You'll hear all the classic tunes such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and "Here Comes Santa Claus" to “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”, and “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” to the TIMA chorus singing "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch."

This year our lineup features Keith Gay as master of ceremonies; entertainer Gary Strickland, singer-songwriters Tom Cooler and Monty Parks, the return of the Tybee Island Maritime Academy Chorus, and Tybee’s acapella singing group, Island Harmony.

Audience members are encouraged to sing along with the medley of Christmas carols, a new feature this year. Santa Claus is expected to make an appearance, too!

This year’s show is produced by Christopher Chandler, director of Piano Studies at Savannah Arts Academy.

Rams at Cardinals: 5 key matchups to watch on Sunday
Cameron DaSilva

The Arizona Cardinals may only be 3-7-1, but they’re a far better team than their record indicates. They nearly upset the 10-1 49ers twice in the last month and Kyler Murray is finding his footing under center.

Sunday’s game won’t be an easy one for the Los Angeles Rams, especially when analyzing the individual matchups that are set to take place on the field.

Here are the five most important matchups for the Rams against the Cardinals.

With Thanksgiving happening on Thursday, there's a very short list of meetings this week.
  • On Monday, November 25, the Common Council Fire Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. and the Police Committee meets at 6:00 p.m. Both meetings take place in City Hall. The police union contract may come up at the Police Committee meeting, but it's not likely. The City's collective bargaining attorney is expected to present the amendments to the police contract to the Common Council in a special meeting on Monday, December 9. That presentation will probably take place in executive session.
  • On Tuesday, November 26, the Hudson Development Corporation meets at noon at 1 North Front Street. So far, no agenda for the meeting is available.
  • The calendar on the City of Hudson website lists a tentative meeting of the DRI Committee for Tuesday, November 26, at 2:30 p.m., at City Hall. That meeting is not likely to happen. At the last meeting of the committee, it was decided that the next meeting would take place on Tuesday, December 10.
  • At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, the Tourism Board meets at 1 North Front Street. At its informal meeting on November 12, the Common Council tabled the Tourism Board's request to spend $2,000 of its budget to bring Steve Chandler of Chandlerthinks to Hudson to make a presentation to the Council. At the meeting, it was also observed that there would be an entirely new Tourism Board at the beginning of the new year.
Update: Gossips has received word that the Tourism Board meeting has been canceled.
  • On Wednesday, November 27, Thanksgiving Eve, the Common Council Legal Committee is scheduled to meet at 6:15 p.m.
Update: Gossips has just received word that the Legal Committee meeting has been canceled.

Ear to the Ground

 Cache
In an article that appeared in the Register-Star on November 7, two days after the general election, mayor-elect Kamal Johnson is reported to have said that "his first move when taking office will be making appointments to boards and committees, and ensuring the qualified people are serving in the right positions." A diligent observer of Hudson's boards and commissions, Gossips was curious to know what appointments he might make.

So far, in appointments that don't have to do with boards and committees, Johnson has chosen Michael Chameides to be his mayor's aide. This raises a question of propriety, since Chameides holds the office of Third Ward supervisor. Can someone hold two jobs in government--one elected and one appointed? It seems there is nothing in the charter to prohibit it, but this may be, like the proposal for a self storage facility on Fairview Avenue, something the charter never anticipated. The role of mayor's aide didn't exist until 2000, when being mayor was considered a part-time job (with an annual compensation of about $11,000) and Mayor Ken Cranna wanted someone in the mayor's office to answer the phone while he pursued his regular job of being a lawyer.

Gossips has also heard that Cheryl Roberts will be appointed city attorney. Roberts has been counsel to the City before, first as the attorney to the Common Council when Dick Tracy was mayor (2006-2007), then as city attorney during the Rick Scalera's final two terms as mayor (2008-2011) and during Bill Hallenbeck's administration. Roberts lives in Columbia County, so she's not the reason the residency requirement for attorneys had to be expanded to allow attorneys to live within a 50 mile radius of Hudson. The word is that Roberts will not serve as counsel to any of the regulatory boards, so perhaps whomever the new administration has in mind to be counsel to the Planning Board, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Historic Preservation Commission lives farther afield.

Regarding the appointments to boards and committees, the only committees are Common Council committees, and president of the Common Council makes those appointments, so it's likely the term committees was used in the article when what was meant was commissions.

Expressing his annoyance at being denied site plan approval for his makeshift self storage facility, Carmine Pierro intimated he had knowledge that Walter Chatham would not be reappointed as chair of the Planning Board. The mayor appoints the chairs of the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals, so Johnson could appoint someone else as chair, but Chatham's term on the Planning Board does not end until December 31, 2021, and he can continue on the Planning Board until that time. There are three members of the Planning Board, however, whose terms expire at the end of this year: Ginna Moore, Clark Wieman, and Toni Koweek, who was only recently appointed to the Planning Board to finish out Mark Morgan-Perez's term. Johnson can make three new appointments to the Planning Board.

On the Zoning Board of Appeals, there will be two vacancies to be filled. The terms of Kathy Harter and Theresa Joyner are up at the end of the year. Both women have served on the ZBA for more than one term. Johnson could reappoint them or replace them. Also he can replace Lisa Kenneally as chair of the ZBA, a position she has held through several administrations. Kenneally's current term on the ZBA doesn't end until December 31, 2020.

On the Historic Preservation Commission, no one's term will expire this year, so Johnson will have no new appointments to make to this commission--at least not this year. Unlike the Planning Board and the ZBA, the HPC selects its own chair.

The mayor also appoints people to serve on the Hudson Housing Authority Board of Commissioners. Of the seven member board, two members are elected by the residents of Bliss Towers, and the remaining five are appointed by the mayor. There was one vacancy on the board, and now, after the recent resignations of Alan Weaver and Peggy Polenberg, there are three. Two of the vacancies may be filled by Mayor Rick Rector before the end of his term, leaving one to be filled by Johnson.

Then there's the Tourism Board. The law that created the Tourism Board very carefully defines the composition of the board: the chair is to be the chair of the Common Council Economic Development Committee; four members of the board are appointed by the Common Council; four members are appointed by the mayor. What the law doesn't define is the term of those serving on the Tourism Board, so it is assumed that the makeup of the board can completely change every two years. It appears that is what is going to happen.

At the informal meeting of the Common Council on November 12, a resolution authorizing the Tourism Board to spend $2,000 of its budget to bring Steve Chandler of Chandlerthinks to Hudson to make a presentation to the Council was tabled. This action seems to have been taken in anticipation of a "whole new Tourism Board," which very likely may want to interpret the task assigned to them in a different way, rejecting the work done over the past two years by the current Tourism Board.

Knives Out does what so many of the best mysteries do: Carve up the rich

 Cache

For his wildly entertaining new murder-mystery movie Knives Out, writer-director Rian Johnson has lined up an all-star cast, nearly every one of whom is playing a fabulously wealthy creep. Don Johnson plays the philandering spouse of a snippy real estate mogul, played by Jamie Lee Curtis. Chris Evans is their stubbornly unserious playboy son. Michael Shannon plays his millionaire father's staunchly right-wing business manager, raising a teenage son who's a Neo-Nazi internet troll. And Toni Collette is a self-styled social media influencer, burning through her late husband's family fortune.

Most of these characters are — whether they realize it or not — moochers. The clan's patriarch is the mega-successful mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey, played by Christopher Plummer. When he dies under mysterious circumstances, a shrewd southern dandy detective named Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) scrutinizes the potential suspects one-by-one. And one-by-one, he reveals that even if they didn't actually kill Harlan, they've spent most of their lives bleeding him dry ... and then congratulating themselves for being self-made millionaires.

This premise may seem like an aggressively woke spin on a classic genre. And I haven't even mentioned Harlan's beloved nurse: an undocumented immigrant's daughter named Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), who helps steer Benoit's investigation, even as her late employer's family belittles and marginalizes her. (One running joke is that no Thrombey can remember her nationality; it's all pretty much "somewhere brown-skinned people come from" to them.)

But while Johnson definitely intends Knives Out to be a commentary on the political and class divisions of 2019, he's not breaking new ground here. The detective/mystery genre has long been fairly radical. In Raymond Chandler's novels, some swell walks through Philip Marlowe's door, and before long the P.I.is bouncing between elegant mansions and sordid dens of iniquity, sniffing out the scandals that the rich and famous would rather he bury. Distrusting the upper-class isn't just a recurring theme in these stories; it's a plot-driver.

Knives Out isn't inspired by the noir shadings of Chandler so much as it is by '70s TV detective shows and Agatha Christie's drawing-room mysteries. But all of these largely share Chandler's nuanced understanding of how people too often conflate having a lot of money with cultural superiority.

On the surface, Knives Out is very much like one of the star-studded old movie adaptations of Christie novels like Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express — the kind of films where the posters featured all the actors' faces in tiny boxes. Much of the fun of the movie comes from watching skilled pros like Collette, Curtis, Johnson, and Shannon lean into playing such broadly malevolent, fiercely selfish, unselfconsciously smug plutocrats. Evans and Craig especially look to be having a ball, loosed from the demands of playing the stodgy Captain America and James Bond, now free to go broad as walking, talking cartoons.

Structurally, Johnson borrows from Sleuth and Deathtrap, two movies (both based on plays) that spring huge surprises every 30 minutes or so, defying the audience's presumptions. But Johnson also, somewhat incongruously, takes from Columbo, a TV show that usually told viewers more than even the hero knew. A Columbo episode nearly always starts with the who, how, and why of a murder, then spends the next hour or so following LAPD homicide detective Lt. Columbo as he pecks away at snobby killers who are certain they've committed the perfect crime.

The Rockford Files, Barnaby Jones, Cannon. Each of these shows also pitted lumpy, world-weary types against the kind of glamorous people that '70s TV viewers might've read about in, well, People. Of all the classic '70s detective series though, Columbo was the most overt with its class-conflict themes.

Peter Falk played Columbo as a seemingly in-over-his-head LAPD lifer, clad in a rumpled trench coat and driving a beat-up old car. He'd disarm suspects with his obsequiousness, peppering them with deceptively flattering inquiries into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. How do all their fancy, expensive gadgets work? What's the best way to pick a good bottle of wine? What does a bigwig do all day? Before they knew what had happened, Columbo had asked the one question that exposed their biggest mistake.

Knives Out waits until roughly the end of its first act before jumping into an extended flashback that reveals how Harlan died and who was involved. Then, Columbo-style, we watch as the chief suspect shadows Benoit, desperately trying to steer the detective away from the clues. It's all wonderfully suspenseful, watching a smart P.I. piece together what we already know.

Benoit Blanc is ultimately more of a Christie or a Dashiell Hammett-style hero than a Columbo. He's dapper and eloquent, and he projects a know-it-all confidence that makes his quarry nervous. Still, like many of the best detectives, he combines a deep cynicism about human nature with a sentimental attachment to underdogs and lost causes.

Knives Out can be savage in its depiction of the Thrombey family. But what makes it such a crowd-pleaser is that Johnson also expresses a reassuring optimism that human decency will prevail, and that justice will favor the hard-working and good-hearted over the pernicious and self-serving — no matter how loaded they may be.

This, in essence, is the appeal of these stories where a Miss Marple or a Sam Spade wears a criminal down. It's not that the great mystery writers think millionaires are inherently evil. It's more that they recognize the common, infuriating belief among aristocrats that money should buy them the benefit of the doubt. Their stacks of cash are meant to insulate them from any consequences.

In another Columbo-esque move in Knives Out, the suspects play along with the investigation until it starts to cut a little too close to the truth, at which point they presume they have the power to end it. They're not used to being questioned, so they figure their cooperation is wholly voluntary.

But the most original twist in this rollicking, unpredictable whodunnit doesn't involve a key clue or a shocking revelation. It's more about the way the detective hero peels away the Thrombeys' defenses, by forcing them to admit how little they've actually accomplished in their lives.

In some mysteries, the rich pay any price to keep the public from finding out about some sexual indiscretion or long-buried crime. In Knives Out, the scandal is more insidious: It's that these wealthy people who demand deference have never really earned a penny of their income. It's a secret that runs so deep, even the people carrying it are clueless.

What I Read in November

 Cache

I didn't read much in November, but I still finished four books - including two of my favorite reads of the year, which I'd say makes for a successful reading month.

Up next? I'm about to finish She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement - just in time to hear author & Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jodi Kantor speak at my work conference later this month!

As December begins, I know I won't come anywhere near my goal of reading 80 books by the end of the year - but hey, sometimes life gets in the way. It's been a good reading year, regardless of the numbers - & I hope to finish a few great ones to round out the year. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, here's what I finished in November:

Whisper Network by Chandler Baker
Five coworkers (with varying degrees of friendship) have all had their own experiences & run-ins with the man who may soon take over their company. What will happen those experiences & run-ins start to bubble to the surface? And whose death is it that is being discussed in the trial transcripts that appear between each chapter? I stayed up late to finish this one, & I'm still thinking about it. ★★★★★

Speak No Evil by Liana Gardner
I received an ARC of this book from Hidden Gems, & it took me a very long time to finish it. There was a lot going on here: evangelical snake charmers, abusive foster families, a Native American reservation, a period of self-imposed silence, a chatty psychologist, a stabbing... it was a lot to follow & keep track of. I was torn: It was compelling enough that I wanted to know where it was going & how it ended, but it was a long, winding, & ultimately unsatisfactory road to get there. ★★★☆☆

Color Me In by Natasha Diaz
When Nevaeh's parents divorce, she & her mom move in with their Black, Christian relatives; meanwhile, her white, Jewish dad pushes her to have a belated bat mitzvah, leaving Nevaeh to balance familial expectations, & racial tensions. It had potential, & I appreciated the ending, but there were a lot of smaller storylines that jumbled the overall effect. It could've been pared way down for a more impactful story. ★★★☆☆

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
Oh, this book is so beautiful. It's written in verse - not quote poetry, maybe, but almost like a written version of spoken-word? OK, I guess that is poetry. This is a memoir of the author's childhood growing up in Ohio, in the South, in Brooklyn - her complex relationships with her grandparents, her mother, her siblings. I highlighted so many passages in my Kindle that I may just need to buy a physical copy of the book. ★★★★★

Tell me what you're reading, then add me on Goodreads to keep in touch & see what I've read in months past. You can also follow my bookstagram account!

CWEP Project 2

 Cache

Hello, my name is Chandler and my company is called Unforgettable Events. The idea came for the name came from the song Unforgettable by Nat King Cole. My parents were known for singing the duet version and parties and events and I loved watching them sing together. They made every moment Unforgettable and that's my goal for all events I plan. My brand will likely be a teal color, I'm not sure on design yet. I want something soft and elegant but also instantly recognizable. My favorite color is teal or Tiffany Blue and people have started to know me by the color so I plan to stick to that family of colors and continue on my already known colors.

My target market is weddings of small to medium size with opportunity to grow in the future. I will not have any overhead charges for a building as I will work from home and meet with clients in coffee shops or other available spaces such as venues. My goal for my first year in business is to book at least 5 events and break even. The goal for year five will be to have additional coordinators on payroll and by year ten to have a one-stop shop that allows brides to pick from complete packages including beauty, photo, attire, etc.

I look forward to using parts of this project to assist me as I break into this wonderful industry.
