Jeremy and Matt are back to recap a Week 6 set of games that featured four conference and two non-conference games. The league games saw Boise State, despite some issues, take care of UNLV, San Diego State's defense suffocate Colorado State and San Jose State get its third win of the year of New Mexico. The duo discuss Utah State playing good defense and how the Aggies struggle in that regard and what coaches have the chance of not returning next year.

Timbers Step Up, Qualify for Postseason in Style

by Abe Asher
Craig Mitchelldyer/Portland Timbers
Heading into the decisive final day of the MLS regular season, there were plenty of bad omens for a struggling Portland Timbers team in need of a result to qualify for the playoffs.

Brian Fernandez was suspended. Diego Valeri was out with a lingering calf injury. And the San Jose Earthquakes were coming into Providence Park with everything to play for — in need of a win to keep their own season alive.

This time, though, after a month of of ugly soccer and bad breaks and disappointing results, the Timbers got the job done and did it with room to spare.

Goals from Larrys Mabiala, Dairon Asprilla, and Sebastian Blanco were more than enough to lift the Timbers to their first win in six games on a lovely fall afternoon, jump into sixth place in the Western Conference, and bring the curtain down on San Jose's remarkable season.

All of the sudden, after all they endured this fall, the Timbers can look forward to a third-straight playoff appearance that will begin with a game against Real Salt Lake — a team that they've already beaten twice this year, at a venue that they've won at in both of their previous visits under Giovani Savarese.

Things are looking up. Facing the biggest test of their season, the Timbers had the right gameplan and executed it to near-perfection.

With San Jose man-marking in the ubiquitous system installed by their Argentinian manager Matias Almeyda, Savarese — in a move reminiscent of Portland's surge last fall — set his team up to defend deep and hit the 'Quakes on the break.

The early returns were positive. The Timbers nearly took the lead after a quarter of an hour when a Blanco corner hit Chris Wondolowski and forced San Jose goalkeeper Daniel Vega into a sprawling save, and generally were contesting the game on their terms.

The Timbers were getting traction going forward, and while the Earthquakes had plenty of the ball — they'd finish with 61 percent possession and complete nearly 200 more passes than the Timbers did — they were completely unable to break down the Timbers' defensive lines.

A slaloming, one-man run aside, Jorge Villafaña held the dangerous Cristian Espinoza was held in check. Vako completed only four passes during the entirety of the half on the opposite flank, Wondolowski just two from his position at center forward.

The Timbers' attack was limited somewhat with Asprilla and Andy Polo playing on the wings, but with Ebobisse dealing up top and Blanco slashing through the middle, it had a balance that had often been missing over the last several months.

It was on a set piece, though, that the Timbers would strike first.

Just before the half hour mark, Asprilla settled a recycled corner on the edge of the penalty area and slipped a ball wide left for an onrushing Villafaña, who whipped a pass across the face of goal that Mabiala, who had stayed in the box after the initial clearance, stuck out his trailing leg and dragged in.

Just like that, San Jose was in serious trouble — in need of multiple goals, with a third of the game gone, having failed to create a single significant chance yet. But they still had Wondolowski, and, with him, the ability to conjure a goal from thin air.

With halftime closing in and the score 1-0, that's exactly with they did. Off of a pre-planned corner routine, Espinoza hit a cross to the near post and the 36-year-old record MLS goalscorer beat everyone to the ball and flicked a diving header off of the ground, off of the underside of the crossbar, and in to tie the game.
Craig Mitchelldyer/Portland Timbers
It was vintage Wondolowski — a purely instinctual, fearless finish, his record eleventh goal against Portland, a one of the most important of his season.

As the second half began, with Dallas running riot over Sporting Kansas City, everything was on the table. One of these teams was going to be playing its final 45 minutes of the season, one was going to move on.

Enter, not for the first time and not ever unremarkably, Asprilla. Handed his first start in a month ahead of Marvin Loría, the Colombian with a penchant for scoring the most timely of goals repaid Savarese's faith with another memorable contribution.

Just before the hour mark, Asprilla drifted inside to pick up a cross-field pass from Ebobisse, cut past Florien Jungwirth with an excellent first touch, and went barreling through on goal. Vega stopped his first shot, but the rebound squibbed underneath him — and Asprilla, at the second time of asking, tucked it in.

Whatever his past, for a player who has had the most abject of seasons, this was a stunning moment: a truly excellent goal, all of his own making, thanks to the kind of decisive turn of pace that you almost never see him make when he receives the ball.

At this time of the year, though, there's no rhyme or reason when it comes to Asprilla. He's just a different player.

Almeyda emptied his bench almost immediately the goal, making all three of his substitutions and trying to push his team — again in search of two goals, now with just 30 minutes left to play — into a more overtly attacking posture.

In the process, which included removing a defensive midfielder, the 'Quakes opened themselves up on the counter. The Timbers had several chance to ice the game in the following minutes, with Ebobisse and Cristhian Paredes coming closest, but it'd take a special moment from Blanco to make the result secure.

With a quarter of an hour to play, and Valeri off the field, it was the diminutive Argentine who stepped to a free kick from 25 yards away and fired it into the top corner.

No player on the field more deserved to score. The Timbers were never worse over the last month than when Blanco was out of the lineup, and on a day when they were missing their two most high profile attackers, he brought the heat in every phase of the game.

With that, San Jose was buried. They finished the season having lost six straight, a sour end to an otherwise triumphant first MLS campaign for Almeyda.

The Timbers' run-in wasn't much prettier. But Savarese, who has never missed the postseason as a manager, was understandably pleased with his team's perseverance. They didn't throw in the towel, and they made it to the finish line with their season intact.

"It has been a very difficult season in so many ways," Savarese said after the game. "So that’s why I think even in this moment that we have been able to make the playoffs, I’m more proud than ever for all the guys we have on the team.”

The slate is clean. Salt Lake away, a team the Timbers know they can beat, and then the specter of another playoff meeting with Seattle. The possibilities, just as they should at this time of the year, abound.
Craig Mitchelldyer/Portland Timbers

The 6 best upcoming VR games from Oculus Connect 6

There was thunderous applause at Oculus Connect 6 when Mark Zuckerberg took to the stage for his keynote speech and announced the Oculus Link. This exciting update for the Oculus Quest launches in November and is set to be a game-changer for Facebook's portable VR headset as it'll allow Quest owners to play PC VR games on their headset.

I was right there in the audience when this happened and as soon as the doors to the main hall opened, I rushed inside to try the Link out for myself. The Link wasn't the only thing I played however, I also went hands-on with as many upcoming VR games as possible and I've got to say, the future for VR is looking bright!

In this week's Ian's VR Corner, which you can watch below, I chat about my time in San Jose and give you my first impressions of the 6 best Oculus games that I played at the show. Not only that, but I also chat about my impressions of OC6 as a whole, show you some behind the scenes footage of the show floor and let you know exactly what I thought about my hands-on time with the Oculus Link.

Vela sets scoring record to wrap up MLS regular season in style

Los Angeles FC forward Carlos Vela's hattrick against Colorado set an MLS record.

Carlos Vela scored a hat trick to set the MLS single-season goal scoring record as Los Angeles FC eliminated the Colorado Rapids from postseason contention with a 3-1 victory on Sunday. Vela's three goals gave him 34 for the season, earning the Mexico international the record and snapping a tie with Atlanta United's Josef Martinez, who set the previous mark with 31 last season. Vela, who recorded his seventh multi-goal game of the season, finished four goals ahead of runner-up Zlatan Ibrahimovic who topped out at 30 goals. Vela’s only other MLS hat trick came on March 30 at San Jose. LAFC also set a record for points in a season with a 72, breaking the mark of 71 set by the New York Red Bulls last season. The records didn't stop there as they scored an impressive 85 goals this season. LAFC already had clinched the Supporter's Shield and a first-round bye in the MLS Cup playoffs. They open the playoffs on October 23 or 24 against the winner of the first-round matchup between Minnesota United FC and Ibrahimovic's LA Galaxy. Ibrahimovic didn't give up the scoring race without a fight. He scored his 30th in the ninth minute of a 4-2 loss to the Houston Dynamo on Sunday. The defeat...

California Bans Distributing "Deepfakes" Before Elections

The rush is on to fight so-called “deepfakes”—videos and audio altered to make a person falsely appear to say something that they did not. California has passed a ban that makes it illegal to share such videos within two months before an election.

Analysts have said that deepfakes will be used as political weapons ahead of next year’s elections.

“It’s hard enough to be informed, to make wise decisions about candidates and political issues,” said social media expert and San Jose State Communications Professor Dr. Matt Cabot. “But with deepfake technology it makes it vastly more complicated.”

The new law targets people distributing altered video and audio to injure the candidate’s reputation or sway voters.

The candidate can seek damages if they can prove it was shared with malice up to 60 days before an election.

“I think consumers need to be more careful about what they post or retweet,” Cabot said. “Be slow to believe. Is it plausible? Did it come from a trusted news source? Did it come from two trusted news sources?”

“In the face of total inaction at the federal level, California must step up to protect our more than 20 million voters,” said State Assemblyman Marc Berman, the bill’s sponsor. “AB 730 will help deter nefarious deepfakes by holding accountable the bad actors who intentionally attempt to injure a candidate’s reputation or deceive voters into believing a candidate said or did something they never said or did.”

There are critics of the ban. The ACLU wrote a letter to Gov. Newsom urging him to veto the bill this week.

“Despite the author’s good intentions, this bill will not solve the problem of deceptive political videos,” it stated. “It will only result in voter confusion, malicious litigation and repression of free speech.”

With presidential primaries just months away, Cabot disagrees.

“The stakes are too high,” he said. “Democracy rests on citizens being informed, and that isn’t free speech. It’s fake speech.”

Airbus unit Voom said it would begin on-demand, per-seat helicopter service in the San Francisco Bay Area.
September 26, 2019, 3:34 PM

Airbus unit Voom will expand its per-seat, on-demand helicopter service to the U.S. beginning at the San Francisco Bay Area airports—Napa, Oakland, Palo Alto, Hayward, San Francisco, and San Jose—the company said on Thursday. Voom said it will also offer full-helicopter charters to additional area airports, including Half Moon Bay, Monterey, Livermore, and Sacramento. Customers can book flights via the Voom app or online up to one hour before departure and check-in at the departure helipad 15 minutes before boarding time.

Based on Airbus’s aviation expertise and our proven success offering our helicopter service in Brazil and Mexico, Voom is uniquely positioned to lead the transformation of air travel in the world’s most congested cities,” said Voom CEO Clément Monnet.

Voom connects passengers with certified and vetted helicopter operators in the Voom network and is not an operator. Voom said it is also launching “Voom for Business,” which features a specialized dashboard that is designed to simplify billing and booking under one account for employees and by other team members.

Voom launched its helicopter service in 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil, and operates a network of six helipads in the area, including Alphaville, Campo de Marte, Berrini, Paulista, Itaim Bibi, and Guarulhos Airports. In Mexico City, Voom operates a network of six helipads in Montes Urales, Santa Fe, Interlomas, Zona Esmeralda, Toluca Airport and the Mexico City Airport. The company grew out of a 2016 initiative launched by A3, Airbus’ Silicon Valley innovation center and is headquartered in San Francisco.

To be clear: I think the Bolts have all the on-ice tools they need to win the Cup. They did last year, and if anything they're somewhat better now having divested themselves of Yzerman's Ranger recycling program. But they won't push through with Jon Cooper at the helm.

Rev. D. Josep RIBOT i Margarit

+ Rev. D. Josep VALL i Mundó

Venezuela designers turn to piracy after Adobe announces it will cut service

Venezuela designers turn to piracy after Adobe announces it will cut serviceVenezuelans on Tuesday desperately explored piracy workarounds to continue using Adobe programs after the software developer said it will cut access to its products for the country's users, citing U.S. sanctions, in a move critics said demonstrated the unintended consequences of the Trump administration's policies. San Jose, California-based Adobe Inc , whose products like Photoshop and InDesign are widely used by designers, illustrators and digital marketers, said on Monday it was "deactivating all accounts in Venezuela" to comply with the sanctions, which are part of Washington's effort to oust socialist President Nicolas Maduro. A slew of Venezuelan creative professionals took to social media to argue that Adobe's move would have a devastating impact on freelance designers and marketers, who are already struggling with a hyperinflationary economic collapse.

PayPal Writes Down $228 Million on Investments After Uber Sinks

PayPal Writes Down $228 Million on Investments After Uber Sinks(Bloomberg) -- PayPal Holdings Inc. will report a $228 million loss on investments before taxes in the third quarter, driven in large part by a bad bet on Uber Technologies Inc. just before it went public. The San Jose, California-based payments company said the investment in Uber, for $500 million at the initial public offering price, had declined 34%. Another investment, in Latin American online retailer MercadoLibre Inc., had declined 10%, PayPal said.PayPal’s stake in the world’s largest ride-hailing business was tied to what the companies described as a closer collaboration on payments technology. Uber is the most prominent app to use PayPal’s nascent Pay With Venmo feature. But Uber’s stock has under-performed due to a combination of slowing growth and accelerated losses. In an email, a PayPal spokeswoman cited the “inherent difficulty” in predicting the stock market for the mismatch between its previous forecast and the reality. The company will report financial results on Oct. 23.To contact the reporter on this story: Julie Verhage in New York at contact the editors responsible for this story: Mark Milian at, Molly SchuetzFor more articles like this, please visit us at©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

Millions of Californians Will Go Dark in Biggest Fire Outage Yet

Millions of Californians Will Go Dark in Biggest Fire Outage Yet(Bloomberg) -- PG&E Corp., the California utility giant forced into bankruptcy by two years of devastating wildfires, is orchestrating the biggest planned blackout yet to keep power lines from sparking more blazes.PG&E will start cutting electricity starting to almost 800,000 customers in the Bay Area and beyond, including parts of Santa Clara and Alameda counties. Shutoffs are set to begin just after midnight Wednesday -- when hot, dry winds are forecast to pick up speed -- and may last several days. Edison International also warned it may cut power to about 106,260 Southern California customers.Altogether, an estimated 2.7 million people may be affected.Never before has a utility planned such a widespread shutoff affecting so many customers at once to avoid a wildfire in California. It’s the latest testament to how climate change-driven extreme weather is forcing people and businesses alike to adapt. This week’s outage will mark the first time PG&E has coordinated a blackout in a major metropolitan area. Previous ones involved rural areas prone to wildfires. The planned shutoff appears to spare most of Silicon Valley’s big tech operations. Mountain View, Santa Clara and most of San Jose were outside of PG&E’s affected zones as of late Tuesday morning. A detailed map posted on PG&E’s website also showed Tesla Inc.’s Fremont factory lying outside the zones, as well as San Francisco, PG&E’s hometown. More areas, including the affluent county of Marin, were added to the zones at risk of cutoffs late Tuesday. The outage is striking almost two years to the day after a series of deadly wildfires -- most of them blamed on PG&E’s equipment -- broke out across Northern California’s wine country during a fierce wind storm. Then, last year, one of the company’s transmission lines ignited the state’s deadliest blaze yet -- the Camp Fire, which leveled the town of Paradise and killed 86 people. The estimated $30 billion in liabilities from those fires forced PG&E to declare bankruptcy in January.PG&E and the state’s other utilities are now taking more extreme measures than ever to keep their power lines from sparking blazes. PG&E has begun switching off transmission lines in advance of high winds.“This is shaping up to be one of the most severe dry wind events we’ve seen in our territory in recent years,” Michael Lewis, senior vice president of PG&E Electric Operations, said in a statement. “It could take several days to fully restore power after the weather passes and safety inspections are completed.”The website PG&E had set up to warn of the shutoffs was repeatedly crashing on Tuesday as people flocked to the site to find out whether they would be affected. For PG&E, the stakes are especially high. Another major blaze sparked by its equipment could upend the company’s restructuring plans. Shares closed down 5.2% at $10.90 in New York.More details on the upcoming shutoffs:The National Weather Service has posted red flag warnings in parts of six western states, meaning fire danger is high. In California, the warnings ring the Bay Area including Napa County, where the October 2017 Tubbs fire killed at least 22 and destroyed more than 5,600 structures.Sempra Energy’s San Diego Gas & Electric utility is considering its own shutoffs but hasn’t decided.Oil, natural gas and gasoline pipeline giant Kinder Morgan Inc. said it’s expecting “minimal” impact from the power cuts. “We are working closely with our customers to mitigate any potential effects,” the company said.PG&E’s service warning includes some of California’s most populous areas, including Santa Clara County’s almost 2 million people and Alameda County’s 1.7 million residents, according to state data. The blackout isn’t expected to shut San Francisco’s main rail service, the Bay Area Rapid Transit System. Although the electrified rail service gets power from PG&E, its own cables can redistribute electricity during a blackout and the agency has set up back-up generators, Bart spokesman Jim Allison said. “We’re like a little grid of our own,” he said.Back-up generator manufacturer Generac Holdings Inc. said it expects to see a spike in consultations and leads following the planned outage. Sales are already higher than they’ve ever been in California, the company said.\--With assistance from Nic Querolo and Brian K. Sullivan. To contact the reporters on this story: David R. Event Update For 2019-10-06

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Note: There was just an article the other day about how cold fresh water from the ice in Greenland melting is causing the Atlantic Ocean's circulation system to slow down. One sign that that is happening would be colder weather in Europe, since it is that circulation system that transports heat from the Gulf of Mexico across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. Much of Europe is at the same latitude as Siberia and it is only that 'conveyor belt' transporting oceanic heat to the area that keeps the climate in Europe as mild as it has been. So the more that circulation system slows down, the colder it will get in Europe, offset to some degree by the overall warming that the planet is experiencing...
