Manufacturing companies can benefit greatly from bringing order to their vendor data to capture the significant potential for better decision making and quicker time-to-market.But first, I want to explain in what sense I use the word vendor here.The what and why of vendor data are relevant questions because vendor data is often used synonymously with supplier data. This is not surprising as the common definition of a vendor is: "the crediting business partner of an organization". According to this definition, an organization would purchase goods and services from a vendor. Many ERP systems adhere to this definition, keeping information about the "vendors" that "supply" an enterprise in a vendor master database.However, from a supply chain and master data perspective, you could argue for treating “supplier” and “vendor” separately.Vendor or supplierIn fact, for manufacturers, the terms "supplier" and "vendor" can be said to refer to two different relationships to the business they are dealing with at opposite ends of the supply chain.If you are a manufacturer of consumer-packaged goods (CPG), your supplier would be the businesspartner providing you with ingredients or semi-finished products that you require for your manufacturing process. Your vendors, on the other hand, would be retailers, distributors or wholesalers, who sell the finished products to end-consumers.• The supplier comes first in the supply chain and the vendor comes last• The supplier is B2B, the vendor is typically B2C• The supplier mostly deals with bulk quantities aimed at resale, vendors with small quantities aimed at consumption• The supplier deals with farmers and raw materials, the vendor deals with end-consumers.Drawing attention to these differences is not an attempt to be hairsplitting about the use of words, but instead to underline the different business processes associated with two different data domains.I will make this distinction in the following when referring to vendor data.Why you need trustworthy vendor dataWith good vendor data, you are one step closer to achieving data transparency across the supply chain.Having solid vendor data is also important because, from a manufacturer’s viewpoint, vendors are your customers and your sales channels. Your vendor data must be correct and updated because it enables you to:• Secure correct billing and prevent fraudulent transactions• Provide you with a 360° view and help you to negotiate better deals• Quickly upscale and expand with new vendors• Achieve compliance with vendor and end-consumer demands• Adjust production and the number of SKUsManufacturers would benefit greatly from achieving a consolidated view of their vendors (distributors, retailers and wholesalers), which are their customers and business partners. The ecosystem of vendor data often spreads across several siloed operating companies, divisions and ERPs. Consolidating vendor data ideally includes developing a clear, shared customer hierarchy, logical classifications and information enrichment across disparate systems. A single source of vendor data enables downstream analytical processes for trustworthy reporting and improved decision making.Having access to a 360° view of their vendors, organizations would be able to allocate resources at the right time with the right vendor (customer) for the right reasons. They would be able to perform segmentations, resource assignments and trade assessments based on true and trusted insights.• Manufacturers need to understand exactly who they are selling to in order to mitigate risks and assess the customer value.• They must view and organize their customers and business partners for analytical purposes.• They must optimize their trade spend and promotions which means engaging with the right business partner for the right product at the right time.But for that to happen, they must manage and understand the complex interactions across business partner functions. Essentially, they need data visibility across master data domains, e.g., corporate relationships, party-to-party relationships, product-to-vendor, customer-to-location etc.The vendor landscape is highly complex and amasses dataThe vendor landscape is often incredibly complex. Large retailers’ sales structures consist of multiple lines of businesses, locations, territories, divisions, operating companies and sales channels. As a result of that, manufacturers must engage in different business processes and systems depending on the type of interactions with their vendors and even on the type of product purchased.This complexity of how vendors are organized and how they operate generate a massive amount of vendor master data to be managed. A high data quality and accessibility would enable the manufacturer to streamline their vendor-related processes, distribute work more efficiently and monitor the progress.Eventually, manufacturers will be able to:• Deliver orders at required speed• Optimize their end-to-end processes• Provide data transparency• Reduce costs and risks• Improve invoicing and logistics• Plan strategically with more confidenceVendor data is a sub-category of customer data that has different attributes than end-consumers. Vendor data can also include ledger data in as far as accounts and contracts are important attributes. In addition, location data plays a big role in the vendor data model because of the importance of logistics. This includes warehouses, distribution centers, routes and packaging data.Management of vendor data – forget ERPVendor data is often managed differently across different instances of ERP systems of a single enterprise. Not only can ERPs become silos of data, impeding collaboration, they are also designed to manage data for specific purposes such as price management and invoicing.But manufacturers have to be able to perform a multitude of tasks related to their vendor data to drive deeper insights than what traditional ERPs allow. This includes:Data cleansingHaving inaccurate and duplicated data that resides in disparate systems provides a siloed view of business partners. It slows down operational efficiency and makes managing the vendor ecosystem difficult and often more costly.AnalyticsReporting derived from duplicate and unconnected data makes it difficult to segment your customer base correctly, assess values and risks and ultimately to understand exactly who you are selling to. Being able to trust your analytics data reduces the amount of returned products and enables you to allocate your resources more efficiently.Separating operationsNot everyone needs all the data. It actually makes sense to decouple sales from other operations such as creating new retail stores for a specific retail chain. This process is driven by an operations specialist who does not necessarily need insight into invoicing and the distribution of goods. The operations specialist needs to set up a framework of location and finance master data for which the ERP does not provide the best tools.What you need to achieve a high data quality and the business benefits of a 360° vendor view is a single, centralized master data management (MDM) solution that can gather vendor data from multiple sources and data pools and create trusted data.You also need a proper data governance strategy that includes monitoring, controlling and maintaining master data.A vendor-based MDM solution provides opportunities that expand beyond ERP capabilities and lets you:• Leverage workflow-based monitoring, data-quality policies, reporting, dashboards and KPIs• Facilitate onboarding and sharing master data across the enterprise• Identify and visualize hierarchies and relationships• Ensure master data is fit for purpose through data verification and enrichment services• Enable centralized authoring of vendor data driven by an efficient governance model• Streamline vendor onboarding, compliance, as well as credit and legal risk assessmentTo further increase the data quality of your vendor records, you can integrate your MDM solution with third-party sources and data providers such as Dun & Bradstreet, Experian and Loqate.Connecting first-party data with Dun & Bradstreet can help you build robust customer profiles and gain a clearer view of customers and vendors. Use Experian to validate email-addresses and Loqate for address verification.For manufacturers, it makes sense to treat suppliers and vendors as two separate data domains and to increase the focus on vendor data management given the complexity of the vendor landscape and the importance of controlling the processes.For retailers it would be equally important to manage suppliers and supplier data, but that’s a different story.Jignesh Patel is Director of Product Strategy for Customer MDM at Stibo Systems.

How It Started

Mollie Parnis Livingston, one of America’s first fashion designers known by name, established the Livingston Awards in 1981 to honor her son, Robert, who published the journalism review More.

Mollie loved the top young talent in the fashion business, and gathered them around her, a practice she later extended to journalists. To her delight, she realized that the awards were creating a journalistic “family” of considerable and growing distinction. Her prizes for young journalists recognized talent early and encouraged quality journalism—something both Mollie and her son Robert cared deeply about.

Richard Clurman, former Chief of Correspondents for Time-Life News Service, conceived of the awards with Mollie, and brought aboard Charles Eisendrath to design and implement the prize.

Getting Started using NucliOS IGChartView with Xamarin.iOS

 Cache

Once upon a time, I wrote a post called “Getting Started using NucliOS with Xamarin.iOS Part 1: IGChartView”. It was a decent post and many people have told me they found it helpful. Unfortunately, I hosted all of the images for the post on a server that no longer exists and now the post is littered with broken images and a project download link that no longer works. That’s not very helpful so hopefully this post will fill that void. This post will help you get started with the Xamarin bindings for Infragistics NucliOS IGChartView.

nuclios-xamarin<

Using IGChartView with Xamarin.iOS

IGChartView is a data visualization control that creates a graphical representation of the user’s data. It is designed to display high amounts of data and can handle constant data updates. It supports a variety of different series types including Area, Bar, Column, etc. For this Getting Started tutorial I’ll use the Area series. The finished application will look like this:

final

The data is populated using 100 random data points with values between 5.0 and 45.0. When the Refresh button is tapped, the data will be regenerated and the data points will smoothly animate to their new locations. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Creating the project

Start by creating a Single View iPhone Storyboard application by clicking on “Start new solution…” and configure the project as shown in the following screenshot:

project_creation

We will customize the storyboard file that is created to utilize a Navigation Controller instead of the basic controller that we are given.

Step 2: Customizing the storyboard

We could do this next step in code, but I wanted to briefly touch on the interface builder portion of the Xamarin.iOS workflow since I feel like it is a good fit for this kind of task and keeps your code a bit cleaner. Start by double-clicking the “MainStoryboard.storyboard” file. This will open the interface file in Xcode. Select the View Controller that is initially in the storyboard. If properly selected, it should look like this:

select_vc_to_delete

Press Delete to remove this view controller. After deleting the view controller, use the Library in the bottom right of Xcode to search for the Navigation Controller as shown here:

library_nav

Drag a Navigation Controller object onto the storyboard. The result should look like this:

dragged_out_navigation_controller

Next, delete the “Root View Controller” that was created with the Navigation Controller. We will replace this with our own View Controller. Use the Library to find the View Controller object and drag one onto the storyboard next to the Navigation Controller. The result should look like this:

viewcontroller_added_xcode

Now, hold down Control and drag from the Navigation Controller to the newly created View Controller. Your screen should look like this if you’re doing it right:

control_drag_connection

In the resulting popover, select “root view” under “Relationship Segue”.

root_view

Double-click on the empty middle portion of the Navigation Bar and type to change the title to “NucliOS Simple Chart”. Using the Library panel, search for “Bar Button Item” and drag one to the right-hand side of the Navigation Bar. The result should look like this:

navbar_setup

Next, select the View Controller and go to the “Identity inspector” and set the “Class” property to ChartViewController. Doing this will generate a C# class in Xamarin Studio when we switch back. If you’ve done it correctly (it should look like the image below), save the storyboard and switch over to Xamarin Studio to synchronize the changes we’ve made so far.

name_the_viewcontroller

Once synchronized, double-click the “MainStoryboard.storyboard” file again to head back to Xcode. Click on the Bar Button Item we added (it should currently say “Item”) and change the “Identifier” to “Refresh” to make the button look like a traditional refresh button. Now we need to add an outlet to the view controller which will allow us to access the refresh button from code back in our Xamarin.iOS project. Start by selecting the Assistant editor from the Editor picker at the top right of the IDE (it looks like this):

assistant_editor

This will put Xcode into a split screen mode where the left-hand side of the screen is the interface and the right-hand side is the code related to the interface, in this case the view controller. Make sure the “ChartViewController.h” file is loaded in the Assistant Editor. Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and left-drag from the refresh button to the code file on the right and drop when the line is below the set of curly braces:

create_outlet_drag

Configure the resulting popover like this and click “Connect”:

outlet_popover

This will add an outlet to the Xcode project that will be automatically picked up by the Xamarin.iOS project when it is saved. Click the interface file on the left and save the file. Then click the code file on the right and save it. Switch back to Xamarin Studio and the changes will be picked up automatically.

We are ready to add our chart.

Step 3: Adding and configuring the IGChartView

The first thing we need to do is add a reference to the IGChartView.dll which is found in /Developer/Infragistics/NuCLiOS 2013 Volume 2/MonoTouch on your machine. To do this, right-click on References and chose “Edit references…”. Go to the .NET Assembly tab and navigate to the IGChartView.dll as shown here and add it by double-clicking it and then clicking “Ok”:

references

Now open the “ChartViewController.cs” file and add the using statement for Infragistics:

using Infragistics;
using MonoTouch.ObjCRuntime;

Add the following property declarations to the ChartViewController class:

public IGChartView Chart { get; set; }
public NSObject[] Data { get; set; }
public IGCategorySeriesDataSourceHelper Source { get; set; }
public int TotalItems { get; set; }
public Random NumberGenerator { get; set; }

The Data array will hold 100 random numbers between 5.0 and 45.0 and the Source object will make that data consumable by the IGChartView. In the constructor, initialize the variables and add & call the PopulateData function to get our data set up:

public ChartViewController (IntPtr handle) : base (handle)
{
    this.Data = new NSObject[100];
    this.NumberGenerator = new Random (1337);
    this.Source = new IGCategorySeriesDataSourceHelper ();
    this.PopulateData (100);
}

void PopulateData (int totalItems)
{
    double previousValue = -1;
    this.TotalItems = totalItems;
    this.Data.Initialize();
    for (int i = 0; i < totalItems; i++)
    {
        double value = 0;
        if (previousValue == -1)
        {
            value = this.NumberGenerator.NextDouble() * 40.0 + 5.0;
        }
        else
        {
            value = RandomBetween(previousValue - 2.0, previousValue + 2.0);
            if (value < 5.0)
                value = 5.0;
            if (value > 40.0)
                value = 40.0;
        }
        previousValue = value;
        Data[i] = new NSNumber(value);
    }

    Source.Values = Data;
}

double RandomBetween(double small, double large)
{
    double difference = large - small;
    return this.NumberGenerator.NextDouble() * difference + small;
}

The PopulateData(int totalItems) method creates a set of randomized data that we will visualize using our chart. Each value is added to the Data array and once the Data array is full it is stored in the Source.Values property. Next, we will add code to the ViewDidLoad() method that is called when our view controller loads onto the screen. Underneath the call to base.ViewDidLoad(); add the following code:

// For iOS 7 we want to make sure we don't go under the Navigation Bar
this.EdgesForExtendedLayout = UIRectEdge.None;

// Set it up to fill...
this.Chart = new IGChartView (this.View.Bounds);
this.Chart.AutoresizingMask = UIViewAutoresizing.FlexibleHeight | UIViewAutoresizing.FlexibleWidth;

// Set the theme
this.Chart.Theme = IGChartDefaultThemes.IGTheme();

// Add the chart to the View Controller's View
this.View.AddSubview(this.Chart);

This code creates a new chart that fills the area underneath the Navigation Bar that will stretch in both the height and width such that it will work on all sizes of iPhones in all orientations. The chart theme is set to IGTheme. Next, add the following code which will set up the series that will be displayed in the chart:

var seriesType = new Class(typeof(IGAreaSeries));
var seriesName = "areaSeries";
var xAxisName = "xAxis";
var yAxisName = "yAxis";

IGAreaSeries areaSeries =
    (IGAreaSeries)this.Chart.AddSeries(seriesType, seriesName, Source, xAxisName, yAxisName);

areaSeries.XAxis.LabelsVisible = false;
areaSeries.YAxis.Minimum = 0;
areaSeries.YAxis.Maximum = 45;
areaSeries.TransitionDuration = 1;

The first four lines set up the series type (area in this case), the name for the series, and the names for the x and y axes. The next line adds a new series to the chart that is configured using the variables we set up in the first four lines. Then, we configure the axis labels and minimums and maximums. The transition duration controls how long animations will last when switching between old and new values. These will be triggered using the refresh button. When tapped, the refresh button will generate a new set of data which the chart will switch to. Add the code for the refresh button right after the transition duration:

this.RefreshButton.Clicked += (object sender, EventArgs e) => {
    double previousValue = -1;
    for (int i = 0; i < this.TotalItems; i++)
    {
        double value = 0;
        if (previousValue == -1)
        {
            value = this.NumberGenerator.NextDouble() * 40.0 + 5.0;
        }
        else
        {
            value = RandomBetween(previousValue - 2.0, previousValue + 2.0);
            if (value < 5.0)
                value = 5.0;
            if (value > 40.0)
                value = 40.0;
        }
        previousValue = value;

        Data[i] = new NSNumber(value);
        Chart.ReplaceItem(i, Source);
    }
    Source.Values = Data;
};

This code hooks up the Clicked event for the RefreshButton which will replace each element in the Data array with a new random value and then updates the Source that the chart is displaying. The chart will then animate to the new values. At this point the application should be complete so build and run it!

If You're Going to Design Something New, Useful and Desirable, Please Make It Out of Recycled Aluminum Cans

 Cache

Pop quiz: Which is better for the environment, plastic bottles, or aluminum cans?

Aluminum cans are, of course. But that doesn't mean they're all good; the details can get a little complicated. To start off, let's look at this data visualization of how many aluminum cans us Earthlings go through in one year:

(Note: The creator of the video, MetaBall Studios, cites their data sources as The World Counts and Web Packaging.)

So at press time we were at roughly 178 billions cans used this year, on our way to 200 billion by year's end.

The bad news is, those cans are a bitch to produce, at least from the planet's perspective. The bauxite mining required to produce aluminum "is harsh on the planet…leaving environmental destruction behind," Earth911 reports. "Bauxite mining contributes to habitat loss and water contamination, as well as a slew of other negative environmental impacts, like increased erosion."

The good news is, you can recycle the shit out of aluminum. As in, you can recycle it over and over again, infinitely, unlike plastics, which have a limited amount of times they can be recycled, depending on which type.

The bad news is, at this point we're only recycling about half of our aluminum cans. (Sciencing.com says 50%; Recycle Nation says 55%. Whatever the case, it appears to be growing--in author Annie Leonard's The Story of Stuff: The Impact of Overconsumption on the Planet, Our Communities, and Our Health-And How We Can Make It Better, which was written in 2011, Leonard states that we were recycling 45%.)

The good news is, if we're producing 200 billion cans a year and only recycling half of them, that means there's 100 billion cans' worth of raw material just waiting to be used. And if there's demand for that product, there will be demand to recycle more of the cans. So if you're a designer with the power to spec that out, spec that out!
