The "Sidekick" goes Euro,or John's Post Brexit Blues! As much as Margot may dislike Walter Brennan or Gabby Hayes these guys have got nothing on the B Series Western sidekicks. As annoying as these cats can be sometimes often film makers add to the pain by providing them with terrible running gag gimmicks. I remember a Wild Bill Elliott B where his regular sidekick was "Cannonball" played by Dub Taylor. I guess Jerry will know the title of the film but in one of their adventures the producers decided to provide Dub with a xylophone to irritate audiences even further, A very un wise move and Dub referred to the darn thing as a "silly-phone" Silly says it all but we do know that Dub far outlived these type of roles. Still the antics of Dub Taylor Smiley Burnett and friends have nothing on the Italians and Germans who decided to introduce "sidekicks" into their Westerns. In the German made Stewart Granger Winnetou/Old Surehand Westerns we get Croatian actor Milan Srdoc (aka Paddy Fox) as "Old Wabble" The only way I can describe Milan's character is as William Fawcett on speed,if one could imagine such a thing. No doubt The Germans found Milan's antics hilarious. Not to be outdone The Italians had Manuel Muniz as "comic relief" in several Spaghetti Westerns. He appeared in several Giuliano Gemma Westerns. I like Gemma,so handsome, charismatic and athletic, and Courtney Joyner likes him as well so that's fine. I could, however do without Manuel's comic relief especially in THE RETURN OF RINGO where he plays Morning Glory a plant obsessed weirdo! Little Shop Of Horrors has nothing on this guy. When all is said and done....come back Dub and Smiley...all is forgiven!

Galati Declaration Issued on Sturgeon Conservation in the Danube Basin and Black Sea

Sturgeons are one of the most endangered species on the planet © unknown30 October 2019, Galati (Romania) - The first ever joint discussion of sturgeon conservation issues among representatives from the Danube Basin and the Black Sea countries has resulted in the Galati Declaration on Sturgeon Conservation in the Danube Basin and Black Sea. The Declaration puts forward key messages to decision-makers from all relevant institutions and other stakeholders as a basis for shaping future actions and the way forward to saving sturgeons from extinction. More importantly, the document will serve as an implementation guide for the Pan-European Sturgeon Action Plan under the Bern Convention and EU Habitats Directive.
The 120 delegates to the International Conservation of Danube Sturgeons Conference: A Challenge or a Burden, represented fisheries, water and environmental administrations, the scientific community and civil society from Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Canada and the European Commission.
"Conference participants confirmed the urgent need for regional collaboration on a long-term fishing ban, effective measures against poaching, limiting bycatch in commercial fisheries and, to ensure that we do not lose the species while trying to save them from extinction, rearing these fish in scientifically controlled facilities in several countries to release them into rivers where populations have crashed or vanished altogether. Other measures highlighted at the meeting are the need of engaging fishing communities in sturgeon conservation and protection of remaining sturgeon habitats for spawning, breeding or overwintering. Only if all relevant stakeholders work together within countries and across borders can these amazing fish be saved from extinction". - Peter Gammeltoft, Chair of the Danube Sturgeon Task Force
The conference was jointly organised by "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati (Research and Development Centre for Sturgeon, Aquatic Habitats and Biodiversity), the DSTF (Danube Sturgeon Task Force), the Romanian Ministry of Water and Forests, the Romanian Ministry of Environment, NAFA (Romanian National Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture), WSCS (World Sturgeon Conservation Society) and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), and took place under the patronage of the Romanian Presidency of the EUSDR (EU Strategy for the Danube Region) and the Romanian Academy from October 28-30.

According to the IUCN, today sturgeons are one of the most endangered species on the planet.
WWF-CEE's long-term sturgeon strategy is to re-invigorate and re-establish healthy, stable populations of this key Danube species, and protect the Green Heart of Europe for nature and people. Currently, there is a complete ban of sturgeon fishing in the Danube and the Black Sea. However, larger fish that swim upstream to reproduce still fall prey to poaching because of the high price their caviar and meat fetches on the black market. Sturgeons are long-lived and reproduce only a few times in their life. We must make sure their habitats are protected and they are allowed to grow and thrive, or we risk losing a species which has survived over 200 million years.

US$27M Picasso Painting Purportedly Smuggled By Head Of Spain’s Richest Bank

Image via aijaphoto /

Jamie Botín, head of Spain’s wealthiest banking company Grupo Santander, has been accused of smuggling a Pablo Picasso painting worth US$27.4 million out of the country.

The artwork entitled Head of a Young Woman is classified as a cultural treasure by the Spanish government. Botín allegedly attempted to sell the painting outside of the country, resulting in possible jail time and an enormous fine.

El País reports that the Picasso painting was retrieved in 2015 from Botín’s yacht in the French island of Corsica while traveling to Switzerland.

The businessman and billionaire heir claimed that he was not attempting to export the painting. Instead, he argued that the piece was “in transit” to Geneva, and was meant to be safely stored at the Freeport Warehouse complex.

During the trial in Madrid on Monday, Botín stuck by his claims that he never had the intention of selling the painting.

If found guilty, the businessman might end up facing a four-year prison sentence and a €100 million ($111 million) fine.

He requested to put the painting up on public display at the Fundacion Botín in Santander and forsake any future attempts to ship the painting in exchange for a lighter sentence. However, his request did not appeal to the prosecutors.

Prosecutors believe that Botín had solicited the painting to go under the hammer at Christie’s in 2012 but the attempt failed after Spain’s Board of Qualification, Valuation and Export of Spanish Historical Heritage Assets labeled the piece as a rare work done by Picasso after his Rose Period. This led to the piece being classified as non-exportable.

Terra Madre: From Pošip Sur Lie to Wine Tourism

Nestled atop a hill in the Komarna region, visible from the Rizman Winery Rest Stop, you'll find the new winery of Terra Madre. The winery has a scenic view, looking out toward the Adriatic Sea and the Pelješac peninsula. Like the other members of the K7 Cooperative, their vineyards are organic, the soils are rocky with lots of limestone, and many of the vineyards are on steep slopes.

During our visit to Terra Madre, we met Davor Martinović (on the left), one of the partners of the winery, and Marko Sauman (on the right), their enologist, with 21 years of experience. They are standing on their terrace, which overlooks the Adriatic, and is a wonderful place to enjoy some wine and experience the natural beauty of Croatia.

Terra Madre is a subsidiary of an agricultural equipment company, and it is owned by three partners,  one the previously mentioned Davor Martinović, who oversees the winery. Seven children of the three partners also work at the winery, so it is very much a family-run operation, with Marko being the main employee who isn't part of the family.

In 2008, they purchased their first vineyards, and had their first harvest two years later, in 2010, though their first commercial harvest wouldn't be until 2011. They initially hired an Israeli firm to construct their irrigation system, and this was the first time the Israelis had ever worked on such steep slopes. Previously, Terra Madre produced wine at a facility on the Pelješac peninsula, and in 2017, they started production at their new winery in Komarna, opening their tasting room in 2018.

They have about 17 hectares of organic vineyards, growing about 125,000 vines, including 75% Plavac Mali, 10% Pošip, 10% Syrah, and 5% other grapes like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. They have no current plans to increase the size of their vineyards, though it's possible they might eventually slightly increase the amount of hectares. Annually, they produce about 80,000 bottles.

At the time of our visit, the Pošip had already been harvested about 15 days before, and they were currently harvesting the grapes for their Rosé wines. It was thought it would be another ten more days before they started harvesting their Plavac Mali.

They constructed this cross on their property, replicating the cross that was constructed in Medjugorje in 1933/1934. The primary reason for the cross is to give thanks, though there's an interesting story about the Medjugorje cross. The region has once been plagued by heavy rains and hail, but after the cross was erected, they were never again bothered by hail. In Komarna, hail isn't common, but when it occurs, it can be quite destructive.

Marko explaining about their oak program, which includes French, American, and Slavonian barrels, generally sized at 500 liters.

Our wine tasting began with the 2017 Terra Madre Plavac Mali Rosé, which is primarily Plavac Mali but with the addition of a little Syrah. To make the Rosé, they use only free run juice, and no skin contact, because Plavac Mali provides lots of color on its own. With a 12% ABV, it is fresh and dry, crisp and easy-drinking, with pleasant red fruit flavors. Enjoy on its own or with seafood, light chicken dishes, or fried foods.

Terra Madre makes two different styles of Pošip, one which is fresh, with low alcohol, and the other which is more complex, having aged in oak. The first style, the 2018 Terra Madre Pošip Premium, makes up about 90% of their Pošip production. The wine is 85% Pošip and 15% Chardonnay, has a 13% ABV, and has a fresh taste, with plenty of crisp acidity, and flavors of citrus, especially lemon, with a touch of green apple. It is an excellent seafood wine

The 2017 Terra Madre Pošip Sur Lie is aged on its lees for about 6 months in new oak barrels, though the next vintage will use one-year old oak. It has been blended with 50% fresh Pošip Premium, has a 13% ABV, and definitely presents a different flavor profile. The oak is noticeable on the nose, and on the palate, there is a more complex taste, with flavors of toast, vanilla, and citrus. It was an interesting wine, though I preferred the fresh Pošip.

Terra Madre produces two types of Plavac Mali, Barrique and Premium, and dependent on the vintage, these wines include about 15% of Syrah and/or Cabernet Sauvignon. This is done to differentiate their wines from those producing 100% Plavac Mali. In some respects, this seems to make the wines a bit more fruit forward, reminiscent to a degree of a more California style.

The 2015 Terra Madre Plavac Mali Barrique, with a 14% ABV, was aged for about one year in used oak. It was easy drinking, with dominant spicy notes, flavors of black fruit and a little red cherry. This wine would pair well with burgers and lamb, hearty dishes and grilled meats.

The 2016 Terra Madre Plavac Mali Premium, with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, a 14% ABV and which spent 12 months in oak, was a bigger and bolder wine. It wasn't too tannic, with rich, sweet black fruit flavors, a bit less spice, and more complexity than the barrique. This is more of steak wine, and should age well. We also got to taste the 2017 Premium, which hasn't been bottled yet and they are unsure when it will be ready to be released. It was much bigger and more tannic, and certainly needs more time to develop before release. It has potential so will be fascinating to taste it once it is finally released.

The last wine we tasted was their "best wine," the 2011 Plavac Mali, and they only have about 400 bottles remaining in their archive. It is from their first harvest, has a 15.6% ABV, and an inky black color. The wine was well preserved, with notes of black cherry and dark spice, the tannins firm and well integrated, and a silkiness to its taste. Definitely a winner.

After our tasting, we enjoyed a delicious meal of domestic lamb, with crisp skin and tender, flavorful meat. I love lamb so this was a delight, and it paired very well with the different Plavac Mali wines.

Terra Madre's plans for the future includes trying to attract more wine tourism. This project will involve constructing some guest houses and a marina. As others in the K7 Cooperative are also interested in enhancing wine tourism, this could easily be the next level for the Komarna region. It's a beautiful and compelling region, with excellent wines, so it's a place that wine tourists should be encouraged to visit.

All About Croatia

"Croatia is a country of great potential and greater opportunities."
--Understanding Croatia: A Collection of Essays on Croatian Identity by Božo Skoko

How much do you know about Croatia, its wine, cuisine, history, and culture? Maybe you know Croatia was used to film certain locations in the Game of Thrones TV series. Maybe you've read of various celebrities vacationing at the beaches on the Dalmatian coast. However, your knowledge may not extend much beyond that. Hopefully, more people will become aware of the fascinating aspects of Croatia, and seek out its food and wine, and maybe even journey there.

Located on the Balkan peninsula, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, the Republic of Croatia is a member of the European Union and it borders the countries of Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Montenegro. Croatia, with a population of 4.5 million, has become a popular tourist destination, and nearly 20 million tourists, a a record-breaking number, visited in 2018 with all signs that 2019 will be even greater.

In September 2019, I made a journey to Croatia, part of a media trip, traveling from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, and numerous locations between those two cities. Over the course of ten days, I experienced much, from wineries to restaurants, from museums to ancient Roman ruins, from the beach to the mountains, from medieval fortifications to a farmers market. It was informative and fun, delicious and educational. I ate and drank plenty, though got ample exercise through extensive walking. My memorable experiences have spawned numerous story ideas and will lead to even more in the future.

Currently, I've posted 18 articles on Croatian wines, food, history & culture, totaling about 25,000 words, with more articles planned for the near future. I've also referenced Croatian wines, generally as a category, in other articles on my blog. I strongly suspect some of the Croatian wines I've reviewed in these articles may end up on my 2019 Annual Top Ten Wine lists. Plus, some of my other Croatian experiences may end on other of my 2019 Annual Favorite lists.

To help bring more visibility to Croatia, I've compiled all of the links to my Croatian wine, food, history & culture posts into this single article. This post will be a repository of those articles, listed in chronological order from the newest to oldest, and I'll update it when I write a new article about Croatia. This should be helpful to my readers who want to delve deeper into the fascinating country of Croatia.

It’s Good for the Mind" signature event at Kings Dining & Entertainment in Lynnfield on Wednesday, November 13th from 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm. The event is designed by young brain injury survivor, Meredith Casey, to celebrate how kindness is a cure for so many things and can impact your overall health -including your brain health, mental health and the well-being of others.

Meredith and her family founded the Mighty Meredith Project - an organization established to raise awareness of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and the impact of having a hidden illness/disease, with the message of kindness as the beacon of the organization. Meredith hit her head in December 2015. After months of attempting to recover from an initial diagnosis of a concussion, it was also determined Meredith had a blood clot in her brain, due to the head trauma. The associated head trauma has required Meredith to no longer participate in many of the activities she came to love and has changed her outlook on life. The Mighty Meredith Project was created after Meredith settled into a new life of living with traumatic brain injury.

Combined with the kindness of the community, outpouring of support during a difficult time and the need for Meredith to re-define her “normal”, Meredith wanted to start an organization to help others who may be caught in a similar situation. Her mission is simple:

Tickets to the Mighty Meredith / World Kindness Day fundraiser include

Rizman Winery is the pioneer who started it all in the Komarna appellation, the first winery in that region and the prime impetus behind the establishment of the K7 Cooperative, which is now an association of seven wineries, including Rizman Winery, Saints Hill Wines, Volarević Wines, Terra Madre, Modro-zelena, Neretvanski Branitelj and Deak Family Farm. With football in their hearts, and wine in their ancestry, the Štimac family took a significant risk in planting vineyards in Komarna but the growing success in this region has shown them to be visionaries.

Our first visit to Rizman was actually at their Rest Stop, located on the state road D8, between Opuzen and Klek. This rest stop is a combination shop and wine bar, with a killer view of the Komarna region, including vineyards belonging to Rizman and Terra Madre, as well as the Pelješac peninsula. There is a small shop that sells wine from the various Komarna wineries, olive oil, souvenirs, and fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms. At the wine bar, you can buy a glass of Rizman wine ($3-$4.50 US) or get a Flight of three wines ($9 US). Plus, they sell some food, such as Dalmatian Fritule (a pastry like donutholes) or a Sandwich, with prosciutto, cheese, and tomato. You can sit on their patio, drinking and eating, as you enjoy the scenic vista.

As the road to the Rizman Winery is not easily accessible for larger vehicles, this Rest Stop is the best place for buses and large groups to stop and experience the wines of Rizman. It is also conveniently located, making it easy to stop there, even for a brief visit, before continuing your journey.

This is one of the views you will find at the Rest Stop, looking down at some of the Rizman vineyards, with Pelješac peninsula peeking out in the upper left hand corner.

The history of winemaking in the Štimac family extends back to the early 20th century, to their great-grandfather Mihovil Mijo Popich, who was known by the nickname Rizman. He lived in the town of Opuzen, in the Neretva valley, a place well known for tangerine production. He planted grape vines, which were later destroyed by disease, and Rizman decided to temporarily move to the U.S. Upon his return in 1918, he planted a vineyard once more, making his own wine, and was assisted by his son and grandson. He continued making wine until the 1960s. Wine making is thus in the blood of the Štimacs, so it's not surprising that the family once again ventured into this industry.

Prior to establishing their Komarna winery, the Štimac family was already well known for its connection to football (soccer to those in the U.S.). Igor Štimac was a professional footballer and still works as a football coach. Damir Štimac is an attorney and worked as a football agent. With their brother Mihovil, they initially entered winemaking as a hobby but it soon became a passion for them, leading to their more serious efforts around 2009/2010. To put the emphasis on the wine, and not their sports fame, they chose not to use their name, Štimac, for the winery. Instead, they chose the name Rizman, an homage to their great-grandfather.

They began the first steps to the creation of their winery back in 2006, as they carefully selected a location, analyzed the soils, and consulted with various experts. Although they mentioned this was initially just a hobby, it sure seems like they were serious from the amount of research and analysis they conducted right from the start. Their first products were olive oil, and they finally planted vineyards in 2008. From the beginning, they adopted an organic philosophy, one they would later promote to all the members of the K7 association. In 2014, they completed the construction of a state of the art winery.

When other wineries chose to come to the Komarna region, the Štimacs successfully pushed for a united association, the K7, and Mihovil is currently the President. With only a small number of wineries, it has been relatively easy for them to successfully work together, and they basically all agree on major decisions. They obviously share many of the same concerns, and want to bring more wine tourism to the region. United, they have a better chance at succeeding together on these objectives.
The Rizman winery is the largest in Komarna, with 22 hectares of vineyards and 7 hectares of olive trees. It is certified organic, as are all of the Komarna vineyards. About 90% of their vineyards are planted with indigenous Croatian grapes, including Plavac Mali, Pošip, and Tribidag. They also grow a small proportion of international's grapes, including Tempranillo, Syrah, Chardonnay and Viognier. In addition, they've planted some experimental vines, indigenous grapes including Plavac Mali Gray (clone), Pošip Black, Dobričić (a parent of Plavac Mali), and Bratkovina Blatska Bijela (a white grape from the island of Korčula), though it will be about two years before they can harvest any of those grapes.

The vineyards extend to an altitude of 250 meters, sometimes on inclines as much as 30%, and reach almost all the way down to the water. The soil is primarily limestone, and the planting of vineyards required significant work, and cost, in breaking down large boulders and rock outcroppings. The Rizman estate has limited room for growth, maybe only 1-3 hectares which could be additionally planted with vineyards. They don't purchase any grapes, using only what they grow themselves.

The Rizman Winery produces about 60,000-80,000 bottles annually, and currently export to 6-7 countries, sending about 6,000 bottles to the U.S. Locally, they are very dominant on the shelves of wine shops in Dubrovnik.

Their winery is aesthetically pleasing, with a nice outside patio, and an elegant interior tasting room. Besides simple wine tastings, you can also make a reservation for a wine-paired lunch or dinner. Their chef, who is self taught, once had a restaurant in Dalmatia, and now is creating some amazing dishes at Rizman. We enjoyed an excellent dinner during our visit, one which paired well with the various wines.

At the winery, Damir Štimac led us through our wine tasting, and he was personable, knowledgeable, witty, and passionate. It was clear that wine now consumed him, that he was completely immersed in the business of the winery, wanting to produce top-notch wines. Later on, I also had a chance to speak with Mihovil Štimac, to learn more about their winery and Komarna.

Rizman makes eight varieties of olive oil, from indigenous Croatian varieties including Oblica, Levantinka, Lastovka, and Drobnica, and Italian varieties including Leccino, Pendolino, Frantoi, and Coratina. The olive groves are organic, hand-harvested, and the olives are processed, cold-pressed, the same day they are harvested. They only make about 1000 liters, but have a goal of producing 2-3,000 liters.

At the start of our dinner, there were Ston Oysters! Briny deliciousness and more meals should start with these oysters.

There was also a beautifully plated dish that included a local oyster, topped by a lemon granita, a local mussel, topped by spices & veggies, and a scoop of pâté. The oyster/granita was excellent, the acidity of the lemon balanced by the briny oyster. I could easily devour a dozen of them. The mussel was tasty too, and the pâté was creamy, with a compelling earthy aspect. A great way to start our dinner.

Two wines were paired with these starters, the first being the 2018 Rizman Pošip, their "Fresh" Pošip, which sees no oak. To maintain the freshness of this wine, the grapes are also harvested at night and processed immediately afterwards. They commonly produce 7-14,000 bottles of this wine, though in 2018, that number rose to 15,000. With a 13% ABV, a touch of Viognier was added to the Pošip, and the wine was aged in the bottle for several months. I found the wine to be fresh and crisp, with bright lemon notes, a floral hint, and an underlying minerality. A great pairing with the oysters, especially the one with the granita. Mihovil stated that Pošip is easy to sell, especially as a summer wine.

The 2018 Rizman Nonno is a blend of 80% Pošip and 20% Chardonnay, and it's fermented and aged in French barrique on the lees for about 6-7 months. The grapes come from a single special plot in the easternmost section of the vineyard, and they are harvested later than the grapes in the "fresh" Pošip. Only about 2-3,000 bottles of this wine are produced. It is a richer and creamier wine, elegant and complex, and the oak doesn't overwhelm. There are bright citrus flavors and hints of spice. My personal preference was for the Fresh Pošip but I enjoyed this oak-aged one too.

Next up, there were plump and tasty Shrimp in a sweet and spicy sauce. A bit messy to pull the meat out of the shells but well worth the taste.

Our next wine was the 2018 Rizman Rusula, a Rosé which is made from first run juice of 90% Plavac Mali, with about 10% Syrah, and where the grapes were macerated for about 20 minutes. Rusula is an old Dalmatian word that means "rosé," a link to their heritage. With a 12.5% ABV, this Rosé possessed bright red fruits, cherry and strawberry, with crisp acidity, and a very pleasing finish. Easy drinking and refreshing, this would be an excellent summer wine, or paired with light summer fare.

Our next food course was a traditional Dalmatian dish, Crni Rižot, Black Risotto, which is commonly made with cuttlefish or squid, our dish being made with cuttlefish. Such an earthy and scrumptious dish, with tender pieces of cuttlefish, and rice that was cooked just right.

Onto a bigger and bolder wine. The 2016 Rizman Brime Plavac Mali is their basic Plavac Mali, which presents an expression of fruit. With a 13% ABV, it spends about one year in oak, and is fresh and bold, yet restrained and well-balanced. Tasty black fruit flavors, hints of spice, and a touch of earthiness. Good acidity, a moderately lengthy finish, and definitely an easy drinking wine, which would do well with burgers to pizza, as well as the Black Risotto. Mihovil stated that Plavac Mali is more of a challenge to sell, and needs to be recognized more overseas. It might be well known in Croatia, but other countries don't know much about the grape.

The 2015 Rizman Primus is also made from Plavac Mali, with a tiny bit of Tempranillo, and it is the first wine the winery ever made, hence the name Primus. They select the best plots for the grapes in this wine, wanting the best Plavac Mali. The wine was aged for about 12 months in American and French oak, including some new oak, and then another 6 months in the bottle. The 2016 Primus will soon be released, and it's said this wine could easily age for 10-15 years. With a 13.5% ABV, this wine is bright and crisp, with a delicious blend of red and black fruits, a spicy backbone, and well-integrated tannins. A lengthy and satisfying finish, plenty of complexity, and this wine would pair well with steak or other hearty dishes.

Onto Tribidag! In Croatia, where the grape originated, it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski, Pribidrag, and Tribidag. However, the grape has traveled around the world, and in Italy it is known as Primitivo while in California it is known as Zinfandel. Yes, Zinfandel which is often seen as an "All American" grape, actually originated in Croatia. It wasn't until 2001 that DNA testing confirmed these facts, though many had long suspected a Croatian connection. Within Croatia, Tribidag, which derives from Greek words meaning "early ripening," was first mentioned as early as the 15th century. Tribidag has been seeing a renewed renaissance within Croatia, and more and more wineries are starting to produce wines from this grape. Wouldn't you love to try a wine made from the original "Zinfandel?"

The 2016 Rizman Tribidag is produced mainly primarily from Tribidag, with up to 15% Tempranillo, and only about 5,000 cases are made. The wine spends about a year in oak, with less new oak than the Plavac Mali. At only 13.5% ABV, this is still a powerful wine, though the tannins are still very manageable. There are more plum and black cherry flavors, with notes of black pepper, and the melange is complex and compelling. The wine is well balanced, with a lingering and pleasing finish. You'll need a hearty dish to accompany this bold and delicious wine. It would be fascinating to taste test this next to a few California Zinfandels.

On their land in Komarna, the Štimac family has a chapel to St. Michael, their family saint, and they celebrate him each year on September 29. This was actually the first building they constructed on there property. A number of the Štimac men, for many generations, have been named after St. Michael, which in Croatian is Mihovil.

They also produce a wine, the 2016 Rizman St. Michael, to honor this important aspect of their lives. This wine isn't made every year, and the concept behind the wine is to showcase their best, a single varietal from a single plot of land. This is also known as the Family Collection, and each bottle is numbered, and only about 3,000 bottles are produced. This vintage, which was released in February 2019, was made from Syrah and the specific varietal can change in different vintages, though they didn't make a St. Michael in 2017. The grapes for this wine are from their youngest vineyard, which was planted in 2013, and the wine was aged in new oak for about 12 months.

This was a powerful and muscular wine, though the tannins didn't overpower. It presented with ripe plum, blackberry, and dark spice notes, with a hint of chocolate and leather. It was only 14% ABV, with a long, long finish that tantalized your palate. It's still young and I think it has much potential with greater age on it.

In their cellar, we also got to sample a barrel sample of 2018 Tribidag, coming in at 17.2% ABV, and which could be the basis for a 2018 St. Michaels. It was a huge wine and definitely needs much more time in the barrel.

For dessert, there was cheese & prosciutto, as well as a Semifreddo, which was creamy with tasty notes of chocolate. At this point, we tasted the 2011 Rizman Primus, gaining an idea of how well Plavac Mali can age. This was completely impressive, elegant and complex, well balanced and silky.  Each sip seemed to bring something different to my palate, and it was pure deliciousness. Plavac Mali is definitely a grape with much potential. Highly recommended!

What's in the future for Rizman Winery? I can't yet discuss a couple of their planned projects but I can tell you that they would like to create a wine hotel, to promote wine tourism in Komarna, to keep visitors in the region for more than a single day. There are currently only 4 wine hotels in Croatia, and increasing and promoting wine tourism should be an objective for all of the regions of Croatia. It will also be interesting to see what comes of the indigenous grapes in their experimental vineyard. Will they produce compelling wines?

As I've mentioned before, the modern wine industry in Croatia is still relatively young, and the Komarna appellation is their newest wine region. Despite its youth, the Komarna wineries have shown much potential, already providing excellent wines, and a debt is owed to the Štimac family of Rizman Winery for leading the way and bringing the seven wineries together. And now I wish I had a bottle of the 2011 Rizman Primus to sip and savor.

Welcome message

The Vasco da Gama Movement invites you to be part of the first PanEuropean meeting for Trainees and Junior Family Doctors !

We are delighted to welcome you to the first Pan European meeting for trainees and junior Family Doctors, the Vasco da Gama Movement Forum, which will be held in the city of Barcelona on 7th-8th February 2014. After organising 8 succesful European PreConferences and co-organising 2 fantastic World PreConferences ahead of the Wonca Conferences between 2005-2013, and alongside preparations for the 2014 VdGM PreConference in Lisbon in July, the Vasco da Gama Movement is ready to take the next step !
We are organizing the VdGM Forum, a scientific conference rich in contents, under the title “One Strong Voice for the Family Doctors of the 21st Century”. The programme will be focused on the topics of the Future of Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Out-of-Hours Services, Career Development, Research Skills and Emerging Technologies.
Prior to the VdGM Forum, a vocational exchange will be organized for selected participants, who will have the opportunity to observe GP/FM practices (offices) in Barcelona and learn more about the national organisation of primary care.
We strongly believe that the progress of our movement depends on our colleagues, on whether they share our cause, and on the continuity of our platform; a platform in which members meet regularly and they have the chance to establish and develop good professional relationships, which are essential for launching exciting and aspirational new projects. Alongside trainees and newly qualified (5 years) General Practitioners / Family Doctors, we also welcome senior GP/FD, other specialities but also patients and undergraduate medical students.
For this very reason we are working with great enthusiasm so that you can enjoy a unique scientific and cultural programme.
We warmly invite you all to join us for an amazing conference; we are looking forward to meeting you in Barcelona!

The petition has benefited from the involvement of the Minister for Public Health and is progressing well. After her thyroid was removed in 2006 for Graves disease, Lorraine's health declined by an alarming degree, despite being under the care of an Endocrinologist. Her GP was desperate to help but the system of deferring to the consultant and guidelines made this almost impossible. She recovered her health by working alongside her GP but outwith the established Endocrinology model. Gathering evidence for the petition reinforced that the treatment model for chronic diseases is failing many thousands of patients who go on to develop worsening health and a reliance on polypharmacy. She is optimistic that putting patients at the center of their treatment will help to change this, improving patient's health and enabling GP's to have more autonomy in the patient's care.

Preconference: #DesignThinking for Primary Care Workshop

Design Thinking is about believing we can make a difference, and having an intentional process in order to get to new, relevant solutions that create positive impact.
  • It’s human-centred: it begins from deep empathy and understanding of needs and motivations of people
  • It’s collaborative: several great minds are always stronger when solving a challenge than just one.
  • It’s optimistic: Design Thinking is the fundamental belief that we all can create change.
  • It’s experimental: it gives you permission to fail and to learn from your mistakes, because you come up with new ideas, get feedback on them, then iterate.
It has five phases that help navigate the development from identifying a design challenge to finding and building a solution.
The Five Phases of the Design Thinking Process
The Vasco da Gama Movement is developing a fantastic workshop that will enable you to learn firsthand how Design Thinking can be used to innovate in health and healthcare. During this workshop, teams will work together to explore and create solutions to real healthcare challenges.
Design Thinking #1
The participants will work on problems identified and will use the Design Thinking methods to gain a deep understanding of the problem and develop innovative ‘human-centred’ solutions (ie. solutions that truly meet the needs of users). Methods will include user-interviews, observation, brainstorming and rapid prototyping, with the aim of creating solutions that combine human desirability and usability with business viability and technological feasibility.
The workshop will take place in Barcelona just before the 1st #VdGMForum, on 7th February from 9am to 2.30pm. There is only a limited number of places for this workshop. The participation in the workshop will be free of charge. Medical students, other healthcare professionals, people from other professional background and patients are welcome to apply for a place.
The deadline for applications is Tuesday 7th January.
Design Thinking #2

Health2.0 wants to encourage projects related to health, developed by startups or individuals, offering them visibility, while inspiring others

This Preconference Satellite Meetup will be held on Thursday 6th February 2014 at 7pm, just a day before the #VdGMForum. A map to the location is available here. The participation is completely free, but we kindly ask you to register here in order to manage the resources that we need for this meetup.

The Programme includes:

  3. Round table of local GPs who will tell us about the use of 2.0 technologies in their day to day, what's available out there and what's missing.
Primary care represents a big market segment with special needs, that are not necessarily covered yet by the new technologies. Let's try to fill that gap.
The confirmed family doctor panelists are:
  • Dra Mireia Sans
  • Dra Dolors Ruiz
  • Dra Adriana Bataller
  • Dr Miguel Angel Mayer
  • Dr Monica Moro

We would like to thank the organizers Aline Noizet, Frederic Llordachs, Jordi Serrano Pons and Sophie Park for their enthusiastic support and for making this meeting happen.
