Daz Studio Content Creation with Blender

 Cache

Interested to use the free modelling software Blender in your DAZ Content Creation workflow?

Join SickleYield for this two part tutorial on taking advantage of Blender, the free open source 3D creation suite.

A first reaction to learning Blender is to to push all the buttons and wait for something to happen, but with that haphazard way of learning, the novelty of that will soon wear off!

There's no faster way to understand something than to learn from someone who does. SickleYield has had Blender incorporated into her workflow for creating content with DAZ Studio in the very long term. She's very familiar with everything to watch for when using this toolset.

In this two part course, we're going to be creating a sword prop and then a loin cloth. These are items providing simplicity, yet allowing for variation where you can follow along and create your own masterpieces!

New to Blender?

We include a bonus Blender shortcuts PDF, which will speed up your operation with Blender.

About SickleYield

SickleYield lives in the Western USA and has been making 3d content since around 2009.  She started out with Victoria 4 in Poser 6 and gradually switched over to a dual workflow, then to just Daz Studio after the Figure Setup Tools became available.

She has sold at Renderosity since 2010 and Daz3d since 2012.

SickleYield started out with only Blender and the GIMP and gradually added 3d Coat, then Zbrush, then Marvelous Designer, and recently Substance Painter and RealFlow.

Almost from the beginning SickleYield offered free tutorials on her deviantart blog, and in 2015 she began offering free video tutorials on her YouTube channel.  She is strongly committed to community education and to sharing information with budding artists as they find their way through the difficult process of learning to make marketable content.  It is her firm belief that competition make us stronger and that an artistic community stagnates without an influx of new ideas.

In her spare time SickleYield loves RPG gaming, with the Elder Scrolls, Bioshock and recent Fallout games being favorites, and she also enjoys Pokemon Go, sipping diet soda in front of genre movies and being yelled at by a very needy diva of a cat.  Her desk is always covered with toys and action figures and her work computers are normally supervised by a large plastic shark.

Ruby on Rails Migration

 Cache

Originally posted on: http://staffofgeeks.net/afeng/archive/2006/09/30/92832.aspx#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/11213&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com

Recently I decided to check out the beta version of Agile Web Development with Rails book, which is targeted to be released this fall.  It is very interesting that the authors also brought agility into book writing.  It allows readers to provide feedback to new material during the development of the book.  I am also glad to see that the migration part of the framework has become a big part of the book, even having a separate chapter dedicated to it.  It uses migration instead of DDL in the entire demo application.  Besides the migration, there are many significant updates to various parts of the book. But in this post, I will focus mostly on the migration tool.

The migration tool is targeting Rails applications, but it can also be useful outside the Rails world.  There are some people out there already (includes us, here is my old post on it) experimenting using Rails migration as "Enterprise glue" to maintain database schemas.  I hope the final release version of the book will have something on this topic.

I will outline the basics of rails migration below for those are not familiar with it.

What is Ruby on Rails Migration?

At the most simple level, it allows developers to change the database schema as the application requires it in a simple and easy manner.  Instead of writing DDL scripts, you use Ruby as a DSL (domain specific language) to describe what the schema should look like when the changes are required.

Why use it?

The migration tool allows developers to upgrade or downgrade a schema version without loosing data (of course, if you drop stuff it will be lost).  Sure, you can write DDL that does the same thing for you (sort of, but not really without some external tooling), but it will take a lot more effort especially when you are supporting more than one database.  In theory, the migration script you write for one database should work on other databases as long as the operation is supported (currently, it supports all major databases including open source alternatives).  I said in theory because not all databases behave exactly the same way for a given operation. There might be some minor differences, but that's for another post.  If you need to extend or change the existing migration functionality, it is usually very easy to do so.

How does it work?

You basically write a Ruby class that inherits from ActiveRecord::Migration to describe what needs to be accomplished.  There are only two methods you need to write, up and down.  Up method will be called during an upgrade, and down method for downgrading.

class AddTable < ActiveRecord::Migration
  def self.up#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/11213&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com
    create_table :cars do |t|
      t.colu#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/11213&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.commn :model,       :string
      t.colu#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/11213&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.commn :year,          :int
      t.colu#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/11213&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.commn :make,        :string
      t.colu#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/11213&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.commn :comments, :text
    end
  end

  def self.down#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/11213&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com
    drop_table :cars
  end
end

In this trivial example, it creates a cars table with model, year, make, and comments columns.  One interesting thing to note about model and make columns are both string type.  This is not DDL we are working with.  Migration uses Ruby classes to encapsulate the internal database types in order to abstract out the databases.  Depending on what type of database you are using, string type might vary, but it tends to be pretty consistant across different databases.  In the down method, it just does exactly the opposite, as if the script has never been run.

On the command line, if you run “rake db:migrate”, your database will be upgraded to the latest version.  In this case, the cars table will be added.  Each migration script will have a 3 digit number in the start of the file name which represents the schema version of the script.  That same version number is also stored in the database you are using.  That is how migration knows which script to run during an upgrade or downgrade.  Using the example above, the file name would look something like the following:

001_create_cars.rb#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/11213&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com

Lets say you are currently on version four but you need to roll back to version one, you can run the following command:

rake db:migration VERSION=1

Migration supports most of the operations you would need to perform on the daily basis.  But if you need to do something it does not support you can always execute DDL in your migration script.

One of the really cool things about using Ruby as a DSL is that you have the power of a real programming language to create your migration scripts. This comes in really handy when you need to create test data.

I only scratched the surface on the stuff I covered on Rails migration.  I would encourage anyone that is interested to read the Rails book.

openSUSE News: Sixth openSUSE.Asia Summit Concludes

 Cache

The openSUSE community concluded its sixth openSUSE.Asia Summit this weekend at the Fakultas Teknik of the Universitas Udayana in Bali, Indonesia.

Bali’s newest tourist attraction, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana status, towered outside the window as participants discussed all things openSUSE and open source.

A number of participants traveled from all over the world to join students from the university. The students volunteered with running the summit and many made their first contributions to open source. Attendees from more than 20 nations attended the summit. Talks at the summit focused on open source technologies, community contributions, healthcare technologies like GNU Health, packaging, using the Open Build Service and much more.

Simon Lee and Dr. Axel Braun from the openSUSE Board provided attendees with a status update about the openSUSE Project and introduced Gerald Pfeifer as the new chairperson for openSUSE. GNOME‘s Executive Director Neil McGovern gave a keynote at the summit; the GNOME.Asia Summit will be next week in East Java, which is the island next to where the openSUSE.Asia Summit took place.

The organizers from the opensuse.id#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/18005&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com community put together a fantastic summit for the participants had several social events to collaborate on topics related to the project and expansion of the project and open source technologies within Asia. The openSUSE.Asia Summit started a tradition at the first openSUSE.Asia Summit of passing along the Summit’s photo album; the organizing team from the previous year passes the Summit’s photo album to the organizers who are completing the current Summit. Max Huang passed the album to Kukuh Syafaat during the ceremonial end of the summit.

That wasn’t the only ceremony. The conference started off with a ceremonial dance and opening remarks from the university’s staff.

Next year’s openSUSE.Asia Summit is planned to take place in Faridabad, India.

Tilen Marc, Miha Stopar, Jan Hartman, Manca Bizjak, Jolanda Modic

Functional encryption is a generalization of public-key encryption in which possessing a secret functional key allows one to learn a function of what the ciphertext is encrypting. This paper introduces the first fully-fledged open source cryptographic libraries for functional encryption. It also presents how functional encryption can be used to build efficient privacy-enhanced machine learning models and it provides an implementation of three prediction services that can be applied on the encrypted data. Finally, the paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the alternative approach for building privacy-enhanced machine learning models by using homomorphic encryption.

Designing and maintaining enterprise networks and the associated hardware is a complex and time consuming task. Network automation tools allow network engineers to codify their workflows and make them repeatable. In this episode Antoine Fourmy describes his work on eNMS and how it can be used to automate enterprise grade networks. He explains how his background in telecom networking led him to build an open source platform for network engineers, how it is architected, and how you can use it for creating your own workflows. This is definitely worth listening to as a way to gain some appreciation for all of the work that goes on behind the scenes to make the internet possible.

Open source software forms much of our digital infrastructure. It, however, contains vulnerabilities which have been exploited, attracted public attention, and caused large financial damages. This article proposes a solution to shortcomings in the current economic situation of open source software development. The main idea is to introduce price signals into the peer production of software. This is achieved through a trading market for futures contracts on the status of software issues.

Microsoft Loves Linux Needs More Work Argues Open Source Leader

Microsoft has increasingly embraced Linux in recent years, enough for Redmond to run under the mantra, “Microsoft Loves Linux”. Of course, the reason for the sea change from hating open source to embracing it is simply good economic movement.

Despite its new-found love for Linux, one expert believes Microsoft has a long way to go to atone for past problems. Specifically, free-software leader Richard Stallman says Microsoft’s top execs previously targeted open source in the past.

Most famous of the Linux attacks was former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who described the platform as a “cancer”. Former Windows chief Jim Allchin said the open source idea was both un-American and a killer of intellectual property.

Amount of item with tax included (gross)?

 Cache

Myclientbase is the predecessor of Fusioninvoice and was also Open Source.
In the invoice itself, you won’t see that really.
It is just to enter a gross price . E.g. I have a „product“ which costs 4.49 per month including tax = 53.88 per year. If I enter the price without tax (3.77 rounded), the price per year is 53.83 including tax.

I have already seen other threads regarding this:

Is this so hard to implement? Because I’m thinking about implementing it myself (though I’m not really a developer). Could you tell me which files I need to change for that?
I would create a new database field called “item_tax_option”, 0 is without tax (default) and 1 is price included tax. Then in the frontend a new checkbox “Tax included”. An if tax included I have several price calculations to change. Would you tell me the files to be changed?

Microsoft wants to make its cloud the platform 'for every workload on the planet,' and one way it's doing that is helping startups win bigger customers (MSFT)

 Cache

Charlotte Yarkoni 2

  • Microsoft launched a program called Microsoft for Startups in February 2018 to teach startups how to sell to larger customers and give them access to Microsoft's customer base.
  • Microsoft sees helping startups as an investment because they can become partners in the future, and startups are also using Microsoft's cloud, Microsoft Azure.
  • Microsoft is also doing more to attract developers in startups like investing in open source software, something that it was previously reluctant to do.
  • Click here for more BI Prime stories.

When Chad Fowler, general manager of startups at Microsoft, initially joined the company through its acquisition of the Berlin-based productivity app startup Wunderlist, he felt that Microsoft was an "unlikely suitor" because it was a "sales-y company" that "didn't really get startups."

"I would describe myself as one of the least likely eventual Microsoft employees," Fowler told Business Insider. "I grew up in the '90s in technology companies, and I was very much on the open source side of the world. Microsoft's perception and resonance with that community is pretty well known historically."

Fowler meant that back in the 1990s, Microsoft often fought with open source, or software that's free for anyone to download and contribute to. Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer even called the popular open source operating system Linux "a cancer."

Fowler says that he still had these misconceptions, even after he joined Microsoft initially, but since then, Microsoft has made a turnaround. Now, he's leading a program called Microsoft for Startups, which was launched in February 2018. It helps startups sell their products to Microsoft's customers and teaches them how to scale up.

"I think of myself as a startup person first and an open source person second, and here I am doing that stuff in the context of Microsoft where I never thought I would actually be, but the company is different now," Fowler said.

The startup program underscores the radical shift at Microsoft in the five years since Satya Nadella took the CEO reins, leaving behind old hangups and propelling the company to a trillion dollar market valuation. For Microsoft, forging close ties with startups represents an important market opportunity as it tries to make headway against Amazon in the booming cloud computing market.

Charlotte Yarkoni, corporate vice president of commerce and ecosystem in the cloud and AI division at Microsoft, says that while startups have talented engineering teams, they often need help selling, so that's where Microsoft is uniquely positioned to help.

Startups on their own may have a harder time getting in front of enterprise customers in fields such as health care or manufacturing, but Microsoft for Startups gives them access to Microsoft's customer base. It also gives startups credits for Microsoft's cloud, Microsoft Azure, making startups likely to pick Azure as their cloud of choice to run their software. As a result, Microsoft sees helping these startups as an investment.

"Startups are important because they do represent a lot of the innovation, whether it's building new workloads or even developing new trends and technologies that are more forefront in terms of business models they're contemplating," Yarkoni told Business Insider.

'Help first, sell last'

It's a win for Microsoft, too. Yarkoni says these startups may end up becoming partners in the future.

"What we really wanted to do is build more of a startup ecosystem that represented a partner ecosystem for us, a budding partner ecosystem," Yarkoni said.

Microsoft also offers these startups credits for its cloud Microsoft Azure and helps them onboard onto it. If these startups sell their product on Microsoft's cloud, it also benefits Microsoft, and Microsoft gets to see "interesting new solutions" running on its cloud, Yarkoni says.

"We aspire for our cloud to be the platform for every workload on the planet," Yarkoni said. "These newer workloads and the innovations they bring are fantastic for us to have on our cloud."

Still, Fowler says helping startups is his top priority. His mission is to "help first, sell last."

Read more: A top VMware exec explains how it avoided getting crushed by Microsoft in its early days — and the lesson startups can learn from it

Yarkoni says that startups who are part of the Microsoft program see an immediate increase in their businesses, with an average deal size "north of six figures."

"We continue to hear from startups that the most valuable thing we can do for them is help them win customers," Yarkoni said.

'These startups today are the big enterprise customers of the future.'

Fowler worked on the Wunderlist team at Microsoft for a while, but he missed the startup world. When he met Yarkoni, she pitched him the idea of leading startup teams and advising founders, which he thought would be "the best of both worlds."

"Startups are small companies usually," Fowler said. "You can think of it as an investment. Not every startup that we work with goes on to become a unicorn and eventually IPO, but we do believe that Microsoft was a startup one day as well. These startups today are the big enterprise customers of the future."

Now, he leads the startup team, helping startups land deals with big companies and guiding them through technological and business expertise that they will need when selling to enterprise customers. The team is staffed with people who have gone through the pains of growing startups, such as having to completely rewrite their technology as the company grows.

Fowler recalls that at Wunderlist, when a large customer contacted it to buy a large license, the team had no idea how to address things like disaster recovery and data privacy standards. He recalls that when Wunderlist was first building a sales team, the team "had no idea what we were doing."

"We hired the wrong sorts of people," Fowler said. "We were doing the wrong processes, all kinds of classic mistakes. What we do at the Microsoft for Startups program is become that trusted adviser that helps startups through that time."

Yarkoni says Microsoft plans to continue its investment in this program, including in its presence around the world and also in female founders. She says the number of startups coming into the program is growing.

"Thes startup ecosystem is a great representation of meeting these communities where they are. It's very much the cornerstone of our startup philosophy," Yarkoni said. "Helping Microsoft get more engaged in the community is really something we're quite proud of, and we obviously want to share our journey as we go."

Video Reuse Detector - CADEAH project

 Cache

The project “European History Reloaded: Circulation and Appropriation of Digital Audiovisual Heritage” (CADEAH)—funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme—will shed light on how online users engage with Europe’s audiovisual heritage online. The project is a follow up on the EUscreen projects, and particularly looks at online circulation and appropriation of audiovisual heritage via the usage of algorithmic tracking and tracing technologies. The project brings together scholars and developers from Utrecht University, the Institute of Contemporary History (Czech Republic) and the digital humanities hub, Humlab at Umeå University—and also includes the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision as a cooperation partner. From a technical perspective CADEAH will use (and in a way reverse engineer) forensic video fingerprinting techniques. Within the media content industry video fingerprints are used to track copyrighted video material. But whereas the industry seeks to police and control piracy, CADEAH will use similar digital methods to analyse, research and discuss the cultural dynamics around re-use and remix of audiovisual heritage and archival footage. Building on the open source video fingerprinting technology Videorooter, CADEAH will develop an up-to-date and cutting edge system—the Video Reuse Detector—enabling users to upload a specific video to a system which will match the video against a set of fingerprints known to the same system. Implemented in Python and using the OpenCV machine learning framework, the Video Reuse Detector will compute a video fingerprint as a sequences of images hashes, store those fingerprints and associated metadata (title, source, thumbnails, frames etcetera) in a fingerprint database, and match a fingerprint or image hash against the current set of fingerprints in the database. In a collaboration with the Internet Archive, videos from the current Trump Archive— which collects TV news shows containing debates, speeches, rallies, and other broadcasts related to Donald Trump, before and during his presidency—will serve as a test case for the video reuse detector system currently being developed at Humlab. The system will have a capacity to compute and store fingerprints for several videos (or images) in an offline batch process, a feature that will enable easy load of reference video collections to be used in future matching. The open source system will also have an online (web) capacity to accept and match a video (or image) against the current set of fingerprints stored in the database, a feature that will be available as a web service in the form of a user interface with drag and drop capabilities for potential video and image matching. The Video Reuse Detector will hence address the current shortcomings of the Videorooter technology, foremost regarding the way in which hash sequences are generated but also avoiding the fixation to one specific hashing algorithm.

Deutsche Bank analysts say the arrival of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian 'changed everything' in the fight with Amazon Web Services (GOOG, GOOGL)

 Cache

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian at Google Cloud Next 2019

  • Analysts were skeptical for many years of Google Cloud being able to catch up to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, but Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian is spearheading several changes.
  • Analysts point out that Google Cloud made several new leadership hires this year, which they see as costly, but worth the investment if it translates to winning bigger customers.
  • Google Cloud is poised to go from an $8 billion cloud business today to nearly $17 billion in revenue in 2021, Deutsche Bank research analyst Lloyd Walmsley wrote in a note for clients.
  • Google Cloud still doesn't have as many deals with large enterprises, but these companies are starting to at least consider Google Cloud, analysts say.
  • Google Cloud also has an advantage because it's known for being friendly with developers, who are becoming more influential in picking what cloud to use, analysts say.
  • Click here for more BI Prime stories.

For years, analysts were skeptical that Google Cloud could ever catch up to its rivals Amazon Web Services and Microsoft — the first- and second-place cloud providers, respectively.

Karl Keirstead, managing director at Deutsche Bank, tells Business Insider that he thought Google Cloud would remain a "distant third," But the arrival of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian who came from Oracle, "changed everything," he said.

For one thing, Kurian has been making several new leadership hires at Google Cloud, which Keirstead calls "one of the most impressive bursts of hiring that we've ever seen from a large tech firm." What's more, even though Google Cloud hasn't scored many "mega-deal wins" yet he says that large companies are increasingly viewing it as a viable option.

"He's built a fantastic leadership team, essentially pulling talent from other tech organizations that also serve the large enterprise market," Keirstead told Business Insider.

The reason for the earlier skepticism didn't have much to do with Google Cloud itself.

"Having been built by Google, it's world class," Keirstead said. "Google has never built up an enterprise sales marketing branding and presence that can hold a candle to Microsoft. Whereas Amazon started relatively early and also didn't have as much of an enterprise presence, they just had longer to build it out."

In the bigger picture, Google Cloud is making the right investments in hiring and infrastructure – and it's poised to go from an $8 billion cloud business today to nearly $17 billion in revenue in 2021, Deutsche Bank research analyst Lloyd Walmsley wrote in a note for clients.

"It's money well spent, and I think they will be able to scale to margins that look more to AWS in the next three to five years," Walmsley told Business Insider. "We don't think, looking three years from now, they'll get to AWS on the same scale, but we think they can get to attractive margins on a three to five year basis."

New hires

Under Kurian, Google Cloud plans to triple its salesforce in a move seemingly taken from his former employer Oracle. To help manage all that growth, Google Cloud has made some key hires.

Keirstead highlights says former SAP exec Robert Enslin, president of global customer operations, is a key hire. Others include VP and Head of Platform Amit Zavery from Oracle, EMEA President Chris Ciauri from Salesforce, Engineering VP Sunil Potti from Nutanix, and Engineering VP Yanbing Li from VMware.

Those hires are a good start, say the Deutsche Bank analysts: It's not cheap to attract hires of that caliber, they say, but it's a worthy investment in helping signal to would-be customers how serious Google Cloud is about winning their business. However, the analysts warn, that doesn't automatically translate into winning those big deals.

Read more: Here are 12 of the most important executives leading Google Cloud as it takes on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure

The 'larger deal wins are likely to come'

Keirstead sees rising interest from Fortune 500 companies, making him "confident that the larger deal wins are likely to come."

Keirstead says he hasn't heard about many Fortune 500 companies fully embracing Google Cloud, but winning large deals against AWS or Microsoft will take time. Some of Google Cloud's recent major customer wins include HSBC, Mayo Clinic, Macy's, and KeyBank.

Keirstead said that he recently attended a Google Cloud event in New York City with mostly financial services and banks in attendance. He says that while it's true that most of them weren't Google Cloud customers, there's something to be said for the fact that these old-school institutions were at least taking it under serious consideration.

"They tend to be cautious buyers that move relatively slowly," Keirstead said. "This will be one of the last big markets that Google Cloud will end up going after. We took some comfort in the fact that some very large banks were there, evaluating Google Cloud."

Another aspect Google Cloud will have to fix is cultural. While Google has traditionally focused on the technology above all else, Walmsley said, it will have to learn how to take customers' concerns more seriously and act on them.

"That's something culturally that may still encumber them," Walmsley said.

'Currying favor' with developers

Under the legacy IT model, it was the CIO or CTO who made major technology decisions, like picking which cloud to use. However, as evidenced by Microsoft's purchase of GitHub, cloud providers are becoming aware that it's increasingly developers who drive IT spending.

He says in this sense, Google has an advantage because it's active in open source, the community of developers who write software that's free for anyone to use and download. Google engineers often contribute code to popular projects — the popular cloud project Kubernetes was even created at Google

In comparison, while Amazon's cloud is known as being developer friendly, it has a reputation for using open source code without giving anything back, Keirstead says. He says that, anecdotally, smaller startups are increasingly looking at building on Google Cloud rather than AWS, which he takes as a reflection of Google's strength in open source.

"Currying favor with and providing good functional software to the developer community is fairly essential and becoming a big strategy for the cloud providers," Keirstead said.

With developers on Google Cloud's side, Keirstead says what's left is to grow its sales.

"If they can scale up the leadership team and close the sales gap with Microsoft and Amazon, I think that's all they need to have a legitimate market share in that space," Keirstead said.

Kornia: an Open Source Differentiable Computer Vision Library for PyTorch. (arXiv:1910.02190v1 [cs.CV])

 Cache

Authors: Edgar Riba, Dmytro Mishkin, Daniel Ponsa, Ethan Rublee, Gary Bradski

This work presents Kornia -- an open source computer vision library which consists of a set of differentiable routines and modules to solve generic computer vision problems. At its core, the package uses PyTorch as its main backend both for efficiency and to take advantage of the reverse-mode auto-differentiation to define and compute the gradient of complex functions. Inspired by OpenCV, Kornia is composed of a set of modules containing operators that can be inserted inside neural networks to train models to perform image transformations, camera calibration, epipolar geometry, and low level image processing techniques such as filtering and edge detection that operate directly on high dimensional tensor representations. Examples of classical vision problems implemented using our framework are also provided including a benchmark comparing to existing vision libraries.

Comment on How to Deliver an Amazon Experience to Your Greenhouse Customers by kyplantpro

 Cache
TMS software is only part of the solution! Folks the handwriting is now on the wall. One day soon, Amazon will be in the Local Garden Center Business! IGC's need to get on board with Local Ecommerce NOW! BEFORE Amazon gets there! Think about it, The IGC’s already have lost major business to the Big Box stores. Why? Because the consumer is so busy, they don’t want to have to make multiple trips (to the grocery store, the hardware store, and the garden center for example) Enter the Box store. Now the consumer can go to just one store (Menards for example) and purchase all of those items in one place, with one trip. But now the box stores and all bricks and mortar companies are having trouble competing with a new competitor…AMAZON! Why? The consumer now doesn’t have to make a trip… just a click! Consider this. Many of the items in an IGC do not ship well. Customers have trouble getting these items home undamaged. Just getting these items home can be an issue (having to borrow or ask a neighbor or family member to take their pickup truck to the IGC to pick up their purchase.) What if instead, they could go on-line or to the IGC and decide what they want and then go home and place the order and the order shows up in 24 hours? The IGC can increase the size of their average order size as customer order sizes now are not defined by how big a vehicle or how big a shopping cart they push to get their purchases home. This will drive the rest of the industry to pick up their pace of supplying Garden Retailers. The fact of the matter is Ecommerce (specifically Local Ecommerce- where an IGC only needs one local store location but can ship over a 3 to 5 county area.) is a way to increase sales and reduce costs. It is far cheaper to have one main store that ships over a wide area than it is to open multiple locations and pay for extra inventory, staffing and real estate (or leasing costs). TMS software and modern Cloud Based Accounting Packages like Open Pro will be more important than ever in the future. We use Open Pro ( www.openpro.com#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/135785&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com ) as our accounting software. It is open source (comes with the source code) and is about 1/3 the price of some of its major software competitors. It is a SaaS (Software as a Service) and includes MRP (Manufacturer's Resource Planning), ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), Warehouse Distribution and Full Accounting. Including: Job Costing, Payroll, Time Keeping (including IOS and android app) POS (Point of Sale) (soon to be released Mobile POS, Fixed Assets, General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Sales Order, Inventory, Purchase Order, Bank Reconciliation, Ecommerce, Document Imaging and Workflow management and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) (soon to be released Mobile CRM App). Our Business is in Louisville, KY. But as I am writing this today, I am on vacation in Orlando, Fl. Yet I am using our Accounting system in my Time Share Resort condo now! (working vacation LOL!). Open Pro runs in a web browser, so you can use your favorite flavor of computer. And you can have multiple tabs in your web browser open running different modules of Open Pro simultaneously. Open Pro is written in PHP (the language of the internet) and uses a SQL backend database just like your website. Because of this, it is really easy to pass data from your web site or other web-based apps to Open Pro modules like CRM. For example, we have a "Get a Quote" link on our web site. When a customer submits their quote request, the request and customer data show up as a new lead automatically in CRM! We also get Leads from Home Adviser for our Landscape Division and those leads show up automatically in our CRM system. Customer Appointments made in our CRM system automatically show up in our G-Suite Google Calendar. IT systems are more important than ever. New major competition is entering our industry (and have already entered our industry - The Big Box stores) and are already using this technology. To compete our industry needs to get on board with these technologies! We hope to be implementing Local Ecommerce (with same day delivery free in (24 hours of the order) in a year or so for our Garden Center Division) It is far cheaper to have one Garden Center and service a much wider area using Ecommerce. We plan to finance our free shipping by sending trained Horticulturalists rather than delivery drivers. We want our drivers to look for sales opportunities at our customer's house when we make the delivery. The next day when the customer receives an email from our CRM system thanking them for their order we would say "While we were making your delivery we noticed “_ _ _” (with pictures) If you would like a quote please respond to this email. This identifies potential problems (and sales opportunities) before the customer or the competition has a clue (if we close one out of ten of those sales opportunities, we have financed our delivery.) We use CRM as loyalty tool to keep our customer’s loyal to our brand. How? CRM systems have a feature called triggers. Let’s look at an example. Evergreens especially arborvitaes have a pest that feeds on them in the May and June time frame-bag worms. The bag worms hatch out around the 10th of May here in Louisville. They are little green worms that are well camouflaged with the foliage of the Arborvitae’s. Consumers frequently are not even aware that they have a problem until the see the top defoliated out of one of the Arbs and the bag worms are building their cocoons in Late June. (by then it is to late to spray). With CRM we can draft an email that has pictures and/or videos of what the bag worms will look like when they hatch out and show customers’ how to scout for them. We can include links to our ecommerce site to purchase the insecticide we recommend spraying the bag worms with and a link to our Landscape Maintenance division if the customer would prefer us to eradicate the worms for them. We would schedule this email (trigger) to be sent out on May 5th the week before the bagworms hatch out. On May 5th CRM would then go out and search the purchase history of all our customers (in Point of Sale) and if they purchased a plant that was susceptible to infestation (one plant or multiple plants) that customer would receive only one email notification. Successful Landscaping is about performing necessary maintenance in a TIMELY window. Many customers are so busy they may forget to check their plants or may not even know to check them. Pretty soon customers’ will begin to realize that if they purchase their products from the competition, they won’t receive our notifications and they will not be as successful in maintaining their yard. And they will begin to think twice about making those purchases from someone else. Formal Metaethics and Metasemantics for AI Alignment

A Brief Introduction to MetaEthical.AI

tl;dr: AIXI for Friendliness

[Crossposted from my new blog.]

Abstract: We construct a fully technical ethical goal function for AI by directly tackling the philosophical problems of metaethics and mental content. To simplify our reduction of these philosophical challenges into “merely” engineering ones, we suppose that unlimited computation and a complete low-level causal model of the world and the adult human brains in it are available.

Given such a model, the AI attributes beliefs and values to a brain in two stages. First, it identifies the syntax of a brain’s mental content by selecting a decision algorithm which is i) isomorphic to the brain’s causal processes and ii) best compresses its behavior while iii) maximizing charity. The semantics of that content then consists first in sense data that primitively refer to their own occurrence and then in logical and causal structural combinations of such content.

The resulting decision algorithm can capture how we decide what to do, but it can also identify the ethical factors that we seek to determine when we decide what to value or even how to decide. Unfolding the implications of those factors, we arrive at what we should do. All together, this allows us to imbue the AI with the necessary concepts to determine and do what we should program it to do.

Motivation

Researchers like Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nick Bostrom, among others, have argued for the urgent need to develop a rigorous framework for ensuring that smarter-than-human intelligence will be beneficial for humanity. I think of them and the community around their respective nonprofits, the Machine Intelligence Research Institute and the Oxford Future of Humanity Institute, as tending to share a cluster of views, including the following:

  • We should have a wide probability distribution over when human-level AI will be developed. If we go by expert predictions, most predict it will arrive within this century. A cautionary approach should prepare for even more rapid timelines.
  • Once AI that is at least as intelligent as its human creators has been developed, there is a positive feedback loop in which it can take over the task of improving its own intelligence, quickly resulting in a superintelligence vastly greater than that of humans.
  • A silicon-based intelligence will have many natural advantages that would further compound this process, e.g. ease of faithful replication, readily available additional hardware, already million-fold increase in serial computational speed relative to biological neurons, long-term exponential Moore’s law trend as well as realistic plans and models for its continuation.
  • Virtually any sufficiently advanced intelligence will converge upon certain instrumental goals to persist and acquire more resources and power, if only to better serve whatever intrinsic goals it may have.
  • There is no automatic guarantee that greater intelligence coincides with better ethics. There is also tremendous economic incentive to develop ever smarter AI but not necessarily to make it safer or beneficial in the long run. If anything, each private party’s incentive may be to cut corners on safety to get to market quicker.
  • Many naive approaches to aligning AI with our values fail. Human values have a great deal of hidden complexity and missing just one dimension can lead to very undesirable outcomes. Therefore, a metaethical approach seems to be more promising than hoping to capture all ethical principles at the object level.

My own inquiry into metaethics began long before these ideas were written. In fact, I had even reached a point where I felt I could explain my reductionist metaethics to other philosophers. But having followed the development of the AI safety literature with great interest, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and urgency. It seemed we’ll need to not only solve perennial philosophical problems but do so with sufficient precision to make a computer understand them. What is more, it looked like we were in a race to accomplish it all before the arguably exponential advancement in AI crossed some unknown threshold.

Having mentioned all this, I will not be arguing for the above claims here. And while this forms my primary motivation, I actually don’t think agreement with any of them is necessary to appreciate the metaethics and metasemantics I develop here. I have spent enough time in academic philosophy to appreciate such theories in the theoretical spirit in which they have often been developed. Formulating them in code as I have done could be seen as just a notational variant to the more conventional expression of certain rigorous philosophical theories in mathematical logic. Doing so helps us avoid misleading vagueness and ambiguity and ensures maximal precision in our thinking and communicating, all of which can be appreciated without regard to any practical applications.

Still, I hope many of you have already or will soon come to appreciate some of the backdrop of this MIRIFHI cluster of views. It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention. It has certainly driven me to be more ambitious and aim for higher precision than I thought possible in philosophy. To have any hope of success, I realized I would need to delve into mathematics and computer science and bridge the conceptual divide. In doing so, I was excited to discover new inspiration and draw connections I doubt I would have made otherwise. And taking on an engineering mindset, I found myself pruning search trees that initially sounded appealing but turned out not to be fruitful, while finding new appreciation for theories that shed new light and enabled further technical progress.

While many areas of philosophy can benefit from a more technical mindset, I think conversely many in computer science or other mathematical fields may be too eager to apply whatever technical tools they may currently have at their disposal without pausing to ponder whether a problem is still at a philosophical stage in which important conceptual advancements must first take place. Perhaps these advancements have even been made already in academic philosophy but they are not aware of them, while the philosophers in turn are not aware of how to formalize them.

What follows is a mixture of original contributions to philosophical problems, some standard or not-so-standard components borrowed from across computer science and philosophy, and novel ways of weaving them all together. Throughout it all, I have tried my best to balance faithfulness to the subtleties of philosophical reality, the rigor of formalizing these theories, the urgency of making and communicating this progress, and the practicalities of engineering an initial prototype of a wildly ambitious project.

While I don’t necessarily trust our civilization to get philosophy right, I think it is quite good at making progress on well-defined technical problems. I hope I have largely succeeded in turning the philosophical problems of getting an AI to understand and share our values into an engineering problem — and hopefully one we can solve in time.

See the open source code and commentary at www.metaethical.ai#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/136272&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com

An Apology

In an ideal world, I would have accomplished the above while explaining and justifying each philosophical step up to the standards of contemporary analytic philosophy and relating them to the current and historical literature. Moreover, on the technical side, the mathematical formulas would be written and typeset in beautiful LaTeX with ample diagrams and gentle tutorials.

Or you know, I could have at least written it in English. Instead, I chose to write it in a little known programming language called setlX (although I’ve since interspersed the code with considerable philosophical comments). My choice at the time and perhaps even now, was on the one hand, to struggle with writing math with limited experience or institutional support. Or on the other hand, I could leverage my long experience and intuition with programming to write essentially the same content in a language with clear semantics in set theory — the classic lingua franca of mathematics. On top of that, I’d have a compiler to check for bugs and an interactive console serving as a concrete interface by which to manipulate very abstract objects and functions.

In further defense of setlX, I find it to be a very elegant and powerful language. Its relatively few primitives are sufficient to concisely construct complex data and algorithms while being small enough to pick up fairly quickly if you have some experience with programming, mathematics or logic. Not surprisingly, writing in it feels like you’re programming close to the mathematical essence.

Despite its initial unfamiliarity, I hope you will give setlX, my code and my commentary a chance. Even if you are not technically inclined, I expect that with a little patience, a synopsis can be gleaned from the comments — the most important of which I’ve gathered into a Key Concepts outline beside the code. Other than that, I have not imposed much of an ordering but tried to enable a more free exploration by hyperlinking procedure calls to that procedure’s definition, which often has at least a short explanatory comment.

Where I have left important explanations and justifications sparse, I’ve tried to include links to those of others who have likely done a better job than I would have. I wish I could have done more but I have mainly been optimizing for solving the problem rather than communicating the solution.

Open Source Language Detection

 Cache

No, not a typo. OSDL is something else. I'm interested in OSLD. I've used Language::Guess to detect languages in arbitrary text with Perl, it works pretty well. But how are folks solving the problem in Java?

It looks like Oracle has language detection as part of their "Globalization Development Kit" ... but what about open source? Sadly, the Nutch Language Identifier Plugin only supports European languages, no CJK. What are the other options?

Baking Components With Velocity

 Cache
For years I've advocated that heavyweight content generation should be moved out of the CMS and that publishing systems should do most their work asynchronously.

Recently, I've been generating Velocity components that should be evaluated at request-time but have at least some of the values they must work with calculated asynchronously when the component is generated. Here's an example that involves localizable content:

<div  class="fubars">
$text.get#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138861&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com("fubars.per.seco#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138861&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.comnd", [ $fubarRate ])
</div>
So let's say the ResourceBundle has a key in it for fubars.per.seco#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138861&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.comnd like so
fubars.per.seco#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138861&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.comnd=Number of Fubars Per Second: {0}
If all of the calculation is done at request time, MessageTool would do its thing and this would Just Work. However, if $fubarRate is part of a heavier weight calculation that is done offline, we have to set it. So this is where I use Velocity to generate Velocity code:
  #set($fr = '#set($fubarRate = ')
  #set($fr = "${fr} $measurement.fuba#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138861&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.comrRate)")
  $fr
Notice the use of single quotes and double quotes to get the right combination of literal and interpolated evaluation. If my measurement object has a fubarRate property set to 42 then the last line simply outputs
 #set($fubarRate = 42)
and later, after the generated component gets its request time evaluation, the display is rendered as
<div class="fubars">
Number of Fubars Per Second: 42
</div>

Sure, I could generate my components with the web tier's ResourceBundle to get messages evaluated async as well. This would be 100% baking instead of 90% but it would be bad in other ways:

  • It would create a cross dependency between the offline content generation framework and the web code. The ResourceBundle works fine on the web tier, I say leave it there.
  • I would have to create another ResourceBundle evaluator for Velocity; MessageTool hooks into struts' plumbing for handling different Locale's, HttpServletRequest's and other container dependencies. Porting it to work outside of the web context seems like a waste of time; let the web tier be the web tier

This separation of baking versus frying ain't new. I advocated it a long time ago in a talk at the O'Reilly Open Source Conference. I was hot on mod_perl and HTML::Mason back then (and, given a Perl environment, I still like them ...but#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138861&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com I'd prefer a Java web application environment for i18n hands down), however the same basic ideas hold water using Velocity. At the time, application server misuse was in vogue and hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars were being poured into "Enterprise Content Management" systems that coupled the CMS functions with those of publishing and request handling. Count that as millions of dollars squandered. There are still people struggling with the legacy of slow and stupid systems that can't be replaced because they spent too much money on it already (yea, what'd Forrest Gump say about stupid?). A few years later, when Aaron Swartz wrote about baking content he was insistent that he didn't care about performance, which is cool. The other benefits of baking that he mentions are perfectly valid. In fact, the publishing system at Salon.com#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138861&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com distributes baked goods (HTML::Mason components generated with HTML::Mason components) to the web servers akin to Aaron's call to have something you can just do filesystem operations on. However, that's just the beginning. My maxim is that things that can scale independently should. The users of Bricolage, MovableType and other CMS and blog platforms that separate the management of editorial data, the publish cycle and content serving are enjoying that benefit right now.

memcached in a service oriented functionality ecosystem

 Cache
Among my efforts over recent months have been those focused on decoupling. Technorati has a very high update rate as it taps the ping streams, fetches update contents, analyzes links and keyword indexes the substance of posts in the blogsphere. Such a system doesn't work well when components are closely coupled; the availability of the whole system is subject to the whim of the system's weakest links. Often, weaknesses are combinatorial; the weakness of the whole is greater than the weakness of the parts. That's what I'm focused on undoing. Fixing weaknesses in the components is important but decoupling them first is more so.

When folks say "service oriented architecture" it still cannotes monolithicism to me. An architecture implies a level of structure definition that sounds rigid; can you re-pour that foundation to adapt redrawn plans? Software development agility and loose coupling should reinforce each other. I prefer to think of architectures and ecosystems. A service oriented functionality ecosystem supplies application functionality as a suite of services. Supporting requirements (as opposed to the core business requirements) such security, logging, persistence, redundancy and caching are each handled independently; they in turn may be provisioned as services that higher level services rely on. This is part of the evolution under way at Technorati; some of the changes are evident in Dave's recent posts but some are just revisions that we're quietly rolling out.

Queues and distributed memory caches are natural elements of a such an environment. In the December issue of Linux Journal, Technorati's use of open source building blocks such as memcached is discussed by Doc Searls.

This is the game:
A memcached server (or a set of servers) can be accessed over the network to store things in a table kept in RAM. When storing things, you can specify a maximum age for the cache entry -- if you go back to fetch it and the elapsed time since it was stored exceeds that age, it gets treated as a cache miss.

Storing things in memcached with the timeout parameter and invalidating cache entries works as long as you have consistent mechanism for calculating the key. If internally you're managing "stories" and each one has an "id" attribute that is unique (a primary key), that's a good candidate to store them with. So for instance putting memcache inside a content management system (CMS) "content service" seems natural. In babytalk code:

  public Story fetchStory(int storyId) {
      Story story = memc.get#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138872&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com(storyId);
      if (story == null) // perhaps more rigorous validation of the fetched object
          return story;
      story = StoryDB.find#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138872&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.comById(storyId);
      memc.put#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138872&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com(storyId, story, AGE);
      return(story);
  }

If it's difficult to determine whether something is new or an update because it doesn't have an id and uniqueness is determined by some combination of attributes, then the lookup cycle can be helped by caching with composite keys. It gets a little more complicated:
  public Story fetchStory(Map atts) {
      // encapulate whatever attributes uniquely identify a thing
      CacheKey key = new CacheKey(attrs);
      Story story = memc.get#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138872&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com(key);
      if (story == null)
          return story;
      story = StoryDB.find#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138872&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.comByAttrs(attrs);
      memc.put#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/138872&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com(key, story, AGE);
      return(story);
  }

We're in the process of evolving Technorati's infrastructure to one that is loosely coupled, redundant and robust. Our use of memcached is one of the enabling technologies of that evolution.
