Costa Rica soovib tihendada Eestiga IKT-alast koostööd

 Cache
Eestis visiidil olev Costa Rica teaduse, tehnoloogia ja telekommunikatsiooni minister Luis Adrián Salazar Solís allkirjastas eile Majandus- ja Kommunikatsiooniministeeriumis koos väliskaubandus- ja IT-minister Kert Kingoga vastastikuse mõistmise ja koostöö lepingu kogemuste jagamiseks digiriigi ja -majanduse vallas. Tegu on esimesega omataoliste seas Ladina-Ameerika piirkonnas. Costa Rica on käivitanud riigis laialdase digitaalsete muutuste strateegia, mille eesmärk on kiirendada avaliku sektori digitaliseerimist ja tugevdada küberturvalisust avalikes asutustes. Minister Kert Kingo sõnul avaldavad Eesti digiarengus tehtud edusammud, eriti seoses digitaalmajanduse ja e-riigi teenustega, Costa Ricale muljet ja nad tahaksid väga Eestiga ses vallas koostööd teha. „Loodame, et koostöölepingu sõlmimine avab uusi võimalusi Eesti IT ettevõtetele ulatuslikul Ladina-Ameerika turul,“ lisas minister. See selliste koostöölepete eesmärk ongi - kasvatada Eesti e-teenuste eksporti,“ lõpetas Sikkut.

 Cache

COLUMNA SIN NOMBRE Pablo Jair Ortega + Héctor Yunes, contundente mensaje.

Enhorabuena, bro.   @pablojair

Dental Tourism-Costa Rica

 Cache

So, this is trip three to this beautiful country, and my second implant. I am such a fan of Goodness Dental that I figured I’d do my blog to share the word. When we first came to Costa Rica a year ago to begin the process we’d gotten a very high estimate of what a dental implant could cost in the United States, and there was no guarantee that the price wouldn’t go up if there were complications. The first thing people ask me is whether or not it was safe—and the answer for us has been, yes. They send an English-speaking driver to the airport to pick you up and deliver you to your hotel or Airbnb. They arrange Uber for transit to and from any dental appointments. The second question asked is about the quality. The staff is friendly, punctual, and they really care. The quality of both the doctors and the equipment is top-notch and the work they do is guaranteed… We discovered Goodness Dental when we’d expressed an interest in dental tourism and an acquaintance raved about this place. So, I want to rave too just in case one of you is need of dental work Continue Reading →

Business Initiatives Manager, Arts and Cultural

 Cache
About Blackbaud: At Blackbaud, were here to help good take over. We lead uniquely at the intersection point of technology and social good, providing cloud software, services, expertise, and data intelligence that empowers and connects people to drive impact for social good. We serve the entire social good community, which includes nonprofits, higher education institutions, K-12 schools, healthcare organizations, faith communities, arts and cultural organizations, foundations, companies, and the individual change agents who support them. With millions of users in 100+ countries, our vision is to power an Ecosystem of Good that builds a better world. Our customers are passionate about making the world a better place, and were inspired by the opportunity to help them raise resources, deliver programs, manage operations, and understand their outcomes. Position Overview: Every Business Unit within Blackbaud has a vision, objectives, and a path it wishes to take. With increased focus on our most important Business priorities, Arts and Cultural is well positioned to continue providing accretive revenue growth. Business initiatives are the means through which a vision is translated into practice. Within Blackbaud, the glue to making our BU + COE model work includes having each BU provide direct ownership of the initiatives most important to its success. Leaders of business initiatives are responsible for putting plans and goals into action, as well as managing, overseeing, and advancing the Verticals short- and long-term priorities. Leaders in this role drive transformation and alignment within the organization in a highly skilled manner. Importantly, these individuals work closely with Blackbaud COEs, bridging the gap between Horizontal COE focus and Vertical Business Unit priorities. Said differently, the two work closely together to ensure alignment to advance the growth of the vertical and success of Blackbaud overall. These Managers are tasked with executing programs, ideas, and tactics to improve the business and help move the Vertical forward. They also lead the process to operationalize our annual planning and work closely with other senior leaders, allowing the BU General Managers to focus on the long-range strategy of the Vertical and the necessary day-to-day sales execution within the Vertical. They must ensure all communication is clear and may oversee budgeting and managing funds for the Business Unit. Networking is important in this position to build beneficial relationships within the industry and within other COEs to create a more efficient and successful business environment. Individuals in these roles work closely with both the Business Unit and our COEs, bridging the gap between the two to advance Blackbauds growth. The role is also a significant driver of talent development, aiding the company in our goal of developing leaders with a broad, Vertical view of our Business Units to grow the next generation of General Management leadership skills. Managers of business initiatives must be articulate, decisive, and able to multitask, manage time, and work under pressure to meet deadlines. Summary of Key Accountabilities: The Manager, Business Initiatives role is a leadership position that functions as a program manager that enables the delivery of the business units growth initiatives. Typically, these initiatives a result from the Long Range Plan or the Annual Operating Plan and are cross function both within the Business unit and throughout Blackbaud. For example, while the BBMS COE broadly handles Merchant Services priorities, they rely on the Business Units to provide Initiative leadership unique to a given Vertical (i.e. in the case of Arts and Cultural, BBMS working with the BU Initiatives Leader to identify other Software targets to wire up BBMS to and leading, through vertical market expertise, the pursuit and execution of that activity). Another example would be leading our Annual Operating Plan. The Business Initiatives leader works closely with Corporate Strategy, RDO and other groups to serve as the Vertical representative needed to size, support and operationalize specific AOP priorities. The role provides bandwidth to the Vertical GM allowing the GM to focus on the strategic, while the business initiatives leaders focuses on the more tactical. This position has a strong operating requirement and is tasked with driving outcomes that are not otherwise owned throughout the company (for example BBMS declining account contact, which is a BU responsibility currently without focus or ownership). The role enables the success of our BU + COE operating model and reports directly to the President of the Business Unit and is a key member of the BU Executive Leadership Team (Executive Committee). The leader will develop, oversee and implement programs and projects that support the companys vision and short and long term plans. These initiatives will change from time to time but may include: 1. Ownership and accountability to operationalize, execute and deliver on the prioritized key initiatives of the Business Unit 2. Creation and oversight of meaningful Vertical Partnerships to accelerate growth. Works closely with our Partner COE who manages contractual relationships with the Partners, while the Business Initiatives leader in the Vertical enables market specific partnerships by operationalizing vertical specific plans, providing navigational assistance within the Vertical, and coordinating conversations with key vertical staff. 3. Accountability for the success and growth of our BBMS Payments business, within a given Business Unit, to deliver accretive growth. Accountable for maintaining accretive Payments growth within a Vertical, operationalizing BU actions to capture High Value Accounts, and develops Vertical specific strategies to expand BBMS revenues within the Vertical. Whereas BBMS thinks horizontally and globally, the Business Initiatives leader applies Vertical specific tactics to drive success. 4. Personal engagement with key, high impact Clients for long term value and strategic input. Whereas our Customer Success COE provides programmatic support to the customer base, the Business Initiatives leader performs regular Discovery with the Verticals top customers to inform the Vertical strategy of the Business Unit. The Business Initiatives leader possesses deep vertical domain expertise and empowerment that, when matched with the horizontal and programmatic expertise of the Customer Success COE, enables customer delight. 5. Drives the Vertical specific program to migrate RE7 and FE 7 to NXT; Marshalls resources to accelerate back to base share of wallet, which is a Vertical specific activity that currently falls between the cracks of our COE / BU operating model. 6. Supports the GM in development of the Long Range Plan (LRP) and provide direct leadership/operationalization of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) to guide the strategic direction of a given Blackbaud Business Unit. Details of Key Accountabilities: Ownership of Vertical Initiatives Direct ownership and accountability for the executive of the highest priorities within an assigned Business Unit, creating alignment between BU and COE to enable success. Responsible for operationalizing each initiative and working closely with others, both internally and externally, to ensure success of each initiative (highly accountable). Develops Operational Key Results (OKRs) to measure progress and communicate that progress transparently across the organization Modifies tactics, as needed, to ensure the successful execution of each strategic priority Partnership Development and Execution Develops Business Unit partner strategy identifying key partners, the scope of desired partnerships, business impact and technical strategy, then works closely with partner COE for execution. Serves as the Business Unit Liaison to Blackbaud Partner Management, RDO and other internal teams to ensure the effectiveness of desired Business Unit partnerships. Lead ongoing Governance meetings with key partners to monitor progress/results and implement corrective action when needed to deliver beneficial outcomes Working with Vertical Marketing, enable Arts and Cultural Associates with the necessary understanding to promote Partnerships in a mutually beneficial manner Payments Revenue Growth Accountability for the Business Unit Payments with a requirement to maintain growth of BBMS accretive (double digits) Identify High Value Prospect Accounts (HVAs) and own the accountability to execute a strategy to capture these HVAs as processing clients Analyze, on an ongoing basis, key BBMS trends including Rate x Volume reporting on a bi-weekly basis Identify top performing (processing) BBMS clients in the vertical and ensure appropriate company resources are stewarding the success of these clients in order to reduce risk of churn Identify low performing clients and personally engage to drive the necessary turn around in processing volume in order to minimize financial risk to Blackbaud Develop strategic relationships with Software providers in each Vertical space and be accountable for wiring up BBMS to these providers as a strategy of accelerating Payments revenue within the Vertical Customer Engagement Serve as the Business Unit senior leader (member of the EC) who personally engages in key client escalations and provides ownership to remedy the escalated situation, coordinating resources across Blackbaud when necessary Working closely with our Customer Success team and other COEs, ensure alignment of resources to Business Unit Strategic Priorities Monitor for risk in our client base and implement measures to reduce the overall risk profile of our customer set Directly engage with key at risk clients to ensure retention and long-term success LRP and AOP Planning Participates with the BU General Manager in LRP planning and leads the Annual Operating Plan process for the Business Unit Provides a critical strategic perspective as part of the vertical leadership team as well as actively participates in other senior management forums Builds close working relationships with RDO, Customer Ops, Customer Success, Marketing and other COEs to ensure alignment of LRP priorities Represent the Vertical in companywide LRP and AOP interdependency and read out strategy sessions with Blackbaud senior leadership Operationalize LRP and AOP commitments and provide regular updates as a member of the BU Executive Committee on progress and any necessary course correction Required Experience: Deep domain expertise with a minimum of 7 years of experience Demonstrated ability to work well in a matrixed environment, supporting the charters of our COEs through vertical expertise Executive presence and ability to deliver results through power of influence Expert understanding of Profit and Loss (P & L) management with 5+ years previous P & L management background Strategic agility and ability to work across the Blackbaud organization to accomplish strategic goals Strong communications skills, both written and verbal. Quitar borde de imagen

 Cache
Saludos.

Comment on Dealing With Bed Bugs When You Travel by laura

 Cache
Hi ! We really need your help. We recently in costa rica suffered a bed bug infestation in a fancy hotel that we carried around for 2 weeks. We washed everything but probably not good enough. Finally after a month, we were entirely covered. My partner had 180 bites (the bugs preferred him) and 50 myself. We were so weak from the sleep deprivement and the bites infections that we ended up in the Hospital. They’confirmed it was bed bugs and told us to wash everything again. We went into a cleaning frenzy, moved hotel, washed EVERYTHING Hot and dried hot. (The bags, the vanity case, the clothes...) I personnally boiled the clothes we had on ourselves, and cooked our shoes 200 degrees for 45 minutes. I sprayed our computer and books with DEET. I checked everything as a paranoid girl and never saw a thing. Never saw an egg, never saw a bug. Nothing. (Spent maybe 5 hours total checking). We had some quiet time, moved hotel again, and today (5days later) the bites are back. It is not from the hotel as I checked. Now the bites happen through the day, as if the bugs were in our clothes. I was even bitten on my leg, through the day, when I was wearing mini shorts. Checked the clothes, nothing. We boiled them again, to be sure. We are getting completely mad, especially as we cannot see any of them, and as people have no cure for us but what we already did. What shall we do ? I read 100 websites already and i am powerless. Do you know if there is another specie of bugs that would bite like bed bugs but be invisible ? How could the bed bugs survive the boiling ? We are so helpless, if you have any idea, please let us know. We thank you dearly

- Posibles alineaciones

Saprissa: Aaron Cruz, Aubrey David, Alexander Robinson, Roy Miller, Ricardo Blanco; Michael Barrantes, Marvin Angulo, Christian Bolaños; Randall Lean, Johan Venegas y Manfred Ugalde.

Entrenador: Walter Centeno.

Motagua: Jonathan Rougier; Juan Pablo Montes, Marcelo Pereira, Denil Maldonado, Omar Elvir; Emilio Izaguirre, Reinieri Mayorquín, Matías Galvaliz, Kevin López; Marco Tulio Vega y Marcelo Estigarribia.

Nuestra madre recuerda día a día a nuestro niño.

Global trends and challenges

More than 1 per cent of people across the planet right now are caught up in major humanitarian crises. The international humanitarian system is more effective than ever at meeting their needs – but global trends including poverty, population growth and climate change are leaving more people than ever vulnerable to the devastating impacts of conflicts and disasters.

Humanitarian needs are increasing despite global economic and development gains. In the past decade, the world has made profound development progress. Between 2008 and 2015, the number of people living in extreme poverty fell from 1.2 billion to 736 million. The world is also richer than ever before: global GDP rose from $63.4 trillion in 2008 to $80.7 trillion in 2017.
But in recent years, more than 120 million people each year have needed urgent humanitarian assistance and protection. There are more crises, affecting more people, and lasting longer today than a decade ago. Most humanitarian crises are not the product of any single factor or event, but of the interaction between natural hazards, armed conflict and human vulnerability.

People’s vulnerability to crises is not just about where they live, but also about how they live.
Poverty, inequality, population growth, urbanization and climate change can erode people’s resilience and make them more susceptible to shocks. Although development gains are being made, progress has been uneven. The rate of extreme poverty remains high in low-income countries and in countries affected by conflict. Crises have disproportionate consequences for the poor: people exposed to natural hazards in the poorest nations are at least seven times more likely to die from them than those in the richest nations.

Fragile and conflict-affected areas are growing faster and urbanizing more rapidly than the rest of the world

In the past five years, the world’s population has grown by 400 million people, from 7.2 billion in 2014 to 7.6 billion in 2017. Although global population growth has slowed compared with previous decades, the rate has been uneven. Today, an estimated 2 billion people live in fragile and conflict affected areas of the word, where they are extremely vulnerable to the impact of conflicts and disasters. This number is projected to increase, as the population in these areas is growing twice as fast as the rest of the world, with an annual growth rate of 2.4 per cent, compared with 1.2 per cent globally. And the urban population in fragile areas grows by 3.4 per cent each year, compared with the world average of 2 per cent. These trends can compound resource scarcity and increase vulnerability to disasters. Urban population density can also amplify the impact of disasters and conflicts. In 2017, when explosive weapons were used in populated areas, 92 per cent of casualties were civilians, compared with 20 per cent in other areas. The populations of countries affected by fragility, conflict and violence are also younger than the global average. Whereas the proportion of the world’s population under 14 years of age has been steadily declining to about 25 per cent today, the average for countries in fragile situations is 40 per cent. As a result, one in every four children in the world is living in a country affected by conflict or disaster, facing threats of violence, hunger and disease. In 2017, more than 75 million children experienced disruptions to their education because of humanitarian crises, threatening not only their present well-being, but their future prospects as well.

More people are being displaced by conflicts

By the end of 2017, war, violence and persecution had uprooted 68.5 million men, women and children around the world – the highest number on record, and nearly 10 million more people than in 2014. Just over 40 million people were internally displaced by violence within their own countries, and 25.4 million refugees and 3.1 million asylum seekers were forced to flee their countries to escape conflict and persecution. The levels of new displacements far outstrip returns or other solutions. In 2017, 5 million people returned to their areas or countries of origin, but 16.2 million people were newly displaced – an average of one person displaced every two seconds, and the highest level of new displacement on record.

The rise in forced displacement is not the result of an increase in conflicts. In fact, after peaking in 2014, the number of political conflicts worldwide decreased by about 10 per cent, from 424 in 2014 to 385 in 2017, although there are still more conflicts compared with a decade ago (328 in 2007). However, during the same period, the proportion of violent and highly violent conflicts, which are more likely to cause human suffering, destruction and displacement, increased from 53 per cent to 58 per cent of all conflicts worldwide.5 The total economic impact of conflict and violence has also increased, from $14.3 trillion in 2014 to $14.8 trillion in 2017.6 The major share of both the human and economic cost of conflicts is borne by developing countries, which host 85 per cent of refugees.

Key messages

↗ International prices of wheat and maize remained relatively stable in November, reflecting good supply conditions, while export quotations of rice strengthened amid increased buying interest and currency movements.

↗ In East Africa, prices of cereals in November continued to decline in most countries with the ongoing 2017 harvests and were at levels around or below those a year earlier with a few exceptions. By contrast, in the Sudan, prices surged and reached record highs in some markets, mainly underpinned by the sharp depreciation of the Sudanese Pound in the parallel market.

↗ In Central America, after the sharp increases recorded in the previous month, prices of white maize eased in November as market flows returned to normal, after disruption caused by severe rains in the previous month. Good domestic availabilities kept prices at levels below those a year earlier.

Key messages

  • The benchmark US wheat price declined in October mostly because of higher supply prospects while maize quotations firmed due to rain-induced harvest delays. International rice prices strengthened in October, mainly reflecting seasonally tight Japonica and fragrant supplies.

  • In East and West Africa, cereal prices declined in October with the 2017 ongoing or recently-started harvests. However, concerns over crop outputs and civil insecurity kept prices at high levels in some countries, particularly in Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Sudan.

  • In Central America, heavy rains in October led to unseasonal increases in maize and bean prices. They remained, however, at levels well below those a year earlier as a result of adequate domestic supplies, following the overall good outputs in 2016 and the 2017 first season harvests.

Key messages

  • International prices of wheat increased in September mostly because of weather-related concerns, while maize quotations fell further on crop harvest pressure. International rice prices remained generally firm, supported by seasonally tight availabilities of fragrant rice and strong demand for higher quality Indica supplies.

  • In East Africa, prices of cereals remained at levels above those of a year earlier in most countries, particularly in Ethiopia reflecting seasonal tightness amid concerns over the impact of the Fall Armyworm infestation on the main harvest and in South Sudan mainly due to the ongoing conflict.

  • In Asia, prices of rice in Bangladesh increased again in September and reached record highs, with seasonal patterns exacerbated by the reduced 2017 main season output and concerns over the impact of the July-August floods on the second season crop, to be harvested from November.

The best line of defense against invading pathogens in the newborn dairy calf is the immunoglobulins from colostrum that are absorbed in the small intestine. Objective. The objective of this work was to determine the efficiency of absorption of inmunoglobulins G (IgG) in Holstein heifer calves by supplying low and good quality heat-treated calostrum. Materials and methods. The study was carried out from August 2016 to August 2017 in a commercial dairy farm in Las Nubes de Coronado, San José, Costa Rica. First milking colostrum was collected from fifty Holstein cows, placed into plastic containers and separated into two categories (low<50 and high≥50 g of immunoglobulin/l). Colostrum within each category was pooled and mixed to create two unique uniform batches, half of each batch (35 l) was transferred into containers properly identified and frozen until required for feeding (colostrum without heat treatment). The remaining half of each colostrum half was heated to 60 °C and maintained for 30 min in a commercial pasteurizer. The different colostra were analyzed for total coliforms, fecal coliforms and E. coli, fat, crude protein, lactose, total solids and total IgG concentration. Blood samples were obtained from 36 calves and were analyzed for total serum protein, IgG and ºBrix. Results. Heat treatment significantly reduced bacterial population and maintained IgG concentration. Heat treatment significantly increased (P<0.001) total serum IgG concentration regardless of colostrum quality. IgG concentration increased from 15.9 to 23.8 and 3.9 to 8.1 % for the high and low quality group, respectively. Heat treatment also increased apparent efficiency of absorption; there was an increase from 16.0 to 31.1% for the group of calves consuming high quality colostrum and from 12.7 to 32.7% for the group consuming low quality colostrum. Conclusion. Feeding heat-treated colostrum to new born Holstein heifer calves significantly increased apparent efficiency of absorption, therefore, IgG concentration in animals’ blood serum.

Executive: Business Initiatives Manager, Arts and Cultural - Charleston, South Carolina

Castano Defeats Wale Omotoso Due To a Shoulder Injury; Fortuna Stops Cuellar

 Cache

By Rich Lopez

It was an action packed night at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. The event was part of Premier Boxing Champions and it was televised on Fox Sports 1. All four fights that were televised produced fireworks and none of the fights went to distance.

The main event was in the junior middleweight division. Brian Castano (15-0-1, 11 KO’s) of Argentina, defeated Wale Omotoso (28-4, 22 KO’s) of Nigeria, by a 5th round TKO. This was a result due to a shoulder injury sustained by Omotoso. However, Castano was very impressive last night and he overwhelmed Omotoso. Round one was a feel out round for both fighters. Castano was more in control of the round but using an effective jab to back up Omotoso for most of the round. The action picked up in round two and Castano was in charge. He continued to back up Omotoso with his sharp left jab. This time Castano was putting his combinations together well. He was starting to land his right hand and he was landing some good body shots as well. In round three, Castano continued the assault and hammered away at Omotoso. Castano was reeling off right hands and landing left hooks to the chin of Omotoso. The durable Omotoso was taking it and was fighting back, but he was also taking a lot of damage. In round four, Omotoso fought a little better as he was boxing and moving well, but it was not enough to win the round. As round five started, Omotoso seemed to hurt his left shoulder. Castano sensing that Omotoso was hurt, still kept the pressure on by landing hard right hands. At the end of the round, Omotoso could no longer continue the fight due his hurt shoulder. Castano was awarded a TKO victory at 3:00 of round number five. Wale Omotoso, who goes by the nickname “Lucky Boy,” was not so lucky in this fight. With the victory, we can see Castano against the other top junior middleweights of the division. In the post-fight interview, Castano said he is ready for anyone.

The co-feature was in the lightweight division. Javier Fortuna (34-2-1, 24 KO’s) of the Dominican Republic, was also impressive last night. He blasted out Jesus Andres Cuellar (29-3, 22 KO’s) of Argentina in two rounds in a slug fest. In the opening round, Cuellar wasted no time and charged at Fortuna. Both southpaw fighters exchanged punches and went toe to toe. Towards the end of the round, Fortuna with his back against the ropes, landed a right hook that sent Cuellar flying on his back. Cuellar got up and was seriously hurt but was able to finish the round. In round two, Cuellar who only knows how to come forward, tried to bully Fortuna again. Fortuna was quicker and beat Cuellar to the punch. Once again with Fortuna against the ropes, he landed a straight left hand followed by a right hook to drop Cuellar again. Cuellar did get up but he was in really bad shape. Fortuna went for the finish landing power shots which prompted the referee to stop the fight. Fortuna scored the TKO at 2:01 of the second round. With the victory, Fortuna remains a force in the lightweight division. For Cuellar, it might be best to try to go back down in weight as he has been unsuccessful in the lightweight divisions.

In a bout before the co-feature, we got to see undefeated David Morrell Jr. (1-0, 1 KO) of Cuba, face off with Quinton Rankin (15-6-2, 12 KO’s) of Charlotte, NC. The fight was in the light heavyweight division scheduled for eight rounds. This was a big test for the Cuban standout but he made the fight look easy. The 21 year old Morrell started off fast. In round one, Morrell landed a nice right hand to the body that dropped Rankin. Rankin got up and Morrell went back to work. In round two, Morrell landed a straight left hand that wobbled Rankin. Morell then came underneath with crushing left uppercut that dropped Rankin again. The referee immediately stopped the fight. Morrell scored his second knockout at 1:01 of the 2nd round. Morell is starting off fast in his professional career as he was an outstanding amateur fighter. We will continue to see his progress in upcoming fights.

In the opening bout of the PBC telecast, Ryan “Cowboy” Karl (17-2, 11 KO’s) of Milano, TX, faced off with Bergman Aguilar (15-5-1, 5 KO’s) of Costa Rica. The fight was scheduled for ten rounds in the welterweight division. In round one, Aguilar came after Karl and both fighters started trading punches. As Karl was backing up Aguilar, Aguilar caught Karl with right hand and dropped him. Karl got up and the fighters started to trade punches. In round two, Karl had a better round. He backed up Aguilar for most of the round hammering Aguilar to the body. You can tell the body shots were wearing out Aguilar. In round three, Karl dropped Aguilar with a low blow. As the action continued, Karl stayed busy working the body of Aguilar. Karl continued his attack in round four. At the end of round four, Aguilar looked more tired. Karl remained in control of the fight in round five and continued to back up Aguilar. At the end of round five, Aguilar could not continue the fight due to a broken left hand. It was relieved that perhaps he broke his left hand in the 1st round after landing a hard jab on Karl in the replay. Karl was awarded a TKO victory at 3:00 in round five. This was Karl’s 3rd straight knockout.

Compass crowns inaugural Barista Champion 2019

 Cache
The UK’s largest food services provider and fourth biggest coffee retailer in the UK, Compass Group UK & Ireland has held its inaugural Barista Championships, which saw four finalists from across the Compass portfolio take part in a highly competitive championship final. The competition was designed to mirror the ‘World Barista Championships’ set-up, to prepare Compass baristas to compete nationally. Razvan Cojocaru, from Restaurant Associates, was crowned winner following two intense rounds, where he demonstrated strong technical ability as well as complex coffee knowledge in his skill, with strong professionalism throughout. Razvan used a coffee from Costa Rica Cordillera Del Fuego which was processed using an anaerobic fermentation method and roasted by the team at Roastworks coffee. Razvan explained that the coffee was like “liquid apple pie”. Competitors: Pariwartan Nepal, from Eurest, Thales Pona, from Restaurant Associates, Arthur Luccats, from Compass Ireland and Razvan Cojocaru seized the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. The competition focused on three key areas: Espresso, milk and a signature drink. All baristas were judged against SCA competition guidelines, using their rules, regulations and score sheets. The final took place at Compass’ SCA accredited premier training campus at the company’s Chertsey HQ, complete with an esteemed panel of judges flown in from Italy and Switzerland as well as the UK. The judging panel consisted of Robert Ward, Cimbali – Technical Judge, Lauro Fioretti, Simonelli Group and Andre Eiermann, UCC – Sensory Judges. Having competed and judged at UK and World Championships themselves, the panel of judges were best placed to survey and assess Compass’s baristas skills. In addition, Compass Coffee Education and Training Manager, Sonali Tailor oversaw the judging team as head judge. The winner received a trip of a lifetime to an Origin’s coffee farm in Costa Rica. Razvan will get to see first-hand where the humble coffee bean starts its journey, as well as the social community projects at origin. Steve Lovegrove, Head of Business Excellence, Compass Group UK & Ireland, said, “The standard and quality of the baristas competing has been exceptional, congratulations goes out to each and every one of the competitors who have put so much into this competition. 'It clearly demonstrates the great talent we have in our business and it makes me extremely proud that we can showcase the skills and talents of these individuals.” Owen Thom, Education Business Development Manager, The SCA added, “It was a great honour to be a judge in the heats for Compass Barista Championships. 'Seeing all the talent on show, and the passion of all participants is a credit to the competition and the coffee education that the Barista Academy has in place. I look forward to seeing the journey of the winner and all the candidates.” Razvan Cojocaru, Compass Barista Champion 2019, said, “Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me and this competition. I feel so grateful to have won and cannot wait to fly to Costa Rica. 'This has been such an amazing experience from beginning to end, and I feel so proud to be a part of the Barista Academy, it has given me the confidence and opportunity to take part and I can’t wait for more competitions.” Prior to the inaugural final, baristas from around the Compass business took part in heats where competitors were tasked to present two espressos and two milk beverages of their choice within 7 minutes.

Welcome message

The Vasco da Gama Movement invites you to be part of the first PanEuropean meeting for Trainees and Junior Family Doctors !

We are delighted to welcome you to the first Pan European meeting for trainees and junior Family Doctors, the Vasco da Gama Movement Forum, which will be held in the city of Barcelona on 7th-8th February 2014. After organising 8 succesful European PreConferences and co-organising 2 fantastic World PreConferences ahead of the Wonca Conferences between 2005-2013, and alongside preparations for the 2014 VdGM PreConference in Lisbon in July, the Vasco da Gama Movement is ready to take the next step !

We are organizing the VdGM Forum, a scientific conference rich in contents, under the title “One Strong Voice for the Family Doctors of the 21st Century”. The programme will be focused on the topics of the Future of Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Out-of-Hours Services, Career Development, Research Skills and Emerging Technologies.

Prior to the VdGM Forum, a vocational exchange will be organized for selected participants, who will have the opportunity to observe GP/FM practices (offices) in Barcelona and learn more about the national organisation of primary care.

We strongly believe that the progress of our movement depends on our colleagues, on whether they share our cause, and on the continuity of our platform; a platform in which members meet regularly and they have the chance to establish and develop good professional relationships, which are essential for launching exciting and aspirational new projects. Alongside trainees and newly qualified (5 years) General Practitioners / Family Doctors, we also welcome senior GP/FD, other specialities but also patients and undergraduate medical students.

For this very reason we are working with great enthusiasm so that you can enjoy a unique scientific and cultural programme.

We warmly invite you all to join us for an amazing conference; we are looking forward to meeting you in Barcelona!

(UK)

Lorraine Cleaver is a Scottish wife and mother who has petitioned the Scottish Parliament for improved Thyroid diagnosis and treatment. The petition has benefited from the involvement of the Minister for Public Health and is progressing well. After her thyroid was removed in 2006 for Graves disease, Lorraine's health declined by an alarming degree, despite being under the care of an Endocrinologist. Her GP was desperate to help but the system of deferring to the consultant and guidelines made this almost impossible. She recovered her health by working alongside her GP but outwith the established Endocrinology model. Gathering evidence for the petition reinforced that the treatment model for chronic diseases is failing many thousands of patients who go on to develop worsening health and a reliance on polypharmacy. She is optimistic that putting patients at the center of their treatment will help to change this, improving patient's health and enabling GP's to have more autonomy in the patient's care.

Preconference: #DesignThinking for Primary Care Workshop

Design Thinking is about believing we can make a difference, and having an intentional process in order to get to new, relevant solutions that create positive impact.

  • It’s human-centred: it begins from deep empathy and understanding of needs and motivations of people
  • It’s collaborative: several great minds are always stronger when solving a challenge than just one.
  • It’s optimistic: Design Thinking is the fundamental belief that we all can create change.
  • It’s experimental: it gives you permission to fail and to learn from your mistakes, because you come up with new ideas, get feedback on them, then iterate.

It has five phases that help navigate the development from identifying a design challenge to finding and building a solution.

The Five Phases of the Design Thinking Process

The Vasco da Gama Movement is developing a fantastic workshop that will enable you to learn firsthand how Design Thinking can be used to innovate in health and healthcare. During this workshop, teams will work together to explore and create solutions to real healthcare challenges.

Design Thinking #1

The participants will work on problems identified and will use the Design Thinking methods to gain a deep understanding of the problem and develop innovative ‘human-centred’ solutions (ie. solutions that truly meet the needs of users). Methods will include user-interviews, observation, brainstorming and rapid prototyping, with the aim of creating solutions that combine human desirability and usability with business viability and technological feasibility.

The workshop will take place in Barcelona just before the 1st #VdGMForum, on 7th February from 9am to 2.30pm. There is only a limited number of places for this workshop. The participation in the workshop will be free of charge. Medical students, other healthcare professionals, people from other professional background and patients are welcome to apply for a place.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 7th January.

Preconference: Satellite Meetup with the Health 2.0 Barcelona

Are you a technology enthusiast? Do you believe in the potential of technology that will lead to the Creative Destruction of Medicine? We are delighted to invite you to the Preconference Satellite Meetup with the Health 2.0 Barcelona!

Health2.0Bcn is an interdisciplinary group where professionals of the health sector join technology lovers with the aim to improve healthcare through the use of new technologies. Health2.0 wants to encourage projects related to health, developed by startups or individuals, offering them visibility, while inspiring others

This Preconference Satellite Meetup will be held on Thursday 6th February 2014 at 7pm, just a day before the #VdGMForum. A map to the location is available here. The participation is completely free, but we kindly ask you to register here in order to manage the resources that we need for this meetup.

The Programme includes:

  1. Presentation of the VdGM
  2. Introduction and overview of the latest trends in health2.0 by health2.0Bcn team
  3. Round table of local GPs who will tell us about the use of 2.0 technologies in their day to day, what's available out there and what's missing.

Primary care represents a big market segment with special needs, that are not necessarily covered yet by the new technologies. Let's try to fill that gap.

The confirmed family doctor panelists are:
  • Dra Mireia Sans
  • Dra Dolors Ruiz
  • Dra Adriana Bataller
  • Dr Miguel Angel Mayer
  • Dr Monica Moro
  • Dr Jordi Serrano

We hope that this session will be a good occasion for startups to size the opportunities and needs of the primary care, and for primary care doctors to share their experience and best practices in order to spread the benefits of those technologies amongst their GP colleagues.

We would like to thank the organizers Aline Noizet, Frederic Llordachs, Jordi Serrano Pons and Sophie Park for their enthusiastic support and for making this meeting happen.
