Wrong French address to public opinion

 Cache
The French Foreign Minister has called the accession of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland and Belgium to the European Special Financial Mechanism(INSTEX) an indication of "Europe's commitment to a nuclear deal with Iran"! These ridiculous statements indicate that the French still intend to continue their joint game with the United States of America against the Islamic Republic of Iran. This dangerous, albeit unpredictable, game was started and continued by U.S. and French Presidents (Trump and Emmanuel Macron) in year 2017.

Malone Interview (CNBC), Iger Book, Bubble Watch

 Cache
People keep talking about how crazy the market is, up more than 25% this year. It's a big year to be sure. But on the the other hand, even though the market has been decent in recent years, it hasn't been particularly bubblicious.

To put the 25% return into context, I think it's a good idea to look at it over 2 years or 3 years.  Since the end of 2017, for example, the market has return an annualized 8.4%/year.  Pretty good to be sure.  Since the end of 2016, its up around 12%/year.  Going back five years, it's up 8.8%/year (these figures exclude dividends).

Not bad at all, but not bubble-like either. If you were going to train an AI machine to look for bubbles, you would look at valuations (interest rate adjusted), sentiment etc. But one of the biggest factors that I would include would be historical returns over various time frames; strong performance reinforces the positive loop of increasing positive sentiment -> higher prices -> better-looking historical returns -> increasing optimism and 'proof' (both statistical and social) of the greatness of stocks etc.

The 10-year return is 10.9%/year, but that's off a depressed level due to the great recession. Over 20 years, the market has gone up only 4%/year.

Here is a table of the S&P 500 index change over various time periods.

S&P 500 Annualized Returns Through November 2019 (excl. dvd)

1-year return:    25.30%
2-year return:      8.39%
3-year return:    11.95%
4-year return:    11.34%
5-year return:      8.81%
10-year return:  10.91%
20-year return:    3.87%
30-year return:    7.55%
50-year return:    7.31%

S&P 500 Annualized Returns Through December 1999 (excl dvd)

1-year return:   19.53%
2-year return:   23.05%
3-year return:   25.64%
4-year return:   24.28%
5-year return:   26.18%
10-year return: 15.31%
20-year return: 13.95%
30-year return:   9.67%
50-year return:   9.36%

This is pretty insane. The annualized return over 5 years to December 1999 was 26%! And we are sort of freaking out that the market is up over 25% year-to-date in a single year, and not even double digits annualized over 2 years.

So anyway, that's why it doesn't really feel like a bubble. People aren't quitting their jobs (to trade stocks), buying new cars (with their capital gains), bigger houses and things like that we saw back in 2000. Most people I talk to still tend to hate stocks, the financial crisis still fresh in their minds.

Iger Book

I just finished the Iger book, and it was also a pretty great read. Iger seems like a genuinely nice guy. CEO's tend to have an image of not being nice guys, so it's great to see someone like him make it to the top. It's possible to be decent, honest and honorable and still do well.

Buffett did mention DIS as one of the well-managed companies (along with GE at one point); his relationship with DIS goes back to when DIS bought Capital Cities during the Eisner years (and Iger was working for Thomas Murphy / Dan Burke). And I think it goes even further back than that, actually.

It's fascinating to read about the events that we've been reading about in the newspapers from the people that were involved. This one involves Buffett / Murphy / Burke, Steve Jobs, George Lucas, Pixar and a lot of what is going on in media today. This connects (unintended) to the Malone interview below.

Anyway, this book is a quick read so go get it. By the way, I have not subscribed to Disney+ yet as I am big into Netflix and there is just so much stuff there that I can barely scratch the surface of what I want to watch (by the time I cancelled the DVD part of my Netflix subscription, I had more than 400 DVD's in the queue). My favorite things are the European cop dramas (French, Belgian, German, Norwegian etc.), the Indian and Japanese shows, and of course many U.S.-based shows too. I just watched The Irishman which is really good (creepy is the special effects to make these close-to-80 year olds look middle-aged), but at the same time I also thought, gee, do we really need another wise-guy movie?

OTT Tangent
People keep talking about the competition in direct-to-consumer streaming and how increasing competition will hurt Netflix etc. This is probably true to some extent; when Netflix was the only game in town, that's one thing, but with many participants jumping in, that's another story altogether.

On the other hand, when you think about it, this is not really an either-or world. People aren't going to sit there and debate whether to switch from Netflix to Disney+ or Apple. Netflix charges $14/month or some such thing, and Disney+ is even cheaper.

A lot of people are still paying $100/month or more for the conventional video package ( I dropped that a couple of years ago mostly because I don't watch most of the channels (ESPN, for example), but what bothered me even more was that they were charging me $14/month for each cable box in the house, which seemed ridiculous to me. Those things can't cost more than $100 (look at Roku at $20; and if it actually does cost more than $100, it's for functionality that I don't need), and they are charging $14/month forever; this makes absolutely no sense.

If you cut the chord, you have $100/month in video budget you can allocate (you still need to pay for the internet), so you can have Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO and a few other things and still be under $100...

Malone Interview
There are a few annual events that are really exciting to me. Of course the Berkshire annual meeting (I just watch the video later), annual report, JPM annual report etc.

And another one of those is the CNBC John Malone interview by David Faber. Faber is one of the few people (of the reporters/anchors), if not the only one, who seems to understand the market and business.

Anyway, I jotted down some notes while watching the recent interview (done during the Liberty Media investor day). This is not everything, though, but a large part of it. He also talked about regulation, GOOG etc, for example, so go check out the video.

Here are Malone's thoughts on various topics:

Who is best positioned in streaming right now?
Malone answered by rephrasing the question to, "Who will be around in five years?"
Disney and Netflix.

DIS
Disney has great content, a great global brand, but doesn't have a large direct relationship with customers so must piggy back on those who do, like Verizon.

NFLX
Netflix, so far in the lead, good base / revenue stream.

AAPL
Apple may surprise. Slim content, but has great distribution in their direct customer relationships. They offer free for one year to buyers of AAPL products etc...
AAPL has optionality; see how it goes and decide how much they want to spend (how much they can afford).

HBO, AMZN
HBO is a decent service, but doesn't have the revenue stream to match Netflix.
AMZN has a totally different monetization strategy so... not primary biz.
Content is for marketing. AMZN may evolve to become a bundler of others' content

Tech companies want to be the platform, get info on customers, be gateway,
let others waste money on content.

DIS will be successful.

Direct relationship w/ customer in scale with growth and pricing power is a powerful business model.
DIS knows they need direct consumer relationship.

HBO Max: HBO content budget was $2bn/year.
If you want HBO, you already have it, so not much gain in new customers in the U.S.?   Malone doesn't see the growth. Maybe even attrition.
HBO budget is not enough to protect for the long term.  Takes years to develop content internationally. Don't own rights to intl distribution.  Problem seeing scale at HBO to get to top of direct consumer biz.  HBO is the same as it's been for 25 years. If you want it, you already have it so where is the growth?HBO may capture wholesale spread (as big bundle moves to direct).

ATT will face challenges. Historically has been the biggest dog in every fight, but not now, and not in this space (streaming media). About scale and globality. Need global scale, or won't get enough scale to compete in this space. This will be the challenge for ATT, HBO. FANG companies are all global. If you're only in the U.S., how do you compete?

Sports is glue that keeps big bundle together... will eventually blow up. Not sure when... big bundle still overpriced due to sports content...

Content Cost
At some point, hail Mary passes for some will prove to not be working so content cost will moderate. Some will fail (and stop spending) etc...

NFLX will have to moderate spend at some point.  Bundling of these services will happen too. Distributors may bundle too, if it reduces churn etc... will evolve like traditional cable. Comcast offers Netflix etc.

Cord cutting will level off. Erosion won't stop completely, though...

Cutting video increases margins at cable companies as margins for broadband is higher. Happening naturally.

Satellite will end up serving people with no other options, rural etc.

Linear TV will lose subscribers, ads, but as you get direct relationships, value of ads go up as you know more about customers.  Ad rev potential goes up; more focused ads etc.  Have to fight decline in reach due to decline of big bundle.  Provide content direct through app and sell content to others etc. Random access via app; if you subscribe to Discovery Channel, you get stuff through app too (not everything).

Cable industry changed when congress changed retransmission constraints; Margins started to go down. Content providers were able to extract more and more...

Will be profitable for people with unique situations, consistent, stable demand, pricing power, level of uniqueness...  those businesses ultimately gets regulated.

Discovery
Discovery owns content globally, generating free cash, need to migrate to direct to consumer.
Malone bought more stock this week (November 2019).  Discovery will solve issues. Stock is dramatically undervalued. Malone bought $75 mn worth of stock. Growing, generating free cash. Market cap to levered free cash flow, cheapest on screen... They own all their content, generates tons of cash, investment grade b/s, they are growing while others are shrinking (5.5x cash flow). Cheap for good company...
Malone paid $28.03/share.

CBS/VIA
They have no global presence. Lot of content is bought. CBS is totally dependent on sports rights so not sure about long-term profitability.  Not sure if CBS has enough power to carry all the channels.
VIA underinvested for many years, bought back stock at high prices, tactical mistake.
How important is MTV, Nickleodean to distributors? Question sustainability of model, and also they are U.S. only.

Yes, stock is historically cheap, but...  licensing out content to others. Ice cube melts faster when you don't put content on your own channel.

CBS/VIA needs to get global for long term sustainability. Find niche, glue to make customers sticky. Something unique.

Lions Gate
Sold LionsGate; didn't see them execute strategy of using library/content to drive Starrs. They focused too much on selling content instead of driving their own distribution.

Need global scale, or niche in small area that big guys don't care about to survive.

Wired and Wireless Together
Liberty Global followed strategy based on belief that combination of wired and wireless would lead to synergies. Turned out to be true.  Belgium, Holland (combined with Vodaphone).  Once they built scale, they were able to acquire. Synergies were real and very substantial.

In U.S, for Charter, same idea. Keep growing until they understand the economics of a combination. At the moment, not far along enough on that path.  Once scale is achieved, think about building own network. Hybrid tranmission over time. Could be joint ventures, mergers etc.

Malone interested in Altice, but Patrick wants control etc...

Uber
Not an expert, but doesn't understand Uber, how is scale going to make it profitable? Like selling hot dogs at a loss and making it up in volume. Can't see how scale changes economics. Can't understand why Dara took job.

Politics
Worries about attack on success and wealth in this country.
Worries about where country is going.

If Warren wins, wealth destruction will exceed wealth transfer.  Has places in Ireland, Canada, Bahamas etc... (that he can escape to),  but Malone rather stay here, be optimistic about balance.

Malone is Libertarian, would vote for Bloomberg.

Trump has right strategy, but not the right guy; he doesn't build a team. A lot of people that worked for him trying to take him down now.

Midnight Sun Rifle Challenge Pt3

 Cache

Kit lists. I’ve made a few. Mistakes I’ve made, a few more. Days when the sun never sets, I’ve only seen one.

In the shambling spirt of Newby and Carless’ English amateur adventurism on their Short walk in the Hindu Kush, having watched a few videos by Thomas Haugland, I send a text to One Man Rifle-Maker.

‘Midnight Sun Rifle Challenge 2019… fancy it?’ and receive the reply “ texted Thomas to say we’re entering”

Of all the events in the Viking Rifle Series calendar the MSRC is quite possibly the least appropriate entry point. It’s billed as ’24 hours of misery and fun’. Which in legal terms means they did give us fair warning.

This is my second whistle-stop holiday with OMR.
The last one was a pistol shooting trip of less than 24 hours, he’s not a fan of; travel, Europe, or anything other than the plainest food. He does like Norway though and despite his obvious discomfort he was a font of good cheer, I’d defiantly have cracked without him. Never did get to see him eat pickled Herring, which was something of a disappointment.

I spend a while talking up the plan, clearly no one believes i’m actually going. I make a few half hearted attempts to start a fitness plan, I will admit they look deeply unconvincing. I get sciatica, I enrol in a pilates class, the pilates class finishes and somehow i leave the yoga milfs to their fate and don't re enrol.

The moment where you get to represent your country on the world stage is an honour few of you will ever be afforded, but just occasionally its possible to promote yourself to those dizzy heights without a man in a blazer, with a clipboard, telling you legal action will ensue should you continue.
Still flying high on a moment of optimism, bravado and irony we become The Precision Wombles aka Team GB [self appointed]. Secretly hopeful that no more deserving competitor will make themselves known.

All of a sudden we’ve committed to flying to the top bit of Europe to compete against real Vikings in a sport where, at best we’re the founder members of the veteran-novice division, just two ill-prepared chubsters who should be old enough to know better.

It’s not like we’ve entered the Marathon des Sables. How bad can it be?

It turns out Vikings learned to shoot across valleys at concealed targets with their first plate of fermented herring. We’re squadded with lads two thirds of my age. One of ‘em  takes second overall. Most of them are probably only two thirds of my weight too.

As members of separate gun clubs we both tried to inveigle others into joining us. We set up a facebook group which we join a few friends to, responses are for the most part muted. The clubs both have a lot of 308 and 223 shooters who work it all out in Minutes Of Angle, so perhaps ‘Build a 6mm/6.5mm rig with a scope that reads in Milliradians ’ as a minimum bid was a big ask.

All I got was flat out refusal(s) to even contemplate entering:

The Tall Geek: No. I’d have no chance of winning.
Club matriarch-in-waiting: That sounds like its an long way from the hotel. No.
South Side D: No. Walking! No. Are you mad? Did I say No?

OMR at least mustered a few broken promises. But in the end it was just two tubby Precision Wombles who make up Team GB [self appointed]

There is a saying [often attributed to the British Army] : Proper Preparation Prevents Piss-Poor Performance.
I wouldn’t know, but I can attest to the opposite being completely true.

On one of my sporadic trips to practice I’d suffered catastrophic scope failure, On the whole I’d still recommend a Delta Stryker for the money [and the new model looks even better] but my first one died losing its lateral tracking after just over 200 rounds. Delta are making some serious inroads into the VRS so later  I took the opportunity to canvas every other user I met, and it seems I was in the unlucky 1%. The vendor had arranged for me to be sent a replacement. It arrived with about ten days to spare, time and tide being what they are that equated to one and a bit  panicked visits to the range.

I say ‘one and a bit’ as on the first outing the staff found the perimeter fence had been cut, which necessitated a cease fire order while the whole facility was searched, needless to say this took up most of our booking. Our non-refundable booking.

When I got my rig it came with a couple of cases of home loads which proved to be accurate at 100 and 200 yards, so pressed for time, I duplicated them. 140 SST’s sitting long in the case and right at the bottom of the charge table, hindsight is a wonderful thing, a hotter load with a flatter trajectory may also prove to be a wonderful thing out at 1210m.

Amateurish I know, ‘schoolboy error’ I hear you say, but OMR was not to be out done. On our return from Norway within a couple of weeks he’s sold most of his battery and bought himself a very handy Ruger Precision in 6.5CM which, being a fair bit lighter than the Tiktac, looks just the ticket for these competitions. I only mention this as it’s the dawn come to cast out the mordor-ish  shadow of the strategy he employed during the actual competition. Although he owned some highly accurate stalking rifles, just like the rest of us there are slots in the battery that are filled by rifles bought on a whim. In his case it was a Steyr Pro in .260 that would more honestly be marketed as the Steyr Flex-O-matic. Its nasty plastic stock distorts if you tighten the action screws, it wobbles if you don’t, several people claimed to be able to see the barrel whipping from side to side like a tuning fork. Perhaps remembering Thomas’ video where Thomas felt that a ten round magazine would give the shooter an advantage on several of the stages, OMR brought the Flex-O. A decision he was to regret. Frequently.

I’ve never traveled internationally with a firearm before so its with some trepidation that i rock up at Gatwick Airport, at OMR’s instance, four hours early, I’ve got my pack and a Peli 1750 with my rifle in it. Which probably weighs as much as my ex wife.
That morning in Gatwick airport it dawns on me that I’d not prepared an opening gambit, walking up to a woman you’ve never met before, in an airport, and saying “I have a gun” is frowned upon pretty much everywhere. I decide to go with the euphemism ‘sporting goods’
I’ve now got the massive rifle case and fairly substantial pack balanced on an airport trolly, buffeting other passengers aside, I make it over to the woman organising the queue, and enquire where I should be.
“Gun?”
‘Yes it is’
“Have you got a licence for it?”
‘Yes and I brought it with me otherwise I’m in a fair amount of trouble’,
“Just go and stand over there babe’

OMR arrives before the armed response team and we wait together. The next woman gesticulates calling us to her desk, “Sporting goods to Oslo? “ She seems genuinely delighted to have something out of the ordinary to do and having drawn a blank over the phone leaves us at the desk to make procedural enquires in person. She in turn hands us to a fella who also seems nonplussed by this freak event, he goes off, he comes back and he goes off.

You need a European Firearms Pass to travel in Europe with your guns, but not to return [we’ll come to that later], Of course Norway was in the EU, but left. Being the pragmatic sorts that they are, and having long, permeable land borders with both Sweden and Finland [both still in the EU] they kept the simplified traveling-with-guns process. If you have an EU firearms pass you just walk through Nothing To Declare channel. If you don’t you need to be issued a temporary pass at the airport.

Its fashionable to moan about our firearms licensing system but credit where credit’s due the Metropolitan Police turned around my request for a EU pass in less than a week.
OMR’s force seemed to mistake ‘issue’ with ‘grant’ and had to be reminded of their service obligation by the NRA’s legal team. Whatever Brexit ends up meaning, if you have even the vaguest intention of traveling in Europe you’d be wise to get one issued, they’re free, and existing passes will probably be grandfathered in. People without EU passes will need a day off at each end of the trip to complete all the forms.

Flying with firearms is notoriously a hassle, Ryan Air, my carrier of last resort, won’t even let you take a bow and arrows. Perhaps because Norway is a long country and the roads are clogged with Moose the national carrier almost expects you to have your rife with you. To fly with your firearm on Norwegen Air its £30 each way in advance or £60 on the day. OMR had spent much of the previous day on the phone forlornly trying to pay. Norwegen Air’s london office wouldn’t accept payment as the tickets had been sold by a third party, the seller wouldn’t accept payment as the request had Guns in the the title.

The morning is ticking by. I’m putting a brave face on the growing sense of urgency. OMR isn’t keen on travel at the best of times. We’ve been passed from pillar to post. Eventually we meet with a nice man from Border Farce in a side office who makes a cursory inspection of our toys. We’ve handed over our rifles and ammo and he’s recorded us, and our rifle’s serial numbers in a ledger the trip is firmly in the lap of the old norse gods. We could arrive as competitors, or as observers awaiting compensation with a lot of explaining to do. The UK licensing authority takes an extremely dim view of allowing others to lose your rifle and ammo.
In the excitement no one has extended their enquires as to how to charge us. So far so cheap.

There are two sorts of english people at airports. Glam people and bus people. The glam people who seem to imagine there’s still something glamorous about air travel; they have their hair done, they dress up in their designer duds, and many of them spend time in an orangeification booth, all in a futile attempt to pass themselves off as classy international travellers. Like a horrible parody of what a poor person imagines a rich person looks like. Europe’s low cost airlines are often somewhere between the bus and the train in price, once out of earshot the staff will refer you and your loved ones as ‘the mud people’. Its all about as glamorous as a picnic in a supermarket carpark.  On Team Bus we bring our own grub and only travel with hand luggage.

Gatwick is a horrible place and the airport its low point. The GBP [great british public] has little great about them. As usual its full of wildly over dressed women accompanied by their moody aggressive spouses, teenage girls with those handbags that cost as much as a pelican rifle case, dribbling children being towed along on garish suitcases by overwrought parents. Probably a hub for air rage. Defiantly a hub for bad skin.
My usually solution would be to put a few away, but its still a bit early for more than a cursory Gin & Tonic, so we have breakfast instead. There’s a ‘spoons’. We have burgers. I have vague memories of OMR only eating plain food. He has his burger with nothing, just a patty and a bun, so plain that the barman says ‘mine are the same, kids can be so fussy, I bet next week they’ll want it with chilli sauce’.
Feeling a rush of bonhomie I ask the barman ‘Can i  have his pickles on mine? “This is the spoons mate, it’s not like we have real chefs”.

A couple of three hours later Oslo airport is everything you might expect it to be; spotless, made of laminated birch, and populated mainly by calm attractive tall people. The food stands look to be about he same standard as the hipster bars of hackney, the seating looks like it won a design award, the litter bins look like they came second. Here, to our consternation, the system breaks down momentarily. Our rifles need to be checked out of customs, then in again and the stop over will be conducted against the clock.
Some speedy wombling later.  At the far end of the concourse we find a baggage guy who restores order, and we head upstairs to the check in for the next leg of the journey.
Pillar-to-post begins again.  At the second counter we’re sent to the woman in charge gives us the cold one and asks why we haven’t paid, resisting the urge to haggle I offer to pay and we’re indignantly told she won’t be accepting payment, in retrospect this may have been some kind of super-dry Norwegian joke, we’re sent back the way we’ve come to see yet another chica check in, where we re-tell the story of our needs, convey our growing sense of urgency, and general mystification. An unexpected, yet welcome, “But why should you pay?” later our bags are checked and once again we really do seem to be £120 up on the morning.

Leaving the unexpected delights of Oslo Airport behind we’re off the ground and on route.
From the air Norway looks like a archipelago of little blue-grey islands set in a narrow green sea,
We touch down on a small airport surrounded by snow covered peaks. Being Norwegians there’s none of the tedious pushing and grumbling you get when a plane full of English people arrives in Spain. So disembarking takes half the time.
We wait by a luggage carousel so small you’d wonder why they bothered. Bardufoss airport serves some far flung military outpost where very young soldiers are sent to feel home-sick, and there are soldiers of both sexes, still in uniform, leaving for their holidays. One of them, as evidenced by his name tags, is literally called THOR.
How Viking is that?

To say the Viking Rifle Series appeared bemused by our entry would be an understatement. But as competitors from Poland and Belgium all seemed to manage it, perhaps it was just us?
We  registered in plenty of time, we’re offered places a while later, tried to pay but the transfer service didn’t like paying to accounts held in two names. Thomas kindly made a call on our behalf and the match director helped us with registration and promised to send someone to pick us up.

A Tall fella in outdoor dungarees and a thousand yard stare meets us at the airport, outdoor dungarees are more a sign of the outdoorsman than camo ever is, and when they’re patched with different ages and colours of patches you know he’s spent a few days afield. I mention this as you’ll meet him again later. He’s our driver, and a bit of a wag. He has that great northern thing where its still played for laughs, but delivered totally deadpan. For example this was his opening gambit. Delivered from behind a thousand yard stare

So what are your first impressions?
SBW: Its very beautiful, you’re all very tall, and the wit is very served dry
So I’m a cliche?

He drops us off in town and we spend a sunlit expensive night in a very tolerable hotel. Overcome with excitement I buy a beer, just a can of beer. 100 NK or a tenner! Its not even a nice beer. One of the kids working the hotel’s night shift has lived in london, he rubs it in by reminding me a tenner is dinner two in The ‘Spoons.

For readers overseas: ‘The Spoons’ is a pub chain called JD Wetherspoons, where large commercial spaces like car showrooms, are repurposed into giant soulless pubs selling very cheap food and drink. Open from 8am they are both a cheap place to have breakfast, and perform the role that drop-in centres used to, for care-in-the-community types before austerity cut the funding. You’re very likely to be accosted by half hearted beggars on the doorstep, bags of shop-lifted steaks may be offered for sale, and its not unknown to find the staff crying in the toilets. I despise the owner, his childish politics and the way he treats his staff. But principles are for rich people, its a fine breakfast that comes with endless refills of Lavazza. For a fiver. I cant stay out of the place.

Next time I’m in Bardufoss I’ll probably have transport and get an Air BnB as there are some really nice looking places on offer just outside town, but the hotel was fine, spectacular water pressure and flow rate in the shower, a firm supportive bed, and blackout curtains worthy of the name. I slept like a log. OMR tells me his nights sleep was stolen from him by horrendous snoring like a banjo duel played on chainsaws, cant say I heard it, must have slept though it.

At Hotel Bardufoss they lay on a truly spectacular breakfast buffet, determined to claw back the tenner for that beer I shovel down breakfast in every European tradition: fruit course, cold cuts, muesli, yogurts [plural], fried things, and eggs a plenty.

OMR has toast. Just plain toast. I knock up a few rounds of sandwiches for later.

There's more
Your pal SBW

More Than 1000 Schools Get Antidote for Christmas

Just in time for Christmas, 1036 schools will be receiving a free license allowing them to install Antidote, Druide informatique’s flagship writing assistance software, on ten computers. Druide made the announcement as part of the GRICS’s annual conference, a network that brings together all of Quebec’s school boards in order to help them meet their information technology needs.

Druide has promised to donate a copy of Antidote to a school for every ten copies of Antidote sold at retail in Canada and Belgium. The purchasers of Antidote get to choose the winners by voting for the school of their choice. And many voted; no less than 100,932 of them judged that their school of choice could make good use of Antidote’s educational potential.

Quebec is home to the majority of the lucky schools. Since Antidote’s first edition appeared in 1996, a total of 3799 schools have shared the privilege of installing Antidote on 42,591 computers. This represents more than 4.25 million dollars in software and maintenance handed out to educational institutions.

Druide is pleased to collaborate with its clients in contributing to the task of teaching and improving the quality of the French language. Antidote is able to provide a valuable service to students, young and old. Its extensive resources for writing in French, primarily designed for the business world, are easy to use and accessible to everyone.

Made up of an advanced corrector, numerous dictionaries, and language guides, Antidote interacts directly with major word processing and email programs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Launched last year, Antidote 10 includes more than 120 new features for English and French, including more than 2.5 million translations of words and expressions for its bilingual version.

Druide informatique produces and markets Antidote, the most complete writing assistance software suite available for English and French, as well as Typing Pal, the renowned typing tutorial application. The company is also the creator of WebElixir, a quality assurance service for websites. In addition to its software, Druide publishes French-language literature and reference works through its subsidiary, Éditions Druide.

Portugal, France and Germany in Euro 2020 super group

Germany coach Joachim Loew, Portugal coach Fernando Santos and France coach Didier Deschamps pose with the trophy after being drawn in group E.

BUCHAREST, Saturday - Defending champions Portugal and the last two world champions, France and Germany, were thrown together in what German coach Joachim Loew described as the group of death following a lop-sided and complicated Euro 2020 draw on Saturday.

England were drawn against Croatia in a repeat of last year’s World Cup semi-final while other favourites were given a much easier ride in the 24-team tournament which will be played in 12 different countries across the region.

The clear pick of the six first round pools was Group F, to be played in Munich and Budapest, which pitted France, Portugal and Germany, plus the winners of either playoff A or D. However, the sting was slightly taken away by the format which allows four of the six third-placed teams to qualify for the round of 16, UEFA’s decision to rank the teams according to their result in the qualifiers, combined with Portugal’s performance in their group, meant they ended up among the third seeds while France were one of the second seeds.

“This is a group of death,” said Loew whose side will play all three games at home under competition rules. “The expectations will be quite high. For our young team, this will be huge challenge but also a big motivation.”

England and Croatia, who have met in the Nations League since Croatia’s 2-1 win in Moscow last year, will be joined in Group D by the Czech Republic and the winners of playoff C - either Scotland, Norway, Serbia or Israel.

The Group D winners will face the runners-up from Germany’s group in the round of 16 while the second-placed team will travel to Copenhagen to meet the Group E runners-up - potentially an easier match.

The Group will be played in London - host for the semi-finals and final - and Glasgow.

Other favourites were given a much easier-looking ride.

Italy, who won all 10 qualifying games as they bounced back from failing to make the last World Cup, will face Turkey, Wales and Switzerland in Group A, in Rome and Baku.

“We have a slight advantage by playing at home. Maybe some will think we are favourites but we need to confirm everything on the pitch, as always,” Italy coach Roberto Mancini said.

Euro 2008 and 2012 champions Spain, who will jointly host Group E in Bilbao with Dublin, play Sweden, Poland and playoff winner B - either Bosnia, Slovakia, Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Belgium’s opponents in Group B will be Denmark and Russia -who are both host nations - and Finland, who will be making their first appearance in a European Championship or World Cup. The Netherlands, who like Italy missed out on the last World Cup, were pitted against Ukraine, Austria and playoff winner A or D in Group C, which will be played in Amsterdam and Bucharest.

Under the complex rules, all host nations will play their group games at home, meaning a number of teams had been allocated their groups before the draw

“The rules are clear, they were accepted by everybody,” said UEFA deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti. “Portugal are in pot three because they didn’t win their group, and the winner of their group was Ukraine. And Ukraine, thanks to their results, are in pot one, and everybody accepts it because once again we have clear rules.” – Agencies

Ask Slashdot: Is Your Company Using Linux Desktops?

 Cache
SomeoneFromBelgium writes: Yesterday I spoke to a friend of mine who works for a company developing mostly integrated network solutions which are purely Linux-based. He complained that he was unable to convince his IT department to provide him and his fellow developers and testers with a Linux desktop. They stated that "it was more secure when using a VM". We both agreed that the more likely problem is that the IT department is solely geared towards a Windows desktop environment and that they have neither the skills nor the inclination to support any other platform. This got me wondering: is this also your experience? I bet Slashdot's readers have stories to tell, with enlightening experiences in corporate workplaces over the years gone by. So feel free to share your thoughts, opinions, and anecdotes in the comments. And is your company using Linux desktops?

15 of the best cyclocross bikes — drop-bar dirt bikes for racing and playing in the mud

 Cache

What cyclocross bike should I buy? That's a very good question - one we hear a lot - and there's plenty of choice, from race-ready options to bikes that come with rack and mudguard mounts for a bit more versatility.

The cyclocross bikes on this page offer just a selection of the available choice. We've tried to pick bikes that will cater for all tastes, from those specifically looking to buy a bike with a view to getting into racing, to those that are interested in the versatility and ruggedness for a winter training and commuting bike.

For a while it looked like cyclocross bikes would be the last redoubt of cantilever brakes, with their sticky-out arms and straddle cables, but there are now almost no cyclocross bikes with rim brakes. Discs have taken over, a development many die-hard cross enthusiasts said would never happen when the UCI changed its rules to allow them in elite races in 2010.

Ribble CGR AL Shimano 105 — £1,399

Ribble CGR AL Shimano 105 review

Ribble's CGR AL Shimano 105 is a hugely versatile and superb value bike for everything from gravel bashing to cyclocross and road commuting. The aluminium frame isn't overly compliant and the kit needs a few tweaks if you intend to mostly stick to dirt, but that's easy enough to custom spec it to your heart's content when you order.

The CGR bit of the name stands for Cyclocross, gravel and road, which tells you pretty much everything you need to know about where this bike is pitched, namely as a do-it-all drop bar bike. The impressive thing is that it actually delivers on this promise, having taken in everything from gravel rides, road Audaxes and tow-path bashing commutes.

Boardman CXR 8.9 — £1,000

Boardman CXR 8.9

With race-orientated handling, a single chainring for simplicity and hydraulic brakes for control, the Boardman CXR 8.9 is a bargain entry to the world of drop-bar dirt bikes.

Vitus Energie CRX 2020 — £1,954.99

2020 Vitus Energie CRX Force

The Vitus Energie CRX cyclocross bike is an absolute blast to ride thanks to sharp, fun handling along the trails or around tight, technical muddy circuits. It's great for a day out on the gravel, and you can chuck mudguards on it too if you fancy a high-speed, year-round commuter.

If you want to ride fast off-road without the benefits of suspension then this Vitus is one of the best bikes to have a play on. The racy geometry and low-slung position mean you can really get down and drop that centre of gravity to benefit the handling when the terrain is tough, and the way it responds to the slightest shift in body weight is very impressive.

Genesis Vapour 30 — £2,599.99

2020 Genesis Vapour 30

The Genesis Vapour 30 offers a fun ride that feels at home in a race and on a trail. The build isn't that flashy, but the package works well and continues to do so in the worst conditions. You'll be wanting a wheel upgrade for more serious racing, though.

Get the Vapour 30 into technical conditions and it's a joy to ride. The planted feel of the bike combined with a front end that is direct means that muddy corners are easy to navigate. On corners where I'd usually lose the front end, I was able to get around easily on the Genesis. That means less running which is great because firstly, I hate running, and secondly, riding is nearly always faster.

The handling really helps you to keep speed through corners, and getting back up to speed again much easier. This doesn't just help in races. Take this out onto the trails or the road and the bike transfers that same cornering confidence across surfaces. Compared with my road race bike, it doesn't feel sluggish on the tarmac; it feels light underneath you but floats better over rough surfaces thanks, mostly, to the fatter tyres.

Canyon Inflite CF SLX 9.0 Team 2020 — £4,099

2020 Inflite CF SLX 9.0 Team

Canyon's DNA is pure racing, and the Inflite CF SLX frame is a clear statement of intent: a frame that builds into bikes fit for the toughest and most demanding cyclocross racers and budding amateurs alike. It's light – 940g for a frame – disc brake-only and 1x and 2x compatible, and features the most distinctive top tube we've ever seen.

The Inflite CF SLX might not be the prettiest cyclocross bike ever produced, but there's nowt ugly about its performance, which is nothing short of stellar. Over a couple of months, tester David Arthur rode it in loads of local races to really get its measure. The Canyon immediately impressed. It brings sheer speed and easy handling to the Sunday morning mud party, with a delightful nimbleness that makes it easy to steer the bike around often awkward and fiddly cyclocross courses.

Read our review of the Canyon Inflite CF SLX 8.0 Pro Race, which shares the same frame

Boardman Elite CXR 9.4 Ultegra Di2 2019 — £1,999 (limited sizes)

2019 Boardman Elite CXR 9.4 Ultegra Di2

The whole gravel/adventure thing may have softened some bikes a touch to make them more versatile but Boardman's CXR 9.4 is having none of it.

'Ready to race straight out of the box,' it says on Boardman's website and while it could do with a couple of minor tweaks the CXR 9.4 is one flickable, lightweight off-road rocket which is an absolute blast on the technical stuff.

This latest version has Shimano's Di2 electronic shifting for effortless gear changes and a single chainring to keep things as mechanically simple as possible.

The Light Blue Robinson Rival 1x — £1,700

The Light Blue Robinson 1x - riding 1.jpg

The Robinson, from British company The Light Blue, offers a really smooth ride, with steady handling and tyres that provide a good balance of fast road riding pace and off-road grip. In this SRAM Rival 1x build with cyclocross tyres it's an ideal all-terrain bike, at home on the road or tackling more challenging countryside terrain, or for just tackling rough roads in comfort.

Giant TCX SLR 2 2020 — £1,399

2020 Giant TCX SLR 2

We liked 2016's Giant TCX SLR 1, and this is the 2020 equivalent. It gets a brake upgrade to Giant's hydraulics, but retains the fast and nimble aluminium frame as the 2016 bike. Wheel and tyres and both tubeless-compatible and with Giant's D-Fuse composite seatpost helps take the sting out of bumps.

Merida Cyclo Cross 100 — £900

2019 Merida Cyclo Cross 100

The 2019 version of the Merida Cyclo Cross 100 has a lot in common with the 2015 Merida Cyclo Cross 500, which we really liked when we reviewed it. It's a very good all-rounder. It's light and responsive enough to chuck round a race, and versatile enough for more general purpose riding. It's fun to ride and easy to recommend

The Merida Cyclo Cross platform serves up good off-road handling. The bike has a generous wheelbase and the steering is predictable, if a bit slower than a fully-fledged race bike. The fork is excellent: the 15mm thru-axle stiffens up the front end noticeably, and tracking over rough ground is really good, with very little noticeable dive under heavy braking.

Canyon Inflite AL SLX 5.0 Race — £1,499

Canyon Inflite AL SLX 5.0 Race copy

The first cyclocross bike from German company Canyon impressed hugely when we reviewed it, with great handling and a very good parts package for the money. It boasts the sort of versatility that will ensure it appeals to those wanting a bike for more than just racing, but has all the credentials for taking to the start line.

Specialized Crux — from £1,040

2019 Specialized Crux Expert

Specialized's Crux is a popular choice among amateur cyclocross racers. The four bikes in the 2018 UK range all have 1X transmissions, and the £4,000 Crux Expert above has SRAM's hydraulics and 1 x 11 transmission.

The impressive spec includes Roval C38 carbon wheels with 33mm Tracer Pro tyres. The range starts at £1,800 for the Crux E5 Sport, though there are still older models around for £1,400 and you can pick up a base-model Crux E5 for £1,040.

Ridley X-Bow Tiagra — £879.99 (limited sizes)

Ridley X-Bow Tiagra Disc

Hailing from Belgium, Ridley has one of the biggest ranges of cyclocross bikes, which is hardly surprising given that it's Belgian cycling's winter religion. The X-Bow Disc Tiagra's aluminium frame is hung with Shimano Tiagra components with a proper cyclocross-style 46/36 double chainset. The rubber that hits the (dirt) road is from Donnelly and it sits on Ridley's own 4ZA wheels with Shimano hubs.

Lissu now ready to take on Magufuli

 Cache

Tanzanian opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, has declared that he is ready to contest for the presidency in 2020 if his Chadema party gives him the ticket. Mr Lissu, who has been abroad for two years for treatment after he was shot by unknown people, says that despite the many restrictions by government, such as the ban on public rallies, persecution and arrests, support for opposition is growing and they might just surprise the world if the election was to be free and fair. Speaking in an interview on Kenya’s KTN television station, the former Singida East MP—whose seat was declared vacant on June 29 due to absentia —said that he has fully recovered but cannot return to Tanzania because his security is not assured. “I was supposed to die from the shooting or from lack of treatment. The agents responsible are now warning through the Internet that this time they will not miss,” he said. He is concerned that the opposition is under siege, and that members are being hunted down, arrested, jailed and bought and that the president is using unconstitutional means to finish the opposition He said the opposition has never said no to dialogue, but the environment does not promote dialogue. Mr Lissu, said that even during Jakaya Kikwete’s presidency, the opposition operated under difficult circumstances, but the former president occasionally met the opposition for discussions. “Now, we have a president who announced publicly that by the 2020 elections, there will be no opposition. We believe that the banning of opposition activities, arrests and my shooting are part of that promise,” said Mr Lissu. On being stripped of his parliamentary seat, he said; “The law says that a seat can be declared vacant if the holder misses three consecutive sittings. The Speaker says I did not officially notify parliament but everybody knows that I was shot 16 times and I was unconscious for one week. How can you notify the speaker in such circumstances?” Mr Lissu, who was first flown to Nairobi and later to Belgium for further treatment, says that his Chadema Party went to court to contest the declaration and it was rejected but they have appealed again. “If I keep quiet, it will create a precedent where the Speaker can remove any MP he doesn’t like. This trend cannot be allowed to continue,” he said. On the recent civic election, Mr Lissu said that Chadema and other opposition parties had prepared to take part but 3,000 candidates, amounting to 96 per cent were disqualified. “It was difficult to participate in the election with only four per cent of our candidates. We had decided to demonstrate to the world that that was not an election and we have never seen such repression in the history of Tanzania, even during the colonial time,” he said. He continued; “When a party that has been in power for nearly 60 years is afraid of civic elections, it is an indication of what will happen in 2020 and Tanzania that has been the most peaceful in the region could erupt.” By The Eastafrica

Anticipation rises for Avril Lavigne's eagerly awaited global Head Above Water tour

 Cache

Avril Lavigne is set to play her first shows abroad in nearly a decade.

Lavigne first announced the news last month, as previously reported.

The Canadian superstar is set to take her Head Above Water tour to Swizerland, Italy, Brussels, Belgium, Austria, Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Germany and the UK, before heading onto Japan, China and South East Asia.

Check ticket availability for the European, UK and Japanese leg of her worldwide tour HERE.

It will be the first time the 35-year-old has performed abroad since 2011's The Black Star Tour.

Lavigne has just finished her first North American tour here, admitting being back on stage after five years has brought her so much happiness after her long battle with Lyme disease, which she fell ill with in 2014.

The shows are in support of her album Head Above Water, which documents her battle with the illness. The record was released in February and is her first studio effort since her self-titled 2013 record.

Lavigne revealed: "Music has been more healing than ever for me.

"I was at a point where I wasn't sure whether I'd be working or even doing music again, and then I started writing songs from my bedroom.

"'Head Above Water' and 'Warrior' were the first two songs that I wrote, and then they just kept coming. It was cool for me to see because it showed me that music is such a big part of who I am without even thinking about it or trying to make a record.

"We had the most amazing time performing on the US Head Above Water Tour!! I can’t believe how quickly it went by.

"Seeing all your faces each night and feeling your energy was exactly what I needed. I truly missed being up on stage, singing with you and this has brought me so much happiness which is why I’m even more excited to announce that I’ll be taking the Head Above Water Tour worldwide next year with dates in Europe, Japan, China and Southeast Asia!"

MEPs urge "far-reaching" climate reform of EU policy

 Cache
Voices from the farm: making rural development work for farmers and the environment © Istockphoto / David WintersBrussels, Belgium - 28 November 2019

Today, the new European Parliament nailed its climate colours to the mast by voting to declare a climate and environmental emergency and calling on the European Commission to reform its policies accordingly.

The vote comes just days before governments meet at the last annual UN climate summit before they must submit updated climate plans, COP25. In two weeks' time, EU leaders will discuss a climate neutral EU goal for 2050, which is supported by all but three Member States.

Imke Lübbeke, Head of Climate and Energy at WWF European Policy Office said:
"In its first major vote on climate, the European Parliament has shown it means business, sounding the alarm and urging "far-reaching" reforms of EU policies. The European Commission must immediately begin a serious overhaul of EU farming, transport and trade rules to bring them in line with the Paris climate agreement.

"The message is also clear for EU national leaders: at COP25 and the upcoming European Council, they must do what's needed to end this climate and nature emergency," said Lübbeke.

The European Parliament also supported, once again, a 55% emissions reduction by 2030. This is far too low: the UN Emissions Gap report, released this week, shows that global emissions must fall by 7.6% annually to keep temperature rise to 1.5°C. For the EU, this would mean at least 65% cuts by 2030. WWF is also calling for a climate neutral EU target for 2040.

Mitsubishi Eyes Leading Position in Europe’s Energy Market With Eneco Acquisition

 Cache
A group led by Mitsubishi beat out other bidders including Shell in reaching a €4.1 billion ($4.5 billion) deal to buy Dutch energy company Eneco, which the Japanese conglomerate intends to make the centerpiece of its growth in the European energy market.

The winning consortium includes Mitsubishi, with an 80 percent stake, and Japanese utility Chubu, with the remaining 20 percent.

Owned by several dozen Dutch municipalities, Eneco is the second largest electricity supplier in the Netherlands and is also active in Germany and Belgium. The company operates about 2 gigawatts of wind capacity, roughly a quarter of it offshore, alongside nearly 300 megawatts of solar.

Mitsubishi is already a substantial investor in Europe's electricity market, including a 20 percent stake in U.K. electricity supplier OVO. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, part of the Mitsubishi Group, is co-owner of offshore wind turbine manufacturer MHI Vestas.

Mitsubishi plans to transfer 400 megawatts of offshore wind assets to Eneco once the all-cash acquisition goes through.

Eneco offers "a platform to further grow in the European market, in which we intend to have a leading position in the energy transition," Takehiko Kakiuchi, CEO of Mitsubishi Corporation, said in a press statement.

Offshore wind is at the center of an existing collaboration between Eneco and Mitsubishi dating back to 2012. The two companies have jointly invested in a trio of offshore wind farms, all of them using MHI Vestas turbines, as well as in a 48-megawatt battery in Germany.

In a presentation used to introduce the consortium that was shared with GTM, Chubu and Mitsubishi pointed to five growth areas they will focus on with Eneco, including growing their renewable energy asset base and expanding the utility business to new territories.

The financial backing of Mitsubishi and Chubu will bolster Eneco's credit rating, making it more competitive in future offshore wind auctions, the companies said.

The next two years will see offshore wind auctions in the Netherlands, the U.K., Denmark, Belgium, France and Germany, with a total capacity of up to 9.5 gigawatts on offer. Poland is also preparing to pursue an 8-gigawatt offshore wind target by 2040.

The final shortlist of bidders for Eneco reportedly included private equity firm KKR and a joint bid from Shell and the Dutch pension fund PGGM.

Shell said its ambitions for growth in the power sector remain unchanged by the loss of the deal.

"We respect this outcome but are disappointed," said Maarten Wetselaar, director of Shell's integrated gas and new energies units. “We believe that together with PGGM we made a competitive bid for Eneco, including an attractive package of non-financial terms and long-term growth plans."

Eneco's current CEO, Ruud Sondag, will resign when the deal is finalized, to be replaced by an as-yet-unnamed Dutch CEO.

Comment on Will we discover when the Queen can be required to give evidence in court? – Robin Callender Smith by Tony Adler

 Cache
only royal to appear as a witness in Court in modern times was the Prince of Wales, heir of Queen Victoria , who became King Edward VII in 1903. He featured in two trials; the Mordaunt Case in 1870 and the Tranby Croft Affair in 1891 Lady Mordaunt was sued for divorce by her husband after confessing that she had taken several lovers among whom was the Prince of Wales. The royal heir was subpoenaed to appear as a witness when the case came to Court and his seven minute appearance culminated in a pretty direct question 'Has there been any immoral or criminal act been any between yourself and Lady Mordaunt ' .Predictably his response was 'There has not ' . It was claimed in Court that Lady Mordaunt was mentally ill and the Judge suspended the hearing until she regained her faculties. It was unclear whether her symptoms were genuine or faked but she ended up spending the remaining 30 years of her life in an asylum in Chiswick The second case concerned a house party at Tranby Croft , near Doncaster, where an army officer, Sir William Gordon-Cummings was accused of cheating at baccarat by five fellow players. The Prince of Wales , who was also in attendance, persuaded Gordon-Cummings to sign a confidential document admitting that he cheated and would never gamble again. However the existence of the document later became public knowledge and Gordon-Cummings sued the other five players for slander. The Prince was called as a witness when the case came to Court where he claimed that, as banker, he had not personally observed anything untoward. SIr William lost his action and spent the rest of his days as an outcast after being forced to resign his commission in the army. However the Prince did not come out of it well and Queen Victoria obliged her son to write a letter condemning gambling despite fact he was seen placing bets at Ascot on the last day of the Court case.! There was an implication in both cases the Prince could have used the royal prerogative to refuse to act as a witness and the issue of whether the monarch himself could be summoned as a witness came up soon after Edward VII's son succeeded him as George V in 1910. With the backing of Winston Churchill, then Home Secretary, the King took legal action against a Belgium born Republican, Edward Mylius , who had distributed a magazine in which the new King was accused of committing 'shameless bigamy and foully deserting his true wife' . It was alleged that he had married the future Queen Mary despite the fact he had already contracted a secret marriage in Malta with the daughter of an Admiral. But when Mylius stood trial for criminal libel at Old Bailey his demand for the presence of the King in the witness box on the grounds that that every accused person has the right to confront his accuser in Court was rejected by the Judge who simply stated 'You may take the law from me' This was taken as a precedent in 1937 when the prospect arose that the new King, Edward VIII, might be called as a witness in the divorce proceedings of Wallis Simpson. And the precedent was of particular relevance sixty- five years later because it enabled the Queen to effectively halt the trial of Paul Burrell for stealing Princess Diana's property in the knowledge that she would not have to appear in Court . Her Majesty's sudden recollection that she had allowed Burrell to keep certain papers belonging to the Princess was deemed to have fatally undermined the Prosecution case and the leading constitutional expert, Lord St John Of Fawsley , was clear that the Mylius case has established that the monarch could not be called as a witness. However the issue is still being debated and this year the Information Commissioner asked the CPS for the advice they gave during the Burrell case on whether the Queen could serve as a witness. It has not yet been forthcoming! I hope you find this of interest Tony Adler

Imaggeo on Mondays: Journey to Bolivia’s Laguna Negra

 Cache

This week’s featured photo showcases one of the most geologically diverse landscapes of South America: the Altiplano, the high plateau of the Andes. This plateau covers roughly 200,000 square kilometres in central South America, stretching from southern Peru to northern Argentina. The high-elevation plain sits between the eastern and western chains of the Central Andes and is home to a myriad of natural features, from vast bright-white salt flats and volcanic rocks to strikingly colorful lakes inhabited by flocks of flamingos. The place is also a hub for geoscientific research – such as studying the region’s unusually thick crust and extracting palaeoclimatic data from its alpine glaciers. It comes as no surprise then that many geoscientists even make the journey to this geologically interesting place during their down time. Katleen Wils, a researcher at Ghent University in Belgium, traveled on holiday to the Bolivian section of the Altiplano, spending three days in the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world. “We were amazed multiple times by the beautiful scenery!” said Wils. “We were definitely not alone on the saltpan itself, but once going into the mountains, it was mostly just our group. This allowed us to even more enjoy the quietness, the beautiful views and just sit and enjoy the moment.” On her trip, Wils had the chance to visit the Laguna Negra, which is highlighted in the photo above. Most of the lakes in the region are easily accessible from a car, but to get a glimpse of the scenic yet remote Laguna Negra, Wils explained that she and her group had to take a longer trek through the upland environment. “We had to walk over quite a distance along a riverbed, crossing all kinds of bird species, surrounded by the volcanic rocks in the area. As there was still some water present in the bed, it involved quite a lot of jumping over smaller flows, making sure our feet didn’t sink into the mud, and finding the best way to cross without getting our feet wet.” Their efforts were rewarded with a beautiful viewpoint of the lake, enclosed by jutting red rocks. “The fact that we had to walk to get there, made it even more idyllic, as it was a really remote location where it was just us. We sat there for at least an hour, I think, taking up the landscape,” said Wils. “For me, this is the best thing to unwind, I can just forget all of my thoughts and feel completely relaxed in the beauty of nature. That’s my idea of an ideal vacation!” By Olivia Trani, EGU Communications Officer Imaggeo is the EGU’s online open access geosciences image repository. All geoscientists (and others) can submit their photographs and videos to this repository and, since it is open access, these images can be used for free by scientists for their presentations or publications, by educators and the general public, and some images can even be used freely for commercial purposes. Who will emerge victorious?

After a few weeks of intense competition and matches we finally have the last two remaining nations, France against Argentina in the final!

These two are going to play against each other next Sunday (December 8th 22:00 CET) for the NationsCup XXII title. (Bare in mind the date and time could change but you will find information about that in the Community Discord) This match is going to be decided by the majority winner of best of 5 maps.

Both teams have shown amazing teamwork and strength over the past little while so it's set to be one of those matches you don't want to miss out on!
While France have played a lot of Capture The Flag, they've proved their dominance in that game-mode over and over again. The Girl in the Lion Cage: Regulating Hypnotism in Nineteenth Century France

 Cache
NLM History of Medicine

In 1890 in the southern French town of Beziers, a ”carnival hypnotizer” put a sleeping young girl, one “Miss Sperling,” in a lion’s cage, in an effort to demonstrate how profound – and authentic – her hypnotic trance was. The awe of the assembled crowd soon turned to horror, however, as the lion seized “Miss Sperling” in its jaws, parading her around the cage. The victim was eventually extracted and taken to the hospital but soon died from the injuries she sustained. This incident was just one of a number of stories circulating in the French press in the late nineteenth century that vividly demonstrated the dangers of the popular hypnotism shows that captivated audiences across the European continent. Doctors seized on such episodes to argue that the practice of hypnotism should be limited to medical professionals who alone could be trusted with the power to control the minds of others. In some European nations—Belgium and Switzerland, for example, and in some Italian towns—their efforts were successful. In France, however, despite the urging of the powerful neurologist and psychologist Jean-Martin Charcot, efforts to regulate popular hypnotism failed. This paper, based largely on French nineteenth century medical journals and the writings of Charcot, explores the debates surrounding popular hypnotism. It argues that the failure to regulate the practice in late nineteenth-century France reveals conflicts over the authority of professional medicine, the changing role of women, and deep cultural anxiety about the power of the unconscious mind.

The staggering amount of wealth held by the Forbes 400 more than doubled over the last decade. But their tax rates actually dropped.

  • The share of wealth held by the Forbes 400 more than doubled from $1.27 trillion in 2009 to nearly $3 trillion this year.
  • That marks a significant increase encouraged by a combination of sliding tax rates, stock market growth, and the economic recovery, according to Gabriel Zucman, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley.
  • Zucman, an economist who has consulted with the Warren and Sanders campaigns, noted the staggering amount of wealth that the richest 400 US citizens — or roughly 0.00025% of the American population — built up over the last decade.

The share of wealth held by the Forbes 400 more than doubled from $1.27 trillion in 2009 to nearly $3 trillion this year. That marks a significant increase encouraged by a combination of sliding tax rates, stock market growth, and the economic recovery, according to Gabriel Zucman, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley.

Zucman, an economist who has consulted with the Warren and Sanders campaigns, noted the staggering amount of wealth that the richest 400 US citizens — or roughly 0.00025% of the American population — has built up over the last decade in a Sunday tweet.

The amount of taxable income for the wealthiest group of US citizens dropped from 27% in 2009 to around 23% this year, the first time they were effectively taxed lower than the nation's working class, Business Insider reported last month.

The drop reflected changes in federal income tax as well as state and local levies, but particularly corporate taxes, Zucman said in an email to Business Insider.

trump tax bill

A blend of factors which included the rapid growth of the stock market, the nation's economic recovery after the Great Recession, the unfettered growth of large corporations, and declining tax rates fostered a favorable environment for a surge in the wealth held by the Forbes 400, Zucman said.

Meanwhile, the tax rate that the bottom 50% of American taxpayers pay hasn't budged much over time.

Zucman and Emmanuel Saez — another economist at the University of California he's partnered with — have argued that the relatively small tax burdens of the wealthy are the product of decisions made by American lawmakers, whether directly or through congressional gridlock. Tax avoidance has also become more common.

Congress has cut taxes on capital gains and estates over the years. And the top income tax rates were slashed six times since 1980, some with the support of Democrats, The Washington Post reported. In 2010, President Obama delayed ending the George W. Bush tax cuts by two years, and Congress allowed it to expire in 2013.

President Trump's 2017 Republican tax cuts largely benefited wealthy citizens and corporations, experts say. They axed the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, while also reducing the top rates for individuals.

Many economists say that decades of income tax cuts in particular have led to the increasing concentration of wealth atop the economic pyramid and contributed to the accelerating inequality within US society, now at a record high according to the Census Bureau.

Why Leclerc must be prioritised at Ferrari

 Cache
LeClerc in Singapore
Ferrari pit strategy cost pole winner LeClerc in Singapore
Monégasque youngster has more to give than his older teammate Vettel - it's time for Ferrari to recognise this

If things had worked out a little differently, Charles Leclerc could be taking Lewis Hamilton down to the wire in Abu Dhabi. In his first season at Ferrari, Leclerc has taken seven pole positions to Valtteri Bottas’s five, Hamilton’s four and Sebastian Vettel’s two.

He could and should have won race two in Bahrain, where the car let him down. In Monaco he was quickest in final practice but Ferrari banjaxed his race by not sending him out for a second Q1 run, which left him qualifying only 16th.

In Azerbaijan he was the stand-out before crashing in Q2 when Ferrari needlessly tried to get him through on a harder tyre. In Austria he took pole but was kept on the leash in the opening stint to maximise tyre life, which ultimately allowed Max Verstappen to pass him with two laps to go.

In Germany he had the car to win but, in keeping with others, Hamilton included, skated off on a treacherous surface. Belgium and Italy he won brilliantly, back-to-back. It should have been a hat-trick in Singapore where he started from pole and led, until Ferrari accidentally leap-frogged him with Vettel by stopping the four-time champion first to undercut Hamilton. And then failed to order a position reversal.

A week later, another win went west in Russia when Leclerc followed a pre-race plan to tow Vettel into the lead but Sebastian reneged on the deal to allow him back in front. A Virtual Safety Car period then handed Mercedes cheap pitstops and a one-two ahead of Charles.

Leclerc himself torpedoed a decent chance in Japan when the arrival of arch-rival Verstappen around his outside at Turn 1 prompted a red mist moment. Then, arguably conservative Ferrari strategy cost Leclerc in Mexico. Right there, 10 races Leclerc could have won from the first 19, instead of the two he actually claimed.

The pace is clearly there, and that’s Ferrari’s problem. Vettel is the senior statesman, a good guy, intelligent, with a wry sense of humour and a fine ambassador for the sport. He’s hard not to like.

But Eddie Irvine always told it like it is and has done so recently in an interview with an online gambling company. Vettel, Irvine says, is not a worthy four-time champion. He’s good but mistake-ridden. And Eddie doesn’t think he’s super-quick either, claiming that we saw that when he was bested by Daniel Ricciardo in 2014, and are seeing it again.

There were times this year when Vettel has not been sacrificed because of his status and Ferrari has lost races because of it. The intra-team rivalry had flashpoints in Monza, Singapore and Sochi and is becoming a problem. Team principal Mattia Binotto calls the ‘problem’ a luxury. But it’s one he could do without.

At the start of the season Ferrari announced that it would start off prioritising Vettel. It’s now time they did the reverse. The timing screen, ultimately, decides a team’s number one.

By design or coincidence?

Ferrari’s lacklustre performance in the US Grand Prix, after being bang on the pace ever since F1’s August break, prompted much muttering and speculation in the days and weeks that followed the Austin race.

Ferrari’s power unit has given the red cars a straightline speed advantage all season but, after a poor display at Budapest in August, Ferrari took a run of six straight pole positions only halted by Mercedes in the USA.

The Ferrari speed advantage has always been much more prevalent in qualifying than in races but, in Austin, Charles Leclerc finished more than 50sec behind the winning Mercedes, just as Ferrari had done in Budapest. It happened just a day after the FIA issued a Technical Directive (TD).

An intrinsic part of F1 is looking for exploitable loopholes in the regulations. If a team believes it has found one, it may seek to clear it with the FIA. The FIA will then pass an opinion that such a thing is legal, or refuse it. If it’s the latter, a TD is issued to all teams telling them of the inquiry and the reasons that it has been denied.

Prior to the US GP, Red Bull asked the FIA whether it would be okay to use electrical pulses to interfere with the FIA’s fuel flow device. The maximum fuel flow rate could be exceeded between measuring points so long as the average flow rate was within the regulations. That could give a power advantage and would fit with a scenario where this was witnessed over a shorter distance (a qualifying lap) but not significantly over a longer one (a race distance).

The FIA’s TD said that no, this would not be okay, and cited article 3.10.5, which says: “Any device, system or procedure the purpose and/or effect of which is to increase the flow rate or to store and recycle fuel after the measurement point, is prohibited.”

Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari retired early in the US with a suspension problem and team principal Mattia Binotto said that Leclerc’s performance was compromised by having to revert to a previous, less powerful engine specification after a problem in practice, allied to tyre issues in the opening stint. Ferrari’s rivals – surprise, surprise – thought otherwise.

Social Media Gives Young Climate Activists A Platform – It Also Brings Out The Trolls

 Cache
Social media is a critical tool for climate activists.

You would think the right-wing conspiracy theorists upset Jamie Margolin the most. For the last three years, the 17-year-old climate activist from Seattle has been tirelessly campaigning, marching and lobbying to draw attention to the climate emergency, earning herself over 50,000 social media followers along the way.

You would think she is most hurt when hateful Trump-supporters use online platforms to criticize Zero Hour, the youth activist organization she founded, or send her death threats, or call her a “bitch.” But in reality, Margolin says the worst thing about being a young climate activist with a social media presence isn’t dealing with trolls — it’s the people who are supposed to be on your side.

“People try to find things wrong with you because there’s this social media culture of performative wokeness, where it’s like, ‘Who can be the least problematic of all time?’” said Margolin, explaining that commenters will criticize her for driving to events.

“It’s so toxic and it’s anxiety-provoking, but it’s also like they lose sight of who the real enemy is and they attack their own for not being the most pure and perfect … It’s like, come on, yeah, I exhale carbon dioxide too, do you want to arrest me for that?”

Since the Arab Spring protests in the early 2010s, it has been widely accepted that social media is an invaluable tool for activists. While terms like “hashtag activism” and “clicktivism” mock the potential of social media campaigns, the last decade has seen a flurry of revolutionary activity take place online. Movements like #MeToo to #BlackLivesMatter allowed marginalized people to make their voices heard, while 2018’s #MarchForOurLives saw teenage survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting organize an unprecedented gun control rally.

For young climate activists like Margolin, social media is undoubtedly a critical tool. Earlier this year, I met with 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, the original climate striker who has since inspired millions of young people to skip school to attend protests around the world as part of the #FridaysForFuture movement. She admitted that “without social media, I don’t think it would have worked.”

Thunberg first drew attention to her solitary protest outside the Swedish Parliament via Instagram and Twitter posts. After they went viral, more and more children joined her movement, and she now has over 11 million followers across social media. But Thunberg also acknowledged there are limitations when a movement plays out online. “If all the people who followed me on social media did something, then the world would look very different,” she said.

Online life can be a double-edged sword for young climate activists, who benefit from the reach and community offered by the internet but must also face trolls and death threats. Many of them also struggle with the additional challenge of being female online in misogynistic spaces. It’s hard for anyone — never mind a teenager with all the particular pressures that stage of life brings — to navigate this kind of global exposure and the bullies that come as a package deal.

People try to find things wrong with you because there’s this social media culture of performative wokeness ... It’s so toxic and it’s anxiety-provoking.Jamie Margolin

Margolin first began using social media to spread her message at the end of 2016. “I didn’t have very many followers … so I posted what I wanted to, and I didn’t feel as restricted and anxious about it as I do now,” she said.

The internet was absolutely pivotal in the teenager’s journey — she founded her coalition Zero Hour with other young people she met on Instagram and later used the platform to organize the Youth Climate Action March that took place in Washington, D.C., in June 2018. After the march, Margolin began to rapidly gain followers online.

“It feels good, obviously, that sort of validation, and the eyes on you, it makes you think you can do so much more and spread the message to so many people,” she said. “So initially it’s a pretty good thing, but the thing with social media is it never feels like enough.”

Just like any other teenager, Margolin feels the pressure to get an ever-increasing number of likes and comments on her posts. When she doesn’t get enough engagement, “a tiny voice” in her head questions whether she “wasn’t that good” or “people don’t care,” but she says she tries to block those voices out.

Margolin says the most impactful moments in her activism often don’t resonate on the internet. “Social media makes you feel like success is the amount of likes and retweets, where in reality I can get likes and retweets for something that’s just a statement or a picture of myself, but a picture of a really important meeting I had or off-camera things that people are never gonna see are way, way, way more important,” she explained.

The activist constantly reminds herself that social media is not a marker of her success, and says some of her climate activist heroes are “bad” at using the internet but are the people doing “the real work.”

She also says Indigenous activists and people of color receive less attention and praise for their climate work despite their tireless efforts. Success on social media can often rely on privilege; Thunberg first gained attention when her mother, famous opera singer Malena Ernman, shared her posts on Twitter.

Greta Thunberg, left, talks to Jamie Margolin, right, during a joint hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Europe, Eurasia, Energy and the Environment Subcommittee, and the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Young climate activists hoping to make a splash online can also face one crucial, somewhat simplistic-sounding barrier: social media age restrictions.

Genesis Butler is a 12-year-old animal rights activist from California who advocates veganism for ethical and environmental reasons. This February, her Instagram account was temporarily shut down because the platform’s terms of service say users must be at least 13 years old. “I think that kids should [be allowed to use] social media,” Butler said. “We all have a voice, and we all should use it, and this is really the time where kids can make an impact on the planet.”

Butler’s Instagram page has since been reinstated after her family clarified that her mother controls the account. “I think social media is very important because by doing one post you could reach so many people and make such an impact,” Butler said. “It’s important because you’re raising awareness by doing so little.”

Genesis Butler is a 12-year-old animal rights activist from California.

Graham Meikle, a professor at Westminster School of Media and Communication in the U.K., says one of the best and worst things about social media is that it lets “people make themselves and their views visible to others who become visible to them in turn.”

Meikle says the last decade has proved the power of the hashtag as a call to action (#OccupyWallStreet), a personal declaration (#IllRideWithYou), and even a demonstration of empathy (#JeSuisCharlie). He argues that regardless of the outcome, getting young activists’ voices heard is itself a marker of success. Change often happens locally first, “so we shouldn’t imagine that social media campaigns somehow don’t work just because large global hashtags don’t always lead to an outcome that we can see,” he said.

Meikle notes that it is the personal element inherent to social media that allows messages to spread so quickly — he says the Parkland survivors personified an issue that would otherwise feel overwhelmingly large. Margolin, who also helps run the official Zero Hour social media accounts, has learned firsthand that personal posts often resonate most. Even though her personal account has fewer followers than the main account, posts there get far more engagement, she said.

This is a lot of pressure for a young activist — Margolin used the word “anxiety” four times over the course of our 20-minute conversation. Kehkashan Basu, the 19-year-old founder of the Green Hope Foundation, a youth organization that runs conferences and workshops to educate children and adults about sustainable development and undertakes projects such as tree planting initiatives, says her cyberbullying started when she first spoke out about climate at age 10.

“Anonymous messages, malicious content and even threats of physical abuse were hurled at me to derail my work,” the teen based in Dubai said. She later discovered that the father of a girl from her school was sending her hateful messages.

Kehkashan Basu received the International Children's Peace Prize in 2016 for the work done by her child-run organization Green Hope.

While there are many young male climate activists, academics have found that American climate strikers are overwhelmingly female, and the global faces of the movement are also young women. Studies show that nearly one-quarter of women have experienced online abuse at least once, and women are twice as likely as men to be targeted online because of their gender.

Thunberg has been targeted by trolls on multiple occasions. Many of these detractors aren’t just anonymous basement-dwellers: Young activists face criticism from powerful older men. This includes a Fox pundit who called Thunberg a “mentally ill Swedish child” (a comment Fox later apologized for) as well as the president of the United States, who downplayed Thunberg’s concerns by sarcastically saying she looked like a “very happy young girl.”

In the face of cyberbullying and the psychological pressure of being the figurehead of a movement, some activists are simply logging off. When I tried contacting Anuna De Wever, the 18-year-old leader of the school strike movement in Belgium, I am met with an-out-of-office-like email:

“I’m sailing the Atlantic Ocean to change the world. My boat has no Wifi connection and neither does the amazon forest where I am invited after setting foot in Brasil… In any case I’ll be offline for very long.”

Basu, however, is glad she stayed online. She says that once she posted openly about the hate messages, they began to die down — she believes that acknowledging the hate openly “scares away the bullies.”

When asked about the time she got the best response on social media, Basu cites Green Hope’s first global Twitter campaign on mangrove conservation. “During the one hour span of the discussion, Twitter analytics showed that we influenced over 35,000 people which was truly amazing… I was absolutely elated,” she said.

In a nutshell, this is why young activists continue to share their messages online. Not only can teens reach an unprecedented number of people, but their work can have a direct effect on the political landscape. In February, an environment minister in Belgium, Joke Schauvliege, was forced to resign after she called children’s climate strikes “a setup.” In her apology, she said she overreacted because of criticism she had faced on social media

Young strikers have undoubtedly raised awareness about the climate crisis; the global children’s climate strike in March was covered all around the world after 1.4 million children skipped school, and in September, #ClimateStrike topped Twitter trends worldwide after week-long international strikes.

We all have a voice, and we all should use it, and this is really the time where kids can make an impact on the planet.Genesis Butler

A 2018 report from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication found that Americans are increasingly certain that global warming is happening, but just over half accept that it is human-caused. Meanwhile, 65% of people say they rarely talk about the issue.

This is where the youth climate activists’ social media power can help. A 2017 paper from Dr. Ashley Anderson, a scientific communications professor at Colorado State University, found that “personalization” is key to making climate change less abstract in the public mind, and Anderson argued that social media is inherently personal. While more research is needed to determine whether people’s minds are changing because of social media, it is clear that young climate activists are able to get people of all ages talking. Children have now gone beyond raising awareness of the climate crisis: They now make it impossible to ignore.

It’s this kind of impact that means logging off isn’t an option for Margolin, though she sometimes takes short social media breaks. “We can spread the message through social media, but there’s only so much that a few ones and zeros are going to do to change things,” she said when asked about the limitations of social media. “You have to actually go out there and make a real change in your community.”

And Margolin is making that change. Shifting beyond social media, she is taking her message on a #ClimateTour around America, giving talks and promoting her new book “Youth to Power: Your Voice and How to Use It,” out next summer.

Despite homework and impending exams, the teenager remains dedicated to using her voice to urge politicians to take action on the climate crisis. “In those moments where I do take a social media break, it’s really, really helpful,” she said. “It reminds you what really matters.”

New opening - Craft Company: Akebonobashi

 Cache
This neighborhood craft-beer bar serves mostly imported beers on draft from twelve taps, along with a "bistro-style" food menu of small dishes. Beers are relatively exotic and diverse - on a recent visit we found brews from Edge Brewing (Spain), Saltaire, Anarchy Brew and Twisted Barrel Ale (UK), Malheur (Belgium) and Georgetown Brewing (Washington State). They're just a bit higher-priced than average (medium-size glasses are Y1100-1200), but there's no table charge.

Seating is on high stools at three long communal tables (turning into six smaller tables at lunch), and there's ample standing room along the room's wrap-around counter. At lunchtime they serve voluminous plates featuring Lu Rou Fan (Taiwanese minced pork and rice) paired with chicken karaage or Hayashi Rice, starting at Y1000.
