Washington's Quade Green eligible after NCAA grants waiver

 Cache

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington guard Quade Green will be eligible immediately after his waiver was granted by the NCAA.

Green, who started his career at Kentucky, transferred to Washington last January and sat out due to NCAA transfer rules. He was seeking to become eligible for the start of this season rather than missing the first month.

The ruling is a huge boost for the Huskies as Green is expected to be their starting point guard and Washington faces a challenging first month with games against No. 16 Baylor, Tennessee and No. 8 Gonzaga.

Green was a five-star recruit out of high school and averaged 9.3 points in 34 games as a freshman at Kentucky. He played in nine games last season off the bench before deciding to transfer to Washington.

The Huskies open the season next Friday against Baylor in Anchorage, Alaska.

Dear Zhigang: Thank you

In reply to Re: Tractions are fundamental processes of biology

Dear Zhigang:  Thank you for your probing questions.  I will try my best to address them.  I am sure that you will not be completely satisfied,
but that may be the fun of all these.  Ning

Issue 2: Beningo KA, Dembo M, Wang
YL.
Responses
of fibroblasts to anchorage of dorsal extracellular matrix receptors.
Proc Natl Acad Sci USA
101:18024-18029, 2004.

Mierke CT, Rosel D, Fabry B, Brabek J.
Contractile forces in tumor cell migration.
Eur J Cell Biol. 2008 Feb 22; [Epub ahead of print]

Issue 3: No.  It is true that focal adhesions do
transmit large tractions.  However, it does not mean other structures do
not.  A 2001 paper in Nat Cell Biol by Balaban et al quantified tractions
only at focal adhesions.  Our work suggests that other dynamic adhesive
structures may generate large tractions too.

Issue 4: There is some nice discussion on the role of
tractions in cell migration in the paper by Beningo KA, Hamao K, Dembo M, Wang
YL, Hosoya H (2006) Traction forces of fibroblasts are
regulated by the Rho-dependent kinase but not by the myosin light chain
kinase.  Arch Biochem Biophys 456:224-31.  Maybe the
primary function of tractions is not for overcoming viscous drag for cell
migration after all.  It is likely that
tractions are used by cells for deforming structures, sensing the physical
environment, and orienting internal and external structures.  It is likely that other important roles of
tractions are yet to be discovered.

Load Transfer Characteristics of a Cable Bolt in DEPT

 Cache
Cable bolts help surrounding rock masses of underground excavations to form internal rock structure and thus self-stabilize through effective load transfer between rock masses and cable bolts. The load transfer characteristics of cable bolt play the most significant role in cable selection for support design. There are many factors potentially affecting the load transfer characteristics of cable bolt via strengthening or weakening load contributors such as cable bonding, mechanical interlocking, frictional resistance at cable-grout interface and grout-rock interface, and shearing of grout anchorage. Double embedment pull test (DEPT) is an effective, reliable, and repeatable test method of investigating the load transfer characteristics of cable bolt and thus was selected in this study. With DEPT, the influence of factors such as cable rotation, grout age, grout anchorage annulus thickness, cable wire profile, and failure mode on the load transfer characteristics of cable bolt were investigated in terms of tensile strength and stiffness in different loading stages. Conclusions drawn from the study can be used to improve cable installation quality and to select appropriate cable bolting technique.

Targeted Traction of Impacted Teeth With C-Tube Miniplates

 Cache
imageAbstract Orthodontic traction of impacted teeth has typically been performed using full fixed appliance as anchorage against the traction force. This conventional approach can be difficult to apply in the mixed dentition if the partial fixed appliance offers an insufficient anchor unit. In addition, full fixed appliance can induce unwanted movement of adjacent teeth. This clinical report presents 3 cases where impacted teeth were recovered in the mixed or transitional dentition with skeletal anchorage on the opposite arch without full fixed appliance. Instead, intermaxillary traction was used to bring the impacted teeth into position. With this approach, side effects on teeth and periodontal tissues adjacent to the impaction were minimized.

Event Update For 2019-11-05

 Cache

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Quote: "Broadmoor Middle Laboratory School will be closed as a precaution Wednesday as authorities search for the cause of a mystery medical emergency that sent at least 13 students to hospitals. Medical emergency sends 13 or more students to hospital; authorities evacuate school What initially was reported as a possible natural gas leak spurred a large emergency response Tuesday afternoon and caused officials to evacuate the campus on Atlantic Avenue. At least 13 students have since been taken to area hospitals. Two students came out of a class feeling dizzy and complained of headaches, Caddo School District spokeswoman Mary Nash-Wood told KSLA News 12. Eleven more other students and three school staffers had similar symptoms, she added."

Quote: "Shreveport firefighters and CenterPoint Energy crews checked the campus for a gas leak and found none."

Note: So it smelled LIKE the odorant added to natural gas but it wasn't natural gas. That's what hydrogen sulfide smells like, all of those symptoms match those of low-level hydrogen sulfide poisoning, and they didn't find any natural gas. People will often mistake the smell of low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide for a gas leak, since the smell is the same, but hydrogen sulfide will not register on natural gas detectors...

Quote: "The climate crisis has arrived and is accelerating faster than most scientists expected (figure 2, IPCC 2018). It is more severe than anticipated, threatening natural ecosystems and the fate of humanity (IPCC 2019). Especially worrisome are potential irreversible climate tipping points and nature's reinforcing feedbacks (atmospheric, marine, and terrestrial) that could lead to a catastrophic “hothouse Earth,” well beyond the control of humans (Steffen et al. 2018). These climate chain reactions could cause significant disruptions to ecosystems, society, and economies, potentially making large areas of Earth uninhabitable."

Eagle River Spartan athlete fulfills promise to late brother by competing at World Championships

Jen Hufford hadn’t slept for two days after an exhausting flight from Anchorage to London to Scandinavia, but as she settled into her hotel in Are, Sweden, earlier this week, her excitement still bubbled over. On Friday, the 35-year-old Eagle River sports trainer and athlete with an impressive competitive resume will toe the line with an elite group of competitors from around the world vying for the title of World Spartan Ultra champion. Considered the granddaddy of Spartan Races, the Ultra challenges competitors to complete as many laps of a five-mile course filled with 30 to 35 obstacles as possible in a 24-hour period. For every failed obstacle, the racer must complete 30 burpees, to be completed at the end of each round. The racer with the most accumulated miles wins.

“The race venue is looking to have a high in the 20s (Fahrenheit) and a low near 10 with snow, as well as only about six hours of current daylight in a 24-hour period,” Hufford said of the expected weather conditions high in the mountains of northeast Sweden. “The entire race will be performed under headlamps.”

In other words, it’s a brutal race that tests not only physical strength, but mental fortitude. That’s a skill Hufford appears to cultivate every day. Spurred by the toughness of her late brother Mark — who was paralyzed in 1995 after falling from a treestand, yet went on to become a decorated hand cyclist — she reminds herself every day how lucky she is to have her health. She said Mark is her motivation to race.

“Shortly before he passed in 2011, we had made a promise to each other that we were going to make it at a ‘world level’ in our sports (his wish for himself was the Kona Iron Man),” Hufford said of her brother, who died before attaining that goal. “With his passing, it led me on the hunt to keep that promise to him. We trained a lot together in the gym, and athletics was what I would consider our brother-sister bond.”

Hufford has been an athlete all her life. Growing up in Eagle River, she began figure skating at the age of 2 and by 24 had competed at multiple levels.

“After my competition days were over in skating, I went more into coaching, and I was looking for that next ‘it’ factor,” she said.

She adventured into bodybuilding, but didn’t think it would suit her long term, and she tried running, but that didn’t suit her, either.

“I ran multiple marathons, untrained, just to see if I could conquer the distance but realized running on pavement, for lack of a better term, sucks.”

A few years ago she landed on Spartan racing. The obstacle-course format has been growing in popularity worldwide as athletes embrace the whole-body fitness demanded of the sport. Spartan competitors run, climb, carry, crawl and burpee their way through courses littered with obstacles. There are giant wooden walls to climb, barbed-wire fields to negotiate, sand-filled bags to haul up hills — even fire pits to run through or over. Each obstacle requires a specific skill, and if a competitor fails at the challenge, he or she must perform burpees to make up for the loss. This cruel jumping-and-pushup combo exercise is a time-consuming, energy-sapping task, and Spartan athletes try to avoid them at all costs.

Tom Deakins is transitioning from ultra sports to bodybuilding. Like Hufford, he thrives by challenging himself physically and mentally, so he sought her opinion as he went from a mostly aerobic training schedule to one that involves plenty of time in the gym. She is coaching him in nutrition and fitness, and he said he is seeing the results.

“People like Jen, they pick a goal and they conquer it,” he said. “She’s raising money to help athletes like her brother, athletes with mobility issues. And that’s where the mental toughness comes in. Jen is using her brother to mentally push through one of the toughest races ever.”

This summer, Deakins said, Hufford prepped for her Hawaii Spartan race by entering the

Mayor’s Marathon, but with a twist.

“Every mile, she dropped and did 100 burpees,” he said. “She would just incorporate these into the regular race, stopping every mile to perform burpees.

“… she is a crazy athlete who I have a crazy respect for.”

Kim Randolph said it’s Hufford’s can-do attitude that will get her to the finish line in Sweden. After all, it’s what helped her complete her first-ever 26.2-miler, the Berlin Marathon, in September.

“Jen was my trainer when I was training for the marathon,” Randolph said. “She’s infectious — she has so much positivity in her, and she said ‘at Mile 20, you’ll want to quit, but just put one foot in front of the other.’ I thought of that so much during the race. And I did it.”

As Spartan Ultra race day approaches, Hufford said she’s ready; and her strategy is similar to what she told Randolph: “Just keep going.”

“At this point my training is done, the time has been put in, and I need to trust the process,” she said. “Mileage will be what mileage will be, but tenacity and heart is what makes a true champion. I preach this everyday to my clients — to never give up and to keep pushing through. I want to show them that I practice what I preach and no matter the obstacle, you can overcome it. My brother would have never quit, and his heart will be with me the entire race.”

Familiar candidates begin 2020 Anchorage Assembly campaigns

 Cache
Tuesday, November 5, 2019 - 15:07

Two familiar names have signaled their intent to run for a Chugiak-Eagle River seat on the Anchorage Assembly in the April 7, 2020, municipal election.

As of Monday, Eagle River’s Jamie Allard and Chugiak’s Gretchen Wehmhoff were the only District 2 residents to file letters of intent with the Alaska Division of Elections. The filing period for municipal office is Jan. 1-Feb. 1, but the letters permit candidates to raise funds prior to officially filing for office.

Allard is a U.S. Army veteran who currently serves as a commissioner on the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights. She also served as Gov. Dunleavy’s Special Assistant/Legislative Liaison for the Commissioner of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. In 2018, she ran for the Alaska State House in District 14 but was defeated in the Republican primary by eventual winner Kelly Merrick.

On her website, Allard lists “out-of-control” crime, a desire for smaller government and the need to restructure the municipal government as her top priorities.

Wehmhoff is an educator who in January was appointed to serve out the assembly term of Amy Demboski after Demboski resigned to take a job in the Dunleavy administration. In April, Crystal Kennedy was elected to a full three-year term on the assembly. Wehmhoff has previously run unsuccessfully for both the assembly and the Alaska State House.

On her website, Wehmhoff says her priorities will be to “bring equity and balance to the public safety, transportation and educational needs in the district.”

District 2 (Chugiak-Eagle River) has two seats on the 11-member assembly. Both Allard and Wehmhoff will be vying for the seat currently held by Fred Dyson, whose term expires in April. Dyson said Monday that he doesn’t plan to run for reelection, but said he does have some projects on the assembly he’d like to see through to fruition and didn’t entirely close the door on filing for another term.

However, Dyson said his 2017 run came about only after he was approached to run at the last minute by Demboski and former assemblyman Bill Starr.

“I certainly would never do again what I did the last time, which was file at the last minute,” he said.

NEXT LEVEL: Snell scores first college TD, McDonald lights the lamp for No. 8 Friars, Krajnik signs with UAA and Jennings makes a splash in Boise

Montana State University redshirt freshman tight end Derryk Snell had his best game as a college football player Saturday when he caught three passes for 42 yards and his first career touchdown in the Bobcats’ 42-7 win over Southern Utah in Bozeman, Montana.

The 2017 Alaska Gatorade Football Player of the Year has caught six passes this season and drew praise from Bobcats coach Jeff Choate in postgame interviews.

“He’s got really good ball skills,” Choate said of the 6-foot-2, 245-pounder, who graduated from Chugiak High in 2018. “He’s a talented young man.”

With the win, Montana State improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The Bobcats entered the game ranked No. 15 in the most recent NCAA Division I Football Conference Subdivision (FCS) Coaches Poll. Montana State plays at Northern Colorado on Saturday.

McDonald scores in back-to-back games for No. 8 Friars

Everywhere he goes Cam McDonald scores goals.

The Providence College and former Eagle River High defenseman scored his first collegiate goal in the team’s 4-2 win over Clarkson on Oct. 19. McDonald wasted no time getting his second tally, picking up another goal in the team’s Oct. 25 win over Boston College. Through Oct. 27, Providence was ranked No. 8 in the U.S. College Hockey Online Division I poll.

McDonald played junior hockey for the Kenai River Brown Bears and Muskegon Lumberjacks before signing with the Friars.

Krajnik to skate for Seawolves

After spending nearly three years on the Kenai Peninsula, Zach Krajnik is coming home.

The 2017 Chugiak High grad and current Kenai River Brown Bears forward announced his commitment with Division I Alaska-Anchorage for the 2020-21 season.

Krajnik is in his third season with Kenai River of the North American Hockey League, where last season he scored 17 goals in 59 games. In 16 games this season, Krajnik has six goals and 13 assists; as of Sunday he ranked 12th in the league in scoring.

Jennings making a splash in Boise

Boise State senior swimmer Emmie Jennings continues to make a splash in Idaho, where the two-time All-Mountain West conference performer has been racking up more victories for the Division I Broncos.

The 2016 Chugiak High grad won the 100 freestyle in a meet against Idaho last month and helped her team win the 200 yard freestyle relay in a meet against Idaho to bring her NCAA career win total to 19.

On Saturday, Jennings helped the BSU 200 medley relay team to a second-place finish during a dual meet against Nevada.

Southbound Glenn Highway on-ramp now open at North Eagle River exit

  • Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility employees work to repair a broken water line at the southbound on-ramp at the North Eagle River exit on the Glenn Highway on Monday, Nov. 4. (Matt Tunseth / Chugiak-Eagle River Star)

UPDATE (Nov. 6, 2019) — A broken water line that caused a Glenn Highway onramp to be closed for more than a day has been repaired.

The Municipality of Anchorage issued an alert early Wednesday morning saying the southbound North Eagle River ramp had been reopened.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Municipal crews are working to fix a broken water line that has forced the temporary closure of the southbound Glenn Highway on-ramp at the North Eagle River exit.

The incident was first reported at around 10:45 a.m. Monday, when the Anchorage Police Department said in an online alert that a traffic accident caused a water main break. No timeline has been given for the on-ramp to reopen.

Southbound drivers hoping to leave Eagle River via the Glenn Highway are being detoured around the on-ramp to either the South Birchwood or Eagle River exits. The North Eagle River exit’s northbound highway on-ramp — as well as the northbound and southbound off-ramps from the Glenn leading into Eagle River — are unaffected by the closure.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.

Police seek vandalism suspect after rock-throwing brouhaha

  • Walter Ingram (APD photo)

Police are looking for an Eagle River man involved in a vandalism case that led to a melee involving police and the man’s ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend.

According to the Anchorage Police Department, the Oct. 30 incident on Centerfield Drive began when Walter R. Ingram III, 47, allegedly threw a rock at the windshield of a vehicle owned by his former girlfriend. Police said the woman’s current boyfriend, Justin M. Godwin, 24, witnessed the vandalism and confronted Ingram, who ran off.

While interviewing Godwin about the vandalism, police discovered he was wanted on a felony warrant and would have to go to jail. Instead of going peacefully, police wrote that Godwin tried to run back in the house, slamming the front door “into the officer’s body.”

“The officer pursued Godwin to the top of the stairs, inside the home, where the offiecr was able to grab hold of Godwin,” wrote police spokeswoman Renee Oistad.

A second officer was able to help corral Godwin, who police said “continued to kick and try to pull away” as be was being taken from the home. Godwin was taken to jail on the outstanding warrant and for resisting arrest.

As for Ingram, police said that as of Monday his wherabouts were unknown. He’s described as a 6-foot-4, 250 pounds with graying brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone who knows his location is asked to call police at 311.

Voila! French students get lessons in culture, community at Chugiak camp

Participants at a French language camp near Beach Lake in Chugiak may soon be in danger of getting deja vu.

“We’ve got one student who has been at every camp so far,” said Nicole Ayers, a foreign language teacher at Chugiak High who started the third-annual camp in 2017 as a way to build a bit of esprit de corps among high school French programs within the Anchorage School District.

Ayers said she modeled the two-day camp at the Birchwood Camp after a successful program the district’s German teachers began three decades ago.

“We took inspiration from them,” she said.

The first year, about 30 students attended the camp. Last year there were more than 50, with this year’s camp attracting almost 80 students from seven of the district’s eight public high schools.

“It’s just exciting to see it grow,” Ayers said.

The camp is semi-immersive in nature, with teachers speaking French as much as possible. But it’s open to all students regardless of proficiency, Ayers said, and the main focus is on learning about the varied and diverse cultures of the French-speaking world.

“There are far more French speakers outside of France than inside,” she said.

Ayers said students ate waffles from Belgium, crafted bracelets from Martinique and participated in a traditional tea ceremony from Morocco. With French spoken as an official language in nearly 30 countries from Canada to Cameroon, she said it’s important to show students just how useful the language can be.

“I think it helps with getting them excited,” she said. “And it gives them the opportunity to use the language outside of the classroom.”

Ayers said about 15 students from Chugiak and a dozen from Eagle River High participated. One added benefit of the program, she said, is it not only gives French students a chance to connect with cultures globally but also their French-speaking peers at other high schools in the district.

“It’s community building.”

Outrage Over Qatar Airways’ 24 Mile Cargo Flight

 Cache

Cargo airlines operate some very interesting routes. For example, my home in Miami has a great view of the arrivals path for Miami International Airport, and nothing gets me quite as excited as seeing the Cathay Pacific Cargo 747-8 landing from Anchorage. That's not a route or plane most people would expect to see!

There's currently controversy surrounding a Qatar Airways Cargo flight, which might also just be the world's shortest scheduled flight operated by a wide body cargo aircraft.

One of Qatar Airways' regular 777-200LR cargo routes (QR8173) is from Doha to Liege (in Belgium) to Mexico City. Liege is a cargo hub, so the route isn't too surprising, as I imagine they transport significant goods to both Belgium and Mexico with this route.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches accepted as payment for parking citations

 Cache

If you have any unpaid parking fines at the University of Alaska Anchorage campus, and you have a loaf of bread and some peanut butter and jelly, you can now reduce or cover the cost of your tickets by making a PB&J sandwich.

Anchorage local NBC news affiliate KTUU-TV reports the university will take donations for their annual payment bartering tradition until November 8, to help combat student hunger.

From KTUU-TV, ktuu.com:

The food goes to the university's emergency food cache, which provides food to students who face hunger on a regular basis. The drive typically runs for two weeks. This year, through a partnership with the on-campus dining facilities, week two will focus on collecting canned soup for the emergency cache program.

Parking fees can be offset by different amounts depending on the size of any donation, but there is a limit to how far you can spread that peanut butter. Parking services capped the number of PB&J payments at two citations per individual. Two 16 oz. jars will be good for a $10 credit, three jars will cover a $35 citation, and five jars will cover a $60 ticket. Tickets must have been issued within the past 45 days, or be within the 60-day "late status" window.

According to the UAA Parking Service's webpage: "Any nut butter-almond, cashew, peanut butter- or any flavor jam, jelly, marmalade, preserves, etc. will be accepted. All donations must be commercially produced (no home canning), unopened and not expired."

This week only: UAA Parking Services will take PB&J as payment for citations [ktuu.com]
