、昨日の

Thanksgiving Day当日は

Thanksgivingでした。

お腹もいっぱいで

みんなとの楽しい時間で

心も満たされ

幸せなThanksgivingでした。

みなさんありがとう♡

今日も見て下さってありがとうございます♡

素敵な1日をお過ごしください

以下、Hawaii News Nowより

image

Hawaii News Nowより引用)

(画像:Hawaii News Nowより)

Dutch officials say 3 people, including children, injured in Hague stabbing attack

By Associated Press

THE HAGUE, Netherlands -  An assailant stabbed three people Friday night in a busy shopping district in the Netherlands, and police were searching for the suspect, authorities said.

It was the second stabbing incident with multiple victims in a major European city today.

Earlier today in London, a man wearing a fake explosive vest stabbed several people, killing two, before he was tackled by members of the public and then fatally shot by officers on London Bridge, authorities said. Police treated it as a terrorist attack.

A Dutch police spokeswoman said it was too early to say whether a terror motive was to blame for the attack in The Hague.

The victims were all minors. It was unclear whether any of their wounds were life-threatening or whether they might have been hurt when the crowds of holiday shoppers panicked, police said.

The 30 Best Things to Do in Portland This Weekend: Nov 29-Dec 1

 Cache
by Mercury EverOut Staff

Well, we're in it now. The home-stretch. Thanksgiving is in the rear-view, Christmas and New Year's is ahead, and in the meantime, the business of packing as much fun as possible into what's left of the year is underway, and this weekend's got a lot to choose from, including a whole comedy festival kicking off, Holiday celebrations lighting up the night, many musical adventures, some SATAN, and more! Hit the links below and plan your weekend accordingly

Jump to: Friday | Saturday | Sunday

Friday, Nov 29

SAINt JHN, Kodie Shane
Saint Jhn first showed up on my radar when he came in crooning alongside Blue Ivy Carter on “Brown Skin Girl,” a stand-out track from Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift. After some further digging, it quickly becomes clear why Yoncé invited the Guyanese-American rapper/singer/songwriter/producer, who grew up splitting time between Brooklyn and Guyana, for the track. Sonically speaking, everything is working on his sophomore full-length, Ghetto Lenny’s Love Songs, from opening track “Wedding Day” to slappable songs like “Trap” featuring Lil Baby, and “Who Do You Blame.” Now he’s touring in support of the project, with Kodie Shane, a Black, queer rapper from Atlanta, as opener. Shane’s recent vibey single “End Like That” should convince you to get to the Hawthorne in a prompt manner. (Fri Nov 29, 8 pm, Hawthorne Theatre, $22-25, all ages) JENNI MOORE

Ha-Ha Harvest Comedy Fest
The Ha Ha Harvest Comedy Festival is bringing a cornucopia of laughs to town this holiday weekend and with a line-up featuring hometown hero Nathan Brannon, LA oddball Ron Lynch, Denver’s Janae Burris and Adam Cayton-Holland, NYC’s Dave Hill, and more, we've got plenty to be thankful for. Boasting a multi-venue format that echoes the Bridgetown Comedy Festival days of yore, you’ll spend the entire weekend hopping between clubs and venues while catching beloved homegrown shows like Pitch, Please!, Minority Retort, and Spec Script, delightful offerings from out-of-towners, along with more traditional stand-up showcases. Visit the event website for a complete list of venues, performers, and shows, along with ticketing info. (Fri-Sun Nov 29-Dec 1, Various Locations, $29-79) CHIPP TERWILLIGER

Amenta Abioto, Noah Simpson Group
I just can’t shut my trap when it comes to Amenta Abioto, whose work is a fluid combination of jazz, hip-hop, soul, and African music. To see her perform live is a real treat—Abioto has been at the top of her game recently, having perfected her soul-stirring vocals, improvised song-construction, and spot-on comedic timing. (Fri Nov 29, 8 pm, Turn! Turn! Turn!, $5-10) JENNI MOORE

Sleepover Club, Dress Forms, Ex-Kids
Everett's Sleepover Club link up with Portland's Dress Forms and Ex-Kids for a Friday-night punk, garage and post-punk bill at No Fun. (Fri Nov 29, 9 pm, No Fun, $5)

Turnover, Men I Trust
Turnover is clearly having some sort of major growth spurt. A few years ago, the Virginia Beach band was part of emo’s new wave, cranking out buzzy pop-punk tunes on a couple of albums released by Run for Cover Records. But on Good Nature, Turnover completes its transition into a dreamy indie pop band, with chiming guitars, laid-back vocals, and gauzy vibes. Often when this kind of thing happens, the artist stays tight-lipped on the reasons, but Turnover is open and honest about the stylistic shift, which it attributes to a wider palette of influences over the past few years: vintage soul and blues, Frank Ocean, electronic, the Beach Boys, bossa nova music, and jazz. (Fri Nov 29, 8 pm, Wonder Ballroom, $25-28) BEN COLEMAN

ZooLights
One of Portland's most beloved holiday traditions returns, transforming the Oregon Zoo into winter wonderland of illuminated, multicolored brilliance, featuring over a million lights creatively arranged throughout the zoo. (Fri Nov 29, 5 pm, Oregon Zoo, $14.95-19.95, through Jan 1 2020)

Starving for Laughs: A Benefit for the Oregon Food Bank
Forget the buying and consuming part of Black Friday, and instead celebrate the laughing and helping part at this holiday comedy stand-up showcase benefitting the Oregon Food Bank, hosted by Jono Gindhart, Bryan Bixby, and Chase Anderson, with sets from Zehava Glazier, Chris Johnson, Cam Strong, Kandyce August, and Will Weldon. (Fri Nov 29, 7:30 pm, Kelly's Olympian, $10)

Snap! Y2K: The Missy Elliott Party
The November installment of the beloved monthly '90/'00s dance night invites you to come down and work off that Thanksgiving hangover with a little help from the sounds of Missy Elliott, along with resident DJ's Freaky Outty, Colin Jones, and Introcut. (Fri Nov 29, 9 pm, Holocene, $6-7)

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Chicago Bulls
When I was a kid, I’d load up EA’s Bulls vs. Blazers and the NBA Playoffs into the ol' Sega Genesis, and I'd rewrite history; Terry Porter always scored 70 points a game, and Michael Jordan won nothing. Hopefully tonight, when the Blazers take on the Chicago Bulls, they can bring a video game to life better than, say… any of the Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat movies. Because yiiiikes. (Fri Nov 29, 7 pm, Moda Center, $27 & Up) BOBBY ROBERTS

Sullivan King, Lick, Grabbitz, Swarm
Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist and EDM producer Sullivan King heads back up the coast for the Portland stop on the "Thank You For Raging" Tour. (Fri Nov 29, 7 pm, Roseland, $25)

Shpongle, Android Jones, Kayla Scintilla, VOLO, Luxora Major
Producer Simon Posford and flutist Raja Ram bring their pioneering psybient and psych-infused trance project across the pond to head up a special audio-visual experience in Portland. Android Jones, Kayla Scintilla, VOLO, and Luxora Major round out the proceedings, along with a full array of artisan vendors, stage performers, and more. (Fri Nov 29, 8:15 pm, Crystal Ballroom, $50 & Up)

Saturday, Nov 30

Kikagaku Moyo, Mope Grooves
Psychedelic five-piece Kikagaku Moyo started out busking on the streets of Tokyo in 2012, and now they’re touring the world as one of this decade’s most highly coveted acts. A couple years ago, the band came to town to play a pair of Pickathon sets, and, despite trying my best to make it to their performance at the Galaxy Barn, the venue hit capacity before I (and countless others) could make it inside. So it’s only right that Kikagaku Moyo—whose moniker translates to “geometric patterns” in Japanese—is making another visit to the City of Roses this fall. After all, Portland’s scene of eclectic, psychedelia-loving listeners is exactly the kind of audience the band wanted to engage when they left Japan. (Sat Nov 30, 8:30 pm, Crystal Ballroom, $20-22, all ages) JENNI MOORE

Brian Posehn
The beloved comedian, writer, and actor known for his roles on Mr. Show, W/ Bob and David, The Sarah Silverman Program, and most recently, The Mandalorian (he's the space-Uber driver who gets eaten by a giant ice worm thingy after picking up a fish-faced Horatio Sanz! Spoilers! It's a weird-ass show!) brings his unrivaled charm and wit back to town for a headlining show at Revolution Hall. (Sat Nov 30, 8 pm, Revolution Hall, $25-30, all ages)

Thievery Corporation, Brazilian Girls
An evening of dub, electronica, and trip hop with the Washington, D.C.-based recording artist and DJ collective headed up by Rob Garza and Eric Hilton. (Sat Nov 30, 8:30 pm, Roseland, $42.50-69.50)

The Sisters of Mercy: Divine Sketch Comedy
The Siren Theater is where you go if you want to be blessed by divine sketch comedy minds like the ones counted among The Sisters of Mercy: Shelley McLendon, Laura Sams, Lori Ferraro, Erin Jean O'Regan, and Marie Murphy. Tonight is the last chance to catch this show. Do not live a life absent of witnessing this comedy divinity! (Sat Nov 30, 8 pm, Siren Theater, $10-15)

Mr. Carmack
The rising Honolulu-based producer brings his experimental beats and EDM back to town for an all-ages stop on the "Immersion" Tour. (Sat Nov 30, 9 pm, Hawthorne Theatre, $19-22, all ages)

The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights
The Grotto's annual Festival of Lights celebration is a bonafide Portland tradition, transforming the serene grounds into one of the largest Christmas choral festival in the world. Walk a one-quarter mile long light trail, enjoy outdoor caroling, puppet shows, and a live petting zoo, and then take in one of over 190 concerts taking place in the Grotto's chapel. (Sat Nov 30, 5 pm, The Grotto, $6.50-12.50, all ages, through Dec 30)

Jana Crenshaw
Portland Singer/songwriter and theater score composer Jana Crenshaw takes over the Fixin' To for an early, all-ages show and a late-night, 21 & up performance celebrating the release of her latest, Bend & Break, which collects stand-out tracks from her previous three albums. Mic Crenshaw, Blacque Butterfly, Rain Ezra, Daisy Posada, Natalia Uribe, DonnaMation, and students of Ethos Music Center lend their talents to the proceedings. (Sat Nov 30, 12:30 pm & 9 pm, The Fixin' To, $7-10)

RAF, The Reverberations
Portland's RAF brings the sounds of England's mod movement to the Star Theater stage to celebrate the release of their latest album, with like-minded local psych-pop outfit the Reverberations rounding out the proceedings with their own '60s influenced sounds. (Sat Nov 30, 9 pm, Star Theater, $10-15)

La Fête du Macaron
A celebration of the French Macaron, filling the Pix pastry case with a wide variety of flavors. Also includes a contest to get your flavor carried at Pix past the celebration, and something called the "cupcake stomp," which seems like an abomination (why the hell would you want to destroy a perfectly good cupcake) but is supposedly "messy but fun." (Sat Nov 30, 2 pm, Pix/Bar Vivant)

Gloria!
The Portland Choir and Orchestra links up with Big Horn Brass for their annual Christmas concert at the Newmark Theatre, with over 150 performers bringing your favorite holiday classics to life in a wallet- and family-friendly performance. (Sat Nov 30, 2 pm & 7 pm, Newmark Theatre, $15-22)

Sunday, Dec 1

Lisa Prank, Rose Melberg
Seattleites have long sung the praises of their fave one-woman pop punk band, Lisa Prank (singer/songwriter Robin Edwards), and with good reason—her live shows are straight-up FIRE. Mining the fertile ground tilled by the Ramones, Shonen Knife, the Runaways, the Donnas, and various others of the riot grrrl persuasion, Edwards skillfully turns any room inside-out with her masterful expertise on electric guitar and a Roland MC-505 drum machine. Her newest release, Perfect Love Song, is more of the same mosh-pit perfection, guaranteed to jump-start any crowd into pogoing hysterics. Bring a sweat towel, you’ll need it! (Sun Dec 1, 9 pm, Doug Fir, $12-15) WM. STEVEN HUMPHREY

Morbid Angel, Watain, Incantation
Friends, have you accepted Satan into your heart and pledged fealty to the Dark One, embracing his message of materialism, sexual deviancy, and a rejection of the Judeo-Christian myths of yore? I can see some of you are still on the fence about this, unconvinced that a one-way ticket to Hades is the only way forward for all of us. If my message is not persuasive enough, please join me for tonight’s command performance by two of our finest death metal missionaries: Morbid Angel and Watain. The former are still promoting their 2017 album Kingdoms Disdained, a blistering collection that welcomed bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker back into the fold to help spread the gospel of evil. The latter comes to us from our outpost in Sweden to sing to us of sacred damnations and sleepless evils as they bathe us in animal blood. Hail Satan. (Sun Dec 1, 8 pm, Hawthorne Theatre, $30-35, all ages) ROBERT HAM

Breakfast with Santa
The Crystal Ballroom's Breakfast with Santa lets you and your family skip the mall and department store lines, giving you the chance to relax and enjoy a buffet style breakfast and house roasted coffee while waiting for a turn with Santa. It also happens to be one of the hottest tickets in town. (Sun Dec 1, 8:30 am & 11 am, Crystal Ballroom, $13-18, all ages)

Black Nativity
PassinArt presents this staging of Langston Hughes' "gospel song play," reinterpreting and reimagining the Nativity story. (Sun Dec 1, 2 pm, Bethel AME Church, $5-25, all ages)

My Friend Chuck
A live podcast episode of My Friend Chuck, the show about friendship, erotica, dinosaurs (sometimes), and much, much more, starring McKenzie Goodwin and two-time Hugo nominee Dr. Chuck Tingle, author of landmark works like Space Raptor Butt Invasion and Breaking the Fourth Butt: Eight Hot-to-Trot Meta Tinglers. (Sun Dec 1, 8 pm, Dante's, $20)

Olympia Provisions 10 Year Anniversary Party
For those who consider themselves to be fans of fine wine, salty meat, and combining the two at meal times, you might be a fan of Olympia Provisions, even if you've never been there before, and tonight's 10th Anniversary party is a good opportunity to finally go. Admission includes "a plethora of delicious food samples" with a full bar available as well. (Sun Dec 1, 4 pm, Olympia Provisions, $13)

Donte Thomas, King Wess
The latest installment of Sunday Sessions at Rontoms doubles as a music video premiere and release party for "Off White," the latest from Portland hip-hop artist Donte Thomas. Fellow rising local rapper King Wess rounds out the proceedings. (Sun Dec 1, 8 pm, Rontoms, free)

The Jackie & Laurie Show
The comedy podcast starring a pair of veterans in a stand-up scene that isn't particularly easy on women comes to Kickstand for a live episode. (Sun Dec 1, 1 pm, Kickstand Comedy Space, $20-25)

DOA Pro Wrestling: Naughty or Nice?
You haven't really done the holidays right if you don't start them by watching Santa himself come off the top rope with swagger and aplomb. Along with Saint Nick bringing the pain, the December DOA show includes the Portland debuts of Logan Stunt, MV Young, and the amazing Effy. (Sun Dec 1, 1 pm, Harvey's Comedy Club, $15-100, all ages)

Classroom Highlights: Coding with Altino Cars

 Cache

We're bring you a new HSTE blog series called "Classroom Highlights"! Each month we'll visit a new school or classroom to bring attention to the amazing teaching and learning that's happening across the state of Hawai'i. This month we're visiting with Deborah Orlik, a HSTE Board member at Hawaii Technology Academy.

I'm always looking for new ways to incorporate technology into my Middle School ELA classroom.  Luckily, I ran into Altino cars last summer in Oahu (on Eventbrite). Oceanit sponsored several workshops for teachers - for free.  Can't beat that!

Altino cars were made by some really smart folks in Korea. They took a cool toy car and imbedded an Arduino microprocessing unit. They added all sorts of sensors, LED lights, sounds, and whatnot.  And then we code that awesome little car using C.  If you are teaching Arduinos, this will be a walk in the C-park for your students.

As the video shows, these 8th graders could not get enough of coding and re-coding and re-trying and trying again. It was everything you would like to see your writing students do:  draft after draft after draft.  Nurturing and harnessing that desire to "make it right" is a life-long journey for a middle school teacher, but the excitement in that class around the Altino cars and the coding was enough energy to light up Honolulu for a week!  So much fun!  Great learning!

If you are interested in finding out more about Altino cars, you can email me at dorlik@myhta.org.  I can share the short story I used to connect the cars to our reading.

Deborah Orlik is a current HSTE Board member. She is also an English and Language Arts teachers at Hawaii Technology Academy.

Academics Are At War Over Racist Roots of ‘Anglo-Saxon’ Studies

 Cache

Academics Are At War Over Racist Roots of ‘Anglo-Saxon’ StudiesUniversal History Archive/GettyIn September 2019, at the 19th biennial meeting of the small, prestigious professional organization called the International Society for Anglo-Saxonists, or ISAS, independent scholar Mary Rambaran-Olm took to the podium and called out the inherent racism of the term “Anglo-Saxon.” She asked ISAS to change its name, and then declared her immediate resignation as a member of the board.Rambaran-Olm’s speech sent shock waves through the world of experts on Anglo-Saxon England—and in the months that have passed since then, colleagues have turned on each other in a heated debated over the use of the term “Anglo-Saxon” and whether it constitutes white supremacy. This debate might seem like an example of typical academic hair splitting with little to no relevance to the general public. But in the case of “Anglo-Saxon,” what might look like academic inside baseball has, in fact, major implications for wider society. This debate cuts to the root of the polarization that we are currently experiencing in the United States and the United Kingdom. What the Alt-Right Gets Wrong About the VikingsThe term “Anglo-Saxon” is the catch-all phrase for the groups of people who, starting in the 5th century CE, migrated from the European continent to what is today England, namely the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes. The term “Anglo-Saxon” can be traced to the Middle Ages, but as medievalist Erik Wade has pointed out, the term was never in widespread use and exists mostly in a few Latin texts. The people who lived during what is known as the Anglo-Saxon Period (410–1066 CE) referred to themselves as either “Englisc” or “Anglecynn.”According to historian Reginald Horsman, the idea of the Anglo-Saxons as the origin of all things English can be traced to the English Reformation in the 16th century. Following the break from Rome and the Catholic Church, the hunt was on for a historical origin for what was to become the Church of England. This origin was found in the church that existed in England before the Norman Conquest in 1066, and which was perceived to be an older and more pure institution. When the term “Anglo-Saxon” came into use in the 16th century, there were no racial overtones to the term; instead focus lay on the institutional lineage of church and a state free from papal influence. But as time went on, the use and meaning of the term changed. Associate Professor of English Francesca Royster points out that during the course of the 16th and 17th centuries, the English language became increasingly racialized as England searched to create a national self-image. Horsman dates the complete transformation of the term “Anglo-Saxon” into a racist term to the 1840s.The Alt-Right Is Taking Over Renaissance FairsBy that decade, the term “Anglo-Saxon” had become the foundation for British imperialism and the American manifest destiny. Building on one another’s work, scholars and scientists had appointed the white race the most prominent of all human races. Among the whites, Caucasians were considered above all other groups, and among the Caucasians, according to these scholars, the Anglo-Saxons reigned supreme. Authors of the Romantic era, such as Sir Walter Scott, served as the bridge between academics and a general population of English-speaking whites susceptible to ideas about their inherent superiority. The term has stayed in the mainstream ever since, fueled by the popularization of the WASP acronym in the writings of sociologist E. Digby Baltzell, and further fictionalized and turned into canon by authors such as the world’s most famous Anglo-Saxonist, J.R.R. Tolkien. The debate over the problems with the term “Anglo-Saxon” is not new. Already in 1976 and again in 1981, Horsman published books and articles on the connection between racism and Anglo-Saxonism. In 2017, medievalist Adam Miyashiro made complaints similar to Rambaran-Olm’s in connection to ISAS’s 18th biennial meeting in Honolulu. The reason why the debate about the term “Anglo-Saxon” has gained so much attention this time around is partly because of the amplification provided by social media; several of the clashes between Anglo-Saxonists have played out in public on Twitter and blogs. But also because Medieval Studies, of which Anglo-Saxon studies is a sub-discipline, are in the throes of a paradigm shift, going from having been mainly white, male, Christian, and Eurocentric to becoming increasingly inclusive and global. In the ongoing debate among Anglo-Saxonists, the old guard and the new, with their respective followers, are duking it out over whether or not we should continue to use problematic words just because we have always used them.By necessity, all historical time periods are creations after the fact. They are defined by historians who identify events in the past that in hindsight have proven to be more significant than others. The years when these events took place become the beginning and the end of an era. The time periods get their names from themes considered to have dominated the arbitrary interval. In the case of the Anglo-Saxon Period, the starting year of A.D. 410 is the year when the Roman Empire pulled out of Britain. The end year of 1066 marks the Battle of Hastings. The time period has gotten its name from the arrival of the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes. And here lies the crux. Because we keep learning new things about the past, time periods and their names sometimes need to be adjusted. For example, the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages is becoming increasingly blurred as new research continues to reveal less of a definitive break following the dissolution of the western part of the Roman Empire. As Rambaran-Olm points out in a recent blog post, the Middle Ages themselves used to be known as the Dark Ages, a derogatory term that historians have relegated to the sidelines and as a result has fallen out of use in the mainstream. As a group, a time period, and the pinnacle of white supremacy the Anglo-Saxons are the creation of scientists and scholars with a racist agenda. As the makers of the Anglo-Saxons, present-day scholars also have the power to unmake them. Small steps have already been taken in this direction. The Anglo-Saxon language is now also known as Early English. The Anglo-Saxon Period is referred to as Early Medieval. In the wake of Rambaran-Olm’s speech and resignation, ISAS has voted to change its name. In other words, the only reason why the Anglo-Saxons still exist is because we let them.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day.
