Where to Write a Novel in....Budapest, Hungary

 Cache
As part of a wider programme to expand the remit of this blog beyond its Kartvelophile roots, and towards a larger (if Georgia-centric) exploration of Ways and Places to be a Decadent Bohemian Novelist (on a freelance ghostwriter's salary or graduate student's stipend), I bring you the international edition of "Where to Write a Novel In...":

Budapest is a horrible city. However, in its bleak and filthy melancholia, Budapest (unlike, for example, London), is a fantastic city in which to write a novel. Beautifully decayed, gleefully seedy, and the perfect place to contemplate ending a tragic love affair while sitting in tepid hair-infested sweat-water at  the Gellert Baths and ruminating on the existential filthiness of mankind, Budapest is filled with the sort of places in which you can scribble away entire novellas of infidelity, moonshine, and man's tendency toward sin at a moment's notice, preferably while eating cake.

I visited Budapest from Vienna in late 2008, perhaps unsurprisingly while stiff-upper-lipping my way through the last days of a tragically doomed Romance (as one does), and reacted all too defensively to the city's raucous despair. However, the art-house Urania Cinema (and Cafe), where my Belarusian friend A. ("I am from Minsk, and even I find this city depressing!") and I ended up after a failed attempt to find a jazz club (predictably, it had been turned into a strip joint), managed to help me transubstantiate my misery into high art (and cake). The cinema programme is highbrow enough for me to forgive the fact that it's no longer a theatre, and the cafe looks like what would have happened if William Morris had taken LSD and stumbled onto the Orient Express.

We watched the excellent Miss Pettigrew Lives for A Day and I hatched an idea for a novel...

Urania is located at Rakoczi Utca, 21, near the Astoria Metro Stop

MVNO Monday: a guide to the week’s virtual operator developments

 Cache
Peru has a new MVNO in the form of *Cuy Movil*, which launched on 1 October over the *Claro Peru* network. The youth-orientated virtual operator received a licence from the *Ministry of Transport and Communications (Ministerio de Transportes y Comunicaciones, MTC)* back in January 2018, and went on to secure a wholesale deal with Claro in April that year. CEO Mariano de Osma told Gestion.pe#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/24773&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com that he expects the newcomer to sign up 40,000 customers within its first year of operation. Sticking with Peru, *Tuenti Movil*, the *Movistar Peru* sub-brand that launched back in October 2014, will be discontinued as of 13 October. As a result, all 150,000 Tuenti customers will be migrated onto Movistar’s ‘value proposition’ tariff. Luis Villalobos, director of the cellco’s pre-paid segment, commented: ‘Customers and their experience with our services are at the centre of our priorities. In that line, thinking of simplifying the value offer focused on the satisfaction of our users, it has been decided that Movistar is the brand that serves Tuenti customers in Peru.’ *Soy Movil* (legally known as *Telenort Soluciones Integrales*) is the latest virtual operator to enter the increasingly crowded Spanish MVNO market. The Cantabria-based company is offering a dual 4G/fibre proposition, with both services offered over the *Grupo MASMOVIL* network. *edpnet*, a Belgian full-service B2B provider which also has a presence in the Netherlands, has reportedly relaunched its MVNO business over the *Orange Belgium* network, replacing its existing arrangement with *Telenet*. The network switch has been made possible as a result of edpnet’s February 2019 takeover of *Galaxy Group*, a Dutch firm active within the corporate segment. Galaxy Group operates a pair of MVNOs – *Galaxy Mobile Solutions* in Belgium and *Galaxy Business Networks* in the Netherlands – and edpnet has inherited what COO Joachim Slabbaert describes as ‘a very good MVNO contract with Orange’. Over in Hungary, local news portal HWSW reports that *UPC Hungary* stopped selling new mobile products on 1 October, following the telco’s 31 July takeover by *Vodafone Group* – owner of local player *Vodafone Hungary*. Since September 2019 UPC and Vodafone have been offering discounts on fixed/mobile bundles instead, ahead of a planned swap-over from UPC to Vodafone branding, which is expected to take place in April 2020. TeleGeography notes that UPC Mobil launched in November 2014 and claimed around 120,000 subscribers as of 30 June 2019. Meanwhile, the shutdown of *Cyta Mobile* in Greece has been postponed from 30 September 2019 until 31 October 2019 ‘in order to better serve former Cyta customers’, new owner *Vodafone Greece* has announced. The move follows the EUR117 million (USD152 million) takeover of Cypriot-owned alternative fixed line and broadband operator *Cyta Hellas* by Vodafone in July 2018. Cyta Hellas, which launched its Cyta Mobile MVNO service in July 2014, using the network of its now-parent Vodafone Greece network, represented one of the country’s few notable MVNOs. In an article published by the News Corp Australia Network last month, a pair of the country’s newer MVNO entrants have issued updates regarding their respective subscriber uptake. *Pennytel*, which targets regional Australia, with a particular focus on the over-50s market, has notched up 10,000 customers since its February 2018 relaunch over the *Telstra* network. Meanwhile, *Moose Mobile*, which targets the youth segment with refurbished handsets, has signed up 35,000 users since it launched over the *Optus* network in May 2017. Moose Mobile chief executive officer Dean Lwin commented: ‘Consumers haven’t heard of these smaller brands, so they don’t trust them, but if you look for deals with no contract term there’s really nothing to lose, except the chance to save some big money.’ US mobile giant *Sprint* has informed Fierce Wireless that by mid-September its 5G network was made available for MVNO use in Chicago. Going forward, by end-October the cellco expects to have 5G activated for MVNOs in all nine of its operational 5G markets, which also include Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC. Kosovo’s telecoms watchdog the *Regulatory Authority for Post and Electronic Communications (Autoriteti Rregullator i Komunikimeve Elektronike dhe Postare, ARKEP)* has ruled that subscribers to services provided by MVNO *Dardafon*, which operates under the *Z Mobile* brand, will be transferred to network host *Telecom Kosovo (TK)*, along with the numbering resources currently assigned to the reseller. The handover is due to take place at the end of a 120-day transition period following TK’s decision in July this year not to renew its MVNO agreement with Z Mobile, with which the state-owned telco is embroiled in a prolonged legal dispute. ARKEP explained its decision, stating that it sought to ensure that customers would not have their service interrupted. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Z Mobile claimed 234,480 subscribers at the end of June 2019, equivalent to around 12.5% of the total mobile market at that date. Finally, the *Danish Energy Agency (DEA, or Energistyrelsen)* has approved a request by *Lebara Denmark* to apply a roaming surcharge to its customers in order to cover any potential losses when its customers roam in the EU. The watchdog cites ‘special and exceptional circumstances’, namely the fact that the MVNO has documented a ‘negative retail roaming profit of more than 3%’ since the rule change. Since 15 June 2017 telecoms companies have not been able to legally charge for roaming in the EU, and consumers therefore pay the same price for using their mobile phone in other EU countries as they do at home. We welcome your feedback about *MVNO Monday*. If you have any questions, topic suggestions, or corrections, please email *editors@commsupdate.com#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/24773&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com* TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database is now home to the telecoms industry’s fastest-growing collection of MVNO data, covering more than 90 countries and 1,000 virtual operators. If you would like to find out more, please email *sales@telegeography.com#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/24773&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com*

Vodafone brand to replace UPC from April, report claims; Vodafone activating 5G sites in Budapest

 Cache
From April 2020 the UPC brand for fixed broadband, cable TV and telephony in Hungary will be replaced by that of its owner, Vodafone, with all mobile and fixed services to be sold under the Vodafone banner, according to a report by Hungarian ICT website HWSW. The planned move follows the Vodafone/UPC Hungary merger completed on 31 July 2019, with the group offering discounts on bundling UPC fixed services with Vodafone mobile packages since September, whilst the UPC Mobil MVNO ceased selling mobile services to new customers on 1 October. HWSW also quoted an anonymous industry source as saying that Vodafone Hungary will switch on its first commercial 5G mobile base stations in Budapest on 17 October 2019, using its existing 3.5GHz-3.6GHz spectrum. Since May, Vodafone Hungary has operated ‘live, permanent, networked’ 5G base stations at the ‘Zala ZONE’ vehicle testing ground in Zalaegerszeg and at its Budapest headquarters, using the same spectrum which has effectively given it a headstart on main rivals Magyar Telekom and Telenor Hungary. However, all three main players are expected to receive 5G spectrum in a licensing process scheduled for completion in late October/early November. Separately, in a press release, Vodafone Hungary highlighted a showcase of convergent 5G/home services at the Internet Hungary event (1-2 October 2019), with demos including ‘5G VR tennis’ and ‘Vodafone Living Room’ integrated services capitalising on the merger of Vodafone and UPC Hungary.

DIGI Hungary continues mobile expansion despite spectrum shut-out

 Cache
Quad-play network operator DIGI Hungary is continuing to expand its 4G LTE mobile network coverage, having recently added a further 50 settlements to the footprint to cover a total of 237 settlements, reports Hungarian ICT website HWSW. The expansion comes despite the decision of Hungarian regulator NMHH to exclude DIGI from the country’s 5G spectrum licence auction which is scheduled to conclude by early November. DIGI has appealed the ruling, which is currently under review. DIGI switched on its mobile services in late May 2019, initially for its existing fixed broadband/TV customers only, on an introductory promotional tariff.

The Gonzo Daily: Monday
Thank you very much to everybody who has written over the past forty eight hours, sending their good wishes. Mother is still in hospital, and I suspect that she will be for the next few days, at least. However, today she was sitting up by the side of the bed, and eating, which has got to be a good thing. We shall be going to see her later, probably tying it all in with collecting Carl, who is down here to help us hold the fort while Graham is in America. Things are rather fraught at the moment, but I expect they will all come together eventually. These things usually do.
Please remember us in your thoughts and prayers.

The Gonzo Daily: Weekend
I have bad news, I’m afraid. Whereas Corinna’s appointment on Friday gave us more information about her forthcoming operation, it didn’t break much new ground. However, when we got home it was obvious that mother had gone downhill fast. We called an ambulance, and mother and Corinna went off to Barnstaple. She was eventually admitted to the medical assessment unit sometime after midnight. We went to see her yesterday, and I spoke to the staff nurse on duty just now. She is stable though frail, and is unlikely to be discharged before the middle of the week.
Please remember us all in your thoughts and prayers.
To complicate things further, Graham is going to be in America for the next three weeks, and Kyle will be joining us tomorrow. I feel very much like the little bloke who used to stand on the steps of the Ministry of Defence every evening during the Falklands War, giving the day’s news bulletin.

The Gonzo Daily: Thursday
As warned earlier in the week, tomorrow Corinna and I have a hospital appointment earlyish in barnstaple. For this, and all sorts of other reasons, I will be out of action tomorrow, so there will not be blogs after today until Sunday. Also Graham is going away on Saturday and will be in America for the next few weeks, so our productivity may be a little curtailed this month. But, then again, it may not. Fingers (and any other extremities that you have) crossed s'il vous plait.

With Apologies to The Buddha

 Cache

To paraphrase a famous saying by Buddha:

Believe nothing, oh Facebook friends, just because you have been told it by a Brexiteer down the pub, or it is commonly believed by Daily Mail or Sun Readers and shared on Facebook, along with some made up garbage about the Lisbon Treaty and an EU Army, or because it is traditional within the Conservative Party, or because you yourselves have imagined it after a night on the piss and watching conspiracy theory YouTube videos from Brexit Central. Do not believe what Farage tells you merely out of respect for Farage - not that he deserves any as he's a compulsive liar (along with Boris). But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis by experts in their respective fields (because they have studied their subjects), you find to be conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to and take as your guide.

The only way in which Boris can both send the letter asking for an extension AND exit the EU on the 31st is if an EU country vetoes the extension. It's rather obvious when you think about it.

Keep your eyes on Hungary. That said, what's in it for Hungary to bow to Boris? What can the EU offer Voktor Orban not to veto? I would suggest that the EU's pockets are far deeper than Boris' and I doubt Orban wants funds to dry up by virtue of the UK leaving.

Don't flatter Boris by thinking this is his strategy; it belongs to someone far more politically savvy than him - his political technologist, Dominic Cummings. However, by stating he will both comply with the law preventing him from instigating a no deal Brexit and leave on the 31st, he's giving the game away through vanity, which tends to be the downfall of villains in films. Basically he's monologuing and revealing his plans.

How the Swiss viewed Communism in the Cold War years

 Cache
In Switzerland, the Cold War was waged in the minds of the people. Fear of Soviet Communism was widespread, and suspicion surrounded anyone who didn’t clearly distance themselves from it. The country was overtaken by paranoia that the enemy dwelt within. In November 1956, Soviet tanks rolled into Hungary to nip democratic reform in the bud. Hundreds of thousands fled, many of them to Switzerland, where they were welcomed with a degree of warmth never experienced by refugees during World War II – nor by any other group of refugees in Switzerland since. This article marks the beginning of our series “Switzerland and the Cold War” to mark 30 years since the Berlin Wall fell. The historian David Eugster sheds light on various aspects of Switzerland at the time: a neutral country, situated between two blocs, while clearly identifying ideologically with the West. Why? The Hungarians were not just people in need, but brothers and sisters in the fight against communism. At the same ...

Iceland versus Latvia today

 Cache
The Icelandic women’s national football team will today play Latvia in their battle to qualify for Euro 2021. The match starts at 17.00 in Liepaja, Latvia, where pitch conditions could have an impact on the outcome. The Icelanders were supposed to train at the Daugava stadium in Liepaja yesterday, as is traditional the day before a match. But very heavy rain in recent days meant the pitch was not suitable for use. Despite this caution, the pitch has seen better days and the goal boxes at both ends are muddy and the grass is generally uneven, as can be seen on fotbolti.net#utm_source=googlier.com/page/2019_10_08/77637&utm_campaign=link&utm_term=googlier&utm_content=googlier.com, here.  Iceland coach Jón Þór Hauksson says his players will not allow the conditions to trouble them, however.   “They [local groundskeepers] have of course landed in some difficulties with the pitch, as I understand it, so we are training here in the training area when we should have been training in the stadium. But we are lucky to have an experienced team and it will not put the group on the back foot, or the rest of us. In fact, we are very satisfied with life here in Latvia,” Jón Þór told RÚV yesterday.  Latvia are without a point after their first two games—both of which were played at Daugava stadium. The Latvians lost 4-1 against the world cup bronze medallists, Sweden on 3rd September, despite unexpectedly going 1-0 up early in the game. They then lost 2-1 against Slovakia last Friday.  Iceland, meanwhile, won both of their first two group games. Firstly with a 4-1 victory over Hungary in Reykjavík on 29th August, and then a 1-0 win against Slovakia, also at home, four days later.  Iceland currently sit top of the group, tied with Sweden on six points. The Swedes meet Slovakia in Gothenburg at the same time as Iceland and Latvia play this afternoon. The top finishing team in each group will qualify for Euro 2021 in England, while the three best-performing second-place teams among the nine groups will also qualify.  Iceland’s game against Latvia in Liepaja at 17.00 today will be shown live on RÚV. The programme starts at 16.30. Click to follow RÚV English on Facebook.

25.10. Kirsi Santti: Desmoid tumor: Oncological management and prognostic biomarkers

 Cache

Desmoid-type fibromatosis, also known as aggressive fibromatosis or desmoid tumors, are very rare neoplasms, accounting for 0.03% of all newly diagnosed neoplasms and less than 3% of all soft tissue tumors. Desmoid tumors occur in different anatomic locations in musculoaponeurotic tissues and may be painful, although they are seldom fatal. Approximately 10% of desmoid tumors are associated with an inherited condition called familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) while the majority of desmoid tumor patients harbor a somatic mutation in the CTNNB1 gene. Indolent tumors are surveilled; however, progressing and symptomatic desmoid tumors are managed with surgery, radiotherapy, or systemic therapy. Different systemic approaches include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, endocrine therapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and chemotherapy.

This thesis evaluated the outcome of oncological treatments at Helsinki University Hospital. We tried to seek novel molecular markers to identify different risk groups. We also aimed to illuminate the underlying pathobiological mechanisms in desmoid tumors.

The patients were treated at Helsinki University Hospital between 1987 and 2010 in study I (49 radiotherapies) and until 2011 in studies III (n = 76) and IV (n = 83). The patterns of recurrences after radiotherapy were analyzed using image co-registration. Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) 1.1. were utilized for response evaluation in studies I and II; additionally, World Health Organization (WHO) criteria were used in study II. Study II examined the effect of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor ribociclib together with endocrine treatment in a patient with multifocal desmoid tumors and FAP. A tissue microarray was built of the formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded desmoid tumor specimen. The slides were immunohistochemically stained with Ki67, cyclin D1, cyclin A, and estrogen receptor β antibodies. Digitally assisted evaluation of the slides was carried out using Pannoramic Viewer software (3DHistech, Budapest, Hungary).

Radiation dose was independently associated with time to progression in patients treated with surgery combined with radiotherapy or radiotherapy alone (hazard ratio 0.71, p = 0.02). Local control rate was 75% at five years. The majority of recurrences after radiotherapy occurred at the margin of radiotherapy target (82%, 9/11), two were in-target (18%, 2/11), but none was out-of-target. Ribociclin, goserelin, and letrozole reduced symptoms and stabilized multiple desmoid tumors in a patient with treatment-resistant multiple desmoid tumors for ten months. High expression of cyclin A predicted poor outcome after surgery (hazard ratio 1.9, p = 0.02) whereas Ki67 or cyclin D1 expression rate did not reach statistical significance. Estrogen receptor β expression level had a positive association with proliferation.

This thesis is a comprehensive investigation of a rare disease entity. The results demonstrate that radiotherapy is an effective treatment in desmoid tumors. High cyclin A expression is a novel risk factor for recurrence after surgery.

24 famous airlines that have gone out of business

 Cache

Pan Am Boeing 747

British airline and tour operator Thomas Cook ceased operations in late September.

The 178-year-old travel company shut down after failing to secure a £200 million rescue loan.

It joins a number of other low-cost and leisure-oriented airlines to collapse this year, including Wow Air and X, amid stiff competition along with political and economic instability.

Over the past two decades, a number of well-known airline brands have disappeared from the aviation landscape. A large number of these brands have gone away due to mergers as airlines joined together in order to survive the brutally competitive market place.

Northwest and Delta merged to form the new Delta Air Lines. United and Continental merged to create the new United Airlines with planes painted in Continental livery. TWA was acquired by American Airlines. America West and US Air merged to become US Airways. American Airlines and US Airways then merged to form a new American Airlines under US Airways management. Virgin America was acquired by Alaska Airlines while AirTran Airways and Morris Air were acquired by Southwest Airlines.

In Canada, Canadian Airlines was merged into Air Canada. While in Brazil, Varig was acquired by Gol. The UK's British Caledonian and British Midland were both acquired by British Airways, itself created by the 1974 merger of British Overseas Airways Corporation, British European Airways, and two smaller regional carriers.

But with the sudden collapse of Thomas Cook in mind, we at Business Insider decided to compile a list of airlines that went out of business the old fashioned way, running out of money.

Here's a closer look.

This article was originally published by Benjamin Zhang in March 2019. It was updated by David Slotnick in October 2019.

Lakers Airways Skytrain: defunct 1982.

Founded by Sir Freddie Laker in 1966, the airline and its fleet of McDonnell Douglas DC-10 "Skytrains" promised low-cost travel across Atlantic for half the price of its competitors. Unfortunately, the airline could not sustain the business and collapsed under the weight of £270 million of debt in February 1982.

Braniff international Airways: defunct 1982.

The Texas-based airline was one of the most interesting and colorful companies in the business from its unique multi-color livery to its Emilio Pucci designer flight attendant uniforms. Sadly, the airline went belly up in May 1982 after racking up $733 million in debt. Subsequent attempts to revive the brand have proven to be unsuccessful.

Eastern Air Lines: defunct 1991.

Miami-based Eastern Air Lines was one of the biggest names in the US airline business. Unfortunately, Eastern was plagued by labor strife and an inability to compete effectively post-deregulation. Eastern filed for bankruptcy in 1989 before ending flight operations in January 1991.

Midway Airlines: Defunct 1991.

Midway Airlines began flying in 1979 following the deregulation of the US airline industry. The Chicago-based airline was able to survive the surge in fuel prices and the drop in passenger traffic resulting from the Gulf War. The airline shut down in November 1991.

Interflug: defunct 1991.

Founded in 1958, Interflug succeeded Deutsche Lufthansa (different from West Germany's Lufthansa) as the national airline of East Germany. The airline failed to find a buyer after the reunification of Germany. Interflug shut down in February 1991.

Pan American World Airways: defunct 1991.

Founded in 1927, Pam Am is arguably the most iconic name in the airline industry.  Unfortunately, the airline ran into financial trouble during the 1970s and 80s before going out of business in 1991.

Tower Air: defunct 2000.

Founded in 1983, New York-based Tower Air operated scheduled passengers flights as well as military and leisure charters using its fleet of Boeing 747 jumbo jet. The airline ran into financial and operational troubles in the mid-1990s before shutting down in May 2000.

Ansett Australia: defunct 2001.

Founded in 1936, Ansett Australia was the second largest airline in Australia when it shut down in September 2001. The airline's owner, Air New Zealand had to be bailed out by the New Zealand government to avoid bankruptcy following Ansett's collapse.

Sabena: defunct 2001.

Founded in 1923, Sabena was Belgium's national airline until its collapse in November 2001.

Swissair: defunct 2002.

Founded in 1931, Swissair was at one time one of the most respected airlines in the world. Unfortunately, the Swissair's "Hunter Strategy" that saw it take equity stakes in a handful of other airlines during the 1980s and 90s stretched the company's finances too far. Swissair ceased operations in March 2002. Its assets were transferred to regional subsidiary Crossair which was then reorganized into the Swiss International Air Lines.

Aloha Airlines: defunct 2008.

Founded in 1946, the Honolulu, Hawaii-based airline ceased passenger flight operations in March 2008.

ATA Airlines: defunct 2008.

Founded in 1973, Indiana-based ATA Airlines filed for bankruptcy and ceased flight operations in April 2008. The airline cited the loss of its military charter business as a contributing factor to its demise.

Mexicana: defunct 2010.

Founded in 1921, Mexicana was Mexico's largest airline when it ran into financial trouble and shut down in August 2010.

Spanair: defunct 2012.

Founded in 1986, Spanair was for much of its existence a subsidiary of SAS Group, the owners of Scandinavian Airlines. In 2008, SAS Group sold off its controlling share in the Barcelona-based airline. The loss-making airline shut down in January 2012 after the local Catalan government failed to find new investors for Spanair.

Malev: defunct 2012.

Founded in 1946, Malev was Hungary's national airline until it ceased operations in February 2012 after the Hungarian government declined to continue funding the loss marking carrier.

Kingfisher: defunct 2012.

Kingfisher was founded in 2005 by flamboyant Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya as part of his UB Group business empire. The airline was known for its colorfully painted aircraft and top-notch service. Kingfisher ceased flights October 2012 after the Indian government pulled the heavily indebted airline's operating license.

Transaero: defunct 2015.

Founded in 1990, Transaero was one of Russia's largest privately-owned airlines. Unfortunately, Transaero collapsed in October 2015 due to $4 billion in debt. Fun fact, two Boeing 747-8 airliners that were due to be delivered to Transaero before its shut down will be converted into the next generation US presidential planes, aka. Air Force One.

Monarch Airlines: defunct 2017.

Founded in 1967, Monarch Airlines a major player in the British leisure charter business. The airline ceased operations in October 2017. According to the Economist, it was the largest airline to ever fail in the UK.

Air Berlin: defunct 2017.

Founded in 1978, Air Berlin was once Germany's second largest airline. The carrier ceased operations in October 2017 after major shareholder Etihad Airways declined to continue financial support of the money-losing airline.

UPDATE Romanian PM Dancila picks MEP Dan Nica for European Commissioner job / ForMin official Gabriela Ciot - second option

 Cache
Romanian PM Viorica Dancila has picked Dan Nica, a member of the European Parliament, as Romania's new nomination for a seat in the European Commission, following the rejection of the first candidate, Rovana Plumb, in the EP. She made the choice at a leadership meeting of the governing Social Democrats (PSD), despite her claiming initially that no decision in this regard would be taken at the meeting. Nica was picked by unanimous vote.
  • UPDATE PSD sources have said that PM Dancila called EC president elect von der Leyen to inform her about Dan Nica and that the top EU official reportedly demanded a backup option. PSD has picked such a backup in Gabriela Ciot, currently a secretary of state at the Foreign Ministry.
  • UPDATE 2 PM Dancila later confirmed that two nominees are to be tabled. In case Hungary opts for one candidate, Romania would also pick one - Dan Nica; in case Hungary presents two candidates, Romania would nominate both Nica and Gabriela Ciot, she said.
