InfoQ:请从专业性和权威性,参与标准和参与流程上,介绍一下TPC-C的测试结果,对于数据库厂商来说意味着什么?

TPC是由数十家会员公司创建的非盈利组织,成立于1988年,总部设在美国,图灵奖得主Jim Gray是奠基人。TPC的成员主要是业界主流的计算机软硬件厂家,其职责是制定企业级应用基准测试考评的标准规范,并且衡量整体系统的性能和性价比,管理测试结果的认证和发布。Oracle、IBM、微软等公司的多个数据库产品曾多次参与这个测评并且是主要领先成绩的保持者。TPC-C是TPC组织制定的关于OLTP数据库事务处理能力的基准测试,金融、电信、政府等关键领域的客户一般参照TPC-C结果来衡量各个数据库厂商的事务处理能力。

只有在TPC官方网站上得到认证,得到国际机构审计的测试结果才是TPC机构认可的测试结果。TPC-C认证要求非常严格,大到性能、功能、数据一致性和容灾能力,小到测试过程中使用过的鼠标键盘价格,都需要严格披露,确保测试可复现且与真实业务场景保持一致。OceanBase TPC-C仅仅认证过程就花费超过半年时间。

There has been a lot of “buzz” around Ruby on Rails for a while now.  I have been following it since it hit the street.  I have to admit I have not done much with Rails except for reading and dreaming about it, but I hope to work with it someday.  However, in the back of my mind, I always wondered if I could build a real world application using this framework.  Now a day, everyone is building so called “Enterprise” (What is enterprise anyways?) applications.  If I use Rails, can I say my application is enterprise ready?

I came across Jay Field’s post on Rails: Enterprise Ready.  One of the points he made in his post is that RoR right out of the box might not solve your problem (I do not think any framework can), but it can be easily extended.  Being easily extended is the key to any useful and sucessful framework.

Besides all the enterprise worthyness stuff, I also found Jay’s approach to unit testing interesting.  On top of the MVC layer, he inserted a Presenter abstraction in between the view and the controller.  The Presenter will be responsible for maintaining data for the view to consume.  Normally the controller would be responisble for this which might make testing a little bit messy.  Since the presenter maintains the data, it can be tested independently.  Of course the draw back is having to create and maintain a separate class.

He also mentioned all his unit tests run in less than a second.  Assuming he has more than a couple hundred tests, that number is amazingly fast!  One of the reasons he is able to achieve those numbers is because none of his tests actually hit the database.  This reminds me, our unit tests are running way too slow right now mostly because a lot of tests hit the database (especially when we run it on Oracle, it is killing me).  I am going to take off my RoR hat and try to see if I can make our tests faster :-)

Angel Bat Dawid - The Oracle (International Anthem, 2019) ****

Independent record company International Anthem has become an incubator for philosophical, political, and visionary creative artists like Ben LaMar Gay, Makaya McCraven, Jaimie Branch, and the Irreversible Entanglements collective of Keir Neuringer, Moor Mother, Luke Stewart, Aquiles Navarro and Tcheser Holmes. Each has approached universalism from a different perspective and tuned their thrilling music to an often biting frequency. Add to that list Angel Bat Dawid. As a fairly recent convert from 9–5 clock-puncher to full-time artist (as detailed in a fantastic Chicago Reader feature by Leor Gali l ), it hasn’t taken long for her reputation to grow: In addition to her own groups, Dawid has performed with LaMar Gay, Branch, Matthew Lux, and Roscoe Mitchell. For her debut, The Oracle, she took a Mitchell-esque approach towards performance that stretches beyond a simple solo album and presents a holistic concept of Dawid as a singular artist.

On “What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black? (Dr. Margaret Burroughs),” Dawid sings lines from Burroughs’s essential 1963 poem, "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black? Recording at Radcliffe Hunter mansion and in London and Cape Town, Dawid’s songs communicate musical ideas, as well as states of time and place. Both “Capetown” and “London” catch her in improvisatory contexts, capturing the state of a mind in transit. On “Capetown,” Dawid is joined by drummer Asher Simiso Gamedze, and their duet is lengthy and relaxed. The shining center of the album, “We Are Starzz,” is an incredible melange of voice and clarinet, expertly intertwined and luminescent. We consider the problem of securely generating useful instances of two-party correlations, such as many independent copies of a random oblivious transfer (OT) correlation, using a small amount of communication. This problem is motivated by the goal of secure computation with silent preprocessing, where a low-communication input-independent setup, followed by local ("silent") computation, enables a lightweight "non-cryptographic" online phase once the inputs are known.

Recent works of Boyle et al. (CCS 2018, Crypto 2019) achieve this goal with good concrete efficiency for useful kinds of two-party correlations, including OT correlations, under different variants of the Learning Parity with Noise (LPN) assumption, and using a small number of "base" oblivious transfers. The protocols of Boyle et al. have several limitations. First, they require a large number of communication rounds. Second, they are only secure against semi-honest parties. Finally, their concrete efficiency estimates are not backed by an actual implementation. In this work we address these limitations, making three main contributions:

- Eliminating interaction. Under the same assumption, we obtain the first concretely efficient 2-round protocols for generating useful correlations, including OT correlations, in the semi-honest security model. This implies the first efficient 2-round OT extension protocol of any kind and, more generally, protocols for non-interactive secure computation (NISC) that are concretely efficient and have the silent preprocessing feature.

- Malicious security. We provide security against malicious parties (in the random oracle model) without additional interaction and with only a modest concrete overhead; prior to our work, no similar protocols were known with any number of rounds.

- Implementation. Finally, we implemented, optimized, and benchmarked our 2-round OT extension protocol, demonstrating that it offers a more attractive alternative to the OT extension protocol of Ishai et al. (Crypto 2003) in many realistic settings.

We present a high-assurance and high-speed implementation of the SHA-3 hash function. Our implementation is written in the Jasmin programming language, and is formally verified for functional correctness, provable security and timing attack resistance in the EasyCrypt proof assistant. Our implementation is the first to achieve simultaneously the four desirable properties (efficiency, correctness, provable security, and side-channel protection) for a non-trivial cryptographic primitive. Concretely, our mechanized proofs show that: 1) the SHA-3 hash function is indifferentiable from a random oracle, and thus is resistant against collision, first and second preimage attacks; 2) the SHA-3 hash function is correctly implemented by a vectorized x86 implementation. Furthermore, the implementation is provably protected against timing attacks in an idealized model of timing leaks. The proofs include new EasyCrypt libraries of independent interest for programmable random oracles and modular indifferentiability proofs.

Bitcoin and its underlying blockchain protocol have received recently significant attention in the context of building distributed systems as well as from the perspective of the foundations of the consensus problem. At the same time, the rapid development of quantum technologies brings the possibility of quantum computing devices from a theoretical concept to an emerging technology. Motivated by this, in this work we revisit the formal security of the core of the Bitcoin protocol, called the Bitcoin backbone, under the assumption that the adversary has access to a scalable quantum computer. We prove that the protocol's essential properties stand in the post-quantum setting assuming a suitably bounded Quantum adversary in the Quantum Random Oracle (QRO) model. Specifically, our results imply that security can be shown by bounding the quantum queries so that each quantum query is worth $O(p^{-1/2})$ classical ones and that the wait time for safe settlement is expanded by a multiplicative factor of $O(p^{-1/6})$, where $p$ is the probability of success of a single classical query to the protocol's underlying hash function.

Grover's search algorithm gives a quantum attack against block ciphers by searching for a key that matches a small number of plaintext-ciphertext pairs. This attack uses $O(\sqrt{N})$ calls to the cipher to search a key space of size $N$. Previous work in the specific case of AES derived the full gate cost by analyzing quantum circuits for the cipher, but focused on minimizing the number of qubits.

In contrast, we study the cost of quantum key search attacks under a depth restriction and introduce techniques that reduce the oracle depth, even if it requires more qubits. As cases in point, we design quantum circuits for the block ciphers AES and LowMC. Our circuits give a lower overall attack cost in both the gate count and depth-times-width cost models. In NIST's post-quantum cryptography standardization process, security categories are defined based on the concrete cost of quantum key search against AES. We present new, lower cost estimates for each category, so our work has immediate implications for the security assessment of post-quantum cryptography.

As part of this work, we release Q# implementations of the full Grover oracle for AES-128, -192, -256 and for the three LowMC instantiations used in Picnic, including unit tests and code to reproduce our quantum resource estimates. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first two such full implementations and automatic resource estimations.

The Camenisch-Lysyanskaya rerandomizable signature (CL-RRS) scheme is an important tool in the construction of privacy preserving protocols. One of the limitations of CL-RRS is that the signature size is linear in the number of messages to be signed. In 2016, Pointcheval-Sanders introduced a variant of rerandomizable signature (PS-RRS) scheme which removes the above limitation. However, the security of PS-RRS scheme was proved under an interactive assumption. In 2018, Pointcheval-Sanders improved this to give a reduction under a parameterized assumption.

In 2012, Gerbush et al.\ introduced the dual-form signature technique to remove the dependency on interactive/parameterized assumption. They applied this technique on the CL-RRS scheme (for single message) and proved its unforgeability under static assumptions instead of the interactive assumption used in the original work but in the symmetric composite-order pairing setting.

In this work, we realize a fully rerandomizable signature scheme in the prime order setting without random oracle based on the SXDH assumption. The signature structure is derived from Ghadafi's structure-preserving signature. We first apply the dual-form signature technique to obtain a composite-order variant, called \texttt{RRSc}. A signature in \texttt{RRSc} consists of only two group elements and is thus independent of the message block length. The security of the proposed scheme is based on subgroup hiding assumptions. Then we use the dual pairing vector space framework to obtain a prime-order variant called \texttt{RRS} and prove its security under the SXDH assumption.

ePrint Report: Lattice Reduction for Modules, or How to Reduce ModuleSVP to ModuleSVP

We show how to generalize lattice reduction algorithms to module lattices in order to reduce $\gamma$-approximate ModuleSVP over module lattices with rank $k \geq2$ to $\gamma'$-approximate ModuleSVP over module lattices with rank $2 \leq \beta \leq k$. To do so, we modify the celebrated slide-reduction algorithm of Gama and Nguyen to work with module filtrations, a higher-dimensional analogue of the ($\mathbb{Z}$-)basis of a lattice. The particular value of $\gamma$ that we achieve depends on the underlying number field $K$, the ring $R \subset K$, and the embedding (as well as, of course, $k$ and $\beta$). However, for reasonable choices of these parameters, the approximation factor that we achieve is surprisingly close to the one achieved by ``plain'' lattice reduction algorithms, which require an arbitrary SVP oracle in the same dimension. In other words, we show that ModuleSVP oracles are nearly as useful as SVP oracles for solving approximate ModuleSVP in higher dimensions. Our result generalizes the recent independent result of Lee, Pellet-Mary, Stehl\'e, and Wallet, which works in the important special case when $\beta = 2$ and $R = \mathcal{O}_K$ is the ring of integers of $K$ under the canonical embedding. Indeed, at a high level our reduction can be thought of as a generalization of theirs in roughly the same way that slide reduction generalizes LLL reduction.

Blaze, Bleumer and Strauss introduced the notion of proxy re-encryption (PRE), which enables a semi-trusted proxy to transform ciphertexts under Alice's public key into ciphertexts under Bob's public key. The important property to note here is, the proxy should not learn anything about the plaintext encrypted. In 2009, Weng et al. introduced the concept of conditional proxy re-encryption (CPRE), which permits the proxy to re-encrypt only ciphertexts satisfying a condition specified by Alice into a ciphertext for Bob. CPRE enables fine-grained delegation of decryption rights useful in many practical scenarios, such as blockchain-enabled distributed cloud storage and encrypted email forwarding. Several CPRE schemes exist in the literature based on costly bilinear pairing operation in the random oracle model. We propose the first construction of an efficient CPRE scheme without pairing, satisfying chosen ciphertext security under the computational Diffie Hellman (CDH) assumption and its variant in the random oracle model.

Distributed hash tables (DHT) are a fundamental building block in the design of distributed systems with applications ranging from content distribution networks to off-chain storage networks for blockchains and smart contracts. When DHTs are used to store sensitive information, system designers use end-to-end encryption in order to guarantee the confidentiality of their data. A prominent example is Ethereum's off-chain network Swarm.

In this work, we initiate the study of end-to-end encryption in DHTs and the many systems they support. We introduce the notion of an encrypted DHT and provide simulation-based security definitions that capture the security properties one would desire from such a system. Using our definitions, we then analyze the security of a standard approach to storing encrypted data in DHTs. Interestingly, we show that this "standard scheme" leaks information probabilistically, where the probability is a function of how well the underlying DHT load balances its data. We also show that, in order to be securely used with the standard scheme, a DHT needs to satisfy a form of equivocation with respect to its overlay. To show that these properties are indeed achievable in practice, we study the balancing properties of the Chord DHT---arguably the most influential DHT---and show that it is equivocable with respect to its overlay in the random oracle model. Finally, we consider the problem of encrypted DHTs in the context of transient networks, where nodes are allowed to leave and join.

COMSOL won't start on fresh Windows 10 installation

The below post is related to an archived discussion


I have tried to install both COMSOL 5.4 and 5.3a on my newly setup windows 10 machine, but neither of the two runs. I have tried to re-run the installer, delete the configuration directories in C:\Users\<username>.comsol and also installed Java (which as far as I understand should not be necessary as the COMSOL installer should take care of it.

What can I do?

Nowadays I have been working on an interesting customer project where I had to migrate windows oracle standard databases to ODA. The ODAs are X7-2M Models, running version 18.5. This version is coming with Red Hat Enterprise Linx 6.10 (Santiago). Both windows databases and target ODA databases are running PSU 11.2.0.4.190115. But this would definitively also be working for oracle 12c and oracle 18c databases. The databases are licensed with Standard Edition, so migrating through data guard was not possible.

Latest Tech Trends, Their Problems, And How to Solve Them

Few IT professionals are unaware of the rapid emergence of 5G, Internet of Things or IoT, edge-fog-cloud or core computing, microservices, and artificial intelligence known as machine learning or AI/ML.  These new technologies hold enormous promise for transforming IT and the customer experience with the problems that they solve.  It’s important to realize that like all technologies, they introduce new processes and subsequently new problems.  Most are aware of the promise, but few are aware of the new problems and how to solve them.

5G is a great example.  It delivers 10 to 100 times more throughput than 4G LTE and up to 90% lower latencies.  Users can expect throughput between 1 and 10Gbps with latencies at approximately 1 ms.  This enables large files such as 4K or 8K videos to be downloaded or uploaded in seconds not minutes.  5G will deliver mobile broadband and can potentially make traditional broadband obsolete just as mobile telephony has essentially eliminated the vast majority of landlines. 

5G mobile networking technology makes industrial IoT more scalable, simpler, and much more economically feasible.  Whereas 4G is limited to approximately 400 devices per Km2, 5G increases that number of devices supported per Km2 to approximately 1,000,000 or a 250,000% increase. The performance, latency, and scalability are why 5G is being called transformational.  But there are significant issues introduced by 5G.  A key one is the database application infrastructure.

Analysts frequently cite the non-trivial multi-billion dollar investment required to roll-out 5G.  That investment is primarily focused on the antennas and fiber optic cables to the antennas.  This is because 5G is based on a completely different technology than 4G.  It utilizes millimeter waves instead of microwaves.  Millimeter waves are limited to 300 meters between antennas.  The 4G microwaves can be as far as 16 Km apart.  That is a major difference and therefore demands many more antennas and optical cables to those antennas to make 5G work effectively.  It also means it will take considerable time before rural areas are covered by 5G and even then, it will be a degraded 5G. 

The 5G infrastructure investment not being addressed is the database application infrastructure.  The database is a foundational technology for analytics.  IT Pros simply assume it will be there for their applications and microservices. Everything today is interconnected. The database application infrastructure is generally architected for the volume and performance coming from the network.  That volume and performance is going up by an order of magnitude.  What happens when the database application infrastructure is not upgraded to match?  The actual user performance improves marginally or not at all.  It can in fact degrade as volumes overwhelm the database applications not prepared for them.  Both consumers and business users become frustrated.  5G devices cost approximately 30% more than 4G – mostly because those devices need both a 5G and 4G modem (different non-compatible technologies).  The 5G network costs approximately 25% more than 4G.  It is understandable that anyone would be frustrated when they are spending considerably more and seeing limited improvement, no improvement, or negative improvement.  The database application infrastructure becomes the bottleneck.  When consumers and business users become frustrated, they go somewhere else, another website, another supplier, or another partner.  Business will be lost.

Fortunately, there is still time as the 5G rollout is just starting with momentum building in 2020 with complete implementations not expected until 2022, at the earliest.  However, IT organizations need to start planning their application infrastructure upgrades to match the 5G rollout or may end up suffering the consequences.

IoT is another technology that promises to be transformative.  It pushes intelligence to the edge of the network enabling automation that was previously unthinkable.  Smarter homes, smarter cars, smarter grids, smarter healthcare, smarter fitness, smarter water management, and more.  IoT has the potential to radically increase efficiencies and reduce waste.  Most of the implementations to date have been in consumer homes and offices.  These implementations rely on the WiFi in the building they reside. 

The industrial implementations have been not as successful…yet.  Per Gartner, 65 to 85% of Industrial IoT to date have been stuck in pilot mode with 28% of those for more than 2 years.  There are three key reasons for this.  The first are the limitations of 4G of 400 devices per Km2.  This limitation will be fixed as 5G rolls out.  The second is the same issue as 5G, database application infrastructure not suited for the volume and performance required by industrial IoT.  And the third is latency from the IoT edge devices to the analytics, either in the on-premises data center (core), or cloud.  Speed of light latency is a major limiting factor for real-time analytics and real-time actionable information.  This has led to the very rapid rise of edge-fog-cloud or core computing.

Moving analytic processing out to the edge or fog significantly reduces distance latency between where the data is being collected and where it is being analyzed.  This is crucial for applications such as autonomous vehicles.  The application must make decisions in milliseconds not seconds.  It may have to decide whether a shadow in the road is actually a shadow, a reflection, a person, or a dangerous hazard to be avoided.  The application must make that decision immediately and cannot wait.  By pushing the application closer to the data collection, it can make that decision in the timely manner that’s required.  Smart grids, smart cities, smart water management, smart traffic management, are all examples requiring fog (near the edge) or edge computing analytics.  This solves the problem of distance latency; however, it does not resolve analytical latency.  Edge and fog computing typically lack the resources to provide ultra-fast database analytics.  This has led to the deployment of microservices

Microservices have become very popular over the past 24 months.   They tightly couple a database application with its database that has been extremely streamlined to do only the few things the microservice requires.  The database may be a neutered relational, time series, key value, JSON, XML, object, and more.  The database application and its database are inextricably linked.  The combined microservice is then pushed down to the edge or fog compute device and its storage.  Microservices have no access to any other microservices data or database.  If it needs access to another microservice data element, it’s going to be difficult and manually labor-intensive. Each of the microservices must be reworked to grant that access, or the data must be copied and moved via an extract transfer and load (ETL) process, or the data must be duplicated in ongoing manner.  Each of these options are laborious, albeit manageable, for a handful of microservices.  But what about hundreds or thousands of microservices, which is where it’s headed?  This sprawl becomes unmanageable and ultimately, unsustainable, even with AI/ML.

AI/ML is clearly a hot tech trend today.  It’s showing up everywhere in many applications.  This is because standard CPU processing power is now powerful enough to run AI / machine learning algorithms.  AI/ML is showing up typically in one of two different variations.  The first has a defined specific purpose.  It is utilized by the vendor to automate a manual task requiring some expertise.  An example of this is in enterprise storage.  The AI/ML is tasked with placing data based on performance, latency, and data protection policies and parameters determined by the administrator.  It then matches that to the hardware configuration.  If performance should fall outside of the desired parameters AI/ML looks to correct the situation without human intervention.  It learns from experience and automatically makes changes to accomplish the required performance and latency.   The second AI/ML is a tool kit that enables IT pros to create their own algorithms. 

The 1st is an application of AI/ML.  It obviously cannot be utilized outside the tasks it was designed to do. The 2nd is a series of tools that require considerable knowledge, skill, and expertise to be able to utilize.  It is not an application.  It merely enables applications to be developed that take advantage of the AI/ML engine.  This requires a very steep learning curve.

Oracle is the first vendor to solve each and every one of these tech trend problems. The Oracle Exadata X8M and Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) X8 are uniquely suited to solve the 5G and IoT application database infrastructure problem, the edge-fog-core microservices problem, and the AI/ML usability problem. 

It starts with the co-engineering.  The compute, memory, storage, interconnect, networking, operating system, hypervisor, middleware, and the Oracle 19c Database are all co-engineered together.  Few vendors have complete engineering teams for every layer of the software and hardware stacks to do the same thing.  And those who do, have shown zero inclination to take on the intensive co-engineering required.  Oracle Exadata alone has 60 exclusive database features not found in any other database system including others running the same Oracle Database. Take for example Automatic Indexing.  It occurs multiple orders of magnitude faster than the most skilled database administrator (DBA) and delivers noticeably superior performance.  Another example is data ingest.  Extensive parallelism is built-into every Exadata providing unmatched data ingest.  And keep in mind, the Oracle Autonomous Database is utilizing the exact same Exadata Database Machine.  The results of that co-engineering deliver unprecedented Database application latency reduction, response time reduction, and performance increases.  This enables the application Database infrastructure to match and be prepared for the volume and performance of 5G and IoT.

The ODA X8 is ideal for edge or fog computing coming in at approximately 36% lower total cost of ownership (TCO) over 3 years than commodity white box servers running databases.  It’s designed to be a plug and play Oracle Database turnkey appliance.  It runs the Database application too.  Nothing is simpler and no white box server can match its performance.

The Oracle Exadata X8M is even better for the core or fog computing where it’s performance, scalability, availability and capability are simply unmatched by any other database system.  It too is architected to be exceedingly simple to implement, operate, and manage. 

The combination of the two working in conjunction in the edge-fog-core makes the application database latency problems go away.  They even solve the microservices problems.  Each Oracle Exadata X8M and ODA X8 provide pluggable databases (PDBs).  Each PDB is its own unique database working off the same stored data in the container database (CDB).  Each PDB can be the same or different type of Oracle Database including OLTP, data warehousing, time series, object, JSON, key value, graphical, spatial, XML, even document database mining.  The PDBs are working on virtual copies of the data.  There is no data duplication.  There are no ETLs.  There is no data movement.  There are no data islands.  There are no runaway database licenses and database hardware sprawl.  Data does not go stale before it can be analyzed.  Any data that needs to be accessed by a particular or multiple PDBs can be easily configured to do so.  Edge-fog-core computing is solved.  If the core needs to be in a public cloud, Oracle solves that problem as well with the Oracle Autonomous Database providing the same capabilities of Exadata and more.

That leaves the AI/ML usability problem.  Oracle solves that one too.  Both Oracle Engineered systems and the Oracle Autonomous Database have AI/ML engineered inside from the onset.  Not just a tool-kit on the side.  Oracle AI/ML comes with pre-built, documented, and production-hardened algorithms in the Oracle Autonomous Database cloud service.  DBAs do not have to be data scientists to develop AI/ML applications.  They can simply utilize the extensive Oracle library of AI/ML algorithms in Classification, Clustering, Time Series, Anomaly Detection, SQL Analytics, Regression, Attribute Importance, Association Rules, Feature Extraction, Text Mining Support, R Packages, Statistical Functions, Predictive Queries, and Exportable ML Models.  It’s as simple as selecting the algorithms to be used and using them.  That’s it.  No algorithms to create, test, document, QA, patch, and more.

Taking advantage of AI/ML is as simple as implementing Oracle Exadata X8M, ODA X8, or the Oracle Autonomous Database.   Oracle solves the AI/ML usability problem.

The latest tech trends of 5G, Industrial IoT, edge-fog-core or cloud computing, microservices, and AI/ML have the potential to truly be transformative for IT organizations of all stripes.  But they bring their own set of problems.  Fortunately, for organizations of all sizes, Oracle solves those problems.

 Over the last several days, we’ve highlighted the stunning breakthrough in “quantum supremacy” announced by Google and NASA. Across other articles, we’ve revealed how quantum computing translates highly complex algorithmic computational problems into simple, linear (or geometric) problems in terms of computational complexity. In practical terms, quantum computers are code breakers, and they can break all known classical encryption, including the encryption used in cryptocurrency, military communications, financial transactions and even private encrypted communications.

As the number of qubits (quantum bits) in quantum computers exceeds the number of bits used in classical encryption, it renders that encryption practically pointless. A 256-qubit quantum computer, in other words, can easily break 256-bit encryption. A 512-bit qubit computer can break 512-bit encryption, and so on.

Those of us who are the leading publishers in independent media have long known that government-funded tech advancements are typically allowed to leak to the public only after several years of additional advances have already been achieved. Stated in practical terms, the rule of thumb is that by the time breakthrough technology gets reported, the government is already a decade beyond that.

Thus, when Google’s scientists declare “quantum supremacy” involving a 53-qubit quantum computer, you can confidently know that in their secret labs, they very likely already have quantum computers operating with a far greater number of qubits.

At the time we were assembling those stories, we were not yet aware that D-Wave, a quantum computing company that provides exotic hardware to Google and other research organizations, has announced a 2048-qubit quantum computer.

The system is called the “D-Wave 2000Q” platform, and it features 2048 qubits, effectively allowing it to break military-grade encryption that uses 2048 or fewer encryption bits.

As explained in a D-Wave Systems brochure:

The D-Wave 2000Q system has up to 2048 qubits and 5600 couplers. To reach this scale, it uses 128,000 Josephson junctions, which makes the D-Wave 2000Q QPU by far the most complex superconducting integrated circuit ever built.

Other facts from D-Wave about its superconducting quantum computing platform:

  • The system consumes 25 kW of power, meaning it can be run on less electricity than what is typically wired into a residential home (which is typically 200 amps x 220 v, or 44 kW).
  • The system produces virtually no heat. “The required water cooling is on par with what a kitchen tap can provide,” says the D-Wave brochure.
  • The system provides a platform for truly incredible improvements in computational efficiency involving machine learning, financial modeling, neural networking, modeling proteins in chemistry and — most importantly — “factoring integers.”

“Factoring integers” means breaking encryption

The “factoring integers” line, found in the D-Wave brochure, is what’s causing unprecedented nervousness across cryptocurrency analysts right now, some of whom seem to be pushing the bizarre idea that quantum computers are an elaborate hoax in order to avoid having to admit that quantum computing renders cryptocurrency cryptography algorithms obsolete. (At least as currently structured, although perhaps there is a way around this in the future.)

“Factoring integers” is the key to breaking encryption. In fact, it is the extreme difficulty of factoring very large numbers that makes encryption incredibly difficult to break using classical computing. But as we have explained in this previous article, quantum computing translates exponentially complex mathematical problems into simple, linear (or you could call it “geometric”) math, making the computation ridiculously simple. (In truth, quantum computers are “computing” anything. The universe is doing the computations. The quantum computer is merely an interface that talks to the underlying computational nature of physical reality, which is all based on a hyper-computational matrix that calculates cause-effect solutions for all subatomic particles and atomic elements, across the entire cosmos. Depending on the number of bits involved, a quantum computer can take a problem that might require literally one billion years to solve on a classical computer and render a short list of likely answers in less than one second. (Again, depending on many variables, this is just a summary of the scale, not a precise claim about the specifications of a particular system.)

Given that D-Wave’s quantum computers cost only a few million dollars — while there are billions of dollars’ worth of crypto floating around that could be spoofed and redirected if you have a system that can easily crack cryptography — it seems to be a matter of economic certainty that, sooner or later, someone will acquire a quantum computing system and use it to steal cryptocurrency wallets by spoofing transactions. To be clear, I’m sure D-Wave likely vets its customers rather carefully, and the company would not knowingly provide its quantum computing tech to an organization that appeared to be motivated by malicious intent. Yet, realistically, we’ve all seen historical examples of advanced technology getting into the hands of twisted, evil people such as those who run the Federal Reserve, for example.

D-Wave quantum computers don’t really “compute” anything; they send mathematical questions into multiple dimensions, then retrieve the most likely answers

So how does quantum computing really work? As we’ve explained in several articles, these systems don’t really carry out “computing” in the classic work sense of the term. There is no “computing” taking place in the D-Wave hardware. The best way to describe this is to imagine quantum computers as computational stargates. They submit mathematical questions into a hyper-dimensional reality (the quantum reality of superposition, etc.), and the universe itself carries out the computation because the very fabric of reality is mathematical at its core. As some brilliant scientists say, the universe IS mathematics, and thus the fabric of reality cannot help but automatically compute solutions in every slice of time, with seemingly infinite computational capability down to the subatomic level.

Put another way, the world of quantum phenomena is constantly trying out all possible combinations and permutations of atomic spin states and subatomic particles, and it naturally and automatically derives the best combination that achieves the lowest energy state (i.e. the least amount of chaos).

The end result is that a short list of the best possible solutions “magically” (although it isn’t magic, it just seems like magic) appears in the spin states of the elements which represent binary registers. Thus, the answers to your computational problems are gifted back to you from the universe, almost as if the universe itself is a God-like computational guru that hands out free answers to any question that you can manage to present in binary. (Technically speaking, this also proves that the universe was created by an intelligent designer who expresses creation through mathematics.)

Programmers can easily break encryption codes using standard C++ commands that interface with the quantum portal

All of these quantum functions, by the way, are controlled by standard computer language code, including C++, Python and MATLAB. The system has its own API, and you can even submit commands to the quantum realm via its “Quantum Machine Instruction” (QMI) commands. As D-Wave explains in its brochure:

The D-Wave 2000Q system provides a standard Internet API (based on RESTful services), with client libraries available for C/C++, Python, and MATLAB. This interface allows users to access the system either as a cloud resource over a network, or integrated into their high-performance computing environments and data centers. Access is also available through D-Wave’s hosted cloud service. Using D-Wave’s development tools and client libraries, developers can create algorithms and applications within their existing environments using industry-standard tools.

While users can submit problems to the system in a number of different ways, ultimately a problem represents a set of values that correspond to the weights of the qubits and the strength of the couplers. The system takes these values along with other user-specified parameters and sends a single quantum machine instruction (QMI) to the QPU. Problem solutions correspond to the optimal configuration of qubits found; that is, the lowest points in the energy landscape. These values are returned to the user program over the network.

In other words, breaking cryptography is as simple as submitting the large integer to the quantum system as a series of bits which are then translated into electron spin states by the quantum hardware. From there, a “go” command is issued, and the universe solves the equation in a way that automatically derives the best combinations of multiple qubit spin states to achieve the lowest overall energy state (i.e. the simplest solution with the least chaos). A short list of the best possible factors of the large integer are returned in a time-sliced representation of the binary registers, which can be read over a regular network like any subroutine request.

From there, a classical computer can then try factoring the large integer with the short list of the best answers from the quantum system, using standard CPUs and code logic. Within a few tries from the short list, the correct factors are easily found. Once you have the factors, you now have the decryption keys to the original encrypted message, so decryption is effortless. In effect, you have used quantum computing to “cheat” the keys out of the system and hand them to you on a silver platter. (Or, in some cases, a holmium platter lined with platinum, or whatever exotic elements are being used in the quantum spin state hardware.)

Any competent programmer who has access to this technology, in other words, can break encryption almost without effort. The programming logic is not complex at all. The difficulty in such systems is in the hardware control systems, including spin state “reads” and “writes,” which are strongly affected by temperature and electromagnetic interference. The exotic hardware is the real breakthrough in all this, not the computational part. (Quantum computers are physics oracles, in a sense. The physics is the challenge, not the computer code.)

Most people cannot grasp quantum computing, but that’s not a reason to pretend it isn’t real

One of the more curious things I’ve found recently is that some writers and publishers who don’t understand quantum computing are trending in the direction of pretending it doesn’t exist. According to some, Google’s 53-qubit announcement was a hoax, which must also mean that, in their view, D-Wave Systems isn’t real and doesn’t sell quantum computers at all.

That is not a rational position. There’s no doubt that D-Wave is a real company with real hardware, and that Google already possesses 2048-qubit quantum computing capabilities. Furthermore, Google and the NSA have every reason to keep this fact secret for as long as possible, so that they can continue to scrape everyone’s “encrypted” emails and financial transactions, all of which can be retroactively decrypted any time the NSA wants to look more closely at your activities.

To me, it has long been obvious that the cosmos itself is inherently computational. Just look at the collapse of probability waves found in the orbital shells of electrons. It should be self-evident that the universe is computing solutions at the subatomic level in every instant, effortlessly and without apparent cost. The very framework of the cosmos is driven by mathematics and rapid computational solutions. Once you realize how much subatomic phenomena is quantized, it becomes blatantly apparent that the universe is digitized and mathematical. The entire construct in which we exist, in other words, is a mathematical simulation, perhaps created by God for the purpose of amusing himself by watching our collective stupidity.

D-Wave Systems, by the way, knows exactly what’s up with all this. Their goal is to make quantum computing available to the masses. They also seem to hint at the hyperdimensional reality of how quantum computing works. From their brochure: (emphasis added)

While the D-Wave quantum computer is the most advanced in the world, the quantum computing revolution has only begun. Our vision is of a future where quantum computers will be accessible and of value to all, solving the world’s most complex computing problems. This will require advances in many dimensions and contributions from experts in diverse domains. It is exciting to see increasing investment worldwide, advances in research and technology, and a growing ecosystem of developers, users, and applications needed to deliver on that vision.

I can tell that the D-Wave people are some very smart folks. Maybe if these systems get at least an order of magnitude less expensive, we could buy one, install it in our mass spec lab, and start throwing computational questions at the universe.

Personally, if I had one of these systems, I would use it to solve protein folding questions for all the obvious reasons. Then I would probably have it start looking for blood and urine biomarkers for cancer. You could make a fortune applying quantum computing to solving horse race betting and handicapping equations, but that would seem silly compared to what the system is really capable of. Another application would be solving atomic decay patterns to derive the best way to synthesize antimatter, which can be used to power faster-than-light drive systems. Sadly, the deep state will probably use this technology to surveil humanity and enslave everyone with AI facial recognition and “precrime” predictive accusations that get translated into red flag laws. Once the tech giants profile you psychologically and behaviorally, a quantum computing system can easily compute your likelihood of becoming the next mass shooter. You could be found guilty by “quantum law” even if you’ve never pulled the trigger.

As with all technologies, this one will be abused by governments to control and enslave humanity. It doesn’t mean the technology is at fault but rather the lack of morality and ethics among fallen humans.

Microsoft wants to make its cloud the platform 'for every workload on the planet,' and one way it's doing that is helping startups win bigger customers (MSFT)

When Chad Fowler, general manager of startups at Microsoft, initially joined the company through its acquisition of the Berlin-based productivity app startup Wunderlist, he felt that Microsoft was an "unlikely suitor" because it was a "sales-y company" that "didn't really get startups."

"I would describe myself as one of the least likely eventual Microsoft employees," Fowler told Business Insider. "I grew up in the '90s in technology companies, and I was very much on the open source side of the world. Microsoft's perception and resonance with that community is pretty well known historically."

Fowler meant that back in the 1990s, Microsoft often fought with open source, or software that's free for anyone to download and contribute to. Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer even called the popular open source operating system Linux "a cancer." 

Fowler says that he still had these misconceptions, even after he joined Microsoft initially, but since then, Microsoft has made a turnaround. Now, he's leading a program called Microsoft for Startups, which was launched in February 2018. It helps startups sell their products to Microsoft's customers and teaches them how to scale up.

"I think of myself as a startup person first and an open source person second, and here I am doing that stuff in the context of Microsoft where I never thought I would actually be, but the company is different now," Fowler said.

The startup program underscores the radical shift at Microsoft in the five years since Satya Nadella took the CEO reins, leaving behind old hangups and propelling the company to a trillion dollar market valuation. For Microsoft, forging close ties with startups represents an important market opportunity as it tries to make headway against Amazon in the booming cloud computing market.

Charlotte Yarkoni, corporate vice president of commerce and ecosystem in the cloud and AI division at Microsoft, says that while startups have talented engineering teams, they often need help selling, so that's where Microsoft is uniquely positioned to help.

Startups on their own may have a harder time getting in front of enterprise customers in fields such as health care or manufacturing, but Microsoft for Startups gives them access to Microsoft's customer base. It also gives startups credits for Microsoft's cloud, Microsoft Azure, making startups likely to pick Azure as their cloud of choice to run their software. As a result, Microsoft sees helping these startups as an investment. 

"Startups are important because they do represent a lot of the innovation, whether it's building new workloads or even developing new trends and technologies that are more forefront in terms of business models they're contemplating," Yarkoni told Business Insider.

'Help first, sell last'

It's a win for Microsoft, too. Yarkoni says these startups may end up becoming partners in the future. 

"What we really wanted to do is build more of a startup ecosystem that represented a partner ecosystem for us, a budding partner ecosystem," Yarkoni said.

Microsoft also offers these startups credits for its cloud Microsoft Azure and helps them onboard onto it. If these startups sell their product on Microsoft's cloud, it also benefits Microsoft, and Microsoft gets to see "interesting new solutions" running on its cloud, Yarkoni says.

"We aspire for our cloud to be the platform for every workload on the planet," Yarkoni said. "These newer workloads and the innovations they bring are fantastic for us to have on our cloud."

Still, Fowler says helping startups is his top priority. His mission is to "help first, sell last."

Yarkoni says that startups who are part of the Microsoft program see an immediate increase in their businesses, with an average deal size "north of six figures."

"We continue to hear from startups that the most valuable thing we can do for them is help them win customers," Yarkoni said. 

'These startups today are the big enterprise customers of the future.'

Fowler worked on the Wunderlist team at Microsoft for a while, but he missed the startup world. When he met Yarkoni, she pitched him the idea of leading startup teams and advising founders, which he thought would be "the best of both worlds."

"Startups are small companies usually," Fowler said. "You can think of it as an investment. Not every startup that we work with goes on to become a unicorn and eventually IPO, but we do believe that Microsoft was a startup one day as well. These startups today are the big enterprise customers of the future."

Now, he leads the startup team, helping startups land deals with big companies and guiding them through technological and business expertise that they will need when selling to enterprise customers. The team is staffed with people who have gone through the pains of growing startups, such as having to completely rewrite their technology as the company grows. 

Fowler recalls that at Wunderlist, when a large customer contacted it to buy a large license, the team had no idea how to address things like disaster recovery and data privacy standards. He recalls that when Wunderlist was first building a sales team, the team "had no idea what we were doing."

"We hired the wrong sorts of people," Fowler said. "We were doing the wrong processes, all kinds of classic mistakes. What we do at the Microsoft for Startups program is become that trusted adviser that helps startups through that time."

Yarkoni says Microsoft plans to continue its investment in this program, including in its presence around the world and also in female founders. She says the number of startups coming into the program is growing. 

"Thes startup ecosystem is a great representation of meeting these communities where they are. It's very much the cornerstone of our startup philosophy," Yarkoni said. "Helping Microsoft get more engaged in the community is really something we're quite proud of, and we obviously want to share our journey as we go."

  • Google Cloud still doesn't have as many deals with large enterprises, but these companies are starting to at least consider Google Cloud, analysts say.

For years, analysts were skeptical that Google Cloud could ever catch up to its rivals Amazon Web Services and Microsoft — the first- and second-place cloud providers, respectively. 

Karl Keirstead, managing director at Deutsche Bank, tells Business Insider that he thought Google Cloud would remain a "distant third," But the arrival of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian who came from Oracle, "changed everything," he said.  

For one thing, Kurian has been making several new leadership hires at Google Cloud, which Keirstead calls "one of the most impressive bursts of hiring that we've ever seen from a large tech firm." What's more, even though Google Cloud hasn't scored many "mega-deal wins" yet he says that large companies are increasingly viewing it as a viable option. 

"He's built a fantastic leadership team, essentially pulling talent from other tech organizations that also serve the large enterprise market," Keirstead told Business Insider. 

The reason for the earlier skepticism didn't have much to do with Google Cloud itself.

"Having been built by Google, it's world class," Keirstead said. "Google has never built up an enterprise sales marketing branding and presence that can hold a candle to Microsoft. Whereas Amazon started relatively early and also didn't have as much of an enterprise presence, they just had longer to build it out."

In the bigger picture, Google Cloud is making the right investments in hiring and infrastructure – and it's poised to go from an $8 billion cloud business today to nearly $17 billion in revenue in 2021, Deutsche Bank research analyst Lloyd Walmsley wrote in a note for clients.

"It's money well spent, and I think they will be able to scale to margins that look more to AWS in the next three to five years," Walmsley told Business Insider. "We don't think, looking three years from now, they'll get to AWS on the same scale, but we think they can get to attractive margins on a three to five year basis."

New hires

Under Kurian, Google Cloud plans to triple its salesforce in a move seemingly taken from his former employer Oracle. To help manage all that growth, Google Cloud has made some key hires. 

Keirstead highlights says former SAP exec Robert Enslin, president of global customer operations, is a key hire. Others include VP and Head of Platform Amit Zavery from Oracle, EMEA President Chris Ciauri from Salesforce, Engineering VP Sunil Potti from Nutanix, and Engineering VP Yanbing Li from VMware.

Those hires are a good start, say the Deutsche Bank analysts: It's not cheap to attract hires of that caliber, they say, but it's a worthy investment in helping signal to would-be customers how serious Google Cloud is about winning their business. However, the analysts warn, that doesn't automatically translate into winning those big deals.

The 'larger deal wins are likely to come'

Keirstead sees rising interest from Fortune 500 companies, making him "confident that the larger deal wins are likely to come."

Keirstead says he hasn't heard about many Fortune 500 companies fully embracing Google Cloud, but winning large deals against AWS or Microsoft will take time. Some of Google Cloud's recent major customer wins include HSBC, Mayo Clinic, Macy's, and KeyBank.

Keirstead said that he recently attended a Google Cloud event in New York City with mostly financial services and banks in attendance. He says that while it's true that most of them weren't Google Cloud customers, there's something to be said for the fact that these old-school institutions were at least taking it under serious consideration. 

"They tend to be cautious buyers that move relatively slowly," Keirstead said. "This will be one of the last big markets that Google Cloud will end up going after. We took some comfort in the fact that some very large banks were there, evaluating Google Cloud."

Another aspect Google Cloud will have to fix is cultural. While Google has traditionally focused on the technology above all else, Walmsley said, it will have to learn how to take customers' concerns more seriously and act on them. 

"That's something culturally that may still encumber them," Walmsley said. 

'Currying favor' with developers

Under the legacy IT model, it was the CIO or CTO who made major technology decisions, like picking which cloud to use. However, as evidenced by Microsoft's purchase of GitHub, cloud providers are becoming aware that it's increasingly developers who drive IT spending.

He says in this sense, Google has an advantage because it's active in open source, the community of developers who write software that's free for anyone to use and download. Google engineers often contribute code to popular projects — the popular cloud project Kubernetes was even created at Google

In comparison, while Amazon's cloud is known as being developer friendly, it has a reputation for using open source code without giving anything back, Keirstead says. He says that, anecdotally, smaller startups are increasingly looking at building on Google Cloud rather than AWS, which he takes as a reflection of Google's strength in open source.

"Currying favor with and providing good functional software to the developer community is fairly essential and becoming a big strategy for the cloud providers," Keirstead said.

With developers on Google Cloud's side, Keirstead says what's left is to grow its sales.

"If they can scale up the leadership team and close the sales gap with Microsoft and Amazon, I think that's all they need to have a legitimate market share in that space," Keirstead said.

On the Limits of Learning to Actively Learn Semantic Representations. (arXiv:1910.02228v1 [cs.CL])

One of the goals of natural language understanding is to develop models that map sentences into meaning representations. However, training such models requires expensive annotation of complex structures, which hinders their adoption. Learning to actively-learn (LTAL) is a recent paradigm for reducing the amount of labeled data by learning a policy that selects which samples should be labeled. In this work, we examine LTAL for learning semantic representations, such as QA-SRL. We show that even an oracle policy that is allowed to pick examples that maximize performance on the test set (and constitutes an upper bound on the potential of LTAL), does not substantially improve performance compared to a random policy. We investigate factors that could explain this finding and show that a distinguishing characteristic of successful applications of LTAL is the interaction between optimization and the oracle policy selection process. In successful applications of LTAL, the examples selected by the oracle policy do not substantially depend on the optimization procedure, while in our setup the stochastic nature of optimization strongly affects the examples selected by the oracle. We conclude that the current applicability of LTAL for improving data efficiency in learning semantic meaning representations is limited.


          

Automatic Testing and Improvement of Machine Translation. (arXiv:1910.02688v1 [cs.SE])

This paper presents TransRepair, a fully automatic approach for testing and repairing the consistency of machine translation systems. TransRepair combines mutation with metamorphic testing to detect inconsistency bugs (without access to human oracles). It then adopts probability-reference or cross-reference to post-process the translations, in a grey-box or black-box manner, to repair the inconsistencies. Our evaluation on two state-of-the-art translators, Google Translate and Transformer, indicates that TransRepair has a high precision (99%) on generating input pairs with consistent translations. With these tests, using automatic consistency metrics and manual assessment, we find that Google Translate and Transformer have approximately 36% and 40% inconsistency bugs. Black-box repair fixes 28% and 19% bugs on average for Google Translate and Transformer. Grey-box repair fixes 30% bugs on average for Transformer. Manual inspection indicates that the translations repaired by our approach improve consistency in 87% of cases (degrading it in 2%), and that our repairs have better translation acceptability in 27% of the cases (worse in 8%).


          

On the complexity of quasiconvex integer minimization problem. (arXiv:1807.02790v3 [math.OC] UPDATED)

In this paper, we consider the class of quasiconvex functions and its proper subclass of conic functions. The integer minimization problem of these functions is considered in the paper, assuming that an optimized function is defined by the comparison oracle. We will show that there is no a polynomial algorithm on $\log R$ to optimize quasiconvex functions in the ball of integer radius $R$ using only the comparison oracle. On the other hand, if an optimized function is conic, then we show that there is a polynomial on $\log R$ algorithm. We also present an exponential on the dimension lower bound for the oracle complexity of the conic function integer optimization problem. Additionally, we give examples of known problems that can be polynomially reduced to the minimization problem of functions in our classes.


          

Reconstruction under outliers for Fourier-sparse functions. (arXiv:1907.04274v2 [cs.DS] UPDATED)

We consider the problem of learning an unknown $f$ with a sparse Fourier spectrum in the presence of outlier noise. In particular, the algorithm has access to a noisy oracle for (an unknown) $f$ such that (i) the Fourier spectrum of $f$ is $k$-sparse; (ii) at any query point $x$, the oracle returns $y$ such that with probability $1-\rho$, $|y-f(x)| \le \epsilon$. However, with probability $\rho$, the error $y-f(x)$ can be arbitrarily large.

We study Fourier sparse functions over both the discrete cube $\{0,1\}^n$ and the torus $[0,1)$ and for both these domains, we design efficient algorithms which can tolerate any $\rho<1/2$ fraction of outliers. We note that the analogous problem for low-degree polynomials has recently been studied in several works~[AK03, GZ16, KKP17] and similar algorithmic guarantees are known in that setting.

While our main results pertain to the case where the location of the outliers, i.e., $x$ such that $|y-f(x)|>\epsilon$ is randomly distributed, we also study the case where the outliers are adversarially located. In particular, we show that over the torus, assuming that the Fourier transform satisfies a certain \emph{granularity} condition, there is a sample efficient algorithm to tolerate $\rho =\Omega(1)$ fraction of outliers and further, that this is not possible without such a granularity condition. Finally, while not the principal thrust, our techniques also allow us non-trivially improve on learning low-degree functions $f$ on the hypercube in the presence of adversarial outlier noise.

Our techniques combine a diverse array of tools from compressive sensing, sparse Fourier transform, chaining arguments and complex analysis.

Modern problems in AI or in numerical analysis require nonsmooth approaches with a flexible calculus. We introduce generalized derivatives called conservative fields for which we develop a calculus and provide representation formulas. Functions having a conservative field are called path differentiable: convex, concave, Clarke regular and any semialgebraic Lipschitz continuous functions are path differentiable. Using Whitney stratification techniques for semialgebraic and definable sets, our model provides variational formulas for nonsmooth automatic differentiation oracles, as for instance the famous backpropagation algorithm in deep learning. Our differential model is applied to establish the convergence in values of nonsmooth stochastic gradient methods as they are implemented in practice.

Daniel использовал утилиту MindNode для составления данной диаграммы апгрейда на vCD 10. Как видно на картинках, там описаны разные варианты исходной системы, например, вы решите пойти по пути обновления только Linux / External PostgreSQL (PgSQL) с раздельной инсталляцией vCD или сделаете интегрированные виртуальные модули vCloud Director.

Для Linux-систем Daniel отмечает следующие моменты:

  1. vCD 10.0 поддерживает только PostgreSQL, у него нет больше поддержки Microsoft SQL Server. Oracle уже прекратил поддерживаться ранее, поэтому все пути миграции ведут на PgSQL в данных диаграммах.
  2. Использование виртуального модуля vCD позволяет обеспечить высокую доступность PgSQL, но в случае сбоя нужно будет вручную переключаться на реплику.
  3. Использование внешнего экземпляра PostgreSQL полностью поддерживается. Но нужно внимательно следить за конфигурацией соединения к БД.
  4. VMware будет продолжать поставлять как установщик, так и виртуальный модуль vCD. Поэтому можно использовать оба варианта, в зависимости от нужд вашей команды.

How Blockchain, IoT and Brand Compliance Protect Food Quality

A recent study published by FMI and Label Insight showed that almost all (93%) of consumers say it’s important for brands and manufacturers to provide detailed information about what’s in food and how it’s made. In addition, the vast majority (74%) say they would switch from the brand they usually buy to another brand that provides more in-depth product information, beyond what’s on the physical label.

This isn’t surprising given continuing quality issues resulting in food recalls and shelf withdrawals. As recently as last year, two major outbreaks of E. coli infections were tied to consumption of romaine lettuce. The second of these, which made people sick in multiple U.S. states and Canadian provinces, essentially emptied all store shelves of romaine lettuce right before Thanksgiving.

Besides impacting customer trust, brand loyalty and the bottom line of companies involved were affected. Research undertaken by Allianz reports that recall costs can reach $10m for significant events. And it can get worse: the 2008 peanut contamination incident impacted 200 companies and 4,000 products and is estimated to have cost $1b.

Food Safety Challenges

Under current rules, all participants in the food supply chain must record the source of their ingredients and the destination of the resulting product to aid in tracing the source of food contamination and managing recalls. However, most of this information is stored either manually or in closed, internal computer systems making a speedy response to a food safety incident impossible.

For a few years, a number of retailers have been looking for a better solution and have identified blockchain technology as a likely way forward. Originally developed to manage financial transactions involving cryptocurrency, blockchain has proven to be capable of providing a verifiable record of the movement of goods through a supply chain.

Some want to go even further and use IoT (Internet of Things) sensors to monitor the condition (e.g. temperature) of food products in the supply chain. In summary, blockchain can help trace the path the product took through the supply chain and IoT can monitor the environmental conditions en-route. Smarter Food Safety Initiative & Technology To Help

One retailer has been piloting blockchain for over a year and has already proven the value on produce items. Now the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) agrees and has created the Smarter Food Safety initiative to “leverage technology, and other tools, to create a more digital, traceable and safer food system.” The “New Era of Smarter Food Safety” initiative is being led by Deputy Commissioner and former Walmart executive Frank Yiannas. Following a period of brainstorming and consultation, they plan to publish a strategic blueprint early in 2020 that will outline the actions they are planning.

So is supply chain traceability solved and can we look forward to a dramatic reduction in food contamination issues? Not so fast - supporting a few simple products with one ingredient and a one-step supply chain is one thing, but how do you scale to address the needs of the average private label retailer now handling over 10,000 active products from 2,000 production sites globally? And how do you manage the complexity of a product like tiramisu or a chicken ready-meal with dozens of ingredients all coming from different sources?

Unlock the Potential of Data-led Commerce Solutions

In retail, the customer is king – except when they’re not. Several cases exist where the business cannot meet customer demands – either because it’s physically impossible, financially unprofitable, or ethically untractable. The retail organization needs to adjust for unplanned, unintentional, or changed behaviors without alienating the customer. This is where data comes in. Relevant data can be used to prevent, mitigate, or divert these scenarios where the business is unable to meet customer demands. From Forrester VP and Principal Analyst Brendan Witcher’s (@BrendanWitcher) definition below, the implicit concept of data-led capabilities is using data for the customer’s benefit (rather than the retailer).

Let’s explore three use cases where the customer’s demands aren’t met and how data-led solutions can help mitigate disasters in customer experience:

Experiential cases: Stockouts/Merchandising

One place where retailers may be challenged to meet consumer demands is online stockouts. A customer may be seeking a product on the retailer’s ecommerce site, but stores don’t have the product and DC's are unable to distribute it within a reasonable timeframe. In some cases the customer may even be seeking a product that the retailer doesn't sell. The power of data to provide alternatives and substitutes, as well as anticipation of customer actions, can help to mitigate such a situation to avoid customer rejection and a poor experience for the brand. Here is where it’s important to put in data-led engagement that allows for customer options to be positive and continue to maintain a pleasing customer experience. For example, Neiman Marcus embeds quantity limits into their site messaging as a customer goes through the process of selecting a product online. This data-led action prevents major headaches after the customer has already driven to the store.

Experiential cases: Personalization

According to Accenture’s 2018 Personalization Pulse Check Report2, 48% of consumers have left a brand's website and purchased somewhere else due to a poorly-curated experience. Personalization is critical to retail and pretty complicated – especially because customer stats are fluid and changing. Unfortunately, many retailers base personalization on limited data or even a single data point. The perfect example where retailers blunder is the “already bought that” syndrome. A customer wanders onto a website, selects a new blender, then abandons it in their cart or maybe just views the product and leaves the site.

During the next few weeks, the customer is overwhelmed with retargeted ads focused on blenders across every site he or she visits. Nerve-wracked, the poor customer caves in and buys a new blender at the local appliance store. A few weeks later, the customer needs a new toaster, so they return to the original website. Unfortunately, all the recommendations, visual search listings, and special offers on the site are tied to blender features – quiet blenders, multi-purpose blenders, long-lasting blenders, digital blenders, and more. The epic fail on the part of the retailer comes with a cost, and the customer’s needs for a toaster are left unmet. Context for the customer becomes the heart of a strong personalized experience. Data tools can diminish exposure to the ‘blender’ and focus on other products based on clickstream information with simple business rules or more complicated AI tools. Despite prior customer demand, data-led site dynamics can provide the customer with what they need in real time.

Experiential cases: Poor Fulfillment

Almost all retailers face fulfillment issues where shipments are late, products are damaged, or shipments are sent to the wrong place. In some cases the retailer can do little about the Teamsters strike that prevented products from being loaded at port or the cyber-attack on the freight carrier that routed packages from New York to Atlanta. However, tracking and data points are available that identify the situation for the customer, and many times transparency is key. The right data-led actions can offer the customer options on next steps – which are much more appreciated than keeping them in the dark.

An automatic data-triggered email with options to continue the current shipment, reorder, or cancel the current shipment and order a replacement product can be a powerful engagement tool for the retailer. Even a notification to the customer that the shipment is late will provide more clarity than leaving the customer in the dark. These data-led actions would allow for unforeseen circumstances to still allow a satisfactory customer experience. The right tools online can even identify and adjust shipping paths to ensure the customer receives their rerouted package.

Customer demands will drive business, but data will be the savior when resources fall short to meet them. A data-led business operates with data that supports the goals of the customer, encouraging messaging and options that mitigate situations to provide satisfactory customer experiences.

It looks like Oracle has language detection as part of their "Globalization Development Kit" ... but what about open source? Sadly, the Nutch Language Identifier Plugin only supports European languages, no CJK. What are the other options?

Hi Klaus, I run in the same issue last year but with SAP on a large (2x10) core virtual machine. I partially reproduced the issue with hammerDB and I ended up disabling NUMA on SQL Server which increased performance. Please note that Oracle suggests to disable NUMA too in equivalent scenarios. But your post make me think... What could I do with SAP?

USU Philosophy Professor Accepts He'll Never Know Himself

Looking inward is the first commandment of philosophy, but Charlie Huenemann didn’t know if he believed in such a thing anymore.

He thought about this as he hiked up the Wind Caves trail, a song by the piano composer Phillip Glass playing in his ears. His dog, a border collie named Maggie, moved ahead of him.

“Who am I?” the 54-year-old philosopher asked himself, as philosophers do. “Do I really know myself like I think I do?”

He looked up at the summer sun. It offered no answers.

Huenemann thought about another philosopher who enjoyed climbing up mountains while pondering philosophical questions. Although Friedrich Nietzsche was buried more than a century ago, he battled the same questions as Huenemann. Nietzsche, too, believed most people don’t even know themselves.

The burden of a philosopher was as it ever was.

For the first couple years of his teaching career at Utah State University, Huenemann figured he had most things figured out. Now a quarter-century into his tenure as a professor of philosophy, though, he says he’s in a regular state of doubt. Those doubts may never be resolved, but Huenemann is fine with that.

He has realized looking at one’s behavior is more important than looking at one’s thoughts, which has helped him accept he’ll never truly know himself.

While Huenemann was working as a professor, he began to reflect on his teaching. “Teachers get a lot of encouragement from students. They write nice things and thank you notes, which is great, but I think a lot of times people are coincidentally there when the students develop a skill,” Huenemann said.

He started to think hard if he was actually being helpful to students or not. Such thinking led to even deeper questions, especially since this was when he discovered Nietzsche.

“I admire Nietzsche,” Huenemann said. “His thoughts on self-knowledge are like when a doctor gives you painful medicine to feel better. At first, it causes discomfort, but it’s better for you in the end.”

Huenemann pities Nietzsche, too.

As a young boy, Nietzsche had a tumor growing in his brain, which caused him a lifetime of headaches. He faced the challenge of his own mortality and went mad at around the age of 50. 

The philosopher wrote books and tried to sell them, but no one wanted to read them. The last 10 years of Nietzsche’s life were spent in an asylum.

Since his discovery of Nietzsche, Huenemann has been skeptical about one’s inner self.
The philosophy professor contemplates theories of the past considered wrong today, such as the geocentric model. He has adopted the attitude of “everybody lies,” which is from the character Gregory House in the television series called “House.” He is reading articles about pragmatists like John Dewey, who say the meaning of a sentence has to do with the work of the sentence rather than the sentence’s meaning or feeling.

Huenemann also keeps a journal of his thoughts. “Periodically, I’ll review my journal and realize I have written an idea four different times. Each time, the idea seems new, but the journal is proof it’s not new,” he said.

However, Huenemann doesn’t let these hard questions overtake his life, as he doesn’t see them as a struggle. Instead, he looks at his own behavior over his inward thoughts and ideas.

“We can deceive ourselves pretty easily,” Huenemann said. “To help with this, I look to action and experience. Experience is the great test of our knowledge.”

For example, according to Huenemann, if a person claims to believe in climate change but still drives their car, they’re a hypocrite. Or if another person thinks they’re miserable and horrible, but their actions say otherwise, then their actions speak louder than their words.

Huenemann looks to what others say about him, too. If a student says he’s a good teacher, but they’ve never taken one of his classes, he doubts their evaluation of him. “I look for reasons why they might think that about me,” Huenemann said. “If they find a good reason, I say to myself, ‘Oh, they must be right.’”

According to USU assistant professor Harrison Kleiner, it’s not surprising to him Huenemann is so skeptical about one’s inner self, as philosophy draws people who are interested in self-knowledge. “Some philosophers would say we know more about the weather on Jupiter than we know ourselves,” Kleiner said.

Kleiner has known Huenemann since the fall of 2004. At the time, he had been looking for a job in philosophy, and Huenemann gave him one. The two became fast friends, and eventually the two argued philosophically about their different viewpoints on the inexhaustible task of acquiring self-knowledge.

“One time he said to me, ‘Harrison, the difference between us is that you believe things and I don’t,’” Kleiner said. He chuckled. “Charlie thinks ‘I’ is an illusion. I don’t think the self is an illusion.”

In Kleiner’s eyes, Huenemann believes there may be nothing really to know, which gives him a detached observation between himself and the rest of the world. “He has these habits of living that are working out for him, so he keeps doing them. I think we have a reason for doing things,” Kleiner said.

While Kleiner may not completely agree with Huenemann’s view on life, he sees the benefits of his mentor’s thinking. There’s some health in being cool, calm and collected like Huenemann, according to Kleiner. “People are made anxious in thinking they have to fight the world in everything they do, but the world is going to move on without them eventually,” Kleiner said.

For those who are struggling to know themselves, Huenemann offers three pieces of advice.
First, be patient. “People who don’t know themselves often feel inadequate. They must realize knowing themselves is a work in progress,” Huenemann said.

The second step is mindfulness. According to Huenemann, the best way to do this is to “try to distance yourself from your thoughts by passively observing them.”

Lastly, one should look out for other people. Trying to discern one’s lack of self-knowledge is selfish in Huenemann’s eyes, so, to combat this, one can look out and love other people.

While this advice isn’t all encompassing, it has helped Huenemann mentor his children.
Hanna Huenemann, Charlie Heuenemann’s daughter, said while her dad had never directly talked to her about his thoughts on self-knowledge, they have talked about aspects of the self on several occasions.

“I find my dad to be someone who is easy to talk to about self understanding, as he has his own discoveries about himself every so often,” she said. “I think he’s happy to adjust for what he learns about himself, and he doesn’t mind not knowing everything.”

Huenemann’s son, Ben Huenemann, said, “My dad has a very logical mind, which he applies to work and every social situation,” he said. Ben Huenemann experienced this first-hand when he took his dad’s intro to philosophy class at USU.

According to the 18-year-old, every once in a while his father decides to play video games for two hours and then spends the next two hours not playing video games as maybe some sort of self-discovery exercise. His dad can’t help but look at video games philosophically, which is why the book “How You Play the Game: A Philosopher Plays Minecraft” was written.

“He likes to come up with his own things,” Ben Huenemann said, even if those things are playing “dumb, specific games like ‘Skyrim’ or ‘Minecraft.’”

Huenemann could never come up with a true definition of himself, though.

Huenemann and his family stared in amazement at the Temple of Apollo, the supposed place of worship for the ancient high priestess called the Oracle of Delphi. Although the Greek ruins weren’t bigger than the Quad at USU, they provided a thrilling reality of the origin of the Delphic maxim “know thyself.”

In the summer sun, Huenemann walked around the site, his family following close behind. He wasn’t overwhelmed by what was left of the Temple of Apollo, but he wasn’t disappointed, either. He imagined the inscriptions once written on the front of the temple, thinking about the people who engraved them.

“All these people try to know the universe but think knowing themselves should be a no-brainer,” Huenemann said.

The first commandment of philosophy crossed his mind.

“I guess I’m still trying to fulfill that assignment,” he thought to himself.

Quantum Supremacy? Yes and No!

Quantum Supremacy Is and Is Not

How quantum is that?! The RadioFreeHPC team discusses the Google/NASA paper, titled "Quantum Supremacy Using a Programmable Superconducting Processor", that was published and then unpublished. But it's the internet and everything is a "digital tattoo", so there are copies out there (see below).

The paper, right in its title, and at least in that draft form, claimed Quantum supremacy. "Doing what?" we hope you ask. Well, nothing particularly significant, and decidedly quantum-friendly. You might even call it "embarrassingly quantum" since quantum is all about probability functions and this experiment samples the probability distribution of a repeated experiment. But it's not nothing. 

One scary consequence of quantum supremacy is its ability to readily factorize large numbers which could be used to unscramble encrypted data. But A) this is not what happened, B) it's not expected to happen any time soon (think years), and C) it will depend on the specific encryption algorithm. We must say, however, that the paper looks pretty good. Here's the abstract. Click on the title to read it all:

Quantum supremacy using a programmable superconducting processor

Google AI Quantum and collaborators The tantalizing promise of quantum computers is that certain computational tasks might be executed exponentially faster on a quantum processor than on a classical processor. A fundamental challenge is to build a high-fidelity processor capable of running quantum algorithms in an exponentially large computational space. Here, we report using a processor with programmable superconducting qubits to create quantum states on 53 qubits, occupying a state space 253∼1016. Measurements from repeated experiments sample the corresponding probability distribution, which we verify using classical simulations. While our processor takes about 200 seconds to sample one instance of the quantum circuit 1 million times, a state-of-the-art supercomputer would require approximately 10,000 years to perform the equivalent task. This dramatic speedup relative to all known classical algorithms provides an experimental realization of quantum supremacy on a computational task and heralds the advent of a much-anticipated computing paradigm.


LANL gets the First 5,000 Qubit D-Wave

Meanwhile, D-Wave announced that its new 5,000 qubit quantum computer has found its first home at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Qubits are different from vendor to vendor in terms of the underlying technology and implementation. Shahin lists several.

The mastermind behind it was was arrested and imprisoned for unrelated charges. Henry is really turning this into a good news segment. Dan isn't encouraged, however.


Catch of the Week

Shahin talks about using consumer electronics to build supercomputers, mentioning the recent 1,060 node Raspberry Pi cluster built by Oracle, reminiscent of the one LANL did in 2017. AFRL build a 1,760 node cluster of PlayStations, based on the IBM/Sony/Toshiba Cell processor, in 2010 following similar efforts starting in the mid 2000s. He also recalls similar projects he may have had something to do with: SGI's Project Molecule and Project Kelvin (for cooling) in 2008 (also here), and also a cluster of JavaStations at Sun in the late 90s.

Dan discusses a UCLA project to use the thermoelectric effect and build "a device that makes electricity at night using heat radiating from the ground". Intriguing, but looks a tad too pricey for what it can deliver right now.

Speaking of Intriguing, Henry talks about DNA storage. Incredible data density, but don't ask what file system it uses or whether you can have it on a USB stick any time soon. Dan and Shahin seem to have more fun with this topic than Henry!
