The giving tradition continues

 Cache
The holiday season is cemented in tradition and the art of giving. Local 4-H groups get in the holiday spirit by keeping one of its traditions alive.

The Festival of Trees will once again take over the interior of the Jasper County Courthouse beginning the day after Thanksgiving until the end of December. Keeping with “The Giving Tree” theme, each of the 14 4-H clubs in Jasper County will decorate their tree to show support for its chosen charity or organization.

Stacey Wilson, Jasper County Youth Coordinator with the ISU Extension & Outreach, has helped organize the event for the past 15 years. She said the festival is one way for the groups to showcase the community service and citizenship activities 4-H members participate in and shows there is more to the club than just showing animals at the fair.

“You don’t have to live on a farm or have livestock to join 4-H. There’s all kinds of projects for people to do including community service and things like that,” Wilson said.

At one time, the festival was held at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax. The trees would be put up on a Friday and have to be taken down by Sunday. In 2006, the festival was moved to the courthouse allowing for the trees to stay up longer and be visible in a prominent building in the county.

“We thought this was more centrally located and was a good place for it,” Wilson said.

With 4-H groups located throughout the county, there are only a handful of activities that bring all the clubs together. Wilson said a lot of the time, the kids involved only get to see each other at the county fair. The Festival of Trees allows each group to have fun and interact with one another.

“They see what each other is doing and next year they might have that idea for their club,” Wilson said.

Not all of the clubs have chosen their organization or charity yet, but Wilson said there were groups who have chosen to help places the Jasper County Animal Rescue League, local food pantries and the cancer unit at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. One of the groups has chosen a more personal cause to champion.

“The Jasper County Council, one of the member’s moms is deployed so they will be checking with her unit to see what they can use and ship over there. We will probably decorate our tree with a patriotic tree,” Wilson said.

Each club will decorate its tree according to the charity or organization they have chosen to champion. Wilson said the clubs used to put items under the tree, but for the past couple years, most groups make a poster board to explain what the club is working to accomplish. However, many groups will still use potential donations as decorations on the tree.

“For example, if they are collecting for under-developed countries, like toothbrushes, they’ll put that on (the tree). A lot of them choose the animal rescue league, especially this year we have several different clubs choosing the animal rescue league to support. They’ll make garland out of dog bones or hang dog toys on the tree and they’ll donate those,” Wilson said.

The Festival of Trees will light up the inside of the Jasper County Courthouse beginning Nov. 29. For more information about the event or the 4-H program, contact the ISU Extension & Outreach office at 641-792-6433.

In celebration of Board Recognition Week, the October 30 workshop meeting opened with the trustees being appreciated for their tireless dedication and advocacy. Board Recognition Week is an annual celebration sponsored by the New York State School Boards Association, which honors the trustees’ commitment to public education. In anticipation of the meeting, Verne W. Select students also handed to each trustee a crafted pumpkin and, under the direction of music teacher Christopher Loeschner, students sang a variety of songs to the pleasure of the trustees and parents attending the meeting. Board of Education President E. Anne Hayes thanked the students for their thoughtfulness and said she believed they were attending the meeting for the Board to thank them. “Every day you come to school and leave school with a smile, you’ve been successful and made us feel good about that,” Ms. Hayes said. “Thank you so much for being who you are.”

Director of STEM Jack Burke, Directory of Elementary Education Amy Brennan and Director of Humanities Jaclyn O’Hagan also contributed to the report which looked at grades 3-8 ELA and math assessment scores, test refusals and demographics for the 2018-2019 school year. The report also gave a glance at science, Regents and Advanced Placement results, as well as the graduation rate among all demographics. Mr. Small noted that test refusal rates continue to be a significant problem, but that the lower the grade the higher the participation. He also said the District is examining how to better tailor instruction and educational strategies so as to be aligned with the Board of Education priorities. Director of Elementary Education Amy Brennan also delivered a report on NWEA assessments and Response to Intervention. NWEA is an adaptive assessment for learning readiness administered to students in grades K-8 in the fall, winter and spring. She also discussed MAP growth, assessments which provide information about the instructional level of a student and a roadmap toward achieving mastery in core subject areas. Ms. Brennan explained that educators will intervene early and collaborate so as to effectively teach all students and explained how South Country teachers reach students through a multi-layered approach to needed intervention. Ms. Brennan noted that although data tells a story, educators must remember that there are students at the center. The next Board of Education meeting will be held on November 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Hello, I know your message is kinda old but could you take a look at my tree? There are some Garlands there from Bowie Co. De kalb. My mother definately remembers meeting a bunch of Garlands and Shavers but she wasn't sure how they were related. My mother is a Dabbs/Lyons/King. Please email me at blaqmorticia@aol.com. Thanks.

Does anyone have any information on how these families are related? I do know that Albert King b. 1859 married a Jennessa Garland b. 1859, in Bowie Co., DeKalb, Texas. Can't figure out the Shavers/Betts connection.

Re: 1860 and prior census records for blacks

My grandfather was Hilbert King married to Henrietta Lyons. Hilberts kids, Lynn, Lawrence, and Janice are still living. I know that Hilbert Kings mother was Gertrude Hill and Henrietta Lyons mothers name was Lovida Dabbs. I was told we were related to the Garlands and the Shavers as well as the Betts. I know that Hilbert Kings grandfather Albert King was married to Jennessa Garland and Jennessa's mother was Ruth Garland (as per the 1900 census showing Ruth living with Jennessa). What I cant figure out is the Shavers and Betts connection. I would absolutely be thrilled if you could find any info on the Dabbs or the Lyons. I know that John Lyons and Lovida Dabbs gave birth to Henrietta around 1912 in Bowie Co. so he had to be around then. ??? I was also told he had siblings named Fred, Paul, May and Ira. My mother Janice King Holmes wanted me to ask you if you knew her and if so what is your name? Thank you again for all your info...I am truely greatful.

Re: George & Caroline Thompson of DeKalb, Bowie Co., TX

 Cache
My family is also a black family. They lived in De Kalb since 1870, and we still have land there today. One of my ancestors a Dona Dabbs born 1881 married an unk. Thompson. They had several children John born 1902, Matt born 1904, Herbert born 1908, and Bernice born 1918. I have not been able to figure out who this this Thompson is because on each census she is listed with the kids only, no husband. My research is on the Dabbs', Lyons', King's, Garland's, and Hill's. All of these surnames have deep roots in De Kalb. Check to see if any names are in your family tree.

Re: George & Caroline Thompson of DeKalb, Bowie Co., TX

Hello, I was reading your post and you mentioned Ms. Ruth and Ms. Zeola. Well I can remember my mother telling me that these two ladies knew all about De Kalb however one of them had recently died. I was wondering if you knew anything about the Dabbs family that lived there since the 1870's and possibly earlier. My Dabbs' were also named George and Caroline "Cattie". I am also related to the Garland's by way of the King family. I have lots of information on the Garlands but I am really interested in the Dabbs family. I have gathered the census records from 1880-1940, but I have no idea who were the slave owners of this family.

Hello there, its been a while since we last spoke but I was wondering how your research was going on the Neighbors family from De Kalb, Texas? My Dabbs family research has gone well but I have hit a brick wall so I have put it down for a while. I'm considering taking on a different family line to research. I was wondering if you have ever heard of the Garland family of Garland, Texas...I am kin to them as well.

A March wedding at the Gladstone Hotel

winter wedding toronto gladstone hotel pink bugundy bride bridesmaids bouquet

These gorgeous images arrived in our inbox recently and immediately brought tears to our eyes. The lovely couple, Meg & Marshall, are just the nicest people ever and the entire day was swimming in emotion as they married. The late March day was blustery to begin with and then turned to snow, but that didn't deter them. The Gladstone Hotel was a perfect downtown Toronto venue, filled with character and fun just like Meg & Marshall. By special request of the couple we made the wedding flowers with entirely local product ( the only import was the greenery which isn't available locally at that time of year) and the rich plums, soft dusty pinks + deep burgundy were perfect together in a mix of ranunculus, cymbidium orchids (yes, local orchids!) and accents such as skimmia. Take a look at these gorgeous images the photographer Frances Morency very kindly shared with us.

EASY CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEAS

In this video, you will find a whole collection of magical Christmas projects that will make your house as festive as possible without spending tons of money. You will find such homemade Christmas decorations as holiday wreaths, simple Christmas trees, cardboard fireplace and ornaments made from different kinds of pasta.
The first Christmas craft is amazing! You can make a cute DIY cardboard box fireplace for your home. You will need several boxes to attach and cover with sticky paper. Add any decorations you like. Enjoy! Let’s make quick star ornament from penne pasta. Simply create a star or star shape using hot glue and decorate with fake pearls of glitter. Or you can even cover it with spray paint. One more cute idea is to make a miniature Christmas tree from bow tie pasta. Also, you can use bow tie pasta to make little Christmas wreath. The tutorial is very easy: using hot glue attach bow tie pasta to the hoop as we show in our video and decorate with beads or anything you like.
We share one more easy tutorial on how to make a Christmas wreath using cardboard, pine cones, cinnamon sticks and any decoration you like. The classical light bulb could be a very versatile item and might be converted into Christmas decoration. Cover a bulb with PVA glue and cover with glitter. After that cover with a layer of hair spray and let dry. We have a super creative idea how to make Ninja Turtle Ornaments. Supplies you need to make cute Ornaments: green ornament balls, ribbon (blue, red, orange, & purple) and toy eyes. Just string glue around the middle of the ornament ball and add ribbon. When the glue is dry add eyes. Ready!

The Pussycat Dolls took to the stage during the X Factor: Celebrity final for their first public performance in a decade. X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger was joined by Ashley Roberts, Kimberly Wyatt, Carmit Bachar and Jessica Sutta for a risque medley of their hits against a backdrop of flames. Smoke guns fired and lasers lit up the stage as they danced to Buttons, When I Grow Up and Don’t Cha, before being joined by a troupe of male back-up dancers. THE MOMENT HAS ARRIVED. After a DECADE apart, the @pussycatdolls featuring our very own @nicolescherzy reunite on the #XFactorCelebrity stage *screams* #XFactorCelebrity #XFactor pic.twitter.com/mw44EjvFDB — The X Factor (@TheXFactor) November 30, 2019 Scherzinger called out to the crowd: “Let me hear you ladies sing.” They performed without Melody Thornton who is sitting out their reunion tour. It came after four celebrity finalists took to the stage in an attempt to win the public vote and secure a recording contract. Professional quizzer on The Chase Jenny Ryan, girl band V5, former Towie star Megan McKenna and identical twins Max and Harvey competed. .@Megan_McKenna_ covers #XFactor royalty with @LeonaLewis' 'One More Sleep' ➡️ https://t.co/7j5PWcQSC3#XFactorCelebrity pic.twitter.com/tJCOILKU93 — The X Factor (@TheXFactor) November 30, 2019 They each performed a Christmas song in an attempt to avoid being the first act eliminated from the live final. Scherzinger was joined by Simon Cowell and Irish music manager Louis Walsh on the judging panel. low dose pills for light people

Realistic Dildo Coming home, a party of excursionists from Chertsey or Isleworth passed us singing and playing music. There were lights in the upper windows of the houses as the people went to bed. From the railway station in the distance came the sound of shunting trains, ringing and rumbling, softened almost into melody by the distance. Realistic Dildo

Now here are my problems, as much as I want a successful relationship, I want to also succeed in other areas of my life. dildo Johnson is a fraud. Always has been. Who believe that it is their right to 'rule' the county and steal from the cookie jar at will. PLEASE do not start with a penis, first off it most likely won even go in unless he using a lot of force and then if it does go in it will hurt worse than anything you have had sexually. Trust me on this I had had a finger up there plenty of times and even small toys but when my partner was using force and finally got in, I felt like I was literally going to be sick. I had to had to lay on the bed for a while before I could even make myself stand up.. dildo

animal dildo There's plenty of burrowing to do in the case of Daphna, whose outsize personality has both its deeply amusing and deeply irritating aspects. Brainy and aggressive and savagely funny, she's also downright hostile and at times cruel, particularly when Liam and Melody (Molly Ranson) arrive from Aspen. She feels it's hers by right: she's the only true believer among the three grandchildren, the lone good Jew of the three. animal dildo

I been posting my practice visualizations on my blog (learning django was a lot of fun!), hence the reckless analysis reference at the bottom of the image. And if you lost the case it wasn a divorce but it just legalized/legitimized adultery for your wife. So you were legally sentenced to be a Cuck I guess. The one case they used as an example, the guy performed but at the end the court determined he didn have a substantial enough "emission" and lost the case.Talk about getting straight fucked by the law.TophShit 16 points submitted 1 day agoThat sounds kinda fair.

animal dildo 7. Pumping: Clit pumping can make your clit more sensitive, and bigger, which can make it easier to stimulate. It can also make you a little less sensitive, so I wouldn't try this unless you are pretty sure you are not so sensitive. As with most vibes of this style, I don't really see how this could be used during intercourse/couple's play. It should definitely not be used anally because of the non boilable material and because of the lack of curve in its shape. I was really looking forward to trying out the Wild G and was impressed by all its functions, but it proved to be just too much for me! More on that later.. animal dildo

dog dildo I'm never going back. It was just me and my parents. Let take a look at your situation:. Because it's expensive here and I usually can't find diet (and don't feel great drinking sugary drinks all day) I've been experimenting with making my own drinks that mimic the taste. I've found that soda water with some grated ginger, fresh lemon, and Splenda is really nice. My sodastream has been working overtime since I quit drinking. dog dildo

dog dildo Paul does sometimes. That fact may leave you feeling asshurt, but that not my concern. I care about hungry people. This toy was great as our first couple's toy. It was fun to use and inexpensive. Although we made the mistake of letting it sit in the sun during a move vibrators, it was easy to store and use on a whim. dog dildo

"Buff my personal exclusive unwilling to change play style." "I don like Specialist." "Black Market sucks." wholesale sex toys But alas it is summer, and I no longer spend 30 minutes (and I am not exageratting, I timed it once) to get him ready to go out. Now, since I get him dressed when he wakes up, I pop on his shoes and we go out in the stroller. About 45 minutes later, we are walking through the daycare doors. wholesale sex toys

dog dildo I think this harness and dildo are great for beginners. Advanced users may find the elastic will stretch with time and not be snug enough. Also you are limited to the size of dildo you can use it with. This series of Real Used Panties is inspired by the same idea: Japanese adult industry researchers have been scouring Japan for local girls willing to sell their own sullied underwear. In each pack you will find a pair of panties with the sexy smell of the young Japanese girl's pussy vibrators, plus photographs of the lady taken while she was wearing the underwear. This set includes panties from Hitomi, no.9 in the series.. dog dildo

animal dildo Another place where honesty is important is discussions of whether treatments and approaches are working. We talk to many users who are in the midst of therapy and finding that the techniques their therapist has them use aren't working. But they don't tell their therapist that it isn't working, but instead, often just ditch therapy or stop participating. animal dildo

horse dildo It much more like dancing with someone. You need to focus on not only your own steps but your partners. If you step on her foot, you mess up the dance and cause some damage. All the speeds sound different, but they are at about the same level of loudness. I think anyone in the same room with you would hear the Saturn, even if you hid under a bunch of covers, but I think that most people would not hear it through a closed door. To be sure, you might want to play music or run an air conditioner.. horse dildo

This way you're able to approach a new partner with a clean slate. And if you do have an infection, you're able to pinpoint when you got it and find out how to not pass it along to your next partner. If you have multiple partners or you're switching partners more frequently than you can be tested, make sure to practice safer sex practices by using a barrier method every single time.

dog dildo Packaging is a thin cardboard box, with a matching tray inside that holds the charging base, Bliss egg, and remote. Underneath the tray is where the power cord, N size battery for the controller, and instructions are housed. I'm keeping the tray for storage, as it holds everything together nicely, but I'm recycling the outer box.. dog dildo

wholesale dildos If this, or any other issues in your relationship, is about that experience vibrators, was that experience any kind of abuse, assault or strong shaming around his body or sex? If so, has he sought out any qualified counseling or other sound support to help him deal with that? If not, that'd be a great thing for you to gently suggest. Sometimes when suggesting that it can also be good to make clear you're not saying someone is broken or in need of fixing, but that it's clear that they could probably benefit from some help dealing and learning some skills and tools to help them best process their experience and manage its impact. You might also add that you could benefit from what they learn in getting help, too.. wholesale dildos

wholesale vibrators Now. I wonder whatever happened to the biodegradable plastic I heard about few years ago. Could they not be used for food product and utensils? I guessing it wasn cheap enough for companies to make the switch when normal plastic are still cheaper to use. wholesale vibrators

The style is great. They are sporty looking and sexy in a sporty sort of way. They are not at all sheer. Amongst my friends, there doesn't seem to be any sex after prom pressure. Actually, I totally forgot about it until recently when I was talking to a friend about our upcoming prom. I was more aware of it when I was in 6th grade watching Beverly Hills 90210 than I am now.

Adult Toys Even if you don't live on campus and eat in dining halls, it is difficult to eat healthy in college. A lot of it has to do with how erratic a college person's schedule can be. Waking up early some days to go to class, going out late, and sleeping late on other days. Adult Toys

dog dildo However, as a self proclaimed kinkster, I personally found the sex to be a bit vanilla and boring for my tastes. Most of the sex scenes are pretty similar, with the focus on oral and vaginal intercourse. There are a few moments where a teeny bit of kink creeps in, but it's so brief that it would almost be better if it wasn't included.. dog dildo

animal dildo Jerking off shouldn't be reserved just for alone time, though. Most people have a well developed set of sensitivities and sexual triggers. Watching your partner pull those triggers for him/herself can provide a valuable framework for how you should proceed. animal dildo

Most Filipino women tend to be well educated but if they are not, these women have the drive to go get educated. People in Philippines place a lot importance towards a college education. Pride in accomplishment at school is instilled in Filipina women from a very young age and female college enrollment is much higher than that that of the men.

There isn't any such substance that can "clean" sperm out of the vagina after the fact. If you're asking about douching, not only is that not such a great thing for vaginal health, it doesn't have the capacity to act as birth control after the fact. As a guy, what you can bring to the table as birth control is a condom..

Every word ever written is a literal statement, clearly I was directly implying that this women death was less important, and of course I violated the cardinal rule of reddit: never comment about anything except the matter directly at hand. Talking about police brutality in my city wasn remotely germane or appropriate and clearly "changing the subject" on an internet forum is disrespectful to the dead. dildos

It leaves microscopic gaps that the PTFE fill to make it sharper and have less drag. Way overkill for a knife to be that sharp, but it demonstrates it. I throw them out when they still the sharper than a new box cutter blade. I also agree that a Christian who does not love someone for any reason is not acting or loving as Jesus instructed them to love. Loving however does not always mean agreeing. Many loving Christians lovingly adhere the texts in the Bible in regards to homosexuality and other sins.

vibrators With the Hitachi massaging away at the clitoris and your partner unable to do anything about it they could find themselves in ecstasy and pleasure. Unable to control their own stimulation, they could end up having a stimulating orgasm (hence the name of the belt). Singles can use the belt too, by just placing themselves in the belt and letting the Hitachi Magic Wand go to work on them while they use their hands for other stimulation. vibrators

That doesn't mean they aren't coping tools for some people. I using 3M sticky mount thingies (technical term, I swear) for all of it on the wall. dog dildo Its biggest flaw was the villain. Even though they approached him from a unique angle, his motivations were still almost identical to Nero and Khan Revenge against Starfleet. But everything else was spot on as far as a "five year mission" story. Baln Prisma Tropical What turned my head when I first heard this album was how the rhythms feel organic yet are produced by digital instruments, paired with clever songwriting and lush sonic landscapes. HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas (November 25, 2019) – Radius Aerospace, formerly a Triumph Group Division, with its newly established corporate headquarters in Hot Springs, Arkansas, celebrated its Hot Springs’ Division titanium components plant expansion with a ribbon cutting ceremony today. The company plans to hire 65 new employees to support this expansion.

“For more than six months, Arkansas Economic Development Commission has worked closely with Radius Aerospace and regional economic development officials to prepare for this announcement,” Governor Asa Hutchinson said. “The strength of our workforce makes Hot Springs an excellent choice for this expansion.”

The company produces complex fabricated metallic assemblies and components used in the military, commercial, business jet, regional jet, general aviation and helicopter markets. Hot Springs’ diversified product list includes aircraft skins, leading edges, doors, covers and ribs.
?
“We’re excited to expand and modernize our Hot Springs site with this state-of-the-art facility,” said Radius Aerospace Vice President of Supply Chain Darren Hill. “The quality of work our fine employees produce has enabled us to grow and continue to support both the aerospace and defense industry, which is so important to our nation. This expansion is further evidence of our commitment to continued growth and placing a high emphasis on being a good corporate neighbor to our community and stakeholders”

The Hot Springs facility is a technology leader of Super Plastic Forming of Titanium and has seen a significant increase in demand in both the commercial and military aerospace industry for custom configured titanium components. The facility currently employs 385.

“It is with great pleasure that the City of Hot Springs congratulates Radius Aerospace on their expansion and new development plans. Their investment in technology and additional jobs in our community is greatly appreciated, and we wish them much success now and into the future,” said City Manager Bill Burrough.

Mayor Pat McCabe added, “Only through sound business decisions of the past can a company such as Radius Aerospace take advantage of present-day opportunities. Economic growth through business expansion is vital to the area, and this next step by Radius Aerospace is a sign of a bright future for them and our community. The City of Hot Springs congratulates Radius on their expansion and investment in the core of Hot Springs.”

Officials said the expansion project is one of the largest to take place in Hot Springs and Garland County in several years.

“Although new in name, Radius Aerospace has roots in our community dating back to the 1960s as Triumph Group, and we are extremely pleased to see this growth and expansion on their part,” said Hot Springs Metro Partnership President and CEO Gary Troutman. “It is a wonderful harbinger for future continued growth in our community.”

Garland County Judge Darryl Mahoney said, “We congratulate Radius Aerospace on their continued growth and development in our vibrant community. Also, we appreciate their commitment to provide jobs and state-of-the-art technology investment for the future.”

According to the Arkansas Department of Education, “The Arkansas School Recognition Program, Ark. Code Ann. § 6-15-2107, was created to provide financial awards to public schools that achieve high student performance, student academic growth, and for secondary schools, high school graduation rate.”

The statute authorizes rewards in an amount up to $100 per student for Top 5% and up to $50 per student for the Top 6-10%.

Schools receiving recognition funds must establish a committee to determine the best use of the funds. The committee includes the principal, a teacher elected by the faculty, and a parent representative selected by the local parent teacher organization or another parental involvement group. Schools may use the funds for faculty and staff bonuses, educational equipment and materials, or personnel to assist with improving or maintaining student performance and growth.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Chamber Endorses Lakeside Millage Campaign

(Hot Springs, AR)  May 7, 2018 – The Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors endorses and supports Lakeside School District’s proposed millage increase.

The board voted to approve the endorsement during its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 26, after listening to a presentation by Lakeside Superintendent Shawn Cook on the proposed millage increase.

The school district will hold a special election for a 4-mill increase on May 22. Early voting began on Monday, May 7. The increase titled “Kids First” will fund a new building and renovations construction project that is necessary to accommodate the growing population of students in the district.

“Our children are our future and it’s vitally important we invest in their long-term success,” said Gary Troutman, President and CEO of the Chamber. “Shawn Cook made a compelling presentation to our Chamber board of directors on his vision for his school district, and they voted unanimously to support Lakeside’s proposed millage increase.”

Lakeside has grown by more than 1,000 students since 2004 and with the district’s emphasis on academics, Cook said they only expect that growth to continue.

If the millage increase passes, Lakeside will build a Junior High School (7th-8th grade), new Primary and Intermediate cafeterias and safety entrances, a Performing Arts Center, add additional turf fields for practice and play, and add parking, sidewalks and roads to accommodate the project.

Currently Lakeside has the second lowest millage in Garland County at 37.70, Cook said. If approved the millage would raise to 41.70, which would make it the third highest among school districts in Garland County.

Cook said based on a $100,000 home, it would cost $0.22 per day, $6.67 per month and $80 a year.

Lakeside Primary and Lakeside Intermediate schools were both recognized by the state and given an “A” grade by the Arkansas Department of Education’s Performance Report cards, and both of those schools will receive rewards based on their performance on the 2017 ACT Aspire exams.

Chamber Celebrates 100th Business to Open in Downtown Hot Springs since the 2014 Majestic Hotel Fire

(Hot Springs, AR)  May 3, 2018 – On Thursday, the Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce celebrated the 100th new business to open in downtown Hot Springs since the 2014 Majestic Hotel fire with a special ribbon cutting at Vault, the highly anticipated new downtown restaurant.

“One hundred new businesses opening in four years is an incredible milestone. It’s real proof of a very strong economy in downtown Hot Springs,” said Cole McCaskill, Vice President of Economic Development with the Hot Springs Metro Partnership.

“Even more impressive is that of the 100 new businesses, 90 of them are still open and 66 of them were net-new additions to downtown, meaning they occupied and opened in a retail space that was previously vacant as opposed to replacing a recently closed business.”

Cole McCaskill, Vice President of Economic Development with the Hot Springs Metro Partnership, second left, speaks as U.S. Senator John Boozman, left, Congressman Bruce Westerman, and Gary Troutman, President and CEO of the Hot Springs Metro Partnership and Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce look on.

In addition to 100 new businesses since the fire, Downtown Hot Springs has seen 82 commercial property sales and more than $80 million in investment. The Majestic Hotel was one of Hot Springs’ oldest structures. It unfortunately that became dormant and fell into disrepair before catching fire in February 2014.

The loss of one of Hot Springs’ historic and iconic buildings mobilized city and business leaders into action to revitalize and preserve the downtown area. Downtown Hot Springs, “America’s First Resort,” is famous nationwide for its history and culture. It is important to the people of Hot Springs to see this area flourish.

In the weeks following the fire, civic groups formed the “Downtown Game Plan Task Force” comprised of community leaders and downtown stakeholders that sought to prevent future tragedies like the fire and to improve the course of downtown which had suffered from a lack of investment for several decades.

That group met publicly and privately for four months and ultimately released a set of recommendations for the progress of downtown. The HSMP adopted those recommendations as a strategy and hired McCaskill as downtown development director in June 2014.

Each year since the fire, downtown has experienced subsequent rising investment levels.

In 2015, downtown saw the nearly year-long master planning process from ideation to completion with the facilitation by Thomas P. Miller and Associates from Indianapolis.

That strategic planning process sought input from downtown business owners, Garland County residents and visitors for what they’d like to see in downtown. The Downtown Redevelopment Guide was published and its goals and strategies were adopted to provide a framework for growth and development for downtown by the City of Hot Springs and the HSMP.

The Chamber and HSMP look forward to future growth and expansion in the downtown area.

Hutton Settlement holds annual Christmas tree farm fundraiser

 Cache
They're best known for kicking off the holiday season and for the presents underneath them, but at the Hutton Settlement, Christmas trees take on a whole new meaning -- because every tree sold at its farm doubles as a donation to kids in need.

The children's home has taken in children for the last 100 years. Over the years, those kids have felt the impact of addiction, abuse and neglect but now, they're looking to make an impact of their own. They say they can't do it without those donations.

"I kind of just want to give back to Hutton because they provided 10 years of experiences for me, helped me grow into the person I am today," said Trevor McArthur, a Hutton alumni who now serves as the home's Christmas tree farm manager. "Growing up at Hutton was great because there's so many different staff and kids that are willing to accept you and accept you as family even though you're not blood-related. Because family is what you make it."

As their parents struggled with addiction and illness, McArthur found a new kind family -- and themselves -- at Hutton, alongside Roxy Frederickson.

"My mom was a drug addict. My dad was dealing with heroin," Frederickson said. "It has beat them down so hard and I just don't want that for me and I don't want to go down that path of addiction... And I don't want that -- if I ever have kids -- I don't want that for my kids, either."

Like McArthur, she's setting out to make sure that doesn't happen by immersing herself in Hutton, in its leadership and recreation programs, and its tree farm -- where every tree serves as a donation to grow those programs.

"Hutton is different than a lot of family settings but it is a good place and a good alternative for kids who don't have that," Frederickson said. "I'm just so thankful to be living here."

McArthur and Frederickson will be helping families on the farm until Dec. 15 or when they run out of trees -- whichever comes first. Trees start at $30 and will be sold alongside garland, poinsettias and wreaths every day of the week. The farm is open Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

 Cache

Who is Worse: Donald Trump or Mitch McConnell?

He’s maybe the most dangerous politician of my lifetime. He’s helped transform the Republican Party into a cult, worshiping at the altar of authoritarianism. He’s damaged our country in ways that may take a generation to undo. The politician I’m talking about, of course, is Mitch McConnell.

Two goals for November 3, 2020: The first and most obvious is to get the worst president in history out of the White House. That’s necessary but not sufficient. We also have to flip the Senate and remove the worst Senate Majority Leader in history.

Like Trump, Mitch McConnell is no garden-variety bad public official. McConnell puts party above America, and Trump above party. Even if Trump is gone, if the Senate remains in Republican hands and McConnell is reelected, America loses because McConnell will still have a chokehold on our democracy.

This is the man who refused for almost a year to allow the Senate to consider President Obama’s moderate Supreme Court pick, Merrick Garland.

And then, when Trump became president, this is the man who got rid of the age-old Senate rule requiring 60 Senators to agree on a Supreme Court nomination so he could ram through not one but two Supreme Court justices, including one with a likely history of sexual assault.

This is the man who rushed through the Senate, without a single hearing, a $2 trillion tax cut for big corporations and wealthy Americans – a tax cut that raised the government debt by almost the same amount, generated no new investment, failed to raise wages, but gave the stock market a temporary sugar high because most corporations used the tax savings to buy back their own shares of stock.

McConnell refuses to support what’s needed for comprehensive election security – although both the U.S. intelligence community and Special Prosecutor Mueller say Moscow is continuing to hack into our voting machines and to weaponize disinformation through social media.

McConnell has earned the nickname “Moscow Mitch” because he’s doing exactly what Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump want him to do – leave America vulnerable to another Putin-supported victory for Trump.

McConnell is also blocking bipartisan background-check legislation for gun sales, even after the mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, El Paso and Odessa, Texas.

So even if Trump is out of the White House, if McConnell remains Senate Majority Leader he will not allow a Democratic president to govern.

He won’t allow debate or votes on Medicare for All, universal pre-K, a wealth tax, student loan forgiveness, or the Green New Deal. He won’t allow confirmation votes on judges nominated by a Democratic president.

The good news is McConnell is the least popular senator in the country with his own constituents. He’s repeatedly sacrificed Kentucky to Trump’s agenda – for example, agreeing to Trump’s so-called emergency funding for a border wall, which would take $63 million away from projects like a new middle school on the border between Kentucky and Tennessee.

McConnell is even cut funding for black lung disease suffered by Kentucky coal miners. I know from my years as labor secretary that coal mining is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, and the number of cases of incurable black lung disease has been on the rise. But when a group of miners took a 10-hour bus ride to Washington this past summer to ask McConnell to restore the funding, McConnell met with them for one minute and then refused to help them. No wonder Democrats are lining up in Kentucky to run against Moscow Mitch in 2020.

The not-so-good news is that McConnell is up for re-election the same day as Donald Trump, and Trump did well in Kentucky in 2016. Which means we have to help organize Kentucky, just as we have to organize other states that may not be swing states in the presidential election but could take back the Senate.

Consider Georgia: Republican Senator Johnny Isakson is retiring, meaning both of Georgia’s Senate seats are now up for grabs. And this one extra seat—in a state that is trending blue—could be the tipping point that allows Democrats to win enough seats to end GOP control of the Senate.

Trump has to go, but so does McConnell.

Here’s what you can do: Wherever you are in the country, you can donate to McConnell’s challengers. If you live in or near Kentucky, you can get out and knock doors or make calls. Or if you have friends or family in the state, encourage them to get involved.

As to the question of who is worse, Trump or McConnell — the answer is that it’s too close to call. The two of them have degraded and corrupted American democracy. We need them both out.

Fünf ausverkaufte Konzertwochen in Swinging London! China beckons...gingerly!

Roscoea humeana
I have been lucky enough in my lifetime to find myriad Roscoeas in bloom on Gangheba pass in Yunnan on three different occasions. The first time, in May 22 years ago they were just barely out of the ground like this.

Roscoea humeana
I believe that's a spider lurking in the mouth of this one...

Roscoea cauthleioides
This year most were up a bit higher like this one--last year the season was much further along (although earlier on the calendar!) and the Roscoea were all quite tall...

Roscoea schneideriana
At first I thought this was another R. humeana, but I've been convinced it's this less known species...the color variation was astonishing at this site...

Green wall along street in Chengdu
So exciting to see long living walls filled with maidenhair ferns and other choice plants along the large thoroughfares of this, one of the largest cities in the world!

And looking out from my hotel room in Chengdu--an ambitious intensive green roof enticingly close!
Those are real flowers!
In a Naxi village near Lijiang, the villagers greeted us with gorgeous garlands--I'll spare you the shots of us fellows wearing them however!
Jade Dragon mountains from Rock's village
The majesty of the Chinese snow ranges has to be seen to be believed!

Lavish banquet every night
And every meal was different and tremendously varied and always delicious!

Stellera chamaejasme in Yunnan
A typical view of the masses of choice flowers one finds, even near villages where overgrazing can encourage the growth of some plants, like this spectacular (poisonous) daphne relative.

Rhododendron rupicolum v. chryseum on Baimashan
And a parting shot--at over 14,000' on Baima Shan Pass near Shangrila: those are yellow flowered rhododendrons growing on limestone substrate--an upcoming issue of the North American Rock Garden Society's Quarterly bulletin will show many more fantastic plants we found near that valley cleft...

This coming summer I'm planning a return to China--only to new very rich pastures in Sichuan. Harry Jans and our fantastic tour organizer in China (Carolyn Gao) have planned an itinerary that will feature some of the greatest botanical hot spots of the Himalayas. The price is fair, and those who've already signed up are some of the greatest plant lovers I know: why not give yourself the Christmas gift of a lifetime and join us? Subramanian Swamy: Collapsing Economy Will Eclipse Ayodhya Gains For BJP

 Cache
BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy interacts with members of the media at Parliament House in New Delhi on December 17, 2015.

In an interview with HuffPost India, Rajya Sabha lawmaker Subramanian Swamy said the poor state of India’s economy would offset the boost which the Ayodhya verdict has given the ruling-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leader,

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, under whose term the longest-running land dispute between Hindus and Muslims ended in victory for the Hindu parties.

Swamy, who is known to publicly rebuke his own party, the BJP, and the Narendra Modi government,  completed his PhD in economics from Harvard University, where he was guided by two Nobel laureates Simon Kuznets and Paul Samuelson. He also taught economics at Harvard.

The former Janata Party leader, who has served as a Union Minister under the Chandra Shekhar and Narasimha Rao governments, called out the Modi government on the economy not long after it first came to power in 2014, slamming moves like demonetisation and the Goods and Services Tax

The 80-year-old lawmaker, who recently authored Reset: Regaining India’s Economic Legacy, believes the economic situation is so bad that it would cost the BJP the Jharkhand and Delhi Assembly elections.

“Unemployment will supersede every other thing including the Ram Mandir,” he said. “But Modi doesn’t listen. He listens to people who do not tell him the truth.”

Unemployment will supersede every other thing including the Ram Mandir.

Edited excerpts:

A political science professor from Lucknow University that I spoke with said the Ayodhya verdict is “everything for the BJP.” What do you think it means for the BJP? Votes?

Votes, yes. The first principle of votes is that the voter must be mobilised. It is the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and the VHP (Vishva Hindu Parishadworkers that get the votes out. The BJP is now guaranteed an election machinery in a revitalised form for the elections. All they have to do is make speeches.

The general election is still four years away. Public memory fades pretty quickly.

I will say that people are unhappy with the economic performance and think it’s not being taken seriously. We cannot see much tangible gains in the proportion of the time that Modi spends abroad in terms of results. This economy will have to be set right. Corruption has become a big issue in Jharkhand and this is going to affect us. The most honest and prominent senior minister Saryu Rai has been denied a ticket. The public does not understand this. If your plank is fighting corruption then you should be rewarding him, not penalising him. You might see us losing in Jharkhand and in Delhi. I don’t think the Ram wave will wipe that out. The worker will not be tomtoming it.

The advantage of the Ayodhya verdict to the BJP will be offset by the poor economy?

Yes, because we are now getting into the serious business of building the temple. So, there is no time for getting out on the streets, putting garlands, distributing sweets, organising rallies. The economy is the main thing. If you perform very well economically, it is not necessary you will win. Why? Well, Narasimha Rao was an example. Even (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee was an example. All the party workers sat at home and said ― okay, you have your “India Shining,” but you have done nothing for the Ram Janmabhoomi, we are sitting at home. But if the economy is so bad that a guy doesn’t know how to pay his child’s school fees or whether his bank is going to collapse. We have reached that stage of the economy. We are on the verge of a collapse. Some miracle can change that. Good policies could change that. But I don’t see any good policies coming. I’m saying it’s very hard, I’m not saying impossible, to reverse defeat in Delhi and Jharkhand ( Assembly elections). We have some time to fix Delhi if we put a good chief minister’s candidate. If the present governor of Assam (Jagdish Mukhi) is brought in as the chief ministerial candidate then we will win for sure.

You might see us losing in Jharkhand and in Delhi. I don’t think the Ram wave will wipe that out.

To be clear, you are saying the advantage of the Ayodhya verdict would be offset by the poor state of the economy.

It would be offset by the economy if it comes to mass unemployment. The consequence of banks folding up, the consequence of cutting down of shifts in a factory, all these will lead to layoffs. Lay-offs is unemployment. Unemployment will supersede every other thing including the Ram Mandir.

You believe the BJP will see the fallout of the poor economy in Jharkhand and Delhi Assembly elections?

Yes.

When we spoke in May, you said that you wanted to be Finance Minister in the next government.

Yes.

You are publicly critical of your own party and PM Modi. Don’t you have to play the political game to get the position?

No. It’s not the political game. I believe the party committed in the 2014 election to three things: furthering Hindutva, fighting corruption, and developmental economics. There is no vikas taking place. I’ve been writing this since 2015, not now. We are heading for a tailspin and soon a crash. But Modi doesn’t listen. He listens to people who do not tell him the truth. All the people that he has given high positions to do not tell him the truth.

We are heading for a tailspin and soon a crash. But Modi doesn’t listen.

It’s probably you saying these things that makes it hard for the PM to make you FM?

I should have been made in 2014. I wasn’t saying these things in 2014. Now, he doesn’t want me. He doesn’t want any minister to talk back to him, let alone in public, but in private cabinet meetings too. Which are the ministers that talk to him? I’m built this way. I had no problem working with Chandra Shekhar. I had no problem working with Narasimha Rao. I had no problem working with Morarji Desai, I had no problem working with Rajiv Gandhi and building a coalition government (Swamy is believed to have been instrumental in getting Rajiv Gandhi to support Chandra Shekhar for PM).

He doesn’t want any minister to talk back to him, let alone in public, but in private cabinet meetings too.

What do you think of Nirmala Sitharaman as Finance Minister?

Same problem. She does not know any economics. If you see the press conferences, she is handing the mic to civil servants to answer.  What is the problem in the country today? Poor demand. Supply is not the problem. But what did she do? She relaxes taxes for corporates. Corporates are flushed with supply. They will just use it to write off their debts. That is what they have done. There is no improvement. You should abolish income tax instead so people can go out and spend. People cannot buy biscuits. Go and speak to Britannia

Three ways for getting the economy on the road to recovery.

First way is to bring some cheer into the middle class. Abolish income tax. There is depression and pessimism in the middle class and they are a very powerful part… they have influence even through word of mouth. You will see dancing on the streets if that happens.  Second, say that small and medium-sized industries will not have to pay more than 6% interest rates on loans. At the same time, fixed deposit rates for savings should be raised to 9% from the present 6% of the rate of interest for taking loans. Third is that you print notes and start a massive public works program like roads, turnpikes, houses, that sort of thing.

First way is to bring some cheer into the middle class.

In your book, you write that BJP should give an alternative ideological thrust to economic policy. What do you mean?

Our society was structured on the principle that the most learned and the least wealthy person should be called a Brahmin. Gyani and tyagi as they say. If you keep talking about profit maximisation, then you are back to the same one dimensional society of the United States and the western world. I would like everyone to be persuaded that money beyond their comfortable normal life should be given to philanthropy. Only then will we give you any status. But here it’s all become greed. Look at the money being spent on weddings. It’s absurd. People want to show off — my wedding was better than my neighbours. It’s in an appendix chapter where I’ve called it integral humanism.

The small and medium-sized industries should be given the maximum assistance to stand on their feet. Low interest rates. Today, the internet rates are 14% to 15%. It’s cruel. They have already crumbled. Similarly, corporates should be told that if you build schools, hospitals, pay for the tuition of your employees children, they will be given tax exemptions. We should move away from government fixing goals to incentives. The market should function in a framework where no one can wipe others out. We should not let monopolies to develop through competition.

Look at the money being spent on weddings. It’s absurd.

In the book, you write the PM relies on friends and ministers who do not tell him the truth about the economy. Why don’t they tell him?

Because he will sack them.

Have you tried telling him?

Why should I advise him when he is not ready to listen. The best thing I do is write a letter. I’ve not asked for an appointment from him for the past three and a half years.

You said the economy is on the verge of collapse. Why do you say that?

A trigger mechanism exists in every economy, and it takes just two banks to collapse, and many of them are on the verge of collapse. Someone recently asked me is my money safe in the bank? Many people ask me this question. It’s all subjective. Now, what if everyone goes to the banks and says give me my money. The bank can’t. Every time the bank takes one rupee, they lend out eight. They create eight new accounts of one rupee each. They collapse. That’s called a run on the bank. I can’t predict when that will happen.

The other thing that worries me is that everything is negative, but the stock market is going up. So, what’s happening? People are either bringing money from abroad through that corrupt mechanism called participatory notes, or they are not putting their money in the bank and in fixed deposits. They have been cheated in ponzi schemes, so they are putting in the stock market. The stock market is flushed with funds but the country is not.  Find out what the shortfall in GST is. GST is another crazy scheme which should never have been brought. The paperwork involved is unbelievable.

The other thing that worries me is that everything is negative, but the stock market is going up.

The economy is suffering, but the government is also trying to conceal it. Journalist Somesh Jha of The Business Standard, for instance, reported that the government has tried to suppress data which showed that the unemployment figures were at an all time low.

This is not Modi doing it. It started with (Arun) Jaitely. I’ve mentioned ‘spin’ several times in my book. All spin.

Another report says consumer spending has fallen to its lowest in the last four decades. Why is the government not making this public.

Why not? When they think spin is all that works and media people comply. How many of you media people have called me to debate with a government spokesperson. By the way, my rebellion is a sign that BJP is a democratic party. Nobody in the Congress can do it. Why don’t you send me a copy of both reports. I’ll add a covering note and send them to the PM and ask are you aware of this.

The issue is suppression of data…

But the prime minister knows nothing about it. He is told wonderful growth rate. Do you know what the real growth rate today is? They are saying that it is coming down to 4.8%. I’m saying it is 1.5%. I’m an expert on index number theory, which is all about the prices on which you should calculate GDP.

Are we calculating the GDP correctly?

No. Are we calculating the index numbers correctly? No. Why? Either we are ignorant or it makes us happy to see better figures. This atmospherics problem is what is hitting.

This atmospherics problem is what is hitting.

How should we be calculating the GDP?

It’s a technical subject. When we took over the financial base year was 2003-2004. At present, it is  2011-12. If you bring it up and start evaluating at 2017-18 prices, without your doing any work, your growth rate will also go up, but so will also the pre-2011 data. But that you don’t publish.

No, you say this year the growth rate is 7%. If you calculate at current prices, you can get it higher again. Prime Minister said $5 trillion by 2024. That means doubling in five years. Which means what growth rate? 14.4%.  Are you growing at 14.4%? And today, if you are going to go from your present target of $2.7 trillion to 5 trillion, you are at 18% growth rate. All these numbers are known to people, they are known to our economists also, but they are under pressure to produce pleasing data.

What did you think of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman blaming millennials not buying cars for the slump in the auto industry?

It’s like a Tale of Two Cities reworked.

But the Maruti chairman RC Bhargava said she had a point.

He can say anything. It was a stupid thing for her to say. They must think people to be idiots that they would accept such a thing. All kinds of crazy things are being said.

Ciara hosts this years American Music Awards, and Judy Garland stars in the beloved period musical Meet Me in St. Louis.
