I have been watching with interest the nomination process that is happening in the USA particularly with the Republican Party bun fight for their nominee. The debates are prolific with typical political innuendo and the desire to try to convince the public to accept each partys’ policies or attempts to have any. A rather grey bunch of the inevitable professional political candidates all seeking to make a living off the taxpayer by being elected to a nice paid position without ever really having to get any action to meet the word.

If the test comes back positive for the bacteria, then the doctor will usually prescribe an antibiotic. But strep throat is a self-limited disease that will go away on its own, says Shulman. Antibiotics are not prescribed to treat strep itself, but to prevent serious complications, such as rheumatic fever.

It was another memorable Sunday Million on PokerStars this week, especially for the nine players who emerged from the 11,878-entry field to make the final table.
The big turnout meant a $1,187,800 prize pool was divided among the top 2,150 finishers, with winner Ben_Apart of the United Kingdom ultimately coming out on top to earn a big $119,637.71 payday.
Here’s the story of how the tournament was won, aided by the perspectives of a couple of final-tablists who like the others won’t be forgetting this tournament for a long time.
jkru005 soars high before falling in eighth
It took about 13 hours to play all of the way down to the nine-handed final table, by which point all of the red spade wearers who had played — Tom “MajinBoob” Hayward of PokerStars Twitch, Felix “xflixx” Schneiders of Team Online, and Team Pro Kalidou Sow — were long gone.
Ben_Apart had the chip lead when the final table started with a little over 30 million when the average was just under 13.2 million. Meanwhile fellow UK player “jkru005” was one of several sitting around the 10M mark, though leading up to that point he’d been riding high for much of the previous several hours.
“I was killing it from mid-game to the final 18,” jkru005 told us, noting how he’d had the chip lead with 180 players left and remained in the top 10 all of the way to the last two tables. But as play wore on and the field whittled further, the differences in the stacks got smaller.
“It got to a stage 12-handed where chip distribution was so flat that if you lose a flip you go from 1st to 10th,” explains jkru005. He recalls one key hand with 14 left in which he knocked out an opponent after three-betting all-in with K-J, getting called by 7-7, and hitting a jack to win.
“After winning this pot I definitely thought I would be in the run to win, but unfortunately fate had other plans. :(”
Indeed it was just after the final table started that jkru005 watched the Netherlands’ “Cashaoui” open-shove a stack of just under 10 BB, then from the button jkru005 reraise-pushed his almost 15 BB with Q♦Q♣. Alas for both, leader Ben_Apart was waiting in the small blind with K♦K♣ and thus put all his chips in the middle, too — and both of his opponents at risk.
Cashaoui had 7♠7♥, it turned out, but the 8♠Q♥6♠ flop had jkru005 again having visions of his tourney journey going even further. The K♠ turn dashed those dreams, though, and after the 3♥ river jkru005 was out in eighth and Cashaoui in ninth.
“I think I woke up my whole building when I saw the Q, but yeah the turn almost made me cry haha,” says jkru005 who ultimately earned one of his biggest cashes ever after playing off and on (including some full-time) over the last several years.
“I was so sad having played for almost 16 hours (if you include the $5.50 satellite that I played to get into this crapshoot haha),” he says. Still, he says, it was definitely a “good result” despite having seemingly been in position previously to go further.
Two more fall
About 15 minutes later “RafaCorreaBR” of Brazil was down to 15 BBs before getting it all in on an ace-high flop holding A♠10♠ versus Germany’s “JulianPasare”. But the latter had A♣J♣, and when the hand held RafaCorreaBR was done in seventh.
Six-handed then lasted another 20 minutes before “thebigdog09” of Mexico was knocked out, also by JulianPasare and once again on the flop.
The board read 6♣2♦4♦ and that encouraged thebigdog09 to commit a short stack with A♦3♦ while JulianPasare had 10♠10♣. But the 4♥ turn and 3♠ river weren’t enough to change things, and thebigdog09 was out in sixth.
Great score for GreekPro47
With five left “yodashutka” of Russia had moved ahead of Ben_Apart into the lead while Denmark’s “x_zola25” had slipped to fifth. In fourth was “GreekPro47”, a part-time player from Canada (with parents from Greece) who talked to us about his long Sunday.
After playing a lot several years ago while in school, poker was mainly a side hobby for GreekPro47 until recently. “The last 3-6 months I’ve been taking it more seriously, playing in the evenings and on weekends. I actually came in third in the Sunday Storm a few weeks ago, and that kind of gave me a bump to take a shot [in the Sunday Million] this week as I had some free time.”
After not having played the Sunday Million for a long time, he got a big dose of it with 13-14 hours’ worth of poker. It looked for a moment that he wouldn’t get as far as the final table, though, after losing a big hand with about 100 players left to fall back to 4-5 BBs. His kings were cracked by an opponent’s queens, despite a Q-J-T all-club flop with GreekPro47 holding the K♣. But he persevered.
“I said ‘you know what? just fight it out and see what happens.’ I ended up laddering and laddering until I finally got to the final table,” he says.
However, with five left he ran pocket jacks into leader yadoshutka’s pocket kings. The board rolled out six-high, and GreekPro47 was sent railward in fifth.
“There was one player [x_zola25] who was super-short, which might make you think it was a mistake,” he says. “But the cards came out low, so I’m pretty sure one way or another we were getting those chips in.”
After making a career-high cash of about $7,800 in that recent Sunday Storm, he’d suddenly set a new record for himself by cashing for more than $33K.
“I might play a few more Sunday Storms and some bigger tournaments when I have the time,” he says, “but I’m pretty comfortable just playing $20 and $30 tourneys.”
Ben_Apart stands alone
x_zola25 did fall shortly thereafter in fourth in a three-way hand ending with JulianPasare scoring yet another knockout. All three remaining players would lead at some point over the next 40 minutes, with Ben_Apart finally again taking control.
Indeed, Ben_Apart was so far in front that when yodashutka busted JulianPasare in third with deuces versus king-five, Ben_Apart still had a better than 2-to-1 chip lead to start heads-up.
Ten minutes later it ended with a preflop all-in, yodashuka’s A♦9♠ versus Ben_Apart’s A♣J♥, with the latter’s hand prevailing to win the title and six-figure first prize.
Congratulations to Ben_Apart for the win and to everyone else who made the final table to earn nice cash prizes and a special poker memory.

Η χώρα έχει επίσης και το δεύτερο μεγαλύτερο χάσμα ΦΠΑ που αγγίζει το 34% σχεδόν ανάμεσα στα προβλεπόμενα έσοδα του ΦΠΑ και τα πραγματικά έσοδα που εισπράττονται.; Value Added Tax (VAT) was imposed in Greece in 1987 with a two-year delay as the country had been extended to adjust its tax system due to its accession to the European Economic Community (EEC). In the early years there was a very high luxury VAT which was 36% for some types of luxury and regular VAT which was 18%. In the following years it stabilized at 19% to 21% and in 2016 it reached the upper limit of 24%. These changes, as well as their size, have had an impact on the economy and entrepreneurship, while also affecting heavily on consumers who are required to pay VAT on independent income. The country also has the second largest VAT gap, which accounts for almost 34% between projected VAT revenue and actual revenue collected.

Πολλά απ’ αυτά είναι επισκέψιμα για την αποτελεσματικότερη προβολή της διαδικασίας παραγωγής του κρασιού στους οινόφιλους επισκέπτες του Ν.Ηρακλείου αλλά και της Κρήτης.; Wine tourism is a new form of alternative tourism that could be described as an offshoot of agrotourism but with significant differences. It focuses on a specific activity which is wine production. It is a journey into the wine world that visitors enjoy by combining it with their vacations. In Greece, wine-based tourism activities have been developed in traditional production areas.
In Greece there are significant opportunities and opportunities for the development of wine tourism. Vineyards are cultivated in many places to produce wine. We constantly see real estate being utilized and modern wineries being created. Many of them are visitable for the more effective promotion of the wine production process to the wine-loving visitors of Heraklion county and Crete.

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis attends Friends of Cohesion Summit (Prague, 5 November 2019)Cache
|A Joint Declaration on maintaining the level of funding for traditional policies, and in particular Cohesion Policy, in the new long-term EU budget was today adopted in Prague by the high-level representatives of the 17 member states participating in the Friends of Cohesion Group. Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis represented the Prime Minister of Greece at the Summit.
The Declaration sets out the will of the 17 member states to ensure a strong EU Cohesion Policy and to secure funding for the next programming period. Special emphasis was put on the decisive contribution of the Cohesion Policy to reducing inequalities in the Peripheries, as it has bolstered job creation, infrastructure and competitiveness.
In his remarks, the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs sent a clear message regarding Greece’s position on the proposed reduction in funding for traditional EU policies. “We are asking Europe to continue to fund policies that change our lives, with infrastructure projects that contribute to growth, so that the poorest regions can converge with the European average,” he stated. Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy initially absorbed about 80% of the EU budget, a percentage that gradually fell to 71% in the context of the current budget. “We believe that the total size of the MFF should come to 1.3% of the GDP of the EU-27, as expressed by the European Parliament, and that spending should be determined according to the spending needs of the EU,” he stressed.
Referring to the ten-year crisis suffered by Greece, which saw its GDP fall by 25%, Mr. Varvitsiotis argued that maintaining funding for traditional policies at current levels provides significant “added value” in the lives of citizens. He underscored that the proposed further reduction of the relative share of the budget for both policies in the next MFF will have a negative impact on its effective implementation. “So it is necessary to maintain at least the current level of funding, in real terms, for the cohesion policy and the CAP in order to ensure their effective implementation,” he said on the issue, concluding that “there is a clear need for special provisions for the member states facing serious economic recession. Greece should be exempted from the proposed ceiling of 8% for the increase of cohesion funds in the next MFF.”
Finally, at the luncheon following the meeting, Mr. Varvitsiotis once again had the opportunity to highlight the migration issue, stressing that it is not a problem Greece is facing alone, but a problem that concerns the whole Union.
Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that Turkey’s exploitation of the migration issue concerns the whole of Europe. “Turkey’s threats to increase migration flows are threats against the whole European Union, and not just against Greece. This is a European problem, not a bilateral problem,” he underscored. Concluding, he said that the Union needs to find ways to return migrants not eligible for asylum to third countries, giving the example of Bangladesh. Specifically, he argued that the European Union is implementing development assistance programmes for various third countries, including Bangladesh, while it should combine these programmes with readmission agreements so that these countries can take back their citizens.|
Interview of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, with the Ria-Novosti news agency and journalist G. Melnik (5 November 2019)Cache
|JOURNALIST: Minister, you’re travelling to Moscow for talks with your Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. What is the agenda for the talks? What topics will you discuss and what is your assessment of the current situation in our bilateral relations?
N. DENDIAS: It will be my first meeting with Mr. Lavrov, and I am very pleased that we will be able to have an in-depth discussion of issues that concern us. Greece and Russia maintain historical relations of friendship and cooperation. Our country consistently pursues the further enhancement of good cooperation with the Russian side, based on mutual respect and equality. I note that Greece, in spite of any problems that were created in the past, remained firm in its insistence on communicating with Russia, even in the midst of a difficult state of affairs in Russia’s relations with the West, which we have seen in recent years. Moreover, Russia is a great power that plays an important role on a global scale, including in Southeast Europe and the Middle East, which are areas of immediate interest to us. This is why we want to develop our relations further, with a view to maintaining regional stability, especially in the current fragile state of affairs. In this context, my Russian colleague, Mr. Lavrov, and I will be able to discuss all of the issues that concern the wider region, with the aim of seeking common ground on how to manage the current challenges. We will also have the opportunity to discuss our bilateral relations, with the aim of enhancing our cooperation in a wide range of sectors.
JOURNALIST: The European sanctions and the Russian embargo limit Greek farmers’ access to the huge Russian market. Do you support French President Emmanuel Macron’s initiatives for overcoming the differences and sanctions in Russian-EU relations – differences and sanctions that benefit no one? How can we improve the relations between Russia and the European Union? What do you think about reinstating the practice of holding EU-Russia summit meetings?
N. DENDIAS: As an EU member state, Greece is bound by EU decisions. This is also true in relation to the sanctions adopted against Russia, which our country is obliged to implement. On the other hand, although Greece is one of the member states that argues in favour of maintaining good, functional relations and open channels of communication with Russia, it is unfortunately also among the countries hardest hit by the inclusion of agricultural products in Russia’s countermeasures, because, as you know, agricultural products are a large portion of our exports. Our country considers Russia to be an intrinsic part of the European security architecture and tries to make a positive contribution to the dialogue with Russia. We support initiatives aimed at improving EU-Russian relations, while also highlighting the need for full implementation of international law. After all, as Greece is well aware from the provocative violations in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, only insistence on strict compliance with the rules of international law can ensure the peaceful coexistence of states and regional stability.
JOURNALIST: There are already significant Russian investments in Greece in sectors of non-strategic interest, such as tourism and real estate. Some €410 million has been invested in Elounda in Crete. In what other sectors do you see opportunities for strategic investments and the development of economic relations? Are there prospects in the energy sector, in the natural gas sector, with regard to the Turkish Stream plan?
N. DENDIAS: As you rightly said, there are opportunities for further development of our bilateral economic relations and for strengthening Russian investments in Greece. Of course, I would say that my country considers tourism a strategic sector. But we are naturally prepared to welcome Russian investments in other sectors as well. First of all, Russian investments in sectors such as infrastructure, transport and construction can be carried out through the participation of investment groups in the privatisation programme our government is implementing, mainly through the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), in combination with the public investment programme that is under way. In fact, Russian investors, like all investors, can take advantage of the benefits of the new development law (financing incentives, reduced bureaucracy, streamlined procedures) that was recently passed by the Hellenic Parliament and provides a very attractive institutional framework for attracting investment programmes of major importance for our country.
I would also like to mention the sectors of high tech and applied research, where, through collaboration between business groups, incubators and start-up clusters, opportunities for mutually beneficial synergies might arise – synergies with significant added value for the collaborating companies and, by extension, our bilateral economic relations.
Regarding the energy sector, Russia is an important partner for Greece, with prospects for further deepening of bilateral cooperation in the future. We welcome the synergies that have been developed between Greek and Russian companies, first and foremost in the natural gas sector, and at the same time we are interested in enhancing our cooperation in other fields, such as renewable energy sources.
JOURNALIST: Minister, Russia and Greece traditionally celebrate major events in our shared history. A few days ago, we marked the anniversary of the Battle of Navarino. Have any joint events been scheduled for 2021, the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution? If so, what events?
N. DENDIAS: The scheduling of events marking the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution is currently under way. In any event, our country acknowledges the decisive role that Russia and other great powers of the era, including Britain and France, played in the Greek Revolution. We are also aware of the decisive role that the Greek diaspora in Russia played in initiating and building the struggle for independence. As such, we want to honour the history of our peoples and our states, and highlight the need for this to guide the future development of our relations.|

issue of asylum and the Union’s migration policy, Mr. Varvitsiotis argued that
it is necessary to increase border guarding and adopt a common European asylum

About 12,000 years ago, the Neolithic Revolution marked the transition in human history from nomadic hunting and gathering to settling in permanent communities. In all probability, from that time forward mankind has fantasized about a city of the future.
Plato’s Atlantis was the source of inspiration for numerous literary and Utopian concepts, some of which have survived to this day.
Many a child of the Silent Generation can vividly recall watching the 1939 movie “Wizard of Oz” — following Dorothy and the gang along the yellow brick road to the gleaming Emerald City. And how many kids in the 1960s were left wishing they too lived in Orbit City where, like the Jetsons, they could fly to school and have a robot maid.
More recently, we can thank Walt Disney Studios for creating Tomorrowland, a 2015 movie filled with sleek buildings and teeming with robots, jet packs and space ships. The plot merited a barrage of rotten tomatoes but the filmmaker’s vision of what a city of the future might look like certainly fired the imagination.
Fictional renditions of the post-modern metropolis aside, we’ve discovered a number of real-life brick-and-mortar — or rather, glass, steel, ashcrete and carbon fiber — developments that suggest that cities of the future may be nearer at hand than we think.
Songdo, South Korea, is generally recognized as the world’s first smart city. Built on 1,500 acres of reclaimed land near Incheon, it is a low-carbon, eco-friendly, master-planned metropolis that is loaded with technological innovations.
The city’s buildings and streets bristle with sensors that monitor everything from energy use to traffic flow. The district boasts more than 20 million square feet of LEED-certified space, the highest concentration of LEED-certified projects in the world.
Pneumatic tubes send trash from residential units to an underground waste facility where it’s sorted and then recycled or burned for energy generation. Lighting, temperature controls and appliances can be adjusted via a central control panel or remotely from a cellphone. There’s a state-of-the-art water recycling facility and generous swaths of greenery sprinkled throughout — the largest one being the 100-acre seaside park modeled and named after New York City’s Central Park.
Trikala, Greece, may seem an unlikely candidate for a leading smart city, owing to its remote location in the country’s agricultural heartland. Inspired by an innovative, tech-savvy mayor who collaborated with the European Commission and some of the continent’s major tech companies, Trikala has taken a big step into the future.
The most substantial impact on residents’ lives was the digitalization of municipal operations, including an e-complaint system to help speed up services, traffic light monitoring and control, a driverless bus system, and the implementation of robotics labs in the city’s public schools.
A few American communities have made some promising futuristic advances as well.
Thanks to a huge 75 MW solar facility built by Florida Power & Light, the small Florida town of Babcock Ranch, just northeast of Fort Myers, has become the country’s first completely solar-powered community — and the first to introduce a self-driving public shuttle network. The town, with a potential for 50,000 fiber-optically connected residents, was designed and constructed from scratch by developers Kitson & Partners, in coordination with state and local governments.
Emerging from a gritty railyard on Manhattan’s West Side, Hudson Yards is a bold $25 billion development that touts itself as “Tomorrow’s City Today,” and is on its way to becoming the largest real estate development in United States history. This grove of crystalline skyscrapers comprises a mixed-use business, retail and residential complex, encompassing 18 million square feet of built space and about 15 acres of open public space.
Hudson Yards is seen as a cutting-edge model for the future of so-called smart cities, i.e., those with fully integrated infrastructures where internet and communications systems, water services, and electrical and power grids are all connected and unified. Although one critic described it as a “surface spectacle,” big name business (BlackRock, Warner Media, L’Oreal) and retail (Neiman Marcus, Dior, Gucci) have enthusiastically embraced the development.
Apartments and condos are reportedly filling at a rapid clip. A second phase of the project is slated to open in 2025.
Another exciting smart city concept being advanced internationally is Saudi Arabia’s planned Red Sea city of the future, named Neom. A master-planned smart city and tourist destination on the Red Sea coast near the borders of Egypt and Jordan, it is a pet project of controversial Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has pledged $500 billion to get the project moving.
Some of that funding is to come from the bounty the kingdom expects from its planned IPO of state-owned Saudi Aramco. That IPO, however, has been delayed until late 2020, so development of Neom could be slowed. Toxicity surrounding the brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, widely believed to be at the hands of the prince, has turned off some international investors in the project, but analysts suggest the smell of money will eventually find them back on board.
The Neom initiative emerged from Salman’s Saudi Vision 2030, a plan that aims to reduce Saudi dependency on oil by diversifying its economy and developing its long-neglected tourism industry.
Plans call for robots to perform functions such as security, logistics, home delivery and caregiving — and for the city to be powered solely with wind and solar power. The first phase of Neom Bay Airport was completed in June 2019, and the facility is now capable of handling international air traffic.
Perhaps the most interesting and feasible future city concept comes from no less than (trumpets, please) Google. The search engine giant’s parent company, Alphabet, has tendered a proposal to build a smart city named Quayside on 350 currently unused acres of Toronto’s eastern waterfront.
“Googleville,” as pundits have tagged it, would feature a long list of high-tech amenities such as solar power, geothermal heat, fiber-optics, and wireless 5G internet for everyone. A subterranean network of tunnels would be used for robotic waste collection and walkways and bike lanes would be heated in the winter.
The design relies on a vast range of data collection, including sensors literally everywhere to track things like the speed of people crossing the streets and park bench and restroom usage.
This has raised suspicion among those who distrust large tech companies that Google will use its vast financial resources and surveillance powers to usurp privacy and exert control over the populace. The project is estimated to cost about $3 billion, with Alphabet putting up $900 million. The plan still needs approval from Canadian regulators and the city of Toronto.
Looking a bit farther into the future, we will likely see such seemingly radical concepts as floating cities and self-contained biospheres become realities. If it can be imagined, there’s no doubt it will be built one day.

The editors of this book examine social movement scholars' use of contemporary concepts and paradigms in the study of protest as they analyse the extent to which these tools are valid (or not) in very different regional - and thus political or cultural - contexts. The authors posit that 'weakly resourced groups' are a particularly useful point of departure to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of three key social movement schools of analysis: resource mobilization, political opportunity structures, and frame analysis. Some of the groups considered in this volume are financially disadvantaged, lacking money and work others are economically disadvantaged, with members having precarious, part-time, or short-term jobs some are socially disadvantaged, with fragile networks of solidarity others are culturally disadvantaged, with members continuously victimized, stigmatized and rejected finally some are politically disadvantaged when they have little or no access to decision-making structures. These exclusionary factors can be cumulative and give way to different outcomes. The chapters cover a large range of examples including urban riots in France and in Great Britain, the World Social Forums of Dakar and Nairobi, the struggles of precarious workers in Italy and Greece, unemployed mobilization in Germany and Ireland, the mobilization of the Roma and Muslims in Europe, the Brazilian landless movement, the mobilization of small farmers in France, as well as mobilization in aut Read more...
