Tanya Holland brings TV glitz to West Oakland

 Cache
West Oakland twice struck out landing the Wayans Brothers, who were going to build a movie studio thing on the old Army Base until they realized their children's "fun zone" would be right next to toxic emissions from giant container ships. Woops.

Now the neighborhood has finally landed a development from a TV star, albeit on a slightly smaller scale and a lot more healthy: Tanya Holland, who previously hosted "Melting Pot" on the Food Network and ran the kitchen at Le Theatre in Berkeley, is opening Brown Sugar Kitchen next month at the former home of Triangle Cafe at Mandela and 26th.

The concept is "cooking with soul" using "locally grown, organic and seasonal ingredients whenever possible." Wines are from African American California vintners -- and from the South of France. There will be microbrews -- and Blue Bottle Coffee.

Think of soul food combined with formal French training. The recipes in Holland's cookbook should give you some idea.

Holland is doing a cooking demo Friday night at the Museum of California (in Oakland).

Failure of SF grease recycling goes ignored

 Cache
Photo courtesy nchoz on FlickrSo the city of San Francisco is trying to recycle restaurant grease into biofuel for automobiles, to save the city's pipes from having a heart attack, and to clean our air, and to save the planet from melting, and it's going to be so awesome, even the Chronicle and its self-styled nemesis BeyondChron manage to agree on its front-page-worthy awesomeness.

Which is why I think it's funny no one mentioned this has been tried before, and has failed.

Two years ago the Golden Gate Restaurant Association named Bay Area Biofuel of Richmond its "preferred vendor" for grease recycling, and then in May 2006 I wrote a big front page article saying the company was growing production based on the partnership, and hoped to soon be profitable. The executive director of the restaurant association said Bay Area Biofuel "has all the right stuff" for the partnership, and according to my notes told me the association had conducted interviews to "find the industry leader" before settling on the company.

In October 2006, my colleague Lizette Wilson checked in with Bay Area Biofuel as part of a industry roundup article. She found the company still unprofitable, looking for more money from investors and drowning in unprocessed grease ("We need to expand production significantly to keep up with supply and be profitable").

By February of this year, the company's website had disappeared.

Then in May, Bay Area Biofuel Inc. of Richmond, CA filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation in an Oakland court, according to Dow Jones Newswires' Corporate Filings Alert.

With Bay Area Biofuel gone, the city obviously needed to turn to a different company for its new grease recycling program. It settled on Blue Sky Bio-fuels of Oakland, which according to the Chronicle has been making biofuel for just two months.

I'm not saying San Francisco's new grease-to-biofuel effort will definitely fail, just that the city and its partner Blue Sky need to be asked what they will do to avoid the fate of Bay Area Biofuel and how certain they are about the sustainability of the restaurant grease recycling program. And coverage of the city's high-profile announcement should take note of the dead corporate body lying on this green road to the future.

By all accounts, including those of restaurateurs I interviewed in May 2006, restaurants are more likely to recycle their grease -- instead of pouring it down the drain -- if pickup is timely and reliable. There are well-established companies willing to reliably pick up restaurant grease for less glamorous ends than biofuel, as they have been doing for years. If restaurants are going to be encouraged to switch to a new recycler, it should probably be someone who is going to be around for some time to come.

Tony Bourdain keeping it real in Fruitvale

 Cache
My friend Connie emailed to say Anthony Bourdain is chowing down in front of at least one of the famed taco trucks in the Fruitvale district of Oakland:

so i just sent zack on a taco run to our favorite
truck (mi grullense) and he just called saying that
tony bourdain was there (w/the contra costa times).
he's super tall and ordered the cabeza and the tripa.

cool, huh?

Very cool, but what would be even cooler is if Tony could convince one of those truck owners to publish "Taco Truck Confidential." SO much scarier than Kitchen Confidential.

(PS, maybe he found this place through nerdfury??)

Your wine bottles are melting the planet, snob

 Cache
I just got a press release saying I should buy my wine from Oakland vintners because shipping bottles from Napa spews way more carbon than shipping grapes, since glass is so bloody heavy.

And it turns out there is new scientific research to confirm this, described the author Tyler "Dr. Vino" Coleman on his awesome blog.

Which has been covered elsewhere, but everyone, including Dr. Vino, emphasizes the solution of continuing to buy wine bottles, but from a local winery.

Yet Dr. Vino's research found boxed wine "has much less (carbon) intensity" than bottles.

Wine snobs object to boxed wine because it was historically used for low-quality wine and sometimes even marketed to alcoholics as cheap guzzle. Also, the wine suffers is you leave it in the box too long, since it's wrapped in plastic, so you can't age the wine.

The thing is, the vast majority of Americans who buy bottled wine do not cellar -- heck, their wine is lucky to last 48 hours! And the composition of wine, from what I gather, has evolved in response. Most bottles serve as props to perpetuate the acknowledged, romantic fiction that they will be lovingly aged by sophisticated drinkers in the cool, dry caves under their chateaus.

Get with the program, Monsieur Terroir! I'm ready to start buying some quality boxed wine to drink in my sweltering shack!

I'm also ready to start re-using my bottles. Hook a hose up to your tank or barrel or whatever, stick it in my used bottle or portable plastic tank, and fill 'er up! If it works in France it can work here. And ideally I would be able to buy not just from the winery, but at the wine shop, supermarket, heck even my gas station. I mainly use them for Ben & Jerry's anyway, and they're right across from Acme Bread and could give Kermit Lynch a run for their money!

It's time to end this preposterous charade of wastefully shipping bottles around.

Oakland hipster slams restaurant in RECORD TIME, so John Birdsall is now obsolete

 Cache
Flora, a cute little restaurant in downtown Oakland, has been open for approximately four hours, so of course it has already been declared DEAD AND PASSE AND LAME by a snide local hipster who has better taste in restaurants than you, because you live on the wrong side of the Caldecott Tunnel and work in an office and are probably wearing Dockers.

Kevin Cook, food writer at Novometro.com#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/6491&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com, hasn't actually been to Flora, but he has read another writer's blog about when she went to Flora earlier this afternoon, and he has already had it up to here with the restaurant, which he vows to never visit again, or ever, since he's never actually been in the first place.

Based on seven pictures and a 193-word review, Cook declared, in the comments of course, the following:
I will never understand why a place like flora attracts anyone. I don’t care how new the kitchen staff is–making a decent vinaigrette shouldn’t take any practice or time for a professional. Tuna melt? Come on, this place sounds like an upscale togos for the walnut creet office worker lunch crowd.
To recap: Kevin Cook does not understand why Flora does not throw in the towel and shut down and admit it's over, already, since it has managed to ruin its reputation in the four hours it has been open by making a bad vinaigrette and, uh, serving sandwiches, to people who work in offices. And possibly live in Walnut Creek. Ew.

This is the glorious future of food criticism, which shows why reviews printed on dead trees by so-called professionals who secretly love sandwiches and Contra Costa County and cubicles are now obsolete forever, oh holy god I want John Birdsall back they laid him off I didn't want to tell you but there it is The End.

(Seriously, the East Bay Express laid off Birdsall and six other staffers, including Kara Platoni.)

I walked past the restaurant last night and spied a small group inside, putting on the finishing touches. It is looking like the casual cocktail cafe we were promised last year, with a definite Raymond Chandler, late 1940s feel.

My cell phone shots are awful, so go check out this picture, taken by one of my companions last night.

Town Hall guys strike again

 Cache
Marcia at Tablehopper made me laugh: She says the owners of Town Hall and Salt House would "make a great law firm."

They're called Rosenthal, Rosenthal and Washington.

Or at least, that's what I'm calling them from now to eternity.

They're launching an "oyster bar and fish shack" and, in keeping with their operating philosophy, putting it in the same neighborhood as their other two restaurants (and not in Oakland). This lets the founders keep a close eye on all their properties and more easily trade staff and, presumably, ingredients. Plus you can do effective cross-marketing and more easily generate buzz, since you already have a neighborhood client base. At some point there's an upper limit where, if you open too many restaurants in one neighborhood you start cannibalizing your sales, but apparently these guys don't think they're close to that point yet.

Also, more chaos at Mint Plaza.

ACORN and Obama: Together Again

 Cache

Trumpets ACORN: "On Feb. 19, ACORN members will launch a new tactic in fighting foreclosures: civil disobedience. Participants in the ACORN Home Savers campaign nationwide will simply refuse to move out of foreclosed homes, or in some cases, will move back in. ACORN homesteaders intend to squat in their homes until a comprehensive, federal solution for people facing foreclosure is put in place."

ACORN's foot soldiers, funded with your tax dollars, will scream, pound their fists, chain themselves to buildings, padlock the doors and engage in illegal behavior until they get what they want. It's a recipe for anarchy. Threatens Baltimore ACORN's Louis Beverly, who calls himself a "Foreclosure Fighter":

"After you've used all your legal options, your last resort is civil disobedience. We're talking about families who have been in their homes 20 or 30 years. People who are assets in the community, who look out for the elderly, who have community associations, and these are the people being kicked out of the community."

We can all sympathize with good folks who can't pay their bills. But as I've said repeatedly in my criticism of the mortgage entitlement mentality embraced by both parties in Washington, home ownership is not a civil right -- and neither is home retention. Artificially propping up the housing market will only result in more of the same costly borrow-spend-panic-repeat cycles that got us into this mess in the first place. Failing corporations need to fail. So do failing home borrowers. This is borrowing from frugal renter Peter to pay profligate Paul's home loan.

Now that's the kind of theft that should be the subject of civil disobedience.

Instead, ACORN offices, funded with your tax dollars, are training teams of "Home Savers" -- described as "people ready and willing to mobilize on short notice to defend the homesteaders against attempts to evict them." Ready, willing and able to mobilize on short notice because they are either unemployed or employed full time as ACORN shakedown artists.

Guess who's encouraging them to defy the law. Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, who told them: "Stay in your homes. If the American people, anybody out there is being foreclosed, don't leave." The housing bullies will be assisted by left-wing propaganda documentarians at the Brave New Foundation, headed up by Hollywood lib Robert Greenwald, who will disseminate sob stories to crank up pressure while Obama pushes his housing entitlement plan.

ACORN is targeting the following cities: Tucson, Ariz.; Oakland, Calif.; Los Angeles, Calif.; Contra Costa County, Calif.; Orlando, Fla.; Baltimore, Md.; New York, N.Y.; Houston, Texas; San Mateo County, Calif.; Denver, Colo.; Bridgeport, Conn.; Wilmington, Del.; Broward County, Fla.; Boston, Mass.; Flint, Mich.; Detroit, Mich.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Raleigh, N.C.; Durham, N.C.; Albany, N.Y.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Dallas, Texas.

ACORN has waited three decades for this moment in the sun. And as Obama promised ACORN members at a forum in December 2007, "We're going to be calling all of you in to help us shape the agenda. We're gonna be having meetings all across the country ... so that you have input into the agenda." The moment is nigh. Prepare for lawlessness.

You Are On Indian Land: There There (On the Same Page 2019), thru Dec 31

 Cache
Tommy Orange's debut novel, There There, is this year's On the Same Page program reading. The entire campus community is encouraged to read the book and participate in classes and events this Fall.

“Orange’s debut is an ambitious meditation on identity and its broken alternatives, on myth filtered through the lens of time and poverty and urban life. Its many short chapters are told through a loosely connected group of Native Americans living in Oakland, Calif., as they travel to a powwow. They are all, as in Chaucer, pilgrims on their way to a shrine, or, as in Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying,” an extended family crossing the landscape. The novel is their picaresque journey, allowing for moments of pure soaring beauty to hit against the most mundane, for a sense of timelessness to be placed right beside a cleareyed version of the here and now.”

-- “The 10 Best Books of 2018” New York Times, November 29, 2018

The Moffitt Library exhibit (3rd floor) showcases the rich campus collections relating to Oakland's Native American community. The exhibit includes photos, videos, posters, and archival materials from the Ethnic Studies Library, Bancroft Library, Main Stacks, and from the Library's online databases. These selections illuminate some of the places and events in the book, including local pow wows, the Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland, and the Native American occupation of Alcatraz.

Session: Final Score College Football:: The AFL in 1967 on the GAME TABLE

 Cache

by M1Tanker

The 1967 AFL SEASON VIA DOWNEY
FINAL SCORE FOOTBALL

WE are embarked upon doing a series of American Football League seasons, starting with 1967. Why 1967? 1967 was the year where I really came of age in the sense of football. It was my second season of midget football, aka Pop Warner football. It was the first year I really followed the season from start to finish. Early in that season for some reason I can’t recall I switched from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Oakland Raiders. The Black and Silver simply appealed to me and struck some chord in me. Moreover, in retrospect this was a great Raiders team, an offensive juggernaut, the first of several plus such teams in a row. Ben Davidson’s handlebar mustache rocked.
Now, the Downey website tells the prospective player that “The Final Score Football line of games differs from our other quick play line, Ultra Quick, as the games all unfold in a quarter-by-quarter manner. Each team is rated individually for Offense, Defense, Strength of Schedule, and Home Field Advantage”. We will note that strength of schedule is used for the College game. How that works is like this – say the Miami Dolphins are playing the Oakland Raiders in Oakland in 1967. Rating move either to the left or right based upon the defensive rating and Home Rating. The Dolphins here modify their offensive rating of G by the Raiders defensive rating of -4 to come up with a new rating, in this case the letter C. The Raiders Offensive rating is P, so we add Miami’s rating of +3 for a for a S base offensive rating. That is Example #1. Unlike in the College Football version, there is no subtracting the two strength of schedules. Instead what we have is the rule for Home Field Advantage (HFA). That is very simple to use. Playing at Oakland gives you a 1/1, which means each side modifies their letter by moving it one column to the right. In Example #2 we calculate that and you see the final result. It is obvious that Oakland should win this game but with a very high die roll and a very low die roll by Oakland there is a tiny chance for the upset.

WEEK 1

In the only game of Week, the Broncos forgot show up for the 2nd half, after leading 20-10 at half-time. Boston ran up 20 points and Denver got a late same safety as Boston ate the ball to protect the lead. Are these the Patriots who were 8-4-2 in 1966, ready to compete for the title in the East?

WEEK 2

Week 2 saw Boston travel to San Diego. By the end of the 3rd Q, SD was ahead 27-14, winning by 34-21. Lance Alworth scored twice against Boston.

The Chiefs traveled to Houston. KC has a chip on its shoulder after losing the first Super Bowl. At the half, KC was down 7-6. Houston conducted two long scoring drives to upset the Chiefs 20-13.

Surprisingly the Jets-Bills game was rated a toss-up. It was a great early September day in Buffalo and the Bills faithful turned out to boo Namath and company, as Buffalo fans hate those folks from the other side of the state. The Jets jumped out to a 21-14 lead at the half. The Bills added 14 more in the 2nd half, but the Jets matched them with 16, winning 37-28.

Denver said the oddsmakers giving the Raiders a HUGE edge was simply Bay Area whacky thinking and they would make the local sportswriters eat their words. Final Oakland 45-Denver 17. In each half the Raiders outscored Denver by 14 points.

WEEK 3

Boston was hoping to pick up its 2nd win of the year against what they perceived as an upstart Raiders team just like in the Ultra-Quick Football Replay. This was never close as Oakland smashed Boston’s hope even worse in this one 51-7.

Denver and Miami had a wild first half, with the Broncos and Dolphins scoring at will, with a 21-20 1st half with Miami sensing a win. Denver tallied 14 in the 2nd half and the Dolphins scored 6, and were shut out in the 4th Q losing 35-26.

Houston and the Bills saw this as a pivotal early season game. All it proved was these offenses were offensive as the final was 6-6. Buffalo had a sliver of a chance with having the last roll, but failed to convert. Houston was happy to escape with the tie.

WEEK 4

Buffalo won a yawner 20-9. Boston did themselves no favors, rolling twice for Big Quarters, and each time getting a -3 column shift modifier, resulting in 0 points for those quarters.

John Hadl and Lance Alworth all week talked up how they would shred the Oilers secondary. Instead Houston rolled up 35 points on SD, jumping out to a 21-7 1st half lead.

KC was picked as a prohibitive favorite over the Dolphins. What’s worse than prohibitive as the Dolphins were a fish out of water, losing 59-3. KC put up 31 unanswered 2nd half points.

Namath was cold in Denver – and the early snow didn’t help. Denver was up 13-12 at the half, but only managed two 2nd half Field goals, while the Jets kicked 3 to escape with a 21-19 win.

WEEK 5

The defending AFL Champions came to Oakland wanting to put the Raiders in their place, and reestablish who was the Boss. The Chiefs led 21-19 at the end of 3Q’s. But the Mad Bomber put up 17 4th Q points, and Oakland wins 36-28.

The Jets were an 18-point favorite again over the Dolphins. Did someone know something we didn’t as the Jets cruised to an easy 28-10 win. Both teams got 0 points on a Big Quarter roll.

Unlike in Ultra-Quick Football, Buffalo gets no real Home Field Advantage (HFA). It was obvious too as SD rolled up 21 2nd half points, winning 38-16.

Denver played Houston very tough, being down only 6-3 at the half. Denver managed 2 more field goals…but Houston managed 3, winning a dull game, 15-9.

WEEK 6

The Jets pushed themselves deep into the Eastern Division Playoff race with a signature win against the Raiders both in Ultra-Quick and in real life. Here they lost 33-15, being down 20-7 at the half. The Raiders only scored 13 2nd half points, but the Jets were underwhelming with only 8 scored.

The Chiefs were a 26-point favorite against the Fins. They won this game in actual 41-0 – but Miami instead came ready for an upset losing 20-9. At the half it was 12-6. Had Miami perhaps got one Big Quarter roll….

Denver simply lost a close game 24-17, hurt by their inability to score in the 4th Q.

Air Hadl never got untracked as the Boston had 4 picks for the day as they won 26-22. Boston scored 16 points in the 2nd half, and that surge was enough for the win.

WEEK 7

The Jets were a +2 favorite for this game. Instead it was a slaughter on 5th Avenue as Namath and the Jets went up and down the field all day, winning 40-19. It was 30-9 at the half, propelled by a 2nd Q 24-point BQ outburst.

KC had to have this game if they were to get back to the Super Bowl and avenge themselves. Instead the Chargers like in UQ football won 30-26, helped by the 17-6 lead at half-time.

Boston was a 10-point favorite. Miami was only down 14-10 at the half, but never had a TD in the 2nd half, and losing a close one 24-19. The Dolphins dropped to 0-5.

Buffalo was hoping to make up some ground here with a win against Oakland. It was awful to watch as a Bills fan as Oakland held the Bills to 5 points. Buffalo shut down Oakland for only 26 points – and still lost by 21!

WEEK 8

Houston and KC both wanted this game. It showed as KC clung to a narrow 10-9 lead at the half. However Houston got only 3 points in the 2nd half and KC rolled up 17 more, winning convincingly 27-12.

The Jets traveled to Miami in order to entrench themselves in first-place. Instead the Jets looked like they were looking past Miami, winning by the skin of their teeth 18-13.

Oakland came into Boston a 12-point favorite. They left with a 27-point win as Boston never scored more than a FG, and that on their first possession of the day.

Denver nearly pulled off an upset here, being down 17-10 at the end of the 3rd Q. Instead they gave up 14 points and fell 31-17.

WEEK 9

Buffalo’s base offensive rating was a sickly B for this game. Houston won in a 25-0 romp.

The Jets needed a win against the Patriots in a big way. In a wild-game that saw 75 points scored, the Jets prevailed outscoring Boston 27-12 in the 2nd half.

Denver traveled to Arrowhead Stadium where they were a 25-point underdog. KC over-performed in a 51-13 dismantling of Denver. The Chiefs outscored the Broncos 34-6 in the 2nd half.

The Chargers find themselves in quite the playoff hunt hole with a 4-3 record after losing to Oakland 27-26. Oakland had to score at least 7 points on their last roll to avoid the loss and roll just that, to escape with the 27-26 win.

WEEK 10

Boston was hoping to show some spark of its former glory here. It was close at the half, with Houston up only 12-9. Houston added 16 – Boston added nothing, and the final was 28-9. In 1967 Boston won 18-7.

Buffalo saw an opportunity to sneak up on the Jets here by beating the Fins. Well the Fins despite being a 15-point underdog lost by 15. It was never that close.

The Jets were a 14-point underdog against the Chiefs. The Jets, well they lost by 14 points, 36-22. They could have forced a tie had they been able to shut KC down, but KC ran up 14 4th Q points.

Oakland had a small scare NOT! in its 46-17 win as it as they led 31-10 at the half against the Broncos.

WEEK 11

The Jets needed a win here to stay ahead and Buffalo didn’t tally enough to pull the upset, falling short 24-23.

Denver managed only 3 points at home, losing to Houston 26-3. In Ultra-Quick it was 20-6.

A low scoring game for KC, with the Chiefs winning 25-6. At the half KC only led 9-3, but a 16-3 KC 2nd half advantage was all that was needed to ensure the win.

Miami was a 17-point underdog heading into this game. Miami made up those 17 points plus some, yet still lost 25-22 as SD‘s 1st half lead of 20-8 was just enough to hold on to win by.

WEEK 12

The Dolphins were a 31-point underdog to the Raiders. Lamonica, Wells and Biletnikoff ensured this game wasn’t a game as Oakland won 51-6, worse than the Fins Ultra-Quick loss.

Buffalo and Denver – certainly not a game to warm the hearts of any fans or TV executives. It was as dull as expected as the Bills won 23-9, leading 9-3 at half-time.

The Jets continue to fly high, winning 44-19. The Jets jumped out to a 24-9 half-time lead, and were up 38-12 at the end of the 3rd Q.

Denver was a 15-point underdog, but came nowhere close to an upset like in 1967. It was 20-7 at the end of the 1st Q and that simply was too much for the Broncos.

WEEK 13

At this point San Diego wants the Denver game for pride. Denver was a 16-point underdog – and performed like a 16-point underdog, losing by 20, 33-13.

The Jets were rooting for a Patriots victory here. However, Boston’s chance for a tie vanished as Houston on its last roll got 7 to walk away with a 24-17 win.

The Dolphins tale of woe continued losing 21-5. It was 14-3 at the half and with a 0 in the 3rd Q, there was little hope for the Fins.

The Chiefs last and perhaps best chance to gain control of their own destiny presented itself when the Raiders traveled to Kansas City. KC was a slight favorite by 22-20. Oakland and KC played each other tight. The Raiders prevailed 21-18 but KC had a chance as Oakland put up a goose egg in their 4th Q. It was only 21-12 and 10 points would have meant a win – and KC got 6.

WEEK 14

KC’s depression was evident in their game against Buffalo. KC was 17-point favorite at home, yet escaped with a narrow 13-8 win in a snowy, rainy ugly day at Arrowhead Stadium. KC was only up at the half 10-6.

Denver flew into snow at Shea Stadium but the damp cold seemed to help as Denver surged to a 23-19 4th Q lead. And then Namath went to work, adding 20 points and Denver was left reeling.

Houston - all of their games seem to be tight. But playing the Dolphins who can’t score to score helped as Houston jumped to a 14-0 1st half lead. Houston added 13 and Miami got a FG in the last 3 minutes, losing 27-5.

The Raiders came in cocky to play the Chargers, being a 6-point favorite. Instead, they won 37-16, as the Raiders picked Hadl off 5 times. Oakland led 24-9 at the half.

WEEK 15

Buffalo who started out with such high hopes is now playing out the string. It was, well dull at 19-9. Buffalo led 10-0 at the half.

The Jets had to have this game. KC is simply wanting to get above .667 in terms of winning percentage – oh how the Super Bowl team underperformed. In a close game, the Jets won at home at Shea Stadium, 27-23 thanks to that 13-9 lead at half-time.

In perhaps a preview of the AFL Championship game if the Jets run into a snag, Oakland traveled to Houston. Oakland was a 2-point favorite. At the half it was 5-0 Oakland. It was 8-3 at the end of the 3rd Q, so upset was in the air until Lamonica hit Banaszak in the flat who rumbled 44 yards to put the game out of reach.

The Chargers wanted this game, as they still had a chance to finish at .500 for the year. Well let’s just say the Fins again looked like fish heads, being down 26-9 at the half, thanks to a 20- point BQ for the Chargers. The Chargers added 21 more in the second half and that was that. Miami failed to convert on a 4th Q BQ to make it respectable, and lost by 31.

WEEK 16

The Chargers came into Houston an 11-point underdog and played like it but worse, losing 32-13 – in Ultra-Quick they lost 26-6. It was 20-6 at the half and that was that.

Miami was hoping for a big boost from well, anything but found themselves down 17-7 at the end of the 3rd Q. There was still a chance but giving up 10 in the 4th put the game out of reach.

KC came into Denver a clear 19-point favorite. However Denver played them tough until the 4th Q, losing 22-13 to the Chiefs. KC only led 13-10 at the half.

Oakland badly wanted this game to go for the PERFECT Record, but it was close at the half, with the Raiders up only 13-3. The Jets put up 17 solid 2nd half points but Oakland came back with 24, winning 37-20.

WEEK 17

Miami played Houston tight, losing 12-3. At the half it was 3-3, and at the end of the 3rd Q Houston led 6-3. The Fins put on nothing in the 3rd and 4th Q here.

Oakland played a great game, as the fans wanted blood. Oakland simply cruised to an inspired 55-3 win. Oakland was up 35-0 at the half and 45-0 at the end of the 3rd Q.

The Chargers grounded the Jets Championship season, tying them 38-38. It was a wild game, as the Jets led 17-14 at the half. SD did themselves no favors by only getting 7 points off a BQ roll in the 2nd Q. But the Jets went into SD’s last roll with a comfortable 38-24 lead…and Hadl matched them with 14 points, tying the game. The Jets and the Oilers now must have a one game playoff as both the Eastern Division leaders tied one game apiece.

[BGCOLOR=#3366FF]EASTERN DIVISION PLAYOFF GAME[/BGCOLOR]

My oh my. The Jets are hosting Houston to see who will meet the perfect Raiders. Wild rumors flew that the folks at NBC wanted this game broadcast out of NYC as it is much sexier than Whoston….The Jets jumped out to 10-3 lead at the end of the 1st Q. Houston matched that 10 in the 2nd Q and shuts the Jets down. Houston now led 13-10 at the half. The Jets outscored Houston 7-6 in the 3rd Q to close the gap to 19-17. Houston put up another 6 and the Jets only got 7 and Houston won a nail biter 25-24, based on their -5 Defense. Houston’s Offense was rated slightly better as the Jets Defense is a +1.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

HOUSTON 15
OAKLAND 37
Despite winning the Eastern Division with a convincing 11-3-1 record, and their squeaker of a playoff win against the Jets on the road, Houston were a 16-point underdog for the AFL Championship game against the Raiders. Obviously the oddsmakers were way out in front of public sentiment as the Raiders dismantled the Oilers 37-15. The actual playoff game saw Houston leading 7-6 at the end of the 1st Q and was all knotted up at 9-9 at half-time. Oakland made some offensive tweaks and scored 14 points in each of the next two quarters and held the Oilers to only 6 and waltzed to a 37-15 win.

Airbus unit Voom said it would begin on-demand, per-seat helicopter service in the San Francisco Bay Area.
September 26, 2019, 3:34 PM

Airbus unit Voom will expand its per-seat, on-demand helicopter service to the U.S. beginning at the San Francisco Bay Area airports—Napa, Oakland, Palo Alto, Hayward, San Francisco, and San Jose—the company said on Thursday. Voom said it will also offer full-helicopter charters to additional area airports, including Half Moon Bay, Monterey, Livermore, and Sacramento. Customers can book flights via the Voom app or online up to one hour before departure and check-in at the departure helipad 15 minutes before boarding time.

Based on Airbus’s aviation expertise and our proven success offering our helicopter service in Brazil and Mexico, Voom is uniquely positioned to lead the transformation of air travel in the world’s most congested cities,” said Voom CEO Clément Monnet.

Voom connects passengers with certified and vetted helicopter operators in the Voom network and is not an operator. Voom said it is also launching “Voom for Business,” which features a specialized dashboard that is designed to simplify billing and booking under one account for employees and by other team members.

Voom launched its helicopter service in 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil, and operates a network of six helipads in the area, including Alphaville, Campo de Marte, Berrini, Paulista, Itaim Bibi, and Guarulhos Airports. In Mexico City, Voom operates a network of six helipads in Montes Urales, Santa Fe, Interlomas, Zona Esmeralda, Toluca Airport and the Mexico City Airport. The company grew out of a 2016 initiative launched by A3, Airbus’ Silicon Valley innovation center and is headquartered in San Francisco.

14 Great Sportswriting Reads for 2014

 Cache
Back during the Quickish Era, my favorite thing was the year-end "best-of" sportswriting list -- the first one was in 2011 ("Quickish 11 for '11"), and it proved pretty popular...not to mention enjoyable to prepare.

You can't find that original list anymore, but the tradition lives on in '14. And the underlying sentiment extends into another year: Sportswriting has never been better.

To be sure: "14" is an absurd, artificial constraint; there are many more worthy entries*, as my overworked browser tabs and gut-busting Pocket account indicate.

Still, here are 14 of my favorite pieces of sportswriting this year -- listed alphabetically by author.

Katie Baker, Grantland: "The Cold Never Bothered Him Anyway"

Chris Ballard, SI.com#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/121560&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com: "Twilight the Saga"

Jane Coaston, EDSBS: "On Women and Sports"

Bryan Curtis, Grantland: "Travonte's Party"

Steven Godfrey, SB Nation: "Meet the Bag Man"

Spencer Hall, SB Nation: "The Istanbul Derby"

Amanda Hess, ESPN.com#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/121560&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com: "Just Cheer, Baby"

Greg Howard, Deadspin: "The Big Book of Black Quarterbacks"

Sarah Marshall, The Believer: "Remote Control"

Brian Phillips, Grantland: "Diamonds in the Rough"

Paul Sonne and Anton Troianovski, Wall Street Journal: "Here's the Skinny on NBC's Olympic Latte Secret"

Louisa Thomas, Grantland: "Together, We Make Football"

* - Again, "14" is a dumb constraint and I lament the things I don't include as much as I enjoy the things I do. Here are a few under "Also Receiving Votes":

Flinder Boyd, Newsweek: "The Birdman's Vengeful Ghost"

RIP Diahann Carroll

Diahann Carroll, Pioneering Actress on 'Julia' and 'Dynasty,' Dies at 84

The Hollywood Reporter
By Mike Barnes
10/4/2019

She also landed an historic Tony Award, plus an Oscar nomination for her performance in 'Claudine.'

Diahann Carroll, the captivating singer and actress who came from the Bronx to win a Tony Award, receive an Oscar nomination and make television history with her turns on Julia and Dynasty, has died Friday. She was 84.

Carroll died at her home in Los Angeles after a long bout with cancer, her daughter, producer-journalist Suzanne Kay, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Carroll was known as a Las Vegas and nightclub performer and for her performances on Broadway and in the Hollywood musicals Carmen Jones and Porgy & Bess when she was approached by an NBC executive to star as Julia Baker, a widowed nurse raising a young son, on the comedy Julia.

She didn't want to do it. "I really didn't believe that this was a show that was going to work," she said in a 1998 chat for the website The Interviews: An Oral History of Television. "I thought it was something that was going to leave someone's consciousness in a very short period of time. I thought, 'Let them go elsewhere.' "

However, when Carroll learned that Hal Kanter, the veteran screenwriter who created the show, thought she was too glamorous for the part, she was determined to change his mind. She altered her hairstyle and mastered the pilot script, quickly convincing him that she was the right woman.

Carroll thus became the first African-American female to star in a non-stereotypical role in her own primetime network series. (Several actresses portrayed a maid on ABC's Beulah in the early 1950s.)
Baker, whose husband had died in Vietnam, worked for a doctor (Lloyd Nolan) at an aerospace company; she was educated and outspoken, and she dated men (including characters played by Fred Williamson, Paul Winfield and Don Marshall) who were successful, too.

"We were saying to the country, 'We're going to present a very upper middle-class black woman raising her child, and her major concentration is not going to be about suffering in the ghetto,' " Carroll noted.

"Many people were incensed about that. They felt that [African Americans] didn't have that many opportunities on television or in film to present our plight as the underdog … they felt the [real-world] suffering was much too acute to be so trivial as to present a middle-class woman who is dealing with the business of being a nurse.

"But we were of the opinion that what we were doing was important, and we never left that point of view … even though some of that criticism of course was valid. We were of a mind that this was a different show. We were allowed to have this show."

Julia, which premiered in September 1968, finished No. 7 in the ratings in the first of its three seasons, and Carroll received an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe for her work.

As the sultry fashionista Dominique Deveraux — the first prominently featured African-American character on a primetime soap opera — Carroll played a much edgier character for three seasons on ABC's Dynasty and its spinoff The Colbys, delightfully dueling with fellow diva Alexis Carrington Colby (Joan Collins).

While recuperating after starring on Broadway in Agnes of God, Carroll had found herself digging Dynasty — "Isn't this the biggest hoot?" she said — and lobbied producer Aaron Spelling for a role on his series.

"They've done everything [on the show]. They've done incest, homosexuality, murder. I think they're slowly inching their way toward interracial," she recalled in a 1984 piece for People magazine. "I want to be wealthy and ruthless … I want to be the first black bitch on television."

Carroll made perhaps her biggest mark on the big screen with her scrappy title-role performance in Claudine (1974), playing a Harlem woman on welfare who raises six children on her own and falls for a garbage collector (James Earl Jones).

The part was originally given to her dear friend, Diana Sands. But when Sands (who had played Julia Baker's cousin on several episodes of Julia) was stricken with cancer, she suggested Carroll take her place.

"The producers said, 'How can she do this role? No one would believe she could do it," Carroll said. "I remember the headline in the paper: 'Would you believe Jackie Onassis as a welfare mother?' … The very coupling of the name Jackie Onassis and Diahann Carroll is very interesting, if you think about it. There question was, how do we make anyone believe that she has [six] children? And to be nominated for an Academy Award, to do that, it was the best, the best."

Carol Diahann Johnson was born in Fordham Hospital in the Bronx on July 17, 1935. Her father, John, was a subway conductor when she was young, and her mother, Mabel, a nurse. She won a scholarship to the High School of Music & Art, where Billy Dee Williams was a classmate.

At 15, she began to model clothing for black-audience magazines like Ebony,Tan and Jett. Her dad disapproved at first, then began to reconsider when she told him she had earned $600 for a session.
Her parents drove her to Philadelphia on many weekends so she could be a contestant on the TV talent show Teen Club, hosted by bandleader Paul Whiteman. And then she won several times on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts program, where she first billed herself as Diahann Carroll.

After enrolling at NYU to study psychology, she appeared on the Dennis James-hosted ABC talent show Chance of a Lifetime in 1953 and won for several weeks. One of her rewards was a regular engagement to perform at the famed Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan.

Christine Jorgensen taught her how to "carry" herself onstage, she said, and she moved in with her manager, training and rehearsing every day. She soon was singing in the Persian Room at New York's Plaza Hotel and at other hotspots including Ciro's, The Mocambo and The Cloister in Hollywood, The Black Orchid in Chicago and L'Olympia in Paris.

She soon dropped out of college to pursue performing full-time and was brought to Los Angeles to audition for Otto Preminger's Carmen Jones (1954), landing the role of Myrt opposite the likes of Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge.

At the end of 1954, she made her Broadway debut as the young star of the Truman Capote-Harold Arlen musical House of Flowers. Walter Kerr in The New York Herald Tribune called her "a plaintive and extraordinarily appealing ingenue."

She was cast to play Clara in Preminger and Rouben Mamoulian's movie adaptation of Porgy and Bess (1959), but her voice was considered too low for her character's Summertime number, so another singer dubbed for her.

She met Sidney Poitier on that film, thus beginning what she described as a "very turbulent" nine-year romance with him. (Carroll then had first non-singing movie role, playing a schoolteacher opposite Poitier, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward in 1961's Paris Blues).

She would become renowned for her phrasing, partially a result of her studying with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.

In 1963, she earned the first of her four career Emmy noms for portraying a teacher yet again on ABC's gritty Naked City.

Richard Rodgers spotted her during one of her frequent singing appearances on Jack Paar's Tonight Show and decided to compose a Broadway musical for her. After scrapping the idea to have her portray an Asian in 1958's Flower Drum Song, he wrote 1962's No Strings, a love story revolving around an African-American fashion model (Carroll) and a nebbish white novelist (Richard Kiley).
His first effort following the death of longtime collaborator Oscar Hammerstein II, it brought Carroll rave reviews and a Tony Award, the first given to a black woman for best actress in a lead role of a musical.

Soon after hosting a CBS summer replacement variety show in 1976, she retired from show business and moved to Oakland. Landing the role of Dominique — the half-sister of John Forsythe's Blake Carrington — in 1984 put her back on the map in Hollywood.

She told the show's writers: "The most important thing to remember is write for a white male, and you'll have the character. Don't try to write for what you think I am. Write for a white man who wants to be wealthy and powerful. And that's the way we found Dominique Deveraux."

More recently, Carroll had recurring roles as Jasmine Guy's mother on NBC's A Different World, as Isaiah Washington's mom on ABC's Grey's Anatomy and as a Park Avenue widow on USA's White Collar. She also appeared in such films as Eve's Bayou (1997) and on stage as Norman Desmond in a musical version of Sunset Blvd.

She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2011.

Carroll recorded several albums during her career and wrote the memoirs Diahann, published in 1986, and The Legs Are the Last to Go: Aging, Acting, Marrying, Mothering and Other Things I Learned Along the Way, in 2008.

She was married four times: to Monte Kay, a manager and a casting consultant on House of Flowers; to Freddie Glusman, a Las Vegas clothier (that union lasted just a few weeks); to magazine editor Robert DeLeon (he died in an auto accident in 1977); and to singer Vic Damone (from 1987 until their 1996 divorce). She also had a three-year romance with talk-show host David Frost.

In addition to her daughter, survivors include her grandchildren, August and Sydney.

'You are handing him the win!' Eric Trump says his father's reelection campaign has raised $15MILLION in the 72 hours since Nancy Pelosi announced impeachment inquiry

Eric Trump has said that his father, President Donald Trump, has raised $15 million for his reelection campaign since House Democrats announced an impeachment probe.

'We have now raised almost $15 million in small dollar donations (including 50,000 NEW donors) since @SpeakerPelosi started this impeachment charade 72 hrs ago!' Eric Trump wrote in a tweet on Friday.

'Unbelievable numbers!! Keep it going — you and the dems are handing @realDonaldTrump the win in 2020!'

Speaker Nancy Pelosi had long resisted calls for impeachment from within her party, fearing backlash in the 2020 election — but the dam broke suddenly this week after allegations that the president pressured his counterpart in Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden.

After Pelosi announced an impeachment probe on Tuesday, Donald Trump's campaign seized on the opportunity to bolster his reelection effort.  'I need you on my Impeachment Defense Team,' the campaign said in one fundraising text message sent Tuesday.

'Huge groundswell of support leading to Trump landslide in 2020!' Trump's campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted on Wednesday.

The swell of contributions comes right before next week's third-quarter fundraising reporting deadline and will further pad what is already expected to be a massive haul.

More than a year out from the November 2020 contest, his campaign and the RNC have already reported pulling in more than $210 million since the start of 2019, Federal Election Commission records show.

That's more than all the current Democrats seeking to replace him raised combined during that period.

Majority of Americans Favor Trump's Policy Agenda

Democrats attack Trump because their policy goals aren't winning over the American public

Why do Democrat presidential candidates think that their “vote for me because I’m the biggest hater of everything President Donald Trump” is a winning strategy? Why are congressional Democrats redoubling their efforts to impeach Trump even after Robert Mueller’s investigation blew up in their faces? Well, a recent survey conducted by Harvard/Harris may offer the best answer.

The poll of 2,531 registered voters was somewhat unique: It presented not the candidates running for office but only questions regarding policy issues without associating the policies with either political party. For example, a question stated:

Which candidate are you more likely to vote for?

"A presidential candidate who stands for the green new deal on climate change, Medicare for all, free college tuition, opening our borders to many more immigrants and raising taxes to pay for these programs.

Or

A presidential candidate who stands for lower taxes and reduced government regulations, strengthening our military, strengthening our border to reduce illegal immigrants, standing up more to China and Iran and seeking better trade deals for the US."

For almost anyone who regularly follows politics, it’s quite clear that the first presidential candidate most accurately represents the policy proposals of the Democrat Party, while the second candidate’s policy agenda mirrors that of Trump. So, did the poll end up reflect many other national polls that show Trump trailing much of the Democrat field? Not quite.

A whopping 61% of those polled favored Trump’s agenda, which included a third of registered Democrats. And 65% of independents picked Trump’s policy agenda over what Democrats are offering. In fact, as Issues & Insights reports, “The poll went further and broke out specific policy issues. There wasn’t one item on the Democratic agenda that came in the top six. Only 38% say they were likely to vote for a candidate who promised to ‘raise taxes to pay for these programs.’ On the other hand, 83% said they’d likely support a candidate who promised to lower taxes.”

This explains why Democrats are playing up the fallacious “Trump is Adolf Hitler” narrative in the hopes that it will distract enough Americans from seeing their terrible socialist agenda. Moreover, it appears they see no other way to defeat Trump, which explains Rep. Al Green’s (D-TX) recent insistence that “if we don’t impeach this president, he will get reelected.”

US blacklists Chinese firms defying oil sanctions

The United States has blacklisted several Chinese companies and officials for allegedly shipping Iranian oil in violation of sanctions.

The sanctions, imposed by the US Treasury Department, against two subsidiaries of Cosco, a Chinese state-owned shipping giant, and four other companies, affect dozens of tankers and will further complicate talks to end the trade war.

American legislation to help protect democratic rights in Hong Kong will also heighten tensions.

Two Congress committees cleared the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act yesterday, paving the way for the bill to be voted on the floor in both chambers. The law would require an annual US review of the territory’s human rights records.

The bill follows more than three months of increasingly violent protests in Hong Kong against interference by Beijing. Joshua Wong, a leading pro-democracy campaigner, travelled to Washington this month to lobby Congress to pass the bill.

On his Facebook page he called its progress the result of “Hong Kong people’s sacrifice of blood and sweat”.

China said that its dealings with Iran were legal and should be respected and also denounced the Hong Kong legislation.

Geng Shuang, a spokesman of the foreign ministry, said: “China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the US sanctions against Chinese companies and individuals. China has always firmly opposed to the unilateral sanction and long-arm jurisdiction by the United States. China objects to the bullying acts in which US uses its domestic law to wilfully crack down on Chinese companies.”

On Hong Kong, he added: “This act confuses black and white in disregard of facts, blatantly backs the Hong Kong violent radicals up and grossly interferes in China’s internal affairs. China expresses strong indignation and firm opposition to that. Any attempt by the US to harm China’s interests will be met with a strong response.”

Carrie Lam, chief executive of Hong Kong, has withdrawn the extradition bill that first prompted the protests, but demonstrators say that they will fight on until all of their demands, including universal suffrage and an independent inquiry into police brutality, are met.

In an effort to defuse tensions, Ms Lam held her first community dialogue today. She encouraged the 150 participants, chosen by lottery from the more than 20,000 people who signed up to the event, to freely express themselves and even vent their anger. Yet she is highly unlikely to make further concessions to the protesters.

Aside from the Cosco subsidiaries, the companies sanctioned are the China Concord Petroleum Co and Kunlun Shipping Company, both registered in Hong Kong, and Kunlun Holding Company, registered in the Virgin Islands.

Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, said that the sanctions were intended to restrict the activities of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and punish those who continue to deal with them. “We are telling China, and all nations: know that we will sanction every violation,” he said.

The US has blamed Iran for attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities on September 14, which have rattled the Middle East and raised concerns about a broader war. Iran denies involvement.

Mr Pompeo said: “The more Iran lashes out the greater our pressure will and should be. That path forward begins now with two new actions.”

He said that Washington was also ramping up efforts to educate countries on the risks of doing business with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard entities and that it would punish those who continued to engage with them.

Kamala Harris, For Which People?

The junior senator from California has cemented herself as a presidential contender, but her history of changing her positions to secure new offices has created distrust. Harris ran to the right of former District Attorney Terence Hallinan and tacked to the center as attorney general, but now is veering to the left as a presidential candidate.

Jamal Trulove was innocent, but he spent nearly seven years in prison.

The father of four was convicted in 2010 of murdering his friend, Seu Kuka, in the Sunnydale housing project in San Francisco. Kuka was shot nine times in his head and back shortly before 11 p.m. on July 23, 2007, and, despite a crowd around the body when police arrived, only one person claimed to have seen the shooting, a neighbor who did not identify Trulove as the shooter.

The appeals court ruling that overturned Trulove's conviction found that the prosecutor had committed misconduct when she argued that the witness had risked her life and the lives of her family to testify. "This yarn was made out of whole cloth," Justice P.J. Kline wrote.

Since Trulove's release in 2015, he has resumed his acting career with a role in the 2019 film The Last Black Man in San Francisco. He also has won a $13.1 million settlement from the city of San Francisco and become a vocal critic of the chief district attorney whose office brought the flimsy case against him to trial. Just after he was convicted of a murder he didn't commit, that district attorney was elected attorney general of California. Then in 2016, she won election to the U.S. Senate.

Now, Kamala Harris is running for president of the United States, one of 19 Democrats still standing in the race to replace Donald Trump.

"Kamala Harris talks about how she's proud of her work as California AG, but never as head DA of San Francisco, where evidence of my framing by the SFPD was covered up by 'HER' office just to get a conviction," Trulove wrote on Twitter in August.

But in fact, Harris has made her experience as a prosecutor a key component of her presidential campaign. Earlier this month, she released what she called a "comprehensive plan to overhaul the criminal justice system."

Even her slogan — "For the people" — invokes the introduction of every prosecutor in a courtroom.

"I believe we must have the ability to prosecute the case against four more years of Donald Trump, and it will take a prosecutor to do that," Harris told the Democratic National Committee in San Francisco on Aug. 23. "And I'll tell you, we've got a big long rap sheet to work with."

Outside the grand ballroom where Harris gave her speech, a lone protester wandered the halls with a sign that read, "Kamala convicted innocent people in order to advance her career."

Defining Kamala Harris

Through a campaign spokesperson, Harris declined to be interviewed for this story. But she and her supporters say she worked to reform the criminal justice system from the inside as district attorney and attorney general while taking principled stances against the death penalty, targeting complex criminal enterprises, and going after big banks that hurt homeowners during the foreclosure crisis.

"She was one of the earliest leaders to fight human trafficking and invest in reentry," Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said at Harris' first presidential campaign rally in Oakland in January. "She was one of the earliest leaders on criminal justice reform. Back when it was still popular to be tough on crime, she was smart on crime."

Criminal justice reform advocates, however, have pointed out that in her first race for district attorney, Harris unseated former defense attorney Terence Hallinan, who was actively working on reforms, by criticizing his conviction rate.

She took a stand early as DA by refusing to seek the death penalty for a man accused of killing a police officer. Though highly controversial with the police, it was a politically popular stance in progressive San Francisco. But as attorney general, Harris appealed a court ruling that the state's death penalty was unconstitutional. Though controversial back in the Bay Area, it was a politically popular stance at the statewide level. Advocates for the rights of sex workers note that she opposed a ballot measure to decriminalize prostitution and led the charge to prosecute Backpage, an online listing site that facilitated the sex trade but which sex workers say was paramount to their safety.

As a presidential candidate, Harris rose to double digits in the polls after the first Democratic debate on June 27, at which she confronted former Vice President Joe Biden for his historic opposition to court-mandated school busing. But Harris faltered following the July 31 debate, when she was forcefully challenged on her record as a prosecutor by U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii.

Gabbard claimed that Harris jailed people for minor marijuana offenses and fought to keep exonerating evidence for death row inmates from coming to light. "The people who have suffered under your reign as prosecutor, you owe them an apology," Gabbard said.

Among the states where Harris is struggling to gain traction is California, where she trailed Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Biden in a Sep. 12-15 poll from KQED and Change Research. Harris bolstered her campaign in California in August, bringing on seven new staffers. But she remains well behind Biden, Warren and Sanders in national polls.

Joe Tuman, a professor of political communications at San Francisco State University, said most Democratic voters primarily want a nominee who can beat Trump. But polls show that most top-tier Democratic candidates could win in a head-to-head match-up, so Harris needs to find a way to differentiate herself from the moderate Biden and the progressive Warren and Sanders. Tuman believes that Trump fears Harris more than he does Biden, Warren or Sanders, pointing out that the president has yet to brand her with a nickname, such as "Sleepy Joe," "Pocahontas" or "Crazy Bernie."

Missing with stolen car, disabled dog found dead in Florida
OAKDALE PARK, Fla. (AP) - An animal rescue group says a disabled dog has been found dead, five days after the car it was sitting in was stolen.

Rescue group 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida says officials told the owner and the group Monday that the car was found, but the husky mix had died.

Owner Wanda Ferrari said she had left the car running with air conditioning on for her dog Zorra while she went into a store Thursday in Oakland Park, Florida.

Zorra used a pink wheelchair to walk because its back legs were paralyzed. The 13-year-old dog was in the backseat when the station wagon was taken.

Zorra was Ferrari's constant companion as the woman deals with breast cancer.

The rescue group had offered a $3,000 reward for Zorra.

Josh Jacobs Rallies Raiders Past Bears 24-21

 Cache
Josh Jacobs scored his second touchdown of the game with a leap from the 2-yard line with 1:57 to play, capping a 97-yard drive that helped the Oakland Raiders rally after blowing a 17-point lead to beat the Chicago Bears 24-21 on Sunday night.

The touchdown was part of a roller-coaster game that delighted the sellout crowd in London. The Raiders (3-2) broke out to a 17-0 halftime lead only to fall behind the Bears (3-2) in a mistake-filled third quarter.

Then Oakland fumbled at the goal line when going in for the go-ahead score, needed a replay review to overturn a fumble on a successful fake punt on the game-winning drive and then intercepted Chicago backup Chase Daniel with 1:14 to go to seal the victory.

It sure didn't come easy but made Oakland's weeklong stay in London a successful one, ended by a satisfying victory in their first game against the Bears since dealing star edge rusher Khalil Mack to Chicago before last season.

That trade has come under heavy scrutiny as Mack led the Bears to the playoffs last year while the Raiders struggled. But Oakland came out ahead this day with Mack's only big play coming when he recovered a botched pitch by Derek Carr that sparked Chicago's third-quarter comeback.

The Bears turned that turnover into a 1-yard run by David Montgomery and got two TD passes from Daniel to Allen Robinson in the third quarter to take a 21-17 lead.

It looked as if it wouldn't be Oakland's day when Sherrick McManis punched the ball loose from Trevor Davis at the goal line and Prince Amukamara recovered at the 1 for Chicago.

A brilliant top-tapping sideline catch by Robinson and a roughing the passer penalty on Maurice Hurst that angered the Raiders and overturned an interception by Daryl Worley helped the Bears move the ball off the goal line.

Chicago pinned Oakland to the 3 with the punt before the Raiders responded with their longest game-winning drive in the fourth quarter in at least 20 years, aided by Erik Harris' 3-yard run on a fake punt after Chicago committed a running into the punter penalty on fourth-and-6.

Carr completed a 23-yard pass to Foster Moreau on third-and-1 to get the ball deep and Jacobs finished it off as part of a big night from the player acquired with one of the draft picks Oakland got for Mack. Jacobs ran 123 yards and two scores and added three catches for 20 yards.

DOMINANT HALF

The Raiders outgained the Bears 208-44 in the first half, had 14 first downs compared to two for Chicago and led the game 17-0 to match the team's biggest lead at any point since Gruden returned as coach last year.

SACK ATTACK

The lack of a pass rush had been a recurring issue in Oakland ever since the Mack trade. The Raiders came into the game with a league-low 18 sacks since the start of 2018 but had three alone in the first half as Daniel held onto the ball too long. Maxx Crosby, Benson Mayowa and Maurice Hurst all came up with sacks, the first time Oakland had three in the opening half since Mack's final season with the team in 2017. Hurst added another on the final play of the game.

INJURIES

Bears: Bears DT Akiem Hicks (elbow) left the game in the first half and didn't return.

Raiders: Jacobs left the game briefly with an elbow injury but returned.

UP NEXT

Bears: Chicago gets a week off following the long trip and will host New Orleans on Oct. 20.

Raiders: Oakland gets the week off and then will continue a 48-day stretch between home games with a visit to Green Bay on Oct. 20.

Event Update For 2019-10-06

 Cache

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Note: There was just an article the other day about how cold fresh water from the ice in Greenland melting is causing the Atlantic Ocean's circulation system to slow down. One sign that that is happening would be colder weather in Europe, since it is that circulation system that transports heat from the Gulf of Mexico across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. Much of Europe is at the same latitude as Siberia and it is only that 'conveyor belt' transporting oceanic heat to the area that keeps the climate in Europe as mild as it has been. So the more that circulation system slows down, the colder it will get in Europe, offset to some degree by the overall warming that the planet is experiencing...

California faces historic power outage due to fire danger

 Cache

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Millions of people were poised to lose power throughout northern and central California after Pacific Gas & Electric Co. announced Tuesday it would shut off power in the largest preventive outage in state history to try to avert wildfires caused by faulty power lines.

PG&E said it would begin turning off power to 800,000 customers in 34 counties starting after midnight Wednesday amid forecasts of windy, dry weather that created extreme fire danger. To the south, Southern California Edison also said Tuesday that more than 106,000 of its customers in parts of eight counties could face power cuts.

The news came as residents in the region's wine country north of San Francisco marked the two-year anniversary of deadly wildfires that killed 44 and destroyed thousands of homes. San Francisco is the only county in the nine-county Bay Area where power will not be affected.

The utility had warned of the possibility of a widespread shut-off Monday, prompting residents to flock to stores for supplies as they prepared for dying cellphone batteries, automatic garages that won't work and lukewarm refrigerators.

Flashlights, batteries and propane tanks for barbecues were in high demand as people prepared for an outage that PG&E said may last "several days."

"We sold out of lanterns this morning. The shelf is completely empty," said Howard Gibbs, the manager at Ace Hardware in the town of Lafayette, 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of San Francisco. "We've got just a few flashlights left, and we're down to our last couple propane tanks, too."

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf asked residents Tuesday not to clog 911 lines with non-emergencies and urged people to be prepared. The city canceled all police officers' days off in preparation for the outages.

"We...
