6 November 2019 --( ASIA TODAY )-- Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association (HKOMA), the 27th edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Optical Fair opened today and runs until 8 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). This year’s fair welcomes 810 exhibitors from 18 countries and regions to showcase the latest design trends and eyewear products.

“As a major production centre and exporter in the global optical industry, the value of Hong Kong’s total optical exports in the first nine months of this year exceeded HK$15.3 billion, which was on a par with last year,” said HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau. “An emphasis on design, technology and quality management continue to bring success to Hong Kong eyewear companies in an increasingly competitive world. The Hong Kong International Optical Fair provides an important one-stop marketing and sourcing platform for the industry.”

Mr Chau noted that the HKTDC has organised 81 buying missions from 55 countries and regions, bringing more than 5,200 buyers to the fair. Among the participating buyers, more than 80% come from emerging markets such as Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. More than 6,700 buyers have pre-registered to visit the fair.

The HKTDC has enhanced its free shuttle bus service for the fair to take event participants between the exhibition venue, major hotels and transportation hubs. HKTDC Services Counters are available in the buffer halls at Hong Kong International Airport, where buyers can find fair information and register for buyer badges in advance. Buyer Concierge Desks have also been set up to strengthen connections with exhibitors.

Innovative technologies on display

The fair includes a total of 12 group pavilions representing France, Italy, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Visionaries of Style (VOS) as well as the HKOMA. It also features several group pavilions from the mainland including Yingtan in Jiangxi province, Danyang in Jiangsu province, Mayu in Zhejiang province and Chongqing. The IT Solutions, Shop Fittings & Equipment zone, which made its debut last year, will continue to be a popular draw in 2019, showcasing innovative eyewear technologies, including eyewear customisation software nuVision that allows people to “try on” a huge range of sunglasses virtually (Booth: 1E-A34).

The fair also showcases French brand McLaren’s pure titanium eyewear made using the latest 3D printing technologies (Booth: GH-B05). Local brand OSSII SOUND presents Connector smart glasses that combine eyewear with Bluetooth earphones (Booth: GH-R03). Other product zones include Frames, Lenses & Parts, Eyewear Accessories, Sporting & Professional Eyewear, Kids Eyewear & Reading Glasses, Optometric Instruments, Equipment & Machinery, Contact Lenses & Accessories, and Diagnostic Instruments.

Brand Name Gallery showcases latest global designs

The Brand Name Gallery features 230 renowned international brands, including new participants Absolute Vintage Eyewear (Hong Kong), Maserati (Italy) and NANOVISTA (Spain). Other renowned brands include Paul Hueman (Korea), BMW (Germany), Stepper (Germany), Etnia Barcelona (Spain) and Savile Row (UK). Highlighted products include:

  • UK brand LAURA ASHLEY’s artistic Four Seasons Series features pink lenses decorated with floral patterns in a design that’s both romantic and fashionable. (Booth: GH-J01)
  • MATSUDA is a company that anchors itself in the tradition of craftsmanship with a rich history of making eyeglasses for Japanese emperors. At the fair it showcases a new eyewear series including flip-up sunglasses crafted from titanium. Each finished creation is an object of art. (Booth: GH-F14)
  • Italian brand MOMODESIGN uses stainless steel frames in unique colours, while the arms are made with malleable acetate to make the eyewear lighter. (Booth: GH-R01)

Several Brand Name Gallery eyewear parades are staged throughout the fair period, with models showcasing the latest collections from trendsetting eyewear brands.

    Spotlighting local creative design forces

To promote Hong Kong’s original brand designs and help Hong Kong eyewear companies expand into the global market, the HKOMA is showcasing the latest collections from 30 local eyewear designers at the Brand Name Gallery and Hong Kong Eyewear Good Design. Participating brands include BIG HORN (Booth: GH-L04), HACHILL (Booth: GH-D10) and P+US (Booth: GH-B39).

New exhibitor Absolute Vintage Eyewear (Booth: GH-E40) brings eyewear created specifically for Asian faces and made from natural bullhorn to showcase local craftsmanship of Hong Kong. Kevin Ching, the award-winning designer from Hong Kong brand BIG HORN, has been striving to create designs that combine innovation, creativity and fashion flair. He presents eyewear inspired by the costumes of Chinese ethnic minorities, with diamond-shaped patterns on the lenses and Swarovski fine stones along the arms.

Kazakhstani University helping to revive ancient Silk Road route

     Cache
    Nov 06, 2019
    Picture:

Expert anthropologists and archaeologists from Nazarbayev University are developing the New Silk Road in an ethical, sustainable, and culturally-respectful way, says Dr. Daniel Pugh, Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities. This is after joining The University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR), an alliance between universities with the aim of reviving the 2000-year-old East to West trading route.

The UASR supports The Belt and Road Initiative, which Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced after visiting Kazakhstan, to create the New Silk Road. The Belt and Road Initiative, along with the UASR, aims to promote educational collaboration and economic growth in countries along the Silk Road, including countries throughout Europe and Asia.

As a trained anthropological archaeologist, Dr. Pugh is partially involved with the UASR via the Heritage Alliance of the New Silk Road; a group of universities and heritage professionals interested in developing the Silk Road in an environmentally sustainable way while preserving the archaeological, historical, and cultural resources of the region.
Founded in 2015, the UASR includes 132 universities spread over five continents, and has become vital to the Ministry of Education of China’s plans for Educational Development along the Silk Road through student exchange and joint research.

The original Silk Road was a network of trade routes integral to the economic, cultural, political, and religious interactions between the East and the West from 2nd century BCE to the 18th century – almost two millennia! Its name is taken from the original use of trading in silk, but would also carry paper, gunpowder, and scientific advancements, as well as philosophies and religions. This trade route was significant in the development of civilisations in South Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

    #####

Construction of the New Silk Road puts the archaeological heritage of the road at risk of being destroyed. Dr. Pugh believes that the heritage of the region needs to be protected by up-training those involved in the construction, that the New Silk Road should be used to develop tourism of the area, and that knowledge gained during construction should be developed as a resource for scholars around the world. https://nu.edu.kz/

Arendamaks kahe riigi logistikaalast koostööd, sõidab majandus- ja taristuminister Taavi Aas koos Eesti äridelegatsiooniga tuleval nädalal töövisiidile Kasahstani. „Eesti on huvitatud koostööst logistika valdkonnas ja Kasahstani puhul on märksõnadeks teravilja ja naftasaaduste transiit läbi Eesti,“ ütles minister Aas. Samuti tuleb juttu online kaubandusele jaotuskeskuste loomine Eestisse ja Hiina-Kasahstan-Eesti konteinerrongi marsruudi arendamine. Ministriga sõidavad kaasa Eesti logistika, ehituse ja IT valdkonna ettevõtjad. Freedom House

     Cache

5 ноября Международная правозащитная организация Freedom House опубликовала отчет с оценкой уровня свободы Интернета в мире (Freedom on the Net).

Freedom House.

Freedom on the Net:

     Cache

Human Rights Watch

    • соблюдать право на свободу собрания, позволяя протестам проходить без необоснованных задержаний или арестов, реформировать действующий ограничительный закон о митингах, который предписывает получать разрешение на проведение митингов у местных властей и оговаривает проведение акций в специально отведенных местах, ограничивает право граждан на свободу мирных собраний;
    • освободить тех, кто был неправомерно заключен в тюрьму за свою активную позицию, в частности гражданского активиста Макса Бокаева и профсоюзного лидера Ерлана Балтабая;
    • внести изменения в статью 174 уголовного кодекса — о «возбуждении социальной, национальной, клановой, расовой, классовой или религиозной розни» — и статью 274 («Распространение заведомо ложной информации») для предотвращения произвольных судебных преследований;
    • снять ограничения на деятельность независимых профсоюзов и прекратить преследование профсоюзных активистов.

Study: Russia's web-censoring tool sets pace for imitators

     Cache

WASHINGTON (AP) — Russia is succeeding in imposing a highly effective internet censorship regime across thousands of disparate, privately owned providers in an effort also aimed at making government snooping pervasive, according to a study released Wednesday.

The study by University of Michigan researchers says the model can be easily exported to other nations, and it challenges the notion that decentralized internet service can prevent large-scale censorship of the types imposed by Iran and China.

"What this study shows is that Russia has created a blueprint for censoring the internet on top of a network of internet service providers that is very much like the networks found in Western democracies," said J. Alex Halderman, a leading computer scientist at the university who was not involved in the study. "As other governments decide to crack down on the free flow of information online, they may follow Russia's game plan."

Seven years of publicly available data reviewed by the researchers, who call their lab Censored Planet, attests to the Russian government's increasing success at getting privately owned internet providers to block online addresses used by critics of President Vladimir Putin and independent news outlets.

Previously, Censored Planet's discovery of efforts by Kazakhstan's government to surveil internet traffic led Mozilla, Apple and Google to add protections to their browsers. Its latest study comes as a new Russian law formalizes Kremlin censorship and seeks to further tighten information control.

Under the law, devices known as "middleboxes" that surgically filter web content are required, and the state will buy the deep-packet inspection technology and provide it to the internet service providers, effectively assuming direct control over internet traffic. The boxes must be configured so that the...

     Cache

Leit  Bloomberg - farma, nu-i așa?

DHL ramps up its rail network and service along the new silk road

     Cache
In response to growing demand for rail freight services between Europe and Asia, DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight specialist of Deutsche Post DHL Group, has opened three additional Rail Competence Centers in Europe and is introducing the fastest rail freight connection between China and Germany.

Located in Le Havre, France, Felixstowe, UK and Genoa, Italy, the local Rail Centers are staffed with China Rail Experts who advise customers and efficiently coordinate freight volumes.

The new rail service, operating between Xi’an in China and Hamburg and Neuss in Germany, has been set up in cooperation with Xi’an International Inland Port Investment & Development Group Co. Ltd. and is cutting transit time from 17 days to between 10 and 12 days.

“We’ve seen a substantial increase in rail freight volumes along the ‘New Silk Road’ from China to Europe and vice versa,” states Thomas Kowitzki, Head of China Rail, Multimodal Europe, DHL Global Forwarding.

“Rail freight products are attractive due to their cost-effectiveness, short transit time, and lower CO2 emissions compared to other transport modes. Moreover, they require the real operational expertise that we bring to the table. We are happy to further expand our European Rail presence with a focus on rail transport in the DHL network. With our growing number of dedicated Country Rail Competence Centers and cutting-edge rail services we are offering the right portfolio of transport expertise and solutions for our customers while their business between Europe and Asia continues to grow.”

Customer service and freight handling through dedicated local teams

The Rail Competence Centers already coordinate significant volumes of export and import flows, including less-than-container-load (LCL) DHL RailConnect and full-container-load (FCL) DHL RailLine products. In addition to freight handling, dedicated teams offer comprehensive customer service. They coordinate end-to-end transport processes from collection and export all the way to customs clearance and delivery by truck or combined rail transport to the final destination. Customers benefit from shipment tracking, including temperature information upon request. Following the four Regional Rail Competence Centers in China and a European DHL Rail Competence Center in Poland, the first dedicated Country DHL Rail Competence Center was opened in Stuttgart, Germany in 2017.

Cutting-edge transit time of 10 and 12 days

Starting in Xi’an, at the heart of the New Silk Road economic belt, the new rail service takes an approximate 9,400 km route through Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, and Lithuania to Kaliningrad Oblast, a part of the Russian Federation on the south coast of the Baltic Sea, before entering the European Union via the Mamonovo-Braniewo crossing. The final stretch of the route crosses Poland into Germany to the port city of Hamburg, and to Neuss, an important logistics hub on the Rhine River opposite Düsseldorf. This also shortens transit times for customers to other European countries e.g. Benelux, France and UK. Traversing numerous countries, the fastest rail service between China and Germany was created with the support of China Railway, Belintertrans, RTSB Gmbh, and UTLC – Eurasian Rail Alliance.

The fast Xi’an-Germany rail connection will offer customers real-time milestone visibility, using GPS tracking of shipments via the iSee software platform to give shippers door-to-door visibility and insight into any shipping exceptions as soon as they occur.

With the expansion of its intermodal network and expertise, DHL Global Forwarding emphazises the core of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s recently presented new corporate “Strategy 2025 - Delivering excellence in a digital world". The Group's purpose remains to connect people and improve their lives by enabling trade and helping businesses to grow.

    KEY MESSAGES

↗ International prices of wheat and maize rose in March for the third consecutive month and averaged more than 10 percent above their levels in December 2017. Prices were mainly supported by concerns over the impact of prolonged dryness in key-growing areas of the United States of America and Argentina, coupled with strong demand. International rice prices remained relatively stable.

↗ In South America, severe dry weather and strong demand underpinned the domestic prices of grains in key exporting country, Argentina, while the price of yellow maize spiked also in Brazil in March.

↗ In East Africa, in the Sudan, the strong upward surge in prices of coarse grains faltered in March but they remained at record or near-record highs, reflecting the removal of the wheat subsidies and the strong depreciation of the local currency.

↗ In Southern Africa, in Madagascar, prices of locally-produced and imported rice declined in February from the record highs reached in January with the harvesting of the minor season paddy crop and following an appreciation of the Malagasy Ariary.

    KEY MESSAGES

↗ International prices of wheat and maize increased further in February, mainly supported by weather-related concerns and currency movements. Export price quotations of rice also continued to strengthen, although the increases were capped by subsiding global demand for Indica supplies.

↗ In East Africa, in the Sudan, prices of the main staples: sorghum, millet and wheat, continued to increase in February and reached record highs, underpinned by the removal of the wheat subsidies and the strong depreciation of the Sudanese Pound.

↗ In Southern Africa, in Madagascar, prices of rice hit record highs at the start of the year, as a result of tight supplies following a sharp drop in the 2017 output to a substantially below-average level and a weaker currency.

↗ In West Africa, prices of coarse grains continued to generally increase in February and reached levels above those a year earlier despite the good harvests gathered in late 2017, due to a strong demand for stock replenishment, coupled with localized production shortfalls and insecurity in some areas.

    • The benchmark US wheat price declined in October mostly because of higher supply prospects while maize quotations firmed due to rain-induced harvest delays. International rice prices strengthened in October, mainly reflecting seasonally tight Japonica and fragrant supplies.

    • In East and West Africa, cereal prices declined in October with the 2017 ongoing or recently-started harvests. However, concerns over crop outputs and civil insecurity kept prices at high levels in some countries, particularly in Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Sudan.

    • In Central America, heavy rains in October led to unseasonal increases in maize and bean prices. They remained, however, at levels well below those a year earlier as a result of adequate domestic supplies, following the overall good outputs in 2016 and the 2017 first season harvests.

    • International prices of wheat increased in September mostly because of weather-related concerns, while maize quotations fell further on crop harvest pressure. International rice prices remained generally firm, supported by seasonally tight availabilities of fragrant rice and strong demand for higher quality Indica supplies.

    • In East Africa, prices of cereals remained at levels above those of a year earlier in most countries, particularly in Ethiopia reflecting seasonal tightness amid concerns over the impact of the Fall Armyworm infestation on the main harvest and in South Sudan mainly due to the ongoing conflict.

    • In Asia, prices of rice in Bangladesh increased again in September and reached record highs, with seasonal patterns exacerbated by the reduced 2017 main season output and concerns over the impact of the July-August floods on the second season crop, to be harvested from November.

Northern Asian Pliocene–Pleistocene beremendiin shrews (Mammalia, Lipotyphla, Soricidae): a description of material from Russia (Siberia), Kazakhstan, and Mongolia and the paleobiology of Beremendia

     Cache
    Abstract
Beremendiini is an extinct group of soricine shrews that were widely distributed during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Their occurrence in China has been investigated, but their presence in northern Asian regions has remained poorly studied. This paper analyzes 56 fossil remains of Beremendiini collected from 16 early Pliocene to early Pleistocene localities in Russia (Siberia), Kazakhstan, and Mongolia and shows the presence of two beremendiin species: Beremendia fissidens (Petényi, 1864) and Beremendia minor Rzebik-Kowalska, 1976. Northern Asian Beremendia considerably vary in size and qualitative characteristics, although most of the different states have been identified in European or Chinese specimens. Through the application of geometric morphometric techniques, mandibular shape analyses reveal similarities between the members of the beremendiin genera Peisorex Kowalski and Li, 1963, Beremendia Kormos, 1934, and Lunanosorex Jin and Kawamura, 1996. Shape analyses and comparisons of mandibular characteristics reveal ‘trophic’ analogies between Beremendia and Blarina spp. and a new model of ‘Mandible Swinging and Sliding’ (MSS-model) accounting for the similarities in mandibular morphology with implications for the understanding of the diet of Beremendia.UUID: http://zoobank.org/ef92ee1a-3977-44b2-86d7-381665bcf78b

    PRESS RELEASE

               5 November 2019                                                                                                    Aktobe region

Half a ton of black caviar tried to take out of Kazakhstan to Russia

The car was detained while trying to cross the state border of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the Russian Federation at the checkpoint "Zhaysan-avto" upon the statement of false information in shipping documents by the officials of the Office of export control of SRD of Aktobe region together with employees of BS NSC RK.

The driver provided shipping documents for goods - "raisins, peanuts, cereals rice".

According to shipping documents, the sender of the cargo is an individual entrepreneur from Shymkent, the recipient is a private person in Moscow.

During the inspection of the above-mentioned vehicle, together with the employees of the BS of the NSC of Kazakhstan, "black sturgeon caviar" was found in the amount of 43 boxes, with a total weight of 516 kg with a cost of 156 million tenge.

During documentary check it was established that on the goods - black caviar there are no shipping documents, and also "black sturgeon caviar" is available in the list of exemptions.

According to the Order of MF RK of December 29, 2015 No. 718 § 9, 10-1 "When exported to the territory of another member state of the EAEU goods included in the List, from the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan and imported before the entry into force of the Protocol, the shipping documents are stamped by the SRA paper copies of electronic invoices and declarations for the goods, ST-1".

Materials on this fact are being prepared for transfer to the Department of Internal Affairs of the Aktobe region.

In General, criminal liability is provided for these violations according to article 339 of the Criminal code RK, which is punishable by a fine of up to three thousand monthly calculation indices (7.6 million tenge) or correctional labor in the same amount, or involvement in public works for up to eight hundred hours, or restriction of liberty for up to three years, or imprisonment for the same term.

Two transit violations were identified with the help of navigation seals over the weekend

    PRESS RELEASE

4 November 2019                                                                                                                                          Nur Sultan city

Two transit violations were identified with the help of navigation seals over the weekend

Carriers from Kyrgyzstan stated in the accompanying documents the Russian Federation as the final destination. However, the goods (fresh pears and apples) were in the markets of Nur-Sultan and Karaganda. In both cases, the sender was one legal entity.

The first case was recorded in the market" Sharyn" of the city of Nur Sultan. The navigation seal signaled a deviation from the declared route – the truck stood motionless for two days on the territory of the market, as the dispatchers reported to the employees of the Export control office of the SRC. As it turned out, the car arrived on the market on October 31, 2019.

On November 3, 2019 the fact of sale of transit cargo in the territory of the market is recorded. As can be seen from the video, the cable of the navigation seal was cut and the trailer door was opened. The seal itself was in the iron safe of the body. At the time of crossing the border in the car was 19.3 tons of fruit. By the time it was discovered on the market in the capital, he managed to sell more than 10 tons.

In the explanatory the driver reported that the car and the refrigerator failed several times along the way. He informed the owner of the goods about this. She, in turn, recommended him to go to the capital market and sell the goods. At the moment, the owner of the goods from Karaganda is sent to the SRO of the Baikonur district of SRD of Nur-Sultan city to give explanations and pay the amount of VAT.

The second case of violation of transit was revealed in the market "Shygys" of Karaganda city. The driver informed the dispatcher of the service of navigation seals about the breakdown of the car and decided to sell it due to the fact that this product is perishable. After working on this issue with the staff of the SRD of the Karaganda region, the administration of the market assumed obligations to pay VAT.

It should be noted that in both cases the sender was one legal entity from the Kyrgyz Republic.

In General, for these violations, drivers will be brought to administrative responsibility under part 4 of article 573 of the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan on administrative offenses. They will have to pay fines of 20 MCI.

For reference: the use of navigation seals will further simplify customs procedures and reduce the administrative burden on business by eliminating physical control measures in the form of inspections and physical accompaniments.

In general, for 9 months of the current year, 842 violations were revealed and 72.5 million tenge of fines were imposed for transit movements of goods.

Hillary Clinton Gave 20 Percent of United States' Uranium to Russia in Exchange for Clinton Foundation Donations?

Allegations of a "quid pro quo" deal giving Russia ownership of one-fifth of U.S. uranium deposits in exchange for $145 million in donations to the Clinton Foundation are unsubstantiated.

Sec. of State Hillary Clinton's approval of a deal to transfer control of 20% of U.S. uranium deposits to a Russian company was a quid pro quo exchange for donations to the Clinton Foundation. See Example( s )

    RATING

     FALSE

    ORIGIN

In the months leading up to the 2016 United States presidential election, stories abounded about the relationships between the Clinton Foundation and various foreign entities.

May 2015 saw the publication of a book called Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich, an exposé of alleged Clinton Foundation corruption written by Peter Schweizer, a former Hoover Institution fellow and editor-at-large at the right-wing media company Breitbart.

A chapter in the book suggests that the Clinton family and Russia each may have benefited from a “pay-for-play” scheme while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, involving the transfer of U.S. uranium reserves to the new Russian owners of an international mining operation in exchange for $145 million in donations to the Clinton Foundation.

The mining company, Uranium One, was originally based in South Africa, but merged in 2007 with Canada-based UrAsia Energy. Shareholders there retained a controlling interest until 2010, when Russia’s nuclear agency, Rosatom, completed purchase of a 51% stake. Hillary Clinton played a part in the transaction because it involved the transfer of ownership of a material deemed important to national security — uranium, amounting to one-fifth of U.S. reserves — thus requiring the approval of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), on which the U.S. Secretary of State sits.

During the same time frame that the acquisition took place, Schweizer claims in Clinton Cash, the Clinton Foundation accepted contributions from nine individuals associated with Uranium One totaling more than $100 million. Among those who followed him in citing the transaction as an example of alleged Clinton corruption was GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, who said during a June 2016 speech in New York City:

Hillary Clinton’s State Department approved the transfer of 20% of America’s uranium holdings to Russia, while nine investors in the deal funneled $145 million to the Clinton Foundation.

Trump’s campaign repeated the allegation in a September 2016 press release, and again in an October 2016 television ad stating that Clinton “gave American uranium rights to the Russians”:

    < -="https://www.youtube.com//epbmHco8sF0" width="500" height="281" border="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" ="lazy-loaded" ="https://www.youtube.com//epbmHco8sF0" style="-sizing: inherit; display: block; margin: 0px auto; max-width: 100%; -: "undefined";">

An image circulating via social media during the final months of the presidential campaign asked the question, “So Hillary, if Russia is such a threat, why did you sell them 20% of our uranium? Are you a liar, or a traitor, or both?”

    clinton-uranium

The Uranium One deal was not Clinton’s to veto or approve

Among the ways these accusations stray from the facts is in attributing a power of veto or approval to Secretary Clinton that she simply did not have. Clinton was one of nine cabinet members and department heads that sit on the CFIUS, and the secretary of the treasury is its chairperson. CFIUS members are collectively charged with evaluating the transaction for potential national security issues, then turning their findings over to the president. By law, the committee can’t veto a transaction; only the president can. According to The New York Times, Clinton may not have even directly participated in the Uranium One decision. Then-Assistant Secretary of State Jose Fernandez, whose job it was to represent the State Dept. on CFIUS, said Clinton herself “never intervened” in committee matters.

Despite transfer of ownership, the uranium remained in the U.S.

A key fact ignored in criticisms of Clinton’s supposed involvement in the deal is that the uranium was not — nor could it be — exported, and remained under the control of U.S.-based subsidiaries of Uranium One, according to a statementby the Nuclear Regulatory Commission:

NRC’s review of the transfer of control request determined that the U.S. subsidiaries will
remain the licensees, will remain qualified to conduct the uranium recovery operations, and will continue to have the equipment, facilities, and procedures necessary to protect public health and safety and to minimize danger to life or property. The review also determined that the licensees will maintain adequate financial surety for eventual decommissioning of the sites. Neither Uranium One nor ARMZ holds an NRC export license, so no uranium produced at either facility may be exported.

The timing of most of the donations does not match

Of the $145 million allegedly contributed to the Clinton Foundation by Uranium One investors, the lion’s share — $131.3 million — came from a single donor, Frank Giustra, the company’s founder. But Giustra sold off his entire stake in the company in 2007, three years before the Russia deal and at least 18 months before Clinton became secretary of state.

Of the remaining individuals connected with Uranium One who donated to the Clinton Foundation, only one was found to have contributed during the same time frame that the deal was taking place, according to The New York Times — Ian Telfer, the company’s chairman:

His donations through the Fernwood Foundation included $1 million reported in 2009, the year his company appealed to the American Embassy to help it keep its mines in Kazakhstan; $250,000 in 2010, the year the Russians sought majority control; as well as $600,000 in 2011 and $500,000 in 2012. Mr. Telfer said that his donations had nothing to do with his business dealings, and that he had never discussed Uranium One with Mr. or Mrs. Clinton. He said he had given the money because he wanted to support Mr. Giustra’s charitable endeavors with Mr. Clinton. “Frank and I have been friends and business partners for almost 20 years,” he said.

The timing of Telfer’s donations might be questionable if there was reason to believe that Hillary Clinton was instrumental in the approval of the deal with Russia, but all the evidence points to the contrary — that Clinton did not play a pivotal role, and, in fact, may not have played any role at all.

    Foundation admits disclosure mistakes

One fault investigations into the Clinton Foundation’s practices did find was that not all of the donations were properly disclosed — specifically, those of Uranium One Chairman Ian Telfer between 2009 and 2012. The foundation admitted this shortcoming and pledged to correct it, but as the Guardian pointed out in its May 2015 discussion of Clinton Cash, the fact that it happened is reason enough to sound alarm bells:

It is also true that large donations to the foundation from the chairman of Uranium One, Ian Telfer, at around the time of the Russian purchase of the company and while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, were never disclosed to the public. The multimillion sums were channeled through a subsidiary of the Clinton Foundation, CGSCI, which did not reveal its individual donors.

Such awkward collisions between Bill’s fundraising activities and Hillary’s public service have raised concerns not just among those who might be dismissed as part of a vast right-wing conspiracy.

An enormous volume of interest and speculation surrounds the workings of the Clinton Foundation, which is to be expected. Given the enormous sums of money it controls and the fact that it is run by a former U.S. president who is married to a possible future U.S. president, the foundation deserves all the scrutiny it gets, and more.

At the same time, for the sake of accuracy it’s crucial to differentiate between partisan accusations and what we actually know about it — however little that may be.

    Update

On 17 October 2017, The Hill reported obtaining evidence that Vadim Mikerin, a Russian official who oversaw the American operations of the Russian nuclear agency Rosatom, was being investigated for corruption by multiple U.S. agencies while the Uranium One deal was up for approval — information that apparently was not shared with U.S. officials involved in approving the transaction. The Hill also reported receiving documents and eyewitness testimony “indicating Russian nuclear officials had routed millions of dollars to the U.S. designed to benefit former President Bill Clinton’s charitable foundation during the time Secretary of State Hillary Clinton served on a government body that provided a favorable decision to Moscow,” although no specifics about who those Russian nuclear officials were or how the money was allegedly routed to the Clinton Foundation were given. In any case, none of these revelations prove that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton participated in a quid pro quo agreement to accept payment for approval of the Uranium One deal.

BEYOND MUSIC has unveiled the music video for “Our Colors” - an original collaborative song that celebrates global friendship and cultural richness, and includes nearly all of the 23 BEYOND MUSIC artists that participated in this first-of-its-kind new project. BEYOND MUSIC Volume One / Same Sky brings together 23 artists from 17 countries who have met and networked through the new online collaborative platform (https://beyondmusic.org) to create a definitive global music album, overseen and produced by 2019 GRAMMY Producer of the Year nominee Larry Klein.

Today, Billboard premiered the video and spoke with Larry Klein about the making of it. Read the article here: https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/8542500/beyond-music-our-colors-video

"Our Colors" was created with the collaboration of almost all BEYOND MUSIC artists during the recordings of Same Sky at the prestigious "Studios La Fabrique" in France and offers a fascinating look into the recording process. It began with a string arrangement by Danish violinist Andreas Bernitt, who said the following:

"Meeting the other BEYOND MUSIC artists at Studios La Fabrique in France was a life changing experience - so much special multicoloured talent gathered in one place! I wanted to create something special, through which, we could all connect - and contribute with our different cultural and musical backgrounds."

Andreas invited the BEYOND MUSIC artists to play something on top of his string line to ensure all artists left their musical fingerprint on this song.

BEYOND MUSIC Founder Regula Curti and CEO Konstanze Wiedemann expanded on the song’s message: “The fundamental spirit of BEYOND MUSIC is unity in diversity. Music has the power to embrace everyone by honoring their culture, race, tradition and style. ‘Our Colors’ celebrates each musical expression, vocally or instrumentally, for its distinct and unique characteristics. By unifying diverse human sound colors makes music more brilliant and affecting.”

Tina Turner, Co-Founder and ambassador of BEYOND MUSIC said: “I see humanity in this way. By honoring each other’s ethnic, religions, and cultural backgrounds, we become stronger and happier, brightening the cosmic masterpiece of artwork that is our world.”

Recently, the project’s producer Larry Klein appeared on Southern California’s KPFK, as well as KPCC’s The Frame to discuss working on the project. Read more at GRAMMY.comTape-Op and Forbes as well.

A Photographer's Ode to Everyday Soviet Architecture

     Cache

Concrete is a common, humble material—sand, gravel, and cement—but Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev sang its praises for the better part of a passionate, detailed, two-hour speech he delivered to an industrial conference in 1954. He proposed that concrete should be used for anything and everything, especially prefabricated and standardized buildings that would help accelerate construction and development. It was, he argued, absolutely vital to the Soviet project. The subsequent boom in mass housing was described by The New York Times in 1967 as an “architectural sputnik.” (Though the piece did also state, “There is no real style in Soviet cities yet.”)

Concrete is abundantly present in the contemporary cityscapes of Russian photographer Areniy Kotov. Images from his upcoming book, Soviet Cities: Labour, Life & Leisure, often depict rows and rows of high-rises, marching endlessly across the horizon. Yet within the cold-looking concrete blocks, he also manages to capture the warm glow of life in apartment windows.

Kotov was born in 1988, so he did not experience much of Soviet life, but he admires the period’s “great civilization” of architectural and cultural heritage. The country is changing fast, but nostalgia for Soviet aesthetics is strong.

Kotov traveled to hundreds of Russian cities over three years, and plans to visit more. “Every new place hides its secrets,” he says via email. “It is normal here (in ex-USSR cities) to feel yourself like an archaeologist, who came to the ruins of great ancient civilization, and didn’t know what you would find!”

The photographer spoke with Atlas Obscura about his enthusiasm for Soviet history, fascination with rockets, and nighttime adventures. His book will be published in 2020 by FUEL Design & Publishing.

    article-image

What inspired you to photograph Soviet architecture?

I got my first camera when I was 22 and had just finished university. It was interesting for me to try out different genres, and more than anything I liked city landscapes. So every evening I went to different corners of my hometown to take pictures from different high-rise residential blocks. Around 70 percent of Samara (my hometown) was built during the Soviet era. I started to see beauty in their strict plan and strong forms. Then after three years, when I was 25, I decided to travel for some time. I lived in Sochi, St. Petersburg, and hitchhiked across Russia, and went to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine. In every place I saw interesting details, not only in individual buildings, but also in whole city plans. I had the idea to make a collection of the most outstanding buildings and districts.

What makes you want to document this particular style of architecture?

Actually I like the process! More than anything, I enjoy traveling in my homeland, and in Russia and the former Soviet Republics, all of them are somehow similar to what I saw in my hometown before. Nowadays the things that unite these separate countries are slowly but surely being destroyed. Sometimes it is time and severe weather, sometimes crazy revolutions, sometimes indifference of people, privatization, or many other reasons. All this urban environment that is so close to people's hearts, who grew up in 1980s and 1990s, is disappearing. That's why I decided to document the traces of Soviet civilization. Soon there will be nothing to document.

Were people surprised to see that you had come to photograph everyday Soviet architecture?

Most people do not recognize Soviet architectural heritage as something noteworthy, because in their childhoods it was more customary to admire ancient Orthodox churches or European cities with palaces, castles, and narrow streets. During my childhood, a few people had just started to recognize Constructivist architecture of the 1930s and the Stalin period as something interesting. And in early 2000s some specialists started to talk about Soviet modernism. Architecture needs time to become recognizable, so now the time has come. I don't blame people that they don't know anything about this kind of architecture; in several years they surely will.

    article-image

You used to work in a rocket factory. Did that influence your work?

I worked for three years at a factory where Soyuz rockets are manufactured. It gave me an understanding of how strong and powerful our industry was before. Most other space factories are already abandoned, rented out, or destroyed. When I started my job as an engineer, the factory was semi-abandoned; there were colossal workshops that were completely empty, with Soviet slogans and posters still on the walls. In the courtyard was a huge red hammer-and-sickle monument with "Glory to Labor" on it. I liked to walk around the factory in my spare time, and I was sad that the great story of my ancestors was in the process of being abandoned and forbidden. I think it inspired my photography somehow.

Your photos have a strong sense of pattern and lighting. How do you achieve these effects?

I try to find interesting structures by satellite maps and understand from which place it will be best to photograph them. For city landscapes, I always try to get higher—usually it is possible to get to the roof or public balcony or even to a hill. I always plan every evening. I know when and where the sunset will be, and I try to choose a position that will avoid backlight from the sun.

What was your most challenging site?

In my childhood, I liked to read books about discoverers who were the first to visit unknown regions and put them on a map. One of them was [Alexei] Fedchenko, who was a Russian officer and explorer. The Fedchenko Glacier in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan is named for him, and is the longest outside of the polar regions. And on this glacier there was a unique construction—a meteorological station. After the collapse of Soviet Union, people abandoned it, but it is still in good condition and all the original interiors were safe there. To get to this station I traveled for seven days. The region is absolutely wild, there are no people there except a small camp of shepherds in one canyon. Visiting this abandoned station was the biggest challenge for me.

    article-image

Do you have a favorite site from the project?

One of my favorites was the trip to the abandoned part of Baikonur Cosmodrome, the world's first and largest operational space launch facility. It is located in the desert steppes of Kazakhstan and is secured by Russian police, so the best way to get in there is during the cover of night. About three years ago it was discovered, by one Russian urban explorer, that the last great Soviet space projects, the Buran shuttle and Energia rocket, are hidden and abandoned in gigantic workshops there. So after a 35-kilometer [20-mile] hike through the night, it was a fantastic feeling to arrive and get into the enormous workshops where the future of Soviet space program is buried.

Is there someplace that you haven’t photographed yet that you really want to get to?

I really want to get to Norilsk! It is a northeastern city with more than 100,000 inhabitants that was built for miners who work on largest nickel deposit in the world. Summer is very short and winter is long and harsh there, but the landscapes are fantastic: snowy tundra with an industrial city and no trees.

This interview was edited for length and clarity.

Yasmin Latief Bawa Bendera Indonesia di New York City Marathon

     Cache
Lomba lari maraton terbesar di dunia, TCS New York City Marathon, kembali digelar di kota New York, Minggu (3/11).
